The Reptiles
Houdini the amel corn snake Age: 18 years Likes: his routine; he poops in the same corner, he patrols his cage in the same manner daily, he likes being fed on schedule. Dislikes: being handled often Fun fact: when I first got Houdini (at 8 years old from a pet store) I had him with a heat rock, no way to measure temperature, and fed live. Now he’s in a 4x2x2ft PVC enclosure, a Herpstat controlling his UTH, and eats frozen / thawed. I made all the mistakes in the beginning, but as I learned more I changed my husbandry!
Houdini is beginning to go blind in his old age, and because of that I keep him on paper towel instead of aspen like I used to. He sometimes misses when he strikes for food and I worry about him ingesting loose particle substrate. He’s still loving life and I love him very much. He is developing cataracts on his right eye.
Maddie the axanthic corn snake Female, adopted. Approximately 10 years old. She is currently in an IRIS xmas tree tub. Likes: being handled, pooping in baths Dislikes: I haven’t found one thing she dislikes!
Fun fact: she was covered in burns and had broken ribs when she was first seized by SPCA Cruelty Department but you wouldn’t know it now!
Lenore the spider ball python Female, bought from a “reputable breeder”. This was before I knew much about “the Wobble”, I was told this baby didn’t really have a wobble / that the breeder’s spiders didn’t have severe wobbles. It has gotten worse with age, and you notice it during feeding times (repeatedly missing the prey, etc). I can’t keep her on loose particle substrate because she gets mouthfuls of dirt every time she tries to eat. I love my Lenore very much, but I am passionate about explaining the severity of this neurological defect and I am 100% against breeding the spider morph. She is currently in an IRIS Xmas Tree Tub
Likes: Being fed on time Dislikes: Not being fed on time Fun fact: this is my most hands-on snake. She’s a very good snambassador (snake ambassador).
Gandhi the pastel ball python Male, bought from a non-reputable breeder (I guess I’d call them a backyard snake breeder!). He refused feed for the first 6 months I had him and lost 20+% of his body weight. I had him on live feeding for a couple years until I finally got him onto pre killed ASFs, then f/t ASFs, then f/t mice, then f/t rats (scented with mice). He’s now eating small f/t rats with ease, but they CANNOT be all white! He is currently in an IRIS xmas tree tub.
Likes: climbing, sitting on branches/perches Dislikes: being handled Fun fact: I regret calling this snake Gandhi and want to rename him.
Autumn the Pueblan milk snake Unsexed (assumed male), adopted. Approximately 6+ years old Likes: hiding in a scarf during handling, likes being hidden for the most part Dislikes: being picked up Fun fact: Autumn was likely dumped outside, or perhaps is an escaped pet. He was found outdoors in autumn hiding under leaves in someone’s front yard, hence his namesake.
Zelda the leopard gecko. Female, and adopted. She was my little cousin’s leopard gecko five years ago. He lost interest in her and was forgetting to feed her for weeks at a time, not cleaning the enclosure or refilling her water, etc. She wasn’t in a very good set up either, although she was receiving proper supplements thankfully. I took her in September 2015 and got a custom 3D background and hides made for her. Likes: climbing her shelves, superworms, licking things Dislikes: not being able to interact with people Fun fact: Zelda has an old UVB light and plenty of dark hiding places. She loves to come out before it turns on fully to say good sleep to me, and loves to come out as it’s turning off to say good night. She is so curious, active, and bold. I cannot believe how much personality leopard geckos have. She’s my first lizard.
Sardonyx the super pastel ball python. Unsexed, I rescued her. She was dumped in a shoebox size sterilite bin along with a thousand dollars worth of other ball pythons in a national park during the winter. Many were dead, and she was emaciated. She and one other ball python were rescued by me, the rest were euthanized if not DOA. I rehomed the other ball python. Likes: basking in UVB light before it goes out for the night Dislikes: being handled Fun fact: After passing quarantine, I moved Sardie into a naturalistic bioactive enclosure that I built. Prior to bio, she was a very difficult eater. Now she never misses a meal and has been gaining a lot of weight.
Quetzelli the black Mexican kingsnake. I bought her at a reptile expo, she is sexed as female. Likes: cork rounds, eating, burying under substrate, climbing up rock walls Dislikes: being confined Fun fact: she escaped and was missing for over 6 months. I was sick with grief and believed her to be dead. Miraculously, she was found outside down the street. She had a veterinary exam and was perfectly fine, although did lose some weight. I invested money in a Nat Geo cage that is completely escape proof and with locked doors. Never again!
I also have a Kenyan Sand Boa named Wyrm, a rescue from an SPCA Cruelty seizure. However, I do not have any photographs of him since my cellphone broke a few months ago, and I lost all my pictures I hadn’t backed up.
