He laid awake at night, leafing through memories of his own life as he might a familiar book, looking for a half-remembered passage that might – illuminate the present. Miss Winters. A stranger. Some part of him knew that she preferred coffee to tea, and put a great deal of milk in it; that if he were to take it in mind to lead her, all he had to do was hold her lightly, by her little fingertips. But he had never known her before, and thinking that left him half-sick – aching, as though in fever – and nauseated, some foreign thing stuck in his guts.
