Head Scratches
AgedUp!Neteyam x Human!Reader
Fluff/Self-indulgence lol
You lifted your hand to stifle the laugh wanting to leave your throat, lips brushing your palm as you grinned.
Neteyam was kneeled next to where you were sitting at your desk, his bright eyes widened and his chin tilted to the side as he watched the lazy ball of fluff on your computer screen.
Your cat's equally large eyes were looking up at the camera, ears erect and tail swishing gently behind him.
You cheerful mood was caused by Neteyam, who seemed to be mimicking every little head tilt and ear twitch of your cat - the fluff of his tail brushing your ankle from where it was curled around it.
'Paskalin, he can see me no?' Neteyam's braids swayed softly as he turned his gaze to you before returning back to the screen, ears perking up higher as your giggle echoed again.
'No, it's a video from back home.' You then pointed to the background, your old apartment and bedroom in view.
In the video, your hand could be seen reaching out, the cats purr loud through the speakers as your fingers scratched gently under his chin and then up behind his ears.
'He really likes head scratches and his fur's super soft'.' You spoke fondly, the video coming to an end and a black screen replacing it.
'Do you miss him?' Neteyam turned fully to where you were still facing the computer.
You then felt your chair being turned as Neteyam grabbed the armrest, pulling until your knees were on either side of him - his head still managing to be higher than yours from his kneeling position.
Your cheeks flushed as his obvious show of strength but you nodded nevertheless, eyes unable to hold contact from his intense stare.
'Mhm. Come.' Neteyam didn't even wait for you to agree before he threaded his hands under your arms and pulled you to his chest.
You held your breath slightly when he stood to his full height, the sudden distance from the ground making your stomach drop slightly.
His oversized hands then came to your thighs, pushing them to wrap around him slim cut waist as he left your private lab - footsteps quick as he carried you to the exit.
'Here Yawne.' Neteyam's voice was light as he handed you your breathing mask, watching patiently as your strapped it to your face - still not questioning where he was taking you.
Once you were ready, you rested back against his chest - hearing the seal door open and then shut as Neteyam stepped out, before his feet carried him on.
You watched the trees and greenery go by, eyes threatening to shut in relaxation as the steady heartbeat of your mate matched his footsteps.
'No sleeping Paskalin. Not yet.' Neteyam chuckled, hand coming up to gently rub your back but it only further soothed you.
'Where're you taking me?' You mumbled.
'Somewhere we can rest.' You didn't question him again, opting to just ride out his kindness of carrying you.
Soon enough, you both slowed to a stop and you had to hold back a whine when Neteyam kneeled again, you still tight his grasp.
You were still getting used to being handled like a doll.
'I won't drop you, I tell you this every time.' You laughed quietly at Neteyam's statement, resting you whole body weight as he leaned back against a tree - large hands bringing you with him softly.
With your head rested just under his chin, Neteyam then reached out and gently took your hand, fingers massive in comparison as he pulled it up until your hand was resting just under his pointed ear.
You smiled when his hand left yours, understanding the message clear as day.
Like muscle memory from back home, you gently scratched behind his ear - fingertips dragging to just under his jawline and then back, constantly rotating.
With your head still resting against his chest, you could feel his purr coming before you even heard it - laughing lightly at the familiar sound.
'Your just an overgrown cat 'Teyam.' Shifting up more so you were tucked further under his chin, forehead rested against his neck - you sighed when he only pulled you closer.
'Only for you Yawne.'

Hi, I hope you are having an amazing day (js as amazing as you), and have eaten, slept, and drank water. You are beautiful, and a very and I mean VERY kind person. Make sure to take care of yourself, I'll probably annoy you with how often I say but I do care, make sure your in good health before going to to our entertainment I would like to share my thoughts, this one I js thunk,
so I've been thinking a lot about that one drabble you did with Dokusha being Obanai's best friend. Well if that were in the Kimetsu Academy! Au, would Dokusha be like a fellow teacher or a friend (outside of work). But I feel like Dokusha still would help him with courting Mitsuri. But how close would they be? And I was thinking about, how would Kimetsu Academy au! Obanai react to sharing Dokusha as his favorite student with another teacher like Giyuu or someone. Anyways, srry for popping up again in your inbox, I js have a lot of thoughts. Anyways have a good day! Eat, sleep (you update a lot, ik), and take care of yourself, you are amazing, and I hope you wake up feeling like you could take the world on (bc you sure as hell do). Drink water, and if you do go out, be safe (ik I sound like a mother lol).
Bye!!! ILY!!!
-S.P.
Hmmm. This is pretty simple, I like the idea and yes. You do sound like a mother but that’s okay! It’s just being a good caring person and I don’t mind. But anyway, Jealous father figure teacher Obanai be like~!
Iguro Obanai- Back Off
Tumblr media
Obanai is so jealous… he is jealous and he can barely keep himself calm at this rate. He’s a fully grown man(with the height of a child). He shouldn’t be jealous over a student bonding with another teacher, even if the student is his absolute favourite. He can’t help but feel jealous over the idea of you liking another teacher as much as you like him
Obanai’s favourite easily is you, a simple teen but you’re so sweet, caring and you don’t bother him like all his other students do. You follow his orders and you always do your best. You treat him with respect and for that, he treats you with respect as well
Obanai doesn’t want to be possessive or creepy over you. You’re just a child after all but he can’t help but feel so sour and distasteful over the fact you’re bonding well with Giyuu Tomioka, the strict P.E Teacher. You’re so kind that even Giyuu can’t help but feel comfortable with you and talk to you when you arrive to his class
Obanai would never ever personally pry you away from the teachers you happen to like and befriend very well but he hopes he is never replaced by another teacher. He views you like a surrogate child of his own and he actually wants you to view him as your favourite
Obanai, also, won’t try sabotage or ruin your relationships with other teachers. He may really like you but he isn’t going to do anything awful. You still need other friends but he just wants to be the teacher you like the most. He likes you the most of all other students in this Academy after all
Obanai will force himself to willingly share you around with his fellow teachers since your happiness matters a lot to him. If you want to do tutoring with somebody else, other than him, that’s fine. Just do come back to him at one point, please…
Obanai is kinda like a clingy protective and jealous papa to you. He and his beloved Kaburamaru are always happy to see you come into their classroom and sometimes, the two will give you cute nice candy gifts
Obanai just grits his teeth and bares through the jealousy over you bonding with teachers, especially with Giyuu. At least, you’re not miserable and you have even more skills and teachings being taught by other teachers. He is proud and thankful over that fact, drowning out his jealousy
“Dokusha. Please come to my classroom at this moment, say goodbye to Tomioka-sensei and follow. We must talk about your latest test”

Divinity lams AU?
Alex is some divine, etheral being and John is just a pathetic and lost fallen angel who swears his devotion to this 'otherworldly being' for the privilege of following him around and being with him for eternity because it gives him a purpose. And at first, Alex just sees him as this sad soul whos's lost and doesnt know what to do and genuinely takes pity on him; but eventually it goes from a 'worshiped and worshiper' relationship to a relationship in which Alex see's him as an equal despite being nothing but.
And even before this, John had been searching for guidance through other people because he never fully trusted his instincts and yet this had only led him to be distrusting because the very reason he had 'fallen' was because he had followed anothers lead. In turn, he turned to etheral 'gods' who he knows cant do him wrong because they'll always view themselves as above him, and with pledging his devotion, they cant turn on him because he will forever be their faithful subject.
Unfortunately for John his devotion borders more on obsession. He loves looking up to see someone so majestic staring back down at him with such a soft smile in contrast to piercing eyes and to know Alex would be looking at him makes his heart flutter and insides melt and skin on In fire(figuratively..) and makes him just want to cut off his wings and give them to Alex as a sign of his true adoration he holds for him. And obviously this concerns Alex. I mean, his poor devotee is willing to do anything for him but theres a line, right? Alex still cares for him of course, what kind of being would he be if he allowed someone to sacrifice their own peace for him?
Cue emotional outburst number one! John would be rambling softly about how if he had the strength he would just rip out his wings and alex has to lean down and gently rest his palm on John's cheek to tell him not to ruin his beautiful wings and that being with him is devotion enough for him and that physical pain in his name would only cause harm. And then tears, of course, in natural angst fashion.
Oh, and John has an immense fear of corrupting Alex the entire time due to the fact hes a 'sinner' (by his own standards) and being in the presence of such divinity as a 'corrupted being' puts Alex at risk to fall from his stance of power. But even despite his fear he can't leave not only due to this eternal soul-binding agreement, but because being in his presence makes him feel alive and as though he can feel love again even after he had failed in doing so for so many years. But in the end Alex doesnt see himself as higher or with more power but as an equal.
John would have 'given up' his ability to feel love for another in order to be fully devoted to Alex, and yet he was convinced he didnt have it in the first place so he decided he wouldnt be giving it up if he never had it. But in turn he discovered that he did have the ability to love, but it had to be discovered through giving up the ability to love anyone other than Alex, and in a way hes happier with that.
But even so, John doesnt think hes worthy enough to be so close to someone so much better than he is, and he does view it as a privilege to be there until Alex tells him to stand up in which he physically has to look down at alex(he would stand at other points, of course, but he would never physically look down. If alex would speak to him he would physically attempt to lower his height to keep Alex above him by his own personal will.) But that is the point where he would cup johns face and then tell him that he's wonderful and the most faithful devotee hes had the 'honor' of being with and then tears. so many tears. so many pent up tears form years john has been telling himself that he cant feel love and to even be in the vicinity of Alex is a privilege that he doesnt deserve just to be told to his face that this divine being loves him and appreciates everything hes done and he doesnt want John to be hurt for him.

hello broski 🗣️🙏💥 can you make Yandere!Jack headcanons, scenarios, or just anything and the reader is a close friend of Jack
Hey hey- And thank you for the request lmao-
• He doesn’t know how you suddenly came into his life. But he views you as the very light he could count on.
• Being the very best friend of Jack has its benefits and its consequences.
• On the first hand, you get free tea and treats. Jack may try to cook new things for you. You got a favorite food? He’s serving it in the first time you come over to his house. You also get protected whenever you go out at night, whether you know of it or not. Jack is also just a gentleman, so he wouldn’t dare to leave you in hands he doesn’t trust. Which means that he stays with you pretty much every damn time, and the fact that you don’t seem to mind only influences it more-
• On the other hand… Jack has a… very bad stalking problem- He’s figured out everything about you. Height? He’s got it. Your darkest secret? He somehow fucking knows- Anything in your past? He knows it. Jack views his stalking problem as protecting you from the filth that lurk the alleys and streets in London at night. And if he does know that someone’s targeting you, he will not go “forgive and forget”, he will go, “stab and stab”. He got that problem, and he don’t care-
• Due to you being his best friend and pretty much hanging out with him every hour or every day, it didn’t get very hard for him to notice that he had certain feelings for you, and that he bonded with you much more than originally thought. He actually wanted to know more about you. He wanted to see those purified colors of yours once more.
• The bliss once you see him… That friendly color… Something so kind… Something so warm… Jack didn’t know what it was at first.
• He even wanted to get away from you because of how it made him felt. Yet, he couldn’t help but gravitate towards you once you saw him somewhere else near the usual meeting spot. And from then, Jack knew fully well he couldn’t avoid you, whether he wanted to or not.
• So, he accepted it. And once he did, it wasn’t so bad. He followed you around when you dragged him to certain stores to try things. Hearing your cheerful voice made something in his chest churn with need for something. But, he kept the feeling down, making sure to help you with anything you needed.
• And somewhat… Jack felt as if he should be the one to help you with everything. He wanted to be the man that accompanied you to stores or bars. He wanted to be the man that helped you with anything you needed. He wanted to be the man that’s beside you, protecting you and simply being there to make sure you’re safe.
• Eventually, Jack was noticing how clingy he was being. How close he wanted to be with you. And he knew it was starting to become smothering at that point. Yet, he just didn’t care. He wanted you safe. He wanted you away from all those creeps in alleyways and streets at night. And the only way to do that… is to stalk you and protect you at night.
• Oh, if only you knew, dear…
• Jack may consider sneaking into your home, watching you to make sure you were “safe”. Totally not to watch you and your colors while you were sleeping-
• Yeah… He knew fully well he had feelings for you by that time.
• It’s even fully visible to people that are outside, watching as Jack interacts with you. The way he kisses the knuckles of your hand, even if you may be a man. The way he looks at you. The way he follows you around like a lost puppy. The way Jack’s aura completely changes when the attention shifts from his conversation to someone else. How that aura shifts from content and happiness to disturbance and irritation at who dared to interrupt his time with you.
• And that person could feel the very stare he gives them. That simple stare that simply orders for them to leave unless they need something important.
• I swear. If someone flirts with you. They are not seeing the light of day again.
• He is going to brutalize that fucker at night and make sure you’re safe after by making sure you’re home. Simply watching through your window or watching from beside you on your bed is perfect enough. However, he prefers the latter. How would he be able to adjust your hair or brush a finger by your cheek if he was behind a simple window?
• Jack feels nothing but warmth and shivers every time he gets to grab your hand. Or rather, any touch from you gives him bliss. Holding his hand to drag him somewhere? He can feel those butterflies in his stomach. A literal hug? Jack can feel himself starting to deteriorate in mental terms. You would actually bother to hug him… a Killer, and an obsessed man… Of course, you don’t know it, but Jack feels nothing but bliss when he hugs you back.
• And when he gets home or somewhere private. Maybe he could be waiting for you somewhere? Well, in that time, he’s thinking of that hug. Those times you let him hold your hand. He’s thinking about how warm it felt to do so. To feel the gentle clenches of your hand every time you found something interesting, and to see the flaring color in your body once you locked your eyes onto the thing you wanted.
• Sometimes… your color is too much for him… and yet, he can’t help but smile and keep up with you. Even if you can’t see his colors… The very murky colors that lay deep within him, he knows that love is in there. That orange or yellow color, whether it’s sullied with the darkness of his own heart. Jack knows it’s there. And he will not let go of it, under any circumstances.
• Somewhat, Jack thinks about what could be done if he and you were something more than best friends. He questioned you about it once, only to get the ask of “Mega best friends”. He could only chuckle in reply, but had the slight disappointment of knowing you didn’t get what he meant. However, perhaps that may be the best thing…
• He could joke around with you about killing someone close to you, and you wouldn’t know what he means by it, so you shrug it off.
• With anyone else, that could have been a stupid move. Though, with Jack, he regarded it as part of your charm.
• Even if he did really mean that he would kill someone close to you-
• Sometimes when he accompanies you, Jack sees that you sometimes see one or two of your friends. While he doesn’t particularly mind them, a certain one has been scratching at the surface of his jealousy.
• The man doesn’t deserve a name, and Jack couldn’t fully care to know of it. So, he simply watched the colors with the man, seeing how they had swam with infatuation and need.
• … Ah. Looks like Jack may have another job for tonight.
• But for now, he tolerated the behavior. Even with how much it fired off his alarms that you were being flirted with, Jack had to wait until midnight. He had to.
• He knows that if the flirting got too far for you, then he would step in. And somewhat got to that point, leading to Jack giving that man a side eye with his color seeing eye behind his own hair.
• And from that man’s experience, feeling the very aura Jack emitted off whilst he sent that glare did not feel nice- So, to his relief, the man had backed out on flirting more, saying that he had something to do before stepping away.
• And now that the disturbance was off… Jack could finally have his time with you. He continued to follow you to where you wanted to go, holding your bags and accompanying you like a true gentleman. Yet, even with how blissful he wanted it to be, Jack couldn’t get that man out of his head. He wanted that man out. He wanted that man away from your life, and to do that, he would have to remove that man himself.
• So, once you were done with your business and went home, he had immediately gotten to work.
• That man had never stood a real chance. It didn’t seem worth the effort either. If by any chance that Jack gets a small cut on a noticeable spot, he could always bandage it and maybe have you pay some attention to it, but, nah-
• Anyhow, it didn’t take long to get the incoming problem over with. Jack had made sure to put the man in the best of fear before making him understand precisely that he wouldn’t play around. Jack made him promise to never interact with you again, even if it included putting a few wounds on him. Even if it included stabbing his dick.
• Normally, Jack doesn’t care about the pain of others. He only cared about the fear. But with those he gets rid of because they had a death wish by flirting with you way too much for comfort, he has a specific need or love for torturing or injuring them where it hurts the most.
• Hell, he may even leave the people close to death and burn them as well as the location down whilst he goes back home, content with one less rival.
• God, imagine if Noah was one of his rivals. That would be perfect HH-
• But, Jack now has himself beside you, simply watching as you sleep. He feels nothing but relief and infatuation whenever he sees you.
• He never knew that love could take him so far… Yet, he wonders how high it can take him. How high it can take him before he snaps and eventually claims you for himself.
• But for now… he’ll remain with you in silence of his own feelings. He’ll keep being the gentleman that’s in love with you for now. That is, until he decides that enough is enough.

" It's okay. It's not your fault. " Cassie reassures, sounding a little weary, but it's more so at her overall situation than Freddy's capacity to help her (or lack thereof.) In fact, he's arguably been the most help she's gotten so far even if mostly moral-- well there's Helpi, but a lot of his help has felt... backhanded, to say the least.
But first things first: her flashlight predicament.
Granted, it's likely the least of her problems in the grand scheme of things, but it's still a necessity; Visibility has become a great issue with the PizzaPlex in the dilapidated state it has gotten. Walking around blindly is a good way to, for example, fall through a hole she'd otherwise notice with a light source.
Not to mention the flashlight helped make things a bit less scary for a little kid, and Cassie could use all the peace of mind she can get.
Wait, "be back"? Before she can inquiry what Freddy had in 'mind', the damaged Glamrock was backtracking, soon only his heavy steps echoing through the ruined attraction being what Cassie could make out in the darkness (her view range was much shorter without the flashlight.) Good thing she could hear him to get a general idea of his location. Still she felt pretty lost as she remained in place, antsy; like being stranded on a raft in the open ocean.
She nearly misses Freddy being right down the platform, but the flashlight was still on, so she could notice the light moving in the darkness when he held it back over the edge.
" Oh. Oh, you found it! Thank you! " Cassie bends down to take the flashlight back. " Great job, superstar. " ... it felt an appropriate praise for his help. She spares a moment to look the flashlight over in her hand: She's mild surprised that it didn't break upon being dropped... half the time, Fazbear Entertainment-branded things are so cheaply-made, that breaking them just by staring a little too hard wasn't fully out of the realm of possibility.
" Huh? Help getting down? " Cassie lays out, again to make sure she got Freddy right. " Wait, let me see... " She points the flashlight down over the edge to assess the bottom and height a little more clearly, aside from seeing him standing down there as well. She lightly bites the inside of her cheek.
Tumblr media
" Umm... I... I think I might need the help, yes. I'm kinda scared of jumping down myself and breaking a leg or something... "
Which might not be an actual risk, but badly spraining an ankle instead or sustaining some kind of injury due to landing 'wrong' had a pretty good chance of happening.

[Yet again, the girl's wording perplexed Freddy; she thought she had "lost Gregory, too?" From context, he assumed she meant that she thought he'd died...which meant that somebody else in her life had either passed or gone missing before him. That theory might have been correct, as not long after, she confirmed that Gregory was "all she had left." Perhaps...she had lost her family. The implication was there; it seemed that she was relying on her friend, which did not inspire Freddy with confidence about her home life.]
[Freddy was programmed to contact security or social services when it came to abandoned children; guards would look after them until their families came back, and in a worst-case, he might have to watch as the foster care system took over. He wasn't sure if he could commit to either method now, in his condition. Some intrinsic part of his programming wanted to look after her himself, knowing that she had a lack of guardianship...but he did not know if he would be a good fit. He was broken, and he was not sure if he could be fixed. He was at a complete and utter loss, and it devastated him.]
I̶̛̻̼̳͊͛ ̸̖̫̝̈̓A̴̜͍̬͐̈́͛M̴͌̑͘ͅ ̷͙̱̒̓S̶̛̥̟Ò̷̢̰͖Ŕ̷̬̰R̴̍͠ͅY̴͇̊.̷͚̑̏͠ (I AM SORRY.)
[That was as much as he could say, at least without overloading his voice box. He was in no condition to care for her. What a sorry excuse for a Fazbear.]
[Regardless, she continued, informing Freddy of the details surrounding Gregory's situation; apparently, he had been caught beneath Roxy Raceway. Something had "grabbed him," and refused to let him go. Perhaps Freddy was being overly skeptical, but that did not sound like a trustworthy account of events...if the animatronics here were being hostile, and he doubted that, then they would have hurt or killed him by now. He would be in no condition to communicate. There was also little chance that he had been kidnapped, as the animatronics would never keep a child from their parent or guardian. It might be that Gregory had gotten himself stuck in part of the sinkhole, but still...Freddy was wary of this explanation.]
[The girl also had an explanation for how Gregory had eluded Freddy's proximity sensors; he was apparently very sneaky, and was experienced with evading the animatronics. Freddy could believe this -- as effective as his sensors were, they were not foolproof. If something was far enough away, then he would not register it as an obstacle or a disturbance. Still...this "Gregory" character, at least the one Cassie was describing, struck him as odd.]
[Was he overthinking things?]
[Freddy didn't have the opportunity to voice his doubts -- besides, he wasn't sure if he'd be able to. Before he could say anything, the girl had an abrupt realization about the loss of her flashlight; his sensors indicated that she was again hovering over the edge of the platform. Had she dropped it? That was a simple enough fix. Freddy should be able to head down there, no problem...though he needed a roundabout route. He could not make that jump, either.]
I̸͓̞̅̊ ̷̙̋̉͝Ẇ̷̭I̵̩̓L̶̥̦̘͘L̸̢͚̈̉ ̵̝̌͗̂B̶̻͊̓̒É̵͍̝̹͌̐ ̴̢̮̈̑B̵͇̠̟͆͐Ḁ̷̳̙͋̒C̸̺̈̉͝Ḱ̶̛͚̇.̶̱̋ (I WILL BE BACK.)
[Hopefully, that was understandable enough to reassure her. Freddy walked away from the platform, guiding himself through the debris until he was on the opposite side -- the same one as her flashlight. He felt around for it on the ground, picked it up, and handed it back over the edge to her.]
D̷̝̬̎ͅO̶̢̖̗̓̍ ̴̗͖͂̿Y̷͍̫̍Õ̶̳͎̃̅Ŭ̵̹ ̵̭̹͝N̸̡̞͗͝ͅÈ̷̺̾̕E̶̗̩̿͜Ḑ̵̲̰̔ ̶͉̎H̶̛̛̹̉Ẻ̴̯̝̉Ḷ̵̨̢̊P̷͇̻͍̍ ̵̃̏͜Ĝ̵̟͋̓͜E̷̝͔̫͘Ṭ̸̓T̷̟̩͍̿I̵̪͛͠N̵͖̜̋͋Ġ̷̹ ̷̫̪͍͛̐̾D̴͈̤͇̒͗͝Ó̶̝̓W̵̖̊̈́N̸̥̊͑?̴̛̦͔̜̊ (DO YOU NEED HELP GETTING DOWN?)

hazama is so interesting like. idk. something so horrifically cool about the fact that we have never ever seen him detached from terumi prior to trinity forcing terumi out of there. like he straight up has never known individuality before this. people give him a lot of flack for the atrocities but what other frame of reference does he fucking have? he's always been terumi, for better or worse. what he has of his own has always fitted into the spaces between a well-established Somebody. he is a hollow shell in mind and body. and suddenly he has to figure out what will fill it.
can you blame him for following the only understanding of the world he’s ever known? can you blame him for having to scramble for any way he can understand himself and the world around him? he's literally new here, and nobody seems to get that except him and like a select couple other guys who are either already in on it or he told them himself. like not saying that it was totally cool that he put rachel in a blender for 20 hours but i can see where he was coming from a bit. i feel like he is semi-fixable. if you tried. largely the problem is that no one is and blazblue is never going to happen now lol :|
but i like him. sometimes i think about that time he was left behind in the parallel domestic universe and it genuinely affected him. enough to scare him. he comprehends just enough to know that love exists but not enough to believe it could actually ever be directed at him. he can’t even take terumi’s goodbye seriously, such as it is. he just doesn’t really know where to begin with something like that. might be wishful thinking but i’d like to believe that someday he will.
also the cross tag story stuff is canon in my heart at least for hazama, he should be allowed to be horrible gameshow host buddies with system forever that shit probably made him like 20% closer to well-adjusted just on its own

There's a Chat in OM where Satan shows concern over Beel because he saw Beel talking to himself, crouched down in the garden, which Beel later reveals to have been him talking to a very frail plant he found because Mammon told him that talking to flowers helps them grow.
And what I adore about this is that it shows things about the brothers involved that we don't always get to see in the main game, or that are sometimes overlooked for the funny hijinks.
- Beel notices incredibly small details. The flower is small and hidden enough that Satan initially thinks he's talking to himself. He doesn’t actually see the plant at all. And Beel is the tallest brother, so it's not as if his height would be any help to him noticing something on the ground that's small, hidden, and frail, especially when he’s doing a task like watering the garden. That’s just a job to be done, and most people would pay more attention to where the water’s going and how much there’s left to do than they would to each individual flower. He must have been paying genuinely close attention to his surroundings to even notice it to begin with.
- Beel's care for things extends even to nature. He talks to the plant because he wants to help it grow. It's just a small, dying flower, one of however many there are in the House’s garden; there’s no reason to fret over it when there’s probably plenty of other flowers around it, and maybe even flowers of the same species.
But Beel’s genuinely invested in bringing it back to health. He’s seen this tiny, sickly, insignificant flower, and his first thought is to make it better. It's why he later clarifies the situation to MC, asking for more help, because the flower hasn't shown any signs of improvement.
(Very quietly, it makes me wonder if part of the reason he does this is guilt. Maybe Beel just doesn’t like to see things that are dying.)
- Despite how the brothers act towards Mammon most of the time, Beel fully takes on his advice. He spends days talking to the flower because Mammon told him that's something that might work, and it's only when the flower hasn't gotten better that he seeks more help.
At no point did he question this advice. At no point did he think that the “scummy” second-born would say something stupid, or irrelevant, or unhelpful. Mammon told him to talk to the plant, and he so did.
He says that he asked because Mammon was nearby, but at any time he could have just walked right past him, found someone else, and asked them. He could have completely ignored the fact that Mammon was there - especially considering how little the brothers tend to think of his ideas, to begin with - and found someone “more competent”. But he didn’t.
Which means he genuinely has no issues turning to Mammon for help. He genuinely thinks Mammon can give competent advice.
Out of all the brothers, Beel is usually the best when it comes to their overall treatment of the second-born, so maybe that isn’t surprising - but he can be derisive as well.
So it's nice to see, in a situation where it was just the two of them, without the antagonising influence of the others, Beel show he's more than willing to listen to Mammon as a voice of authority and knowledge - especially over something he's worried about. He respects and trusts what Mammon says, and believes it.
- Mammon saw Beel worried over a plant - something small and insignificant that has no greater purpose in the world and hosts no real interest for either of them - and gave him the best genuine advice he could.
Mammon likely doesn't actually know how to care for sick plants, but wanted to try and give Beel something to work with. We know he cares for his brothers deeply - almost (if not exactly) to the point of self sacrifice - so it's not a stretch at all to say he probably suggested talking to the plant in full seriousness, hoping it would help Beel.
It's a common piece of advice, after all. I've heard people say it all the time, from the most amateur gardener to the most professional; talking to your plants keeps them happy and helps them grow.
The bit that really gets me about it, though, is the fact that Mammon... knew it? Out of all things, you'd expect him to care about gardening the least - and to suggest talking to a plant even less. It goes completely against his image, but not against what we know of Mammon as a kind and caring (as well as emotional) demon beneath the facade.
Him, in a similar position to Beel, crouched down low and out of sight to murmur quietly to a plant he thinks needs an extra boost, is well within the spectrum of things Mammon would do but deny doing if caught.
And I just think it's sweet, imagining him passing on advice he's used in the past over a similar thing he might have done to try and help his clearly worried little brother.
- Satan, in a chat with Solomon and MC, shows genuine care and concern towards Beel.
His first instinct is to ask MC and Solomon if they might know what’s going on. He’s noticed a pattern of behaviour that’s unusual for Beel - “sitting out in the garden, mumbling to himself”, to quote him directly - and once it’s gotten to a point that he’s worried, he asks if anyone else knows what’s wrong.
It shows a fair bit of forethought, too. Satan didn’t immediately assume something was up, didn’t immediately dogpile on Beel; he let it play out, keeping a close eye, until it went on for long enough that he thought it might be something bigger. He’s often shown as being thoughtful about how others might react to things (at least, when he’s not enraged), but it’s interesting to see the actual depth of not only his caring, but his understanding of emotional states and how to handle them.
Satan isn’t heartless. If he notices something wrong, he’s very likely to approach the person in question (or people he trusts) with his concerns in a very gentle manner explicitly to avoid overwhelming them. He actively cares enough to pay attention to the people around him, and to notice when someone starts acting differently.
This is especially sweet when it comes to Beel. The brothers have a tendency to treat Beel as the big, gentle giant who doesn’t have a worry in the world except for what he wants to eat. He’s quiet, complains little, and shoulders so many burdens in stride that they often overlook his struggles - if they’re even aware that they exist, because Beel loves his family so much he tries to avoid troubling them.
The fact, then, that Satan not only noticed, not only inquired about his health, but then - when Solomon and MC suggest that maybe Beel’s stressed out and bottling up his emotions - openly says this:
Tumblr media
Just shows so much love. The game sometimes overlooks just how much Satan loves his family, but this? This shows it, without a doubt.
- Satan messages the chat with Solomon in it.
This surprised me when I went back to look over the conversation; I genuinely remembered it as him talking to Levi, for some reason. Beyond that, if you asked me who I thought it’d be that he questioned for information regarding Beel’s health, it wouldn’t be Solomon that immediately jumped to mind.
In this situation, you’d think it’d make more sense for him to ask MC and Asmo (who he’s shown to have a very close and affectionate relationship with), or maybe MC and Belphie (who would probably be the first demon anyone should go to regarding Beel, and who Satan definitely gets on with).
As far as I’ve seen - which, admittedly, I’m not caught up on any of the Human World events from the main game beyond spoilers I’ve looked up - there’s not a lot of, if any, interactions between Beel and Solomon? Most of them are Solomon trying to give Beel food, and Beel trying to foister that food off onto someone else because Solomon’s cooking is one of the few things he can’t stomach.
So maybe it says more about Satan’s relationship with Solomon. Looking back through the chats, Solomon feels comfortable enough with Satan to outright ask him if he’s kissed MC (in the chat where Luke overheard Satan and MC talking about K.I.S.S.), and Satan doesn’t react negatively even though it’s a genuinely personal question.
Likewise, Satan, when furious over one of his dramas, immediately turns to the chat with MC and Solomon in it. He explicitly states that he doesn’t know what to do with the feelings he’s got left over from the cliffhanger, and wants to talk it over with the two humans. Which is interesting in two ways:
+ It shows that Satan is comfortable enough when angry to go to Solomon and MC, confident that they won’t actively make it worse (which is always possible when it comes to Satan’s Wrath once it’s ignited).
+ It shows that Satan’s more than happy to talk about how he feels in front of Solomon, and actively engaging him in that discussion. Yes, it’s only over a drama, but you don’t often turn to someone you don’t trust when you want to vent over something you’re passionate about.
There’s a fair bit of trust between them, I think, regardless of how either of them are typically viewed. Plus, the chat’s called Cat (3). It’s almost definitely just a pun, but the fact that a chat with Solomon and MC in it is also named after the one thing that can soothe Satan from an outright rage (as we’ve seen both in OtakuFM and in the main game) is interesting in what it implies about their relationship with him.
So, back to what I originally pondered: why did he go to Solomon and MC when he was concerned about Beel, and not Belphie (Beel’s twin, most likely to know what he’s up to) or Asmo (who lives at the House and is absolutely more likely to have seen Beel in the garden)?
He trusts Solomon and MC enough to take the matter seriously, with discretion.

HELLO, DARLING 💕💕 I'm here to bust in and ask for some sweet, sweet Twst fluff! May I have some Ruggie, Azul, and Deuce reacting to thier fem!s/o protecting them in a fight?? Maybe some dude trying to swing at them and their gf gets in the way and protects them! Pls give me the good, much love and you're amazing 💕💕💕💖💖💖
First request! Thank you so much honey I am always happy to provide some peak content~! I had way too much fun with this and it shows lmao but I hope you enjoy~! 💖 💖 💖
----------------
Ruggie
♡ Ruggie’s used to stepping on a few toes and tails with his antics - he’s a little trickster at heart but it’s all in good fun, he swears! It’s just unfortunate circumstances that perhaps one or two people sometimes get caught in the crossfire of his schemes, never anything too serious, but enough to leave more than a few people grumbling about it by the time things actually get sorted back out. Rarely do things ever actually spiral out of Ruggie’s control, and even if they do, chances are no one stays too mad at him for too long...most of the time. The times they do? They tend to get a bit out of hand.
♡ When a group of students attempt to corner him on the way back to the Savanaclaw dorm, he isn’t even sure what’s got them so heated - they start cussing him out, ranting about how he must think he’s such a wise guy, getting so cocky and not knowing his place. He’s not phased by what they say at all, if anything he’s not fussed in the slightest and would probably make a comment about them coming up with something more original if he could get a word in their bickering. It gets tiring real fast, and Ruggie’s looking for an out before these guys have even finished talking.
♡ Sure, he could use his unique magic in this situation, but given that it would only affect one of them and more than likely piss them off even more in the process, it wouldn’t do much to save his hide right now. Three against one hardly seems like a hard fight, but if Ruggie is even remotely concerned about the odds it doesn’t show for a second, instead - chances are, they’re just gonna yell it out of their system and then storm off so he can go back to what he was doing. Arguably, that just makes them angrier, and soon enough their heated bickering becomes thinly veiled threats, as though they’re trying to rile him up into instigating something - they want a reaction, an excuse to justify starting a fight, but Ruggie’s not naive enough to fall for that trick.
♡ When he doesn’t, one of the students finally snaps, lunging forward and snagging the collar of Ruggie’s uniform, bunching it up until he can feel knuckles pressed against his throat and he has to tilt his head up to avoid the fist curling underneath his chin. As the other hand rears back, the laid-back smile on his face becomes strained, and Ruggie squares the guy with a pointed stare as though waiting to call their bluff on actually taking a swing. He doesn’t get the chance to find out, as in the next moment the hand’s gone from his collar and Ruggie finds himself looking at the back of a blazer as a new voice joins the scene - one that he recognizes.
♡ He can’t see your face from this angle, but he can hear the hostility in your voice as you square up to the three boys, standing to your full height as you curse them out and order them to back up, asking what the hell they thought they were doing to your boyfriend. And just like that, those three hotheads dissolve into cowering pups right before his eyes, all bumbling words and awkward shifting as they try to talk their way out of the situation they’d been caught red handed in. They’re doing a poor job of it, and you’re clearly not buying it as you fold your arms and fix them with a scowl, taking a step forward as you move to completely shield Ruggie from their view.
♡ Ruggie can count the amount of times someone has actively gone out of their way to protect him on one hand, so the situation is as bizarre as it is entertaining. He feels a smug kind of pride at hearing you declare the word ‘boyfriend’, and hearing the anger in your voice is enough to convince him that it’s for the best to let you handle this whole thing. Still, Ruggie just can’t help but peek over your shoulder as you tear those guys a new one, shooting them a shit eating grin and enjoying the way that their expressions twist into grimaces, pissed but unable to do anything less they risk even more of your rage.
♡ All you have to hear is one of them mention ‘putting him in his place’ for your expression to visibly darken, and all three of them know that they’ve messed up at the sight of your face. You barely even have to feign lunging at them to get all three of them to bolt, just about toppling over each other as they flee down the corridor and round the corner, effectively vanishing from your sight. Even then you wait a beat, listening out for their footsteps until you can’t hear them anymore before you allow the tension to fall from your shoulders. Ruggie thinks that’s the perfect time to chime in, resting his head on the shoulder he was peeking over as he snickers.
♡ “Shishishi~! Did you see the way they ran? Talk about spooked!”
♡ You find yourself chuckling along with him as you look at him out of the corner of your eye, watching his expression carefully before you shift around to fully face him. The first words out of your mouth are words of concern, asking him if he’s okay and if they hurt him in any way. He’s quick to brush off any of your worries, giving you a non-committal shrug and assuring you that he’s fine - he’s dealt with way worse confrontations before, so it’s not skin off his hide now that they’ve scampered off.
♡ You’re not entirely convinced, he can see it in your face as you regard him - you seem to want to press the question on those ‘worse confrontations’, but after a moment you seem to drop it. Instead, you reach out and attempt to straighten out his collar and tie, though both are still a wrinkled mess by the time you’re finished; even so, Ruggie seems to appreciate the sentiment, and that lax grin from before is back as he slides out of your grip. He’s still gotta get back to the dorm, but it wouldn’t hurt to have company on the way back, if his new ‘bodyguard’ wants to tag along~
Azul
♡ Azul’s no stranger to people’s ire - he’s gained more than a few enemies over time, having his fair share of scorned patrons cursing his name before he’d even enrolled at Night Raven college. He’s learned quickly to gauge whether someone’s just blowing off steam or if they’re a serious threat, and he learned even quicker how to deal with those situations accordingly; after all, it’s bad business if you’re busy being hounded by clients looking for a bone to pick. He’s got countermeasures in play, and a few backup plans if things become too dicey for his liking, but he’s fortunately rarely had to use them barring one or two troublesome incidents thanks to the Leech twins.
♡ Floyd and Jade have, of course, been a big help in handling these little confrontations whenever they arise, having nipped most of them in the bud before they’ve even had the chance to darken the doors of the Monstro Lounge, so there’s been a relative peace in the place when people are there to have a good time rather than try and start fights.
♡ Things come to a head when someone actually manages to slip through into the Monstro Lounge, and Azul comes out of his office to the sound of someone shouting his name in a tone that sets the precedent that this is not going to be a peaceful interaction. He sees their face before they even turn to face him - expression twisted up in anger and hands balled at their side as they glare daggers at the other patrons, as if trying to discern if the dorm leader is sitting amongst them. Azul recognizes them immediately, and, upon realizing that the twins aren’t present in the lounge, rationalizes that it’s up to him to smooth things over before they end up disturbing the other patrons and causing too much of a disturbance. And so he plasters on his most neutral, unassuming smile, and greets the new ‘client’, watching them whip around to face him as he steps forward to talk to them.
♡ Azul already knows what they want to talk about - of course he does - he’s learned to keep track of every face that passes through those doors and his interactions with them. And yet he allows them to talk, and get what they want off of their chest; talking to them like this isn’t going to get them anywhere, and it appears they’re more in the mood for yelling than they are for actually talking. So he allows them to rant, if only to calm them down enough until he deems them rational enough to listen to what he has to say; and after a moment this seems to actually have done the trick, as the yelling soon quiets down in frustrated grumbling, and the eyes once drawn to the scene from nearby tables begin to return back to what had previously caught their attention. That’s when Azul finally speaks, extending an offer to finish this conversation back inside his office - after all, he’s sure they didn’t come here simply to make a scene when there’s a peaceful resolution to be reached, right?
♡ It’s with that thought in mind that leads Azul to a momentary slip in judgement - turning his back on the troublesome patron and begins to walk back towards his office, expecting them to follow him. Which they do, with a raised fist. He doesn’t hear them storm after him, but what he does hear is the gasps from onlookers as they watch the person in question rear back their hand, fist aiming right for the back of his head. It should have connected - afterall, they were close enough to have landed the hit, but it never comes.
♡ Instead, a sharp shove at his back has Azul’s stumbling, and not a moment later, he’s spinning around to see what’s going on and finds an unexpected sight. The patron’s sprawled out on the floor, cradling their face in both hands and swearing up a storm as they rock back and forth, nursing what looks like a solid hit to the nose. And towering over them is none other than you, blazer discarded and sleeves rolled up to the elbows as you shake off the hit from your hands, winding up your shoulders as you stare daggers down at his would-be attacker. It doesn’t take a genius to discern what’s just happened in the span of just a few moments, but Azul’s suspicions are all but confirmed when you snap at them to just try and punch him again - watch what happens, you dare them.
♡ Anger flashes across the patron’s face, and for a second Azul truly believes that he’s about to watch a brawl break out between this troublemaker and his girlfriend as both make a move to jump the other. Thankfully for all involved, they don’t get the chance to see that show, as not a moment too soon the twins are there to intervene and split it up before any real fight begins. Jade’s hands are on your shoulder, guiding you back gently but firm enough to ensure that he can pull you away from this fight if you try to push the issue; you reluctantly follow him as he backtracks over to where Azul is standing, still grumbling about it under your breath. Floyd, on the other hand, is all too eager to take care of the one still cradling their face, sporting the beginnings of a bloody nose as they’re hoisted up onto their feet and promptly directed to the nearest exit.
♡ Azul makes a note to deal with that person later - though he’s got a sneaking suspicion that the twins are already well on their way to taking care of that in his stead as Jade leaves to rejoin his brother once you’re standing face to face with their dorm leader. For now, he turns his attention to you, watching you huff and rub idly at the hand you’d punched with as the beginnings of an apology tumble from your lips.
♡ You didn’t mean to get involved and cause so much of a scene, but when he’d turned away and you saw the person rearing back to sock him, you were up from your table and swinging without a second thought. You couldn’t just sit there and let him get hurt, what kind of girlfriend would that make you if you did! You’d never let him get hurt as long as you were around - that was okay...right?
♡ The passion behind your voice is enough to convince him that you mean every word, and you can see his expression soften a little as he takes your hand into his own, thumb brushing over the scuffed skin of your knuckles, red marks becoming visible as a testament to the force behind your punch. Your expression twitches with a flash of discomfort - looks like you’d underestimated the force on your hand; Azul’s not surprised, going above and beyond was a penchant of yours that had gotten you this far, and perhaps what had led to you worming your way into his heart in the first place.
♡ At your expression, Azul gives your hand a pat before taking a step back, using the hold to guide you. He certainly doesn’t mind the protective streak - in fact it’s a rather endearing trait, one that deserves proper compensation in return. But the first order of business is getting that hand tended to, and Azul makes that his priority as he leads them to follow him to his office, pleased when you fall into step with him and follow his lead.
Deuce
♡ Honestly, with how much of a protector can be over his friends, Deuce is in desperate need of someone just as willing to square up for him. He takes their safety seriously, even though part of him knows that realistically they can all take care of themselves just fine if anything actually happened. That still doesn’t stop him from wanting to step in whenever things get dicey, especially whenever it comes to you or your friends, and that either becomes a sweet sentiment, or the bane of your existence depending on how many altercations this ends up dragging him into.
♡ Maybe it's because of this that a fight was bound to break out sooner or later, but for what it’s worth, this one wasn’t actually caused because of him - it was because of Grim. That feline had a habit of breaching people’s boundaries, and sure enough it was just a matter of time before things escalated into a fight before anyone even had a chance to figure out what had even happened. Deuce wasn’t around when it happened, but the sound of yelling had caught his attention and led to him looking into the passing hallway trying to figure out what was going on. He recognized some of the voices, he swears it, and sure enough he finds the owner of those voices right in the center of the hallway, a small circle of people getting into each other's faces.
♡ Both sides are yelling, and at the sight of Ace and Grim smack-dab in the middle of the bickering, Deuce finds himself getting in-between them if only to get the one guy waving his hands around away from his friends before someone got slapped. Almost immediately there’s a hand in his face, an accusatory finger jabbed in his direction as all that anger at his friends is now squared directly on him. Deuce feels himself getting angry the more this guy screams into his face, cutting him off every time Deuce tries to get a word in; it’s clear that he’s not going to get any answers from this guy any time soon, so he calls to his friends behind him, ignoring the shout of ‘Hey, don’t ignore me!’ directed at him as he does so.
♡ Deuce looks away for a second, talking to Ace over his shoulder to try and find out what started this whole thing in the first place, when he feels someone grab a fistful of hair and yanks. Pain blossoms through his scalp and he hisses, a hand flying up to snag the wrist of the guy and wrenching it forward, digging his fingers in to force him to let go only for the hand to grip tighter. There’s another sharp tug, and Deuce can see Ace and Grim diving forward to help him from the corner of his eye, their shouts of protest only seeming to anger the guy more as they round in on him.
♡ But someone else gets there first, and just like that the hand is being wrenched from Deuce’s hair and he hears something go sliding across the floor. Turns out it’s the guy, whose expression is a mix of anger and bafflement as he tries desperately to reach for something behind him - no, someone. There’s a hand wound into the back of the guy’s blazer, hoisted up enough that he has to arch to go along with the item of clothing. The guy tries to reach behind him, but every time another hand peeks out from behind him to swat it away with ease, eliciting frustrated whines when the guy realizes he’s stuck.
♡ Deuce’s face must be priceless as he takes in the scene, watching a familiar head duck out from around the guys shoulder and flash him a grin, giving him a thumbs up. He hadn’t even seen you in the crowd, did you jump in when you saw him getting hurt? A part of him feels bad that you’d seen it happen in the first place, but that’s soon quashed when you turn your focus back to the guy who’d swung, who by this point had lost the gumption to keep swinging and was now just waiting for you to release your grip.
♡ You give it a few more seconds for good measure, before you allow your hold to loosen and you step away, still giving the guy a cautious glance as you move to stand in front of Deuce, Ace and Grim in a protective stance. There’s a beat of tenseness, waiting to see if the fight is going to start back up again, but when the group starts backtracking, retreating to who knows where else, it’s clear that at least for now things have been resolved. And with that out of the way, you turn your attention back to the boys, sticking Grim a pointed stare as you huff out that you’re talking to him about this later.
♡ Then you turn your focus over to Deuce, and he immediately straightens up under your attention waiting for some kind of comment about the confrontation, or maybe a warning for him to be more careful. You take his face into your hands, and though confused, he follows along with your movements as you urge him to look down; he doesn’t know what you’re doing until he feels a hand smooth through his hair, easing the tousled hair back into place as you ask him if it still stings. Your tone is soft, and Deuce finds himself flushing as he hurriedly reassures you that it doesn’t hurt - it’s fine, really! You’re not entirely swayed, but the moment is broken when you hear Grim make a gagging noise telling you to stop being so weird. And just like that your attention is back onto Grim again, fully prepared to choke him with that damn bow as Deuce straightens back up, carding a hand through his hair and trying to will away the pink flush beginning to rise to his cheeks.

Please do Soriel for the analysis:3
Alright gamers
My time has come.
Its time to find out why goat mom X funny sad skeleton dude a popular ship (romantic or platonic). Why is their relationship so endearing to many people? And; more importantly, what can their relationship tell us about ourselves?
Chapter 1: Aesthetics (for the shippers who ship them because they look cute together)
Let's start with aesthetics, because why not?
In general, height differences is a pretty popular trope within shipping.
Some popular ships with height differences include:
- Joyce and Hopper from Stranger Things
- Kokichi Ouma and Shuichi Saihara from Danganronpa
- Yaku Morisuke and Haiba Lev from Haikyu!!
Sans and Toriel are no exception, since they are shown to be completely different heights.
Tumblr media
On another note, the two work well together compositionally because you have a tall, aloof (I know it's not presented above, but anyone who's seen her fight knows what I mean), feminine figure put against a small, lighthearted, chill guy. At the same time, the two share a similar softness in their appearance that ties them together despite their differences.
In a way, its kind of funny how one of them is this god of dank memes and the other is a soft, mother-like figure.
Chapter 2: The Dynamic
Typically, with the right amount of differences and similarities in two or more character's personality are; their pairing will become popular because their personalities balance each other out. As an example:
Toriel and Sans are both hardworkers for their family BUT this is shown in different ways. Such as Toriel working harder in an obvious manner (like baking pies, making a learning schedule for Frisk, etc) while Sans works in more subtle ways (like working multiple jobs to support his brother, and silently looking after Frisk).
(If you want a better explanation on Sans hidden worker side and why he appears lazy; check out ♡Miss_Ruby♡ post: Why Soriel Works, right here.
(In fact, the following post goes into more details about their relationship rather than why people ship them. I fully recommend checking it out as their post helped give me some insight into soriel)
Another example of their dynamic is:
Toriel and Sans act like dorks around each other. Undyne revealed in the winter clock anniversary that they played hockey together like two idiots via hitting their sticks together playfully. Also, Toriel and Sans have some silly banter about Papyrus's favorite food (like how Toriel refers to Sans as a goblin in an endearing way) in the Undertale Post Pacifist Ending Q/A.
(Side note: other characters appear to view the two as having a close bond. When Asgore sees Sans getting chummy with Toriel, he starts crying. Undyne soon comforts him by using the good old phrase: "There are plenty of fish in the sea.")
Tumblr media
Moving on from that, lets talk about green flags. A green flag in relationships is when you improve yourself for the other person (as in changing your unhealthy habits for each other. Not changing who you are as a person to appease a hypocrite) The wholesome change made from their relationship is present in Toriel and Sans.
Some examples includes:
- Sans being inspired by Toriel to bake even when he might not have the motivation or energy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- Toriel cheering up from her personal demons after adopting San's sense of humor
Tumblr media
In a way, their relationship actually reminds me of Jessica and Rodger rabbit
Tumblr media
As in: a tall, calm lady with a hidden sense of humor who becomes close with a short, goofy man because of their personalities and humor.
(Side note: Rodger and Toriel both deal with chaotic children, while Sans and Jessica both bond over their respective buddy because they think they are funny. Evidence for this includes the comment San's made about Toriel's Old Lady yodel joke shown below).

Chapter 3: The Shippers Themselves
A while back, I read an interesting post on tumblr that stated that
"The real ship dynamic is yourself X your type"
Sadly, I forgot who made the post (if you can find the original creator please tell me so I can credit them)
OP has a point with shipping. I've noticed that active shippers tend to have a "type" that strangely correlate to something in their lives
(Though, please be aware. Not everyone who has the same ship is going to act or think the same. Everyone has their own reason for liking a certain ship. I just wanted to point this out)
So, what does this have to do with Soriel?
Well, the following post reminded me of another post where a soriel shipper explained that a major reason they loved the ship was because they could relate to both characters. They explained that, in a way, the ship gave them hope for themselves. If two lonely and grief stricken characters could find happiness (and potentially love) in each other, then maybe they could find love.
(Like the previous post: I couldn't find the post that talks about this. If you know who made that post please tell me).
Based off of how well received the original post was; it seemed like a lot of people resonated with OP's statement.
TL;DR: Soriel became a popular ship because a lot of people resonated with the wholesome aspects in their relationship.
And you know what? I'm not complaining! It's an adorable ship that makes me laugh.
(PS: I'm sorry if this post seems jumbled. I just had so much on my mind for this post that I had difficulty putting my thoughts together)(Also, if you don't ship them or you think that it would be impossible for them to get together; that's perfectly ok! I just made this for fun and because I like analyzing stuff).

Humans? Up MY Beanstalk? It's More Likely Than You Think!
AO3 Link
Danny's back on her bullshit and here to make everyone suffer with another WIP that's part of a fic trade with my beloved @hiddendreamer67 <3
Summary: I mean, Jack made it all sound so easy! Climb up the beanstalk a few times, steal enough riches to last himself ten life times, and live happily ever after as a heroic giant slayer with absolutely no repercussions.
Seriously, how hard can it be?
Aiden was no stranger to life events going from bad to worse at the drop of a hat, but more often than not he was able to go with the turbulent flow just enough to keep his head above water and out of any serious trouble. Such a feat was most evident in his adaptation to living within the labyrinth-like walls of the oversized castle he had foolishly sought refuge in weeks prior. Had it been weeks? Months, perhaps, or maybe only a handful of days. The passage of time was just as foreign to him as these massive surroundings, these massive people , and he didn’t have the gall to weasel his way towards an opening near the outside to gauge how high or low the sun was sitting in the strangely pink sky.
The irony was almost funny; where was that fool hearted bravery he had been swimming in when he first started his ascension up the winding stalk that sprouted who knows how many decades ago to reach its impressive height? He knew the stories of young boys trading cows for beans and getting far more than they bargained for. He knew it was down right suicidal to scale the plant in general given he hadn’t a lick of training when it came to climbing anything other than a ladder. The opportunity to live within a legend was too good to pass up, unfortunately. The flimsy promise of riches and adventure beyond his wildest dream outweighed the need to even consider how he was going to get back down from the towering growth when he was inevitably disappointed by the lack of golden eggs.
But he didn’t succumb to the thin air or fall to his death, and he wasn’t disappointed. If anything, he was given everything he envisioned. Almost everything. When he broke through the cloud line, he discovered the vine had tapered off in favor of clinging to a cliff side he was unaware even existed from below. Green tendrils served as almost a ladder to aid his climb up the mysterious rock formation until he was able to pull himself, huffing and panting and muscles tingling from overuse, over the edge to collapse on horizontal land. So the fabled kingdom of riches didn’t actually rest on the clouds, it seemed. A small let down, but hardly anything worth dampening the mood as Aiden took in his new world view.
He felt as if he had switched places with a weevil seeing how the small patch of grass he was in came up to his chest rather than swishing against his ankles. The euphoria of this great new discovery once again drowned out the more rational side of him, favoring exploration over potential survival. The logistics of returning home could be dealt with later, after he had slayed a giant and stolen only a penny of its wealth that would no doubt provide for him for the rest of his life. Naive. Gullible. Fool hearted.
Aiden had only trekked for a few hours before nearly getting swallowed up by a winged beast he likened to a bat, washing away over the edge of the cliff in a stream, and getting trampled by hulking soldiers doing their rounds. Each close call he survived by the skin of his teeth, luck and adrenaline driving him blindly to find a moment of safety. However, with each incident his bravery withered away into trepidation, especially the closer he came to the giants that roamed the lands. None of them had noticed him yet and part of him wondered if they would ever notice something as miniature as him scurrying around, but he wasn’t feeling bold enough to stay out in the open just for their reaction. No, once he had slipped into the fortress of metal and stone, out of sight from any predator's eyes, the will to venture back out had faded into near nothingness.
If he had it his way, he doubted he would ever again have the gung ho to leave the confines of his newfound sanctuary, not even for the bittersweet desire of returning home. He had made his bed in his haste to seek glory out of tall tales and now he must lie in it. Though his heart ached with anxiety and his hands ceased to tremble, his traitorous stomach refused to let him continue a life of solitude amongst the dusty beams. A weaker part of him couldn’t help but wonder if it would be worth it to live with the gnawing pain until it eventually overtook him. A fitting end, would it not, to starve to death like a rat in the walls? Alas, he was weak, but not weak enough to endure such aggressive cramping by the end of the second day, and so he mustered all the strength and courage he could just to snatch a few stale breadcrumbs long forgotten behind what he assumed was a cast iron stove.
Aiden truly was living up to his new rodent lifestyle, wasn’t he.
It was disgusting, but it was food, and though it made him ill the remainder of the night it had at least provided him with enough energy to go back out the next night in an effort to find something an inch more sustainable. By the end of the week, his newly discovered drive to live had him exploring every corner of the expansive kitchen during the wee hours of the night, when no giants hurried back and forth between the counters and the galley to serve platters of meals that could have fed his own village for months at a time. The rich smell of hot breads and meats made him dizzy, even more so now that he was getting accustomed to surviving off of dusty scraps he found on the floor. He needed to play it safe, he reminded himself as he watched one of the chef’s throw out an entire pan of fresh loaves because there’s too many chives in this! It’s too bitter for his tastes! , hardly resisting the urge to dive into the bins after the wasted food.
But...if they were so keen as to throw away an entire batch of fully prepared food over the fact that it was unsuitable for one person’s palette...surely there was no harm in taking what would be considered a nibble. Not when it was unwanted.
There it was again, that fool hearted bravery. If only Aiden had used it to find a way out of this unofficial prisoner rather than fuel his greed. He couldn’t be happy with the bare minimum he was given, could he? Always had to push the boundaries when he knew exactly where they lied, always run headfirst towards danger and then act surprised when it would bite him in the ass moments later. At least this time around he had the forethought to formulate some type of a plan, as flimsy as it was. Having become quite familiar with the inner structures of the fortress, he was able to determine the abode he was in was something along the lines of a castle. It was certainly sprawling enough, decorated with dark colors and glittering riches and constantly bustling with workers ranging from lowly servants to chittering socialites. Whether or not this was indeed a house for royalty he was unsure, having never been able to pinpoint which of the ambling lords or ladies might be the esteemed ruler of the lands. Assuming monarchies even existed this high, that is. Perhaps this was merely the norm of their society’s standards. It was unlikely, but it wasn’t as if he had many outside resources to compare this way of life to, not even in the way of his own village.
In theory, the heist should have been easy. In theory . All he had to do was wait until the dead of night for the bustling kitchen to fall silent as it normally did and he could slip out from the crevice closest to the scraps bin. Scaling in and out of the bin might prove trickier than he anticipated, but that remained a problem for future Aiden. The most important part of his newfound mission was being able to fill his stomach up with day-old bread and cold meats before they were discarded for good. If all went well, this could easily become a nightly routine of his, a way to feast like a king whilst living like a rat within the true royalty’s walls. He knew he was getting ahead of himself with that kind of fantasizing, perhaps that was even the beginning of his downfall, but he had so little to look forward to these days that he dared to get his hopes up for a semi-decent meal.
He hadn’t even made it halfway across the counter before he was spotted and subsequently captured.
But he had been so careful , he lamented to himself when the air was roughly knocked from his lungs after a massive hand slammed on top of him, pinning any squirms. True, he reflected as the stars cleared his vision, he never actually bothered to see if the kitchen remained vacant all night given that he was asleep...but he just assumed! Who in the world would be up during this hour!? Someone else sneaking a snack, maybe, just as he was. He could use that to his advantage, try and gain a few sympathy points by connecting with the giant on that level, convince them that all he needed was just a fraction of whatever they were probably getting for themselves and he would be on his way for good. A lie, of course, but the giant didn’t need to know that.
Once more, that short lived plan would never be put to use when Aiden felt himself being lifted in the air within a bone crushing grip, metal and leather digging into him in various places from the glove the giant wore. His eyes barely adjusted from the dizzying movements and dim kitchen before they were blown open at the sight, constricted breathing still entirely for a heartbeat. This was no ordinary giant, not like the ones he had grown accustomed to glancing at from the nooks and crannies. At first glance, however, it did fit the bill for the most part -- biped, guard’s armor, a human face -- but...did these giants typically have glowing purple eyes? He couldn’t recall for certain, yet the more he looked the more he found that appeared off. The outline of the guard’s figure seemed...fuzzy, like they were blurred rather than a solid defining line. His face, harsh and scrutinizing, was greyer than a corpse. He was otherworldly, and it was at that moment Aiden was painfully reminded he was in another world, one he didn’t belong in. One he knew he would be leaving quickly.
“You shouldn’t be here,” the guard rumbled, his voice grating more like static than a growl.
“N-no…” Aiden agreed. Anything to get on his good side. “I’ll go, I’ll l-leave!”
Though he had found his voice, he had yet to find the strength to attempt any kind of struggle, not that he thought he’d be able to budge the massive fingers in the slightest. However, if he showed just how eager he was to depart from this situation, maybe the giant would believe him and grant him that small mercy. Instead, he was given another rough squeeze that made his spine pop, the fist clenching him raising higher so that he was more at eye level with his captor.
“How did you get in here, human? ” The guard spat. Good news was that humans were a known creature, at least. Bad news was that humans, apparently, were not known for any pleasant reason.
Aiden panted, trying to suck in a much needed breath after all of his were forced out. “I-I don’t know…” He squealed in discomfort when the fingers tightened again, refusing to let up until he gave a more satisfactory answer. “Th-the walls! I came through the walls! ”
The guard snorted and slackened his grip to allow an inch of breathing room, “Of course you did. Little pest that you and your kind are.”
“Wh...what are you…?” A bold question, but since he was sure it was to be one of his last, Aiden saw no reason not to ask.
He wasn’t given an answer, the giant instead lowering him slightly to exit the kitchen and pace down the halls. The scenery whizzed by so fast that it made his head spin, catching a few looks at other giants that were loitering about. Just like the guard, they were similar to the ones he would see in the daytime but...different. The two guards they passed looked to be of the same race of whatever the one holding him was, a noblewoman in a shimmering capelet eyed him suspiciously and he could have sworn her ‘capelet’ flittered before settling back down her shoulders. How had he never seen any of these attributes in the day? Then again, he often viewed the giants in the fortress at a distance and never for very long, they could have all been magically endowed for all he knew. Or, another theory, the ones he was coming across now were merely nocturnal and their more...normal housemates were sound asleep as he typically was while these creatures did their rounds and had their fun.
The wonderment was short lived when the giant shoved his way through a heavy wooden door at the very end of a lesser used corridor. With each step down the spiraling stone staircase, Aiden felt his heart sink just a little lower. The long shadows casting against the walls from the torches mounted to them gave the dank atmosphere an even more sinister vibe, leaving too many unknown things able to hide in the darkness. Even the guard, who did not appear to be an overly friendly fellow to begin with, looked twice as menacing with how the shadows concealed the few human features he did have. Aiden swallowed thickly, unsure of where they were heading but already knowing it wasn’t good.
His hunch was confirmed when the guard entered another hall, one lined with cramped cells that were partially occupied. He tried not to look at them and their fates, not wanting to see what might be awaiting him as well. Likely not, though. He was far too small to shackle and imprison. A different punishment would have to be in store for him. Further down the hall, the dungeon changed its holding cells from ones with iron bars to ones with solid steel doors instead, obscuring whatever poor bastard was locked within. Was that considered a crueler punishment? Perhaps that was where the torturing took place, if such types of creatures indulged in those acts. He saw no reason why they wouldn’t and as a result could very easily imagine himself being thrown in there next.
Fortunately, or not, the guard instead opened another wooden door that was adjacent to several of the isolated cells, coming to stand before another giant sitting at a table. Aiden couldn’t tell what was on the desk or what this new giant was using these unknown things for, but from the jist of it he must have been busy.
“Sir,” the guard holding him said while raising him higher for the presumably important one to see better. “A human has been found within the perimeter.”
The guard, a captain if Aiden were to guess, frowned. “Any others?”
“None that I could sense in the immediate area.”
He sighed and waved his hand. “We’ll do a sweep before daybreak. Who knows the amount of damage it’s done...what it’s taken, what it’s told.” He fixed Aiden with an icy glare that made the poor human try to shrink in on himself.
He wished he could have found a way to defend himself, plead his case, but his voice was nowhere to be found now. All cowardliness and no self preservation.
“And how shall I dispose of this one, sir?” The guard asked and Aiden paled. Dispose!?
The one in charge shrugged a shoulder and resumed what he was doing previously, fiddling with tools and books and papers for one reason or another. “Put it on lunch duty. Give the lizard another rat to keep him busy.”
Aiden didn’t quite follow the logic of the order. Lunch duty didn’t sound half as bad as being disposed of. The ‘lizard’ was news to him, but regardless the guard nodded at his order and left the office back down the corridor of steel doors. He wasn’t sure if he should speak up and ask for clarification while he mulled over his rather lenient sentencing, doubtful the giant would even regard him. From the looks of disgust and distrust he had been given numerous times in the short span of time he had been discovered, he could gather that his presence was an unwelcome one, though why he was still unsure. Evidently, he was going to be put to work and he could most certainly live with that. Earn his keep, he reasoned. Give rats to lizards or something. Would these rats and lizards be the same kind as the ones back on his homeworld down below or would they be to scale with the giants? Another question he should probably speak aloud before he got in over his head.
Or, at least, he would have asked, had a wad of cloth not been jammed into mouth hard enough to make his jaw click uncomfortably. He gagged, trying to shove the offending material out with his tongue, but it was packed into his cheeks too tightly to budge. A different material, a thin rope, was quickly wound around his chest to pin his arms to his sides before wrapping further down to bind his ankles. It had happened in the flash, the guard giving him no warning or reasoning for the sudden confinement, but it wasn’t as if Aiden could offer up much protest now that it was all said and done. He was completely immobile, spun up like a fly in a spider’s web. The guard had done it with such efficiency that it must be something similar to a routine for him by now which did not bode well. In a last ditch effort to save his hide from whatever...this was, he looked up at his captor with wide, pleading eyes, begging for just a shred of sympathy or at the very least an explanation of what was about to happen.
All he was met with was the same cold, violet eyes as all the other giants he had come to pass. Equally cruel and indifferent. And it was then he understood, as he was being roughly shoved through a hand slot at the base of one of the sturdy metal cell doors, that he was not the one who was meant to be delivering the meals during “lunch duty”. He was the meal. He was the rat, which meant the lizard was…
Aiden wriggled as best he could manage in his position until he was able to roll onto his back and get a good look around the cell. It was massive to him, but compared to the size of the giants he could tell it was rather cramped. Dark and depressing, much like one would expect a lonely prison cell to be, with the scattering of tiny bones and grime along the stone walls. His breathing quickened as he tried to tell just what type of origin the gnawed remains had been, however it was too difficult to tell at this distance in such gloom lighting. Perhaps that was for the best, giving his brain a little boost of reassurance that maybe they weren’t all human bones, that this wasn’t a common fate most of his kind befell when they made the same foolish mistake of invading where they clearly did not belong.
Trying to avoid the glare of bones only worsened his situation tenfold when he turned his head and was met with what was, obviously, the lizard as previously mentioned. Well, partially a lizard? More human-looking than lizard just going off a quick glance which led Aiden to believe the nickname was meant to be a derogatory term for whatever species it was. It...he? Yeah, he was kneeling on the floor, not by choice, but rather due to the shackles that bound him at the wrist and was tethered to the floor with a pitifully short chain. The clothes he wore reminded him of something he might have caught a few nobles wear given the level of craftsmanship and hand woven designs. It was a shame they were soiled now in what he could only assume was sweat and dirt, how he hoped that was dirt. The prisoner picked his head up when he heard the food slot screech open and shut, waiting for any other sound before sighing at the responding silence.
The chain jingled as he shifted to reposition himself into something a little more comfortable, Aiden now catching sight of the black nails that blended into scales littering the back of his hand when he flexed his fingers. A tail briefly flicked into view before concealing itself behind him once again. As the human let his gaze trail further up his face, fully prepared to see another hateful glare burning a hole through his weak soul, he couldn’t help but notice another spattering of black scales along his cheekbones and down his neck, presumably up to his eyes as well, but...well, he couldn’t tell. Not when there was a tattered, red cloth tied around his head, effectively blinding the sense. He wondered if this was an ailment the giant already had or if this was another part of his punishment, curious if he even had any eyes still in their sockets beneath the shoddy wrappings. Whatever the case was, the “lizard” obviously couldn’t see him and Aiden was unable to alert him to his presence with the gag shoved down his throat, leaving them at an awkward stalemate.
A stalemate that lasted all of two seconds before the giant wrinkled his nose and frowned. “The hell kind of rodent is this…? ” he muttered to himself.
So much for not knowing he was there. With great effort, Aiden twisted his body until he was able to turn on his side, trying to push himself up into a sitting position. He froze when the giant started to move as well, pointed ears twitching in response to the light scuffling he was making against the floor to pinpoint his location. Despite one of his senses being dulled, it was evident his remaining ones were still working in perfect order, maybe even heightened to compensate for the lack of vision.
“Another live one,” he sighed, fingers flexing again, “Sorry about this little buddy. I don’t like live prey any more than you like being it, I’m sure, but, well…”
That was the only warning Aiden had before the giant lunged, teeth snapping an inch in front of his frozen body. From this close, he could see the needle-thin fangs previously hidden behind a grimace and instantly wanted to be far, far away from them. His only saving grace was the short lead the other had on his cuffs, preventing him from pushing off any closer and cutting him off just shy of his prize for the time being. He growled in annoyance at having missed the offered prey, pulling back to realign himself for a better pounce.
“Come on, just make this easy for the both of us,” the giant huffed.
Oh, absolutely not. No, no, no. No, this was not how Aiden wanted his adventure in the skies to end. Fuck the adventure, he wanted to go home and he wanted to do so alive and in one piece. Being ripped to shreds was not a fate he ever envisioned for himself. He wasn’t going to die like some...some rat!
The giant was inching closer, moving along the side as much as the chain would allow to get a better angle. It didn’t matter whether he ensnared the tiny between his claws or teeth or even batted its little corpse within reaching distance with his tail, so long as he was able to get a hold on its fresh flesh one way or another. Desperately, Aiden began to rock back and forth to shimmy his body across the floor, painstakingly putting centimeters of distance between them that the giant was able to make up in a single shuffle. When the chain pulled taunt again, the human rolled to the side and narrowly missed the clamp of teeth once more, hot breath blowing against his back and covering his body in goosebumps. Undeterred, however, the giant followed his scent that was so tantalizingly close and moved his body in unison with Aiden’s. With another bite, he was able to find purchase on the ropes that burned against his arms and sunk his fangs in what he supposed was meant to be an animal's tender flesh.
Aiden had tried to avoid the attack but simply could not scramble away quick enough, his only luck being that he was just far enough that the gnashing teeth only managed to puncture through the fibers of rope rather than his actual skin. He was lifted into the air when the giant pulled back, kicking and thrashing to the best of his ability against the hold. The humid air blowing on the back of his head made him nauseous now, only able to envision how the feeling would quickly be enveloping him entirely when he was thrown back and swallowed down the creature’s gullet. With one, final twist, Aiden prayed his limited strength would be enough to somehow dislodge himself from the giant’s maw and give him another chance at playing this unbalanced game of chase.
And then the rope snapped.
Having already been sawed and frayed in several places from the giant’s fangs, Aiden’s pull was all it needed to rip apart entirely, sending the human sprawling onto the cold ground. His vision clouded when his head smacked against the stone, ironically thankful for the wad of cloth in his mouth or he most certainly would have lost a few teeth. Without a doubt, he was going to have a nasty bruise coloring the majority of his right side in the near future, the ache still pulsing with every wheezing breath he tried to gain back. While the stars faded from his eyes, he watched distantly as the giant curiously grinded the material in his mouth before dropping it. He pursed his lips in confusion, expecting raw meat and the rush of blood rather than some scratchy coils of what almost tasted like hide.
“Gods, what even is this,” he cringed.
Me , Aiden wanted to cry out, it’s me, it’s a human!
The giant’s hang up with his unusual meal faded into resignation much sooner than Aiden would have liked. He was hardly to blame, though, if he had been given nothing but live pests to blindly hunt down without the use of his full mobility for an undetermined amount of time. They were in a similar boat, really. Creatures trapped in a home they had no business being in, trying to survive on what little scraps were thrown their way. The human sorely wished he hadn’t been relegated into the scraps category, but there was little he could do about that now. Knowing his prey had a pretty straight forward drop, he moved again with an open mouth to seal the foreign creature’s fate.
The sight of teeth rushing to greet him was exactly the adrenaline rush Aiden’s body needed to get moving again, much more successfully this time now that he had arms to push up with and legs to carry him a greater distance. As much as he would have loved to have sprinted to the other side of the cell, even find another crack to slip through if fate would feel the desire to be so kind to him today, he only managed to stumble a few feet out of the immediate danger zone before tripping over himself. His right leg screamed in agony from the second fall, a sign of something being sprained somewhere he was sure. He wanted to scream out loud as well had it not been for the gag. The gag he realized he could take out now. Unsure of how useful his last words would even be, the human ripped the wad of cloth out of his mouth in a frenzy while the giant prepped himself for another attack. If anything, at least Aiden could find catharsis in leaving some sort of statement about himself behind for someone to hear, even if it was just confirmation of his fool heartedness.
“Stop!” Aiden yelled, voice raw and itching his throat like it hadn’t been used in ages rather than half an hour. “Please, stop! G-get away! ”
He wasn’t sure what he was expecting the giant to do as a result, but one thing was clear and it was that he most certainly wasn’t expecting his meal to say anything. He reeled back like he had been physically struck by those words, if his eyes were visible he was sure they would be as wide as serving platters. It was almost comical how he stumbled back, the menacing creature suddenly so fearful of a tiny vermin it was trying to consume moments prior, mouth agape as he tried to process what was going on without being able to actually see it.
“You...did you just, oh my gods,” he gasped. While he was glad he was being spared for the time being, the giant’s nervousness did little to quell the anxiety that had been brewing in Aiden’s heart since the moment he came upon this accursed land.
“Ple-please…” Aiden whimpered, suddenly drained physically and emotionally from the whole ordeal and settling to just drag himself any extra distance he could away from his unofficial death penalty. It was a pathetic display, but on the bright side, one he wouldn’t be mocked for. “Don’t h-hurt me…”
The giant shifted again, hesitant, closer , and Aiden braced himself for the final bite to end it all.
“You can talk!? ”

I’m a big believer that Dick’s independence and self-reliance isn’t in any way rooted in him just being stubborn, prideful or self-destructive. I view it as being in his eyes a necessity….because on a deep, fundamental level….Dick doesn’t trust anything to be permanent.
I’ll always go back to the fact that his character archetype isn’t that of the everyman, because he was of lower class origins compared to Bruce’s extreme upper class background.....but rather that given that Dick Grayson was allegedly exceptional from his debut, a child prodigy capable of feats of acrobatics few in the world could match....he could never actually be classified as an everyman. Rather, his core archetype is that of the fish out of water. The individual taken from the comforts of his original pond and thrust into a limelight of an entirely different nature from the one he grew up in, with the two not at all being interchangeable, and necessitating he change and adapt in dramatic and often unanticipated ways just to keep his footing in his new environs.
Its not incidental that his initial tragedy wasn’t JUST the loss of his parents, but rather the loss of his old routines, extended family, environment, way of life, expectations for the way his future would play out....it ALL vanished on the same night, never to return again. The loss of his parents was tragedy enough all on its own, but its really only one part of what Dick lost that night. He lost his entire footing. His frames of reference. Everything his life had previously prepared him for and everything he could have used as a familiar comfort or source of stability to lean on, if it had been ‘just’ his parents that he lost.
And I fundamentally don’t believe you ever get over THAT loss, no matter what peace you make with the loss of your loved ones or specific elements of that. Once you’ve experienced a shake-up of that size, once you have a bone-deep, visceral awareness of how completely your life can change in the blink of an eye, how you can effectively be set back to zero as though nothing you’ve previously accomplished matters (remember, he went from a kid whose name drew crowds on its OWN merits, based on what HE was capable of due to his own work and skills, the youngest of the Flying Graysons, capable of an acrobatic feat barely anyone else in the world could master......to being a kid who was only ever identified as in the context of Bruce Wayne having taken him in, as though his existence and worth were defined by someone else’s act of compassion rather than based on anything he’d ever done on his own, when the fact of the matter is even by age eight, he’d already accomplished a LOT)....
Like, the point is, you can’t go through a shake-up like that and ever fully FORGET how complete and total a change it was, how big a rewrite of your entire life story.
That’s a trauma all its own, one that goes largely unacknowledged, and one that I don’t think Bruce and Alfred or anyone else fully realized was even there TO need addressing in the first place. So of course how could they ever fully address it, without realizing a need?
And I think Dick’s constant moves and self-reliance are actually born of that primal awareness that there are no guarantees, that nothing is truly permanent, that anything can be taken away in an instant.
He’s always waiting for the other shoe to drop, for everything to be taken away again - as people have pointed out in other posts, Dick can never seem to have nice things. Even the apartment building he lived in while in Bludhaven….that wasn’t some height of luxury by ANY stretch of the imagination…was lost to him, along with all the friends and neighbors and community he’d built among them, something evidenced by how highly they all spoke of him, even to a total stranger. And that’s not even getting into how even the CITY he sought to establish himself as a guardian over, like, he lost the city itself. The CITY!
Dick, I believe, insists on holding down 9-5 jobs and paying his own way and only touching money that comes from Bruce originally, when like…he has no other option or its to help someone else….just like he’s resistant to ever fully putting down roots, at least none so deep that he can’t uproot himself and quickly relocate without ripping off a piece of himself and leaving it still buried in the ground behind him.
Because deep down, he’s always bracing for the next seismic event that’ll rip everything away from him, and he wants to be prepared. He WANTS to make sure he never takes anything for granted. That if he loses it all - hell, if he and Bruce fight again and Bruce decides once and for all to take it all away from Dick, cut their ties, something that would very much be a deep-rooted insecurity for a kid with as massive of abandonment issues as Dick must have given his childhood and a number of events after that…
Dick I think needs to trust that he’ll be capable of surviving, of standing on his own two feet, if the worst should ever happen again and he’s left on his own again. His self-reliance and obsessive need for independence aren’t a REJECTION of anyone else or anything Bruce or others have ever done for him.
They’re simply the defense mechanisms of a boy who was once upon a time torn away from everything he knew and in certain origins was then on top of that plunged into hellish circumstances before finding a refuge with Bruce….
And the man that boy grew up to be, who is determined to never be caught in a situation like that again, where his very survival might otherwise require the kindness of a stranger….with Dick knowing better than to count on lightning striking twice there, and him getting lucky a second time.
So in a lot of ways, my core perception of Dick having spent more time growing up in the luxury of Wayne Manor than any of the other kids is that its largely irrelevant to who he grew up to be. Because he was still more than old enough by the time he arrived that he had formative experiences all his own that no amount of time was sufficient to overwrite and exchange for new ones.
His experiences are so extreme in terms of the loss of all forms of stability, that the SHAPE that stability takes in the periods where his life IS stable, is largely unimportant. Because its the absence of stability that’s the defining recurrence in his life. Even the stability offered by his childhood in Wayne Manor eventually gave way to canon where he left the Manor before he was even eighteen, as well as canon where no matter how it was ultimately reversed, he was for a time affected by having the ability to call the Manor his home STRIPPED AWAY FROM HIM. Thus even when Bruce did ultimately welcome him back, there still retained an awareness that even the fact that this had happened in the first place was a reminder that even THIS was something Dick could lose, that no matter how stable his childhood there had been at times, it couldn’t in and of itself be COUNTED as a source of stability due to the simple fact that his ability to call it his home HADN’T turned out to be an irrevocable constant.
And so this is another of those areas where I think its fundamentally an oversight to have members of the family commenting on Dick’s self-reliance or tendencies to relocate himself, let alone in any kind of critical capacity......
If there’s not going to be an acknowledgment within the family or by the people raising these criticisms like, what kind of a role the family themselves have played in Dick feeling a NEED to have these tendencies in the first place.
If someone doesn’t trust in any place he lives in to ever truly be a constant in his life, truly permanent, that anything can be taken away in the right circumstances....and you yourself have done something that has made him feel or given him reason TO leave a place he’s found stability in at some point in the past....you kiiiiiinda forsake your right to be critical of his inability to see any place as permanent or constant, y’know?
Like, insert Miranda Whatshername gif or Meryl Streep peering down her glasses and going oh I see, you think this has nothing to do with you.
So I’d argue that Dick’s insistence on simulating the average person’s reality of livelihood, even when he has other means and funds available to him….just as his insistence on being as solely responsible for the well-being of the place or people he sees as his responsibilities, being single-minded about relying only on himself for tasks that he sees as ultimately having nothing to do with someone other than himself, etc....
All that is in my opinion BECAUSE he’s so firmly attached to the reality that anything and everything can be taken away, at ANY given moment. That he can be reduced to having nothing and no one he can depend on BEYOND just his own innate skills and experiences, the only things he trusts to be truly unable to be stripped from him by others.
If you ask me, one of the core aspects of Dick’s characterization throughout his adulthood in canon is SPECIFICALLY his fear that everything he cares about, or trusts, or relies on…can be taken away from him or lost.
And his determination to make sure that he’ll be able to survive even if that should ever happen again.

summary: Jungkook isn’t usually a risk taker-- in fact, he’s the safest guy in the room. But you’re about to change that
Jungkook adjusts his tie and looks out of the little airplane window. The seatbelt sign is blinking back on – it’s been a relatively exhausting flight from LA to New York and his legs are numb. He eyes the tall buildings of the metropolis below, squinting when he can see the Empire State building in his view. It isn’t his first time in Manhattan, having visited once with his family when he was a teenager. The sheer size of the place terrifies him a little though.
It’s not like Los Angeles isn’t a big city. LA is huge, in fact, and just as saturated as any big city is. But New York is a different topic altogether. Jungkook finds LA intimidating, he’s not sure where to even start with Manhattan.
He walks out into JFK, hoisting his duffle bag on one shoulder. It’s noisy, he notes, as soon as he’s walked out and into baggage claim. He only makes a small pitstop in the men’s bathroom to make sure his hair doesn’t look like birds have nested in it and emerges out, looking around. Someone’s supposed to be picking him up, and they should be here, amongst the throng of people holding up placards with names on them. He’s just pulling out his phone to double check if any emails about his pickup were sent while he was in flight, when a commotion by baggage claim catches his eye. Raising his eyebrows, he takes in the sight before him.
There’s you, hair coming out of your bun, clutching your stilettos close to your chest as you walk barefoot on the baggage belt wearing a crinkled skirt-suit. You’re looking for something, tip toeing around the suitcases, unaware of the stares you’re getting. You’re walking towards him, against the direction of the belt and he stares around him and sees a piece of paper with the name JEON JUNGKOOK written on it in bright red lipstick. He leans over to pick it up, and realizes you’ve made a grab for it as well.
“That’s me,” he says. You blink at him in confusion, before your face clears.
“Jeon Jungkook?” you affirm, and he nods, pointing to the piece of paper and then at himself.  “Oh, thank god.” You introduce yourself and hold out your hand, which Jungkook promptly shakes. You’re still on the baggage belt, so he has to walk alongside you.
“You’re picking me up from the airport?”
“Yes!” your voice is hushed and out of breath. You smooth down your flyaway hair hastily.
“Do you… always pick people up like this?” He gestures at the baggage belt and you suddenly laugh, a high tinkling sound. Jumping off the belt, you stand in front of him.
“Uh yeah, you know, I like to keep things interesting,” you say, nodding your head like you mean business. “Welcome to New York, by the way. I feel like I should’ve brought a boombox with that Taylor Swift song blasting on it.”
“I mean there’s always next time, right?” Jungkook cracks a smile, shoving his hands in the pockets of his suit. “You know… you’re not exactly what comes to mind when one thinks ‘headhunter’.”
“Yeah, I prefer the term executive recruiter,” you say offhandedly. “‘Headhunter’ always makes me sound a little creepy.”
“Well,” Jungkook says, as he watches you put your heels back on. They add a significant amount to your height, and you stand in front of him expectantly. “You did stalk me for the past six months. That’s kind of creepy.” You laugh again at that and reach for his bag, which he pulls out of the way.
“Let me carry your bag, it’s my job!”
“You don’t look like you do this often,” he points out.
“Okay so maybe you’re my first recruit, sue me.” You’re pouting faintly, as the two of you walk out of the airport. The New York heat hits Jungkook all at once, and he sniffs the air curiously. “Nasty isn’t it? I love it” you grin.
“What is that?” he asks, wrinkling his nose.
“Sewage, rats, and the sweet smell of capitalism.” You’re waving down a yellow taxi. “Need me to play you that Taylor Swift song yet?” You hold the door open for him and he gets in and you pop in from the other side. Once you’re done giving the driver your destination, you sit back. “So.” You start. Jungkook raises your eyebrows at you. “You’re finally here!”
“Only took six months worth of emails to convince me,” he says, looking out the window as the cab crosses a bridge. Manhattan looms in front of him.
“It’s a huge opportunity,” you say, and he has to give you points for being earnest. “Art director for Vogue? This is the big leagues!” You’re turned in your seat to look over at him. “I mean, no offence to your little internet blog.”
“Which got seven million hits last month,” He points out, only a little offended. You roll your eyes.
“Have you been on TikTok lately, little kids are pulling those numbers.” You say, and he can’t deny it. “But I’ve seen your work firsthand, and you’re amazing at what you do. That’s why you’re here.” Jungkook sighs. The cab is in Manhattan now and he stares out the window once again.
“There must be a reason you’re here,” you continue quietly. “Even I was surprised you finally agreed to give the interview a shot.” Jungkook doesn’t look at you. He doesn’t know you enough to tell you the real reason he up and left his life in LA.
“A free trip to New York? C’mon I’d be an idiot to turn that down!” He says instead, making his tone as light as possible. “But New York’s so crowded. Look around! I’m from California okay? I prefer the coast.” You’re looking at him, and he has a feeling you can see right through him. Considering New York also has the ocean, even Jungkook knows that is the poorest excuse.
“C’mon, what’s really holding you back?” Your tone is serious. Jungkook shrugs.
“I don’t know. This is a ridiculously huge move. I’ve lived in one place my whole life. And I don’t want it to feel like I made the wrong move and got myself into something I can’t handle.”
“I’m telling you, your work is incredible,” you say again, and Jungkook feels the back of his neck go warm. He’s heard flattery before, but you’re a stranger and you sound so blatantly honest. “You’re fully capable of handling this. Look, we’ll get you some coffee before your interview, you’ll be fine.”
“I don’t drink coffee,” Jungkook mumbles, lowering himself in his seat. You stare.
“What?! You heathen.” You’ve dropped all formalities with him, and Jungkook doesn’t know if that’s just New York, or you.
“It’s really hot,” he says as the cab pulls up to the destination.
“Doesn’t it get hot in LA?” you ask, paying the driver. Jungkook stands on the sidewalk and looks around. He can see the river from where he stands and smell the ocean. That thought comforts him a little.
“Yeah it gets hot in LA, but here it’s the heat, the pollution the humidity. In LA, thirty degrees feels like thirty degrees. Here thirty degrees feels like—the ninth circle of hell—”
“This conversation about the weather is really fascinating, believe me,” you cut him off. “But lucky for me, we’re here.” You point at the large building the two of you are standing outside of. “So, good luck.” Jungkook looks up at the skyscraper.
“Whatever happens, happens,” He says, shaking his head. “I told you, I don’t really want it.”
“I think you do,” you say, crossing your arms slightly. “Whatever it was that convinced you to finally fly out here is also convincing you to go for it. But regardless, just do me a favour? Act like you do want it so that I look good.”
“I guess I can do that,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his neck.
“Okay”, you say, flashing him another one of your blinding smiles. “Go get ‘em.”

It’s past three in the afternoon by the time Jungkook walks out of the building’s shiny revolving doors.
“Hey!” you’re running towards him, still wearing the same clothes from this morning. Your hair is down though, Jungkook notes.
“You’re still here,” he’s surprised, and partly impressed by your ethic.
“Yeah, well,” you say, sounding sheepish. “It’s my job. How did it go?” Jungkook allows himself a small grin.
“They bought it,” he says, giving you two thumbs up. “You’re safe for a little while longer.” You clap your hands excitedly.
“Well thank you,” you offer him a little curtsy that has him laughing. “I owe you one Jeon.” At that moment, his phone buzzes in his back pocket and he reaches for it, while you cross your arms and wait.
“Uh,” he says, reading the notification. “It’s from you.”
“It’s your offer,” you say, tilting your chin at his phone.
“Wait,” he says, confusion evident on his face. “I got the job?” You’re smiling now.
“They called about five minutes ago,” Your smile widens. “Congratulations! The offer expires at midnight.” Jungkook holds up his phone.
“Why didn’t you just tell me instead of texting me?”
“‘Cause it’s more dramatic,” you state, as if it’s obvious. Jungkook scoffs and looks away, towards the river, running a hand through his hair. You roll your eyes.
“Jungkook, you’re not gonna screw this up,” you say.
“It’s a huge move,” Jungkook argues. “Would you uproot your entire life for a job? Be honest.”
“Well, no. For a job, probably not. But for New York? Yeah, I would. Which is why I’m not gonna sell you on the job, I’m gonna sell you on New York.”
“It’s New York!” Jungkook says, exasperation leaking into his voice. “I’ve seen Iron Man, I know what it’s like!”
“Not the bullshit tourist version,” you say, looking at him, that slight pout back in your face.
“Puppy dog eyes? Really?” He questions, defeat evident in his voice. You laugh.
“C’mon,” You say grinning. “Let me buy you a drink.” You’re walking away from him and crossing the street when you realize Jungkook isn’t following. “What’re you waiting for?”
“For the light to turn so I can cross the street,” he says pointing at the red hand glaring across from him. You scoff and march back up to him.
“You Cali folk are so cute,” Linking your arm with his, you lead him onto the street. “C’mon it’s fine.”
“No, it’s really not,” Jungkook argues, watching a cab nearly run the two of you over, but you expertly dodge it. “See? I’m gonna die.” You lead him down Park Row, your arm warm against his and Jungkook finds himself at the Brooklyn bridge.
“What’re we—” he starts, but you ignore him, dragging him to the foot of Brooklyn Bridge. Cars are rushing past them, commuters going home after a day of work. Pedestrians are walking along the sidewalk, admiring East River below. You walk up to a small woman sitting on the side of the sidewalk in front of some mangoes.
“Maria!” you exclaim, followed by sentences in a language Jungkook barely recognizes as Spanish. The woman looks up in recognition and smiles at you. You fish through your wallet for a few dollar bills before handing them to her. You’re still speaking in Spanish as you point at Jungkook and then at yourself. The woman nods and begins to bag up the sliced mangoes.
“You’re feeding me mangoes off the street?” Jungkook whispers.
“What? I thought you LA folk were all about that organic, local bullshit,” you retort. You graciously take the bagged slices from the woman and wave at her before pulling Jungkook back in the direction of Manhattan.
“Do I at least get to eat them?” He asks.
“Not yet!” you reply cheerfully. You usher him into the Fulton Street Subway station, even let him use your Metro Card. Jungkook is too winded to ask any more questions as you practically push him onto a train. Two stops later, you’re getting off, Jungkook trying to keep up with you.
“Battery Park!” You wiggle your fingers. Jungkook stares around. “This is where you come if you wanna take those super expensive tours to the Statue of Liberty by the way,”
“Good to know,” he laughs. You walk him in the direction of the water but away from the ferries. It’s a promenade, he realizes. The two of you walk until you arrive at what he recognizes as a World War II memorial. You walk towards it and sit down on the slabs of concrete next to the steps, your feet dangling off as you stare at the ocean in front of you. You pat the space next to you and Jungkook throws the thoughts of getting his one good suit dirty and joins you. You promptly hand him the bag of mangoes.
“I thought we were going for a drink,” he jokes. You laugh as you pop open the bag. He stares down at his own. “What did that woman do to my mangoes?”
“She puts cayenne salt on them,” you say, popping a cube into your mouth. Jungkook raises his eyebrows and experimentally puts a piece in his mouth.
“Oh my god,” he says, voice coming out in a moan. “This is amazing”
“Right?” you laugh. “Maria is a culinary genius.” Your legs swing as the air gets cooler. The two of you watch the ferries in silence, but its comfortable. Jungkook breathes in the salty air.
“Do you do this often?”
“When I need to clear my head, I come here to watch the sunsets,” you say. “The crowd dies down by then because the only tourists that come here are here for Liberty and the ferries stop around this time.” There is another minute of silence and then – “You know, Jungkook, I like you.”
“Thanks.”
“That’s why, I’ll give you your choice of closes.”
“What?” Jungkook is confused again, a state he finds he’s often in wherever you seem to be involved.
“How I close you on this job.”
“Oh.”
“So, we got the flattery close,” you start, and put on a sweet, simpering voice. “Jungkook, you are so good at what you do!” Jungkook is laughing, but you carry on. “The take-it-or-leave-it close – Man I don’t care if you take it, I get paid regardless!” Jungkook is trying to interrupt but you reel right on. “The sympathy close,” suddenly your voice is hitched, and you pretend to bat away unshed tears. “You see, my liver is failing—”
“Why do women think the only way to get a man to do what they want is to manipulate him?” Jungkook finally manages to interrupt your rant and his voice comes out harsher than he expected it to. You blink at him, a look of understanding flashing across your face and Jungkook clamps his mouth shut.
“History,” you reply, choosing not to pry, for which Jungkook is grateful. “Personal experiences. Romantic comedies.” You look out towards the ocean again. A sailing boat is crossing your line of sight as you speak. “C’mon, you’re here for a reason, whether you want to admit it or not.”
“Yeah,” Jungkook says, biting into another slice of mango. “To explore an option. Who wouldn’t want to know their options?”
“Someone who’s in a perfect situation,” you counter.
“Are you in a perfect situation?” He throws your words right back at you.
“Job? Oh, absolutely.” You say. “Everything else? Well, that’s none of your business,” Jungkook chuckles, and you smile. The wind ruffles your hair as you lean back. You watch as he finishes the remainder of his mango. “Ready to go?”
“But we just got here!”
“Chop Chop my friend, New York waits for no one.” Jungkook groans, deciding that you’re just impossible to keep up with.

“Central Park? Really? I thought we weren’t doing the bullshit tourist stuff.” Jungkook is holding a cup of boba in his hand – rose black tea with lychee jelly. The two of you had picked some up on the way to the park. When you’d said drinks, this wasn’t what he’d had in mind, but he wasn’t complaining. You take a giant sip of your own milk tea with pearls.
“You do realize Central Park is huge, right? There are corners of this place tourists tend to not venture into.”
The two of you are near the upper end of the park. The city is more residential here, almost into South Harlem. You tell him it’s the North Meadow. You find small curving paths in the park and the two of you walk around. Jungkook has to admit, it doesn’t feel like he’s currently in the world’s noisiest city.
“Here’s the countryside and peace you were craving for,” you say cheekily, and he laughs. But the air smells cool and fresh, the smell of exhaust and the sound of cars only a faraway tune.
“Okay fine, this wasn’t on TV,” he admits, and you grin. The two of you manage to find a spot in a clearing on a slight hill next to a huge oak tree and make yourselves comfortable on the grass. You pop open the slices of cake you’d picked up at the boba place and dig a fork in them, motioning Jungkook to do the same.
“So, what’s your dad think about all this?” you ask casually and Jungkook stares at you in disbelief. “What? He must have an opinion! He’s famous – he was the brand marketing director for GQ for 23 years.” Jungkook is surprised, to say the least.
“Wow, somebody did their homework.”
“Oh yeah,” you agree. “I have this thing at work. It’s called, uh, Google.” You ignore Jungkook’s scoff. “C’mon, what did he say about the job?”
“Actually, I haven’t asked him.” Jungkook confesses. You don’t need to know that he hasn’t seen or spoken to his father for almost a decade now.
“Well, then, you must know what he’d say,” You counter, waiting patiently for Jungkook to answer.
“He’d tell me to go with my gut,” Jungkook says at last. “And that he’d be proud of me no matter what I did.” If you can sense the shift in his tone, you don’t call him out on it. He’s realizing that you’re more perceptive of your surroundings than he originally gave you credit for.
“Well, he sounds like a really great man.” Your voice is soft and Jungkook doesn’t need to look at you to hear the smile in your voice.
“Yeah, he is.” Jungkook says softly. He doesn’t know if its because you sense the tension, but you stuff the remainder of the cake in your mouth.
“Hey, do you wanna see something really cool?”
“I always want to see something really cool,” Jungkook says easily. He watches you as you lie down on the grass.
“C’mon!” you tell him, and at this point Jungkook knows better than to argue. His suit is ruined anyway. The two of you lie down side-by-side to look up at the sky.
“One of the only places in the city you can actually see a clear night sky,” you point out. “And you know the best part? Very poor cell reception.”
“You bring all your recruits here?”
“I told you, Jeon, you’re my first.”
“Wow.” Jungkook says. “Thanks.”
“But if you tell anyone about this, I will rip your ears off and staple them to your neck.” You continue, in the same, airy tone.
“I believe you,” Jungkook says in a small voice. You sit up next to him. Your hair is frazzled from lying down and your black pencil skirt has grass all over the behind, but you don’t seem to notice or care.
“Oh, it’s time,” you say, checking your watch.
“Time for what?” Jungkook asks, but he hears it as soon as the question leaves his mouth. Soft music reaches his ears from faraway.
“Those tourist spots always have live musicians in the evening.” You say, hugging your knees and resting your chin on them. “But I don’t like the crowds, so I come up here to listen. Nobody for miles – just you and the music.” Jungkook watches you, as your eyes shine, and you stare into the distance.
“Now this is pretty damn cool,” he says. You’re swaying to the music without realizing it and Jungkook watches you tap your foot along to the beat.
“It’s nice to feel like you’re a part of something, right?” you say. “New York can get a little lonely sometimes.”
“And you’re trying to sell me on it.” Jungkook jokes. You laugh, that high tinkling sound Jungkook has come to associate with you after today.
“Every place can be a bit lonely sometimes,” you correct yourself softly. Jungkook thinks the two of you might be more similar than he’d originally thought. He makes a split-second decision.
“I’m in.” he says.
“What?”
“You sold me.”
“Really?” Your eyes are still shining, but you’re looking at him now.
“I’ll take the job,” he laughs. You squeal, still swaying slightly to the music.
“Oh my god!” you grin. “You are so gonna crush it,” And in that moment, surrounded by nothing but the smell of strawberry cake, faraway guitars, and your windswept hair covered in grass, Jungkook really believes you might be right.

Jungkook finally feels like he’s finished moving into his new apartment. Despite being a twenty-something, he never realized that he didn’t actually own that much stuff, and moving states had taken less than a month. Jungkook had other, more pressing matters to worry about – like quitting his previous job, training his replacement, signing a new lease, and bidding farewell to his rather scary old landlady in LA. Jungkook couldn’t say he was very sorry to leave her.
His apartment in Upper West Side Manhattan is miles better than the cramped place he had called home for the past five years. Vogue really had gone all out fixing him up with a place. Jungkook’s favorite feature are the giant floor to ceiling windows that overlook the city. He finds he can get used to this.
He was here now, on the first day at his new job, trying not to sweat through his cream dress shirt. His new team is unfamiliar to him and Jungkook isn’t an extrovert by nature, but he ignores his sweaty palms and tries to play nice.
“So, all I ask is that you give me a little bit of time to gain your trust,” he says, reciting the little speech he’d practiced on the flight a month ago. “I know that I’m new at this, but what I lack in experience, I make up for in cliches.” He gets a few scattered laughs out of that lame gag and sighs internally. “My door’s always open,” he adds. “Literally.” He gestures wildly to his office wall that’s made entirely out of glass, putting him on view to the rest of his team sitting in cubicles outside. “Thanks guys.”
There’s a scattered applause, a few shaken hands, and Jungkook smiles shyly. The crowd dissipates, leaving behind a man with curling blonde hair making his way toward him.
“Park Jimin, I work in marketing.” He introduces. Jungkook shakes his hand. He’s about to ask Park Jimin about his career when he sees you, wearing a navy dress and holding a stack of papers. Your hair is up again, this time in a no-nonsense ponytail.
“Oh, hey Jimin,” you say cheerfully and Jimin grins, exclaiming your name and giving you a hi-five. “Whatcha doing?”
“Sizing up the new guy,” Jimin stares at Jungkook from the corner of his eye. “You did good here. I could just eat him up.” Jungkook’s eyebrows disappear into the fringe of hair that falls over his forehead as he sees you trying to control your laughter. You pat Jimin on the butt with a fondness that isn’t missed by Jungkook.
“Go back to work Chim,” you say and Jimin shrugs and bounds off towards his office. Jungkook levels you with a look, eyebrows still raised, and you giggle. “You get used to him.”
“Anyway,” Jungkook says, picking up his iPad from his desk. “I have something to show you.”
“Show me?” You’re curious now as you walk into his office fully, still clutching your papers. He uses his tablet to switch the screen on the TV above his desk. It’s a small acoustic band, playing in Central Park.
“I tracked down the band that plays music in the North end of the park – the one we listened to that day that I decided to take this job,” Jungkook explains. “I’m thinking of using them somehow for my first project. I got in touch with the lead singer – we’re thinking of using them for guerilla advertising.”
“Taking something so pure and commercializing it?” You ask. “Knew I’d found the right guy.” Jungkook chuckles and watches you put down the stack of papers on his desk. “Anyway, here’s your contract. Sign it, and I will be out of here.” Jungkook fingers the front page hesitantly.
“A whole year,” he says wonderingly. “Wow.”
“Why do I feel like this is the first real commitment you’ve ever made?” Your hands are on your waist as you level him with a judgemental look on your face.
“Its not,” Jungkook argues, mildly offended. “I worked my last full-time job for two years. And fuck – I do regret that one.” He holds up two fingers to drive the point home.
“Do me a favour,” you sigh. “Don’t quit or get fired before this year’s up, otherwise I don’t get my bonus.”
“Wait, I can leave whenever I want? Then what’s the point of the contract?”
“Just sign the damn thing!” You watch as he groans and scribbles his signature at the bottom. “Nice doing business with you Jeon Jungkook,” You shake his hand vigorously. Jungkook watches you collect all the papers.
“Hey, I was thinking of maybe getting some lunch. Do you know a place?” He asks, checking his phone for the time. You stare at him.
“Are you… asking me out?” Jungkook blinks. What?
“Whoa, no,” he amends. “I’m just asking you to show me a restaurant.”
“I mean, I’m the only friend you have in New York,” you ramble on. “You don’t wanna complicate that.”
“I know,” Jungkook starts. “I’m not asking you out.” You ignore him, Of course you do.
“I mean, sure, we’d have fun, roll around, get into some erotic humiliation fantasy—” You’re wringing your hands. Jungkook thinks if he wasn’t sweating while giving his speech before, he’s definitely sweating now.
“I—Erotic?”
“—But it’ll all blow up in our faces, end very badly, and we’d never speak to each other—”
“Can you slow down for a second—”
“It’s just not a good idea Jungkook—”
“I’m not fucking asking you out, I swear to god!” Jungkook almost shouts, and you shut up. He watches your eyes go wide, and you bite your lip as if to hold back a sob. He winces inwardly.
“Okay,” you say, your voice unusually small. “You don’t like me like that, I get it. You don’t have to be so mean about it,” Your voice is trembling now, and you look down at your feet. Jungkook sputters, taking a step towards you.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t--,” but he realizes that your voice wasn’t trembling from hurt, it was just you trying to keep your laughter in. You look up at him now, mirth swimming in your eyes and he knows he’s been had.
“God, you’re such a girl,” you grin. “Come on sister, it’s my treat.” Jungkook watches you turn on your heel and march out and wonders if there will ever come a day when he’ll have you all figured out.
You bring him to a brunch place at the corner of the block. It’s got a long French name Jungkook struggles to pronounce but he orders a large smoked salmon avocado toast while the two of you sit at a small table by the window.
“So, was it an easy move?” you ask, chopping your broccoli into tiny pieces before eating it.
“It was tough leaving my mom,” Jungkook offers. “My brother gave me some shit. But, uh, the timing was right,” He nods, as if satisfied with that answer. You’re watching him, a small smile on your face.
“An ex?” you ask. Jungkook winces, remembering that you’re far more astute than you let on. “I kinda got the vibe.”
“Yeah,” Jungkook answers, mouth full of salmon. “She’s great! Wants us to stay friends!” You make a gagging sound. “She’s also convinced she can cure me of my emotional unavailability.”
“You’re emotionally unavailable?” You ask laughing, and Jungkook nods vigorously. “Oh my God, I’m emotionally damaged. My ex was so kind to point that out when he cheated on me. I haven’t seen you at the meetings.”
“I’m done with the relationship thing,” He sighs, giving you his leftover broccoli, which you accept graciously.
“Girl, you are preaching to the congregation,” you cheer, raising your hands in agreement.
“Choir.”
“What?”
“‘Preaching to the choir’. You’re supposed to preach to the congregation. That’s the expression.” Jungkook takes a long swig of his hot chocolate.
“Did you understand what I was saying? Then don’t be a dick about it,” you smart and Jungkook laughs. He finds he does that a lot in your presence. “Anyway, I’m having some friends over tomorrow. Why don’t you come? You can meet some new people too.”
“I’m gonna have to check my schedule,” Jungkook says solemnly, pulling out a wad of cash to pay for his meal. “I’m really busy. I work at Vogue now,” you’re giggling. “It’s not just some little blog on the internet.” Your laughter drowns out everything else and Jungkook finds he likes being the one making you laugh.

Jungkook triple-checks the address you’ve texted him before knocking on the door labelled 2A. He hopes he’s picked up a decent enough wine as a housewarming gift. He’d even made sure to get the best alcohol content-to-cost ratio from the grocery store down the street from your place! He hasn’t even entered your apartment and he’s already sweating through his cardigan.
The door opens and it’s you, and this is the first time Jungkook sees you out of your usual business attire. Your hair is down, and you’re sporting skinny jeans and a tank top.
“Hey!” you say breathlessly. “You made it! C’mon!” He hands you the wine, which you graciously accept. You drag him into your living room and address the rather large gathering.
“Hey—HEY everybody! This here is Jungkook, he’s from LA!” There’s absolute crickets at your proclamation, and you roll your eyes. “He’s the reason I can afford all this beer.” You state plainly. At that, there’s a universal cheer that goes around the room.
Jungkook is generally wary of large crowds. Multiple strangers staring at him always makes him uncomfortable, but for some reason he finds himself blending in with your friends. Granted, he spends most of the evening with you playing wii bowling, jenga, and drunk card games with you and Jimin and two other friends – Taehyung and Namjoon.
The days turn to months just like this and Jungkook finds that life in New York is almost refreshing. It turns out he and Jimin have a lot in common, and that Jimin flirts incessantly with literally everyone he meets, not just him. After your party on that fateful day, he’s hit it off with Taehyung and Namjoon too. Taehyung’s a freelance artist, and Namjoon works in the music industry. He hangs out with you often too and finds that the two of you have easily become good friends. You don’t actually work for Vogue, working for a registered recruitment agency instead, so he doesn’t see you that often. He decides though, that this is a good thing. You’re definitely the one person he knows best in this city and he doesn’t want that becoming overcomplicated with having to see you as a colleague instead of a friend.
It is on a Friday night Jungkook finds himself dissolving in your extremely comfortable couch, after one too many beers, watching what he thinks is the worst romance film in existence. You’re totally enraptured though, a firm grip on your own drink.
“I swear all these movies have terrible music,” Jungkook mutters as the soundtrack crescendos and the female lead runs into the male lead’s arms in slow motion, fake tears staining her face.
“It’s so you know how to feel every single second,” you answer. Your voice is croaky from unshed tears as the female lead jumps into the male lead’s arms and he spins her round and round. Despite your newly found distaste for relationships, Jungkook has learned that you’re secretly a sucker for romance. He watches you as you mouth along to the dialogue.
“God, I wish my life were a movie sometimes,” you murmur, as the ending credits roll. “I’d always look good, and never have to go to the bathroom.” You turn to him abruptly. “And then, when I’m at my lowest point, some guy would chase me down the street, pour his heart out, and we’d kiss. Happily ever after.”
Jungkook groans, lowering himself further in your couch, chin now resting on his chest. You ignore him.
“Why don’t they ever make a movie about what happens after the big confession?”
“They do,” Jungkook replies instantly, taking a swig of his beer. “It’s called porn.” You slap his chest, sitting back comfortably next to him.
“God, I miss sex,” you say, your words slightly slurring together. The alcohol in your system has erased your filters, not that you had many in the first place. “Right? I mean, sometimes, you just need it.”
“There can never be just sex,” Jungkook mutters. “There’s always complications involved.”
“Yeah but why? What’s wrong with uncomplicated sex?”
“It’s womens’ fault,” Jungkook says and you sit up, affronted.
“Excuse me?”
“‘Hold me, let’s spend the rest of our lives together’” Jungkook mocks, making you scoff.
“As if men are any better. You’re all eyeing our pussies right from that first date.”
“I wish it wasn’t like that, y’know,” he continues. “It’s a physical act – a sport – if you will – like…. Bowling. Two people should be able to have sex like they’re going bowling.”
“For some weird ass reason, that made sense to me,” you say lazily. Jungkook laughs.
“Right, it’s just a sport. Maybe you shake hands at the end, and then get on with your life.” You nod. A comfortable silence follows. You pat him on his chest, small hands warm.
“More beer?” You’re downing yours. Jungkook nods sleepily and watches as you bend over to pick up the empty bottles and empty bags of chips from your floor and traipse over to your small kitchenette. You’re dressed in a simple tank and booty shorts and Jungkook can’t deny that, in your dimly lit apartment, your legs look good. He calls your name, and you look over at him.
“Let’s go bowling,” he says, tapping his foot. You blink at him in confusion. “Let’s have sex like we’re going bowling.” He repeats. You have the audacity to laugh out loud.
“You’re insane,” you tell him, walking back to the living room with more beer and a bowl of popcorn. Jungkook scowls and pulls himself up to sit up on your couch.
“Don’t laugh at me! This could be great. This could take all the weirdness out of it. We both want the same things.”
“We’ve been over this,” you say, tossing some popcorn in your mouth. “I don’t like you like that.”
“I don’t like you like that either,” he points out evenly. “That’s why this is perfect.” You chuckle.
“I don’t even know if I find you attractive!” you respond.
“That’s cute,” Jungkook says, standing up and bringing himself to his full height. You roll your eyes.
“Well, I do have a thing for jerks,” you mutter, which has Jungkook scoffing. “Do you even find me attractive?”
“That’s cute.” He repeats. You wave your hands and stand up in front of him.
“No, no, no,” you say. “Before you got to know my awesome personality – strictly physical – first impression of me?”
“This is just two people talking right? Sharing notes?” Jungkook affirms and you nod. “I liked your eyes – you have nice eyes.” He sighs. You’re looking at him, arms crossed.
“I liked your lips,” you offer. “Thought you might be a good kisser.”
“I am,” Jungkook admits solemnly, and you snort. “Your breasts,” he adds, tilting his chin towards your chest. You look down at it.
“What about them?”
“They intrigue me.”
“Aw, really?” you seem incredibly flattered. You give your breasts a congratulatory pat. “That’s a first – no ones ever called by boobs intriguing before. I liked your hands by the way. I’ve always got a thing for tattoos.” He watches you eye the ink on the back of his right hand, your gaze traveling up his arm where the tattoos disappear into the sleeves of his shirt.
“Mouth.” Jungkook responds quickly.
“Thighs.” You counter.
“Voice.”
“Butt.”
“Eyes.”
“You said that already,” you’re smiling now.
“I meant it,” Jungkook responds honestly. You’re looking at him now, eyes narrowed.
“You swear you don’t want anything from me other than sex?” You ask.
“You swear you don’t want anything from me other than sex?” he counters. “I know how you girls get.”
“Don’t be a pig.”
“A pig who’s got a cute butt.” He wiggles his eyebrows. You roll your eyes.
“No relationship,” you state. Jungkook nods. “No emotions. Just sex.”
“Whatever happens,” he adds. “We stay friends.” You nod back at him. The two of you stand there, staring at each other.
“Swear?” you ask.
“Swear,” he states evenly. “So…. I guess we should just start?” You laugh nervously.
“Okay then, let’s go to my bedroom.”
“Wait – what’s wrong with the couch?” Jungkok gestures wildly at your sofa, which he has to admit, is stupid comfortable. “It’s less emotional.”
“The bedroom has better light,” you point out. “And since we’re just friends, I don’t have to be insecure about my body.” Jungkook blinks at you, doe eyes wide.
“Aw, cmon,” he says. “You’re beautiful. You have nothing to be insecure about!” You fix him with a glare.
“That’s way too emotionally supportive. You need to lock that down.” You jab his chest with a pointed finger.
“Uh… your ass is way too bony?” he tries, watching your behind as you saunter towards your bedroom.
“Much better!” comes your reply, and he grins. Following you into your room, he watches with slight amazement as you tug off your top. “My nipples are sensitive,” you tell him conversationally. “I don’t really care for dirty talk, and had I known this was gonna happen, I’d have shaved my legs this morning.” You stand before him topless and he shrugs.
“I enjoy dirty talk, I sneeze sometimes when I come, and the socks stay on during sex. It’s a weird feet thing, nothing you need to be worried about.” He’s pulled off his shirt and tossed it on top of yours.
“Wait, feet gross me out too, look at that,” You grin. “Meant to be.” You tug your booty shorts off and stand in front of him wearing nothing but a bra and underwear. He whistles and you roll your eyes.
“Can you please be a little less fuckboy about this?” you ask, raising an eyebrow.
“Girl, look what we about to do right now, and tell me this isn’t peak fuckboy behaviour,” he berates. You can’t argue.
“Fine, whatever, be a fratboy, but will you just start my tits are freezing—” But Jungkook doesn’t let you finish your sentence for he takes two strides towards you, cupping your face with his hands and smashing his lips down on yours. You make a muffled sound of surprise, but he ignores you, tilting his face to deepen the kiss. It takes you only a split second to reciprocate, and your hands travel up his sides to rest on his shoulders as you open up and let him explore your mouth.
Jungkook pushes you backwards without breaking the kiss until you’re falling on your bed. You scoot back until your back hits the headboard and you watch him as he stares at you, eyes dark and hair tousled. Without wasting any more time, Jungkook crawls over on all fours towards you. Giving you a chaste kiss on the lips, his tattooed hand travels down your neck, grazes over your shoulder, the underside of your breast, stomach and finally arriving to rest on your thigh. You watch him expectantly, bottom lip caught between your teeth, and he refuses to break eye contact with you s he tightens his grip on your thigh to yank you down so you’re lying down underneath him.
His lips latch onto your neck and you let out a whine that has blood rushing to his cock. He sucks a bruise right over your pulse before his hand comes up to lower the strap of your bra. Pulling the garment down, he lowers himself to press kisses and suck on your breast, before moving to the other side to repeat with the other one.
“Hurry up,” you murmur from under him, thighs rubbing against each other. Jungkook chuckles, and nibbles slightly on your nipple, drawing a whimper from you.
“Patience, princess. Good things come to those who wait,” his hand reaches down, and he strokes a single finger over your clothed core, and you shudder. “So wet already and I’ve barely done anything,” he notes, mouth still closed around your breast. Letting go with a slight plop, he looks at you hungrily. “Let me eat you out.”
You raise your eyebrows but do not object, and Jungkook moves down, pressing kisses to your navel, until he arrives between your thighs. Using both hands to spread your thighs apart, his gaze moves from you to your core. He buries his nose in your pussy without warning.
“You smell fucking amazing,” he tells you and your face heats up instantly, your arms coming up to cover your face in embarrassment.
“I told you, I don’t like dirty talk,” you say, your voice coming out in gasps. Jungkook smiles over your pussy, mouthing it over your underwear.
“Too bad,” he mutters against you, and your toes curl from the vibrations his voice causes through you. “I’m gonna tell you exactly what I want to do to you whether you like it or not.” Hooking a finger through your underwear, he moves it to the side. He licks a stripe up your folds, before burying his nose back into your pussy, tongue lapping at your juices. You’re writhing under him and he places his hands on your thighs to steady you. You’re gasping for air, little moans leaving your pretty pink lips.
Jungkook feels your hand tangle in his hair as he sloppily eats you out. You’re dripping on his tongue and he, in turn, is practically salivating at the taste of you. Your hand tightens its grip on his hair, and he feels you grind down on his tongue.
“O-oh my god,” you gasp. “Jungkook.” He pulls away from you and looks up at you. Your juices cover his lips and chin and you’re looking down at him, eyes blown out, hair in disarray.
“Yeah? You like that?” he groans out, and you nod desperately. “Like it when I fuck you with my tongue?”
“P-please,” you whisper, and he grins.
“Tell me what you want baby,” Your ears turn red at that and you look away. He climbs up to hover over your face and lowers his lips onto yours. His tongue is immediately in your mouth, its sloppy and wet and he knows you taste yourself on him. Its an exchange of spit mixed with your essence and when Jungkook pulls away, a string of saliva connects the two of you. He watches as it snaps and dribbles down the corner of your lips. You’re panting now. “Tell me.”
“Your fingers,” you mutter, clearly embarrassed. Jungkook’s smile widens.
“My fingers where?”
“C’mon Jeon, don’t be a dick.”
“Alright, I’ll stop,” Jungkook answers noncommittally, pulling away to sit back on your bed. You moan and your hand covers his wrist in an attempt to stop him. He grins.
“Your fingers inside me.” You answer, face as red as a strawberry. Jungkook’s grin widens and he leans back down to place a small kiss on the corner of your lips. His hand travels back down to between your thighs and he strokes your folds with his index finger.
Without warning, he shoves two fingers in you, and you moan, small hands curling around his biceps, nails digging into his skin.  He buries his nose in the crook of your neck, and your hand tangles in his hair again. It’s quiet except for your gasps and moans and the sound of his fingers steadily pumping in and out of your pussy. He can feel that you’re near your high, so he carelessly shoves a third finger inside you, increasing his speed. Before you know it, you’re chasing your high, coming all around his fingers with a loud squelching sound and a gasp.
“Like music to my ears,” Jungkook hums, nudging his nose against your jaw. Your hands caress his chest, sides before one travels down to palm the tent in his jeans. Jungkook gasps, biting down on your shoulder. Boldened by his reaction, you twist your hips, so your knee rubs against his crotch and Jungkook freezes. You take this opportunity to flip him over, so you’re settled on top of him, your hair spilling around you. Jungkook lies back on your pillow, bringing his fingers that were just in you up to your mouth. You run your tongue along them, and he shoves them deep in your throat before pulling them out and spreading the mixture of saliva and your wetness across your face.
Your hands spread across his chest as you grind down on him and he groans.
“My turn,” you whisper, leaning forward and placing a chaste kiss on his lips. Your hips are swirling over his crotch as your mouth moves from his lips to kiss his jaw, neck and then moving down to swirl your tongue over a perk nipple. You’ve undone his pants and he takes no time pushing them down. You palm him over his boxers before pulling them down too and letting his dick spring free. You suck in a breath, tongue hungrily swiping out to wet your lips.
You waste no time to take him in your mouth. Unlike Jungkook, you’re not a teaser and Jungkook throws his head back and groans as your lips wrap around his length. Your head bobs up and down between his legs and Jungkook closes his eyes and loses himself to the feeling. His fingers tangle in your hair, gripping it tightly until his hips are out of control and he’s fucking up into your mouth. You let him, slackening your jaw, tongue lying flat against the underside of his dick. Jungkook gets high off of the sound of you gagging on his cock, spit dripping down him and onto your bedsheets. He’s so fucking close he’s seeing stars.
It takes all his self control to sit up and signal you to stop. You look at him, lips swollen and wet, a mixture of precum and saliva messily splayed across your face.
“No more,” he rasps, pulling you close and flipping you over so he’s on top again. “Need to be inside you right now. Condom?” You breathe out that you’re on the pill before smiling coyly up at him. Jungkook is painfully hard and wastes no time to slip inside of you. You let out your loudest moan yet, and he waits for you to get accustomed to his length in you.
“You can move,” you tell him, voice hoarse. Jungkook nods and pulls out only to slam right back in you with a groan. The first few strokes are long and languid until you’re pinching his nipple and motioning him to take you harder.
“I’m not a fucking porcelain doll,” you ground out. “Fuck me like you mean it Jeon.” Jungkook grits his teeth and pulls out of you completely. You’re about to ask him what’s wrong when he flips you over like a ragdoll so you’re lying on your stomach.
“Fine,” he grunts. “You’re such a brat.” You shiver at his tone and he’s gripping your ass to prop it up, pushing your face with one hand so you’re buried face down in your pillow.
Without warning he shoves himself back in you, one hand on your hip, the other still pushing your face into your mattress. He sets an unforgiving pace, ramming into you without pause until your muffled screams could be heard in your pillow.
“How’s that?” he grinds out, planting a smack on your ass as you moan. “That hard enough for you?”
“Y-yes,” you manage to scream. He shoves two fingers into your mouth, spanking your ass between thrusts until you’re smarting and red. Your garble moans around his fingers, drool lacing your pillow until he’s twisting his hand back in your hair and pulling you up flush against him. Grabbing one of your breasts he bites down on your shoulder.
“Fuck you feel so good around my cock,” he whispers in your ear and you shiver. Your ass is sore, but Jungkook shows no mercy, stroking it with his right hand and continuing to smack it. His hand moves around to rub over your clit and you almost fall over at the stimulation but his other hand clutching your breast keeps you upright. “You’re gonna cum now sweetheart? Milk my cock for all its worth?”
“Oh my god, Jungkook please,” you’re almost sobbing
“Come on baby, you can do it,” he croons, and you look over your shoulder at him and he wastes no time in closing the distance and planting his lips on yours. Without warning you’re coming, and that too all over Jungkook’s hand, dripping down your thighs and onto the bed. He’s not far behind, your convulsing pussy driving him over the edge before he’s releasing his load in you. You collapse on all fours in front of him as he pulls out.
“Damn,” he says, bringing his hand up to show you. “So, you’re a squirter, huh?”
“What?” your ears turn red as you look back at him. “Oh, my fucking god.” You watch as Jungkook licks his fingers clean without hesitation before collapsing on the bed next to you.
“Don’t tell me that was your first time squirting,” he grins. You look away in embarrassment, and he props himself up on his elbow, head resting on his hand. “Wow I’m just that good.”
“You’re such an ass,” you mutter. Jungkook cackles in delight.

You and Jungkook fall into a routine after that. There are multiple trysts, mostly at one of your apartments after work, a few in the bathroom of restaurants while you’re out with your friends, and one (1) time at work when you arrived for your weekly lunch date wearing the tiniest skirt Jungkook had ever fucking seen.
Sex with you is easy. Being friends with you is also easy. Jungkook can’t believe how simple you make his life. You’re a good friend, always willing to listen. He tells you things about his life back in LA, his ex and how thankful he was that he was finally out of a five-year relationship. You talk about your family, your sisters, your childhood. There are still lines the two of you don’t cross. Jungkook knows your last relationship left you scarred, but you never mention it and Jungkook never mentions his father. Some things are better left unsaid.
It isn’t until one day when you’ve dragged Jungkook out to Macy’s on the hunt for a new outfit you need to go meet a potential new recruit, that he manages to find the missing puzzle piece.
He’s sat through you trying out at least fifteen different shirts, all of which look the same to him, but you insist they’re not. It’s after you’ve finally picked out a dress shirt, some trousers and a new pair of “killin” shoes that the two of you collapse in a café across from the department store, your bags surrounding you.
“God, nothing feels better than a day full of shopping for shit,” you say, taking a huge sip out of your (soy) cappuccino. Jungkook rolls his eyes.
“I’ll show you exactly what’s better tonight” he mutters and its your turn to roll your eyes.
“Can you please keep it in your pants for a minute,” you groan. “I’m actually nervous about recruiting this guy.”
“Please,” Jungkook huffs. “You’re gonna be fine, you’re a natural!”
“Really?” You’re raising your eyebrows. “After the shit show you had to put up with?”
“Excuse me?” Jungkook pretends to be offended. “I’m here, aren’t I? You won me over.”
“Barely. For fucks sake you arrived to see me on the fucking baggage belt.” you huff, placing your head down on the table. Jungkook watches you, a twinge of sympathy running through him.
“Look, you are good at what you do. I don’t think I’m an easy person to convince, if I do say so myself,” he says, voice gentler. You look up at him slowly, figure still hunched. “Maybe you’re a little unorthodox but hey! We need someone like that. Just be yourself, you’re gonna be fine.”
“You think so?” you’re pouting, and Jungkook’s heart melts a little.
“100%”
You’re smiling faintly at him when the two of you hear your name being called. You freeze and look past Jungkook, a glassy look overtaking your eyes.
“It is you!” the voice comes closer and Jungkook turns around to look at what is possibly the most beautiful man he’s ever seen in his life. He’s tall, hair pushed back in a neat part, wearing a three-piece suit. In front of him, Jungkook feels like a giant toddler in his sweatpants and colorful hoodie and messy hair.
“Seokjin.” Your voice is hushed and oddly quiet, something Jungkook has never seen before. He eyes the two of you curiously.
“How have you been?” The man – Seokjin – asks. “It’s been forever.”
“Yeah,” you clear your throat. “It really has.” It’s awkward for a minute until Seokjin’s eyes land on Jungkook. His eyes travel to the cups of coffee in front of the two of you, and something flits across his expression.
“I’m sorry, are you two--,” he starts, and you’re rushing to correct him, but for some reason, Jungkook’s body moves on instinct.
“I’m Jungkook,” he says, getting up and offering a hand.
“Seokjin,” the man answers, taking it and shaking it firmly. “It’s nice to meet you.” There’s another beat of silence and then a girl is running toward you, calling Seokjin’s name. Seokjin freezes as the girl catches up to him, laying a hand on his shoulder to catch her breath. Jungkook feels you freeze up even more, if possible.
“Hi!” she says brightly, looking from Jungkook to you. “Friends of yours Jinnie?” she addresses the taller man. Jungkook doesn’t fail to notice that she’s just as beautiful as Seokjin. Pretty people really do stick together. You stand up abruptly behind Jungkook and he feels you clutch at the back of his hoodie, out of Seokjin’s gaze. Seokjin clears his throat.
“U-uhm, this is Joohyun,” he offers. “My fiancée.” At this point you’re tugging wildly at the back of Jungkook’s hoodie and he isn’t stupid. He gets the hint.
“It’s very nice to meet you,” he says, plastering on his best fake-charming smile. Joohyun seems to buy it because she grins back. “But we really are in a rush. Places to be! Nice meeting you guys!” and he turns around without another word, grabs your hand in one of his and picks up your bags in a single fluid motion with his other. Then he’s pulling you out of there, away from the café, away from Seokjin and out into the busy street.
You walk behind him wordlessly, hand still clasped in his and he drags you up a few blocks until you’re at Bryant Park. The two of you find a bench and collapse in it, slightly out of breath.
“Thanks,” you whisper, after a while.
“No problem.” Jungkook replies.
“You’re not gonna ask?”
“Should I ask?” He turns to look at you. You chuckle weakly and lean back to stare up at the tall trees.
“My ex-boyfriend,” you say. “Obviously.” Jungkook had figured that but he nods along anyway. “He—uhm—cheated on me,” you continue and Jungkook suddenly feels white-hot rage curling inside him. You’d mentioned it before on the first day of his new job, at brunch, but it hadn’t registered until now. “With the girl we just met.”
“What the actual fuck.” He mutters, running a hand through his hair.
“He’s the reason why I can’t--,” you start, then stop. You take a deep breath before continuing. “Why I can’t get myself to enter into another relationship.” Jungkook doesn’t know what to say to that but it doesn’t seem like you care. Now that you’re talking, the floodgates are open.
“We’d been together since college. I imagined we’d be endgame y’know? Everyone always told me how lucky I was to bag a man so attractive and smart and I felt lucky. Jin was always the best, the most caring, the most loving. We had some really great times together. But then… I don’t know… college ended and careers happened and I struggled to find a job straight out of university, while Seokjin comes from a long line of rich businessmen and he was already working for his dad’s company by graduation. We drifted after that. A part of me resented his privilege, I was envious of what he had. I took it out on him, and I guess he-he—”
“That does not give him the right to cheat on you.” Jungkook stops you. “I get being unhappy in relationships, I really do, but in no way is that the correct response.” Your eyes are glassy and full of unshed tears.
“She’s like him, y’know,” you continue, sniffing. “Beautiful, successful, I heard she owns a clothing line. Seeing them together it made me realize that I was the anomaly.”
“Don’t.” Jungkook says. “Don’t put yourself down. Look at you!” He gestures at you and you look up. “You’re smart, cute, successful. He’s trash for not recognizing that.”
“No, what I am is broken,” you give him a small, watery smile. “I haven’t been able to let anyone in since Seokjin and I broke almost a year ago.” Jungkook sighs and shuffles closer to you. Sniffling, you lean over to rest your head on his shoulder. “Thanks for today Kook,” you murmur against him. “I don’t know what I’d have done if you weren’t there.”
Jungkook sighs and leans over to kiss the top of your head lightly. The two of you sit there, amongst the chirping birds and trees, leaning on each other. Jungkook squeezes your hand and tries not to think of the unfamiliar feeling curling inside his stomach.

Things change after that. Jungkook finds that the two of you are almost domestic with each other. You stay over more often, and he finds you in his kitchen in the mornings, flipping pancakes wearing nothing but his button down. It’s so normal that Jungkook often has to take a step back and remember that the two of you are just friends. Seasons change from autumn into winter and a sheet of snow covers Manhattan.
“My sister’s in town,” Jungkook tells you one morning, offhandedly.
“Older or younger?” You’re making pancakes in his kitchen and you set down a plate of them in front of him before returning to make yourself some. Jungkook shakes the can of whipped cream next to him before squirting himself some.
“Older,” he grins. “She lives in LA with Dad and she’s in New York for business.” It’s the first time Jungkook has mentioned his father in front of you since the day the two of you met. You don’t prod. “My parents are separated,” he offers.
“I figured,” you shrug, sitting down across from him and refusing the can of whipped cream when he offers it. “Do you hate him or something?”
“What? No!” Jungkook laughs. “We just aren’t close that’s all. Everyone expects me to be this prodigy because of my Dad’s reputation, but I barely know the guy. Anyway, my sister wants to meet you.”
“Me?” You’re surprised.
“Yeah she wants to see who it was that convinced me to leave LA.”
“Oh, so that’s my reputation in the Jeon household now is it?” Jungkook gives you a cheeky grin. “How nerve-wracking—you sure you want me meeting your family? Makes us sound more than we are.”
“It’s not like that,” Jungkook argues, ignoring the faint twinge of disappointment somewhere deep within himself. “She’s only in town for three days. Come get some brunch with us tomorrow.”
“Fine. But you need to do something for me in return,” Your mouth is full of pancake and your hair is mussed but Jungkook smiles endearingly. “I have this… thing I got invited to tonight and I need you to be my date.”
“Are you sure? It makes us sound more than we are,” Jungkook throws your words back at you and you kick his shin under the table.
“Shut up, it’s my childhood friend’s Christmas party and our families are close so I have to go but I don’t have a plus-one and I need you there to keep me sane. Seokjin’s gonna be there.”
“You’re asking if I want to go with you,” he starts slowly. “To a Christmas party. As your date.”
“Well, yeah,” you shrug. “We go, drink at the open bar until we can’t see straight and then come home and you pound me into your tempur-pedic.”
“You’re disgusting,” he grins. “But, okay, I’m in--what the hell.”
“Do you have a tux?”
“Girl look who you speaking to,” he gestures at himself, sitting up straight and throwing his chest out. “Of fucking course, I have a tux.”
Wow, Jungkook thinks to himself that evening as you stand in your door in front of him. Long olive-green silk hugging every curve of your body, you grin up at him. You’d tamed your hair by pinning one side up, clutch in one hand, and feet in black pumps.
“Well?” you grin. Jungkook whistles, shoving his hands in his plain black tuxedo.
“Yeah well, you clean up nice too Jeon,” you pat him cheerfully on his chest, causing a warm feeling to flutter through him. “Let’s go do this thing.” You straighten his tie, and Jungkook swallows. He doesn’t know when exactly it happened, but over the course of time you really have him wrapped around your little finger.
The two of you uber down, your warm body next to his as you tell him some inconsequential story about your high school prom.
“We didn’t have prom at my school,” he tells you and you gape at him. “We had sports day though.”
“That is so sad.”
“Not really,” Jungkook shrugs. “Social gatherings are terrifying.”
“Never would’ve pegged you as the socially anxious type Jeon.”
“Well I am,” Jungkook rests his elbow on the car door, his chin in his hand to look outside. “I can’t believe I’m going to this rich people thing with you.”
“C’mon! It’ll be fun!” you send twin finger guns his way and he smiles wantonly.
“No seriously,” he says, looking at you, chin still balanced on his hand. “Thank you. You always manage to take the edge off and make things less intimidating and make me feel like I can step out of my comfort zone.” You blink at him, grin fading at his sincerity.
“What’re friends for, right?” you say, your voice quiet.
“Right,” he says back, just as quiet.
“You know,” you ramble on. “When I first saw you, you did totally strike me as a stereotypical fratboy. I was a little scared.”
“Of me?” Jungkook points at himself, surprised. You lean back in your seat and rest your head back.
“Yeah,” you mutter. “You reminded me of the guys I went to high school with. The jerks that ranked the girls by how fuckable they were and shoved kids into lockers and giggled at you as you tried to present your history project to the class.”
“Why didn’t you just beat them up?” Jungkook isn’t offended by your generalization. He knows what you mean. “The you I know would’ve stabbed someone’s eye out with a pencil.”
“I was different when I was sixteen,” you smile. “But you’re right, now I’m not beyond stabbing someone’s eyes out with a pencil. Anyway, I’m sorry for judging you.”
“It happens,” Jungkook shrugs but you shake your head vigorously.
“No, you’re sweet,” you continue. “I’m so happy we met. And that we’re friends now.”
“I’m glad too,” Jungkook grins, punching you lightly on your shoulder. “Are you sure you can do this? I saw how you were when you saw Seokjin that day.” You bite your lip and look out the window.
“I’ll be fine,” you say slowly. “I have you.” Jungkook blinks and gulps.
“Listen, there’s something I need to tell you—” he starts but the uber is arriving at the venue and you’re getting ready to step out of the car. Jungkook stares at the ceiling before getting himself out. Checking in your coats at the entrance, the two of you enter together.
You were right, Jungkook notes. This isn’t just some Christmas party. Lights sparkle down at him and the massive Christmas tree in front of him is decorated to the nines. The bar is sparkling with decorations, and the tables are decorated with fancy centerpieces and champagne flutes. People wearing black tie are mingling, men in tuxedos, women in floor length gowns.
“God,” you whisper next to him.
“You didn’t tell me you were also Richie Rich rich,” Jungkook whispers back and you jab him in the side with your elbow. “Oh my god you’re a trust fund baby! You’re Gossip Girl!”
“Oh my god shut up,” you’re giggling. “I’m the family’s black sheep, fortunately for you. I refused to major in what my parents wanted me to major in and that was apparently the final straw. I’m surprised Yoongi even bothered to invite me – we haven’t spoken in months. There he is now.”
A man shorter than Jungkook is making his way towards them. He’s got effortlessly tousled black hair and his ears are adorned with many earrings. His eyes flit lazily towards Jungkook before landing on you and he’s pulling you into a hug.
“Yoongi!” you say grinning, returning his embrace and he smiles, changing his entire demeanour. “How are you, this is amazing!”
“Thought I’d do something to get the old gang together,” he shrugs. “I’m happy you came.”
“This is Jungkook, we—uhm—worked together.”
“Ah one of her recruits huh?” Yoongi is shaking Jungkook’s hand. “Min Yoongi, pleasure to meet you. Please make yourself comfortable.”
“Thank you,” Jungkook is sure his palms are sweating again. He picks up a flute of champagne from a waiter passing by and takes a huge gulp. You and Yoongi exchange pleasantries for a little while longer and then he leaves the two of you to greet some other guests that are just arriving.
“Wanna go to the bar?” You’re pulling him in the direction of the alcohol before he can say yes. You wave down the bartender and order your drink and turn to Jungkook. “You okay?”
“Why? Is it obvious I’m freaking out?”
“You country bumpkins are so cute,” You pinch his cheek. “What were you trying to tell me in the cab?” Jungkook looks sideways at you, but sees who’s approaching and clears his throat.
Seokjin looks even better than Jungkook remembered, in a well-tailored suit, holding a glass of wine. You turn and freeze momentarily.
“Jin! Hey,” your voice is steady and Jungkook is almost proud of you.
“I’m glad you made it,” Seokjin mirrors Yoongi’s words from earlier. “You didn’t last year.”
“Yeah, well,” you say sheepishly. “There were just some people I couldn’t face last year.”
Ouch, Jungkook thinks, on Seokjin’s behalf. If Seokjin hears the slight bite in your tone, he pretends not to notice.
“You’re Jungkook, right?” Seokjin’s addressing Jungkook now. “From the mall.”
“Yeah, good to see you again man,” Jungkook smiles and the smile Seokjin gives him in return is incredibly genuine. Your hand is snaking down and gripping Jungkook’s, and he gives you a squeeze, something that doesn’t escape Seokjin.
“Are you two together?” he asks conversationally, and Jungkook is about to vehemently deny the question, when you squeeze his hand back.
“We are,” you answer, much to Jungkook’s shock. He almost chokes on the last of his champagne before he puts the empty glass down on the bar. “We met at work.” He’s trying to calm himself down, trying to stop that warm feeling bursting through him again. You talk to Seokjin for a few more minutes before he’s leaving the two of you to your own devices again.
“So, you beat me to what I wanted to tell you in the cab earlier,” Jungkook grins. You look up at him and he leans in, placing a chaste kiss on your lips. “That I like you,”
“W-what’re you talking about?” Your voice is barely above a whisper. Jungkook leans in and nudges his nose against the column of your throat.
“I meant what I said,” he mumbles, pressing kisses under your jaw. “I’m asking you out. Officially.”
“We’re in public,” you’re hissing, firm grip on his wandering hands. Jungkook grins and leans back against the bar, shoving both hands into the pockets of his trousers. “And you don’t mean that.”
“Of course I do,” he schools his expression into one of sincerity. “You’re awesome, I love spending time with you. We have a lot of fun. Am I wrong?”
“You’re just being reckless—”
“Believe me, I am a lot of things, and reckless isn’t one of them.” Jungkook frowns. “Do you not feel the same way? I just assumed—”
“No, no,” your eyes are wide, panicked. “I like you too Jungkook, of course I do.”
“Then what’s stopping you?” You’re looking at him, eyes wide and he watches your gaze flit past him over his shoulder. Raising his eyebrows, he turns his head over his shoulder to see what you’re staring at. His mouth forms a straight line when he realizes its not a what, but a who.
“Seokjin,” he says, the bitterness leaking into his voice. “You’re still in love with him. Of course, why didn’t I see it before.”
“No! Jungkook, that’s not—”
“So, bringing me here as your date, what you said just now to Seokjin – what was that? A ploy to make him jealous? Hoping he’d run back to you? What, you didn’t wanna show up alone in front of him, so I was your safe fallback?” Jungkook is seeing white, his fists clenched, embarrassment and humiliation washing through him. “I’m just a distraction to you.” Your bottom lip is trembling now and you’re vigorously shaking your head, but Jungkook feels so empty and suddenly finds he doesn’t care. “I’m done. I don’t need to set myself up to get hurt by coming in between whatever this is you have going on with that guy.” He’s pulling his tie loose.
“No, don’t leave,” you’re begging, small hands grasping his arm in a last-ditch attempt. Jungkook sighs, untangling himself from your hold. “Please, Jungkook, hear me out—”
“I hear you loud and clear,” he says, a sad smile breaking out onto his face. Pulling off his tie he undoes the first two buttons on his shirt, trying to breathe. Clenching his fist, he’s walking past you before stopping to turn and take one last look at you. “We’re still friends okay? I just need some time. And for the record, telling you this as a friend, you’ll never be free for as long as you’re seeking Seokjin’s—or anyone’s – validation.”
And then he’s walking out of there, away from you, from a life that never really belonged to him. All he wants to do is to get out of this stifling suit throw on his sweatpants, drown himself in an obscene amount of chocolate and play Overwatch all night.
Tumblr media
“Slow down, you’re gonna throw up those eggs if you don’t slow down,” Jungkook’s sister chastises from across the table. “Jesus, you and Junghyun are both such fast eaters because you don’t chew. You’re gonna die early.”
“I’d like to die now,” Jungkook answers, his mouth full of medium-poached eggs and hollandaise.
“So, you got rejected, what’s the big deal?” She asks. “You’re a grown man. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and move the fuck on.”
“Easy for you to say Miss-I’m-engaged-to-the-love-of-my-life” Jungkook doesn’t mean to sound bitter. “How am I even going to face her after all this. I’m an idiot.”
“You really are,” his sister responds, elbow resting on the table and chin balanced on that elbow. “You always like to think you’re this cool, collected, distant guy when in reality you’re a giant softie that believes in soulmates.”
“I do not.”
“Yeah,” she grins. “You do,” She sighs. “Look Jungkook, that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it’s endearing, and there’s nothing wrong with giving yourself completely to someone. Just make sure whoever you’re giving yourself to is worth it.”
“You don’t think she’s worth it?” Jungkook asks glumly.
“She’s confused, it seems. And that is never a good thing, not in relationships.”
“So, what do I do? I’m still gonna see her at work occasionally.”
“Don’t do anything. The ball’s in her court. You’ve bared yourself to her already and she can either accept that or reject it. And eventually, it’ll get easier to be around her. You might even go back to being friends. And try to move on, will you?”
“With whom?”
“I have someone at work I can introduce you to,” she hums. “If you’re willing.”
“Whatever,” Jungkook mutters. “How’s dad?” His sister stares at him, expression suddenly serious.
“Well,” she sighs. “That’s also why I’m here to see you.” She says quietly
Tumblr media
Jungkook is avoiding you. You may not be the most intelligent person in any room, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. He hasn’t replied to any of your texts, dutifully turning his read receipts off so you don’t even know if he’s seen your messages. Whenever you drop by his work for one of your meetings, his office is always closed. You suspect Park Jimin has something to do with Jungkook knowing exactly when you’ll be by the company. When you corner Jimin about this though, he’s tight-lipped, always regarding you with a slightly judgemental stare. It’s clear where his alliance lies.
You could always drop by his place, but even you admit that’s bordering on being pushy. He did say he needed space but its almost been a month and you haven’t as much as seen his coconut head. The New Year passes just like that and you celebrate by finishing two entire bottles of wine by yourself and watching Love Actually for the twenty-seventh time. Yoongi invites you to his New Years’ party too but you decline, not wanting a reminder of what went down at his last bash. You also want nothing to do with Seokjin.
At first you were angry over what Jungkook had said to you before he’d left that party. But soon after, once you’d calmed down, you’d realized he was right. Seokjin was never going to look at you and it was foolish to wait around while he carried on with his life. You deserved better, and Jungkook had taught you that. The realization was oddly freeing.
More than anything, you miss your friend. The coffee dates, the weekly brunches, someone to watch cheesy movies with. And, you admit shamefully, you also mis his dick. Jungkook had been right, you should’ve given the two of you a chance.
It isn’t until a cold morning in February, a whole two and a half months after the entire fiasco, that you finally see Jungkook. He’s standing outside the building, winter coat on and a burgundy scarf around his neck. He looks out of character, dressed like a businessman instead of the usual college-boy sweatpants and baggy t-shirts that you’re used to seeing him in. His hair is longer than it was when you saw him last, curling slightly at the ends. It suits him. He’s chatting happily with Namjoon about something, waving his hands around descriptively, matching cups of coffees in their hands.
You hesitate to get out of your uber, but you’re late for your nine am. There’s no way to avoid him, with the two of them standing right in front of the entrance. You step out of the cab hesitatingly and Jungkook sees you right away. If he’s nervous about running into you, he doesn’t show it. Instead, his face softens into a small smile and he gives a small wave in greeting. You return his greeting shyly.
“Oh, hey,” Namjoon greets, as you approach the two of them slowly. “Got a meeting today?”
“Yeah,” you reply, eyes travelling from Jungkook to Namjoon. “I’m late.”
“I’ll leave you guys to it then,” there’s nothing sly in Namjoon’s tone, but the guy is like, insanely intelligent and you don’t doubt his intentions. “Gotta see Yoongi about this newest track I’ve been working on.”
Jungkook bids Namjoon goodbye before the two of you are making your way inside.
“How have you been?” you’re the first to break the silence. Jungkook takes a sip of his drink.
“Good,” he answers. “I finally beat Breath of the Wild.”
“Took you long enough,” you tease, and he chuckles. You follow him into the elevator and watch as he presses your floor for you, along with his. “I haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Yeah, I,” he clears his throat. “I went to LA to see my dad,” You whip your head to look at him. “He wasn’t well so I worked remotely for a month or so.” So, he was never actually avoiding you, he wasn’t even in the city! You feel oddly relieved.
“How is he?”
“Fine,” Jungkook replies. You can’t help but notice that his animated self from earlier is gone, replaced by someone more somber. “I spent Christmas there.” The elevator doors open at your floor and you step out.
“Listen Jungkook,” you say quickly turning around. He pauses, pressing the button to keep the doors open, and looks at you questioningly. “I’m sorry – for everything.”
“Don’t apologize for your feelings,” that small smile is back.
“No! I mean – I’d really like it if we can be friends again,” you’re panicking. “I’ve missed you.” He grins at that, reminding you of the Jungkook you’d been intimate with.
“I’ve missed you too,” he answers, and something in your chest lifts. “Of course, we’re still friends.”
“Okay—wanna get brunch with me this week? The usual place.”
“I’ll text you.” Is all he says before he lets the doors close, leaving you standing there, slightly breathless.
You spend the rest of your day with a bounce in your step.
Things return to normal after that – somewhat. You and Jungkook start hanging out again, but you can tell something is off. He’s cheerful as always, but he’s holding back. It’s obvious that whatever he offered you that day at Yoongi’s party is no longer on the table. He’s guarded, confides in you less, heart locked away in a place you can’t even begin to reach.
But he’s here, in your life, tangible and real, and you tell yourself that this is enough. Until one day, when it all comes crashing down.
You’re at his place, and he’s retreated back into the kitchen to get the two of you more beers. His phone lights up, vibrating on the coffee table in front of you. It’s not that you mean to pry, but your eyes unconsciously travel to the notification that’s blaring on his screen.
1 New Message Jieun: Hey! We still on for tomorrow night, right? Gonna wear that dress you like 😉
You swallow. Of course, he’s seeing someone. Everything makes sense – the reason he was able to have you back in his life was because he’d moved on and rightfully so. The two of you aren’t teenagers – you are adults, and he is well within his rights to find someone else when you’d so obviously rejected him. You wonder, why then, your chest aches.
Jungkook reappears, holding two bottles of beer in each hand. Placing them on the coffee table next to his phone, he offers you one, which you accept, plastering a grin on your face. He grabs one himself, picking up his phone and collapsing on the couch next to you to turn his attention back to the movie that the two of you had been watching. From the corner of your eye, you watch as he checks his messages, eyes lighting up, a smile on his face as he types up a response.
You spend the rest of the night holding in tears.
Tumblr media
You invite Taehyung to yours the next day as a distraction. He insists on watching some documentary about gothic architecture, but you don’t mind. Whatever takes your mind off Jungkook. And what he might be doing right now.
“You know, you are insane,” Taehyung comments offhandedly.
“Excuse me?”
“The both of you,” he continues, lounging on your couch a little too comfortably. “Insanity.” You continue to stare at him, and he sighs. “You and Jeon.”
“What about Jungkook?”
“He’s in love with you,” Taehyung answers plainly, as though he’s telling you today’s weather forecast. Your stomach drops. “And you like him too, but are too dumb to admit it.” You scoff.
“He has a date tonight. That hardly screams ‘in love with me’” You point out. It’s Taehyung’s turn to scoff.
“Please,” he chuckles, arms coming up to rest behind his head. He sits like your dad. “It’s only his third date with that girl. It’s nothing serious.”
“And he’s not in love with me.”
“He is,” Taehyung insists. “Told me so himself. I wasn’t gonna say anything because it’s none of my damn business but the two of you are so atrociously stupid—”
“He…told you?” you pause the documentary.
“Yes. Last week,” Taehyung is talking as though he hasn’t dropped the biggest bombshell on you. “But he’s putting himself out there because he thinks you don’t feel the same way. Frankly, I’m tired.”
“Why are you telling me this?” you whisper. Taehyung checks his watch.
“Because, you still have time. Time to go get him.” You laugh.
“He’s not even gonna be back yet,” you point out. “Plus, what if I go there and he’s having her over? Third dates basically mean sex.”
“He’s not gonna sleep with her.” Taehyung tells you.
“Oh, and I assume he told you that too—”
“He did.”
“What sort of conversation were the two of you even having?” You’re incredibly confused
“A deep one,” Taehyung’s monotone voice is starting to irk you. “I took him out for tea. He’s home right now – by the way.”
“Why do you know so much Kim Taehyung?”
“It’s because I’m always minding my own, and vibing,” he informs you. “Go get your man, for fucks sake.” You’re already running around grabbing your keys and coat.
“Thanks Tae,” you mutter, giving the sleepy boy a kiss on the cheek. He smiles, leaning further back into your couch and turns his documentary back on as you rush out of your apartment.
There aren’t any ubers around your place at this time on a Friday night and you’re stuck taking the subway to Jungkook’s. Tapping your foot impatiently on the 4,5 line you rush out as soon as the train doors open, running to the building you know he lives in.
Your mind is blank as you stand outside his place and ring the doorbell. The faint music coming from the inside stops and you barely have time to second guess your choices before the door is opening and Jungkook is standing in front of you. Dressed in a crinkled dress shirt and black slacks, it looks like he got home not too long ago. He looks at you in surprise. Before he can open his mouth and ask why you’re standing on his doorstep wearing your sweatpants under your winter jacket looking haggard, you step forward, crushing your lips onto his.
His response isn’t immediate, you’ve caught him by surprise. But slowly he melts into the kiss, arms coming up to rest on your waist. You grasp wildly at the shirt on his shoulders.
“Are you sure about this?” he’s whispering, shutting the door behind you as you push him further into his apartment. “Know that I want more?”
“More sure than of anything else I’ve been in my life,” you whisper back, pulling away. “And whatever you want, I want it too. I want you. I’m sorry it took me so long to realize that.”
“How did you know that I still wanted this?” he asks, before his face clears of the confusion and he’s grinning like he knows exactly how.
“We’re really gonna have to send Taehyung an expensive bottle of wine soon,” you grin back. “But first, I need you out of these pants.”

MASTERLIST
Word Count: 2267
You narrowed your eyes as the city continued to bustle, noise from people and cars emitted in the air. Clouds hung sparsely over Central City as the waning moon took the place of the sun high in the sky. The wind blew a light breeze through your hair. You kicked a leg back and forth gently as you sat on the edge of the STAR Labs tower wings. Your other leg was bent close to your body, an arm resting over your knee. The height didn’t scare you so much as it used to. In fact, you didn’t mind being so close to the edge anymore. If you fell, then you fell. Truth be told, your powers would save you whether you willed it to or not. Some would say it’s a curse, others not so much. Your umbrakinesis acted like a defense mechanism at those times. A sigh left your lips as you straightened up your back, cracking it. Relief echoed through your body, but your heart felt heavy. Time is ticking... You knew what was happening downstairs, Gideon had alerted you when someone entered the Time Vault. It wouldn’t be completely wrong to say that you didn’t want to face him – couldn’t get attached since he’d been here. Not again. Staying up here was your way of avoiding that problem until… Until what, though?
The hair at the back of your neck stood up, a chill ran down your spine as your shadows alerted you of a presence a distance behind you. Turning your head slightly, you sent an icy look to the one person you dreaded to see. The face of the man you had seen pass one too many times. Their looks from their final moments imprinted in your mind for this one to come back. He was the last thing you had of them.
Harrison Wells.
A small smile was on his face, his hair tousled with his clear-framed glasses perched on his nose. He knew you’d be up here. The others told him you’d been up here since his reincarnation into the world. Since he’d made contact with Team Flash to help them and explain his predicament of currently living. But really, Harrison would have known if no one had told him. He had sensed it. Seen it – the images flickered past in his brain. The other versions of himself with you up here – the foreign familiarness that he personally did not experience.
But nothing more than a dreadful reminder of what’s past.
“I’ve come to say good-bye,” the genius started in a soft voice, wanting to approach you carefully. Your glare bothered him, yet he knows it shouldn’t, for once Harrison leaves, he will be united with Tess, the love of his life. Over and over and over again.
You snorted, turning your gaze to the stars that twinkled away from the clouds. You could see the constellations of Cassiopeia, winking brightly light-years away. “Such a shame, you could have helped them with Godspeed.” A bitter laugh left your lips as you recalled Nash showing you how to recognize the constellations and where to navigate from there. Sherloque would drink his tea up here with you and converse about his cases. HR would read to you his latest ideas and novels while you gave your input. You would drag Harry out of his lab to get some fresh air. And Eobard… he was the one who showed you this view, before Barry had woken up, before the Particle Accelerator had gone online.
“Team Flash is more than capable of handling threats on their own.”
“I take it you think that having a Wells must be a handicap, hm?”
“I never said that.”
“Hmph.”
“I couldn’t leave without telling you good-bye.” You pressed your lips thinly and Harrison continued, pocketing his hands in his dark coat. “It didn’t feel right to go without saying that.”  The night was getting colder, yet you remained out here in a thin jacket. Dare he say, he worried a bit?  You turned to fully look at him from your seated position. “I… won’t deny the sentiment I feel towards you. The memories of the past Wells. Their thoughts – well, previous thoughts – and feelings are still here.” Harrison had gestured to his head then placed a hand on his heart. Bile rose at the back of your throat as the smiling images of the boys hit your mind. You bit your lip hard as he spoke, “Each one of them felt strongly for you, but I’m not them. They’d want you to move on. To live-”
“No!” Your patience snapped, standing up rapidly with expert footing. Shadows went rampant in the night, wind howling in his ears. “You don’t get to say that!” Darkness immediately consumed the atmosphere and air around you both. Unbridled anger licked up in your heart and soul as you took heavy steps towards him. Harrison couldn’t see, but he could feel the moving darkness as he stood his ground. “You have no right to act all high and mighty towards me.” A hiss left his lips as a dark particle lashed at his arm, burning through his coat and marring his skin just as he heard your anger burn in your next words. “You don’t understand the strings that fate has chained me with! Nor will you ever understand my burden.”
***Flashback***
“What is it that you want?” You glared at the entity. The Monitor had appeared in your kitchen as you were pouring yourself some alcohol to enjoy your quiet night. You had taken some time away from all the heroes and villains running around.
“I came because I require your assistance for the Crisis.”
“Pass, I’m not in the mood to play the hero.”
“The point is not to be a hero or the villain, but to honor fate’s will.”
“Well fate can go hump a stump for all I care,” you sipped on your choice of alcohol, you turned away from the eternal entity only to find him in front of you right as you had exited your kitchen. A deep frown crossed your features. This is such a drag.
“Fate has bound your life to Harrison Wells the moment you first met him years ago.”
“False, that was Eobard masquerading as Wells. So, technically no.”
“That technicality may be so, but fate saw the speedster as your gateway to the rest of them. Without Thawne you would not have been so tied to Harrison Wells’ existence.” Rolling your eyes, you took another sip, already knowing you’d need a couple of glasses to forget about this interaction. “Your life is bound to his. To them.” The Monitor had you right where he wanted you, pushing images into your mind to allow you to see reason. “You were a lover.” You flinched as the image of Eobard appeared in your mind. “A partner.” Harry. “A friend.” HR. “And a confidante.” Sherloque. “Now this one needs you as well, he is in danger of himself with the Anti-monitor. My opposite entity.” You knew he was referring to Nash, the multiverse explorer with the haughty attitude and snarky comments.
“…”
“You are the anomaly that exists in the multiverse, there is no other in your position.” The entity saw the hesitation flicker in your being. “The time has come for you to be his protector.”
***Time Skip***
Nash panted, on the ground of this desolate land on his hands and knees. His mouth felt dry, tasting iron in his mouth from the blood on his split lip. How much longer can he endure this? The Anti-monitor continued to laugh at him, to mock him, for his weakness. Pariah gripped hard at the dirty snow, blood and mud defiled the pure whiteness. He couldn’t get back up. His body ached. No matter how hard Nash tried to push back, the Anti-monitor was too strong for him even with these temporary powers.
“Humans are such fickle beings,” the anti-entity spoke in a grand manner, “Soon the multiverse will be mine and there shall be no flaws. No humans to corrupt my domain.” The eternal being gathered his divine power into the palm of his hand and fired anti-matter at his appointed Pariah. The one to bear witness of the end of the multiverse. His curse.
Nash shut his eyes; this was the end. This was his end. A breath left him, what he expected to be his final breath. But the final blow never came. Ringing greeted Nash’s ears as he opened his eyes. Standing in front of him, shielding his body was you and your dark powers. For whatever reason it withstood the anti-matter as particles clashed against one another. You stood defiantly and gracefully in your fighting positions, conjuring your dark spectacles from every shaded corner.
“Don’t you dare touch him, you fucking monster.” You growled, your hands working magnificently to bind the Anti-monitor down. Once bound your umbra became spears and swords that pierced through the entity. While it could not kill the Anti-monitor, it slowed him down – meaning it would slow down his assault on Nash. You needed to get him to safety, needed him to have enough strength to teleport you two away from this dimension. And that’s exactly what you convinced him to do when you grabbed him, hugging his injured body to yourself as he fought to stay conscious.
***End Flashback***
“You don’t understand what loss truly is! You don’t get how hard it is to move on from this.” Just as you had moved, so had Harrison. A dagger of darkness at his throat, clenching the front of his cloak as he held a dagger of light to your own throat. Harrison  gritted his teeth as he used his powers to light up the area in his green light. “This pain, the misery of losing over and over and over again. To bear the burden of fate’s strings only to watch them all fall.” He flinched at how the veins around your eyes had darkened to a charcoal color. His throat dried as fear hit him. Harry’s memory flashed into his mind – the memory of you in this state, accidentally killing a meta in self-defense. “You’re just a selfish man, running away from what’s in front of him.” Harrison’s light battled against your darkness to keep the physical manifestations of umbra away from harming his body. “I despise people like that.”
“I’m only doing what’s best for me.”
“By what, Harrison? Running to the past? What’s in the past is best left in the past, those who hold on to the past don’t appreciate the present.”
“Such hypocritical words coming from someone who sulks around up here for what once was.”
“You don’t fucking know anything about me. All you have are some second-hand memories, but you don’t truly know me and what I’ve been through. You’re just like Barry.”
“And you’re any different?”
“At least I know the difference between reality and a desperate dream.”
“…” He knew Tess is doomed to die for time to flow, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t cherish every second with her until it was time. Maybe he was a desperate man chasing after a desperate dream, but he would until the bitter end. For Tess.
“A Time Loop is just a miserable notion for you to see Tess when her destiny is already a fixed time point. Just like Barry’s mother. Their deaths are absolute. Even with your Timeless powers you can’t interfere with what’s set in place.”
“That may be so, but I’ve fulfilled my part here – at least I have someone to return home to, even if they are doomed to die. I could be by her side over and over again.”
Harrison’s words pierced your heart, you pushed the tears back. The ache in your heart throbbed at a greater rate. At least… he had the power to return to his someone… The genius saw the haunting dejection in your eyes, the way your shoulders quivered as you tried to keep yourself together. He regretted the words that left his mouth…
“Do as you please,” you whispered, loosening your grip on his jacket to let him go. The darkness dissipated as you walked back to your perch with pocketed hands. “I’m done begging…” You mumbled to yourself so quietly that he didn’t catch your last statement. A tear left your eyes as you stood tall where you once sat.
“Good-bye,” Harrison murmured to the wind drifting in your direction before turning and leaving. A part of him felt torn by the things he had spat at you. What’s done is done. I doubt I’ll be back here any time soon. Clenching and unclenching his hand, Harrison shut his eyes and summoned his powers to pass through time. Tess, I’m coming home.
“Good-bye, Harrison.” Another tear fell, this time you wiped it as the night continued. He was gone. They were gone. You were alone, once again spectacularly alone and cold.
The pieces are all in place. The time has come…
Time still ticked as seconds went bye. A voice whispered at the back of your mind; the presence residing there since his exorcism. The one that kept you company through all this.
“It’s time, my queen.”

Party Hard - Owen Joyner x Reader
Tumblr media
JATP masterlist
Warnings: drinking, partying, intoxication, non sexual stripping, swearing probably,
Words: 6343 (which, if you know me, is a FUCK ton)
Summary: Going from tipsy to full on drunk is a terrible idea, but especially when you’ve got a secret to hide that could mean the difference between preserving and ruining your relationship with your best friend.
A/N: A couple items before we get started: I think I’m back on my bullshit? I mean I wrote this fic and it’s three times the length of my normal fics. Also I wrote this headassery as a literal self insert me(ace) x someone and so there are a couple flaws here and there that make this something I’m not 100% proud of. Owen picks the reader up a few times and I’m aware this kind of thing can really effect someone’s experience with this fic so I do apologize for the lack of inclusivity in regards to body type/ableism. I’m falling really behind on school work because I just can’t find the motivation which either means y’all will be seeing a lot more of me soon or absolutely nothing at all. Not sure which yet.
“You’ve got it so bad.” Charlie rests his left arm on his best friend’s shoulder, tipping back the half-full angry orchard bottle he’d been nursing for the better half of an hour. Owen’s stare is immediately broken and he crosses his arms defensively.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Sure you don’t.” Turning to meet his friend’s smug stare, Owen shoots Charlie a glare of annoyance before returning his attention to the girl on the dance floor. Surrounded by a gaggle of her closest friends, Y/n is dancing and singing her heart out to Fergalicious with Chelsea, Leila, Savannah, and Carolynn. The bunch of them share in sporadic laughs as they exchange ridiculous dance moves just to add to the fleeting moment’s laughter. An assortment of screeches and squawks blend together as they all prepare to sing the rap section of the song. Observing the level of excitement the girls have over the verse, Owen can’t help but laugh at the spectacle.
“Why don’t you just ask her out already?” Charlie inquires between sips of his cold drink.
“What?”
“Y/n. Why have you not asked her out.”
“We’re just friends.”
“Yeah. Because you haven’t asked her out.” Owen rolls his eyes before turning 90 degrees to fully face the smug guitarist. He turns about-face to prove a point, but another symphony of squeals at the next song choice drags his attention back to his other best friend on the dance floor. “You’re so whipped.”
“Am not.”
“Are too! Look, if you don’t ask her out tonight, I will.”
“You’re not even into her,” Owen protests unceremoniously. Setting the molasses colored bottle on the counter next to Owen, Charlie steps back and copies his position of crossed arms and a relaxed stance.
“You’re right, I’m not. But you are, and if that’s what it takes to light the fire under your ass then I’ll do it.”
“She wouldn’t say yes.”
“Are you sure? I mean, the only way to know for sure is to ask.” And with that, Charlie is off, speeding toward Y/n at a pace that launches Owen into an impulsive chase. To prevent his friend from doing something stupid, Owen shoves him in the opposite direction from the group of girls on the dance floor. What he hadn’t anticipated was Charlie moving so far so fast. Owen has longer legs, he’s supposed to be the faster one, not Charlie. That’s why he hadn’t anticipated turning away from his musical friend to come face to face with a very flushed Y/n. Her lip-gloss coated lips are parted as she catches her breath from all the dancing. They look so soft and inviting that Owen can’t help but stare, and doesn’t realize the several looks of confusion among the girls around him.
“Everything okay, Owen?” Snapping out of his hyper focused stare, Owen blinks a few times, trying to generate a reason for coming over.
“You’ve been dancing for a while.”
“...Yeah?”
“Let me fix you a drink?” His statement comes out as more of a question but the breathless girl agrees nonetheless. Owen extends his hand to her which she gladly accepts but not without a quick word to her friends.
“I’ll be right back, I’m getting a drink.”
Her friends aren’t stupid, quite the opposite actually. And they see right through Owen’s facade of fixing her a drink because she’d been ‘dancing a while’. Please. As if they didn’t know a desperate attempt at flirting when they saw it.
The pounding music from the backyard begins to fade and muffle once the pair step into the Shada’s beautiful kitchen space. Owen leads her to the kitchen island where he has her take a seat on one of the barstools in front of the high countertop. Stepping around the fixture, Owen busies himself with whipping up a drink for Y/n at the makeshift bar on the island. He doesn’t even have to ask what it is she wants. Ice, pink whitney, club soda, and a splash of lime juice mixed together in a red solo cup Owen had considerately written her name on before going all mixologist-mode.
“Your usual.”
“Thank you, sir. You know, I’ve only had a handful of barbecue chips since I got here, and I’m already tipsy, so this actually might get me completely drunk.” Taking a sip, Y/n hums out of pleasure, “Why do you make my favorite drink better than I make my favorite drink?”
“So you have a reason to keep me around.” At the sound of Y/n’s laugh, Owen cracks a smile in time with his favorite sound in the world. The blonde haired man leans forward to rest his weight on his left forearm. He stares at her with adoration seeping from his gaze, before lifting his own cup to drink with her.
“What is that?” she asks, sitting up taller to try and see into Owen’s cup over the island.
“Jack Daniels.”
“I want some.”
“No,” Owen answers swiftly albeit softly. Y/n, however, is not feeling as conciliatory.
“No?”
“Have you ever tried whiskey before?”
“Well, no-”
“You’re drinking a fruit flavored cocktail that’s like 30% nonalcoholic. A sip of this would knock you off your little ass.” Y/n frowns at his words and employs a fake pout of anger to guilt her now laughing friend. Despite her smile, she whines,
“You suck.” Owen merely shrugs unapologetically before sipping and wincing at his drink of choice. “So… how did your date go- with Amy?” And there it is. The question that’s been at the forefront of Y/n’s mind for the last 24 hours.
Owen met this girl Amy at a more professional house party type of event and they hit it off right away. They spent the night invested in conversation, sharing in a cacophony of laughter. Y/n had no right to be upset, but she was. Amy was drop dead gorgeous in that Mini length red, velvet dress that hugged her curves in all the right places. Her figure was snatched to the gods, and she was about 5’3”; a seemingly irrelevant thing to notice, but Y/n knew that was the height Owen loved in a partner. At least, based on all his previous flings. And not to mention, her beautiful golden blonde hair that extended all the way down her toned back. Amy was perfect to all standards including that of any straight man with eyes and undoubtedly Owen’s. They spent the entire night together, Y/n long forgotten despite having been Owen’s plus one.
Y/n on the other hand didn’t exactly view herself as the drop-dead gorgeous supermodel type. Seeing how Owen took an interest in her at that event, it was no wonder Y/n was jealous. In fact, she had been so jealous that she allowed their flirting to ruin her entire evening.
She had been invited platonically as Owen’s guest, but Owen didn’t feel guilty about leaving her alone once he saw Charlie was by her side the whole night. Little did he know Charlie was only there for her because Owen wasn’t. It was pity company. Pity company that she was grateful to have as she cried into a few gin and tonics. Y/n avoided telling Charlie about her feelings for the adorable drummer, but with the way events transpired, he had figured out what it was that had upset her.
Charlie so badly wanted to give Owen the guilt trip of a lifetime. And he did once he and Owen were alone, heading home in Charlie’s orange hatchback car. He did so by telling Owen about how his best friend had spent the entire evening crying into gin and tonics. ‘Y/n doesn’t even like gin and tonic’ was all Owen could come up with.
When he inquired about why his best friend was crying, Charlie said he didn’t know, but it may have had something to do with the fact that the person who invited her spent the whole night ignoring her; he left it at that, leaving Owen to connect the dots, sort of. Owen had come to the realization that Y/n must have been crying over him, but why? Unable to comprehend a reason, he pushed the situation to the back of his mind. So far back that when Amy texted him that same night, he immediately responded and eventually set up a date for them to get dinner alone Friday evening.
The date was fine. Objectively there was nothing wrong with it. But every time Amy took a sip of the gin and tonic she had ordered, he couldn’t help being reminded of Y/n that night. It took Owen a solid thirty minutes to finally conclude that maybe Y/n was... jealous? Of what? Of Amy? Quickly reviewing a long list of qualities, identical to the one that Y/n had thoroughly checked through when she first saw the blonde, Owen realized she was indeed jealous of Amy. But why? What did Amy have that Y/n didn’t?
Oh.
His initial conclusion in the car with Charlie had to be right. Y/n was crying over him, and seemingly jealous of Amy, all because Amy had his attention. Why was that a problem?
Oh… no. No, Y/n does not have feelings for him. Y/n is... well, Y/n. His best friend, his partner in crime, his confidant, there’s no way she’s in love with him. There’s a different reason as to why she’d been crying into drinks she didn’t like. And that different reason is why her text replies have been short and cold when he had asked for date night conversation pointers. And that different reason is why her smile kept faltering on FaceTime when he was asking for fashion advice for his date.
Y/n is not in love with her best friend.
Owen had spent the past year pushing down his feelings for the girl that threatened to bubble over the top. If Y/n was truly into him, he would’ve acted on them. But she isn’t, so he didn’t. At least, that’s what Owen told himself…
“It was alright,” he offers lamely as a reply to her inquiry. Y/n simply nods and takes another swig of her drink to dull the ache in the center of her chest.
“Just alright?”
“Okay, it was better than alright. She was great.” There’s a hole burning in the center of her heart, and against her better judgment, she expands the deficit by asking for more information.
“What does that mean- that she was ‘great’?”
“You know…” Owen trails off in search of the right words, some words, any words, but nothing comes to him. To sell her nonchalant demeanor, the hopelessly devoted girl is staring down into her cup as if it’s the most interesting thing in the room. She didn’t expect Owen’s eyes to be boring into hers when she looked back up, so she quickly musters a polite smile. Maybe the average onlooker couldn’t tell it was fake, but Owen knows something is off. He just knows. Because he knows her.
“How did those conversation pointers pan out?” She’s deflecting, he thinks.
“One of them worked.” I’m just feeding into it, he thinks.
“Only one of them?” He’s holding back something, she thinks.
“Well, yeah. We didn’t really do much talking if you get what I mean.” I don’t think I can handle this, she thinks.
“I see…” The pair stands together in a silence so tense they felt like strangers. It’s awful. Y/n and Owen hate every second of it, but what could they do? In a moment blinded by upset, Y/n reaches across the island to grab the newly opened bottle of grey goose and pours what must’ve been no less than three shots of liquid into her cup. No club soda or lemonade this time, she chugs down the rest of her drink in a flash; Owen stares at her in disbelief and shock.
Y/n hates being drunk, she likes being the designated driver, she’s never had straight up liquor in her life, and she’s a lightweight, that’s for damn sure. Owen knows all of these things and is even more surprised to see her reaching for an almost empty bottle of gin.
“Hey. Maybe you should take it easy, you’re gonna hurt yourself.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re a lightweight and you know it. Put the cup down.” When Y/n shakes her head no, something in Owen snaps and his desire to be gentle is long forgotten. “Y/n. Put the drink down.”
“Why do you care, Owen?” In taking time to respond, Owen sees the opportunity and goes for it, taking the cup from her loose grasp and splashing it down the drain of the vegetable sink. “What the fuck?!”
“I think you’ve had enough to drink. Come on.” It’s only a matter of time until Y/n becomes an incoherent human being that’s impossible to wrangle, so Owen is very aware he’s on the clock. Snagging two Arrowhead water bottles in one hand, he takes Y/n’s hand in the other and brings her into the Shada’s den. There are only a few other people in the room, one is a couple and the other a pair of pining idiots, to which Owen becomes slightly wary. Not that the dynamic would change much. He and Y/n are practically a couple according to everyone around them.
Chelsea and Charlie are sitting fairly close together for just friends, on the chocolate brown loveseat facing the couch that Owen has plopped his increasingly intoxicated friend onto; Leila is sitting in a single armchair that a very tipsy Taylor is hanging over the back of to hug her shoulders. Upon seeing Y/n’s pouting expression Chelsea seeks more information,
“You good, fam?”
“He threw it down the sink!” She’s fading faster than Owen had hoped.
“I did. I poured what would’ve been her fifth and sixth shots down the sink.”
“Jesus, Y/n, are you trying to kill yourself?”
“What are you, a cop?” Even tipsy she’s still sharp as a tack. If Owen wasn’t frustrated with her at the moment, he would’ve probably laughed. But he is, so he didn’t. Slipping back into caretaker mode, he hands her one of the water bottles he snagged from the cooler on the way out. In her typical stubborn and petulant fashion, Y/n weakly throws the unopened bottle onto the couch cushion next to her. All their friends laugh but Owen isn’t having it.
“Y/n.” And it only takes a firm call of her name for the slumped over lightweight to glare at him but oblige. She retrieves the bottle and sticks her arm out straight toward Owen’s still standing figure.
“I can’t open it.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this fucked up,” Leila comments.
“I don’t think I’ve seen you fucked up period,” Chelsea adds on. Charlie laughs lightly before resuming whatever conversation the four of them had going pre-Owen and Y/n’s entrance.
Satisfied with the small sips she’s taking of her water, Owen relaxes and takes a seat next to her on the couch. The temporary break in her temper tantrum allows Owen to save his breath; he opens his own water bottle, taking a few drinks which ended up being half the bottle. He’s given her a good bit of room on the couch but it isn’t good enough for Y/n. It takes her a few failed attempts to screw on the cap of her water but once it’s properly sealed, she moves closer to her best friend. The water has acted like some magical temperament cure as Y/n’s previously permanent pout has disappeared.
Owen knows he and Y/n are close enough to where cuddling wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. But the way she’s burrowed into his side, picking up his seemingly ‘heavy’ arm to place it around her own inebriated frame, laying her head high up on his chest, and unintentionally resting her hand on his lower abdomen, something feels off. Her hand isn’t dangerously low, but low enough that the side of her limp palm has met the waistband of his jeans. Owen can’t help but feel his skin tingle and burn under her touch. Why is he so affected by her touch all of a sudden?
Owen is pulled from his snowballing thoughts by the sound of Y/n’s muffled voice against his chest. He leans down as far as he can which places his head on top of hers gently.
“Hmm?”
“I’m sorry.”
“Hey, you don’t need to be sorry,” he whispers just loud enough for her to hear. A tiny drop of warmth on his shirt under her head triggers Owen’s memory: Y/n’s an emotional drunk. She doesn’t get drunk often but when she does, she goes all in and becomes somewhat manic as a result. That accounts for her previous anger. Now it’s sadness, so in about ten minutes, she’ll be easily excitable and bouncing off the walls.
Y/n had carpooled with Leila and Chelsea to the party, and though Owen was upset about her not picking him up like they’d briefly talked about at first, he’s suddenly thankful for the arrangement.
“Let’s get you home, yeah?”
“Unhhh.” The lack of a coherent response is enough for Owen, and after finishing the rest of his water, he sits up on the couch.
“Where’s your house key? Hm?” The prospect of losing her key is absolutely devastating to Y/n as she begins to weep. Her imminent distress in response to Owen’s question has all their friends laughing once more; Leila speaks up,
“Check the left chest pocket of her jacket.”
Owen nods, noting the directions, and gently rolls his friend over on her back. Deciding against using her strength, Y/n flops over onto her other side which still allows Owen access to her pocket. His long fingers dwarf the button fastener on her jacket that she often struggles to open, and sure enough her sky blue house key is in her pocket just as Leila said.
“Thanks,” he acknowledges Leila before taking Y/n’s cold hands in his own larger ones to help her stand. It’s a bit of a struggle to stand and as a result, the fading girl leans a bit of her weight into Owen’s side. “You gonna say bye to our friends?”
Y/n nods a goodbye to each person in the room, moving from left to right naming Leila, Taylor, Chelsea, and then Charlie. Upon saying bye to Charlie the small girl starts to cry again, harder this time, much to everyone’s confusion.
“What’s wrong?”
“Charlie looked a-at me like he didn’t l-like me.” The entire room bursts out laughing, Owen included this time, but she’s still crying. “It’s no-not funny.”
“I know. You’re right, it’s not funny.” Owen’s exaggerated sympathy goes undetected by the very emotional Y/n as she presses her face into his grey long sleeve shirt. She reaches up to hug her arms around Owen’s neck for stability as she adds more tears to the tiny spot from before. “Can you walk?” He asks genuinely as more of her weight leans into him. The only response Owen gets is a few soft sobs, and in reaction to her messy state, lets out a subtle eye roll. He shakes his head before bending down to place one arm under her knees and the other behind her shoulder blades, sweeping her off the ground before she can protest.
“Would you guys tell Jer thanks and that I had to take her home?” A symphony of affirmations and goodbyes usher him out of the house, and once outside Y/n’s crying diminuendos into short sniffles and the occasional sigh.
“Here, be careful,” Owen panics as his friend nearly bangs the front of her head against the roof of his car. Once he cautiously places all her limbs in the passenger side, Owen shuts the door and hurries over to the driver’s side as if Y/n could hurt herself in the next five seconds. He places the key in the ignition but before he even touches the gear shift, he turns and looks quizzically at his best friend. The sniffling and sighs coming from her puffy face have lulled her into an almost unconscious state; Owen puffs out a frustrated sigh as he reaches across the entire car to grab Y/n’s seatbelt for her.
Another thing about drunk Y/n is that her emotional state makes her more likely to give in to physical impulses. So after she registers Owen leaning across her lap for the seatbelt, she grabs his shoulder so he doesn’t move away. The action surprises Owen and he turns his face to look into her half-lidded eyes. He’s trying to make sense of the action but his trailing thoughts are interrupted when the girl in the passenger’s seat leans forward slightly to put her face against Owen’s neck.
“I like your smell.” Owen tries so hard not to laugh in fear of upsetting her again, but he can’t conceal the smile growing on his face. He then gently pulls away from her grasp in order to actually start driving,
“Okay. Thank you.”
The car ride is composed of mostly comfortable silence with the occasional inebriated comment or nonsensical sound from the girl in the passenger seat; Owen had been so captivated by Y/n’s uncharacteristically relaxed state, he’d been driving on autopilot and instead of turning left to get on the highway that runs south to where her apartment is, he’d gone north to go to his own place. No big deal, Owen didn’t plan on leaving her intoxicated and alone, and she’s stayed the night plenty of times before now. What’s one more night? It isn’t until he puts the car in park and helps her out of the vehicle that Y/n clocks her surroundings.
“I don’t live here.”
“You don’t, no, but I do,” Owen replies simply before he slides out of the car. Y/n stays in the car as if Owen told her not to move, and looks up at him confusedly when he opens her door. In her tipsy state, she is able to recognize what Owen is doing and smugly places her hand over the buckle of her seatbelt. With her tiny palm over the red button, she begins giggling maniacally.
“What are you doing?” Owen asks with a frustrated sigh although he can’t help the small smile overtaking his features at the sound of her growing laughter. He doesn’t get a response, just more giggling which lets him know he’s going to have to do things the hard way now that she’s in a lifted mood. “Kid, you have to get out of the car.”
“You can’t make me.”
Owen takes a step back from the open door to reevaluate. Y/n always tells him to work smarter, not harder. Another one of her many bouts of wisdom is that you can keep the attention of children and adults alike with a vastly dynamic change in volume. The question is will she notice Owen using this tactic on her in her drunken state?
“Hey, Y/n/n,” his speech drops to a low whisper. “I’m sad, can you hold my hand?” The change in volume works exactly as described; completely convinced by the sincerity of his whispering, Y/n gives him her right hand. “Can I have the other one?”
When she nods a small ‘yes’ and gives him both of her hands, Owen finds himself fighting the urge to laugh at how easy that was. He takes both of her cool hands in his larger left one to reach across her body and release her seatbelt with a swift CLICK.
Luckily Y/n didn’t tangle herself up in the seatbelt, but she had other ideas for causing trouble. Owen helped her out of the car but once she was standing on her own two feet, she began running away from him. With a slam of the car door and a string of breathy curses later, he chases after his best friend before she can hurt herself on literally anything in the parking garage. The sound of Y/n’s laughter carries through the vacant space, and despite all her best efforts, Owen quickly catches up to her. Her giddy intoxication allowed for the suspension of disbelief that she could outrun the much taller Owen Joyner, but she’s sorely mistaken when his strong arms wrap around her waist and lift her feet off the ground. Y/n’s bouts of laughter are contagious; Owen finds himself laughing alongside his best friend. Setting her feet back on the ground he asks,
“Are you going to run away again if I let go of you?”
“Yeah,” she chokes out through the tail end of her laughing fit. The candidness of her reply prompts Owen to throw his head back, shaking it as if in disagreement with the universe itself,
“I appreciate your honesty.” And with that, Y/n screeches in glee as her best friend maneuvers her body in his grip to lift her over his right shoulder.
“Owen!”
“You did this to yourself, kid.”
The silent elevator ride up to his flat is comfortable relative to the current position they’re in. Y/n’s no longer fighting being carried but instead entertains herself by tapping out an intricate beat on the surface of Owen’s back.
“Guess what song this is.”
The beat she’s playing is close to incoherent and Owen tries to stifle his full laugh in fear of making her cry again. He’s been successful so far, but now having Y/n over his shoulder, she can feel the movement of his abdomen that was unintelligible by sight alone.
“Your favorite song,” he guesses insincerely.
“No, my favorite song doesn’t sound like that. It was sicko mode.”
“That was not sicko mode.”
“Owen, how come you don’t wear a badge?”
“What?”
“Because you’re the song police?” Owen can’t help but snort out a laugh even though the comment was made at his expense. Still sharp as a tack.
Once the pair reach the front door of Owen’s ‘bachelorette pad’ as Y/n liked to call it, he sets her back on the ground albeit reluctantly as he recalls why he was carrying her in the first place. Thinking quickly on his feet, Owen forms a plan that’s more likely than not foolproof.
“Hey, Y/n/n?”
“Yeah?” Her voice is still right behind him thankfully.
“Can I have a hug?” After a few seconds of silence in the hall, Owen begins to doubt his plan until he feels the weight of his best friend leaning on his toned back. With her cheek pressed against the middle of his spine, Y/n brings her arms around his waist, clasping her hands tightly together. Her semi-public display of affection allows Owen some time to unlock his front door. Once he props the door open, Owen realizes that Y/n probably isn’t going to let go any time soon and opts to waddle through the threshold with her still attached to him. He’s able to turn around and lock them back in for the night which makes the girl begin to laugh.
“Was this your plan all along? To get me drunk so you could lock me in your apartment and hold me prisoner for the rest of my life?”
“And I would’ve gotten away with it, too...”
“If it weren’t for those meddling kids and their dog.”
True to his imagination that Y/n wasn’t letting go any time soon, Owen swivels her around his torso so that he could hold her to his side rather than support her with his back. He now has his right arm over both of her shoulders as she continues to hug her best friend. The way she leans her head onto his chest makes Owen’s heartbeat the tiniest bit faster. ‘She’s drunk, she doesn’t know what this does to you’ is the mantra blaring through Owen’s subconscious. Shaking any and all sort of romantic thoughts out of his head, he begins to lead her back to his bedroom.
Flicking the lights on proves to be a mistake once Y/n starts groaning miserably, and Owen decides the floor lamp is a better option than the overheads. Much to Owen’s surprise and relief, Y/n moves to sit on the edge of his bed on her own volition. She’s not upright for long as she collapses into the sheets of his unmade bed that contemplated neatening before leaving the house; hindsight is 20/20.
“Hmm. I like your smell,” Y/n parrots despite already bringing up the topic on the ride home.
“This is the same cologne I always use.”
“No. I like your natural smell.”
“What?”
“I was reading up about pheromones the other day. And there was this thing that said when couples like each others’ scent, it’s like a primal way of seeing if you’re immuno-compatible with someone so your offspring have the best chance for survival. It’s an evolutionary thing for the survival of our species. Ants have pheromones, too.”
Sometimes she has trouble remembering to feed herself, but leave it to Y/n to remember extensive information about pheromones whilst intoxicated. The concept is intriguing to Owen, so he proceeds to ask questions, ignoring the tug on his heart he felt after hearing her say the word ‘couples’.
“So, if I like your scent, we’re immuno-?”
“Compatible, yeah. But it’s mostly me because you can sniff out my period.”
“I can what?”
“I read that men can tell when a woman is at her most fertile because that’s when they like her smell the best. They did a study where a bunch of men were introduced to a few different scents, and without fail, the one they liked the most or would describe as ‘sexy’ or ‘attractive’ was the scent they took from the woman who was ovulating.”
Y/n continues talking about what she learned about pheromones as Owen picks up a bit of the mess around his room. She returns to the topic of ant pheromones as he digs through his surprisingly large closet for something for his friend to sleep in. His temporarily bubbly best friend also notes that he should ‘sniff her now because she’s ovulating and he would like that’ which makes him laugh into the drawers of his waist-height dresser. Returning to find her still slumped over on the bed, he pats her leg and beckons her to sit up. After Y/n’s upright again, Owen hands her his classic black ‘BEANS’ t-shirt and a pair of briefs that won’t properly fit her but will fit better than a pair of his actual pants.
“Can you put these on for me?”
“Yeah.” Owen’s conflicted with both wanting to respect Y/n’s privacy by leaving the room, and prioritizing her safety, and not leaving her unattended at any moment. He comes to a compromise which is staying by her side but turning a full 180 to face the wall of his bedroom. A couple of moments pass until Y/n begins whining frustratedly.
“Owen.”
“Huh?”
“I can’t ubns-” her words become incomprehensible as she begins to cry again and Owen turns around to find her struggling with the buttons on her shirt, her jacket long discarded on the bedroom floor. This shirt: her white, cap-sleeve crop top with a peter pan collar that she wore for anything mildly significant, this was her favorite. Owen remembers her fussing about how she ruined it only to find that she just forgot to steam it one day. So with a little heat and water, Owen had fixed the shirt like nothing ever happened, and he’d do it a million times over again if it meant he got to relive seeing the smile that graced her face for the first time again.
“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t do the buttons.” She runs the back of her right hand against her tired eyes to wipe away her tears and Owen internally curses himself for the way the small action makes his heart flutter.
“Do you need help?”
“Yeah.”
“Listen to me, you are okay,” he sinks to kneel in front of Y/n as she sits tiredly on the edge of the bed. Owen doesn’t miss the slight tremble of his hands as he reaches up to unbutton her shirt, but he prays that she will. Through tiny sniffles and teary eyes, she watches his hands effortlessly work down the length of her shirt, each button modestly dancing between his fingertips. Once the short top is fully unbuttoned, Owen returns to his normal standing height and Y/n attempts to shrug the fabric off her body. She struggles lightly and knowing her frustration is imminent, Owen reaches down to gingerly push the sleeves off her shoulders. The light graze of his rough, calloused skin against her own skin sends electric-like shocks through the both of them; yet neither of them believed the other felt it too.
Owen hastily withdraws his hands and, without warning, Y/n quickly removes the bralette she was wearing. Owen’s eyes widen slightly at her lack of inhibition. He does his best to be a gentleman and swiftly redirects his gaze to the white ceiling fan that has all of a sudden become the most intriguing object in the universe. His lower peripheral vision indicates that she’s finally slipped the black tee over her head, but she begins sniffling more fiercely as she struggles with taking off her jeans. Owen sighs and drops to his knees once more in spite of himself, and aids his best friend in slipping the material over the length of her calves and off the tips of her toes. Hoping to speed up the process, he grabs the briefs he had brought her and unfolds them in preparation for helping her into them. His efforts are all for naught as Y/n forgoes the need for any more clothing and slides under the covers of his unmade bed. Owen then turns to leave the bedroom, opting to set up on the couch for the night before Y/n’s small voice is cutting through the comfortable silence.
“Where are you going?” He sighs,
“I’ll be right back, okay? I’ll get you some water and Advil for when you wake up tomorrow.” Y/n then nods acceptingly and allows her eyes to flutter closed as he leaves the room. Despite how tired she feels, Y/n won’t quite yet let herself sleep--not ‘til Owen is beside her. When he returns he sets the ibuprofen bottle on the nightstand before uncapping the Kirkland brand water bottle he had in the fridge. He coaxes her into sitting up just one more time so she can drink some of the water before falling asleep. She sits and rubs her tired eyes as she drinks and Owen has to physically force himself to look away from the adorable sight. He just wants to take care of her forever but things have always been strictly platonic between them.
The risk of making their friendship weird or awkward was just too great.
“Goodnight kid, I’ll be right outside if you need me.” Owen leaves without awaiting a response and lets out an annoyed sigh before setting himself up on the couch in his living room. He was so focused on getting Y/n to bed safely that he forgot to grab clothes for himself. Not a big deal. He simply strips down to just his underwear and climbs underneath the thick Pottery Barn throw blanket Y/n had gifted him as a housewarming gift. That and a fire extinguisher because ‘you don’t notice its absence until you need it’ she claimed. The memory makes Owen smile and he allows his eyes to close after a long day.
A long day that was about to get longer. Owen finds himself sinking further and further into sleep until he hears the padding of footsteps that are now in his living room. He’s too tired to open his eyes, and it’s not like he doesn’t already know who it is. What does surprise him, however, is the feeling of the familiar weight squeezing between the couch and his turned back.
“What are you doing?” He half mumbles into the night.
“You’re warm.”
“That was not the question, Y/n/n.” After not receiving a reply, Owen turns as best as he can to look at his friend who’s nestling her way into his sleeping arrangement for the night. “Kid-”
“I just wanna be with you.”
“Alright,” Owen sighs out of irritation, exhaustion, and a sliver of adoration before sitting up on the couch, “Come on.”
He stands up, fully expecting to have to drag her back to the bedroom, but finds relief in seeing her struggle her way off the couch. Slipping her tired hand into his unexpecting, larger one, Y/n allows her friend to lead her into the bedroom for the second time that night.
Owen considerately lifts the covers for her to climb back into before getting into the other side of the bed.
“Owen.”
“Hm?”
“Guess what.”
“What?”
“I love you.”
“Love you, too, kid.”
“No,” Y/n speaks in a casual tone as if she’s not divulging into her biggest emotional trepidation to date. “I love you, Owen.”
Owen can’t help the way his heart seemingly stops. The way the butterflies in his stomach are going wild. The way he wants to smile like he’s the biggest lovestruck idiot on planet Earth.
She’s drunk. She doesn’t know what she’s saying. She won’t remember this tomorrow.
“I’m in love with you, Y/n.”
She won’t remember that tomorrow.

"Ice Cold", a Leon Kennedy x Reader fanfiction
As an Art and Design student all you want to do is just knuckle down and finish that one goddamn piece you've been working on for months. Too bad your time is constantly stolen by your Waiter job with minimal pay, but hey, at least the tips are good if you unbutton your shirt that one more time.

Chapter 7: The Journey
The next morning arrived as you packed the last things you thought you needed. Leon didn't actually tell you how long you would be away for, but you made sure to bring enough stuff if it was for say a week and besides you could always buy stuff while you were out there. It was the first time you ever left the country and you were really excited to go on a “vacation” with Leon, even though you knew this wasn't really one.
You didn't bother eating anything since it was still very early, the sun barely even shining yet, but it was also due to the nerves of flying. Now you were waiting for Leon to come pick you up. You couldn't even stand still while waiting so you went through and checked that you locked all of the doors, checking if everything was ready and the house to be left alone. Just as you went for another round the doorbell finally rang. Almost running your suitcase over, you went to open it. Before you stood Leon, looking just as tired as you but greeting you with a smile nevertheless. “Everything ready to go?” he asked, looking inside your home and pointing at the luggage.
You simply nodded and went to grab a backpack and another bag. “Would you mind taking the suitcase? I don't think I can hold any more stuff.” You lifted your arms showing Leon all the things you held. Leon gave you a smile and nodded and went to grab the big suitcase which stood behind you.
The two of you then went out of the apartment and you made sure to have everything you needed before locking the final door behind you. After that Leon showed you the way to the already waiting car. Next to it stood two tall men dressed in all black suits and wearing sunglasses. “Don’t worry about them, they look scarier than they are.” Leon winked at you as you continued your way. When you arrived at the big car one of the men went to grab the stuff you were carrying and put it in the car before opening the backdoor for you. You thanked him quietly as you sat down and he closed the door again. You saw Leon talking to the men before he joined you in the backseats as well. The two men then also went into the car, both sitting in front of you and Leon, one of them driving the car. “Try to get some sleep before we arrive at the airport, Buttercup. The time zone change will be hard to get used to, anyway. So try sleeping now or on the flight, alright?” You nodded and went closer to Leon to rest your head on his shoulder. He took your hand in his and you soon felt sleep take over your mind and body.
You felt a light shaking in your body before you slowly opened your eyes. By now the sun was shining and the bright light made you close your eyes again. “Hey, sleepyhead. We gotta get out, try your best to not fall asleep again otherwise you’ll be in the wrong timezone.” You heard Leon chuckle and you opened your eyes again, looking at him tired. You stretched and yawned before fixing your hair and getting ready to go. Leon already left the car and opened the door for you, making sure you wouldn't fall asleep again.
You groaned as you left the car and looked around, the area not looking like an airport at all. You looked at Leon questiongly. “I thought we were driving to an airport, Leon. Where are we? I mean, I have never been to one but this wasn't what I expected.” You motioned your hand to the area you were surrounded by. It looked like you were in the middle of nowhere, the car parking in an open area with no trees, buildings or any life in sight. All you could see was green grass and maybe some rocks. Leon scratched the back of his head. “Yea, I guess there was a change of plans. We can't fly with a normal plane. So now we have to wait for.. let's say a colleague to pick us up with a helicopter and then they’ll be taking us to a different airport. But don’t worry, Buttercup, this stuff sometimes happens. It's no big deal.”
You let out a huff and crossed your arms before your chest. “Alright, whatever you say Leon. As long as we get to Italy somehow I’m not worried.” Leon gave you a light smile before kissing your forehead.
To pass the time you pulled your phone out of your backpocket, scrolling through social media to see the latest trends online. Only a few minutes passed before you began hearing the sound of a helicopter closing in. You looked up towards the sky and you soon saw one coming from the horizon, eventually it slowly began descending down to the four of you. Leon lightly pulled you back a little bit, to make sure you wouldn't fly. Once the helicopter landed and the propellers came to a stop you were able to get in. Leon helped you get up and into it and you sat down. Afterwards Leon joined you, he gave you a pair of pilot headphones and closed the big door on his side. The two suited men also joined you, leaving their car alone in the middle of nowhere. Shortly after you all sat down in the helicopter its engine started again and you rose up to the sky. You gasped due to the sudden sensation and went to hold Leon's hand, surprised by the height you found yourself in. Leon had to laugh at your reaction but soon took you into his arms to calm you down. He wanted to say something but he thought that maybe the two bodyguards wouldn't want to hear such a dirty joke. Leon then mentioned that you should close your eyes to help with the nerves, which you then did. You still don't feel too awake so closing your eyes again, even if just for a short time, sounded like a good idea to you.
It felt like only a few minutes passed but it must have been a few hours, actually. You woke up again after feeling the helicopter landing on the ground again, shaking you awake. You slowly opened your eyes again, looking around. Leon and the others were already ready to leave, whilst you had to fully wake up first. You yawned and stretched before laying your headphones onto your seat after standing up. You then carefully jumped out of the helicopter and looked around. Leon and the men talked and also looked around in the place that finally looked like a real airport although it was still kind of small compared to what you have seen on TV. The sun was shining bright by now, heating up the area and the tarmac that you were standing on. Leon reached a hand out to you. "Come here, Buttercup. Our flight should arrive any minute now. Then we can finally get to Italy. You still wanna do this?"
"Of course I do! I can't wait any longer!" You answered Leon and looked at him excited. He gave you a smile and you put your hand in his. The two of you then walked towards the landing area, the helicopter starting again and soon leaving the place. The men followed you and Leon, both of them carrying your luggage. You didn't have to wait too long out in the sun before a small private plane arrived and stopped on the landing area. The door opened and small stairs invited you inside. Leon let you go in first, following you shortly after. The inside of the plane was very luxurious, but small. Enough for all of you but that's about it. There were two tiny tables next to the windows with some comfortable chairs in front of them. You took a seat and waited for Leon to sit down opposite of you. After he and the other men sat down the door closed again and the plane was ready for take off. "It's gonna be quite the long flight. If you wanna eat or drink anything just let me know. We got enough stuff in here." Leon winked at you and motioned to the back where the storage must be. You nodded as an answer but didn't feel like eating anything yet. You looked out of the window as the plane slowly started moving and soon rose up into the air. It was way more comfortable here than in the helicopter so you weren't as scared as before. You grabbed your backpack and got your phone, earphones and a book out of it. It wasn't much but at least you could pass some time reading or listening to music now.
After reading a few chapters of your book you decided to take a break from it. You looked at Leon who was sitting on the other side of the table, now also asleep. You smiled at him knowing he barely gets any sleep. You decided to lay your book to the side and got out your phone. You put on your earphones and scrolled through your music. Starting a random playlist you looked out the window and enjoyed the view. It was still sunny, only a few clouds in sight. After a few minutes you felt your eyes getting heavier again and soon you fell asleep once more that day.
You opened your eyes and your entire body shivered. “Leon..?” You mumbled as you sat up, you didn’t recognise where you were. Trees and brick walls were all you could see. As you hoisted yourself to your feet you felt a pain sweep through your head.
You stumbled through the grass in an attempt to figure out where you were, the last thing you remember was being on the plane with Leon.
You flinched at every sound you heard, that could be the sound of a bird or the leaves crunching under your feet.
You began to hear the sounds of an engine as you walked and you slowly made your way towards it. You peered your head around the wall and you saw a woman, she had frizzy hair and she was wearing what looked like hiking gear. She must have sensed you as she turned her head towards you. “Oh!” She waved her hand at you, signaling for you to join her. “You must be new around here, I’ve never seen you before.” She said.
You crouched down beside her at the engine. “I- uh. Where are we?”
“Oh, you’re REALLY new around here?” She chuckled, ignoring your question.
“Please, where are we?” You asked again.
“You’re… I'm not exactly sure where we are.” She replied. “But no one likes it here that’s for sure.” As she talked she was continually tampering with the engine, making it rev and spark. “Just make sure you ru-“ she was interrupted by the sound of another woman screaming. “Listen, I don’t have the answers to your questions.” She jumped onto her feet and began to walk away. “Make sure you run. Or you won’t make it out of here alive.”
You were confused on what she meant but by the time you caught up to where she ran she was gone. Unknowing on what to do you just continued with what that woman was previously doing, fiddling with the engine. You played with the wires to create sparks between them. As you did so the lights at the top of the engine began to flicker and the pumps began to speed up, eventually resulting in the engine starting up, resulting in the lights constantly staying lit.
Just as the lights began to light up you felt uneasy, your heart began to pound even though you weren't doing anything to cause it to. You looked around not seeing anything out of the ordinary, but you could hear someone running. Their footsteps got louder and louder, along with your own heartbeat. Unsure about what to do, you just started running without looking back again. It felt like your heart was about to explode as you collisioned with another person. You looked up in shock, recognizing the other person. “Leon! Oh my god, where are we? What is going on?” You asked him, completely out of breath. You looked him up and down, realizing he looked way yonger and was wearing a police uniform.
He just grabbed your arm and started running in another direction. “We don't have time to talk right now. Just go and hide somewhere safe, please.” He let go off your arm and went on running. You stood there, still confused and looked around. Your heartbeat was normal by now but you still felt weird with the whole situation. You slowly started walking around again and at some point you heard a loud bang and saw another of those generators glowing just ahead of you. You walked towards it, hoping to find Leon or the girl from earlier. But the closer you got the faster your heart was racing again. You saw someone running towards you, about your size and wearing a dark jacket. It was too late when you realized they were holding a knife in their hand and you went to turn. You were too slow and felt the knife hit your back. You let out a pained scream before continuing to run. Just when you thought you outrun them, they walked straight into you, sending you to the ground with another painful slash.
You tried crawling away but soon felt the person's grip around you, picking you up with a groan. You started wiggling and hitting them to free yourself from their grip but you failed. The next thing you felt was immense pain in your shoulder and your loud scream filled the area. You looked to your shoulder, seeing rotting metal protruding out of you. The pain was horrible as you tried to get yourself off, without success. You saw something growing around you but thankfully you couldn’t find out what it was because Leon came to pick you from the hook with ease. You groaned as you hit the ground and thanked him. “Didn’t I tell you to hide? This place is dangerous.”
You rubbed your shoulder as you looked at him. “Well, you could have told me what I was supposed to hide from, maybe then I would have! So please tell me what's going on here.”
Leon let out a sigh as he scanned the area and got out some bandages. “We don't really know what this is, but we do know that we have to repair those generators to get out. The person who hurt you is called Legion, they look really similar to us normal people so try to make sure the person you see is not holding a knife. And if they do have a knife: run as fast as you can unless you wanna end up on a hook again. If you get caught two more times you’re.. Well, dead. So try to finish the last two generators with us and get out of here.” While Leon explained the situation he also finished up your wound and you felt better instantly. “Follow me, there is a generator right around here. If we work together it will be done faster.” Leon started walking in one direction and you followed him, making sure the area was safe. The two of you then sat down at one of the generators and started working on it. Until it was finished nothing happened. You two didn't talk and just concentrated on doing your work. But just as the headlights started shining you two felt your heartbeats speeding up again. Leon looked around and then over to you. He motioned to you to go away before he too went into the dark again. Your breath was heavy and you still felt like someone was watching you even though your heartbeat normalized again. You walked around the dark area and looked for any other survivors or a generator to work on. But even after a few minutes you didn't find what you were looking for. Instead your heartbeat began fastening again as you walked by a small cabin. You went inside and looked around. There was no one in sight but your fast heartbeat still frightened you. You could soon hear footsteps outside the building and decided to hide. Thankfully you stood close to a bunch of red lockers, so you went into one quietly. You looked through the small space to make sure nobody came here to hurt you. But it was just your luck that the person who earlier stabbed you now stood in the middle of the shack and looked around. There were two other lockers, so you hoped they would not check the one you were in. The person started moving again, walking past every locker. You held your breath as they walked past yours, hoping they couldn't sense you. But they still stopped in front of it and the next thing you saw were the doors opening and the Legion grabbing you, again. You let out a surprised scream, trying to get away somehow. But there was no chance and so you found yourself on a hook again. You screamed as it pierced through your skin and looked around, hoping someone would come and rescue you. This time it was different though. The things that were forming the first time on the hook were now fully alive and trying to kill you. You used all your strength to keep it away from your body, moaning in pain and exhaustment. Just as you thought you couldn't continue to struggle anymore you felt someone picking you up from the hook. It was a different woman than the one in the beginning. She was wearing a suit and had dark hair. You thanked her as you thought about where you have seen her before. Then it hit you. “Jane? Jane Romero!”
You looked at her in surprise as she gave you a light smile. “Yep, that's me. Sorry I can't give you an autograph right now. We kinda have to get out of here and all.” You were shocked about how calm she was with the situation but followed her lead. There was no time for her to patch your wounds since you once again felt the presence of the Legion. “Go and run! I will distract them, you hear me?” Jane almost pushed you in the other direction and you started running. Your shoulder was still hurting and you couldn't hide your groans of pain. You went looking for Leon or anyone really to help you match the hole in your shoulder and get out of there. The more time passed the more panic filled your entire body. It seemed you were running in circles and no one was there with you anymore. You stopped running at some point and needed a minute to catch your breath. It felt like the whole world was spinning around you and you were brought back to reality too late. A knife found its way into your side, making you gasp. You almost fell over your own feet as you tried gaining some distance, but it was too late. Just a few meters later the knife hit you again, sending you to the ground. You remembered Leon's words about dying on the hook and panicked. You screamed for help but no one came to your rescue this time. But they couldn't have done anything to help, anyway. It was different this time. The Legion didn't come to pick you up and for a second you thought they would let you live. You tried crawling away as you suddenly felt movement behind you again. The Legion barely missed your head as they went for another stab. You turned around to guard yourself, which only ended up in your arm getting pierced. After attempting to push them away you tried to run but tripped and fell to the ground once more. You felt a deep stab in your leg as you were being pulled back to them. You turned around and screamed in agony as they stabbed you one more time, right in the chest. The last thing you felt was the knife gutting you from the chest to stomach and you gave into the darkness surrounding you, freeing you from the immense pain you were in.
You woke up, heavily breathing and covered in sweat. You looked around and pinched yourself to make sure you were actually awake this time. Realizing you were, you let out a relieved sigh. Leon was also awake by now, looking at you confused and raising an eyebrow. "Are you good? You look like you have seen a ghost." You let out a huff.
"Yea, I guess you could say that. I just had the weirdest nightmare…" You rubbed your forehead and looked outside again and then back to Leon. "What time is it? Or well, where are we now and when do we arrive?"
Leon checked his phone. "We're already flying over Italy right now. If everything continues to go so smoothly we should be at the airport in only a few minutes, maybe thirty. So you better get all your stuff and get ready for landing." Leon looked at the table. Your book and phone were laying on it, next to a plate and two glasses. Apparently Leon got hungry when you were asleep. You grabbed one of the glasses and took a big sip, exhausted from the long day and weird dream you just had. After that you put your book and earphones back into your backpack and relaxed the last few minutes in the plane.
Soon after an announcement filled the small area, reminding you to put on your seatbelts and get ready for landing. Just shortly after the announcement you felt the plane hit the ground and then slowing down to get ready to stop. After it came to a complete hold the door opened again and the stairs were ready to be used. You grabbed your stuff and got up with Leon to leave the plane. Outside stood a black car already awaiting you four. The men once again got your luggage and placed it in the car. You opened the back door and sat down, placing your backpack between your legs on the floor of the car. You let out a small sigh and then closed the door. Leon soon joined you and sat down next to you. Just shortly after the motor of the car started and you found yourselves on a highway. Even though it was just now getting dark outside you weren't tired, probably because you slept most of the day anyway. You leaned against the car window and looked outside. You always dreamt about leaving your hometown and seeing the world and Italy was always one of your biggest wishes to visit. So now that you were really here you almost couldn't believe it.
You passed multiple other cars and the scenery seemed to change every few minutes. It was either old looking towns, luxurious houses or fields filled with trees and animals. A smile rested on your face while you were mesmerized by the view. You didn't even realize that Leon was looking at you, smiling as well, until he spoke your name. You were brought back to reality and looked at him confused. “Huh? Did you say anything?” Leon let out a small laugh, shaking his head. “I just wanted to let you know that we will arrive shortly. I hope you like the hotel we got, but it seems you would be fine with anything here.” You two had to laugh about that, but Leon was right: you really liked everything here already and you were quite excited about seeing your hotel and the town.
Just moments later the car stopped in front of a building. As you left the car you let out a gasp. The building you stood before was huge and looked really extravagant and modern, but still had a touch of the typical old italian vibes. You felt an arm resting around your shoulders and looked up. “You like what you see?” Leon asked you.
For a second you were actually speechless. “I mean.. Yea! Definitely! But Leon, you could have told me it would be so luxurious.” You looked down at yourself and then at Leon. “I’m looking like some homeless person you just picked up on your way here while you´re wearing a fancy suit again.”
Leon let out a small laugh and patted your head. “You would be quite a pretty homeless person, Buttercup. I'm glad I picked you up then.” Leon winked at you before continuing to talk. “No, but really. Don’t you worry about that. At least you are wearing something comfortable. There will be more than enough moments where you have to wear something fancy again, alright? No one here will care anyway, they all have their own business to worry about.” You smiled at Leon and then nodded. It was good to be here with him and it was good to know that he supported you when feeling unsure. You grabbed his hand and soon walked into the hotel together. His bodyguards already checked in and showed you the way into your room before going into their own as well. The hallways were long and lots of decorations were on the walls. It felt like forever until you finally reached your room. Leon unlocked the door with his card and you two went inside. The room was just as big as everything else there. A big bed stood at the side next to a huge window, letting you look at the city. There was another door, probably leading to the bathroom. In the main room stood a table with four chairs, a TV with a comfortable looking sofa and more than enough other random things. You threw your backpack onto the sofa and fell into the bed backwards, now looking at the ceiling. Since the walls were so high up you almost didn't see the artwork that was carved into the ceiling. You felt the bed shifting and turned your head to the side. Leon sat down next to you and watched you. “I know you already slept a lot today but you should try to sleep now as well. It can be hard to adjust to the new time here but try your best. I have one free day tomorrow so we can look around the town and have breakfast outside this hotel if you want to.” You sat up and nodded. “Sounds like a great idea. I can't wait to see a bit of the city.” You stretched before standing up and going to your luggage. You searched for something to wear for the night and picked out an outfit for the next day, too. After that you went inside the bathroom and freshened yourself up a bit. You then headed back into bed and waited for Leon to join you.
You kept your eyes staring up at the ceiling as you attempted to go to sleep, Leon must have known that you were struggling. “You alright, Buttercup?” He asked you faintly, trying not to be loud when he was right next to you. You turned your head towards him, you didn't realise how close he was until your noses almost touched.
“I-” You struggled to find the right words. “I’m sad.” You admitted to him, earning a look of confusion from him. “I mean I'm happy for sure! But I'm sad that we’re only going to get a day together then I'm on my own for a while.”
He sighed as he sat up slightly, leaning on his arm as his body was turned towards you. His toned, muscular body, the hair that travels from the waistband of his sweatpants and then up his abs towards his chest. “Buttercup!” He waved his hand in front of your face, snapping you out of your trance. He laughed as he realised what you were staring at. “I’ll be gone for three days, Buttercup. Maybe five max…” He admitted. “Then afterwards this hot bod will be all yours.”
You let out a small laugh as you shook your head and punched him lightly. “I'm just kinda worried about you, I think. I mean, I knew what you were gonna do now, but it's different when I’m so close and yet won't be able to see or do anything with you.” You let out a small sigh as you looked into Leon's eyes.
“Don´t worry so much about me, Buttercup. Try and enjoy your time here, maybe you will even find some new friends, huh? Promise me you won't worry?”
“Promise..”
Leon seemed satisfied with that answer because he didn't say anything else about it. Instead you felt him shifting around and you chuckled at him as he climbed on top of you, kissing your face as he chuckled too, his stubble tickling you, causing you to laugh even more. He kissed you one more time before rolling to his side again. He held your hand as you saw how he closed his eyes. “Try sleeping now, alright? I don't want you to be tired when we have something planned for tomorrow.” You nodded in agreement and closed your eyes. Even though you weren't completely okay with the situation Leon was right: you should be fit for the day you have together tomorrow and try not to worry too much.

Toby - Character Analysis
Today on Aubrie ranting about her version of the creeps~
Warnings: I did not hold back on Toby, I’ve never mentioned his past on my blog and well maybe we now know why, Psychological and physical torture, Self harm, Toby has an e x t r e m e amount of mental trauma, Unhealthy coping mechanisms tied into self harm
Name: Toby Rogers
Age: 22
Height: 5′8″
Weight: 164
Sexuality: Pansexual
Links to the mentioned songs, Poltergeist, 1/4
Again, I know this gets long, but if you want to truly see and understand his character the way I do on the blog, I fully recommend reading this.
If Jeff is my most complex character, Toby is very close behind him in that aspect. You know, I agree with a lot of people on one specific point with Toby- I HATE the Toby that is just portrayed as the happy-go-lucky good boy with no issues. He has issues, he has trauma, and he is not some sweet innocent little angel. My version of Toby tends to fluctuate, at least for me, quite frequently; because of that, I decided that it's not that I keep changing his character, but that he has a very flexible and unclear personality and border.
You wouldn't be able to tell if you just read my fanfiction, but I really don't view Toby as a sweet and innocent character, but I've never written him to his true caliber because nobody requests it, and I don't think it would be as popular, thus, I'll be using this to go through the explanation of how I truly see Toby, not just as a sweet boy, but as an incredibly traumatized and difficult person.
I spent a lot of time putting this off partly because I couldn't find a song that I thought really fit Toby, but I think I found two that I believe have lyrics that mesh with him well, and I had to go back to my Vocaloid roots to find them because "real" music (by real singers) just haven't clicked for him for me.
The first song, "Poltergeist" by CircusP fits him with these lyrics:
'Living in fantasy, in apathy, isn't the cure. You're out of time'
'Every step you think you take reveals new ways to break'
'Wilted roses and trampled dreams, breathing in and out, make sure you don't lose count. Stitching thread to mend the seams, in a feeling of absolutely nothing'
'Living in agony, in tragedy is like a curse brought upon yourself, 'cuz as you're calling out and falling down, you can't be recovered, and it hurts like hell'
A large amount of the song fits him in my opinion, as Toby, as the singer states, IS the poltergeist, he is his own ghost haunting himself. Toby is fully and completely haunted by his trauma, and while he's improved a bit, his progress is extremely slow, and out of all the creeps, I think that Toby would be the slowest to recover. He is fully and completely immersed in his trauma, and it's gonna take a shit ton of work to get him out of there. He keeps himself in there, haunting himself, convincing himself he's meant to be this broken and shattered person, that it's how he's meant to live, it's repayment for everything he's done.
The second song is also by CircusP, "1/4", although I won't be picking out specific lyrics, as I feel the complete entirety of it fits him.
Toby is an incredibly sad character for me, definitely a tragic character. I've never fully written down and fleshed out my backstory for Toby or actually even told anyone that his backstory HAS differences on my blog, mostly because Toby is one of the most beloved characters, and I was worried that if I changed him too much that people would get upset or that they wouldn't like him, but I suppose if I can do it with a crowd favorite like Jeff, I can do it with Toby as well, even if it means you guys get upset at me.
If I'm being honest, I don't even remember much of the Toby OG story, nor do I care to since I don't follow canon lore, but there are a few things that are consistent from his original story and how I view him, those being that his dad was abusive and that Lyra dies. I can't remember if his mother was kind in the OG, but Toby's mom has ALWAYS been kind and caring to him in my canon, just as Lyra was a kind and caring sister to him when she was still living.
Toby's abuse probably started around the age of 5 or 6, around the time I think he started developing his Tourettes. To be clear, Toby's dad was never "nice", however, once Toby started showing signs of illness, "imperfections" as his father called them, that definitely ruined Toby in the eyes of his father. He needed his children to look and act perfect at all times, to behave and act in a certain way. Toby was put through strict schooling, had to follow strict rules, and was expected to behave perfectly at all times. However, with Tourettes, perfect behavior isn't always something that happens with his tics added in, and from all the stress he was feeling about trying to be this perfect person, Toby was never perfect, especially not in his father's eyes.
Toby's father was always a big fan of corporal punishment, and Toby was always a victim of this fact. While Toby couldn't feel the pain, it served as a reminder that he was being punished, that he had done wrong, and that he wouldn't receive any rewards or kindness until he did right. Some of the deeper scars from his father's beatings still remain on his body to this day, a constant reminder to Toby in his mind that he'll never be perfect, he'll never be the good person he was supposed to be.
When Toby's father would eventually grow bored of the physical punishments, irritated from the lack of reaction from Toby as he couldn't feel the pain, he would find other ways to bring distress to Toby. One of the best ways was to instead discipline Lyra, forcing Toby to watch, as there was nothing that affected Toby more than seeing his sister in pain, the sounds of her screams absolutely destroying the younger male, and as it was the most used form of torture by his dad due to the effect on Toby, it ended up leaving the most severe effects of trauma in Toby.
Toby was made to endure many other forms of psychological torment, including but not limited to, mock execution, sleep deprivation, forced isolation, starvation, sensory deprivation usually followed by sensory assault, and degradation. If it had even the smallest chance of leaving lasting trauma upon Toby, his father would force him into it, taking great joy in all of this. Lyra, Toby, and his mother all had to endure these things under his father's control, all of them too scared to act out and defend themselves. The three of them were a tight-knit bunch, helping each other to try and cope and take care of themselves, even if it meant taking a punishment for helping another.
The final straw that snapped Toby happened purely by accident, ironically, considering the amount of control that Toby's father normally had. His father was doing one of his punishments, a mock execution done on Lyra in front of Toby, except; instead of the gun being empty as he assumed, it happened to be loaded, and he had actually killed Lyra. Of course, he saw no problem in that, only distressed that he could no longer use her to cause Toby pain; at least, until Toby snapped to his senses, losing it, and finally fighting back against his father. At the young age of 14, Toby had finally gained the confidence he needed, leaping at his father and fighting with him until he'd gotten the gun, killing him without a second thought.
Of course, Toby and his mom panicked once she had arrived and realized what had happened, but they came up with an escape plan that, lucky for them, worked. Toby packed up a few bags, filled with food and clothes. He had decided he was going to run away, no way to trace him, and his mom was going to say she had discovered the scene and Toby had been gone by the time she'd gotten there, saying it likely happened in self defense in a domestic abuse dispute. Of course, with the wounds on her own body, it wasn't hard to buy.
All of the family's assets went to Mrs. Rogers, and she in secret continued assisting Toby as he was hunted down and searched for. Even to this day, 8 years later, she still assists him and helps him out, alongside the other creeps. However, that doesn't mean it's all sunshine and roses for Toby. In fact, he's only the happy-go-lucky boy I write him as about 30% of the time.
Toby is very damaged, the trauma having lasting effects on him. Sometimes, when he thinks he's done wrong, he punishes himself, harming himself in any way he can even though he can't feel the pain, just trying to leave a scar of some kind on his body as a reminder that he's done wrong. Slender and Tim have to be very careful when Toby does wrong, trying to bridge the gap of punishments lightly, as they don't want to scare Toby, making him think they'll punish him in the same way his father would, or sending him into an episode.
Toby is also extremely childish at times. He never had the freedom of a normal childhood, and so sometimes he acts out and gets heavily involved in "childish" things to try and relive his childhood as an adult, using some of it as one of the few healthy ways he copes. The other flip side is that he also has extreme anger issues, which is a negative in many ways. He has his father's temper, a very short one, and he can go from happy smiles to screaming in rage in a matter of seconds. This is unfortunate because he hates upsetting other people and yelling at them, and the yelling triggers his own anxiety and sensory issues, causing him to affect himself as well.
Toby is most days, however, overall very emotionally distant. He sits by himself, quiet and unspeaking, staring off into space, occasionally fidgeting or shifting position. It's best to leave him alone during these times as he either gets angry or distressed when disturbed, so the creeps will leave him be until he's ready to speak and interact with people. Toby has a lot of things to think about, a lot of things to work through, and he prefers to keep those things to himself, although he will talk about them with Slender and Tim on good days. Everyone is well aware that Toby suffered an extreme amount, although only Tim and Slender know about 80% of it, and BEN is the next closest, knowing about 50% of the trauma.
Toby has also started using collecting things as a coping mechanism, as he was never allowed to have his own things growing up. He collects pins and buttons, butterflies, books, and movies. Another way to cope he thoroughly engages in is art, the thing he most often uses to cope. He usually draws out all of the horrible memories he has and his nightmares, that being the only way to get them out of his mind, a way to make him stop fixating on them.
Toby also always does his best to stay on people’s good sides. He fears that if he messes up and does wrong that they’ll no longer show him affection or kindness, that they’ll abandon him. While Toby is extremely touch starved for love and affection, sometimes the kindness does get overwhelming to him, unfortunately. One minute he’ll be begging to be hugged, and the next the touch is too overwhelming, his touch repulsion kicking in.
I've never discussed these things before because I wasn't sure how well received it would be, but it is very refreshing to talk about it and get it out there, mostly because nobody had ever really questioned me on my past for Toby before. Current present Toby has probably only worked through about 20% of his trauma, and he knows that's not a lot, but he is working on improving. Toby is unfortunately attached to his trauma, the conditioning from his father running strongly through him even now, and it's going to take a long time before he can really escape the clutches of his father.
If I were to say the type of partner Toby needs, he definitely needs someone understanding, someone patient, someone that will stand by him. He has a lot of baggage, a lot of issues, and he needs someone that can accept him and stand by him, no matter how many times he gets angry, no matter how many night terrors and hallucinations he has, no matter how distant he may get. Patience and understanding are the biggest key points for him.
