been reading the year of intelligent tigers and yes it is just as good as i expected. but more importantly i fucking love how kate orman writes like, intimacy. between this and vampire science and the little chunk of the left handed hummingbird ive read like…. yeah this is action adventure shit and everythings an emergency but theres lots of downtime for people to slow down feel the full weight of whats happening to them (being taken hostage, hiding out and making plans, etc) and when that happens you get these scenes where everyone is like, huddled together in some little room, or theyre holding each other while theyre still alive to do so. the people the doctor n co. get put in these situations with warm up to them so quickly, as you would do when you might all be killed at any moment.
i think frequently of the scene in vampire science where the doctor and harris sneak off together to have a talk about their deal and they slide from being friendly and amicable to it sounding like theyre not going to be able to come away from this situation without a lot of people dying, and the whole time theyre just dicking around in some empty hair salon theyve just broken into while harris washes the doctors hair. like the “oh noooo were inseparably linked now so were FORCED to come to an agreement” is a trope that you see around every now and then, but i feel like you dont often see it getting taken to this extreme of like, accepting the situation and embracing the intimacy, taking it from mental to physical in a way that is That close while also being not (overtly) sexual/romantic, going from light to serious to light again in the way that you only really can with somebody youre on a level with. DO YOU GET ME. do you get me. i felt crazy reading that scene.
i knew going in to intelligent tigers that the doctor and Karl were written to be, like, pretty obviously in a relationship and the scenes with the two of them at the beginning still like…. shocked me with just how romantic they were. like the bit with the two of them walking out into the hills at night and getting drunk laying on the grass together. that shit was so beautiful to me that shit was REAL vast swathes of romance literature do not have anything with an ounce as much soul as the first 50 pages of this fucking doctor who book. thank you kate orman i love you kate orman.
