8am in Bull City
Once thing that can prevents me from going to sleep is the fact that my mind stays racing about stuff, especially the stressful stuff as the worse case scenarios run fucking rampant-- I am not a fan! These days its later nights going to bed and even earlier mornings all in my feelings. Woke up this morning in a glass case of emotion , Chile! (not this over exaggerated as depicted tho)
Tumblr media
To the moment where I simply closed my attempted to go back to sleep. Although, I didn't go back to sleep, the tears started to stream and it escalated. Eyes on bloodshot and nose on stuffed! One thing about me is contingent on the situation, I am sending emails, making phone calls-- whatever I am able to do to get back on track with some of the things that ultimately, STOPPED me in my tracks. I laid in the bed for a good period of time and they just started to stream! Due to a number of things that have been going on lately, I have been feeling like myself but not like myself. I haven't been in this position in a long time which I'm sure I stated in my last post but its true. I thank God that its not rock bottom and I do have options in sense but the type of person I am, I like to get it out the mud by myself. There is always someone unfortunately worse off than I am which I am grateful for.
Tumblr media
At this point I am trying to be on my Sounds of Blackness vibes and be optimistic, keep my head to the sky and know that its gonna get better. But, Im not gonna lie-- its easier said than done, so its more of just making it a mindset and in the words of Big Snow [ Jeezy for those under a rock, lol ] "You gotta believe!". I think in a way, I have been receiving signs by number and in a way that is apart of my not getting to a point of FUCK IT! lol. Before shit shifted, I woke up one morning in the middle of the night not being able to sleep. I happened to look at my phone and the time was 5:55am. I had to look it up as soon as...
Tumblr media
Google says, this number represents change, good luck, transformation, freedom and personal growth. After sometime, a recent purchase I made the total came up to 2244, which is the one that will be significant the most as this represents "you're on the right life path to achieve your goals. Your guardian angels want you to know that they've witnessed all of your hard work to get to where you are today and will reward you for it soon!" . This one made me smile as I think this from all 3 of mine but one in particular which made me smile-- no thug tears this time. The last one, which is funny, is from my Chick-fil-A app. I am a proud RED Member [ lol ] mainly b/c that is the only location near me worth my money because the other food places are trash! ... Sorry, getting off track! Anywhoooo, I open the app to see what reward I can take advantage of and the amount of rewards I have left-- 777. This one also represents a sign with what I read as having a spiritual significance. It is associated with not only personal growth but self-discovery, and inner wisdom. I read that seeing this, can be a message from angels or spiritual guides reminding me to trust intuition and follow life's purpose--tune out distractions and contemplate direction in life. With all these signs and messages, how could I con't to be in a state of sadness or anger. I have ppl watching my progress and mess and they are telling me, its gonna be ok--although, admittedly I have trouble convincing myself, I have some people or someone say "stop doubting it and know it!" makes me feel better...

Lets go! Day 1: Let’s learn HOW the frick to study
So this I think is the most important thing to do and really it is insane that in the United States (which is where I am from by the way) students have no idea on how to freaking study. Honestly all of this gets me incredibly frustrated because with the internet we have the ability to share information and I’ll tell you that I am one of those people who have scavenged the internet and picked apart what I could find. Here’s another big problem: not everything someone does will work for you.
Also just the spread of dumb study information is pretty terrible. If I do counter anything I will leave a paper or my citation just because I believe in putting down sources and showing others how to research and why citing is freakin important.
Let’s get started: I’m going to summarize everything that will be in here for a second
1. Find your method of studying, find out everything. AND I MEAN EVERYTHING. You need to write down how you study (the different types of study people) but also the classes because people study sciences different than humanities.
2. Find out your most productive state. If this means it is you at 2 am in a suit and jacket than that means you need to leave procrastination station and be studying during that time. Now I am not totally okay with people studying in a suit for one it is uncomfortable, I think a jeans and a clean tshirt is just as good. If you can be productive in sweatpants or pjs then go for it. I know I am not and it doesn’t work when I dress for relaxation.
Okay, I’ll be going into more in depth of mainly the first one but a bit of the second.
To start off the bat, if you have time watch this lecture https://youtu.be/IlU-zDU6aQ0 by Marty Lobdell. You have probably heard the saying before and one thing that makes me so frustrated within the study community is that others use this statment without giving any real examples. I feel like Lobdell does this as well as he doesn’t describe note taking and I do believe before putting down a material, you have to take notes. (All he mentions is handwriting notes and I do believe in that. You cannot really type notes and expect to learn the material).
Another source I would suggest is the Vark Quiz (https://vark-learn.com/the-vark-questionnaire/) Learn what type you are (I’m a Kinesthetic!) and read what they give you. I’m not going to say you will perfectly match with your description but if you are starting from ground zero, this is an amazing place to see what might work for you instead of you having to come up with different technques on your own.
I get so annoyed when people use the pomodoro method as a way to study. It is not a way to study. It is a way to schedule your study time. Also, I don’t think you can do much in 25 minutes or maybe it is just me. Usually I work for an hour or 50 minutes and then take a ten minute break. All you need to do is find out what works for you.
Okay let’s get into classes, first there is an amazing youtuber named Nathan Wu who made this video (https://youtu.be/pdAt8JhBnMU and there is a part 2 but I’ll let you guys find it). He is a very good study youtuber that I do like to watch sometimes and I do appriciate that he is spreading correct information. I can give you guys an example of what worked for me in some of my classes (I also just wanna say I won’t be putting my grades on here nor anything really. I don’t feel comfortable being compared to others because I already have to deal with it at my own institution and peers. Please don’t compare yourself to others).
Chemistry (Wu also does include this subject in his video):
- Write notes and explanations for the love of god. Like please just write notes.
- Also apply those notes. If you are confused in one area ask someone for help whether that be your teacher or someone else.
-I would say to use flashcards, but I’m honestly a big quizlet user (I haven’t used Anki I’m a little weird and I get so annoyed when I use something that is popular. I sadly give off the “i’m not like other girls vibe”). When I use quizlet every time I get an answer wrong I write down the definition. I can explain this more because you can do this with notecards as well and probably Anki but I like the mobility of quizlet.
-Labs... I do like doing some labs. I miss my older ones from Honors Chemistry, I barely do good labs in AP Chemistry, but at the same time you have to do them. This could be for any science class because knowing how to apply your information is the best way to test your knowledge that isn’t practice questions (If you need labs look up a virtual simulation. While it isn’t the same thing they are usually free and if not you can find some on youtube).
- Practice problems (this more or less goes with your grading point instead of studying. While I do believe the overall goal in studying is that you understand and can apply the topic tests are so different in many things). As stated before I have taken Honors Chemistry, so I used test prep from my teacher and was able to form questions similar to how she asked them on the quiz. In AP Chemistry I’ve been able to use the online resources from other teachers and AP Classroom. I will say AP Chemistry it is much harder to write my own questions because AP Chemistry is just really hard in general, but finding FRQ practices I believe is one of the best ways you can work on it (Honestly it may be just me but doing FRQs or written essays for answers is so much better than multiple choice because this allows you to practice giving explanations and learning where your gap of knowledge is).
Another study technique I like to do is called the Feynmann technique. This is such a great way to apply knowledge without doing test prep because you need to essentially master your subject before test prep. This method includes creating a study plan for someone else, you need to teach someone else (or something else) what you’re learning and have them ask questions. Know I know this doesn’t really work well for some people including myself because I don’t really have others to talk to when I study but talk to yourself. (sometimes I talk to a ghost or a plushie in my room. I have little trinkets on my desk of which a tiger egg and a Chick Fil A cow plushie wearing a sunflower dress. Just try it, it might seem weird but you got to). If you can’t have others ask you questions say everything you can remember (and maybe do this on a google doc with the voice chat box open, I would say record yourself but I hate hearing my own recordings). Then, once you have finished look through your notes and see what you got correct and what you got wrong. If you did use a google docs then write what you meant to say like: “I said this... but this was incorrect because of this...”
For study schedule or something related to studying I would say watch these videos: https://youtu.be/-m2Ua5Y0mzc and https://youtu.be/OYuhkaOPKcM. Both are by youtubers who I do like to watch and follow what they do. I would say to look through Alicia’s youtube a bit more if you like electronic organization AND the true studyblr (girl can do beautiful calligraphy). I believe I align more with Keo Tsang, who studies later at night rather than earlier than the morning. Tsang does get more hours of sleep than me (haha). If you are in high school please don’t do what he does though. I try to go to bed by midnight because then I’ll get six hours of sleep, and I can sleep on the bus (it takes me an hour to get to school). I also have a free first period where I can sleep if I need to or catch up on work from last night if I didn’t do it. I do like to work when there is sunlight but also coming home from school and taking a detox or a break is so much better for my mental health. I know it will be different when in university but I’d just say this to any high school student, please do a mental detox. Don’t go on social media and scroll endlessly maybe listen to some music, read a book, take a walk/run, my sister would bake after a long stressful day and her food- while not the best- got her in a good mood.
I think this is all I’ll write today. I still need to do so much work myself haha but I am a big procrastinator and also I did have a break down a little while ago. Just know you are worth everything and in the end, every problem is going to have some type of solution even if there is no solution. Your life doesn’t need to be answered today or tomorrow so let’s work on becoming better students one step at a time :)

---
Up until yesterday, it’s been months since you and Jeno have been in contact. Even though you go to the same school, you can’t help but think that he is avoiding you. If you’re going to be completely honest with yourself, he definitely is. Classic.
When you feel the slight pang of hurt ripple through your chest, you shake your head, trying to snap out of it. You rather not think about him right now. The 15 spotify playlists you embarrassingly curated denoting the emotional anguish of your most recent Jeno-filled-altercation was enough proof you’ve already spent too much time dwelling on this boy, who by the way, you’ve never even dated.
You have other things to worry about. College decisions are coming out soon, and it's absolutely imperative that you keep your grades in good standing. No school wants to accept a student just to find out that they’re a slacker. Better to be more upfront about you really are to the end, rather than to disappoint others later on.
Jeno’s idea of school is hitting his dab pen in the bathroom, and sitting through every class high. And apparently, his idea of romance is not doing anything about your ambiguous relationship, and telling you to break up with Jaemin after only a week into dating. It was unholy unfair to Jaemin, and it's not like he's had almost three years to tell you how he feels, only to always come whining to you when you’re with someone else. It was a little different last time though. This is your last year of high school, and you both know it. It’s unlikely you’ll ever have as much time to be with (or to avoid) him at such close proximity--you’re almost definitely going to college out of state. Jeno has told you many times your ass is smart enough to pull it off.
But that was months ago, things have since died down and there is no use dwelling on the past. You’ve cried enough tears, and you’re tired of waking up with puffy eyes that look like you have been stung by an angry bee hive because of it. According to Renjun, Jeno had stopped sulking in his library during his free period and started playing computer games with him again. See? It’s a thing of the past.
But that didn't stop you from occasionally calling him late at night in your many moments of weakness. I mean, it doesn’t really matter if you’re always met with a dial tone right? If he doesn’t pick up, it’s like you never called in the first place. The end always justifies the means.
You don’t know why it took you so long to figure out that if you really missed him that  much, you should have probably just shot him a text instead of randomly calling him in the middle of the night. Jeno, like with school, is never prepared for anything. Even if he picked up, he’d probably just stay silent. It happened that one time he actually did pick up, both of you silent, not knowing to say in the moment (silence could also hardly be considered a phone call).
Tumblr media
Looking down at your most recent conversation, you sigh. Even before things became so messed up, you valued his companionship. Things are obviously still tense between you two--you don’t know why you even try.  Jaemin wouldn’t be too happy about it either.
                                                                              ...
“It just makes me feel like shit when I hear people telling me like, ‘Oh you stole Jeno’s girl.’. You’re my girlfriend, not his.” Jaemin scoffs. His grip on the steering wheel tightens, along with his hold on your hand.
In an attempt to soothe your angry boyfriend, you rub your thumb over your interlaced fingers soothingly. “I know, I know. I can’t help it if we have history Jaemin, people like to talk.”
“I had a talk with Renjun the other day about you and Jeno, and all the shit he was saying. I thought he was my friend.”
Although he was good friends with both boys, Renjun was admittedly closer to Jeno than Jaemin and there was more to his actions than it seemed just though looking at the surface. He was your closest mutual friend to Jeno, and knew more than anyone about the complicated relationship between you two--maybe a little too well. He respected the decision you made, but it was clear that he thought things should have ended differently.
                                                                          …
When you first see Jeno outside of the glimpses you see in the school hallway, he looks different. His hair is styled differently, with the wispy blonde hair of his hair framing his forehead quite nicely.
Jeno’s eyes quickly flutter to the ground when you look at him, finding a sudden interest in the rocks on the ground. For a boy who treats his shoes like they’re his babies, he’s awfully unconcerned with the scuff marks that begin to appear on his Air Force Logos when he digs a rock into the ground.
“Where do you want to eat?” you ask, walking around him to open the passenger seat of his car.
Jeno looks like he regrets ever even agreeing to meet you for lunch in the first place, with his eyebrows furrowing and as indicated with the speed in which he gets in his new BMW.
“Chick-Fil-A.” He mumbles, pressing the start button on his car.
“Unbelievable. You want to go to Chick-Fil-A? ” you scoff. “We always go to Chick-Fil-A. Don’t you ever get tired of chicken?”
Granted, it’s been months since you’ve been there together, but you at least expected some variety. There’s been a lot of buzz about the Popeyes chicken sandwiches these days.
“No, but I get tired of you whining about my food choice when you asked for my opinion in the first place.”
And just like that, like old times, you both bicker on the car ride to Chick-Fil, this time about chicken sandwiches.
When you finally get to Chick-Fil-A, you manage to order your food without any major altercations, save a blazing glare you shoot Jeno when he says “Ranch is disgusting” when you ask for it to go with your nuggets.
As you sit down and dig into your food, you attempt to make small talk about your post high school plans.
“University of Buffalo?” you say with a mouthful of fries. “I thought you wanted to stay in state.”
“Yeah I do. But I thought it would be smart to keep some options open”
“Lee Jeno, keeping his options open? Being prepared?” you tease.
His cheeks flush in embarrassment, and you can’t help but admire how pretty he looks, with sunlight shining on his frame. His lashes are long, and with the way the light is hitting his face, his brown eyes are like pools of  dark honey.
Suddenly becoming hypersensitive to the boy in front of you, and you quickly change the subject.
“How’s your cousin Jinyoung? I haven’t seen him since I last visited your aunt’s restaurant. He was nice enough to me some free dishes off the menu. I told him he needs any help with his college applications he can ask me.”
Jeno stays quiet, picking at his food as you blab about his cousin. Although you’ve only met him once when he came to visit from New York City, he was a sweet boy and you guys kept in contact. Dismissing it as part of Jeno’s natural propensity towards being quiet, you chatter on for a little while longer until you ask him, “why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Jinyoung died four months ago.” He says in a low voice, lowering his gaze to his lap.
Although there were a handful of others eating their lunch in the restaurant, you can barely process the background chatter as a small noise begins to ring in your ears. “What happened?”
“He was diagnosed with cancer, but he didn’t really tell anyone, ” he said in between sips of his drink . “he was in remission for a while but it came back really bad.”
“He has a younger sister right? It must be hitting her really hard.”
Jeno stays quiet as you fall silent, fidgeting with your fingers on the wooden table. Both of you don’t have much to say as your eyes begin to water in the middle of a Chick-Fil-A.
Jeno places his hand over yours in comfort as he looks out the window. Life is short, and you can’t help but think how much time you have with him.
                                                                   ...
Weeks pass, and although Jaemin isn’t exactly overjoyed about the fact that you’ve been seeing Jeno regularly again, he accepts it as what he understands it is--two friends reconciling and just hanging out, which you are eternally grateful for. The issue is that being friends with Jeno is never being just friends. You two have too much history for that. Everyday, the bottled feelings left unresolved over the years are at risk of exploding at any moment--it’s only a matter of time.
You know you’ve got it bad when you find yourself checking your phone for his messages, or smiling at the thought of him. It’s everything--from the way he picks you up in minutes after an argument with your mom, to the way he drapes his heavy lined jean jacket over you during a particularly cold night.  No matter how hard you tried to suppress it, or how much you thought it would work, it was already over from the start. Even earlier when you two acted like strangers and the days you never even thought onnce about him, he was still in your dreams at night. But this time, Jeno is very much real, and alive in the flesh in front of you. And you don’t know if you want to admit to yourself that these feelings for Jeno are also very much real.
You finally decide to tell him when college decisions come out, after you get into your dream University. Graduation was nearing and it meant new beginnings. No matter how deeply rooted Jeno was in your heart, you needed to let go of the things that were holding you back. At least, it's what you’re telling yourself.
“Jeno...” your voice falters, “I can’t keep doing this with you..”
There’s an unspoken understanding between you two as Jeno runs his fingers through your hair to soothe you, and tells you not to cry while you cry. It’s the middle of the night when you tell him you love him. You should be home. You should be with Jaemin.
On the car ride home, Jeno stays silent.
                                                              …
Jeno calls you when you get home to check on you. When you start to cry again he stays silent for a moment.“Don’t be sad’ he murmurs. We have a lifetime to figure things out.”
You only cry harder at his words.
When your sniffles begin to subside, and you’re sound asleep in no time (not a surprise to Jeno, considering all the emotional turmoil you’ve faced tonight) Jeno sighs. He can’t help but feel selfish. Every time you tell him you want nothing more for him to be happy, Jeno’s moral compass can’t help but tear a little at the seams. You seem unaware that to him, happiness is being with you. But Jeno can’t have you. He knows that. They say that if you really love something, you need to let it go. But this is something he isn’t ready to let go of just yet.
A few weeks ago when you two went out to eat, he notices that he always lets you choose the song on the way there, and what you want from the menu.
“You know all the things we’re ordering are yours right?”
You begin to apologize, but you’re soon distracted by the special drink menu the waiter drops on the table.
When your eyes light up at the silly lightbulb boba drink you plan to take home to  your sister, Jeno just sighs and pays for the meal.
On the car ride home, your shared favorite songs play, and he doesn’t say a word to you. Jeno isn’t the best driver, and you vocalize that by nearly blowing his ear off when he brakes a little too fast at the red stop light. When you grab his hand for support, he lingers a little longer before he lets go. Like usual, he panders around your neighborhood when your house draws close, purposely taking the long way home. Jeno thinks about it some more when he waits for you to walk through the door of your house before driving off.
Jeno always tells you he loves you when it’s too late. When you get your first boyfriend, he gets a girlfriend and tries to forget about you. It’s painfully obvious how he feels when he not so jokingly tells you to dump that “skinny bean pole” for him. He hates himself for taking you for granted when you broke up with said boyfriend around the time his girlfriend dumps him, telling him “I know you just aren’t happy”. For telling Renjun “Don’t worry about it, I know she loves me.” when he tried to warn him about Jaemin’s budding romance with you, even pleaded for him to make his move. It seems that everyone knows what to do with his feelings better than himself, and all he knows how to do is reap the consequences.
He usually doesn’t have much to say. But tonight, over the phone, he tells you that he loves you. He tells you that he sees you in his future, and to him, you’re like no other. Jeno tells you that he knows you never meant to hurt him, but he’s been hurting for a while, and he can’t stand to see you with someone else.
But you’re asleep, and you can’t hear him. For the longest time, Jeno has wanted so badly to show you his whole heart. This situation you two are in  isn’t what he wants and he knows you feel the same. He wants to stop being on his Mac Demarco shit, to man up and tell you clearly how he really feels, and maybe, have you be his girlfriend, you know-- instead of messing with some other guy’s girl.
Even through all of this, Jeno has learned a little secret about love. To love you was never about having you.
                                                                ...
Twirling in your red dress, your arm wraps around Jaemin’s neck. It’s prom, and graduation is right around the corner.  Smiling, you think to yourself that you have finally succeeded, the end is near. Laughing, gazing, looking up at a face smiling back. But for a split second, you don’t see Jaemin’s face in front of you. You see Jeno.
The memory of the first day, when his laugh over the phone meant something more to you. His voice brings about some of the happiest times you’ve ever known. Memories of the small moments--late nights--a soft smile--a teasing voice--the warm heat on your face in the midst of a teasing comment, and a boy with a subtle charm to find the way through.
Spontaneous trips and laughter, the occasional periods of silence when the both of you were fed up--people who understood you two, but only enough to get in the way.
The light nod of your head when it first found its way to your shoulder, and the dull feeling of yearning it left when it was gone.
You’re at a children’s playground, and you whine about wanting to fly a kite even though you’re nearly 18. Jeno teases you for being a kid, and for even trying when there was hardly any wind out. When you suggest that he run from behind and try to fly the kite with you, you scold him for the third time that it would only work if he ran slower than you. Jeno laughs and you feel your heart tug a little.
You’re devastated, and when Jaemin asks you if something is wrong, all you do is rest your face in the crook of his neck. You don’t want him to see you crying. You hate yourself for doing this to him. You’re not really a religious person, but sometimes at night, staring into the darkness and slightly trembling, you ask God to make it stop. It hurts. You don’t know how it feels for Jeno. You knew every decision you would make wouldn’t be fair to anyone. What do you do? How will you know? Will you ever know?
You don’t want to admit that might have known all along. You know you’ve known all along. To you, there is no one like Jeno. There is no one like him you’ve ever met that has made you feel this way, and if you weren’t with him, then you would spend your entire life searching in vain. You want to be with him so badly, that when you think about it, your heart grows impossibly heavy. But at the same time, you feel free. The timing is never right. You’re with the wrong people. You’re doing it all wrong. He’s doing it all wrong. We’re doing it all wrong.
You can’t stop thinking about him in the most difficult way. When you suppress him consciously, he shows up in your dreams, smiling, glowing. Ruffled hair, eye smile and all. You can’t help but think about him every night, and when you see something that reminds you of him. Jeno reminds you of everything sad, everything hard, and at the same time, everything easy. He makes your heart feel so heavy, but also at peace. When he told you that you two had a lifetime to figure it out, you want to believe that if it was meant to be, it would happen. But that’s the hardest part. You don’t know what will happen.
Right now, you know one thing, and you know that you love him. You love him so much it brings you to tears. It makes your hands tremble, your body tremble, your heart tremble. You have such a love for Jeno that even if it wasn’t meant to be you wouldn’t care. You want Jeno to be happy. You want him to be healthy, not do stupid shit, and you want him so badly to love you too, and it would be okay if that didn’t happen. You’ve been delaying it-- you always say to yourself and everyone else you need time. You’ll sit on it, think about it, leave it for later. But it’s been months, and years, and you’re right back at the starting point.
Everytime you tried to convince yourself you weren’t in love, it felt like a dark shadow would cast over you. Because every time you tried to convince yourself you weren’t in love, you realized every bit of you knew you were.
Jeno is your best friend, part of your happiness, and he is your first real love. It’s something you can say with a certainty you’ve never had before.
                                           …
Jeno can feel his heart tear into shreds when he sees you and Jaemin so close. You look beautiful. So beautiful. You’re going away to your dream college and he’ll be many, many miles away from you. Jeno’s cheeks prickle with warmth as his eyes begin to dappen. His heart sinks, just to bobble back up with an expected disbelief. He thought he knew what was coming.
“There are other things to do without me.” he had told you in the car that night, but the truth is, Jeno doesn’t want to do anything without you. He’s loved you since he met you, and he’s not quite sure that will ever change.
It always hurts. but that's because love isn't perfect, Jeno thinks. He may move on days from now, maybe weeks from now, and could realize he never really loved you.
If he truly loves you, it's never going to be okay, but it will get better. It will get easier. He will be able to go on.
You might creep into his mind years from now when he finally thought he was over you.
And that's okay, that's what love is.
It's when his memories come back to him 5 years later, when he wonders how you're doing, maybe if you think about him a little too. But it won't hurt nearly as much and he will realize all that heartbreak did something to heal him.
It's always hard, he thinks, as he walks out of the Prom venue. But he promises himself that it will always get easier.

The top 100 games of the 2017-18 college football season
We move closer to the top, this time counting down 40-11.
We did it. After 834 regular season games, 40 bowl games, 4,376 Nick Saban scowls, and one hell of a national championship game, the college football season is over. To remember and honor the season that was, I (along with a little help from the rest of the SB Nation college football crew) am going to count down the best 100 games of the season. We’ll unveil 30 games at a time on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, then count down the top 10 on Friday.
100 - 71
70 - 41
40 - 11
10 - 1 (Fri.)
Let’s get to the list:
40. Oct. 21: Oklahoma 42, Kansas State 35
After 41 combined points in the first three quarters of Kansas State’s homecoming battle with Oklahoma, the teams scored 36 in the fourth alone. On three occasions, OU took a touchdown lead, but the Sooners had to time the last one — a 22-yard Rodney Anderson run with seven seconds left — to make sure KSU didn’t have a chance to respond.
39. Sept. 29: Washington State 30, USC 27
USC nearly survived the regular season with national title hopes intact, except for a Friday night trip.
Ronald Jones’ 86-yard run helped the Trojans stake a 17-10 lead, but Washington State took a 27-20 lead on Jamal Morrow’s 23-yard reception in the final period. USC tied, but Morrow’s 35-yarder — WSU’s longest run of the entire season — set up Erik Powell’s field goal.
Dreams die in Pullman.
38. Oct. 28: Nebraska 25, Purdue 24
This was a good season for Purdue, with the Boilermakers rising to a bowl win in a single season under Jeff Brohm.
And this was a bad one for Nebraska, as the Huskers finished with four wins for the first time since 1962, the final year before Bob Devaney showed up to resurrect the program.
On the final Saturday in October, roles reversed. Bad-year Nebraska, facing a 24-12 deficit in the fourth quarter, surged by good-year Purdue.

37. Sept. 3: Virginia Tech 31, West Virginia 24
by Alex Kirshner:
This was so good that it overcame being played in one of the worst stadiums in a league neither of these teams plays in. Thousands of fans had to skip tailgates or cram them in just before kickoff.
But once they were inside, Appalachian football’s biggest reunion of the season turned out to be a great one. West Virginia’s Will Grier aired the ball out all night, and Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Josh Jackson announced himself. Grier almost threw a touchdown in the final seconds to tie, but Tech held on with a fourth-down stop.
Virginia Tech took a lot of pride in hoisting the rivalry’s Black Diamond Trophy at midfield, with ex-coach Frank Beamer in the celebration at the start of a season that would end with his selection to the College Football Hall of Fame.
But nobody saw it, because they left to try and beat traffic.
36. Sept. 4: Tennessee 42, Georgia Tech 41
by Steven Godfrey:
This was as functional, effective, and entertaining as Tennessee would be in 2017. The Volunteers gave up 41 points and 655 yards to a team that would limp to 5-6, and the only reason the Vols escaped is because Tech made a bad read on a two-point conversion in OT. This game was the high-water mark.

35. Sept. 9: New Mexico State 30, New Mexico 28 34. Dec. 2: New Mexico State 22, South Alabama 17 33. Dec. 29: New Mexico State 26, Utah State 20
If you’re a loyal Podcast Ain’t Played Nobody listener (and if you aren’t, why not?), you know that I announced my pet cause as rooting for New Mexico State to reach a bowl and end a 57-year drought.
It began with a wild catch and a rivalry win in Albuquerque ...
youtube
... and ended with back-to-back field stormings. First, NMSU took down South Alabama to reach six wins and qualify for the Arizona Bowl.
youtube
Then, the Aggies beat Utah State in overtime.
youtube
If you watch this and still want to tell me there are too many bowls, then forgive me for the snide words. New Mexico State’s run was the best thing about college football in 2017.
32. Nov. 4: Wyoming 16, Colorado State 13
Fell for the okie-doke there. @wyo_football rips off a huge 40-yard-run to get into scoring position. http://pic.twitter.com/BeuXCwYBCM
— CBS Sports Network (@CBSSportsNet) November 5, 2017
Glorious.
31. Oct. 13: Syracuse 27, Clemson 24 30. Nov. 4: Clemson 38, NC State 31
On Oct. 13, Dabo Swinney’s retooled squad headed to upstate New York with a banged-up quarterback. Kelly Bryant struggled, then got hurt again in the second quarter; backup Zerrick Cooper did no better.
Syracuse dictated the terms, but Tanner Muse’s 63-yard fumble return kept the champs close, and Travis Etienne’s 52-yard run tied the game heading into the fourth quarter. Syracuse’s Eric Dungey (278 yards, three touchdowns) engineered a final field goal drive. Storm the field.
Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports
Three weeks later, NC State led at halftime in Raleigh, until the Tigers seemed to put the game away with a 21-7 run keyed by Tavien Feaster’s 89-yard score. But State cut the lead to 38-31 with under two minutes left and forced a three-and-out.
Ryan Finley completed three passes to work the ball inside the Tiger 30, then hit this fourth-down pass.
Only ... that’s an illegal shift at the bottom. On a fourth-down do-over, Clemson ended the game with a pick.
29. Nov. 25: SMU 41, Tulane 38
Literally as close to bowl eligibility as possible.
SMU Football Video
28. Oct. 28: Northwestern 39, Michigan State 31
Northwestern won three consecutive overtime games on its way to an eight-game winning streak. It took three OT periods for the Wildcats to put away a Michigan State ranked 16th at the time. It also took a play in which State’s Brian Lewerke both fumbled and threw an interception.
27. Dec. 28: TCU 39, Stanford 37 26. Dec. 29: Wake Forest 55, Texas A&M 52
Alamo Bowl Second Half TCU is one of the greatest teams ever. Two years after completing a 31-point Alamo comeback against Oregon (the second-best game of 2015), the Horned Frogs turned a 12-point deficit into a win against Stanford. Jalen Reagor’s 93-yard catch and run made it 31-29, then Desmon White’s 76-yard punt return gave the Frogs the lead. Stanford went ahead again, but Cole Bunce’s 33-yard field goal sealed the deal. And there’s always a shirt change involved when TCU’s unleashing a comeback.
The next day in Charlotte, Wake and A&M had a track meet. Despite a 31-0 mid-game run, Wake trailed in the fourth. But the final two drives of quarterback John Wolford’s career were touchdowns. The Demon Deacons needed both. After A&M responded, the Deacs went 69 yards and won on Matt Colburn’s short score.
25. Oct. 7: Miami 24, Florida State 20
Six seconds left, seven-game Florida State winning streak against Miami on the line, Malik Rosier to Darrell Langham.
24. Oct. 7: Navy 48, Air Force 45
Nuts from the get-go.
Navy scored on runs of 91 and 75 yards.
Air Force scored on passes of 51 and 59.
Navy went up 28-7, then Air Force scored four touchdowns in 18 minutes to take a 45-41 lead with under two minutes left.
Too much time on the clock.
youtube
23. Nov. 11: Alabama 31, Mississippi State 24
Alabama nearly fell victim to the SEC’s Bulldogs, blowing a chance to finish a comeback with a field goal but scoring a huge touchdown by little-used freshman DeVonta Smith.
I’m not talking about the national title game. I’m talking about two months earlier in Starkville.
Mississippi State played brilliant ball control, held Bama to 56 snaps, and led most of the way. But the Tide tied in the fourth and survived when, on that 56th snap, Jalen Hurts hit Smith for a 26-yard catch and run. MSU couldn’t complete a Hail Mary.
Smith had seven catches all year. Two were game-winners.
22. Oct. 14: Boston College 45, Louisville 42
Between mid-November 2014 and mid-October 2017, Boston College scored more than 30 on an FBS opponent just twice. Over the final six games of the 2017 regular season, the Eagles did it five times. And their hot streak began with a perfect foil: Lamar Jackson.
Louisville led 21-7 in the first half, and BC had punted on four of its first six possessions. But freshman AJ Dillon scored with 51 seconds left in the second quarter, then twice in the second half. His 75-yard run gave BC a stunning 42-28 lead with 12 minutes left, but Jackson’s 41-yard score tied the game back up.
The Cardinals were driving with under two left when Kamrin Moore recovered a fumble. Seven Dillon rushes — he had 39 for 272 yards — set up a kick at the buzzer.

— BC Eagles (@BCEagles) October 14, 2017
21. Oct. 7: Michigan State 14, Michigan 10 20. Nov. 4: Michigan State 27, Penn State 24
By Jason Kirk:
TCU in the second half of an Alamo Bowl. Michael Jordan with a dubious illness. Lil Wayne in the late aughts. Mark Dantonio in disgusting weather.
Knowing of the MSU coach’s powers made the Michigan game ominous. The Wolverines surely knew they’d need a comfortable lead — in this series: roughly five points — before the forecasted rain arrived. But the Spartans gained a 14-3 lead and docked the tugboat, then pointed and laughed as Michigan kept passing in a downpour.
One month later, the Nittany Lions were doomed once lightning forced a delay. Their fate dimmed as the delay reached three hours, with players sustained by emergency pizza and Chick-fil-A. Seven hours after the first kick, Matt Coghlin hit the last one and splashed across wet turf.
NEVER DOUBTED HIM FOR A MINUTE! http://pic.twitter.com/z4jGFVNgLc
— The Only Colors (@TheOnlyColors) November 4, 2017
19. Dec. 9: Army 14, Navy 13
by Steven Godfrey:
In 2016, Army broke Navy’s 14-game winning streak in the series, but this season was Jeff Monken’s true proof of concept win over the Midshipmen. Navy wasn’t down to a third string QB this time, and for the first time in decades (literally, decades!) the two service academies looked like equals.
18. Nov. 4: Oklahoma 62, Oklahoma State 52 17. Nov. 18: Kansas State 45, Oklahoma State 40
The two most exhausting shootouts in Big 12 play took place in Stillwater.
First, you had the most bedlam of all Bedlam matchups. After only one of the first four possessions resulted in points, OU and OSU scored on 11 of the next 12. At halftime, the teams had combined for 76 points and 645 yards.
Marquise Brown’s 77-yard TD made it 55-45 OU, but OSU drove 75 yards to cut the lead again. When Chad Whitener picked off a Baker Mayfield pass in the end zone with three minutes left, OSU had a chance to steal it. But a fourth-and-8 pass from the OU 38 fell incomplete, and Trey Sermon’s 53-yard run put the game away.
Baker Mayfield on why he wasn’t going crazy celebrating tonight: “Winning around here is expected. Winning against Oklahoma State is expected.”
— Max Olson (@max_olson) November 5, 2017
Two weeks later, OSU still had its sights on a major bowl when 5-5 Kansas State came to town. The Cowboys led 10-7 when Byron Pringle struck. He had four scores of 47 or more yards, all on seven touches. And with 20 minutes left, KSU had a 45-20 lead.
It almost wasn’t enough. Three OSU touchdowns in five minutes made it 45-40 with four minutes left, and after a KSU three-and-out, the Pokes had the ball with a chance to win.
16. Sept. 9: Georgia 20, Notre Dame 19
Jake Fromm’s first start began what nearly became a national title run. The Dawgs relied on their defense, and it worked, in part because of a late Rodrigo Blankenship field goal and this absurd Terry Godwin catch on a third-and-goal.
15. Nov. 11: Boise State 59, Colorado State 52
After a 2-2 start that featured a confusing blowout loss to Virginia, Boise State caught fire. The Broncos would win nine of 10, but their mid-November trip to Fort Collins nearly went awry. It typically does when you spot a talented home team a 28-3 advantage.
The Broncos needed all 60 minutes to cut Colorado State’s lead to zero. Alex Mattison’s 70-yard run made it 35-24 early in the third, and Sean Modster’s 13-yard reception made it 52-45 with 1:41 remaining. Star receiver Cedrick Wilson recovered an onside kick, and five plays later, the game was tied.
In OT, Mattison gave Boise the advantage, but CSU was in position until Leighton Vander Esch forced a fumble at the Boise 5. Comeback complete.
14. Oct. 7: WMU 71, Buffalo 68
At some point, you go from wishing a game would end to praying it never does. You’d have to ask the 17,048 in attendance at UB Stadium where that line was, but I’m guessing it was somewhere around the fourth overtime.
It looked as if this would be a routine road win for the defending MAC champion. But Buffalo caught back up, and a field goal with 34 seconds left sent the game to OT. And OT, and OT, and OT, and OT, and OT, and OT.
The teams traded TDs in each of the first two overtime periods, then went scoreless in the third. Each scored touchdowns with two-point conversions in the fourth, then each missed NCAA-mandated two-pointers in the fifth and sixth. When Buffalo settled for a field goal in OT No. 7, it opened the door, and Franklin ran through it.
The funniest part: It was over in four hours and 31 minutes, only 15 minutes longer than Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, which didn’t go to OT.
13. Dec. 23: USF 38, Texas Tech 34
Eleven seconds left in the Birmingham Bowl, and USF has trailed for most of the game. Quinton Flowers’ last pass:
College football is going to miss the hell out of Flowers. And no, this isn’t his last appearance on this list.
12. Dec. 23: Army 42, San Diego State 35
by Steven Godfrey:
How good is Army? SDSU, one of the most talented G5 programs in the nation, finished with 10 wins, two wins over Pac-12 teams, a No. 34 ranking in overall S&P+, and losses to only the Mountain West’s division champs and ... Army.
You almost certainly didn’t see this game because it was crammed into a holiday afternoon, but after SDSU’s great Rashaad Penny scored his fourth touchdown to give the Aztecs a 35-28 lead with under six minutes, the Black Knights drove 72 yards like a wood chipper welded to a go cart.
Emotional wins over other services academies are comfort food, but this was different. Army beat a really good team, full stop.
11. Dec. 2: UCF 62, Memphis 55
In September, UCF crushed Memphis, 40-13. That was the third of seven straight double-digit wins to start the Knights’ season.
By the end, Memphis was ready for a rematch. The Tigers won seven in a row to win the AAC West and a conference title shot in Orlando.
UCF built a 17-7 lead, but Memphis responded, going on a 24-7 run. It was 34-31, Memphis, when UCF went on a 17-0 run. But the Tigers again responded, tying with 4:13 left and picking off McKenzie Milton at the end of regulation.
Memphis kicked off OT with a 15-yard strike from Riley Ferguson to star Anthony Miller. UCF responded, then scored first in OT No. 2. After a huge fourth-and-7 catch by Miller, Tre Neal picked off Ferguson at the UCF 4 to clinch a New Year’s bid.
Check back tomorrow as we unveil the top 10 games of the year.

News Nuggets from Around Disney World
It’s time again for a hearty helping of Rope Drop [dot] Net News Nuggets! As you probably saw earlier this week, I have already posted about the Star War related news that came out of Celebration. Of course, the biggest news since the last post was that The Rock was on the Jungle Cruise!. Talk a “plus-ed” experience.
Nuggets!!
Now, on to the rest of the News Nuggets:
Planet Hollywood Observatory to create outdoor, quick-service counter at Walt Disney World Resort – If the rumors are true that Plant Hollywood has their donkey-sauced burger pre-made, then they might as well try to offload them as kickin’ “quick service” options as well.
First Look at Menu for Satu’li Canteen in Pandora—The World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom – The menu seems interesting, but even more interesting is the Mobile Ordering feature. I would hope that in 5 years, all Disney quick service restaurants have mobile ordering. Speaking of which…
Full List of 15 Walt Disney World Restaurants That Will Offer Mobile Ordering Starting Soon – This has potential to be fantastic. I can’t even list the number of times that mobile ordering has made my Chick-Fil-A or Starbucks experience significantly better. I hope Disney’s implementation of this works just as well.
First Listen: Sneak a Peek at Our ‘Happily Ever After’ Theme Song – Huh. The clip of this song isn’t exactly what I was hoping for from the new show. Maybe it’ll be better in context.
Disney-Pixar’s “Cars 3” Nationwide Tour Kicks off at Disney Springs – Denise over at Mouse Steps has coverage of the “tour” the will be promoting the new movie. It include replicas of the cars, games, etc… Not really my thing, but I can see why people would really like it.
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” screening, Headless Horseman meet-and-greet Fort Wilderness for Halloween – Huh. Interesting. Another thing not really up my alley, but interesting nonetheless.
Bob Iger’s Contract Extended to July 2, 2019 – These kind of corporate maneuverings are not usually something I write about, but Iger has had an “interesting” relationship with the parks. To date, I would argue there have been some negatives (e.g., the trend of “up charge events”, lower staffing during certain periods), but we’re about to start on some big changes (e.g. Avatar, Star Wars, Toy Story), so it should be interesting.
Virtual tours of Copper Creek Villas – I’ve previously said this is where Elyssa & I might buy DVC, but that was before I saw the maintenance dues.
Registration Now Open for Annual Passholder Previews of Pandora: The World of AVATAR – If you’re an AP holder, you probably already got an email about this (and hopefully booked it…since it’s sold out.)
Mission Space at Epcot Closing This Summer for Refurbishment – I wonder what’s going on. June 5th through July 31st is a pretty strange time for a refurb.
‘The Music of Pixar Live!’ Will Debut at Disney’s Hollywood Studios This Summer – This seems like a summer holding area for crowds waiting for the night time entertainment when so much of the park is under construction.
Learn From the Pros How to Decorate Your Own Cake at Amorette’s Patisserie at Disney Springs – $130 is a lot to pay to decorate a cake (even if Amorette’s is pretty tasty.)
Pandora – Everything You Need To Know – I’m going to leave this here, since I don’t do an “info dump” nuggets. This is a pretty comprehensive rundown from the TouringPlans gang.
Disney testing Virtual Queues at its Walt Disney World water parks – Just like Volcano Bae!
Portobello at Disney Springs Closing April 23 For Refurbishment – No surprise here. All previously existing restaurants at Disney Springs need to upgrade to compete with the new comers. The big surprise is that nothing has happened to Bongos yet.
News: Liberty Tree Tavern Menu Updates (And Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake for DINNER!) – Does this mean all you care to enjoy ooey gooey toffee cake for dinner?
STK Orlando now offers brunch, including The Ultimate Brunch For Two – The menu looks fine. That said, it stil takes place in STK (which isn’t really the environment Elyssa and I like when we’re at Disney).
pictures from WDW Magic – Here are some
Walt Disney World Gondola System Foundation Construction About to Begin – This is really going to maybe, possibly happen, huh?
New My Disney Experience app Launches, Makes Planning Walt Disney World Vacations Even Easier – I like the concept, but the execution is funky. Standard app conventions say the menu is on the left and you use the “hamburger” icon to open it. This menu launched from the bottom is strange.
Limited Spaces Remain for Member Event at Markham’s at Golden Oak – Yes, $130 is a lot for this event, but it would be cool to hang out in the Golden Oaks club house.
Typhoon Lagoon Moonlight Magic registration now open for DVC Members with Reservations – If you’re DVC and staying at a DVC on June 23, 28 or July 5, 13, you can register now.
Countdown to Pandora – The World of Avatar Continues with First Look at Na’vi Translator Device – Ignore the actual item, and check out the lack of Disney branding on it. It will be interesting to see how that concept applies throughout the land.
Take A Behind-the-Scenes Look At The Making Of ‘Happily Ever After’ – I am really apprehensive about this show, and I still haven’t seen anything that eases that. I hope the final product ends up looking better than the stuff in the clips they’ve released.
New Shirts from Star Wars: The Last Jedi to support UNICEF – Elyssa doesn’t love the look, but–at least–it’s for a good cause.
Leaked (?) Photos from Inside Pandora – The World of Avatar – WDW News Today reposts photos for a guy who is MUCH braver than I am. (I would never blast my Twitter handle against something like that.)
Tree of Life Awakenings Projection Show is Expanding to the Back of the Animal Kingdom Icon – This could be useful in spreading people throughout the park as it starts to be open later at night.
Magic Kingdom Party Dates – 53 dates is a lot of dates.
Light up your visit to the Epcot China Pavilion with a new photo prop from Disney PhotoPass Service – I like these little touches. They’re not particularly complicated, but they do make for some interesting new photos.
Rumors of TRON Lightcycle Power Run Roller Coaster being Close to Green Light for Walt Disney World, Disneyland – The problem with rumors like this is that you never know if 10 different sites are citing the same “source,” are places like WDW New Today and Jim Hill actually hearing it from different places.
Fittings & Fairings Gift Shop at Disney’s Yacht Club Temporarily Closed – Something to keep in mind for those staying at the Yacht Club (though there are plenty of options around Crescent Lake for similar things.)
Ample Hills Creamery extending hours for the next month. – Ample Hills is going to be open until 11:00pm just in time for Elyssa’a and my arrival.
Rumors of Groot and Star Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy Coming to The Studios – I hope this is better than the Doctor Strange thing. Also, I wish Disney World was getting Gamora.
Sign Up Now For The runDisney Virtual Running Shorts Series – Elyssa and I do 1 (or more) runDisney events per year, and–I admit–I did this last year. I just wanted the medals (which I thought looked cool.) I’m not sure I’ll ever do it again (and definitely not for these medals.)
Four Seasons now selling homes on Walt Disney World property starting at $5 million – But they’ll probably be like only 2-3 million on the resale market, right?
Grab-and-Go Menu Available at Art Smith’s Homecomin’! – Something to keep in mind if you’re walking around Disney Springs. The to-go menu is available from the Shine Bar (which has a separate entrance you can use.)
Dry weather limits certain activities at Disney World. – Something to keep in mind if you’ll be down there before Central Florida gets some rain.
‘Happily Ever After’ To Feature The Most Advanced Projection Mapping Tech Yet – Disney is really trying to talk up this show. I hope it’s a winner, since people are going to really expect something big if it’s going to replace Wishes.
Club 33 announced for Walt Disney World, coming soon to 4 new locations – Something to aspire to, I guess. I wonder when I should put my name on the waiting list to have the opportunity to buy in about the time I’ll be able to afford it.
Walt Disney World’s Uber-Like Transportation Service Slated to Begin Soon – Two Questions: (1) Will it be comparable in cost to Uber?, (2) Will Disney ban Uber & Lyft from property to encourage people to use it?
Martha’s Vineyard Review at Disney’s Beach Club from easyWDW. – I don’t normally post reviews like this in the News Nuggets, but I found this review of Martha’s “Graveyard” to be interesting for it’s overall positive tone. At a minimum, Josh has a good tip that the beer selection is pretty decent.
Walt Disney World Plans to Hire 1,000 New Cast Members This Spring – This seems a lot more promising than last year’s staff cuts, etc… (which were rumored to be a result of Shanghai Disney going over budget.)
That’s it for this edition of the News Nuggets! Let’s all celebrate by watching the Blue Angels fly over the Magic Kingdom:
