Note
Have to say I'm not big on how some fans treat Simon as the worst person in Infinity train mainly due to how disadvantaged he is; mentally ill, poor, uneducated, underage & no family. Plus how many of the people who hate & demonize Simon as "the man" & "Cis-Het homophobe" like Amelia who is not only white, but rich, perfectly normal, educated & elderly, knowingly doing wrong including causing the traumatic events in Simon's backstory. Simon's not a good kid, but he deserves some sympathy.
Oh yeah I agree that he deserves some amount of sympathy and he is not the only flawed character but on a personal level he just like. unsettles me. cause I’ve been in situations where toxic people have clung to me all while I’m trying to help them improve, but they don’t want to change. I’ve been that person who says “well, they’ve had a hard life, it’s not their fault” and tried to reach out only to get bitten cause the person I’m trying to help doesn’t wanna be helped. When Grace told Simon she didn't owe him anything like. That hit home. Because she doesn't, and neither did I. Time and time again, Grace reaches out to Simon, tries to explain things to him, saves his life, but he doesn’t want to be saved. He knows what he’s doing is hurting people, but he doesn’t want to stop, he has convinced himself he can't stop. His story is a tragedy, but the impact he makes on the other people (Tuba, Hazel, Grace) in his life can't go unnoticed. That moment in the New Apex where he takes advantage of Grace's kindness in saving his life and tries to kill her says it all I think. As for Amelia, she's a whole different story. I wouldn't call her normal, she's just as traumatized as Simon is (I mean, she's a woman in a scientific field in the 1960's jfgjkk). And she's done horrible things, things a lot worse than Simon has. But, right now in the story, she's making an effort to change and on a personal level that's why she doesn't upset me as much. Amelia knows what she did was wrong, and she's actively trying to fix it. I don't think Amelia is a good person at all, and I'm not sure she ever will be. But she's making the conscious decision to get better.
#also i feel like simon being a white man and grace being a woman of color does impact their stories so it makes some sense for it to#be brought up in fandom conversations#i absolutely adored simon until like episode 5 he was my favorite because i was like omg yes king change 4 the better :)!!#but then i realized he wasnt gonna change because he doesnt want to and i was like. huh.#maybe i should reevaluate some of my own relationships gfkjhgf#asks for em#simon laurent#amelia hughes#grace monroe#infinity train#also im in a better place rn and have better friends which is why im ok with talking about it

About bridgerton season 2
i was planning in watch one episode each day so i would streeech my joy but nope, i got covid and im trapped in my house with only Netflix as my company so i binged watch the entire season in one morning and then sleep for 16 hours because my body was tyred soooo i have so many toughts about the new season. spoilers by the way!!
1.- The cast for Edwina and Kate is absolutely perfect i adore the sisters
2.- I disagree with a lot of people about the subplots, i really enjoy the mayority of them, in fact my complain is that Eloise plot didnt last long enought... did she get feminist friends?? did she get political about women rights? i just hate that her feminist political plot derive in she been friend with a guy for who she may o may not have romantic feelings... come on! this is bridgerton if you want to add romance add real romance, if you want to get political do political stuff, we cut out before the meetings, we didnt saw the content of the political propaganda... And talking about Eloise
3.- Im really really glad that she found out about Penelope, im glad the she call her out for ruining Marina life, i know that in the books no one find out until the four book and that is Collin the first one but i think Ms Wiselton is fundamentaly diferent in the tv show; in the books she is pretty much harmless, more like a frame divise, in the tv show she hold so much power and influence, is good, it would add drama later, and at the end of the day we want drama.
4.- I love lady feaderinton (i have no idea how to speel her name dont hate me im still sick ) Penelope´s mom, and her little dseudo romance with her husband´s cousin, it was unexpected but fun, i wich it would be a real full romance! come netflix!! this is bridgerton! and they are the kind of the bad guys! let Lady feaderinton have an affair with her death husband´s cousin/ daughter fiance! that the kind of thing we expect for you!
5.- My favorite episode was the wedding episode, LIKE YES EDWINA YOUR FIANCE IS IN LOVE WITH YOUR SISTER, ouch that must hurt, i loooooove that she didn´t forgive her right away, like you could feel the presure poor edwina have over her, she had to be sweet and perfec, she had to married well, i like that she put herself first, what i really hate is that the TV show cut her love story, in the books she is in love with an scholar, i hope the show expand on that, maybe she had a secret relationship while she was with Antony, we could have a dramatic moment when she finish the relationship with the scholar after the proposal, i don´t understeand why the cut that, it could provide SO MUCH DRAMA
6.- I don´t know why but i hate much of the camera movement this season, must of the dramatic escene where blurry and unfocus... was netflix?? or what just my head?
7.- Kate and Antony quemistry was off the chart o my god!! but i must admit, episode 6 and 7 drag the hole thing a little bit, like yes you two love eachoters, your sister alredy dumb him please end my mysery and be together!!
8.- They change so many things, must i can understeand but why cut Antony fear of death?? like in the Books he is so afraid of diying that he act like a unfaitful husband to kate so she would not suffer whe he inevitable die... so crazy mental gymnastic there but a fun read; and one of the many good things about the first season is that we saw the couple actually marryed and dealing with problems after the wedding, but noooooo, why repeat a succesfull trick, we had to make time for simon´s friend new club subplot! and talking about things that go no where
9.- Benedict was the worse this season, im sorry for the Benedic fans in the world, poor rich white man!! he is unsure of his talent!! he get into a fancy school of arts when he sleep with the naked models and drink and party every day but boohooooo his brother pay for his spot! poor rich man :c, aght..... like what kind of art academy is that??? no because a woman in naked it´s mean she´s gonna sleep with the artist??? why is this the dramma that had to have sexines! why not??? i don´t know!! edwina and her non existed scholar??? Eloise and the common boy?? miss feaderington and her new lover?? or what about the main couple of the series!!
10.- Marina was my favorite last season, i´m glad we saw a little bit of her, im happy she had her babyes, they were adorable, i´m glad her husband was a nice person, i hope that when everybody find out about Penelope in a few season she come back and punch her in the face, I HOPE NOTHING BAD HAPPEND TO HER, I MEAN IT WOULD BE A BOMMER IF THEY KILL HER OFF JUST TO PAIR HER HUSBAND WITH A BRIDGERTON GIRL
11.- I like the queen, the tv runner love the queen, the queen love the queen, please stop with the queen, she is good in small dosis.
Overal i like the season, is not as good as the first one but still grate, im probably gonna rewatched like eleven times just to be sure

42 NORTH 71 WEST by @lecrit [ M | AU | 62.1k | complete ]
Alec sometimes wonders why he ever decided to pursue a career in politics. Magnus sometimes questions whether pursuing his dream of becoming an actor was worth it.
Those two facts are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON by @unrestrainedlyexcessive [ E | AU | 21.3k | complete ]
Alec pulls up to the gold intercom positioned at the enormous front gates. Like everything owned by the obscenely wealthy, they’re proportioned for both for giants and giant egos.
He’d hoped this would be easier, less gut-churning work than protecting diplomats and foreign dignitaries, some guilty of truly terrible things, but being a bodyguard for a coddled popstar who can’t even be bothered with basic safety isn’t his idea of a good time.
---
Magnus is a popstar and Alec is his reluctant bodyguard. The bodyguard au in epistolary form. Image-heavy.
HIGHER THAN THE BIG TREES by @carmenlire [ E | AU | 242k | complete ]
Alec loves his job. He’s been touring since he was sixteen. He’s stayed in dozens of countries over the years, learned enough of their languages to get a beer in his hand and a man in his bed. The road is as much his home as the townhouse on the Upper West Side. He’s as comfortable in cheap hotel rooms with scratchy linens and glaring lights as he is in his penthouse that overlooks Central Park with its silk sheets and the constant hum of the city that never sleeps. Alec works hard and that hard work has paid off. He just finished his latest sold-out world tour and by all rights, he should be on top of the world. But the mental pressure of celebrity is getting to Alec and he doesn't trust his footing. He's stuck where most people would kill to be and he just wants to know what his next move should be. Enter Magnus Bane. A history professor at Columbia University, Magnus is content with his friends, his classes, and the occasional warm body in his bed. But he's been feeling stagnant, looking for the next chapter in his life to begin. If only he knew what Alec would bring his way.
THE SECRET OF THE SECRET SANTA by @notcrypticbutcoy [ T | AU | 12.7k | complete ]
As busy doctors with busy schedules, Magnus and Alec have danced around their feelings for each other for years, much to the chagrin of their friends. This Christmas, Simon decides it’s time for an intervention-in the form of a shamelessly rigged secret santa.
Or: In which Simon rigs the secret santa, Magnus and Alec flirt over nerdy doctor things, and are both a little bit oblivious.
RUMOR HAS IT by @lecrit [ M | AU | 12.9k | complete ]
Magnus widens his eyes at him, silently asking him to just give him this one. Alec simply curves one of his stupidly perfect eyebrows in response, a simple gesture that carries the weight of a call for challenge. “Looks like you’re gonna have to postpone your wedding for now,” Maia giggles next to him. Magnus huffs, flexing his jaw. “Oh, it’s on, Lightwood,” he mouths at him.
.
Or the one where Alec and Magnus are both after the same guy, but end up falling for each other instead.

Making a birthday cake for the renowned chef Magnus Bane is a hard enough task – made harder still by the fact his girlfriend doesn’t seem to know Magnus’ likes or dislikes at all. Alec Lightwood, maker of some of the finest cakes in Brooklyn, is up to the challenge, even if he can’t take his eyes off the birthday boy. But as Alec and Magnus grow closer, could it be that the missing ingredient is true love?
LOVE & OTHER DRUGS by @la-muerta [ E | AU | 2k | complete | Semi-Charmed Kind Of Life #1 ]
Rising rockstar Magnus Bane’s life is all about sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll - it's an old cliché, but sometimes the clichés are true. And Alec Lightwood, a bassist from another band, is a drug Magnus can't get enough of - even if he knows that like any drug, he's sinking deeper with every hit he takes, and that this is killing him slowly and painfully.
Because this is just about sex, and Alexander doesn't love him back.
OUR LOVE IS A HARSH CHORD by @la-muerta [ E | AU | 21.9k | complete | Semi-Charmed Kind Of Life #2 ]
Magnus lives in two worlds: one of blinding stage lights and the thunder of the adoring crowd stomping its feet to the rhythm of his music; and one of the darkness offstage, a blur of lonely hotel rooms, one-night stands, drugs, and the sting of whiskey.
Magnus lives in two worlds, both of them stark, bleak, empty - until Alec Lightwood comes along, and everything falls apart.

“We,” Maia asks, brows inching towards her hair line. “Who’s we?”
“My husband and I,” he mutters and he rolls his eyes as it's like a bomb’s been detonated in the middle of the table.
Simon screeches, “What,” and even Jace and Isabelle are looking at him with wide eyes.
“You’re married?”

TRUTH OR DARE? by @atowncalledmalec [ E | AU | 4.5k | complete ]
Two small-town cops, partners, Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane, have somehow pulled desk duty on the graveyard shift. Bored out of their minds and finding a lie detector machine, the chance of winning a $50 bet and being able to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask is too good of an opportunity to pass up. Alec gets a little more than he bargained for though when the machine betrays him at every turn. And so does Magnus.
EVERYTHING I DIDN’T KNOW I WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS by @la-muerta [ T | AU | 4.5k | complete ]
Alec got his Christmas shopping done months ago - but he should have known that Jace would mess it all up for him. Now he's out braving the crowds on Christmas Eve trying to find a toy that's sold out everywhere for his son, and as it turns out, he's not the only desperate single father out there who will stop at nothing to get his hands on that last toy in the shops.

"You never have to prove yourself to me."
Shadowhunters are being murdered and mutilated. The Clave is getting desperate to find the culprit, but Alec has to believe there's another way. He won't let this end his relationship with Magnus - he refuses to accept that, and he'll do whatever he can to protect them.

THE TRUTH UNTOLD by @carmenlire [ not rated | 4.4k | complete ]
Magnus closes his eyes and leans into the feelings that wrap around him. They’re two of the most powerful men in the New York shadow world. It makes his chest ache sometimes, the knowledge that they may never be able to take their relationship public, that he won’t ever be able to kiss Alec on a sunny day in the city, that they can’t hold hands as they walk through Central Park, that whenever they do see each other in public it’s always in an official capacity and they’re relegated to formal greetings while their eyes try to say everything they can’t.
He’d still take this over not having Alec, though. That Magnus knows without a doubt.
ANYTHING YOU SAY by @milominderbindered [ M | AU | 117k | complete ]
Detective Alec Lightwood likes his job. He likes the order of it, likes helping people, likes that he gets to work with Jace and that Izzy is always right downstairs in the morgue too. He's wanted to be a cop ever since he was a kid, just like his parents before him, and now he's living that dream. His life should be perfect.
There's just one problem. Their precinct has just gotten a new forensic expert -- Magnus Bane.
And honestly, he's so cute that Alec's kind of losing his mind.

Alec has made plenty of questionable choices, as Izzy likes to so kindly remind him. Asking Magnus to be his fake boyfriend and then offering to pay him? That is, until Alec started winning.

The bartender considers him for a moment before holding out the hand that was over his just a second before. “I’m Magnus, bartender extraordinaire. While I certainly wouldn’t mind calling you pretty boy for the rest of the evening, I think it only fair that you share your name, too. Don’t you?”
Slowly, Alec reaches out and grasps Magnus’s hand in a poor imitation of a handshake. He meets Magnus’s eyes and knows they both know that this is a mere prelude for what’s to come.
“Alec,” he says slowly and watches as Magnus’s smile deepens.
“Well, Alec, my shift ends in an hour. Wait for me?”

“I want you,” Magnus pressed his lips to Alec’s neck, the sensation of his lips against the deflect rune making Alec shudder again.

“That I was right.” Magnus pulled away from his neck to look down at him and it took a second for what he meant to click with Alec.

ALL NIGHT (OR A HUNDRED YEARS) by @hourglassmermaid [ T | 4.3k | complete ]
“Get your mind out of the gutter, Raphael,” Magnus chastises. “You know I take care of my friends.”
Friends. The word stings more than kuri venom; it lingers far longer than any demon attack ever could. It lingers in Alec’s mind when he’s tossing and turning at night imagining what they could have been if Alec hadn’t been such a coward all those years ago. It lingers in his heart whenever they’re alone, and Alec swears he sees a glimmer of those feelings Magnus must have buried long ago. And it lingers in his soul whenever they work together as allies, as leaders, as partners, because they really are compatible in all the ways that count.
But none of that matters, because they’re just friends.
---
Alec and Magnus are colleagues — maybe even friends. Definitely allies. Alec's content, with his life, his career, and even his (lack of) relationships, but sometimes when Magnus sits beside him, Alec may or may not cease to function. It's okay; he's okay.

“Or not?” Alec tries hastily. He gets paid regardless of what they're talking about. “We can just chat for a while.”
“What’s your name,” the voice says finally.
“Uh, Chad,” Alec says. He was drunk when he picked his name, just as he was drunk when he answered the job wanted ad. He should have picked something sexy like Tristan, but he’s forever Chad now, the douchiest phone sex operator in history. He balances his bowl of macaroni carefully on his stomach and sneaks a quick bite.
“You don’t sound like a Chad,” the voice says doubtfully.
“Why the hell not?” Alec says before he can stop himself, mouth full of pasta.
“--are you eating?”
“No,” Alec lies and swallows.

Christmas is his favorite time of the year but Alec has barely had time to buy presents let alone enjoy the holiday season. His gaze snags on a bakery display as he walks past. The window is dressed with multicolored lights and garland wrapping around the edges. The display case is full and Alec’s mouth waters just at the sight.
Without conscious thought, Alec is reaching for the door to Bane's Bakery, eager to see if the interior is just as whimsical and welcoming as the outside.

‘Supergirl’s’ Andrea Brooks believes Eve Teschmacher could find redemption
Andrea Brooks, portrayer of Eve Teschmacher, spoke with Hypable about her character's journey.
Miss Teschmacher! The words echoed by Cat Grant and Lex Luthor (arguably with more power from the former) have given way to Supergirl‘s most devious character, who fooled them all for years: Ms. Eve Teschmacher.
Supergirl season 4 has been, well, amazing, and has delivered some of the series’ strongest episodes with the introduction of a prime Superman villain and another Kara. The biggest surprise, however, was that Eve Teschmacher, former CatCo and current L Corp assistant, was working with the biggest villain of them all the entire time.
Since her introduction on Supergirl season 2, Eve has been playing everyone in National City, undercover in Kara’s world to undermine her and ensure that Lex Luthor comes out on top.
Eve Teschmacher / Andrea Brooks
After working with Cat, James, and then Lena, Eve has wriggled her way into everyone’s hearts on Supergirl, even making some of them (Lena, particularly) trust her. Eve has been the only one in on Lena’s experiments, so this betrayal affected her the most, from both Eve and her brother.
Reflecting on Eve’s journey and her future
It seems unlikely, at the moment, that Eve could suddenly find redemption and separate herself from Lex when she has no intention of switching sides.
However, Lex’s plan continuously grows more dangerous, and he’s taken advantage of Eve’s feelings and admiration for him countless times. The way Lex speaks to Eve is so demeaning; he thinks of Eve as nothing more than a pawn in his game, a chess piece to move across the board, while Eve gives him all of her energy and her complete devotion.
ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW
After shooting James, sleeping with Kara’s boyfriend (all the way back in season 2), betraying Lena’s trust, how can Eve come back from that? She’s been spying on everyone, with knowledge of everyone’s secrets (even the big Supergirl secret), and reporting back to Lex, who has been manipulating events to work in his favor.
We had the chance to speak with Andrea Brooks, who portrays Eve Teschmacher on The CW’s Supergirl, to discuss Lex’s building plans, Eve’s loyalty to him, what’s next for Eve as Supergirl season 4 winds down, and if she believes redemption is on the table.
Interview with Andrea Brooks
Hypable: Did you always know what the [Supergirl] writers were planning for Eve?
Andrea Brooks: Well, I have always been a fan of the original Superman films. I’m also a fan of Valerie Perrine who played the original Miss Eve Tessmacher. So, I’ve always been hyper aware of who this character is and what she would be capable of.
But this big deception that has been revealed this season was beyond exciting and it wasn’t until the beginning of this past season that I had a meeting with Robert and Jessica and they sat me down and they explained where this character would be going and I was absolutely elated to hear that we were going to go full force into this.
How much fun has it been to play evil?
Oh, so much fun. Being bad is extremely fun. Getting to shoot guns. Getting to have the staff do commentary. It’s an absolute dream. I think everyone should play a villain at some point because it’s just the best.
Everyone says playing the villain is much more fun.
Yes, yes. I’ve played mean characters before. I played one psycho character once a number of years ago on an independent project, but this is the first kind of true villain that I had the chance to play and it’s just so juicy. It’s so fun to sink your teeth into this. It’s the best.
Eve Teschmacher / Andrea Brooks
Do you think there’s any chance at all for Eve to redeem herself in the future?
You know what? I do think that, despite everything, Eve does have a big giant heart. I know that Lex has been kind of pressuring her throughout some of the past episodes to not flinch, to be tough, to be like him. But I think at her core, she is a good person and if you go back to the original 1970’s Superman films, Eve Teschmacher is actually the one who saves Superman from drowning.
So, despite the fact that Superman is the arch nemesis to Lex, she sees someone suffering and she jumps in and saves him. So, she does have a heart underneath it all. You never know.
If there was one character on the show that you think could be the one to snap Eve out of her obsession with Lex, who do you think it would be?
Oh, that’s a good question. I do think that Eve and Lena share a deep understanding for one another and I do think that the betrayal just by the fact it has been so exquisite and so extreme in so many ways, I think that it could be possible for Eve to listen to Lena. So, yeah, I would say there’s a potential there.
Other than obviously being in love with Lex, what do you think is driving Eve in this quest to take down aliens and help Lex?
I think that Eve decided long ago that Lex was a mastermind of a generation and she just doubled down on her, not only love for him but her admiration and her belief that he could do the right thing. So, I think that she’s very much still aligned with him. She’s still loyal to Lex and I think that no matter what he does, even if it’s a little bit extreme, she still sees herself as being on that side.
What has it been like to work with Melissa and see her in character as both Kara and Red Daughter, and then Red Daughter pretending to be Kara?
Oh my goodness. When I read that episode, I remember thinking, “Oh wow. This is a little complicated.” But Melissa is such a gifted actor. Watching her work is always such a joy and boy does she do all of these characters and these versions of these characters in disguise… boy, does she do them justice. Her Russian accent is impeccable. Not only is she a stellar actor, she’s a stellar human being. She’s so kind. She’s so collected. She’s an activist. I could gush about her forever. I just adore her and watching her portray these two characters has just been mesmerizing.
Eve Teschmacher / Andrea Brooks
If you could give Eve one piece of advice, what would it be?
I would say, “Eve, listen to your heart.” I think she’s tangled herself up in this Lex web. I don’t think Lex treats her particularly nicely a lot of the time and I think that Eve needs to look inwards and think about herself. Put herself first. So, I would say, “Listen to your heart.” Like the song.
Can you tease Eve’s role going into these last few episodes?
Well, I’m fortunate enough to be a part of the next three episodes including the finale. What I’m most excited about is the Eve cloning that’s about to take place in [season 4 episode 20] which is titled appropriately Will the Real Miss Teschmacher Please Stand Up? A title that I adore and was so excited to read. As an old school Eminem fan, it’s very appropriately titled and getting to be a part of sequences involving multiple Eve’s was beyond anything I ever could have imagined.
There will be some multiplying happening. There will be some tense moments between Team Science, being of course Lena and Eve. Then there are some feelings to sort out with Lex Luther when he’s back for the finale.
What has been your favorite scene to shoot this season?
Everything with Jon Cryer has been a dream. But, I must say that there’s a big sequence involving all of the Eve clones in this upcoming episode that really blew my mind. I think the writers Katie Rogers, Derek Simon and Natalie Abrams did such a wonderful job with this episode. You’ll know what I mean. The clone sequences this upcoming episode is unlike anything I have ever, ever done. Ever.
If you could play any other Supergirl character, who would you play?
Oh, that is a good question. Oh, maybe… I mean at this point it’s hard to imagine myself playing anyone else apart from Eve, but I did originally actually audition for the role of Maggie. A character that I could not see myself playing. I don’t know, I mean being Supergirl would be a ton of fun, but I also don’t think I’m right. I don’t know, I think I just have to stick with Eve. I bet it’s a very boring answer.
[…] I couldn’t be happier. I adore Eve. I adore this character and it’s been such a wild ride.
Are there any plans for you to return for [Supergirl] season 5?
We’ll have to wait and see.
Thank you Andrea Brooks for taking the time to reflect on Eve Teschmacher and to tease what’s coming as Supergirl season 4 ends (presumably with a bang)!
Hypable.

Stuck Inside Media Diary Week 5
I realized the last movie I saw in theaters was Little Women for the third time. Then that got me thinking about how I ranked my Top whatever movies from last year and inconsequential ranking things is. It was probably the movie that makes me feel the best; it and Knives Out were the two movies I saw the most in a theater last year and they were both the ones that I get excited talking about with people. Good flicks, you should check ‘em out. (I also re-learned recently that Emma Stone was originally supposed to play Meg who was played by Emma Watson. Had this happened, my brain would’ve collapsed due to trying to figure out how to balance crushes on Greta Gerwig, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Laura Dern and Emma Stone all in the same thing).

Deliverance, Boorman 1972
On the one hand there is no real way to prepare you for how awful the assault on Ned Beatty and John Voight scene is as well as having me wonder if this was actually a Vietnam movie masked in something about the destruction of the natural world (maybe it’s both or just one). On the other hand, I thought it’d be funny to compare the characters to this to the characters in American Pie, but there’s no Stiffler or Jim’s Dad in this movie, so it doesn’t completely work.
Mad Men, “Long Weekend”, “Indian Summer”, “Nixon Vs. Kennedy”, “The Wheel” [season 1 finale]
There’s two things I’ll never forget the first time I ran through the first season of Mad Men: 1. Thinking “is Don even good at his job? I don’t think we’ve even seen this guy even really do his job yet, how did he become partner?” and then “The Wheel happens”. 2. I had let one of my favorite History teachers borrow my DVDs (this would happen again in my life when I later lent my English teacher The Wire when I was a senior two years later) and when he finished the first season he and I talked about what dumb-dumb idiots we were because we hadn’t figured out that Peggy was definitely pregnant and were surprised by this revelation, while his girlfriend at the time figured it out instantly.
Parks And Rec, “Greg Pikitis”, “Ron And Tammy”
That these two episodes were on back-to-back was probably the moment in the public consciousness that Parks was the real deal. How could you not; I watch “Greg Pikitis” every Halloween.
The Last Dance, Parts 1 & 2
I can’t remember the last thing I watched in real time on the tv. It’s very possible, though I don’t think so, that The Last Dance might be quarantine great and in real life very, very good. It doesn’t really matter, because this thing is just crazy fun to watch, as a person who was not able to watch Jordan basketball and sometimes thinks that Gen Xers gets way too [whatever that Spongebob meme is where you capitalize every other letter in a sentence] about Michael Jordan. The music cues are God-tier.
Joe Pera Talks With You, “Joe Pera Shows You Iron”, “Joe Pera Takes You To Breakfast”, “Joe Pera Takes You On A Fall Drive”
“Joe Pera Takes You To Breakfast” might be one of the funniest episodes of television I’ve seen in a long time. As someone who takes too much enjoyment in stream of consciousness humor, I might be too in the bag for this show. I certainly don’t know how to sell it to any of you, other than it might be the perfect counterpart to Review. That could just be that Joe Pera looks like an alt-universe Andy Daly or it could be that Forrest MacNeil could’ve, desperately, used a friend like Joe Pera if only just to see how they’d interact with each other.

Under The Silver Lake, Mitchell 2018 [as of now this is available on Prime]
I’m embarrassed that I caved into watching a stoner movie on 4/20, but I’m glad it was this. This weird, gross and beautifully shot weird little movie that really did some good work in reminding me that Andrew Garfield is good. People will argue that this broke his brain, when in reality it was those two embarrassing Spider-Man movies.
Joe Pera Talks With You, “Joe Pera Shows You How To Dance”, “Joe Pera Talks You Back To Sleep”, “Joe Pera Reads You The Church Announcements”
So “Church Announcements” was the first episode of this show that I had ever seen, because I had three different friends recommend it to me because I had posted something about “Baba O’Riley” very off-handedly, not even knowing this episode existed. It’s probably the purest expression of joy and one of the most sincerely happy things I might have ever seen. I love this show so much.

The Birdcage, Nichols 1996 [as of now this is available on Prime]
This is a good reminder that Nathan Lane is insanely talented and easily one of the most undervalued performers alive. I wanted to watch a Gene Hackman movie and this was available and it’s pretty good. Sometimes plays shouldn’t be turned into movies, that’s my take here-what do you want from me.
Better Call Saul, “Something Unforgivable”
Safe to say Saul’s got the belt. I was listening to Greenwald and Ryan the other night and someone had throughout a hypothetical to them that if they could would they want Gilligan and the gang to to remake Breaking Bad now, and have that (essentially) be the spin-off from Saul instead of vice-versa. That then got me thinking about if there’s ever been a property that’s taken place within the same universe that waited almost a season and a half to introduce the character (or thing) that connected the two things? There’s probably some kind of sci-fi or fantasy story that nerds would be eager to inform me of and it’s called 2une or something like that. Cool if so! If not, then no one steal my idea, this could be huge.
Joe Pera Talks With You, “Joe Pera Lights Up The Night with You”, “Joe Pera Talks to You About the Rat Wars of Alberta, Canada (1950–Present Day)”, “Joe Pera Answers Your Questions About Cold Weather” [Season 1 finale]
“Can you believe those jag-offs through a New Year’s Eve party with just one bottle of Disarooney” is something I just say out loud when I’m frustrated now. I stayed up until like 3AM last Tuesday wrapping up the first season.
Wednesday, April 22
The Stranger, Welles 1946 [as of now this is available on Netflix]
First Orson Welles movie. It was fine! I don’t really think it should’ve been an hour-and-a-half long, but I was also surprised that they were already making movies about Nazis escaping to the US in 1946, but I’m definitely not a historian and I’m sure a lot of things would surprise me about 1946. It’s also a public domain movie which is just kinda....weird and would probably piss off Orson Welles or maybe he’d be thrilled.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Hughes 1986 [as of now this is available on Netflix]
Maybe the best use of a Beatles song in a movie that doesn’t star The Beatles? I used to go back and forth on whether or not I like this movie, because so many people do like it and I used to be loathe to conform to non-controversial opinions. But something I think that gets really overlooked is how well this movie is shot-Hughes had a real eye for framing and blocking. Or maybe people talk about this all the time and I just haven’t cared to ever listen or seek it out.
The Plot Against America, “Part 2″
Mad Men, [Season 2 premier] “For Those Who Think Young”, “Flight 1″
I had forgotten how GD disorienting this show can be when it goes out of its way to not tell you how much time has passed between each season (it’s like 15 months this time). That’s all I’ve got now, that and Duck Phillips: welcome back into my life, you sick son of a bitch.
Joe Pera Talks With You, [Season 2 premier] “Joe Pera Talks With You About Beans”, “Joe Pera Takes You On A Hike”
Thursday, April 23
Harold And Maude, Ashby 1971 [as of now this is available on Prime]
Another entry in the “I didn’t realize how many movies try to be this one” book. Really funny, and so shockingly dark, I can’t imagine how much people hated this when it first came out and how hard of a sell it would be to try and talk someone into seeing it. Probably what I liked most about it was how earned the sense of finding joy in life is in this movie, considering how cynical it is in depicting the fetishization guys tend to do with the notion of suicide. It’s quirky without being twee (if you want that, I guess go to Rushmore, a movie I adore, but definitely borrows heavily from this, something Anderson wouldn’t ever deny).
Mad Men, “The Benefactor”, “Three Sundays”
Harry Crane’s campaign to be the least liked person in Mad Men, you could argue, starts more-so here than it did in the finale of S1 when he cheats on his wife.
The Plot Against America, “Part 3″
I don’t think anything, Television-wise, has benefited less from the pandemic than TPAA. Of course it would happen to a David Simon show and maybe it’s a good thing, considering how the number of bad takes would greatly outweigh the number of good takes that would come about if there was some more attention on it.
Joe Pera Talks With You, “Joe Pera Waits With You”, “Joe Pera Guides You Through The Dark”
I can’t remember the last time I laughed as hard as I did when they started demonstrating the different hair styles you can get when getting your hair cut. These episodes have somehow gotten goofier than the first season and it’s, uh, really good.
Friday, April 24
Parks And Recreation, “The Camel”
Top Chef, Season 17 episode 6
Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Lights Out”
Dan Goor & Luke Del Tredici is to Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Michael Schur & Aisha Muharrar was to Parks And Recreation.
The Beastie Boys Story, Jonze 2020 [available on AppleTV+]
As with any kind of retrospective, there’s a fair amount of yadda-yadda-ing and maybe not everything totally works with this live-documentary, but it’s so deeply Beastie Boys that I can’t help but just be so grateful that it exists. While it’s like a vaudeville symposium it is absolutely doubles as a love letter to a departed friend and immense talent. The worst thing that could happen is that it’ll just make you want to re-listen to the gods.
Mad Men, “The New Girl”, “Maidenform”
I just can’t believe that Chauncey exits the series the same episode that he enters. This was and still remains the turning point of Duck Phillips: terrible human (and kind of when he turns a little cartoonish).
Saturday, April 25
Parks And Recreation, “Hunting Trip”
Mad Men, “The Gold Violin”, “A Night To Remember”, “Six Month Leave”, “The Inheritance”, “The Jet Set”
Quite a run of episodes here for ole Mad Men here. Always love when they remind us that everyone really underestimates Ken Cosgrove (even himself). And as I was watching “Six Month Leave” it kind of hit me that this is an outlier episode of Mad Men. It’s so much of a whole that I find it hard to put one episode above another, but if I needed just an episode of Mad Men to watch at random like a year or so from now, this is one that would really stick out to me. A great farewell to a great Murray brother.
Bad Education, Finley 2019 [available on HBO Now/Go]
It sucks that HBO makes more bad movies than it does good, but when they’re good, man they’re really good. It hits some HBO movie bingo squares which are kind of eye-rolley to me, but all-in-all, this is a really outstanding little movie. It feels weird that it’s taken this long for Ray Romano to start carving out a character actor niche for himself, but I’m just happy we’re finally here! I saw someone compare it to or with Wolf Of Wall Street and as someone not from Long Island I feel confident in saying that they’re a helluva Long Island scum-bag (repetitive?) double feature.
The Plot Against America, “Part 4″
Was really hoping this was going to be the thing that made people remember that Winona is incredible and not Stranger Things, but that’d require like a dozen monkey’s paw wishes that I just don’t have. (What a world it’d be if The Plot Against America adaptation somehow eclipsed Stranger Things in terms of cultural significance) However badly I wanted that though, this has really been Zoe Kazan’s show-a quieter role than Anthony Boyle (who I am also just floored by) but more effective in how much internal processing she’s doing with this character.
Joe Pera Talks With You, “Joe Pera Takes You To The Grocery Store”, “Joe Pera Goes To Dave Wojcek’s Bachelor Party With You”
