"Peeta comes by every day to bring me cheese buns and begins to help me work on the family book. It's an old thing made of parchment and leather. Some herbalist on my mother's side of the family started it ages ago. The book's composed of page after page of ink drawings of plants with descriptions of their medical uses. My father added a section on edible plants that was my guidebook to keeping us alive after his death. For a long time, I've wanted to record my own knowledge in it. Things I learned from experience or from Gale, and then the information I picked up when I was training for the Games. I didn't because I'm no artist and it's so crucial that the pictures are drawn in exact detail. Thay's where Peeta comes in. Some of the plants he knows already, others we have dried samples of, and others I have to describe. He makes sketches on scrap paper until I'm satisfied, then I let him draw them in the book. After that, I carefully print all I know about the plant."

Trude on Chapter 3Sun 08 Feb 2015 09:30AM UTCwonderful update I feel already guilty for surely not leaving a 2k review for this chapter (which it would so deserve) I really enjoy Peeta's talks with Dr A. - more the ones now that Peeta is in 12 actually but even the ones while Peeta still was away from home, but those surely are more frustrating very nice of the Doc to remark on Peeta using sarcasm to belittle himself and how that must have started long before the Games of course it's also wonderful to see Katniss and Peeta slowly (re-)learning to interact with each other again and jealous Katniss is always a wonderful thing LOLComment Actions

ForestFairy on Chapter 3Sun 08 Feb 2015 12:21PM UTCFirst of all, I think it is a funny coincidence that I just reread the first two chapters of your fic yesterday, only one hour or so before you posted chapter 3.1! I call that fate, haha. And of course, I'm glad there is more to come for this chapter.Once more you will find this review consists entirely of embarrassing fangirling on APaBaaBwNTSihT (if I have to leave a critique it is that shortening the title doesn't really work here ;)) I'm going through this step by step and I hope I won't bore you!The Gale Conversation in District 12 at the start and the 'conclusion' at the endI'm glad and fascinated that we see so many flashforwards to their life in District 12, as you said before you don't want to focus much on this time, but it makes so much sense. And concerning the whole chapter, well, it is just s amazing how real your Peeta acts. He is slightly mean, still jealous, and to me comes over as inconsiderate. Katniss tries her best, but he immediately jumps to conclusions here. I don't blame Katniss for leaving. I think it fits nicely together with the end of the chapter, when Katniss asks Peeta about his experiences with other girls. That was a nice touch at the end, and I really like the Katniss you draw here as well. This sentence"I'm not like you, Peeta. You start to talk and something beautiful comes out. As soon as I try to explain what I'm thinking, it just makes everything worse."is so very Katniss. And I feel for her. She is not Peeta, and I'm glad that Dr. Aurelius and Peeta had a phone conversation, in which the Doctor reminded him that Katniss was confused about her feelings. That especially when it comes to emotions and feelings, nothing is black and white. That Katniss had so much on her plate that romance wasn't her priority. While Peeta is all about Katniss all the time, Katniss focus was simply a lot different. You work that out so beautifully in your story. That jealousy, again that fixation on Katniss is so very canon. It made me think of that scene in Catching Fire, immediately. They are in District 11 and people have been killed. Peeta is angry and hurt about Katniss and Haymitch keeping things from him. But hours later the thing that really gnawed at him is obviously that kiss with Gale, and if it had been the only one. This is very telling and I feel that you really brought this characteristic of Peeta out in this chapter.Therapy with Dr. A. in the Capitol focusing on Thirteen/Thirteen sceneThe Hijacking was horrible and I'm sure you're going to focus on the Capitol in the following chapters as well, but maybe what the Doctors did in District 13 might have made things worse for Peeta. Experimenting on him again. The loss of control, being ignored when he says "no"….wetting himself in fear. That must've been another very real nightmare for him. And also, we're not entirely sure if the Doctors in Thirteen wanted the best for Peeta. Coin certainly was involved somehow and maybe they didn't try too hard to get him back to himself. That woman still wanted Peeta to kill Katniss. Who knows how that affected the "experiments" on him. Great add-on with the goat, the very thing Haymitch told Katniss over the phone. The description of the therapy sessions once again, leaves me stunned. The exchanges with Dr. A. are brilliantly written and even the nurses seem real and in the case of Decima not only like named extras, but they are people in your story, with their own history.Comment Actions

NotAnIslander on Chapter 3Sun 08 Feb 2015 04:54PM UTCReading this, it's almost like Suzanne Collins herself commissioned you to write this, to give us this insight into Peeta's rehabilitation after the war. It's heartbreakingly beautiful to read, and you have captured these two beloved characters so well. Your insight into his treatment in 13 fits in perfectly, it wasn't neccessarily about Peeta as much as protecting the "Mockingjay". How horrible it must have been for Peeta, To feel like he was a piece in everyone's games. This fiction gives us a powerful reminder of how strong Peeta truly must have been to overcome everything, and still find the strength to be that hope for Katniss. Again, beautifully, heartbreakingly perfect. Each time I read it.Last Edited Sun 08 Feb 2015 07:05PM UTCComment Actions

Chaed on Chapter 3Tue 10 Feb 2015 09:37AM UTCAs always you've done superb work here. I really get to like Decima by the way. The episodic style also fits the story so well, letting us look into Peeta's head at different points of time. My favorite scene here was definitely the experiment in Thirteen, which wasn't all that different to what he must have endured in the Capitol. Wonderful narrative all throughout, really capturing that hopelessness and defenselessness. It was also nice to go to Twelve and catch up with Katniss after the trial. Things certainly haven't been easy for her, but I love how you stay true to her character with the unpredictable moods and such. I get the feeling that at times she's still in that arena-mode: sheltering her emotions, not wanting to disclose too much, that thinking of 'it's you OR me' and not 'you AND me'. And shamelessly dropping that all on Peeta. Wonderful. Here's some breadcrumbs for the geese so they won't disturb you while you come up with the next chapter!Comment Actions

MakLeon on Chapter 3Wed 18 Feb 2015 03:12AM UTCWhat strikes me in this new chapter is the way Peeta's love and hate towards Katniss blend together. It is especially visible in the shower episode and talking about Gale. It seems that the stronger Peeta's emotions are, the more confused he becomes whenever it is jealousy or desire. Their most peaceful and intimate moments together are when Katniss is sleeping in his arms, or when he gets chance to actually take care of her. It is as if taking care of Katniss helps him re-focus and actually heal. I am not sure whether that was your intention, or it is just my personal opinion, but it seems that the bond between them becomes stronger once Katniss allows herself to appear vulnerable. Probably, it happens because Peeta has always been somewhat dominated (by his mom and Katniss), and has a certain need for self-assertion. I also like Dr. Aurelius's explanation of the conflict, especially the part about Katniss having no answers to Peeta's questions. That, and Katniss and Peeta talking, shows that Katniss also undergoes some minor mental torture. Peeta makes her reflect on something she'd rather not, which of course makes her angry and annoyed, but at the same time, it helps her know her feelings better, and thus, "grow up". And one more thing, I like your descriptions of nature - not wordy, but they create a special atmosphere. Like primroses, heat and gust of wind in the morning right before Katniss and Peeta start quarreling about Gale.Comment Actions

sixela872 (sixela72) on Chapter 3Thu 05 Mar 2015 08:17PM UTCI thought I'd left comments. Great chapter! I won't be longwinded this time but I will say that the idea that the real/not real game would put Katniss on the defensive is spot on. I can see how she might interpret those questions as an judgement on her actions of the past. And his Peeta might sometimes, intentionally or not, use them to make her feel uncomfortable about how she treated him in the past - whether the treatment was intentional or not.One question - did Katniss not count the "I had to do that at least once" kiss? Wouldn't that make three? Or did she simply not want to get Peeta upset? Or did she exclude that one because she'd already counted it a long one ago when they were in D11?Comment Actions

damndonnergirls on Chapter 3Tue 01 Mar 2016 01:42AM UTCEverything about your writing absolutely screams Peeta. The descriptions are vivid and sumptuous; they can only come from someone with an artist's eye. (An artist who also happens to be a baker: I loved the comparison of Katniss's lips to cookie dough.) There are hints of Peeta's snark, as well—I snorted at the mention of "Cato's calm, gentle personality"—and of his lost innocence (practicing how to borrow Katniss's pencil in the bathroom mirror). And, of course, there's the way his hijacking has unleashed his jealousy and paranoia when it comes to Gale. There were times when I was confused whether something was a flashback, a fantasy, or a hijacked memory. Then I realized—that's the point. Genius.Comment Actions

juststella on Chapter 3Fri 06 Jan 2017 12:25AM UTCSo much emotion in this chapter. I found the 'back and forth' a bit hard to follow at times.Peeta has a flashback and hurts his hand in the process. Decima takes his art supplies away thinking that he tried to hurt himself. My heart reached out for Peeta as this point.Peeta is trying to make sense of everything around him. His sessions with Dr Aurelius are getting somewhere I believe. Yet he struggles to understand Katniss and her 'relationship' with Gale. "Peeta, have you considered the possibility that Katniss may not have the answers you seek?" He still has a lot of healing to do. I'm glad that Peeta openly tells Katniss (after her insistence) about the other girls he kissed in the slag heap years ago. I found that strangely endearing.Katniss has her own struggles. "When Snow took you, I thought I would die. I wanted to die." "And then you came back and you hated me." She clutches the cup tighter, voice so small I can barely hear. "And that was even worse." She still struggles with her emotions and feelings.Heartbreaking stuff!
