journal/braindump 26/3/24

i hope life gets better soon. school is so miserable and weird and i just constantly feel like my physical shape is blurred and i'm but a a faceless entity drifting through the crowded and sweaty halls. when i speak to people it feels like i have to physically force myself to and i'm always so conscious of the fact that i would really love it if i were alone and not speaking to anybody at all.

i don't feel confident in myself and i feel like this year has passed by way too fast and i feel like just attempting to live feels like a bunch of cold sand is piled in my hands, and like sand does, it slips easily through my fingers and all i can do is watch. i feel so stupid and so naive all the damn time

for a while i had believed that everything would be okay, and then for a while after that i believed that i should kill myself. i'm okay now, i still feel very unsettled and it's like i'm not really me but i feel fine enough to function and i feel fine enough to live and wish to keep on living

i wish to keep on living

tomorrow i will wake up early and i will make myself coffee and i will sit down and read (i've had reading block for 2 days- which seems short but its annoying for me bc i really really want to read but i feel too restless and distracted to). i'll try to be nice to myself and protect my peace really hard and go on walks or something

i find that watching youtube videos where people just sit and talk, or rearrange their house and books, is really calming to me. i can't wait to just sit in front of the tv with a cup of matcha and a box of chocolates and just watching people talk, or watch all the movies ive been meaning to watch for sooo long

autumn is rolling around, and i'm infinitely greatful that it is because i always feel so inspired during this season. autumn makes me want to read, it makes me want to watch more films and eat more food and drink warm drinks that make me feel okay inside.

i also hope to pick up journalling again, but i'm not sure if i will because i don't have my own printer for images and idk what to journal but i have recently tried to just draw pictures- ive recently written journal pages on what i want to read, and also an "about me" page, and hand drew pictures. it's nice, but it doesn't give the same effect as full out journalling (with stickers, images, tape, etc... sigh.). i hope i journal more this holiday nonetheless.

i also hope to read without feeling so much pressure. i usually have no problem with reading whatever i want to read, as i like to think of myself as somebody who isnt easily influenced by other people's views (eg. if someone told me i have to read a certain book, i will consider it but i wont read it unless i want to) , but lately i've been thinking of all the books i want to read this holiday (for me i have autumn break in one week- and autumn break lasts for 2 weeks) and as u can imagine, it is very stressful bc ive somehow fallen into the mindset that i must read ALL of those books before next term or else.

fyi the books comprise of

- the complete collection of jane austen

- the complete collection of sherlock holmes

- the poppy war

- the iliad

- hamlet

- the metamorphosis

soo yeah... especially the first two points are stressing me out haha... im starting the poppy war now but im a little nervous bc ppl keep saying that its VERY gory??? and i usually dont care abt such things but lately my nerves and emotions have been such a wreck that i dont trust myself to read it in a calm manner

i'll try to break free of this toxic reader mindset tho! it would be nice if i could talk to people abt books, so it feels like im engaging with my hobby while not actually having to do the hobby, but nobody ik irl will want to talk abt books as i do

MAN i so badly want to rant abt booktok (ok actually i wont expand on this bc its a very sore point for me in the sense that i might get worked up over it and then feel shit afterwards for displaying sm emotion)

ummm i get my maths result back on thursday and im so fucking scared bc i know i messed up bad for a few questions but im not sure if it was enough to drop me down to a b... idk i REALLY REALLY WANT AN A. like istg my whole self esteem for until the next exams roll around is goijg to be based off my maths result.. fuck im so emotionally immature its laughable

ummm also i have literature class tmr and i love lit class but we have to watch fucking "shes the man" and im sorry but i hate that movie so so much (ive never watched it before but we watched half of it last lesson and it was soo annoying). ughh why is my eng teacher making us watch this 😭😭

also my eng teacher is very blunt and therefore very interesting to talk to so ive been wanting to ask him abt books hes read lately but i CANT bc we have to watch thats tupid fucking movie and also he has to mark papers :( but also like hes the only intellectually stimulating person ik irl so what am i meant to do with all of my buzzing book thoughts ughh (rhetorical question. pls dont answer) :(

oh yeah last night i had a dream tjat i got a B+ for english and that was... it was like a nightmare im not even kidding. it was such a vivid dream too- everybody else got an A meanwhile i got a B+ (very close to an A) and i was just absolutely shocked and i desperately begged my teacher to give me some extra credit work so i can bump it up to an A-... yeah...

oh but also back to me wanting to have a better life- i think i'll take myself to the thrift more and go out with my friend (yes, singular. theres only one friend that i like hanging out with outside of school 💀) atleast once this holiday... thats what teen girls my age do, right??? haha...

also i want to watch ladybird and the perks of being a wallflower and rewatch little women and dead poets society !

i also might reread solitaire but aghh that makes me stressed out abt reading again... fuck. maybe i should just take a break from reading omfg

i cant wait to wake up early tomorrow and drink coffee though! :)

also i will make more spotify playlists (it makes me rlly happy to) and MAYBE even try cooking????????????? man idfk im desperate okay? feeling suicidal is not fun and i dont want to feel like that again this year. i cant afford thay bc im meant to be an academic weapon :( (lol who am i kidding? im more like an academic victim)

also maybe i will just text my friends more in general. it stresses me out and makes me feel icky but the other day, i had a nice and fun and lighthearted texting convo with one of my class friends and it made me realise that i should probably text people more ...

anyways i think thats all? i think ive gotten everything off my chest for now. i liked doing this actually. maybe i'll do it more often idk 💀💀

ok im glad u said u dont think kids should get a job till they're 26 bc no1 else thinks so n i feel so behind bc im 22 never had a job still in community college bc i dropped outta school at 16 but im rly starting 2 see life has barely even begun for me. i think i have time

i got my first job (entry level) last year at 21 n it's SO boring and to be real anyone can do it at any time it's not that hard n im still in uni. the only thing i will say about getting a job is that i got a job as a hostess which made me way more confident in charisma and with the way i look like i used to think i was like an ogre and in some ways i still do cus of dysmorphia <3)

I know ppl at my work who have been working since they were 13 and they are something else (in like a strange way if u wanna talk abt it more u can message me <3) but yeah. take ur time explore new interests READ stay up till 3am surfing forums that expired 7 years ago on topics that dont exist today and sleep a good 9 hours you are not missing anything by not working when u dont have to

I'm still working on request so please bare with me, the fact that I have been getting alot of requests while working on other stories is wild I'm getting there pls I just need to focus before people send to much

Anyway to save my mental health from shattering from request and burning myself out I want to do something

Things abt me that literally Noone asked for:

1. I am short for my height like really really REALLY short(guess me height and you will get something from me idk I refuse to pay tho)

2. Eating gluten makes my stomach hurt I don't have celiac disease or wheat allergy, just gluten sensitive which is sad bc I love intalian food

okay here we go

edd:

- 5'9

- half korean half white

- 26 in the end

- bi and the token cis friend, uses he/him pronouns

- built like a muscular santa LOL, definitely physically the strongest of the main four

- has lots of moles all over

- likes to have a clean shaven face but gets lazy sometimes. he has hairy arms, legs, etc

- OBVIOUSLY listens to the beatles his cat is named ringo. also is a pink floyd, journey, rolling stones, and led zepplin enjoyer. he likes bo burnham too

- i see his personality as being like. he doesn't start chaos but boy is he happy to join in and be along for the ride.

- actually is pretty apathetic a lot of the time *points at pre legacy edd who wants nothing to do with his friends when he has to put effort into the relationship*

- gets so competitive over every. little. thing.

- has adhd , was hyperactive as a kid but now struggles to muster the energy to do anything that doesn't relate to a hyperfixation (animation and writing comics are the major ones)

- tics as a result of his adhd which pisses him off especially when he's drawing

- also stims quite a lot ☺ canonically gets flappy hands + his "broccoli!" is ABSOLUTELY a stim r u kidding

- still has leftover powers from poweredd! they aren't always there but if he feels threatened they can pop up. his eyes turn completely green when he uses powers 😮

- really quick on his feet and is always able to pull the boys out of trouble if need be (big reason why he naturally falls into a leadership position)

- only eats junk food unless someone sits him down and forces him to eat a proper meal. eats really frequently too, always has a bag of chips and cola within arms reach

- drinks and smokes 🍃 socially but never by himself. isn't a fan of anything with nicotine

- likes beer and whiskey, and takes 🍃 in pretty much any form without a preference

- his green hoodie is a comfort item so he is p much always wearing it, even in the summer. otherwise wears t shirts and cargo pants

- his lucky can is also a comfort item

- vibes really well with tom! they're both really chill and mellow when around eachother. they like to talk about movies together

- when with matt his energy level is definitely boosted. they like to go out to eat, go to the mall, and ofc go to amusement parks

- tord activates the competitive part of his personality lol. they butt heads a lot but most of the time it's in a joking way. loooove to play video games together

tom:

- 6'1

- black

- 25 in the end

- bi with a male preference, doesn't label his gender but is somewhere inbetween agender and male. uses he/it/they pronouns

- messes with his hair a lot, most of the time it is bleached more than it should be. it sometimes has shoulder length locs which he'll tie into a ponytail

- has many scars up his arms and thighs

- has tons of piercings everywhere bc he uses it as a form of sh and figures nobody will notice (tord totally does n worries but never says anything)

- muscular arms and chest bc he works out when he's mad (which is. frequently!)

- has stubble and very thick + usually untrimmed sideburns. also lots of body hair

- nails are usually painted black

- enjoys ska punk fashion

- has lots of patchwork and embroidery on his clothing. wears tons of accessories , chains, rubber bracelets, belts, fingerless gloves, yada yada

- ok im abt to rapidfire list artists i think it listens to bc. he loves music so <3

sublime, queen, david bowie, radiohead, ac/dc, abba, nirvana, oasis, deftones, korn, the smashing pumpkins, neutral milk hotel, the smiths, pavement, violent femmes, and pixies

- a lot of ppl write him as like. always serious and deadpan, never experiences joy. THIS IS INCORRECT!!!!! this is literally the guy whose running bit is "random xd"

- tom is the first to make a joke out of a shitty situation, in fact his inability to read the room causes problems sometimes. he def made jokes about tord after the end and it made edd and matt massively uncomfortable

- also sometimes makes those awkward self deprecating jokes that are not funny but. he's working on it

- relies on situational humor to be funny

- generally is quiet unless he wants to make a lil snide remark or someone speaks directly to him

- ......unless he's drunk. GOD does he love to talk when he's drunk. usually about himself, although it could either be "i'm worthless" or "i'm awesome and sexy"

- SO BAD WHEN PPL HAVE EMOTIONS... lacks empathy so if someone cries in front of him he has no clue how to react

- very possessive + protective of susan and tomee bear

- *unfolds list and puts on reading glasses* has depression, mild social anxiety (was bad in hs but is getting better), adhd, ocd, bipolar, + insomnia and obviously issues with alcohol. sorry for making him mentally ill it is simply how i see him

- his alc addiction is actually a lot better than it was pre legacy :] especially post the end he is able to occasionally drink socially without it being an issue

- of course i will talk abt monster tom omg. so their monster traits (super strength, increased height, claws, horns, tail) will appear when he feels any super intense emotion no matter what it is. it's typically painful but not always , n its very rare that it assumes full monster form without injections from tord/the red army

- his pessimistic nature comes in handy bc edd and matt don't think abt the risks or possibility of failure for a lot of things so tom is able to reel 'em back and help ground everybody

- forgets to eat all. the. time. and when he DOES eat, it's at like 3am when he grabs a plain bagel from the kitchen

- prefers vodka when drinking but will take anything. not a huge fan of hard seltzers or beer though bc they don't get him drunk enough. i think they prolly like taking edibles to calm their nerves and likes to smoke weed with tord

- probably has a juul that he gets too embarrassed to use outside of his room . not as into nicotine as tord but certainly enjoys it

- makes money as a film composer .. he loves what he does but also wishes he could be a director

- used to work part time at the local bar but uhmmmm

- tom and matt just enjoy being in eachothers company tbh. if they're sittin in the same room on their phones both of them will consider it a good time! tom also likes to play matt music

- i could write a whole essay on tom and tord's relationship but i have so many thoughts i can't even figure out my train of thought. my god

- they bond a lot over hating things LOL they'll watch stupid movies just to laugh at. tom will go on a rant about how he wishes he had the budget to make a blockbuster film and tord just listens

- tom is secretly interested in tord's inventions but would never ask about them so as not to boost his ego LOL

matt:

- 6'4

- white

- 26 in the end

- unlabeled sexuality, almost exclusively likes men. genderfluid and uses he/they + comes up with new neos for himself biweekly

- an absolute twig with very little muscle. he does have very broad shoulders however which gives the illusion he might be anything other than a string bean

- his hair is in awful condition because he treats it horribly 😵 it's naturally curly but since middle school he has straightened and put gel in it daily

- nails always look very nice, sometimes gets extravagant and colorful manicures but usually just has french tips. their nails are quite long

- has long canines and a bite mark scar on his neck

- covered head to toe in freckles

- little to no body hair, they barely have to shave bc they simply don't grow much

- big fan of maximalism in fashion and interior decor

- has his ears pierced and a little stud on his nose

- really enjoys music, listens to madonna, kesha, the millionaires, marina, britney spears, doja cat, avril lavigne, and of course

gwen stefani

- yes he is stupid but not. THAT. stupid. this dude was the leader of a zombie army .

- he's very smart when it comes to manipulating people and likes to use his charm and good looks to get what he wants

- HOWEVER . they lack some common sense. he definitely would use his phone flashlight to check a clock in the middle of the night LOL

- struggles to understand sarcasm a lot of the time

- constantly seeking validation from the boys and ESPECIALLY tom. tom isn't the most affectionate so when tom compliments him his brain explodes /pos

- he was that kid in elementary school with nut allergies n all the adults catered to him LMFAOOOO

- has cute petnames for the boys (dimples for edd, teddy bear for tom, captain for tord) also uses handsome as a name for all of them rather than an adjective lol. he calls tord sunshine when he wants to peeve him

- goes ALL OUT for holidays!!! decorating and gift giving sparks joy

- took french in high school and actually enjoyed it a lot, he's almost fluent

- likes going to parties bc he's constantly understimulated so bright lights and loud music = A GOOD TIME

- always has incense or a candle burning

- has sensory issues with a lot of food (canon example would be him not able to eat ice cream bc it hurts his teeth)

- autistic , ocd and bpd haver . i specifically think he has ocd because of his compulsive hoarding

- actually has a decent eating schedule 😱😱 he eats a lot of fruit . don't ask why i know this i simply can just see it

- enjoys drinking quite a lot actually, they're a big fan of fancy cocktails. enjoys edibles but HATES smoking and vaping, coughs a lot when he does. probably vomited his first time smoking and was traumatized ever since lol

- works at a novelty toy shop in an outlet mall ��😁 really genuinely loves his job and is so sweet to customers .

- he is still a vampire! thankfully since modern mirrors are not backed by silver he can see his beautiful face🙏

- can't eat garlic and can't be out in the sun for very long without a parasol

- is good at comforting the boys when they're upset, not great at giving advice but they're a great listener and shoulder to cry on

- likes to watch anime with tord 👍 although they have very different taste in anime for the most part, both of them enjoy shounen

- i know. logically. in canon he definitely likes women (see: kim and katya) but it is simply my opinion that he's only attracted to anime girls and when interacting with irl women he's uncomfortable

- that being said he's gay and transmasc, uses he/him. he was so quiet before leaving and then when he comes back he's suddenly super boisterous and can't shut up? there's no way he didn't start T and get top surgery in the time he was gone

- muscular from being in the army but when he takes time off to work on inventions he'll eat exclusively instant noodles and takeout so he has some pudge on his tummy, hips and thighs

- scars all over which he claims are from combat training but are just from him being careless with his weapons

- massive eye bags bc his sleeping schedule is horrid

- started bleaching and dying his hair a much lighter brown about a year before leaving , when he gets depressed or too consumed in his work his roots can grow out a decent bit though

- had lots of acne as a teen but is finally free in his 20s

- bites his nails so they look VERY ugly lmao

- sharp teeth >:)

- can get pretty tan in the summer and has freckles on his face, arms, and shoulders

- can't grow facial hair 😒😒 has hair pretty much everywhere else though

- he likes hentai in canon so i'm going to pretend that automatically means he is an anime enjoyer! his alltime fav is code geass because r u kidding. a mecha anime abt a guy taking over the world using intellect rather than brute force .

- he also enjoys fooly cooly, death note, mobile suit gundam, promare, fma:b, evangelion, and gurren lagann

- his fav anime characters are lelouch and asuka <3

- his personality pre legacy is . MASSIVELY different . he was kind of jst like "i'll keep my head down unless A. edd or tom tries to start shit or B. i get to talk about the military or weapons" LOL

- he always knew he was destined for something greater though and had been working on blueprints and finding materials for his giant robot since hs

- started building it a few years before he left . i like to think he didn't take it with him because he knew if he did he wouldn't have a reason to ever see edd, matt, or tom again

- already had connections to paul and pat , they kept in contact after school bc it was always the plan that they would take over the world together

- i think tord stayed in the army seen in moving targets, rose through the ranks, and slowly but surely included more and more of his own ideals into the teachings n trainings of new recruits until eventually they broke off and became the red army

- even before joining the army he didn't have a job because he can't keep a regular job for life of him. instead he does the majority of the cleaning around the house

i just finished the rise of flynn rider and i have a lot to say so spoilers under the cut 😌

i just said this on discord but as long as i dont think about it for more than 3 seconds it was really good!

lance and eugene 😭 i love them so much the author wrote their dynamic so so SO well and theyre so cute i love them

i think the plot overall was really good and i liked the thought behind it :') also EUGENE SAYING THAT LANCE IS HIS HOME 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 YES IM CRYING

also all the flynn rider quotes were SO good i loved them all so much and omg you could really tell that eugene based his entire personality on those books lollll i love it

okay now im gonna be really bitter but its not because i didnt like it! its just because the inconsistencies are what stick in my mind the most 😔

first of all i was sad to find out that anthony the weasel was actually his name, ive always thought that everyone else just called him anthony but eugene called him the weasel to be an asshole

ALSO i love having the characters that already exist in the book but like,,, having the snuggly duckling guys working with the baron kinda makes no sense? like they were all thugs but like they should have just always been at the snuggly duckling bc the baron still has his empire during the series but the snuggly duckling guys are clearly Not A Part Of It which kinda confuses me bc like? how and why did they all get out and go to the snuggly duckling :(

also everything with the baron is kinda.... huh. like clearly it is no longer a circus and is actually just like a crime family by the time the series happens so like,.,.,.,,,.,.,...,. why would he make that switch? also he was acting super out of character the whole time and i know that was partially the point but also when he was smiling and hugging ppl i was like "ok damn baron who are you"

ALSO VARDEROS WHAT THE FUCKDKAJFHDASJ first of all the orphanage should've been in varderos second of all they should have at least BEEN to varderos third of all quaid was canonically the first person to arrest them so like Excuse Me Sir What

also stalyan hhhhhhh what how why when. the baron clearly hates eugene and by association stalyan would probably hate him too so when and why would they get ENGAGED ugh

My first was the roses at 18, then this Jenny Holzer piece (turn soft and lovely any time you have a chance) (the dude gave it to me for free??), then these 2 twigs on my wrists that my best friend poked on me, then I got my coffee beans and my 1-800-I-feel-ok tattoo at the same time (ask me more abt that one! It’s a fun story I think) pic here, then my friend poked this bee on me and I shaded it, next I gave myself a tattoo that says DEFY, oh and I gave myself a tiny match tattoo somewhere along the line, gave myself this blade of grass (after my first chapbook ‘if the grass can hold its ground, so can i’), and this other plant on my other leg, then I added grow to my other hip bc otherwise I would have 13 tattoos and that’s ew, then this striped bass! first time using color and I think it’s some of my best work, then this tattoo that says ‘this is real’ oh also you can see the ‘F’ on the tip of my finger I did that one when I did defy for my late friend, then this lovely lady from Mars Hobrecker!!!! one of my most favorite tattoo artists he’s in Brooklyn! Then I did this lavender on my hand, I did this rosemary around my knee (you can see the match in the second photo!), I started this baby’s breath on my hip for a photo project then never finished it lol, then go my they chest tattoo!, I gave myself a cat tooth with my non dominant hand and my friend free handed this squiggle on me that they didn’t finish both pictured here, then I got hydrangeas for my mom, and I think lastly? I gave myself this hand last week! oh geez and I have one my ex gave me but that was traumatic so I’m not showing you but it’s on the back of my arm and p sizable if you ever see me in person you’ll see it ig

1. Who makes the first move and how? i honestly think it was pretty even steven here ? they both bickered a lot at their photo shoot , working together . i feel like cassie was SO frustrated with him and his easy charm / cockiness that she probably kissed him first just to shut him up

its 11:59 its still technically tonight so

this is gonna be my reference point to questions abt venezuela, at least regarding things pre- May 19 2019. Its a bit scattered and it may get edited down along the road, but yeah.

one difference in scales that’s important to keep in mind: the lifespan of people is 2-7 decades. the lifespan of colonialism lasts centuries. the lifespan of media memory is a couple years, tops.

Most western narratives of venezuela start meaningfully at chavez, which is a mistake. The focus point in history around which the country flowed was the Caracazo. You probably already know about this, but a massive uprising took place in the heart of Caracas, against decades of dictatorship both formal and informal, after severe instability in the global oil market. The people were hungry, the riots were fiery, and the bullets bled. knows the death toll even now, but its estimated well into the thousands. This happened pre-chavez, and started a cascade of events which brought him into limelight that you can read about here. not gonna go into more venezuelan history, but i talk a bit more here

chavez was democratically elected, multiple times.

in 2002, after his first democratic election, he was kidnapped by US-backed troops and replaced by someone who threw out the 1999 constitution, which was as legitimate as any other made in venezuela’s colonial and violently capitalist history, seeing as it was the first (aka only, so far) of 26 constitutions actually approved by popular referendum. He was reinstated largely due to massive protests in support of him. Maduro however doesn’t really have as much of the charisma and support of chavez, which is creating problems - as well as exacerbating problems created by the economic crises ramping up just around chavez’s death. In 2015, there were elections to the National Assembly, which ended up with the Opposition winning a majority of the seats (which does show that there’s some degree of fairness in the elections, at least verifiably up til that point, yet that isnt rly accounted for when western media describes it as “undemocratic” - many of whom don’t apply the same scrutiny to their own country: such as this UN Human Rights councilor who also happens to be the crown prince of british-iraq, currently residing in the noted democracy of the Kingdom of Jordan, which has no vested interest or control over any particular export of Venezuela.).

This turnout showed most of all that maduro had alienated as many as 2 million of his supporters, who didnt end up voting (though many also voted against him - trying to act on their feeling that whatever they want, its “not this”). This decreasing support also accelerates whats known as “Everyday Sabotage” - people not trusting in the government, and look out for their own interests contra everyone else. This is a danger inherent to tying “Socialism” to a primarily state project.

However 1999 Constitution was never meant as an eternal document & it created mechanisms to call for new popular constitutional referendums to be held. That’s what the “Constituent Assembly” is about, which is what a lot of the western world is describing as him singlehandedly rewriting it (while also being “vague about its contents”), or “created by him”. Elections to the constituent assembly were boycotted by opposition, so that it would be government controlled & look like a sham in the eyes of the broader world. That being said, the assembly was called both as a reaction to losing election but also in response to intensifying crises - it was put forth (i don’t see any reason to believe in bad faith) as a way to come together and figure out how to address the needs that were driving people to protest - to address the desire for “not this”, but bc of the uncertainty, it was easily twistable by reactionaries by putting all emphasis on the former. Also timing corresponds with increasing fears of maduro straying from the path of chavez, the image of scrapping one of his strongest plays for smth unknown is risky - tho if there are other meaningful options given the situation im not sure. And the body’s got at least as much constitutional legitimacy as Guaido (Chapter III)

The 1999 constitution also enabled a recall election to be called against maduro in 2016, bc it was written with particular attention to holding public officials accountable - similar noble commitments helped to end the presidency of Rousseff & bring in Bolsonaro (who was also one of the people spurring on the investigations and whipping up a social base).

governing is about the expression of power. I wanna live in a world where that power isn’t expressed, but as long as the exploitation of the global working class continues unabated, id prefer some of that power be put towards helping the poor.

there is no such thing as a static state of affairs, there’s no “goldilocks zone” out in the political universe where we tweak things finely until we find whats best for everyone, only different rates of change in different dimensions. what we need to do is figure out how we can push that state of affairs in a direction so that everyday people have the power to take control of their lives. re

re: “constitutionality” - if the supreme court calls it constitutional then its constitutional. period. There’s no such thing as a supreme court as an “independent branch” of government, but there are different degrees of integration into the rest of it.

The Supreme Tribunal of Venezuela has 32 members, (a bit more than a dozen put in by the national assembly, while the PSUV held it), and the opposition holds abt 3 away from a supermajority. Each member of the court holds their spot for 12 years. If that’s “The Most Corrupt In The World” according to Transparency International, i wonder what world the 9-person lifetime-appointed US Supreme Court (2 of which appointed by trump, and save for pulling a Weekend At Ginsbergs, likely 3) is on. In fact, one of the tactics that the more radical circles of democrat voters are putting forward is to pack the Supreme Court. Because thats how shit actually gets done, or at the least how shit is prevented from being committed w the stamp of legality. FDR learned that lesson too, in trying to pass what is today known as “The New Deal”

My comparisons to trump are for specific end: these actions are exerted on levers of liberal democracy, and every single liberal democracy is susceptible to them in some ways.

whats a “dictator”? if hes unelected, the millions of people who participated in the elections dont seem to think so. if maduro is a dictator, then what is donald trump? the majority of ppl didnt vote for him yet hes still governing. macron’s popularity has at several points been less than 1/3, and the yellow vest protestors have been violently attacked - why is he not “a violent dictator with only the support of the military”? These terms are not neutral.

“their elections are highly flawed” So What? show me a country whose elections arent.

“opposition jailed” - ok but coup plotters don’t get off easy in any liberal democracy. If someone - say Bernie Sanders - said “enough is enough” and succeeded in overthrowing the current government with the help of a foreign government…. you think they’d let him go free? what if ten years later he was getting his supporters all riled up to do it again? how long you think he’d be in jail for (assuming he can survive well into his 100’s)? You think more than 13 years? Think he’d get house arrest? Some US states lock you up for posessing weed up to 10. If you stay long enough around this blog, youll find plenty of other examples of much more cruel and unusual punishments. Look at Chelsea Manning, look at Oscar Riviera… look at the US protestors saying Guaido is illegitimate

what we have to keep in mind most of all, is to show that the contradictions being exploited are inherent to Liberalism. Contradictions are just expressed most freely at the margins - the interstices

poor economic decisions happen everywhere - 2008/2009 still affecting the entire world there’s violence thats “natural”, and violence thats “intolerable”. The dividing line is whether we have anything to gain by changing things.

sanctions: started under obama, originally targeted specific individuals, used as precedent for more generalized. They’re indirect - they have a “squeezing effect”, takes already-existing problems & just makes them markedly worse. also doesn’t necessarily correlate with emigration, bc it takes a lot of money to start a new life somewhere else, and sanctions disproportionately affect the poor.

war wouldnt likely look like (many) US boots on the ground - we’ve got plenty of other places to be. It’d look like guns being smuggled to counter-protestors. It’d look like sending resources to neighboring countries like Colombia or Brazil who would then use their troops. Colombias ruling party is right wing populists - much of current president’s campaign was run on fearmongering abt venezuelan socialism - they’re raring to go. It’d look like drones https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caracas_drone_attack. Also means there likely won’t be a sudden trigger, its a gradually escalating stressful gradually-more-warlike situation.

If war does break out - where would the refugees go? In reality the majority would go to Colombia, but if anything significant breaks out there will be a stream of those looking to find shelter in the US, which has advertised itself as a beacon of hope - what would happen to them? some may get taken in as a gesture of showmanship, but nowhere close to the majority.

speaking of the US - imagine if trump and bolton manage to actually plot a winning coup. Do you think that that wont be his main bullwark against ppl like Bernie? you think the media and rest of the democratic party wont jump on that narrative and “begrudgingly” support a fascist because the alternative might mean supporting single payer and not-having-good-for-ratings-climate-apocalypse?

another term thrown around without regard is “once vibrant” - for whom?

most articles ive seen just take this as an axiom, and dont find any cognitive dissonance when also saying chavez reduced poverty hugely.

The answer to that rhetorical question: Citgo is venezuelan, before chavez none of the wealth went back to venezuela - thats what “vibrancy” means.

a couple ppl have raised concerns abt my strong stance on equivocal dismissal - if there’s a difference, if there’s some way of reading your statement that says “X country that the State Dept wants to invade is an anomoly in the otherwise free world”, then that’s acting to push the discourse towards normalization & invasion. It’s not “whataboutism”, just basic consistency.

now more than ever, narratives are affected by people. They may not be ones we had a hand in forging, but the way that we propagate them actually does have measurable effects on the larger-scale political outcomes. Always look for the base assumptions, as well as the direction

sure denounce Chavez. sure denounce Maduro. denounce Kim, Xi, Castro, anyone. But if there’s no equally or proportionally loud denunciations of the horrors perpetrated by allies - the “assumed”, “natural” violence, then you’re acting to reinforce the narrative of exceptionalism.

Just make sure after you take a breath, you denounce Saudi Arabia & Yemen, Israel for Palestine, the conditions which brought Argentinian/Brazillian, Brazilian coup, the US for Puerto Rico, the conditions which have murdered dozens of journalists in Mexico per year…

what people want most of all is stability. “A debate over whether it is mismanagement and corruption by the Maduro government or the sanctions that are the author of the crisis is largely irrelevant. The point is that a combination of the reliance on oil revenues and the sanctions policy has crushed the policy space for any stability in the country.”

also shows the weakness of only having a small number of charasmatic faces representing the movement - if one dies and theres no clear and popular replacement, then you’ll lose ppl who were largely brought in by the charisma, weakening your political project, and creating cracks for reactionary forces to take advantage of - especially in times of transition.

bourgeoisie still control a majority of the economy. Capitalist businesses are internally unaccountable, and in this age of intensified global trade, one can punish countries for straying from the pack by moving business & focus away. If you’re looking for dictatorships, look at the thousands of private companies run as dictatorships daily

capital flight is a real effect, precisely because socialism is fundamentally and irreconcilably against the self-interest of the bourgeoisie. not necessarily against the interest of the humans-who-are-also-bourgeois, but of the impersonal self-sustaining force of capital.

Have you ever pulled something out of an electrical socket, and seen a quick spark? The reason that occurs is bc of what’s called an induction current, which is a fancy physics word for flowing electricity not liking to suddenly change its flow. If you accidentally touch that spark, you might feel it, but youll live to tell the tale. But if you only take the plug out halfway & touch it, that’s a different story. Capital flows similarly.

my country (lithuania) has been facing sky-high emigration since the collapse of the USSR (with an added boost after 08-09), we have also consistently had one of the highest suicide rates in the world (#7), a minimum wage of about 3 Euros an hour (after a recent increase), as well as one of the highest prison populations in Europe (discounting Russia & Belarus… which like….)

when are we gonna be invaded? when will the US media talk about our pain?

oh wait, they did. We cried all pretty for the TV cameras, then they got a bozo nobody really knew of to denounce the government, who they called dictatorial (though it was far from ideal, massive bureaucracies dont tend to mix well with single-person-decision-making). And to be fair, the fact that the government was unpopular wasnt entirely undeserved. But what was promised to us was the idea of “Freedom”, “Free Enterprise”; to “Get Rid of Corruption” and institute “Real” Democracy". They said we’d be integrated into the glorious capitalist west, and we understood that to mean that we’d be in the position of a Germany, or at least an Austria or smth. But they never meant to integrate us into the imperial Core, we have always been seen as part of the Periphery - the “assumed” violence that “naturally” happens.

Then we got to where we our today. Some of the stuffs more available, but expensive. Most of the bureaucracy’s still around, it just helps fewer people. We stand as an example of what to expect, in one of the best case scenarios, you would join our emigrees now making up a significant percentage of underpaid house-servants aka maids across the EU.

if we want the people of Venezuela to be healthy, safe, and fulfilled, then:

speak out and pointing to the effects of US sanctions is incredibly important. They’ve already killed 40,000 people in the last year, and 300,000 more are in extreme danger (and millions more in long-term risk).

what does it mean when you simultaneously sanction trade with a place but also demand they let you give them humanitarian aid?

if there is to be action taken by the international community, then the US has forfeited its right to speak. They threw it away once in 2002, and obama rhetorically picked it up and dusted it off so that trump could throw it in a bigger dumpster, thats also on fire. However we also still live in a world deeply shaped by US Hegemony, so the opinions of its close trade partners & closest-knit media buds should be seen as influenced as such. Doesn’t mean that theyre wrong on everything too, but they still feel the magnetic pull of the US economy and ecosystem (as well as their own potentially imperial interests) and the effect of that force cannot be discounted.

transitioning our economies away from oil & away from globalized neoliberalism which only values peripheral states by their exports - dissolves tensions of how to produce in unproductive terrain

socialize medicine in the US, so that drug companies run by dictatorships can’t control their lives & ours. healthcare is especially reliant on imports, sanctions affect especially strongly.

normalize the ideas of Socialism, without taking the easy way out of “oh no dont think of Venezuela, think of sweden or denmark”. None of them are Socialist, but to avoid the complexities of Venezuela is to imagine that US attempts at socialism wouldn’t involve significant capital flight. If we don’t consider that, if we don’t have solid actionable plans to deal with that, while also facing the inherent complexity of changing material conditions, then we’re gonna waste whatever shot we get.

They preexisted chavez, but they were able to proliferate and be given legal recognition through him. I understand that legal recognition can act to ‘name’ a body & pin it to smth that doesn’t match its requisite variety - how dynamic it is, but imo as its currently legislated it recognizes a good amount of the autonomy that they had already been excersizing. - liable to change government recognition of co-ops has drawbacks too, and correlates negatively with that coop’s success

The cooperative services I experienced and learned about in Venezuela were health, dental, food, and a separate example of trash services. A dental cooperative […] provides quality dental services (I know because I used them) almost every day for affordable prices. You don´t have to be a member of the cooperative, and you don´t have to make an appointment. It takes only a couple of hours, and emergency situations are treated with urgency. The health center, built with funds provided by all the associated cooperatives[…], works the same way. Anyone can go there, the services are subsidized by the cooperative so they are affordable, the clinic and workspaces are clean and well taken care of, and the quality of the service is great. Worker-members of the cooperative receive health care at the facility without charge except for the massage and acupuncture services that they also provide at a really low price.

[…] food services are priced to provide more access to food for the community in which it exists. The original and persistent intention is to make the best situation for people on all ends of the process. The producers are part of the cooperative and are part of the group that decides the prices that growers get, as well as the prices that the food is sold for. This means that both farmers and workers at the market decide what to charge a person, which ultimately affects how much money the growers receive, as well as if the food is affordable for the people who need to eat who live in the city. In a normal capitalist market system these parties are separated and put up against each other, raising prices for consumers and lowering them for small producers, excluding those people from getting enough money to afford all the necessities that are typically only provided at a high price.

One communal council, a parallel governing organization of community members linked to investment funds from the national government, in the city of Merida, Venezuela organized themselves to get funds to buy a trash collection truck. The truck at the time was used for a specific waste removal project that removed waste from their community regularly but was not a traditional collection service. However, they did have plans to expand the project to start their own collection service, and this would be provided by the commal council, an anti-capitalist organization which does not require people to pay for the service. Although this is not a “co-operative” as some hardliner co-operative enthusiasts might point out, it is a horizontal anti-capitalist organization widening access of necessary services to the larger community run by community members; following cooperative values of equity, inclusion, and solidarity I believe this to be an example of cooperative economics and action. It appears to me that economic inclusion is much more likely to widen only when those who are being excluded are included in the process of organizing the services and are in control of the economy.“

until the communes, workers cooperatives, and the like are strong enough to rule themselves, having Maduro in power is the only option given to us which doesn’t trigger the control of reactionaries. People make their own history, but not in situations of their choosing - the exact outcome isn’t predetermined, but there’s only a limited number of poles - gravitational attractors - towards which that trajectory is heading at any particular time.

if maduro acts to squash the power of the communes, then thats a different situation. but until that point, we outside of the country must work to center any discussion on these bodies - they are the heart of the country and of whatever social revolution has occurred/is further possible. They are filled with lessons for us to learn from, and show how rich and dynamic the organized populace can be if they are allowed to control their communities. This is all said with recognition that many chavistas have acted against communes, the bureaucratic machine acts to co-opt much of their energy, its linguistically obscured the concept of "ownership” with that of “control”, and that the state has changed its messages over time. But the heart of the communes is what’s a priority, and they have acted against the government overstepping its bounds & mis-identifying them. But whats important is that there’s a feedback process in the gvt to actually allow them to assert their autonomy. Liberals will do their utmost to close those channels.

If Guaido and the Popular Will take control of power, be assured that whatever gains made in organizing the everyday people of Venezuela will be at the top of the chopping block. How effective that suppression turns out to be is undetermined - it might turn out to strengthen the communes, but that outcome would be damage control, not something to try and bullseye.

Effective Propaganda knows that its more effective to control what’s left out than control what’s put in. Keep that in mind, and study trajectories and forces.
