hmmm this is probably a hot take but i think sometimes just because a building is old or "historic" doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't be torn down
#particularly when we look at this in the context of the united states i find it somewhat hypocritical#to be so obsessed with preserving the structures that early colonists built..... while destroying everything that was already here#it's not that historic preservation is never important. like it is quite valuable#but in some cases i think people just become attached to the idea of what something once represented#even tho it is no longer practical or useful or relevant. plus sometimes buildings do just literally become unsafe#i always think of that douglas adams quote about the japanese temple that burned down and got rebuilt#i think it's important to discern between the situations where historic preservation is about education and gaining knowledge#v.s. when it's about maintaining an ideal in order to preserve a particular narrative about the past—whether or not it's true#it's important to ask which history is being preserved and treated as important vs which history is fine to tear down and why#bri babbles
