give that man some gd body positivity for once he deserves it
sam is FAT and as a fat guy this is important to me. hes also very clearly self hating abt it and as a fat guy whos the same way that makes me wanna cry. i lov him your honor and i hope he can recover
ps: stop drawing him skinny Please oh god it hurts.
excessively long id under the cut for those who need it
[id: a six-panel borderless comic featuring sam from sam & max, and klugpuuo's fursona, fluorite.
panel 1: sam is looking off to his side, clearly agitated but trying to mask it. he's apparently making a dry joke about his weight, or deciding to go on a diet, but isn't happy about it. behind him, fluorite stares at him, a stylized red glint on its glasses.
panel 2: now off-screen, fluorite says "sam, listen.", which apparently shocks sam into silence.
panels 3 to 4: fluorite goes on a long-winded rant. transcript:
You've been making those jokes more or less constantly, and I just wanna mention, if you WANT, PERSONALLY, to be thin, then power to you, but it really doesn't seem like it. Being fat is a completely neutral thing, dude. The only reason it's seen as bad is because like five assholes in the beauty and medical industries realized that you can make a lot of money off of people's insecurities. That's literally it. Unless you're so fat you physically cannot move and are at active risk of dying because of it, you don't have to lose weight for anyone, at all, period.
And, with these jokes, too... Like, I get it, I know how it feels. Making light of this kind of self-hating stuff makes it feel more like a joke, or it just makes it feel... better. Something shared by others instead of terrifying and awkward and alone, even if others are laughing more AT you [than with you]
But at the end of the day, all that this kinda rhetoric is gonna do for you is just make everyone around you feel uncomfortable. It's gonna feed into other's self-hatred, or in another equally bad scenario, it broadcasts your self-hatred to people who'll use it t hurt you and people you care about. Assholes who want nothing more to just bring you harm and etc.
end transcript.
panel 5: sam, looking pensive, puts a hand to his face in thought, saying "
...So, to simplify your long-winded jargon-full rant for our audience (as in, Max, who's coming back over right now),
"Being... over the average weight for a bipedal lifeform of my specific height,
Isn't inherently indicative of some form of extreme moral, mental or physical failure?"
Fluorite responds with a simple "yea" in a comedically large font.
panel 6: sam looks up, brow not furrowed in concentration, discomfort or any negative emotion, and his shoulders are slack. he simply says "huh" in wonder.

OC-tober Day 1: Journey Despite my better judgement I decided to participate in @oc-growth-and-development's OC-tober because it gave me an excuse to write a little something about a certain Half-Maormer. The fandom is The Elder Scrolls, btw. Just in case anyone stumbles over this.
Keep your head down and your cowl even more so
His mother's words echoed in his ears as he followed yet another marble street. How could those altmer distinguish any of them? They all were white and straight. All houses looked the same, too, in the thick fog that covered Sunhold like an all-smothering blanket.
In his tiny hands, he held a letter. To the apothecary, his mother had said.
But how should he find the pharmacy? He shook his head and continued down the street until he reached a crossing. There, a lonely street light broke through the foggy twilight, its rays revealing shades, ghosts of people, tall and intimidating, the first sentinels of a new day.
Eyes to the ground, he pulled the cowl deeper over his face before turning into a street so narrow and dark that he could barely see his own feet. They should not—could not—see him; he was not welcome here. His fingers were sweaty and tight around the letter. From a nearby window, disembodied voices speaking of 'morning' and 'breakfast' floated out into the fading night.
He began to jog, nearly stumbling over a stair. Onwards, ever onwards. Where could the pharmacy possibly be?
The narrow street opened up into a large plaza. Through the fog sounded hurried steps and faceless voices, the clattering of hammers and the screeching of seagulls.
He breathed in deep and tasted salt.
The harbour.
He was at the harbour again. Crushed by desperation, he crumpled the letter and sunk to his knees.
He would never find the pharmacy.
Never!
"Mama," he whimpered and drew his knees up to his chin, "Mama…"
His eyes stung with tears. He was alone. All alone. A stranger, in a strange city, in a strange land.
"Are you lost, my child?"
A gentle voice knelt down by his side. He turned away.
The scales.
He had to hide his scales.
"Can I help you?"
"The pharmacy," he blurted out, "I need to find the pharmacy."
"Ah, I can take you there," the voice chuckled, "At my age, I could just as well move into the place. I think Forelmo would mind, though."
"You know the apothecary?" He jumped to his feet and grinned at his companion: an elderly woman with weathered features and shaggy grey hair.
Her eyes grew wide.
The scales.
His scales!
He shuddered and set out to run but was held back by a withered hand and a gentle smile.
"Come, I'll bring you there."
He swallowed. Should he trust in the kindness of strangers?
He glanced around, considering the offer.
If the old woman meant him harm, he could just run away and hide in one of the many streets leading away from the plaza. Surely he could outrun her easily.
After a while, he took a deep breath, steeled himself, and nodded.
"Please, bring me to him."
She took his hand, cold and sweaty, in her soft and warm one and guided him across the plaza, down a set of marble stairs and around a corner. The pharmacy was an unassuming building; nothing but a worn-down sign showing something like a small cauldron—Pynwir, the ship—medic owned one of those!—hinted at what lay behind those dark windows.
"Forelmo may be up already," the woman said, "And if he isn't, we're going to knock him awake," she winked and proceeded to hammer at the door.
Not a moment later, it opened, revealing a disgruntled looking older altmer.
His auburn hair was tied in a messy bun and streaked with grey. Although his face bore the markings of time, his bright eyes and pronounced chin had an elegance that made him appear ageless. The shirt he wore was beige and adorned with little green vines, some of which bore leaves that had been clumsily sewn over holes and tears.
"Forelmo, good to see you up already."
"Early to bed and early to rise, so they say," Forelmo shrugged. "Talenya, if this is about your salve—" His breath caught in his throat as his eyes fell upon the cloaked little boy, whose hand Talenya was still holding.
"He was looking for you," she explained and nudged the boy's shoulder. With shaky legs, he waddled forward towards Forelmo and handed him the letter.
Forelmo wasted no time, tore the envelope in one swift motion, and began to read. Each passing moment, his eyes grew wider and wider. When he finished reading, they were as big as those of a cod and as wet as the Eltheric Ocean. His lips were quivering. He opened his mouth to speak but could utter not even a single sound. At last, he sank to his knees, arms open wide.
Of course. The eyes, the chin...
How had he not recognised it immediately?
"Papa?" The boy asked and timidly took a step towards the man who bore a striking resemblance to himself.
Forelmo nodded.
"I... I suppose I am. Forelmo. My name's Forelmo. By Phynaster, had I known—had I only known she was pregnant..." Forelmo mumbled to himself, but the boy did not listen. His heart was pounding, breaking down a dam behind his eyes.
"Papa," he cried and threw himself at Forelmo, who pulled him into a tight, warm hug.
"Oh, I—I'm so sorry," Forelmo stammered, "I don't even know your name."
"I'm Corentin," the boy sobbed and nuzzled himself into that comfortable embrace that smelled of chamomile and earth and home.

Do you think JB will end together? Like, marrying and maybe even having kids? I know it’s a lot to hope in asoiaf universe, but I so wish they would!
GRRM is aiming for a bittersweet ending. There’s even a quote from him saying that he already knows who’s going to marry who.
“I know the broad strokes, and I’ve known the broad strokes since 1991. I know who’s going to be on the Iron Throne. I know who’s gonna win some of the battles, I know the major characters, who’s gonna die and how they’re gonna die, and who’s gonna get married and all that. The major characters.” [x]
He clarified that “major characters” includes the main Lannisters. This was said in 2016, after his last asoiaf book, which means marriage is for future books. It could literally be any pairing for one of the major characters, or multiple pairings. My point is, there will be at least one marriage for the major characters that didn’t happen on the show. Personally? I think there’s going to be a couple, and whether or not Jaime and/or Brienne dies by the end, they’ll still be one of them. This is going to be kinda long…..
Brienne - Marriage
Brienne was introduced to us on an unrequited love plot line.
Brienne was on her feet as well. “Your Grace, give me but a moment to don my mail. You should not be without protection.” King Renly smiled. “If I am not safe in the heart of Lord Caswell’s castle, with my own host around me, one sword will make no matter … not even your sword, Brienne. Sit and eat. If I have need of you, I’ll send for you.” His words seemed to strike the girl harder than any blow she had taken that afternoon. “As you will, Your Grace.” Brienne sat, eyes downcast.- ACOK
Brienne dropped to her knees. “If I must part from Your Grace, grant me the honor of arming you for battle.” Catelyn heard someone snigger behind her. She loves him, poor thing, she thought sadly. She’d play his squire just to touch him, and never care how great a fool they think her. - ACOK
And what’s emphasized in her first PoV?
Renly Baratheon had been more than a king to her. She had loved him since first he came to Tarth on his leisurely lord’s progress, to mark his coming of age. - AFFC
Reciprocated love is her arc. The first time we meet her she’s described as crushing hard on Renly Baratheon, and it’s during the melee at Bitterbridge. The melee is brought up again in AFFC, during one of Brienne’s PoV chapters.
In the mělée at Bitterbridge she had sought out her suitors and battered them one by one, Farrow and Ambrose and Bushy, Mark Mullendore and Raymond Nayland and Will the Stork. She had ridden over Harry Sawyer and broken Robin Potter’s helm, giving him a nasty scar. And when the last of them had fallen, the Mother had delivered Connington to her. This time Ser Ronnet held a sword and not a rose. Every blow she dealt him was sweeter than a kiss.
Loras Tyrell had been the last to face her wroth that day. He’d never courted her, had hardly looked at her at all, but he bore three golden roses on his shield that day, and Brienne hated roses. The sight of them had given her a furious strength. She went to sleep dreaming of the fight they’d had, and of Ser Jaime fastening a rainbow cloak about her shoulders.- AFFC
Let’s look at the structure. The paragraph before Brienne falls asleep is setting up the context for the dream. Paragraph #1 is specifically referencing the men who participated in the bet as her suitors, thus connecting the mělée to an element of her dark, romantic history as Brienne knocks every asshole into the dirt with blows sweeter than a kiss.
Paragraph #2, still connected to the romance theme of paragraph #1, transitions into Brienne falling asleep and dreaming of her last fight with Loras. She then gets cloaked.
Keep in mind that in a wedding ceremony, the groom places a cloak of his house colors around the bride’s shoulders. Now, knowing a professional author is writing this, and there’s a romance theme established in paragraph #1 with the term suitors, and if we’re continuing the theme, in her dream the KG cloaking is symbolic of a wedding ceremony.
Unlike the show’s garbage interpretation of Brienne, her life-long dream has never been about becoming a member some kingsguard (also note, knight and kingsguard are not synonymous. You can become a knight without swearing your life away to a KG). This is why she joined Renly’s:
Renly Baratheon had been more than a king to her. She had loved him since first he came to Tarth on his leisurely lord’s progress, to mark his coming of age. Her father welcomed him with a feast and commanded her to attend; elsewise she would have hidden in her room like some wounded beast. She had been no older than Sansa, more afraid of sniggers than of swords. They will know about the rose, she told Lord Selwyn, they will laugh at me. But the Evenstar would not relent.
And Renly Baratheon had shown her every courtesy, as if she were a proper maid, and pretty. He even danced with her, and in his arms she’d felt and her feet had floated across the floor. Later others begged a dance of her, because of his example. From that day forth, she wanted only to be close to Lord Renly, to serve him and protect him. - AFFC
She literally fell in love with him because he treated her, “as if she were a proper maid, and pretty.” BTW, this is introduced in her first PoV, emphasizing the romance theme to her arc.
Feeling too ugly and unworthy to be a lady, and after three failed betrothals and Brienne crying “bitter tears” over Margaery marrying her king, she left Tarth and pledged her life to Renly in the form of becoming a member of his KG (hmmm joining the kingsguard to be close to someone she loves? Sounds like someone else!). Feeling like a failure as a lady and heir, she played to her more masculine traits and married Renly in the only way she could.
The KG being a form of marriage to her is shown in the dream passage as well, by how after knocking her “suitors” into the dust, she becomes a member of Renly’s KG and essentially marries him. All the suitors are disposed of, but in the end, she allows one man to cloak her.
But… in her dream, the person is no longer Renly LOL. It may be his cloak, but it’s not his face. WHO IS CLOAKING HER? Jaime fucking Lannister.
And guess what? Jaime replaces HER BETROTHED in another dream.
Finally the doors opened, and her betrothed strode into her father’s hall. She tried to greet him as she had been instructed, only to have blood come pouring from her mouth. She had bitten her tongue off as she waited. She spat it at the young knight’s feet, and saw the disgust on his face. “Brienne the Beauty,” he said in a mocking tone.
“I have seen sows more beautiful than you.” He tossed the rose in her face. As he walked away, the griffins on his cloak rippled and blurred and changed to lions. Jaime! she wanted to cry. Jaime, come back for me! But her tongue lay on the floor by the rose, drowned in blood. -AFFC
This is romantic rejection from an actual event that happened to her, and Brienne is unable to stop her betrothed (who turned into Jaime in the dream) from walking away, but GRRM LITERALLY SAID HIS INTENT WAS BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and since we were introduced to her on an unrequited love plot, with love always being a cruel joke to her, with romantic rejection and how she’s been so unworthy and undesirable as a lover smacking us in the face, RECIPROCATED LOVE IS HER ARC.
And it isn’t just love that’s part of her arc, it’s also MARRIAGE, because it has been connected to marriage.
Brienne - Motherhood
Brienne has a lot of motherly qualities in the books and has also never rejected the idea of being a mother. At one point, she daydreams about her first betrothed and wondered what her life would have been like if he survived childhood.
Had he lived, they would have been wed within a year of her first flowering, and her whole life would have been different. She would not be here now, dressed in man’s mail and carrying a sword, hunting for a dead woman’s child. More like she’d be at Nightsong, swaddling a child of her own and nursing another. It was not a new thought for Brienne. It always made her feel a little sad, but a little relieved as well. - AFFC
Yes, a part of her was relieved. I mean… duh haha. Who wouldn’t be? She was going to marry a stranger, she most likely would have been treated like dirt, she would have been young, and everything about her life would have been different. The point is, the thought still made her sad. If there wasn’t any part of her that desired marriage and motherhood, she would have only felt relief, and, well, “it was not a new thought” for her.
Keep in mind, Brienne thinks she’ll only ever be a fighter because, even though her book personality is very nurturing and motherly, she believes she’s physically unfit to be a lady and mother
“I will tell you true, Brienne. I do not know. My son may be a king, but I am no queen … only a mother who would keep her children safe, however she could.”
“I am not made to be a mother. I need to fight.” - ACOK
The next bit I wouldn’t really say this is motherhood foreshadowing, but I do still find it interesting that GRRM wanted Catelyn to have a little motherhood discussion with Brienne, when she could have spoken about it to any other character.
“Children are a battle of a different sort.” Catelyn started across the yard. “A battle without banners or warhorns, but no less fierce. Carrying a child, bringing it into the world … your mother will have told you of the pain …”
“I never knew my mother,” Brienne said. “My father had ladies … a different lady every year, but …”
“Those were no ladies,” Catelyn said. “As hard as birth can be, Brienne, what comes after is even harder. At times I feel as though I am being torn apart. Would that there were five of me, one for each child, so I might keep them all safe.” - ACOK
This next one…
Can it be? Somewhere inside our swordswench is a mother just squirming to give birth. What you really want is a sweet pink babe to suckle at your teat. - AFFC
I mean, it’s Hyle being an ass lol, but I’m not going to ignore the fact an author decided to put that in there, and it’s not the first time the autor connected Brienne to motherhood.
Also…
“A daughter.” Brienne’s eyes filled with tears. “He deserves that. A daughter who could sing to him and grace his hall and bear him grandsons. He deserves a son too, a strong and gallant son to bring honor to his name. Galladon drowned when I was four and he was eight, though, and Alysanne and Arianne died still in the cradle. I am the only child the gods let him keep. The freakish one, not fit to be a son *or* daughter.” - AFFC
She IS fit to be both! That’s the point! She bitterly thinks that, due to her insecurities. Brienne’s arc: lady, wife, mother, warrior/knight, heir. Her character exists to embrace the outwardly masculine and inwardly feminine traits, becoming it all and redefining what it means to be a lady and woman in that society.
Jaime - Marriage and Fatherhood
The narrative purpose of Barristan Selmy being released from the KG is to show that it’s possible for members to be dismissed. “A kingsguard serves for life” is mentioned THREE TIMES in ASOS, about Jaime.
“I can,” he interrupted. “And I will. There’s precedent. I’ll look in the White Book and find it, if you like. Crippled or whole, a knight of the Kingsguard serves for life.” - ASOS
“Tywin regarded Jaime as his rightful heir.”
“*Jaime* … Jaime has taken vows. The Kingsguard serve for life.” - ASOS
“I am a knight of the Kingsguard. The Lord Commander of the Kingsguard! And that’s all I mean to be!” - ASOS
I think it’s safe to assume he’s going to be removed from the KG at some point in the books (I suspected for years that Jaime would be released from the KG, so when it happened on the show… well, my thoughts on the show: here). The narrative purpose of releasing Jaime from the KG is to release him from vows, to free him up for marriage and be heir. That’s literally why Tywin wanted him to leave the KG in the first place.
Have some bitter Jaime thoughts.
That was the first time that Jaime understood. It was not his skill with sword and lance that had won him his white cloak, nor any feats of valor he’d performed against the Kingswood Brotherhood. Aerys had chosen him to spite his father, to rob Lord Tywin of his heir.
Even now, all these years later, the thought was bitter. And that day, as he’d ridden south in his new white cloak to guard an empty castle, it had been almost too much to stomach. He would have ripped the cloak off then and there if he could have, but it was too late. He had said the words whilst half the realm looked on, and a Kingsguard served for life.
Part of Jaime’s arc is to step into that role of heir. He did something stupid and out of love in his youth, and now he’s rediscovering his identity.
As for becoming a father…
Perhaps he was the monster they claimed. If the Father Above came down to offer him back his son or his hand, Jaime knew which he would choose. He had a second son, after all, and seed enough for many more. If Cersei wants another child I’ll give her one … and this time I’ll hold him, and the Others take those who do not like it. Robert was rotting in his grave, and Jaime was sick of lies.
He turned abruptly and galloped back to find Brienne. Gods know why I bother. She is the least companionable creature I’ve ever had the misfortune to meet. -ASOS
Okay okay look at this. There’s a couple of things to unpack here.
Jaime never cared for Joffrey. That’s not a secret. If he were to make a decision about choosing joffrey and his hand, it’s implied he’d choose his hand. But then he justifies this by basically saying, “because he was rotten and I have another son anyway and I can always have more children” which shows that the idea of being a father is actually something of value to him. He ACTUALLY WANTS TO FATHER- “this time I’ll hold him.” Which to me is saying that fatherhood is part of his arc, because why else would that development be thrown in there? Sure, it can be there to show he’s maturing as a character and is desiring to be a responsible parent to Tommen, but then what’s the point of throwing in the detail about MAKING MORE children? Wanting to raise them FROM BIRTH this time? And, looking at structure, notice the transition from that paragraph to the next?
Jaime was sick of lies.
He turned abruptly and galloped back to find Brienne. Gods know why I bother.
LMFAO
WHAT
Jaime thinking about producing future children and how he wants to raise his next child -> Jaime is SICK OF LIES (this is before “He’s lied to you a thousand times, and so have I” And before he finds out about the affairs btw LOL just wait Jaime you’ll be extra fed up) -> WHERE’S BRIENNE? WAIT, GODS, WHY AM I DOING THIS? THIS ISN’T FORESHADOWING SHE’S MY FUTURE OR ANYTHING
GRRM as the Gods, knowing why he bothers
Tumblr media
In AFFC, GRRM still explores this fatherhood desire, even without Cersei.
Once he found the Blackfish, he would be free to return to King’s Landing, where he belonged. My place is with my king. With my son. Would Tommen want to know that? The truth could cost the boy his throne. Would you sooner have a father or a chair, lad? Jaime wished he knew the answer. He does like stamping papers with his seal. The boy might not even believe him, to be sure. Cersei would say it was a lie. My sweet sister, the deceiver. He would need to find some way to winkle Tommen from her clutches before the boy became another Joffrey. And whilst at that, he should find the lad a new small council too. If Cersei can be put aside, Ser Kevan may agree to serve as Tommen’s Hand. - AFFC
And FOR ONE OF MY FAVORITES
Unbidden, his thoughts went to Brienne of Tarth. Stupid stubborn ugly wench. He wondered where she was. Father, give her strength. Almost a prayer … but was it the god he was invoking, the Father Above whose towering gilded likeness glimmered in the candlelight across the sept? Or was he praying to the corpse that lay before him? Does it matter? They never listened, either one. The Warrior had been Jaime’s god since he was old enough to hold a sword. Other men might be fathers, sons, husbands, but never Jaime Lannister, whose sword was as golden as his hair. He was a warrior, and that was all he would ever be. - AFFC
Jaime’s thoughts, unbidden, go to Brienne when he’s thinking of his men getting women pregnant BTW LOL, and this passage SCREAMS the fatherhood theme.
After thinking of women getting pregnant he PRAYS TO THE FATHER FOR BRIENNE. Whether it’s the god or his own father doesn’t matter. The point is, he’s making a connection to Father while praying to keep Brienne safe. And then he thinks about how the Warrior was always his god and, “other men might be fathers, sons, husbands, but never Jaime Lannister, whose sword was as golden as his hair.” WHY?! Why is that bit in there? In the same paragraph? And then end with a sentence that sounds BITTER AF about how he’ll only ever be a warrior? why the fuck did it just jump from Jaime thinking about Brienne, to praying to the father and then “LOL BUT THE WARRIOR let’s randomly talk about my identity”….?? It’s literally completely irrelevant? Unless…the author is connecting Jaime to THE FATHER for him to begin identifying with A DIFFERENT GOD because THAT’S HIS FUTURE and he’s hinting that BRIENNE IS THE ONE TO GIVE HIM THAT WHICH IS WHY HE NEEDS HER SAFE. (And of course Jaime isn’t consciously making these connections, I’m talking about the author’s foreshadowing decisions)
AGAIN
and this time I’ll hold him, and the Others take those who do not like it. Robert was rotting in his grave, and Jaime was sick of lies.
He turned abruptly and galloped back to find Brienne. Gods know why I bother.
And last but not least, the weirdest argument:
“Okay but if Brienne marries Jaime she’d be a lady and he’d make her be something she isn’t.”
This has always been a really funny argument and my favorite response to this is, “Jaime didn’t give her a valyrian steel sword to make a sandwich with it.”
Anyway, GRRM once said Brienne is Sansa with a sword. As mentioned above, Brienne never rejected her title as a lady as she does on the show. Book!Brienne ran away because she felt too ugly to be a proper lady. Her insecurities and the mockery she endured caused her to shy away from anything outwardly feminine.
Keeping in mind that Jaime and Brienne are literally designed to be BatB, imo it’s not a coincidence that Jaime and Brienne only think they’ll ever be warriors.
THEY WON’T.
They’re both going to finally experience genuine reciprocated love, fuck, get married, and maybe parent and if you strongly believe one of them has to die before the end of this then all of this will happen before that death I SAID WHAT I SAID.

What Should Be Illegal?
For most of human history there have been two sources for what was defined as illegal or prohibited behavior – religion and political power; and often the combination of the two. Whoever is in control obviously wants to stay in control so anything that threatens their power is going to be illegal. Religions can come up with a wide array of things to prohibit; some just to be different and distinctive, some to prove their power (there’s little proof of power in telling people not to do something no one wants to do in the first place), and even some because it makes sense. But this last is never the reason given – because it must be about “because I say so” (where “I” is the priest or other spokesperson for “God”, “Creator”, or whatever).
With this sort of history it is easy to see how we can get misled into believing that there needs to be an “official” (or even “unofficial”) religion of a country. At the risk of offending, let’s just say that believing “God” (by whatever name) is the source of all moral conduct codes is a cop out, an excuse for not thinking these things out on our own. That’s not to say there is no such thing as a divine being, just that ascribing the source of moral conduct for a whole society to a being one must accept on faith is really just accepting the dictates of someone who has successfully convinced you that they are the spokesperson for this ethereal being. Tying right in with the desire for simple certainty, it is easy to buy into this idea. But it doesn’t do much to develop a society that preserves the right of each person to believe as their own conscience dictates.
It’s true that most previous societies have been organized around a common religious or cultural set of beliefs, and it is also true that model has produced most of the oppression and warfare in human history. Surely there is a better way for us to live together.
A society that seeks to make possible the widest range of personal freedom of belief must limit prohibited behavior to the minimum necessary for a society to function. While the concept seems simple, the application can get complicated as the personal beliefs of some inevitably cannot imagine a world in which “x” is not prohibited. Nevertheless, a decent foundation was laid with the ideas that depriving someone of life, liberty or property without the due process of law was wrong and should be illegal. The Founding Fathers of the United States may not have fully understood the ramifications of what they were setting up by forbidding the establishment of a ‘state religion’; but most great ideas end up being grander than their creators ever imagined.
This whole idea that if we believe something we must impose it on others, has a very long history, probably as long as humans even imagined that there was anything “divine” at all. Without getting too far into a history lesson, it wasn’t until Judaism (and later Christianity) came into contact with a wider world that it really became an issue. Most of the so-called pagan religions offered myths about the creation and nature of the world, and little in the way of commandments on moral behavior. The biggest requirement of most of these other religions was providing sacrifices and donations to the priests of the various deities. So when one people with different gods took over another people they insisted that their gods get the sacrifices and the offerings. Many might regard this as a simple racket to get a free ride in society, not perhaps dissimilar to various current day charlatans charging people for cliché advice under the guise of self-help or self-development. I would agree with that comparison. The Romans had the inkling of a very brilliant idea in creating their empire. Rather than replace the conquered population’s gods with their own, they just allowed them to continue with the idea that they were just other names for the same ones the Romans knew. Their “king of the gods” was Jupiter, but if you were Greek that was the same as Zeus and if Egyptian that was Ra, and so on.
Judaism and Christianity were different in that they had a moral code of conduct. So more than just the name of the god that you provided sacrifices to was at stake. Judaism’s prohibition of images of God ends up being an intolerance for images of the other gods. It breaks with the tradition of allowing others to have their own view of who or what “god” (or “God”) is. This is precisely the attitude that we must resist if we wish to live in a free society. Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter, “…in every age the priest has been the enemy of liberty.” I believe this is precisely the point he was trying to make – that enforcement of a single religious world view inevitably must lead to a sort of tyranny over the very minds of people.
Despite these ideals and the mechanism to protect them through the separation of powers in the Constitution, things have never been quite that straight forward. If a majority of the voters imagine something should be illegal (even if just because of their religious beliefs) then it likely will become law. The only hope of striking it down was supposed to be an independent judiciary, but the undue influence of extreme partisan positions has undermined that.
Which leaves only an appeal to those voters who will still use their own minds, instead of the fear and hatred some leaders continually stir up. Imagining a world in which everyone is pretty much like us is not only easy, it’s comforting on many levels. We may never be challenged to question why we think or do things in a certain way. We can feel comfortable in the world, because it is all familiar and understood. But what if we weren’t the only kind of people, what if we weren’t the majority? Now there is a choice to make – some people will see that strict devotion to the principle of many different cultures and beliefs as the only way to safely ensure that we all remain free to believe and act as we wish, no matter which way the popularity of one belief or another goes.
Sadly, there are many others who take that scenario as the reason they should “call to arms” and suppress the other ideas. This is the key point, the desire to suppress the expression of any other view point or lifestyle. I often feel that these efforts stem from a realization that public exposure to these other people and ideas will reveal the unreasonableness of their prejudices. That is what happened for most people with the mixing of the races. And it is what should happen with other groups as well.
All too often the proponents of free speech and diversity give too much respect to these folks for “merely defending their ideals”. While free speech does mean they get to express their opinions, we should call them out for what they are – people less defending their own ideals than trying to end liberty for any who disagree with them. They aren’t patriots or defenders of “traditional American values” – they are petty little wannabe tyrants who will wave the flag at the same time they trample every principle it ever stood for. It ultimately ends up where every dictatorship does, where dissent or disagreement is called treason.
It does seem that our civics classes (and our progressives) ought to spend more time promoting the idea that our “right to swing our fists ends at the other person’s nose” as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes once said (btw he was a Republican!). For that matter, I am continually amazed that no one calls out the hypocrisy of those who call for smaller, limited government while at the same time thinking it should regulate private, personal behavior on the basis of their own personal view of morality.
The Founders of our republic were rightly suspicious of the sort of direct democracy where a majority vote of the people decided everything. It was more than just the impracticality of conducting timely polls in the 18th and early 19th century; they knew that demagogues would play to the fears of the mob and that could easily subvert the rights of the minority. Unfortunately technology and the mechanism of elections have essentially eliminated the safeguards they thought they built in by having our republic be a representative democracy – one where the majority elect representatives to handle the passing (and rejecting) of laws.
I think the only potential answer is a campaign to educate the voting public about the true nature of liberty, and the dangers (and hypocrisy) of attempting to regulate and protect a particular “culture” or set of religious beliefs. I think we need to stress the idea that even though I wouldn’t personally want to participate in or view some behaviors, the only reason to outlaw them is if it would limit my legitimate rights (as opposed to my imagined “right not to be offended”).
We have done too little to express this ideal and far too little to call out the cries for censorship and suppression of beliefs that contradict the so called “traditional” values of some of the most extreme elements of our society. In every age there are those who are more comfortable with the way things are, even if they have reservations about the rightness of them. I believe failure to call them out for this behavior is what Edmund Burke meant when he said “for evil to triumph all that is required is for good men to do nothing.”
There is another test for what should be illegal, and I think it is a relatively simple test, though not necessarily easy in practice because of people’s denial and devotion to their ideas. If the primary reason for making something illegal is a moral or ethical claim, then it should be suspect. In other words, don’t tell me that it is wrong because of your ethics or morals, tell me how it deprives someone else of their right to life, property, liberty or their own pursuit of happiness. And I don’t mean some “domino theory” of how it will undermine society. It may not be without its own gray areas, but if we exposed the religious underpinnings of the belief behind the moral code it might become more obvious that the proposed law has more to do with legislating someone’s religious beliefs than it does with protecting the liberty of others.
There is an illustrative historical example in the “blue laws” that used to exist in Texas and other southern states. Basically these laws sought to prohibit certain items from being sold on Sundays. It began as prohibiting the sale of “non-essential” items, but quickly became the farce it was always meant to be. Baby food could be sold, but not diapers. Hammers but not nails (or vice versa, I can’t remember). It was clear to all that the point of the law was to make everyone respect the idea that Sunday was “God’s day” and not just another shopping day. In order to mask the nature of what they were up to, the supporters of the blue laws said that they couldn’t sell the prohibited items on consecutive Saturday and Sundays, or Sundays and Mondays. This was supposed to make it seem less like a religious law. As people from the north moved to Texas a growing movement to repeal these laws started. The supporters tried to couch the law as protection for time off for workers, despite the fact that Federal laws already regulated pay and hours, and that the blue laws did nothing to protect workers from abusive hours in the rest of the week. In the last referendum before their abolishment, support of the blue laws was equated to support for local, family owned businesses, against national chain stores, as if the sales on one day of the week could bankrupt small locally owned businesses. But the most telling news came when the referendum abolishing the blue laws was passed. One of its most outspoken supporters got emotional and lost his phony mask of rationality. He said that they weren’t done yet, and that while they might not be able to force people to go to church, they would continue their efforts to make sure that there was little else they could do on Sunday. And so, what most of us already knew all along, was finally admitted. We don’t often get to see it so clearly, but look closely at the folks who “coincidentally” want to regulate something that just happens to mirror their religious beliefs.
I am also persuaded to be suspicious when there is gross inconsistency. On the one hand someone wants to object to regulations of businesses and their dealings with the consumer public, arguing for more limited government, but at the same time thinks the government ought to be regulating private choices because of some larger moral or alleged societal impact.
If we think about it in these terms a lot of the objections to laws and regulations are ridiculous and the regulations are necessary to protect us from the greed and short-sightedness of some people: e.g. regulations about product and workplace safety, regulations to preserve the opportunity for competition to exist in industries dominated by a few companies, and of course laws prohibiting using age, race, gender, religion, etc. as reasons to disqualify someone from employment instead of their actual capabilities. And other regulations are simply enforcing a personal belief; regulating personal medical choices (whether it’s to carry a fetus to term, or to die with dignity), who you can marry, and even personal appearance.
We simply MUST stop imagining that this country is, was or ought to be a single religious or cultural place if we are to continue to enjoy its true uniqueness in the world, as a place where people are free to believe as they will.

Do you mean kudelia could be in love with Orga? I really thought they had good chemistry at first, but then the anime seemed to keep pushing her toward mika
That’s what I call part of Okada’s style, for better or for worse, in particular it’s the part that you have to get used to and develop a taste for because frankly, at first it just feels like jagged writing and things coming out of nowhere, but upon a second watch and keeping your eyes out for easy to miss details, it stops looking as incoherent and actually starts making sense and even follows certain logic.
The thing is, thinking that romance is set in stone is a no-no. Characters develop and change as the plot progresses, especially a plot of IBO’s complexity. Take Lafter, for an example within IBO-verse. When she was first introduced, no small number of people added her to Mika’s harem because she seemed interested in him. The reality was she was Naze’s “wife” though and, from her lines, even slept with him, yet in the end she ended up developing feelings for Akihiro. An intricate route, isn’t it.
So, in my understanding, Kudelia underwent a similar process. Until Dorts, as she was gradually accumulating various knowledge and experience, she still preserved the naive teen - “otome” if you want - side about her not unlike your typical harem heroines. I even arguedthat her romance with Mika made sense up until that point (and I still think so, but only until that point). But in Dorts everything changed for her character. I doubt anyone would deny that the romantic plotline with Mika just… flatlined after that. Not only because they all got too busy, but because of how rapidly she was forced to grow up and mature in the light of her being used as a pawn to further Nobliss Gordon’s warmongering interests and the resultingdeath of Fumitan and massacre of the colony workers. She simply lost that naive side, to never reunite with it again.
It’s at that time that the nature of her crush on Mika that was always more a hero crush than it was romantic to begin with (even her attempt to console him like Fumitan did a child testifies to it) had started to change for good. At the same time, that huge forced leap in development upon Fumitan’s death equipped her with the necessary maturity to start fully appreciating the person Orga is and to see their similarities, as well as develop an understanding as fellow leaders shouldering responsibility for others and the pain of difficult choices the other was facing. That was when she started looking Orga’s way (quite literally, btw, in episode 23 and 24, for example) and when the two of them became truly equal.
There was a lot of important firsts for Kudelia with Orga. He was the first person to try to understand her in episode 3, as well as letting her hear the name he chose for his group first, he was the first to explicitly include her into Tekkadan’s family in episode 9 during their talk with McMurdo Barriston (remember her little overwhelmed “Orga…”, the only time she called him by the name?), and he was the first to acknowledge her equal standing in episode 21 with a little smile despite their dire straits. His attempt to understand her at the beginning of season 1 was nicely mirrored at the beginning of season 2 when she took her turn to make effort to understand him, too.
As sad as it is, Mika, unlike Orga, can never share or understand the ideals she fights for, her worries and burdens related to them. She grew to be too big and too mature for the Mika and Atra level anymore which invalidated the triangle to me well before Atra made an awkward move on Mika about babies and he accepted in his usual blunt and direct manner. This difference in the maturity level was especially striking with Atra since it’s Atra Kudelia spends a lot of time communicating with, with how Kudelia handled Atra’s outburst like a mature adult (despite having zero experience in romance and baby-making herself) with a well settled set of priorities and values. It just doesn’t look plausible to me at this stage that an accomplished mature person like Kudelia can be interested in Mika romantically anymore (and btw, it never once looked to me like Merribit could be interested in Orga romantically, because to my eyes her attitude was always more motherly than anything else and his of a child before an adult, and hey look, the show confirmed I wasn’t wrong in that interpretation).
Now, make no mistake: Kudelia is worried sick about Mika. But not because she’s in love with him. She cares about him greatly as family, and she’s smart enough to see that the path he’s taking leads straight to his own demise. She also understands that it’s his own will, his own choice and that there’s nothing she, or anyone (even Orga…), can do about it. Of course it would leave her feeling sad and powerless.
And so, keeping all of the above in mind, we’re back to this scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was asked in the comments, “Other possibilities? …How so?” Here’s how:
The one calling the shots in Tekkadan is obviously Orga and Orga alone, not Mika, so the one to order the break-off with her, without telling her in person at that, was also Orga.
I interpret Kudelia’s frustration here as a mixture of two:- her being hurt because Orga left her completely out of the loop even though he himself had acknowledged her all the way back in season 1 as a part of his family;- her anger at herself for failing to notice what was going on with him and where Tekkadan was headed even though she was supposed to be Tekkadan’s - and his - family and should’ve seen the signs.
Now, by way of conclusion let me say the following: this take is my own, and by no means am I forcing it on anyone. Feel free to disagree, but keep something in mind (not to sound preachy though): no matter who you ship, details, even if they’re inconvenient for your ship, should never be ignored, because you would rob yourself of the chance to fully understand the story. In this case, what constitutes obvious food for thought that shouldn’t be ignored is things like Kudelia never agreeing to Atra’s idea of farming together with Mika once her job is done, her encouraging Atra to go for Mika if she wanted, her constant WTF reactions to Atra suggesting she should pursue Mika too, and her applying the word “suki” to both Mika and Atra equally (ever since season 1 we, as the audience, are often presented these types of events from Atra’s perspective, but it doesn’t at all mean that we should take Atra’s perspective for our own as she’s a clearly biased observer/participant, that is, Atra interpreting Kudelia’s “suki” as romantic doesn’t at all mean Kudelia meant it as romantic). That’s how I myself always try to approach works that have many complex layers like Gundam IBO does.

He didn't specify if he wanted to go through insurance or pay in cash. I just want to know if i eliminated his option of paying in cash by calling my insurance. I feel bad if that's the case.

What to do about Young Driver's car insurance?
I'm 17 and currently looking at buying my first car with insurance sometime during next year. I've been looking around on a lot of price comparison sites and the cheapest I could honestly find was 3,000 a year. I even tried putting myself on my dad's insurance through them and it was still in the 3000's. I have tried with a number of cars, mainly from group 4 insurance as anything below that tends to be really new cars that boost up your premium. Ideally, I'd like to buy my friends Peugeot 306 off him which is a 1.9 diesel that is usually really cheap to insure compared to most other first cars . However since this huge insurance increase I'm finding it impossible to get prices below 3000. Does anyone know of anyone specialist insurance sites for young drivers that offer cheaper prices or does anyone have any tips for filling out the forms to lower the price? I've tried everything I possibly can but I may have missed some important thing. I just know I don't want to pay 3000 a year for a car that I'm buying for 400. I see no logic there, what so ever. I'd rather crash my car and then buy another 6 of them.""
Home-owner's Insurance Question?
Okay, maybe a stupid question, but I need help here to settle an argument. Car insurance: Progressive vs. State Farm?
I'm currently with Progressive and have been very pleased with their service: I was in an accident in August and the entire process was very smooth and took little effort on my part. I worked with one local agent, dropped my car off at the Progressive repair center where they had my rental waiting for me, and returned the rental there when I came to pick my car up. Plus I never have to wait long to talk to someone when I call. However, I'm newly married and have found we would save a considerable amount by moving my two cars to my husbands policy with State Farm as opposed to moving his car to my policy with Progressive. Please let me know what type of experiences you've had with State Farm and if you would consider their service as excellent as I have with Progressive. Even if State Farm is cheaper, it won't be worth the savings if their service is crummy. Thanks!""

What does initial debit mean in health insurance?
I got a mail for recently applying for health insurance from Blue Shield of California. It says: Your coverage (individual) is currently paid 12/12/10. Effective 01/01/11, your monthly dues/premium will automatically be debited from your account on the first of each month.Your first debit will be in the amount of $142.09 to cover the period from 12/12/10 to 02/01/11. After this initial debit, regular withdrawals of $87.00 will be made on the first of each month. Ok, so I understand I am supposed to pay $87 each month. But I don't understand the initial debit where it says I have to pay $142.09. What is that amount for? What does it mean? Why is it covering from December to February? Almost about 1 to 2 months. Is that some sort of special payment everyone has to pay for health insurance? Can someone please explain this to me? I never applied for health insurance, so I'm not familiar with how things work. Thanks.""

""What are some practical, sensible alternatives to forcing people to carry health insurance or pay a tax?""
I have a problem with paying for people who don't carry insurance, like a certain brother-in-law who works as a handy man, lives paycheck to paycheck, smokes like a chimney, and refuses to buy health insurance. He is one accident or one case of lung cancer away from passing on a huge hospital bill to the rest of us. If we remove the requirement for people to carry health insurance, what is the alternative? Would we remove the requirement for hospitals to treat anyone who either did not have insurance or could prove they could pay the full cost out of pocket? Maybe people like my brother-in-law could get a tattoo on their butt that says Dear Doctor, I gambled and lost, let me die! Or maybe we let the states deal with the issue. Then the federal government could withold Medicare/Medicaid funding from any state that didn't ensure someway, somehow that everyone has affordable healthcare available. Lets solve the problem 50 times and 50 different ways instead of once. Gee that sounds better! So yea - whats the alternative? If its such a bad thing to make people buy health insurance, then give me a GOOD, practical alternative?""

I've found the basic areas of risk covered, however i can't find price ranges anywhere and all the offices are closed when i call, except for one that said they can't do it over the phone...""

I have Blue Cross HMO, and it really hasnt worked for me. I need surgery on my knee and i've been waiting for 2 months to get it done, thanks to the fact that my insurance requires me to see a general doctor first (who makes u wait for like a month for an appt for a simple referral) then get another appointment for a specialist (wait another month) then wait 3 weeks again for an MRI, and now i have to wait another week and a half for surgery. Please, help me find a good insurance. I'm tired of this! I live in southern california if that helps. Thanks""

""Haven't been paying my car insurance, help?""
PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING Okay so long story short, my bank messed up and my car insurance didn't get paid for.. This was about 3 or 4 months ago. And then it just stopped withdrawing money from my account each month, and I figured I would just take my chances and go without insurance. I didn't cancel it or anything. I had State Farm, and I figured because I was getting a new car anyway I wouldn't bother, but getting a new car took a lot longer than than I thought and I just ended up getting one yesterday. So I got a 2000 Buick Park Avenue, it has airbags, all that. It should have a decently low insurance rate. I have gotten 1 speeding ticket, but no accidents. When I called for a quote though, through a different car insurance company, they told me it would be $230 a month. Why is it so high? Is it because I stopped paying for my State Farm Insurance?""

Is being an adult really that hard? Owning a house? Having a job? Owning a car? INSURANCE??!?
I'm only 15 but I've been looking around and now I'm just not eager or happy to be an adult. The amount of stuff that I will have to do will essentially cause flippin' hair loss! When I'm older why do I actually have to have TV license to buy a TV? Do I have to have insurance on EVRYTHING? House, car, health..like seriously why do I have to pay for something hazardous that might not even happen in my life? Is it vital to have car insurance? What if I don't have one and my car is perfectly fine? Please don't even get me started on bills! It freaks me out to know that companies just want money, money, money and wont stop at anything to get it. I heard that there's this thing where gas companies and all those other stuff essential in a house can directly take money off your credit/debit card instead of going to the post office and paying. For people who do this, is it better? It's quite scary to know that I'll be doing all this in the future.""

I'm 19 years old. I've had my license since December 2008. I've never been in an accident. The car would cost around 5000$ It's a silver 2002 Saturn Vue AWD V6 With around 100,000 miles on it. Used obviously. It would be bought with a loan from a bank, so financed. I make around 1000$ a month, working 32 hours a week. Lame work for now, but hey. I can easily pay for the insurance. I also have good credit history. Any ideas on what insurance would cost.""
