niche nit picky thing
I Strongly Dislike when currently released medias are "hip with the times". like comics, tv shows, books, literally anything that's trying to market towards the YA audience
like I get the idea of being in with the kids, but it always comes off as insincere and lacking the genuine understanding of literally everything be it the actual 'meme culture' the writers are trying to convey to the characters and their would be usage of them themselves
not only that but it will instantly date the media and it'll feel out of style much quicker than it would otherwise
on top of all of that it feels cringy and always takes me out of the submersion of the world. Partially because the writers of it are out of touch with the actuality of it, but also because it's always written too intentionally to the point that it's overly eye catching rather than subtle and tasteful.
#not saying that this is Always the case whenever current slang is used because obviously the world around the wtiter is the world that#always bleeds into their work intentionally or not#i know from my own experience#but its one thing when that slang is actually part of that writers world versus when theyre trying to assert themselves into it to be trendy#i can clearly tell the difference between a teenage/early twenties writer using modern young slang stuff vs a mid fourties writer#its the subtly and the clash#a young writer does it naturally without thinking while and older one writes it in thinking about it#idk if that makes sense#but just stop trying to make writers write ya stuff that is up to date on all the trends and stuff and instead focus on writing good stories#and good complex characters#the slang and jokes will find their way into it naturally without the inclusion of mildly correct to dated jokes
