I liked The Glassworker. They didn't focus on the cause of the war. Just the effects of it. The loss. The destruction. The cause was just offhandedly mentioned. Two nations fighting over a singular small piece of land. That's it. And they never mentioned it again.

I really want to rewatch it. I feel like there are some things I didn't get originally. I want to go back and see.

Everybody is listening to NOBODY IS LISTENING!!!! (I know, so cheap, that's on par with New Direction headlines, I'M SORRY OKAY. Never again.) Anyway the album debuted at #1 on the worldwide itunes charts and in dozens of countries, there's more awesome merch (socks! masks! mugs!), and Zayn (or various manifestations of him) are everywhere. He tweeted “Just wanna say, it feels great to share this with you all! everyone’s support and love means a lot, here’s to a great year hope it better than the last!” and he's out there answering comments (that'll be him; would a PA bother with those fancy fonts?), but is it him texting people back from the snippet number? Unlikely... is it him in the listening party chats? IDK but there's definitely a Zaynbot (well, staff in this case) in there as well (if you don't believe me the “we appreciate you” is a clue lol), is it him doing all the boring promo retweeting, ehh, and so it goes throughout the promo, Zayn is everywhere but where is ZAYN?? I feel like the blurring of the line between the man and the various bots would make (human) Zayn pretty pleased, the man loves a robot after all! HOWEVER, it would be a special kind of robot that would select the “I'm fingering myself” tweet (in which he was NOT tagged) to answer (“ya wha?”), and how lucky are we to have the real ting among us for this brief moment: who else, I ask you. WHO ELSE. And, of course, we got the biggest pure Zayn shot of all: the ALBUM! He also liked a tweet about the fact that Tightrope samples an Urdu song (by Mohammed Rafi), and reposted a fan's story from a NIListening listening party ft homemade party hats that were markedly classier than the no doubt expensive custom-made ones from Zayn's bday party, and a sexy new publicity pic was posted. We also got footage from a truck all tricked out to be a NIL-mobile! The back of the box van is filled with an installation of mirrors and NIL faces and black light and a spinning platform-- footage from there showed very few people present and they spoke of having a COVID-safe release party but given that there was a pro camera team present, there's speculation it was perhaps used to film a video or something as well. But whether or not that happened it does seem they drove it around to use for private celebration, a lot of people from Hadid circles posted about being there and there being a kid dance time and stuff. Lots of cool trippy footage from inside.

Today's Harry news again slants towards TPWK video chat rather than movie studio sponsored romance-- in what little Holivia news there is we get an interesting backpedal focus on being told that if Olivia and Jason were still together when Harry came into the picture (if this were real which it isn't) he “didn't know” and, in so many words in big old headline type, “Harry is blameless.” Furthermore, the idea that this might be “just a phase” for Olivia has been introduced. That astrologer was pretty on the nose in some predictions, but May or June for a Jason/ Olivia reconciliation seems awfully conservative to me; I'd be very surprised if we had to wait that long! Anyway, if they're trying to redirect Harry news to be about his music, I'm on board! Today we got more from Gabe and Ben Turner; Gabe says “He works to a really high standard but he’s unbelievably kind to literally everyone, all the time. Even if he’s under pressure, he never drops his standards of the right way to behave and being kind to people... You watch the way he is with the runners, producers, sound people, whoever… He’s treating them with so much love and respect that everyone works as hard as they possibly can to make his vision come true because he’s so joyful to be around” which could sound like more damage control, except that it's exactly what everyone who's ever worked with him says, so we know it's true. Ben tells us that the Golden vid was supposed to be different-- “the initial idea was Harry driving around LA with different people getting in and out of the car, people who were significant to the album or his life.” I guess it's handy they had the idea already right there to recycle for Holivia pics; but also I'm glad the video was what it ended up being instead of that. They also tell us that the TPWK vid was always going to be the final piece of the Fine Line era (“It was always supposed to be the last thing on the album run as an ending beat”) but that it ended up being held back longer than originally intended because the album did so well (and probably because of the way things were stretched out by COVID) and how that ended up being strange- “the video has stayed the same but the world has disappeared.”

An affordable candle from Target has been found that allegedly smells like... Louis? Reviews specify that he smells like “clean laundry” (I have to admit I have heard that said before) and vanilla and so does the candle, which is called 'cozy nights' and is said to also be 'a cute color' (it's white). I might want to pair the candle with a slight eau de wet dog, cause in MY fantasy Louis hangout Cliff is for sure there too, but the target candle buying audience may be fantasizing about, uh, different scenarios than me...

And finally, Niall on Niall; “epic... jesus I'm way too much“ (yes with laugh faces) plus he comments on his 14 million spotify listeners-- “next time we're gona get much higher.” He also posted to suggest folks should give Heartbreak Weather a listen so it seems he hasn't yet given up on getting higher numbers THIS time.

HELLO HELLOOOOOO and welcome back. Totally steering away from the tension of the elections for this post because I just finished watching A Suitable Boy on netflix the other day and as usual I have certain scenes stuck in my head that need to be discussed.

So an introduction, (And lots of spoilers ahead!)

Netflix’s latest indian release has been A Suitable Boy, an adaptation of a best selling book written by Vikram Seth (which i now kinda wanna read) and in collaboration with BBC studios,  follows the lives of primarily Lata and Maan. Set in post partition independent India, it highlights the journey of self discovery as well as what the title suggests, the search for a suitable boy. Intertwined with lots of secrets and scandals, the show is overall captivating and takes a little bit of a modern twist, mainly because of the fact that the characters mostly speak in English!

The main actress, Lata, was portrayed beautifully as such a well educated and independent woman trying to follow her mother’s wishes of finding her a husband but battles with her own secret love for the dashing Kabir Durrani, a muslim star cricketeer of their school; amongst her slight attraction to her sister-in-law’s younger brother Amit Chatterji, a witty poet who holds the power to charm Lata’s brain as much as her heart, although much to her mother’s disapproval. Lastly, we have Haresh Khanna, a humble and talented cobbler who Lata’s mother has introduced her to as her choice of a suitable boy who is  constantly fighting for Lata and her mother’s approval. Overall this aspect of the show somehow reminded me of GIlmore Girls, because of how close mother and daughter were, as were Lorelai and Rory and also how it was always a battle between Dean, Jess and Logan. But who did Rory, and Lata in this instance, really want to be with in the end amongst their romances with each of the 3 men.

So before starting on the show I had only heard of the title and that the lead role of Maan was played by Ishaan Khatter. The rest of the cast included Tabu, Ram Kapoor and so on. A stellar cast to bring out the dramatic tones of the show and highlight the political and religious unrest, scandals and romance all across the 6 episodes. I mean look at the stellar performance and chemistry between Ishaan and Tabu throughout the show!

Starting the first episode, I realise like I mentioned above, that most of the show is in English which is great for a potato like me so I don’t have to read subtitles. Did it match the setting of 1950s India? Initially I wasn’t sure because how do you portray the accuracy in culture if it’s all in English and then I realised a damn good cast is all you need, which they definately had. Also because its a collaboration with BBC, the show has some actors with stronger British or American accents than others, and yet they transition from speaking in English to Hindi or Urdu very seamlessly. I think this would really help to attract the non Indian crowd to also take an interest in the show, as well as the culture.

Now the whole series has been made to be very theatrical, hence the introduction to my post. Throwing in a little fun fact some might not know about me is that I used to study Theatre and Drama, which made my appreciation grow for this style of directing/acting because I feel like it’s hardly being used nowadays. That being said, i feel like having the show in English was key to bring out all the dramatic aspects of the series. I think many people did not like that or maybe could not understand little aspects of it. I loved it though I thought it was a clever way to show off the historical side as well as attract a bigger audience.

*More spoilers ahead!!*

 My favourite scene though, was the ending of Episode 5!

Maan, in a fit of drunk rage and jealousy, had just stabbed his best fried Firoz.

Firoz enters the scene dragging his feet, hands clutched to his side, as blood gushes out of his stab wound. He stumbles and finally gives up as he falls to the ground and continues to bleed out as the scene ends. The best part is, the whole scene was set to be red in colour with very dim lighting all around but a huge spotlight on Firoz. Wow I cant even explain how well thought-out that scene was and how impactful of an ending they were able to portray in that episode. It’s like creating a whole other air of suspense and drama as you watch him as an audience bleeding out. I mean they could have just shown him bleeding out on the naturally lit street (but then again were streets ever well lit at night in that era???) But what I’m trying to say is that the whole show could have taken a very different direction but i very much enjoyed the theatrical direction. 

Overall, I really liked the series, took me some time to get through all 6 episodes though, but it was worth it. It’s also quite a nice and simple reminder while watching that that was what people were doing at that time, without technology and so on. It also makes us think back to (the unfortunately stereotypical) topic of parents thinking that they have to find a suitable partner for their child after a certain age. I mean as bright as Lata was, she was still made to believe that she had to follow the path laid out for her by her mother when she was portrayed to be an excellent student of English Literature. I mean you could actually cross refer this series to A suitable Girl on netflix (a documentary focusing on 3 indian girls and how they’re parents and society pressurise them to get married as well how their married life ends up looking like) and the problem comes back to society, expectations, religion, pressure and just the indian culture. 

So yes to end it all off, I do definitely recommend this show for primarily Indians but also to non indians to have a better understanding of issues ad culture of that time.

I don’t think any music has ever spoken to me then this album. i’ve never been in a relationship but the lyrics are beautiful and it’s just makes me speechless.

First of all the line “He likes my American smile, like a child when our eyes meet” 🥺💞 This is beautiful and I love it because i’m a first generation American in my family bc the rest of my fam is from Pakistan and idk but it gives me hope and happiness i guess. Because i’m always told how American I am by my family and how I need to start speaking urdu and how i seem snobby and all thsi stuff that makes me kind of insecure about my American style and I guess i’m making this line deeper than it is but Taylor you have no idea how much it means to me.

Favorite food: does food in general count? the first thing that comes to mind is chotpoti (it’s basically the filling you have inside a pani puri, but better cuz phuchkas over pani puri every time - but it’s literally these tiny lentils, chickpeas if you wanna be lazy, cooked with potatoes and every spice known to the world and then you add the tamarind sauce which is so hard to make and that’s why there’s always a limited amount but every asshole that comes to our place on Eid literally drinks it like some animal but whatever you literally have to soak the dry tamarind in water and get all the gross stuff out while keeping the good stuff and figure out a good balance of chilli powder, salt and sugar and it’s never as good as when mom does it)

Idk why I just ranted like it’s my job, but I’m leaving it there. I also like thin-crust mushroom pizza (the brand is Ristorante and it is the best), my dad’s shrimp and potato curry (idk what else to call it, I don’t even eat it with rice, I turn that shit into a taco, I’m not even sorry), naan and bihari kebab w/ that really spicy green chutney/raita/whatever it is, piyaju and aloo chop (it’s fried and it’s so bad for you, and I hate onions but for some reason I don’t give a fuck when it comes to piyaju even though it’s just lentils and onions - it’s frieeeeeed), and apple pie (apple anything dessert tbh)

Play any instruments: I've played piano kinda on and off (I could probably follow a song), I learned flute in middle school but I never continued it and ooooooo I'm trying to teach myself guitar; I also sing

Story of the day, 2

orph. i need to cut it short, as time is running out.

the things that i really wanna write to you are the things that matters more to me. like the things she said.

like, ok, wait. we met other teachers. we took pictures. & ma’m left. & we walked together. a lot. i missed this so much.

now, those little things, why they matter to me don’t know. we went to taltola to have fuchka & we sat beside. & first ommi said she & four would share a plate. me & didi another. & four changed that match & said she & i would share a plate.. (even though we both were bad at eating that thing & probably couldn’t have finished it on our own. why though?.... i wanna think she wanted to share food with me. share. with me. ---) anyway, i actually don’t like having large fuchka & also, i didn’t feel well eating. so i ended up having a drink.

dear god. i have no idea, what i’m writing here & why? what’s the purpose of all this? do i want her to read all these one day? or do i wanna look back & see these days? don’t know. don’t know nothing.

i wanted her to pay some more attention to me, but did she? i don’t know. but when our principal was talking about urdu, she looked at me. she looked at me many times & i didn’t look back. silly me. i should’ve looked back. how long has it been since i looked her in the eye last time? silly so silly me. if its at her home, like she told me to there in next holidays, i can’t stare at her. that won’t be nice. but there. when everyone was there.. i could’ve looked at her while she was looking at me.

& she said, 2/3 years back, i had প্রাঞ্জলতা in my face. i no longer have প্রাণ in the way i look. i don’t know if that makes her like me less. don’t know anything. but she really doesn’t know how i’m dying everyday. does she?

i don’t know why she’s nicer to me these days. why she’s talking to me more. is she feeling sympathy for me? have i turned into a sympathy seeker? or is it just cause she doesn’t have wifi at her home in dhaka? or she’s keeping her fb deactivated. so she needs me to talk with her. i just don’t wanna overdo it. i just don’t wanna get crazy like i did before.

SHE COULDN’T CONTROL HER LAUGHTER, can you believe that? when we were at a book shop & she was moving her books from her bag to ommi’s. & after a moment, it occurred to her that people might think she was shoplifting, so she hurriedly left that place & started laughing there, in front of a gate. that priceless laughter, i couldn’t believe what i saw. though i didn’t dare to stare. but took snaps of her face. her squeezed eyes, eyebrows. her slightly open mouth, that she fought to close..

she had tea at a stall before, with ommi. i wonder if it’s before or after i had tea with her. she told me though, back then, that she never had tea in a tea stall.. so maybe after. & she showed that stall. did she do that for me to see it. or just cause she could remember that place.. i don’t know. maybe both. or maybe i’m only being too hopeful..

when we were walking, she & only, & we’re near to where our paths divide, she asked me which way i’d go. & that, it was my choice, i could pick either. i looked away, didn’t know what to say to that. but then i simply walked with her to her way.

& then, she said, looking around,, everything is same. except two people.

omg, i almost forgot about the ring. the ring. i once asked her to buy me a ring & the excuse was that i lost all my rings, which i did really,, & she bought one for me from lalon mela. she remembered! & she gave it to me. i’m wearing it on my ring finger.. not feeling anything though. about it. i don’t know what to feel.

& she wanted to bring the phone’s back cover that she bought but forgot. & you know, she texted me that she thought i’d see her phone. o’r at least her wallpaper. & everytime she took out her phone,, she did something & i felt like she didn’t want me to take that from her.. & thought now she has more that doesn’t want me to see. so i didn’t think of taking it from her.

i wanted to talk to her even more. a lot. lot. you know i was watching videos the night earlier, to see how to talk, chat, & make it interesting & not run out of topics & how to make someone open up.. etc. now that i’m writing this, it’s making me embarrassed. but i really can’t talk. & i wanted to hear from her all about her life there.

& she saw her phone & missed calls from home, so she was in a hurry. & didn’t want her to get into any trouble for me. so i said, i’ll go. you take a rikshaw and go home. & she was like, you going? ok. like that.. & turned arround & as i started walking, my heart was breaking & i thought how could i do that. i’m not gonna see her in months,, if it ends here, it ends for how long who knows? nothing’s gonna happen. so let me stay with her a little longer. & i turned back after walking a few steps & saw her looking at me. & i ran to her back. & gave her a feather & a sticker of aladdin & the genie. haha. i ran. how silly of me. what’s hurry?

i wanted to keep walking & not go back home. i always feel like that when i have to leave her, don’t know why.

she told me to go at her place when next time she comes. but i wanna walk with her. like i was that day. i wanna see her from behind.. and wanna see her walk beside me. i hit her back with my head, i don’t know if she noticed that. but that kinda made me afraid of what i’ll do next. so i hurriedly said goodbye. how i wanted to touch her everytime she got closed to me.

she’s a different person at home & outside. she’s nice at home but not.. i don’t know, she doesn’t open up enough there. & i feel so nervous with her when at her home. and her family there.

i think of her all day. this needs to end. really. i just wish it ends in a nicer way.

Are you the kind of friend you would want to have as a friend? if so, why? i think at times yes but in general lmao fuck no - just bc obviously everyone knows how to deal with themselves so like itd be great for when im being moody bc id know what to do but im also a clingy annoying piece of shit so nah fam 

17. When you’re in a bad mood, do you prefer to be alone or with people? depends, i usually prefer to be alone or i like to be with close friends but just like chilling like watching movies or something bc talking about feelings is yucky

18. If you could start over, what would you do differently? are we talking restarting life bc in that case I’d think about big decisions properly before I made them also I’d tell myself not to jump off the firemans pole so I didn’t break my ankle

19. Favourite thing about your favourite band ok my fav band would either be Day6 or the rose, for both I just really like their music like it sounds good and also got them angsty teen vibes also love their faces 

20. What’s your favourite thing about yourself? why? shit uh maybe like my ability to let everything slide off like i take things p lightly so its hard to make me upset/angry etc
