it doesn't always bother me, but sometimes i really wish that fic writers (or romance writers in general) would stop undermining previous relationships the characters have had.

you don't have to undermine those relationships and the love felt for those previous partners to show how much the character loves this new partner.

there's something incredibly beautiful about how previous love have shaped someone and also about how each relationship feels different, not necessarily less, but different in how they feel to the character.

and for fics sometimes it feels so ooc for that person to think that, to downplay the love in previous relationships. even if that love fizzled out at some point or changed to more platonic love.

it doesn't always have to be better, more, deeper. sometimes it's just different in a way that's perfect for that time in their life.
