Ezekiel 3:16-6:14, Hebrews 4:1-16, Psalms 104:24-35, Proverbs 26:27

Today is the 2nd day of November welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I'm Brian it's wonderful to be here with you today as it is every day. It's my oasis just like it might be your oasis coming in around the Global Campfire and letting all the other stuff go. And when is there never not other stuff to focus or obsess on or be brought down by. But just to come in here and know that I'm not alone in here, that we are in here together and then God's word is gonna speak and wash into our hearts and lives. That…yeah…that's my oasis too. And, so I’m so grateful that we can be in this together as we take the next step forward. So, let's do that. We’re reading from the Evangelical Heritage Version this week. We began the book of Ezekiel, another book of major prophecy. And again, the major prophets aren’t major because they're more important. The major prophets are…well…they’re called the major prophets because of the volume of material in these books. And then when finish the major prophets we’ll move into the minor prophets, which it doesn't mean they’re like the minor leagues of prophets just hoping one day the be called up to the big game. It's just…they’re shorter, more direct, or focused. And, so, we will get there when we get there, but we are here at the beginning of a new month and the beginning of the week or at least the beginning of the workweek. And, so, let's dive in. Ezekiel chapter 3 verse 16 through 6 verse 14.

Commentary:

Okay. So, in the book of Hebrews today we encountered a very, very, very famous passage of Scripture. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to the point of dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow, being able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.” This is a scripture so famous that we may have committed to memory, but have you…have you ever thought about what kind of instrument we are talking about when we are talking about how deep the Scriptures can penetrate? I mean, so like many of you have medical backgrounds, many of you have psychology backgrounds. Like what scalpel, what tool, what can go that deep? And even if we said we could go that deep, maybe not with a scalpel because how would we even find where soul and spirit divide? But if we could approach that in some way, in some kind of psychological capacity, like how long would it take to get there, to the essence, to the core of the true self? This is the claim that the author of Hebrews is making about the word of God. And we just talked about like, where do soul and spirit meet? Where would that be? How do you even find that place? Well…if the soul, as many believe is the seed of consciousness, like the awareness that you are you. And if it encompasses our emotional nature and our moral convictions. And if the spirit is…is what makes us alive, if it is the source of life, it is God within animating life itself then we’re talking about...I think we’re talking about as deep as you can talk about. Like this is at the level of consciousness. This is at the level of our instincts. This is at the level of…of love and feeling and emotion and conviction. This is where we make choices. This is where we decide what our bodies are going to do and then our bodies go and do those things that we've decided that they're going to do, whether they’re good things or bad things. According to Hebrews this is how deep the word of God can penetrate. So, it just…it cuts through all the crap that we invent to cope and it cuts through all of the façade of personality that we create to have some sort of place in this world and to cope and move around. And it goes below, beneath, under all of the wounding of our lives, all of the things that have pulled us into isolation. It gets under or behind all of that to a place that's true and speaks there. It speaks truth there. That's why we’re showing up here every day. I mean that's why we come around this Global Campfire because the word of God speaks deep things into our deepest truest self and over time, that changes things. We might call this transformation. We might call this sanctification, if we want to be all theological. But what's happening is that we’re being changed. Our identity is coming into alignment with the nature of our Father as we have been adopted into His family as His sons and daughters. And according to Hebrews, the Scriptures guide that process. What a joy.

Prayer:

Father what a…what a relief. Thank You for this gift. Thank You for giving this to us. Thank You for every day bringing Your word into our lives in a way that we need coming at us from every angle. And we’ve spent a year in Your word, and You have come at us from every angle, encouraging and rebuking us in ways that we simply can't hide because You’re touching every aspect of our lives. And, so, we are grateful for that and we are deeply committed to finishing this year well as we move forward into all that You have yet to speak to us. We’re hearing loud and clear. It's been a disruptive year and it's been very, very difficult on many levels but such a reset on so many fundamental levels in so many primary ways. You have done the hard work of inviting us into starting over in a lot of ways, and we are thankful for that and we look forward to all that You have yet to speak, not only in the days and weeks ahead of this year, but for the rest of our lives. So, we are thankful for Your word and we are thankful that it is something that can get to the core beyond our own deception of even ourselves, it can get the core. And, so, we commit ourselves to continuing the relationship that we have with the Scriptures, allowing it to speak to us each day. Come Holy Spirit we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

From the moment that you speak out your prayer request to the moment that you realize that God is holding you and this fellowship is praying for you, it is phenomenal what God is doing because I have experienced an amazing, amazing transformation in so many ways. And, so, let me just say thank you. I can’t even go into everything that has happened in detail and I won’t. First of all, let me say you are all loved. How does my daddy love me? With all his heart no matter what I do forever and always. I borrowed that from a pastor. I have been experiencing ADHD in a big way. My conscious mind always processes…only processes 40 bits per second but my subconscious processes 40 million bits per second. It’s scary. My mouth won’t say what my head wants…my head needs to say. I just want you all to know that you are loved.

Brian I’m so thankful that you called in and you shared your heart with us about your wife being unfaithful. And you are so right. You can’t do this alone. Many of us have been where you are in some form of betrayal in our marriage one way or another and I just want to encourage you. I want you to know I’m going to be praying for you and your wife for a long time. As many of us have experienced healing in our marriages, we know that it’s possible for you. We thank You that we all come to the foot of the cross, needing forgiveness restoration healing, places in our lives that have been broken. Hello DABbers. Just reaching out to say hello and follow up with another thanks. I’m just thankful for all of you, thankful that Kingdom Seeker Daniel has a great idea for the month of November and that’s for everyone just to call in thanks. I mean I could go on and on and it’s just crazy but, you know, we have so much to be thankful for every day no matter what’s going on, like just whose we are, God, all that He’s done. We could just go on and on about all He’s done. And then, all that He’s doing and then all that He will do. It’s just…to focus our mind on those things and just praise Him, I want to do that. The 5 Most Loved and Hated Ghosts in Anime

The 5th and Final article in our 5-Part Halloween-themed October series! Last week we took measure of the fan favorite creature of the night, Vampires, and now, we’ll be looking at the dearly departed that just won't… depart. Lost souls, vengeful spirits, or helpful phantoms, these characters possess varied viscosity and ability to be seen but are always important to the story.

Loved them or hate them, you might just see them off if you can discover the mystery of their death. Our friends over at Anime-Planet spend day and night cataloguing unique features and leaving it to the fans to vote on the best and worst. A note before we begin, these are the result of popular votes that I can and will disagree with. Only your democratic will can determine who makes it on this list. With that out of the way, below are the 5 most loved and most hated ghosts in anime!

5. Yuuko Kanoe - Dusk Maiden of Amnesia

Starting off nice and tragic here with the amnesiac ghost trying to get her memories back and, in doing so, maybe discover what’s keeping her in this world. Always thought the idea of a boy meeting a girl’s ghost and the two solving the mystery of her death was a unique story until I realized it was an entire subgenre of anime. A perfectly likeable phantom. While she’s the cause of many of her school’s ghost stories, it’s more an accident than any ill-intent. Yuuko does have sort of a scary face though. Spooky until you get to know her.

4. Kazuma - Noragami

It’s one thing to be the last survivor of your clan, it’s another to be the last survivor of your clan of ghosts. Can’t even take solace in the fact that you still have a life to live. Kazuma’s got it rough, is what I’m trying to say. Always thought this guy looked like Yukio Okumura and, thanks to this article, just discovered they actually have the same voice actor, which is a roundabout way of saying absolutely not spooky at all.

3. Yami Yugi - Yu-Gi-Oh!

Hell yeah. I mean, you know certain characters are ghosts, but you just don’t expect them to show up in the list. Yami Yugi is living the dream of all pharaohs by surviving death, though I’m not sure many would be satisfied with getting locked in a necklace so they could play card games for the rest of eternity. If you do what you love, you never work a day of your death. Great ghost, although only spooky if you just challenged a spiky-haired kid to a duel and he pulls out the millenium puzzle.

2. Meiko Honma - Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

This was inevitable. Menma was a shoe-in for the most loved ghosts. It’s not just any phantom that haunts you to help you get over their death, rebuild your relationships with your old friends, and overcome your mental blocks that prevent you from expressing your emotions. The driving force in one of the most evocative anime of all time and maybe one of the most easily recognizable characters in the medium. Menma is good. Not at all spooky.

1. Yukine - Noragami

A very tragic boy. Although he doesn’t remember much, he had a hard life that was cut short, leaving him with an afterlife of yearning to experience a normal childhood. He’s usually the kind of brat I’d find annoying but Noragami found a nice balance and gradual improvement as he finds a place for himself in… whatever you’d call his existence? On the plus side, he can turn into katana(s). Not spooky unless you have a severe phobia of sharp things.

5. Aerith Gainsborough - Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

What the hell. How could you do this to me? Here I am, writing a listicle for your entertainment and you’ve gotta hit me with the most traumatic moment of my childhood? I’m completely blindsided by this. I can’t handle it. The worst part is, I can’t even say this isn’t an anime. Wait, she’s HATED? This is some vote brigading nonsense from Tifa fans, 100%. We’re moving on. I’m so angry. NOT spooky. Very sad.

4. Fuyumi Yanagi - Blood Lad

Blood Lad never fails to show up with the horror rep, although I’m surprised to see Fuyumi on the hated side here. She’s just a normal girl that basically ends up in the wrong neighborhood and gets killed by a horrible plant monster then spends the rest of the series trying to not only cope with the fact that she’s a ghost, but that all sorts of nasty horror movie creatures exist, and her potential savior is kind of a creep. Must be some sparse competition in this hated section. Not spooky.

3. Daemon Spade - Reborn!

Not many major villains have the advantage of already being dead. While that makes Daemon tough to deal with, I’m not sure if I could really say much about him besides that. Always struck me as your typical revenge-obsessed nihilistic villain.. until his move with Mukuro, that is. Probably a lot of Mukuro fans present for this hate vote and I respect that. First hate vote I’m on board with of the hated to have any real scariness to them. Possession isn’t cool.

2. Kugaha - Noragami

Any enemy of Bishamonten is an enemy of mine, so drop this dude anywhere you like on the hated list. He’s basically the “I know what’s better for you more than you do” kind of boyfriend and I think that’s pretty much canonically his villainous motivation in the series. So yeah, basically he sucks. Only spooky if you’re in a relationship with him.

1. Nora - Noragami

Dang usually the most hated is pretty cut and dry but Nora’s kind of complex situation. On the face of things she definitely deserves the hate. Trying to kill anyone who your crush spends more than 2 seconds with is a bad look. In retrospect, it’s hard to know how much of that was dear ol’ dad. Looks like a kid, but she’s definitely got her creepy moments and is scary in the way just about any homicidal stalker is, so there’s that at least.

I’m just gonna say this. If you have a ghost list that includes Yami Yugi but not Fujiwara no Sai from Hikaru no Go, it’s pretty much a failure. Also, the absence of Dimple from every list involving dead, deathless, or psychic characters is becoming an unfortunate pattern. I’ve got no problem with Noragami taking this list over, but please include some of the greats.

I can’t believe you hit me with Aerith…

Hey, just dropping by to ask how life has been lately -- how are you holding up? It seems like you've been kinda better nowadays but I wanna make sure. So how have you been? Is there anything special you wanna talk about, whether it's good or not?

You know... anon. This is probably one of the more heartwarming asks I’ve gotten in a while. Unprovoked, earnest want to hear how the person behind the blog - past SNK - is doing. Like a request to hear more of the “personal” tagged posts I make. That’s just so touching to me. I have the feeling that people who are interested in me, are so at least partially because I have a connection to SNK; that if I dropped out of the fandom, I’d be an instant unfollow (not that there’s anything wrong with that - but there’s something special about feeling like someone cares past their own interests - “forget about SNK, I just wanna hear how you’re doing” JPHA anyone?) So thank you. When I saw this yesterday, I had the instant thought that it was probably from my best friend, and the only reason I cast that idea aside, is because he could just ask me on messenger haha. Anyways! Anon, I will tell you how I’ve been doing! Someone asks me “how are you”, and I’m just jumping right in and replying honestly, haha! (Under the cut, because this will be long; life updates are usually long, ya know)↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓

You’re right, I’m really good! This time, last year, I had just made a suicide pact with myself; I was so exhausted I was done fighting for myself. I said “someone’s gotta help me. But if nobody does, or nothing has changed within the time SNK is over, I’m calling it quits and offing myself”. And I meant it. I’ve had so many hard periods like that, and I’m running out of lives. I thought “next time will be game over”. That pact does NOT still stand. But it did for the better part of 2017. I can’t remember when it changed. Oh, wait, I do: the moment I gave myself the out, I felt so much relief washing over me. Not having to worry about the pathetic failure future I had ahead of me, not having to worry about the education I was too sick to complete, having to acquire a house without the means somehow... All worries about the future were lifted off me. And I had an out. It probably sounds really strange, but as soon as I’d decided to die (unless life worked itself out, aka win-win/good life - escape from bad life), life felt more bearable. I was still having a bad depressive period, so I was still not good, but I guess the pact nullified all the stress and anxiety connected to the future. When I accepted having none at all, anything else started feeling like a pluss once I decided not to die after all. The problem with “someone else has to fight for me”, though, is that apart from my parents (who can’t really do much since this is internal and they aren’t professionals - although boy did they try, bless) nobody did. I mean, I have you guys to love me, but in my every day life, who could fix me? Coincidentally, in this very same time frame, I was suddenly rejected further help from the mental health organ and I just... had no choice but to fight harder than ever just to get the amount of help I’d gotten before. It’s a big messy ordeal that took almost a year to fix. Complaints to file, waiting, more waiting, more stops to visit, etc... Basically, my notion of “being too exhausted to lift another finger for myself” was tested, and thanks to pure outrage, I was able to fight to win my right to help back. I’ve talked about it before so I won’t repeat that stuff. But the fact is, once the heaviest darkness lifted (I have recurring depression, so it just comes and goes in waves) towards the end of 2017, I carried with me an exercised ability to fight that I didn’t have going into the year. And at some point,... I don’t know how, but I was just so strongly set on fighting, fighting, fighting. I think about Armin and how he never stopped moving. He had his moments of weakness, where he thought he had no more to give, but at the end of the day, he’d be further along than when the sun rose. And I was doing the same. Because my roomie was moving at the start of 2018, I had to start thinking of how to move forward as well. I’d grown complacent in the apartment we rented together, but with him, it was too comfortable just to stay in that place mentally and in life. Just in time, I had a rude awakening to the fact that I also depended too much on other people. They were my pillars, and if they crumbled, I didn’t hold on my own. *sigh* Basically, I learned a lot in 2017, and grew a lot. At the very end - thankfully after the depression was over - I had to do a sudden crash course in how to find my own legs to stand on again, and how to close off my heart so it wasn’t so vulnerable. I went through the ice king stage of thinking I’d never let myself care about anyone else again, but I’ve found a good middle ground where I’m able to care about others but also not needing them to care about me back. This is all a long story that I don’t care to tell because it’s trivial, but also still affects me actually. But I grew a lot on it, so I’m thankful for the experience.

The TL;DR of 2017 is that after deciding I was too exhausted to fight anymore, fate forced me to fight harder than ever, and I learned a lot thanks to perfectly timed challenges, ultimately allowing me to enter 2018 a stronger person. The turning point was still the 7th of December: my tattoo. It’s of Armin’s name, for those that didn’t know (I posted it here so just search “tattoo” on my blog if you wanna see). I’d wanted to tattoo his name on my arm for quite some time, but I was scared. Because I knew that if I had his name on my arm, I could never dishonor him by killing myself. Having the tattoo would thus be my official declaration of giving up suicide as an option (ever!). Now, that’s a scary thought to someone who lives off the relief that having an opt out gives... But as time went on, and the warrior spirit had found a home in my heart, I slowly turned from fearing it, to needing it. Eventually, I called my dad and basically said “I need an appointment asap”, and he hooked me up with his tattoo artist friend. The idea came to me when I realized that despite any kind of depression, whenever I thought about Armin, any other feeling would be forgotten for a moment, as I was reminded of the love I feel for him, the motivation he gives me, and so many more good feelings. Thinking about him basically causes an explosion of warm complex joy within my chest. It spreads through my body and I always smile. So my thesis was that if I tattooed his name on my arm, and I hold my phone in my hand 24/7, I’d see his name all throughout the day, every day, and thus my depression would be repelled by this overwrite happiness all! the! time! And, anon? Thesis turned law; it works! It’s gonna be 4 months since the tattoo now, and I’ve only felt suicidal 3 days since then - and although I cal tell my body is ready to head into another depressive period, I’e managed to fight it back 4 times (4 attacks that all lasted about a week, but in the end, I managed to fight it off). It’s like I’m a werewolf, and every once in a while, the full moon is back and I struggle to stay human - and I’m managing, much thanks to a new sigil on my skin, keeping the beast caged.

Now, it would be a lie to say that the tattoo is the only reason, though: in wake of my change, and with this new intense fighting spirit, I also made a resolution to try something new: refuse to be sad. You know how people say smiling will trick the brain to think you’re happy? It sounds stupid as hell, but I finally decided that you know what?, it doesn't hurt to try. I’m gonna insist that I’m happy, even if my brain says otherwise. Fake it till you make it. And it’s working - a little wavering included, but who isn’t sad from time to time? Because my capacity to do things has been gravely weakened, though, I’m on semi-welfare now, though. It’s a kind of welfare where they haven’t accepted your application for welfare yet and you get like a tiny allowance every other week to live off of instead (not meant for a permanent basis, as it’s not nearly enough - usually given to people who are between jobs for a month or two, just to get by). I don’t have the money to buy a house, but I’ve been moving for so many consecutive years that it’s jeopardizing my mental health so I’m trying something new: I moved back with my parents, and I’m currently trying to figure out what the next step is. I want to get a house somehow, so I have a permanent base to grow off of. I know that will take a lot stress off me to focus my tiny quota of strength on something else (like figuring out what to do about education/work). But since I don’t have the means, I can’t get a regular type of loan. There is a special kind you can get if you’re on welfare, so I’m currently applying for welfare, but to apply, I need to do a lot of tests to show where my ability level lies, but I’m not able to do them so I need to get papers from doctors to confirm that. I had already “proven myself” but then I lost my psychologist, case worker and house doctor all at once, so I have to spend about a year extra to re-prove myself. And then I can apply if they say I can apply, and then I have to wait for a yes or a no, and then work from there... So you see, right now, my fate is in others’ hands. I’m basically in a limbo of waiting, then doing some sort of meeting, then waiting for it to process, so I can meet someone else and wait again. I’m currently waiting for my caseworker to answer to request to meet her so I can ask how my case is coming alone since i haven’t heard from them in over a month... It’s quite... frustrating. But I’m a professional when it comes to dealing with these things, since I’m over a decade deep in this sh-.

In the meantime, though! I am working hard to keep my mental stability in check! And I’m doing that by setting monthly goals, and starting every day with breakfast and writing down daily goals! It helps me structure my days and I’ve gotten so much done this way! It’s helping me in all sorts of ways! And although I don’t have a lot of material things to boast with, I feel more successful now than I ever have, because I’ve done another huge leap in personal growth and I’m growing more and more apt to tackle life. Just wait. I might not have a lot now, but when we do tally in twenty years from now, I’ll have the earthly goods that my peers have, and a more developed psyche on top of that! I’m on the path to finding true happiness, and that’s so much more important than following the highway to wealth.

Ah, sorry for how long this got... But yeah... I have a lot of small joys every day that I’d like to share. My journey is really making me happy. But I’m afraid I’m just boring or annoying people. I get the occasional “write what you want” ask, but I can’t shake the feeling anyways. I’m working on getting better at sharing, though. Thank you for giving me the push to write this. I do not know my mind and heart as separated. I know myself, through a glass, darkly. Physician, heal thyself, applies to me, although I’m a mere social worker.

Today I am all about metaphors and clichés.

I have been about healing myself since I sought out psychotherapy in the 10th grade: I was the first self-referred adolescent anyone could remember at that public clinic in DC. I have been healing the betrayal of a limited and dangerous faith, Christian Science, since that morning I discovered that my grandmother was cold and stiff in her bed at the age of 65, dead from preventable causes. I went on to school that day, after telling my little sister to go tell Mom that Nana had died. I was 15. It was that year, 1975, that I called Bullshit on how I’d been raised. I started in earnest to separate the wheat of the many gifts and legacies I was given, from the chaff of illness, limitation, cruelty, which grew up right alongside.

Apparently, it’s a lifetime pursuit.

One thing about moving to so radically different a physical location (DC to Paisley) is that the usual thoughts and routines were stripped from my consciousness and I was plopped down as if by helicopter into a new world. I’m still learning where I am, physically. I’m still discerning the subtleties of Eastern Oregon etiquette. I am not known, yet, not very deeply, so I have settled into a now familiar loneliness. Nevermind “Question Authority”. I question everything. What I knew Before, without thinking a whole lot about it, floods in and fills up the spaces that had been stripped by the new environment, flooding in like the water does after an underwater earthquake. Past memories pull away, so strangely. And then flood back in a tsunami.

Which is why what I’ve been writing since I got to the Oregon Outback feels like memoir. My awareness is filled with the Before, alternating with The Brand New. It makes my brain full to overflowing. Some evenings, I go to bed at 7pm. I dream of cities.

For the past month or more, I have felt tears very close to the surface, multiple times a day, and they spill over if I let them.

Because…

· I have been living in this skin for almost six decades

· I am well trained and broadly experienced as a clinical social worker for three decades

· And I am familiar enough with my own experience as a client in psychotherapy…

I know that something is up. I am living in the midst of not knowing what it is. Which I can actually tolerate, although I do so hate crying at the beginning of a work day because part of my brain is just mush after that.

I had a big cry at the beginning of a work day recently. I noticed later in the day, that I was looser and more open with my clients, a bit braver with my questions of them, a bit more tuned in. I also had to monitor myself in a different way that the usual self-monitoring. I had to see if my inner turmoil was skewing the session, more than usual. A big part of being a psychotherapist is working to keep my shit from contaminating their shit. Or maybe I could pick a nicer metaphor. How about I keep my water colors inside myself, and let them paint their own picture with their water colors.

A recent Sunday morning’s tears came from the embarrassment and frustration of psyching myself up to go to the Catholic Church up the hill from my house for the first time here in Paisley, dressing up just a bit for the occasion, only to find that once again I have miscounted which Sunday it is. This parish meets 1st and 3rd Sundays. And it was Fourth Sunday. Dammit.

I deeply hunger for church. I feel guilty for feeling so needy about the comfort of church. The Episcopal Book of Common Prayer puts it this way: “Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal.”

I hunger for all of it: solace, strength, pardon, AND renewal.

Valerie and I are beginning to be recognized at the Episcopal Church in Bend because we’ve been there more than once, and we are greeted with smiles of recognition. I’ve enjoyed the Episcopal flavor of Eucharist in Coos Bay, Reno, Nevada, Eugene, Salem, and Lakeview, who’s parishioners you can count on two hands. I’ve hung with the Lutherans, Quakers and the UUs in Klamath Falls and the Methodists in Fort Klamath.

I went to Paisley Community Church the weekend before my attempted Catholic crashing, for the first time in 4 months. It is such a lovely building, with the big bell that gets rung by a child at 9:30am every Sunday. I see familiar faces and they smile back at me. By now, I know half the congregation by name. I hear prayers and concerns, announcements. We sing songs with the words projected stage left from the altar, and some of them I recognize. How Great Thou Art made an appearance. Not a favorite, but I knew it.

What killed me was the sermon. It was preached in what Valerie explained to me is a typical evangelical style, not planned out, but extemporaneous, so the “Holy Spirit” can edge in there. How I received it was, well, negatively. I was not tuned into his channel. Especially when I hear the name Jezebel, and talk of watching out for the Devil, after weeks of #Metoo, as millions of women reveal they, too, have been sexually harassed or assaulted. I was not having it.

I’d much rather watch out for God than the Devil. I do not go to church to find God but to share God, as Alice Walker points out In the Color Purple. I couldn’t share. The sermon was a sincerely delivered, garbled mess, as far as I could discern. It left me bereft.

What I hunger for is a story. Tell me a story.

I also hunger for familiarity, because familiarity triggers the epic mystery of ritual. After 40 years of the Collect for Purity, I weep from the missing of it:

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I feel better just reading this aloud.

I am trying to remain as open as I can to the spiritual gift of new challenges, including evangelical preaching. Among my questions: how to remain open without pulling a muscle? I seek spiritual nourishment and I am starving. I’m going to seek out the Catholics. At least the liturgy is familiar.

I’m met with a brand spanking new psychotherapist for the first time in October, in Bend. I’ve decided that a monthly, rigorous archeological expedition of my psyche would be good. I miss my former therapist, The Wizard, who never failed to leave me feeling better and more functional after 50 minutes with her. But the three phone calls we’ve had since my move west are just not enough. I need the in-person three-dimensional interaction.

It always feels a little scary to see a new therapist. I can relate even better to my clients’ experience when they first see me: they must wonder who the hell this woman is who wants to know such personal stuff. I was going to be picky in selecting a new therapist, and I asked for recommendations. Then I checked what’s covered by my insurance, and looked to see if LGBT is on their list of interests. Not that being queer is an issue for me now, but I so don’t want it to be an issue for my therapist because if it is, her water colors will most definitely smear into mine. I don’t have time for that. Seriously. You don’t have to know much about what it is like to be gay, but I do not want to sense on any level that you think it is a bad thing, some sort of disability, something freakish. I mean, I’ve gone through a spell of crying daily, for god/ess’ sake. Your homophobia will not help me.

Turns out there is such demand and so few therapists that I had to get on several waiting lists. Finally, this one gal called me back. I saw her for 80 minutes on a Wednesday on the way to a training in Portland. I like her. She seems smart, kind, experienced. I impressed her; I was trying to. I want her to like me, so that when she hears the stories of my ruined parts, she will hold them in context. I will see her once a month.

“Failure” sounds harsh, but it is inevitable that a mother fails her child because it is impossible to meet every need, in fact it is not a good thing to have every need met. However, there is a basic minimum, the Good Enough, and my mother could not meet it. Although she did the best she could.

My sister and I both survived our mother, and when we look back to our ancestors, we’ve concluded that we are pretty darn high functioning, given the heritage.

I do wonder at the trauma my clients have survived, and how lucky I was. Of the highest possible score of ten in the test, “Adverse Childhood Experiences,” most of my clients score a 5 or more. I do realize that having a troubled childhood is not a competitive sport: I must deal with what I was dealt and take responsibility from there. Perhaps an early step of self-care is this acknowledgement, and the beginning of healthy self-soothing.

Unhealthy self-soothing is rampant: for me it’s over eating and over spending. I don’t feel that there is ENOUGH for me. I need MORE. And yet I have plenty.

Depression and anxiety are the default positions, but not my fate. It’s like diabetes: it cannot be cured, but it can be managed.

I do realize how much I use the word HUNGER as a metaphor. Or maybe it is reality. We can hunger for love.

The triumvirate of healing for me is, talk therapy, psychotropics, and self-awareness. Oh and church.

After finding a therapist, I also saw my family nurse practitioner. I did not intend to go in there looking for a new antidepressant, but as we discussed my chronic illnesses, and my discouragement, I cried pretty much the entire time. Tears have a way of sending up an emergency flare, don’t they? Within the hour, I had a new antidepressant. It is my third one. Prior to starting each of the three, I had daily crying jags that I could not stop.

The very next day: no tears. Either I’d cried myself out, or the subtle shift of chemicals stopped up the leaky tearducts. Either way, I’m grateful. New psychotropics? Check.

Self-awareness is risky because it can fall so easily into self-absorption or self-pity. The worst is self-delusion. Tell the truth to yourself, if to nobody else. Sometimes, when I am in a darker place, it has meant that too much is going on at one time and I am simply overwhelmed because of stressors that are not my fault. What got me into therapy with The Wizard back in 1999 was what we both eventually referred to as an emotional multi-car pile-up. Many external stressors were wearing me down and my internal leaning is to anxiety and self-doubt. I leaned so far, I fell over.

Is that’s what’s going on now?

Some very old emotional stuff got stirred up in September. My ongoing and mostly unsuccessful struggle with pancreatitis makes me feel bad and is wearing. My work is challenging and it’s not just the pain of the clients I see. I am deeply disappointed in my failure to get my shit together in one important area (that would be my finances) and the self-beration is corrosive, not to mention the stressor of the consequences (poverty). Wouldn’t it just be easier to change my behavior instead of berating myself for behaving in the old, familiar ways?

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Behavior change is not easy. Insight helps but it is not enough.

Like many people, part of my sadness comes from the dying of the light, as fall turns to winter in the northern hemisphere. I share this with millions. (It’s called Seasonal Affective Disorder.)

I listened recently to a podcast on managing money called Bad With Money. The host is a ‘creative’ who happens to have bipolar disorder. Her guest on that episode also had bipolar, and she spoke about spending money wildly when she’s manic. She’s built in some safeguards in her life to prevent her from doing this. She also has friends give her feedback if she’s getting too ‘weird.’ How wonderful is that. People who gently say, hon, I think you’re getting a little wound up here…And this creative woman can say, oh shit, thanks for pointing this out! And she goes into radical self-care mode, and maybe adjusts her medications.

Yeah, it would be helpful to have friends like that. My gentle, totally unneurotic partner picks up a number of my craziness clues. Mostly, I observe myself. I am the turd around which the world revolves, after all. (Once again, Anne Lamott.)

Ever heard of Maria Bamford? She has struggled with OCD, bipolar disorder and a bunch of other things, and she is on top of all of that, mostly through ‘better living through chemistry’, which is to say she finally found the right drug for her. Depakote, as it turns out. She is an actress and comedian and quite wonderful. She has had to spend her entire adult life figuring out how to survive (literally, to not kill herself) and then, finally, thrive. It is hard work! She is well worth watching to see how she does the thriving thing: her art is standup comedy. An inspiration for wee neurotic me.

So.

I am aware that something is a bit more stirred up, a bit looser, a bit more aware of the echo of old pain, than usual. I am not sure what to do with this awareness beyond what I am doing, which is, a bit of bibliotherapy (writing about it), seeking out a new therapist on this side of the continental divide (done), switching antidepressants (done), and looking for church (ongoing.) I am also lucky to be going on a weeklong retreat that my incredibly loving and generous only sibling is paying for, in mid-November. I will have the luxury to concentrate on me and only me for a bit. (Warning: the following is metaphor frappe.) I go in the hope the part of me that is the observing ego can revisit some old tender places, cast an eye, and an ear, to listen to the echo of the old pain, and practice self-healing, self-forgiveness, to be whole for a minute, to allow the pain to wash over me. I would like to orchestrate the old pain, the long ago deprivation, into a cleansing bath, like the conductor does in the video I’m of late obsessed with: a concert in Verona Italy, with Peter Gabriel singing a haunting version of David Bowie’s Heroes. Here is one of the most comforting bits of writing I’ve ever found, for times like these. The thing is, the unformed unknowing never ends. But that’s okay. It has to be okay. I am trying, always to “accept… the anxiety of feeling yourself in suspense, and incomplete.”

Trust in the slow work of God.

We are, quite naturally, impatient in everything to reach the end without delay.

We should like to skip the intermediate stages.

We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new,

and yet it is the law of all progress that it is made by passing through

some stages of instability -- and that it may take a very long time.

⌘ So instead of health problems at the start of the month I now had car problems. My car had its yearly check up at the end of February. In March I had to return to fix a shake while driving. And in April I seemed to have problems with my cooling system. It was not fun. I gave me a lot of stress and sadness. I tried very hard not to let it rule me. It got fixed and as we were driving back from my parents at Easter, another light went on. Grr.

⌘ The change of the clock at the end of March messed a bit with Merijn’s sense of bed time and he keeps coming out of bed for 30 minutes. I hope he’ll get used to it again because it being light when he goes to bed is just going to get worse.

⌘ We got some fun bits for our garden to cheer it up.

⌘ We took Merijn to a fairytale theme park more geared towards his age with a very large playground as well. He loved it. He was so tired but he loved it.

⌘ Then a few days later Merijn got the sixth disease/roseola. He broke out in bumps and red splots over night, ended up with a high fever for 24 hours and then his temperature went back to normal. The break out took a few days longer to go away, een more so with some of the warmer days we had. He was better in time for Easter

⌘ For Easter we went to my parents. Which was fine. We had some great weather. Merijn stayed the week with my parents and we went back on King’s Day.

⌘ For some reason I got a bad case of hayfever? And then I woke up the last weekend of April and I had a swollen, stiff and sometimes painful knee. Who even knows what I did…

[fanfic] The Windborn: Chapter 1

I don’t know where I am. I can’ t see more than the length of my arm ahead of me. The snow and wind just keep blowing and blowing. I’m scared to keep walking, because I could fall, and I’m even more scared not to, because don’t people die when it’s too cold and they don’t keep warm? Walking is the only thing that keeps me warm. Or close to warm, I don’t think I am warm. I don’t think I ever will be again.

I want to think I will be, but it’s hard to tell anymore. Anyway, I keep walking. I’ve really got nothing else to do.

I wish that I did. I wish that I knew more about who I am and where I’m going. But I don’t. All I know is the wind and the cold.

The wind is nice. Well, it isn’t that nice. It’s loud and it’s strong and it keeps banging at me, blowing the snow all around, but I don’t think the wind wants to hurt me.

That’s really weird to think. I don’t know much else, but I know that. The cold probably doesn’t either, but it’s not like the wind. The wind is different.

I don’t want to think that the wind talks to me. But sometimes when I bend the right way, when the wind is loud enough, I think it would if it could. It’s so loud and there are words I can’t catch in it.

I think they’re words, anyway. I’m not sure. I don’t think I remember hearing words.

I really don’t remember anything. I mean, I know what snow and ice and wind are. I know what falling is and that I don’t want to do it. I know that words exist, but I can’t remember anyone talking to me. I can’t remember what the sound of my own voice is like.

That’s mostly because I haven’t tried talking, because there isn’t anyone here to talk to, and I don’t think it would do a lot to just shout into the wind.

Though maybe if I did, it would talk back and I could understand it?

I guess it’s worth a shot. What am I going to lose if it doesn’t work? There’s no one around here to stare at me.

I’m not sure if I’d care if there were people around to stare at me. At least if there was someone here, I could talk to them. Maybe.

Well, I’ll try.

“Is anyone there? Anyone?” I raise my voice as loud as I can, but the wind snatches it out of my throat and bounces it around and it doesn’t really do anything. Only a faint echo and nothing more. Not even a hint of someone out there listening.

I guess that’s all right? Or not? I don’t know these things.

I keep on walking, though, because I really can’t do anything else. I have to find a place where I can rest sooner or later, but I don’t have the foggiest idea of where it’s going to be. Would I even recognize a place to get warm if I saw one?

I like to think I would. I like to think a lot of things, but that’s mostly because right now, I don’t have anything else to do but walk and think and if I stop one I might stop the other and I’m pretty sure that would be a really, really bad idea.

So I just keep on walking and I try to look through the wind and snow and I’m not doing a very good job of it.

I still think I can hear voices, but they don’t belong to anyone I know: not that I can remember anyway. They’re not even proper voices saying something; it’s just kind of howling and noise and nothing that might be a name.

Do you have any idea of how weird it is to know that if someone called you by your name that you wouldn’t recognize it? That you wouldn’t know if someone tried to talk to you? They could be talking to that person over there.

Just because there aren’t any people over there doesn’t make it any better. They could just be talking to someone that I can’t see.

Because all I can see right now is the wind and the snow. The snow, at least. I don’t think anyone has ever been able to see the wind.

The way it sorta tugs at me makes me wonder what the wind wants, though. The more that I keep going, the more I’m sure that it wants something. Okay, maybe it’s just me being weird. If I knew what weird was. Maybe I can understand the wind.

At least I sort of think that it’s trying to get me to go somewhere. It’s still cold. It’s still got a lot of snow blowing around and I can barely see in front of my face.

So I’d better get going and see where the wind wants me to go. It’s got to be a little better than just walking on and not really getting anywhere.

I think I can trust the wind. I’m not sure, but I think so. I feel like I can. It doesn’t want me to change which way I’m going that much, which I guess is all right. So I just sort of shift around a little and head the way that the wind calls to me.

I have no idea of how long it is before the snow starts to get thicker and the wind blows even harder and I’m not all that sure all of a sudden that this was the right idea. Going back isn’t an option. I can’t really turn around, not with how the wind howls and presses against me.

Even when I try it, just to see, I stop very fast. No sooner do I get turned around than the wind picks up and howls and nearly knocks me off of my feet. Not a good idea. So I manage to get myself turned the way the wind wants me to go.

I don’t want to die. I know that, even if I don’t know a whole lot else.

I hope the wind knows it too.

Practicing the Art of "Your Opinion of Me is None of My Business!"

I’ve been criticized for how I look and dress.

I’ve had people tell me I am doing the devil’s work.

I’ve had people say that I am a fake and a fraud.

I’ve had people be downright hurtful and nasty…

and not “KNOW” a thing about me.

And… I have felt devastated, worthless and powerless.

How about you?

I’m sure you can relate, right?

I’ve also had people tell me I have saved their life.

I’ve had people share with me their deepest darkest secrets and find hope and possibility in our conversations.

I’ve cried with people in their sorrow, and laughed with them in their joy.

I have had people invite me into their most intimate life experiences.

and love me unconditionally…

And, I have felt appreciated, accepted and loved.

How about you?

So, what do we focus on, the pain or the pleasure?

The acceptance or the judgment?

The connection or the competition?

Where do you spend the most time?

Listening to the criticisms, or compliments?

What if it is all just Opinion?

What if we could just hear what people think or feel or say, and not take it personally. What if we could KNOW that whatever they think, or feel, or say… is about them … not truly about us? What if the opinion you valued and listened to was within you?

What if?

Here are two personal examples that I have received … both opinions of me … and my work. One as a witness/an observer and one as a experiencer. Two different sides of the fence.

Here’s one article that was written about the TV show I starred in in 2014. Many of you saw the show … and had your own opinions/feelings about it. A Séance With Lisa Rinna Explains A Lot About Lisa Rinna

The medium’s slightly overlong French-manicured toenails were not even the worst thing about LMN’s A Séance With… Lisa Rinna. The worst thing was the depiction of actual loved ones (by SkyMall catalog models) in segments that could easily be cut into Tim & Eric’s Awesome Show Great Job without a ripple in the comic sensibility.

But don’t you come to me with acrylic French-manicured toenails and tell me you can talk to spirits, because as far as I can tell you’re having trouble reading the desires and regrets of the living; never mind the deceased. While I loved the avant-garde hilarity, upon considering these were real deceased loved ones, the dramatic reenactments with the footage blown out and filtered a spooky blue and underscored with banshee whoops suddenly felt weirdly glib.

Sunny Dawn Johnston, tell the passel of editors and producers in charge of this fiasco that we don’t need horror movie stings and rapid-fire additive dissolves when revisiting people’s loved ones, okay? These are actual people who did not get a chance to sign off/profit from you putting words in their mouth, postmortem.

Moreover if we’re going to keep a straight face while watching you hunker down in the yoga studio that passes as a sacred space for Lisa Rinna, lighting massive vanilla pillar candles and squeaking around on foam yoga mats and scrawling in your Book of Shadows with the rounded writing of a middle schooler playing M.A.S.H., at least spare us the jump scares. Creepy ghost fun is not why anyone is at your séance.

Lisa Rinna is at your séance because she wants to find out the truth about her deceased sister, and you are at your séance to helpfully reveal the truth is what she thought it was all along, and we are watching your séance to laugh about how angry Lisa gets that the spirits seem more interested in her two normal friends than her.

Lisa Rinna got genuinely insulted that she wasn’t popular with the dearly departed. A true performer, Lisa gets awfully cold when the spotlight slides off her taut frame, as Sing Your Face Off taught us many times over.

She’s the real deal, folks.

But Sunny Dawn, insofar as your bullshit show goes: we all basically know how editing works and likewise we know somewhere in Burbank there’s 8 hours worth of footage on a cutting room floor of you getting shit wrong and asking leading questions.

We also know there are PRECIOUS FEW facts humans can just intuit. As far as stranger danger goes, yeah, trust your instincts, but have you ever just “felt” that you’re full of mitochondria? Have you “sensed” the Pythagorean Theorem? The truth and what you feel, Sunny Dawn, are two very different things.

If you’re dealing with someone 100% guided by/paid for their intuition, just know you’ve gotten off the Fact Train and you’re now at Fantasy Station, right at the edge of Bullshit Falls. Don’t stay too long.

2.This is an email I received a couple of days after I did a group reading, called Spirit Talk (which I do monthly), online for a group of about 40 people. This lady was watching online from Canada when she asked her question and I responded with the messages I received.

I asked my questions online and she answered me as one of the chosen questions.

I feel beyond grateful for her words and telling me my Bryce is ok. Bryce passed away at 11 years old suddenly and tragically from what we now know by a game “The Choking Game” ~ in the first few hours there was question if it was a suicide as there was mass confusion on why he was sitting straight up on floor, but its since been determined with more facts to this game.

Sunny was so bang on with all her answers to my questions if he was scared, fearful or in pain. I didn’t even ask but she answered it for me.

I have HUGE Mom guilt that I somehow missed this after thinking we were so so close and could talk about anything. Now he died from it.

We, his father and I, have made it a mission to help spread awareness about The Choking Game to all and any whom will listen; and again, without asking, Sunny said she had seen this, in her own words of course.

I am really trying to move forward from this tragic event and continue to fullfill my life purpose with Bryce gone. And I’m just really seeking how does one do that. Sunny helped with some direction.

Sunny also mentioned Bryce being with another child. Shivers. Only Child, also correct.

Bottom line. Please see that Sunny helped one Mom In Calgary, Alberta, Canada tonight with her words more then she will ever know. I literally was shaking, and in tears with her words.

P.S. She mentioned Bryce to be quite the character and know he was all that in life and more. I’ve enclosed his pic but I’m sure she has seen him.

So, my point is not …

to not give a shit about anyone or anything.

My point is …

to not let what other people think about you or what you do … hold you back from being WHO YOU ARE, and doing what you are meant to do! This is not an “in your face” bitchy response, but instead knowing who you are … and what is yours. When you have confidence, you don’t let the opinions of others, good or bad, affect WHO YOU ARE and how you feel about yourself. When you know you, the opinions of others don’t raise you up and they don’t bring you down. They are just information about someone else’s perception. And … it is all ok:)

There’s another very important piece to this… that I want to make sure I address …

What people think or don’t think about you … is simply their opinion … and everyone is entitled to their own experience of this world and all that is in it.

AND …

The way you react to it is about YOU!

Do you ever notice how sometimes, what people say doesn’t bother you at all, and other times it’s like a punch in the stomach?? LISTEN deeply to what you feel when the people are saying whatever the people are saying … if it strikes a cord in you, hits a button, or creates some resistance WITHIN YOU ... there is something within you to look at, to heal, to release. If you have a reaction to what they are saying, first of all, you are taking it personally, second of all … there is more work to do within … That’s all. Don’t make it any bigger than that … Don’t get into judgment of yourself, or blame of the other person … There is just some healing, some releasing or some letting go to do. THAT’S all. If there wasn’t something to heal, you wouldn’t feel the energy rise up within you … AND … Isn’t it great (smiling) that this person’s words, actions, thoughts or opinions have created within you an awareness that you have some healing to do?

I, for one, have learned over the years that I will never be able to please everyone. It’s simply not possible … and the reality is … it’s not my job.

It’s probably not your job either … and if you have been assigned or assigned yourself that role, maybe it is time to take on a new one?

Once I was able to truly learn that, I could finally let go of their opinions about me … and more importantly, when I am not able to let go of them (which still happens from time to time, but man is it few and far between) I can look within to see which part of me needs some healing. I don’t have to judge it, blame it, or get angry or hurt. I can just observe it with love and recognize, “Oh, there’s a little more work to do in that area. THANK YOU for the awareness!” THAT’S IT!

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK

Be a witness to the experience you have when someone shares an opinion, good or bad, and how you think or feel about it. Notice if it raises you up or brings you down. Notice the power you give it. If you feel a reaction within you … just observe it and ask, “Where is it that I need some healing around this subject?” Do some journaling, share here in the comments and let spirit guide you to the next step. Becoming the Epitome of a Goaldigger: Create the Lifestyle

My sole question to you is: There’s a world full of opportunity around you, so what’s the wait?

Really.. I’m curious, if you are still in the same position as you were last year, then why aren’t you making changes? You like to be stuck?

Now..of course, your question(s) to me are: And, what exactly does it mean to be a “goal digger” anyway? How will it even benefit me? Why should I adapt to this goal-diggin’ lifestyle? How can I be certain it will ensure a change in my life?

Well, before answering your questions, the first thing I will present to you are possible outcomes that you may classify as “bad” at first once you commit to developing this lifestyle. Once you take everything you should from it then you will learn that it is actually beneficial to you. Here’s a basic idea of what’s to expect from yourself:

Straying away from distractions

social media being the main one, which is a form of disconnecting from the social world to become more in tune with your own real world

talking and hanging out less with friends that you realize you cannot relate to anymore, you have less in common with, and aren’t growing with

LISTEN, outgrowing people is apart of life, it is okay. it is going to happen, it is real, and it will play a part. there does not have to be any bad blood between you guys but the decrease in communication, engagement, and interaction between you will be noticeable once you commit to the winning team....(not everyone around you will be open and willing to commit, but do not let them discourage you)

Finding yourself losing friends that do not support you and your growth

simply realizing that those “friends” you were so close to, does not reach out anymore once you publicize your accomplishments because their support for you is gone due to jealousy and envy

Become more protective/defensive of your life, happiness, and success

caring more about eliminating things/people that put anything you work for in jeopardy

Overthinking and analyzing things differently because your mind will be open to more knowledge and perspectives to help you see things in your glass half full instead of half empty

being open-minded

So, now I’ll ask you..

Goal-digger, what does it mean?

Becoming a goal-digger is about grabbing a hold of resources, taking full advantage of the connections/plugs you have, surrounding yourself with people on the same (or higher level) as you, learning new ways to live, reacting and behaving differently, seeking positive vibes in the midst of negativity, maintaining independence while being open to help offered, and always being secure with yourself because you know if you fall short...there’s room for change and growth. Never settle. Just learn how to move differently.

Learn to be Selfish, first..

Change what ever it is that does not bring you a peace of mind because there are way too many opportunities for growth out there to give you a piece of mine. I guarantee you, there is enough to go around for each of us to have more than plenty. I’m selfish, it’s okay to be selfish. My selfish is good because I have still remained selfless. If you adapt to the same lifestyle, you’ll learn the aspect of selfishness that benefits you in the same (or even better) ways that it benefits me. So, OWN it. Be selfish and do not be ashamed of it.

Now, developing an innovative mindset is the next step. You have to be open and honest with yourself.Then, creating a lifestyle from your newly developed mindset that will ensure multiple revenues, opportunities, and accomplishments. Learn the importance of networking and resources; using those connections to the best of your ability. Leave your comfort zone, come out and enjoy a new way of living. Having the ability to structure yourself, your mind, and behavior to set goals (short and long-term), set designated time frames to actually accomplish each goal, and earning the luxury to cross it off your “list of accomplishments” with pride, confidence, and dignity knowing you put the hard-work and dedication in to tackle each task, accordingly.

Do not become, remain, or stay stagnant.

Instead, grow.

If you are not genuinely happy (both, internally and externally), then works towards changing your situation and finding happiness

internally, change your ways, spirits, what you intake and consume, allow to enter your mind

externally, change your environment/surrounding and appearance to become more vibrant and healthy with exercise and better eating habits

Being a goal digger is not about spending too much time manifesting in the accomplishment of one single goal, but using that time to set new goals and maintaining the structure. Yes, it is absolutely vital to acknowledge your accomplishments and give yourself a pat on the back but do not drown in it, it will lead you back to the comfort zone you are working towards leaving. Merely making goals as habitual in your life as brushing your teeth, bathing, eating, and sleeping is crucial.

The best thing about making goal-diggin’ a lifestyle is that you create the goals for yourself. There are no guidelines, no right or wrong, and no pressure because you set the goals and time frames of completion depending on your own life, time, and all the things you have to juggle. You don’t want to put too much on yourself that it overshadows your true capabilities. You know, more than anyone else, what you can and cannot handle. You know what your life consists of, what you’re responsible for, and how much time you actually have to dedicate to the goals. However, challenging yourself is key.

Goals can range from something big, that requires a lot of focus, time, and may even take you out of your comfort zone completely to something small that does not require as much and could be accomplished while you multi-task. There are no limitations. Whether your goal is to find a new job (or quit/replace a bad one that does not appreciate you, pay you enough for the work that you do, or mistreats you in any other way), mend a damaged relationship/friendship (or leave a toxic relationship/get rid of a toxic friend), graduate (or enroll back into school/take up a trade), start your own business, buy your own house/car (both, think BIG), find a mentor, go on a vacation, save a certain amount of money, learn a new skill (cooking, sewing, etc.), volunteer, donate to a charity, get active in your own community, develop a healthier lifestyle through eating habits and exercise. Whatever the goal(s) may be, they are set according to your own life and the changes that you need to make in order to ensure your happiness and success so strategize according to that.

How to develop/create a “goal list”: Flexibility leads to success

Whether you design it in bullet point form where you simply list each goal with a time frame that you plan to accomplish it or in paragraph form where you use more detail and description explaining the goal(s), the time frame you plan to accomplish it, how you plan to tackle it, explain how the goal will be significant to your life, or what benefits of accomplishing it will contribute to your happiness and success. Either way, it is up to you. It is all about what works for you. The amount of goals on your list, the type of goals on your list, if you want to differentiate between short and long-term goals, or whatever you decide is solely up to you. If you list one goal, three goals, five or more on your list is up to you. If you set a time-frame of accomplishment to be daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly is up to you. It is okay if you decide you put too much on yourself or it was not challenging enough to please you, you make the changes so that you adapt to what’s best for you. With this strategy, you cannot fail..maybe fall, but never fail. The dynamic of your goal list is up to you but do not overestimate or under estimate yourself. Be as flexible and versatile as you like, it is your own life where you are implementing these changes. I cannot stress this enough. Examples of each form are below..

Bullet-point form example

Within a two week time-frame, I plan to:

Study the bible, on a daily basis

Change my hair color and hair style

Apply for new jobs

Detailed, paragraph form example

Within a two week time-frame, I plan to accomplish three goals. The first goal is to study the bible on a daily basis because I want to build a stronger relationship with God and develop stronger faith. The second goal is to change my hair color and cut my hair into a pixie cut because it signifies boldness and I’m ready for change so this will be the beginning of it for me. The third goal is to fill out several applications to find a new job because I want to obtain more experience in the career field that I studied, where I am paid better and my degree is of use.

Personally, what works for me..

I journal, a lot. I document almost everything in my life to keep track of where I once was and where I have grown to be now. I journal about everything because the pen to paper release has become essential to my life, it is a way of reflecting for me. I document what I plan to work on in my life, what my goals are, my accomplishments, my emotions, my plans for my future, and so on. It keeps me going, it keeps me inspired, and motivated non stop. Not only is a great tool of release to avoid keeping things bottled in, it helps with mental health..start small. Try different strategies and reflect. Remember, it is not always good to confide in people about what you plan to do and what your next move may be. They may throw negativity your way. Confiding in yourself is important too. It works. It keeps me on track.

SUGGESTIONS, from me to you..

Spend the time you dedicate to social networking on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat to actually networking...in real life, in person; e.g. join student organizations in college (or build/start one of your own), meet with an advisor regularly to seek resources, or meet with a mentor, go to a convention or conference

Read more books; motivational, spiritual, self-help books

Learn to not only save your money but INVEST

Work to ensure that your resume has substance; e.g. degrees with career-field jobs, volunteer, start your own business, develop credible references

Be consistent and persistent with the strategy of your choice

Now, ask yourself.. Do you have what it takes to be a goaldigger and create a goal-diggin’ lifestyle for yourself?

Remember, no pressure. The goal isn’t to add more stress and frustration to your life, but add structure and substance to keep you focused, dedicated, determined to achieve the goals to guarantee your success. So, if you simply cannot scratch every single goal you set off your list in the designated time frame because life happened, it is okay. Trust me. Just incorporate those same goals in your next set of goals. You could never lose with this mindset and strategy. We can all win, together. Inspire, encourage, and motivate those around you to adapt to the goal-diggin’ lifestyle...show what the benefits of it actually are. The same way in which I introduced it to you, I hope you will pass it along..

I decided to expand my TBR tackler selection list to include titles on previous Tackling the TBR posts that I either didn’t have a chance to get to or am currently part way through. It gives me a more accurate snapshot of my progress over time and more potential high-priority titles to choose from each month. Up until this point, there have only been about five or so carryover titles, but as I am trying to be conservative by relying on the library for a lot of these books, I fell victim to the endless waitlist in January. Many of these titles I put on hold at the beginning of December… something is not right here. I need the next Kate Daniels book, like, yesterday!

Now, I can tell you from experience that this Tackling the TBR experiment is so much more fun and rewarding when there’s more than one person (me) participating. Does anybody want to play along?

Is it Self-Care?

I am a HUGE advocate for doing whatever is necessary to function at your absolute best day-to-day. That can be anywhere from lighting some Palo Santo, to going for a run, sacrificing your credit card to the local expenditures or just disconnecting and getting your Netflix & Chill on… with your boo alcohol/weed (or both). However, as someone who constantly disconnects for “self-care”, I really had to really start looking at why I was bullshitting my friends. It wasn’t necessarily that I didn’t want to see them or I was unwell. Sometimes they said let’s grab food and my bank account laughed at me so I just kinda sat in my bed wondering how the bitch I invest so hard in could do such a thing. Needless to say, I cancel plans quite often. However, I try to come at the situation early. Like if we have plans on Saturday, by Wednesday I know full and damn well what excuse I am using to not show up and on Thursday, you will have to accept it. A personal favorite is an open-ended cancellation. “Oh girl, I’m not feeling well but I’ll let you know day of if I’m feeling better.” (I never will in this lifetime.)

Now a lot of times, my friends know that there is something going on or I’m stressed from life/work so they assume I’m just doing my self-care. Realistically, I’m laying around in bed and raiding my fridge without showering until about 5pm with a high possibility of not remembering whether I brushed my teeth that morning. And we all call that “self-care” because I’m disconnecting from the world and taking the time that I need to get my energy up so that I can function day-to-day. If we’re going to be completely honest, I’m one of those introverts that recoups their energy by actively engaging with people. Like if I’m drained from a day, a good conversation with good company sends my spirit through the roof and usually I’m revitalized. Now, people are also draining as fuck but disconnecting usually is a slow deterioration as it’s me, my thoughts and I’ve come to the conclusion that sitting in that environment is much akin to the devil’s playground. Things get dark and negative FAST. And I just prefer to be doing something (something preferably free) with my time when I’m awake. I’m totally down to have a meal but how about we cook the meal and stay in. I can hear you speak, we control the track list and I find cooking therapeutic. I’m from MD which to NY is basically the south. Hosting and gatherings is more just shit we do rather than revisit the SAME FUCKING PLACES. I haven’t had a good kickback in NY since I stopped hosting them. But among my friend group, a lot of us commune in the fact that sitting back with a good group of friends and enjoying each other’s time/company is usually some of the best care we get. Even if we’re in a bad mood and we just want to bitch about how that paycheck never come out right next to these student loans, we always end smiling and laughing.

If we’re going to talk about “self-care” then we should acknowledge that it shouldn’t be something we practice monthly or weekly but a daily habit that keeps us going in the direction we want to go. All that disconnecting or the monthly spa day is cool but truly how is isolation or spoiled endeavors really caring for yourself. Especially when these acts exist in a day/finite amount of time and then you go back through long stretches of the shit that brought you down in the first place. If you’re developing a habit as a reward for surviving rather than dealing with your problems or minimizing their impact, how is that helping? Think about dieters who plan out their cheat days. Sure, the cheat days work well for plenty to encourage them to keep going and hold on. But have you ever met them in maintenance where everyday is technically a cheat day or they hold onto that mentality and we justify their hangry behavior? Bitch, you force starving yourself of what you desire ain’t got shit to do to me. You hungry, here’s a snickers. In the same sense, a lot of our “self-care” splurges of isolated and specialized timing isn’t really fixing any issues, simply applying bandages and ointment until you bleed through. Rinse, disinfect, repeat. They’re treats. Self-care should be the daily habits we form to mitigate the hardships and irritations of our lives. The bigger, spread out measures of self-care are warranted and truly add value to people’s lives, not knocking it. But they don’t necessarily suffice by themselves. I find it amazing how much people talk about the things they do for “self-care” but then carry on in the same depressed manner after the supposed event as they did before. Why? Because bandages just protect wounds from infection. Healing is an internal process that our bodies do and require an appropriate level of hydration, nourishment and rest to fix itself. So one weekend a month ain’t gonna heal you if you keep opening up the same wound.

So what does heal? What qualifies as actual self-care to ensure we’re running as our best optimal selves? Just focus on our health and doing things that fulfill and excite us. You know half the time when I’m on set doing a shoot that I’m really excited about or helping someone with a project, I consider it self-care. Not anything extravagant or overly thought through, not an isolated time to enjoy a particular habit (rather draining 95% of the time) but I’m feeding my soul. I’m giving my soul a recharge by just doing things that challenge me creatively and allow me to expand my concepts and collaborate. A lot of times, for me, self-care can be defined in my daily routines: showers in the morning to wake up and clean myself but also a shower at the end of the day to decompress. I literally just jump in the shower as a means of separating my day and saying that all the things related to work and the outside world that were bothering me or irritating me and refocus on what I want to do for the night, be that work or simply eat and sleep. In addition, I like to watch my crappy reality tv or random YouTube videos while I eat. For bed, I always put on a diffuser with lavender as my carrier oil to just bring me down and help me sleep. That all happens daily and really keeps me grounded rather than breaking down. Another huge aid in my daily is the focus on diet and exercise. I feed my body what causes me the least inflammation and the most satisfaction. I have steak quite often and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. And a good morning gym session really helps set the stage for my day. And you know what it might mean for some of you, that daily coffee in the morning with just the right amount of sweetness or bitterness to help you jolt your day. Or that after work phone call with your significant other where you can just vent. The playlist that you play pre- and post-work to really keep your spirit high. That is self-care. It is those habits we’ve formed to keep us grounded and able to handle all that life throws at us. And in a time where everyone is so focused on their own self-care, it’s important that people exercise the definitions that they assign to the term, whatever that may entail. But this is my blog so you’re gonna get my opinion. And these are just minor examples but I think it’s really important that if people want to take care of themselves, they actually take care of themselves, inside and out. Most importantly, it’s about looking to take care of all aspects of yourself, not just the physical being that people interact with but making sure your mental health is in order and you are leaning on the right people to keep you supported and focused. Most importantly, in my opinion, is taking the time to find what feeds your soul and keeps you moving spiritually. A lot of people work jobs that we justify strictly based off the fact that they pay us just enough to keep coming back for 2 weeks but don’t personally fulfill us or reinforce that our lives have purpose and we’re working towards fulfilling that purpose. It’s actually crazy how much we let our mundane, bill-paying jobs run us into the ground and forget to establish what our purpose is in life and how we’re going to do it. But that’s what I encourage everyone to do: take care of yourself so that you can do what you were born to do; whatever that is.
