What You Need To Know About Mahindra's Compact SUV
Why The Mahindra XUV300 Is The SUV You've Been Waiting For
In SA collisions are almost a norm - drivers change lanes and only then indicate, while others fail to keep to a safe following distance, so one’s driving expertise is a secondary factor on South African roads.
To be safe, you need to be in a car that has passed the crash safety test with flying colours. So, when I got a confirmation that I will be putting the Mahindra XUV300, W8, petrol variation to the test, I quickly googled the car, and the first thing that stood out for me was this: its safety credentials remain unmatched in its class.
It is needless to say that nobody leaves their homes with the hope that they will get into a car accident. But getting to your destination without a scratch on the car or losing your cool with fellow motorists is an underplayed win.
Parting ways with just over R300,000 for my protection in a car is not too bad at all. This Mahindra was tested by the Global New Car Assessment Programme for both India and Africa, the XUV300 set a new benchmark for crash safety in its class in Africa, and it boasts a score of 16.42 out of 17 for adult protection, giving it five out of five stars.
And if you drive with your little one sitting comfortably at the back, the car received four out of five stars for child safety.
I am generally not a fan of compact SUVs. They tend to straddle the line of giving you little of everything, and not entirely anything at the same time. That is my general view on compact SUVs, irrespective of the brand. Most of them don’t have enough boot space, and they give you just enough legroom, but you wish the people in the backseat would have enough legroom too.
But South Africans love compact SUVs, and they continue to buy them. That market is one of the toughest and most saturated. The Mahindra XUV300 competes in a rapidly growing segment with rivals such as the Hyundai Venue, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Mazda CX30, Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Chery Tiggo Pro 4, Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger, Haval H1, to name just a few.
With the XUV300, I thought the interior could have had a more luxurious finish to it, and less of the plastic feel. But the feature of an updated nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system makes you smile again. The new system is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it easy to just plug and play.
With fuel prices always going up and down, the XUV300’s fuel capacity is also equal to most hatchbacks, taking in 42 litres. I consistently got a consumption of 6.4l /100km, but this could be due to the traffic between Sandton and Centurion in the morning and afternoon.
I still don’t understand why this car has a six-gear transmission; the five gears are enough. But it’s a head-turner. When I shared a few pictures of the car on my WhatsApp status, friends and family couldn’t outright guess the brand of the car. They named the competitor brands and were surprised by the beautiful design by Mahindra.
The Mahindra XUV300 is a car that is reliable and has a beautifully distinguishable design. And you are guaranteed the highest level of safety, should the undesirable happen, especially if you are going to be on the road daily.

All Details About the 2020 Hyundai i20 Sound System
The Hyundai i20 for sale was the brand's next big launch in the South African market, after the Kona and the Venue. The company has confirmed that the launch timeline for the updated hatchback is on track.
According to reports from Financial Express, the 2020 i20 features a premium sound system.
The eight-speaker setup includes Super65 units that will be installed on the front doors of the updated hatchback for an enhanced audio experience. Similar audio hardware was seen fitted to luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi adding to the premium factor.
The premium sound system could very well be a best-in-class feature along with some of the others that are featured on the i20. It comes with two 10.25-inch displays for the instrument cluster, and the touch-screen infotainment system, respectively.
The touch-screen infotainment system supports Android Auto, Apple Carplay and the brand's latest iteration of Bluelink connected technology. The updated software provides a host of additional features to the driver with a new layout and colour scheme on the screen.
The recently launched Verna facelift and the new-gen Creta features 45 and 50 ‘connected' commands, respectively. In comparison, the Hyundai Venue and the Elantra will feature only 33 and 34 commands, respectively. The i20 gets the same connected car features as the Venue.
Some of the other interior features on the new-gen hatchback include dual-zone climate control with rear air-con vents, ambient lighting, electric sunroof, a flat-bottom steering wheel with mounted controls, cruise control, multiple airbags, ABS with EBD and more.
This i20 is its third iteration and features a host of design changes to the exteriors of the hatchback. This includes an all-new front facia with cascading grille and restyled headlamps which are much sleeker as compared to the older ones.
At the rear, the new split-tail lamps are connected by a light bar running across the length of the boot lid. It also comes equipped with a newly designed dual-tone alloy wheel that gives the hatchback an aggressive look.
By now you should be able to find a used Hyundai i20 for sale on Group 1 Hyundai’s website and score a 2020 i20 at a very sexy price...

Hyundai Alcazar prices announced
And here they are! The Hyundai Alcazar's introductory starting price is Rs 16.30 lakh for the petrol version, and Rs 16.53 lakh for the diesel version. Here's a look at the detailed variant-wise prices.
12:14 (IST)
Hyundai Alcazar engine and gearbox options
While the Alcazar borrows its 1.5-litre diesel engine from the Creta as is, the three-row SUV ditches the Creta’s petrol options for a larger, 2.0-litre petrol.
12:10 (IST)
Hyundai Alcazar interior
While the design and layout of the Hyundai Alcazar's dashboard is quite similar to that of the Creta, it has a cognac brown-and-black colour scheme, and also gets more features.
12:06 (IST)
Alcazar to strengthen Hyundai's grip on SUV segment
Tarun Garg, Director - Sales and Marketing at Hyundai India, says the company accounted for 26 percent of all SUVs sold in India, with a majority of those being the Hyundai Creta and Hyundai Venue. The Alcazar - deriving its name from Spanish palaces and castles - is aimed to consolidate Hyundai's hold over the SUV segment in the country.
12:02 (IST)
Hyundai Alcazar launch begins
SS Kim, MD and CEO of Hyundai India, begins the Alcazar launch by mentioning the company has completed 25 years in the country, and is launching its first all-new product in 2021 with the Alcazar.
11:59 (IST)
Hyundai Alcazar features: A quick look
Check out some of the features the Hyundai Alcazar gets, including first-in-segment goodies such as an air purifier, a Bose sound system, a 10.25-inch all-digital instruments display and a blind spot monitor. Also note the 2,760 mm wheelbase, which is a full 150 mm longer than that of the Creta.
11:50 (IST)
Watch the Hyundai Alcazar launch LIVE
You can follow the live stream of the Hyundai Alcazar's launch right here.
11:43 (IST)
Third row the ace up Alcazar's sleeve
The main calling card of the Hyundai Alcazar, of course, is its third row of seats. The Creta is a strict five-seater, but the Alcazar will be available in six- and seven-seat forms, with the former packing captain chairs for second-row passengers.
11:29 (IST)
A Creta XL with a different name
If you think the Hyundai Alcazar looks familiar, that's for a reason. The Alcazar is based on the second-gen Hyundai Creta, and is essentially a lengthened version of the popular midsize SUV that accomodates a third row of seats.
10:58 (IST)
It's time for the Hyundai Alcazar's launch
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Tech2's LIVE coverage from the launch of the eagerly-awaited Hyundai Alcazar SUV. We'll bring you updates straight from the launch event, so sit back and get ready to welcome the newest three-row SUV on the block.
It’s happening, folks – the three-row Hyundai Alcazar SUV is being launched today! Unveiled earlier this year, the Alcazar was originally set to be introduced in April, but the launch was pushed back because of the second COVID-19 wave that gripped the country. The Alcazar will be available in six- and seven-seat variants, with a total of three main trim levels to choose from – Prestige, Platinum and Signature. Manual and automatic transmission options will be offered with all trims, but seven-seat layouts will only be available with the Prestige and Platinum trims; the top-spec Signature variant can only be had a six-seater.
The Hyundai Alcazar is based on the second-generation Hyundai Creta, but while it borrows its 1.5-litre diesel engine as is, the three-row SUV ditches the Creta’s petrol options for a larger, 2.0-litre petrol. The Hyundai Alcazar petrol’s ARAI-certified fuel economy figure is 14.5 kpl for the manual gearbox version, and a marginally lower 14.2 kpl for the automatic gearbox version. The Hyundai Alcazar diesel’s ARAI-certified fuel economy figure is 20.4 kpl for the manual version and 18.1 kpl for the automatic gearbox version. Do remember that the Hyundai Alcazar diesel is significantly less powerful than its rivals – its 1.5-litre diesel only puts out 115 hp and 250 Nm of torque, while the XUV500’s 2.2-litre unit makes 155 hp and 360 Nm, and the Safari and Hector’s 2.0-litre, Fiat-sourced diesel engines produce an identical 170 hp and 350 Nm.
Expect Hyundai Alcazar prices to be at a premium of nearly Rs 1 lakh over the equivalent Creta variant.

2020 Hyundai Venue: Our Favourite Model
The 2020 Hyundai Venue is the cheapest crossover on the market.
This littlest Hyundai crossover is available in three trim levels: Motion, Fluid and Glide.
The Motion model is best for buyers on a budget, but the Glide might be the best value.
Fun fact: The V in Hyundai Venue stands for value. Okay, not really. But it's plausible because the Korean automaker's newest and littlest crossover became the most affordable of its kind when pricing was released late last year. With a sticker price that starts at R271,500, the 2020 Venue costs less than all other subcompact crossover SUVs. It also has an array of desirable standard and optional features that make it even more attractive compared with pricier alternatives such as the Ford EcoSport and the Mazda CX-3 that cost several thousand dollars more.
The Venue is front-wheel drive only. That means it's more comparable with the Nissan Kicks and Kia Soul, which both also start under R300,000 and don't offer all-wheel drive.
Model We'd Choose
Glide
The 2020 Venue is available in three distinct trim levels: Motion, Fluid and Glide. We'd choose the top Glide trim. We know it may seem contradictory that we just spent that last couple paragraphs bragging about the Venue being the cheapest crossover on the market and then bypassed it for the most expensive model. But, please, hear us out.
The base Motion is a great option for buyers who want a small and stylish SUV on a budget. It shares the same 121-hp 1.6-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that powers every model, and it comes with a six-speed manual transmission. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is optional on the base Venue and standard on the other two.
The only problem is that the Motion lacks some of the fancier features that are only available on the Fluid and the Glide. The Fluid also has better standard equipment than the Motion model. But to get the best options on the Fluid, Hyundai requires buyers to purchase both available packages, which cost approximately R42,000 combined. That action makes the fully-loaded Fluid R1500 more expensive than the top-of-the-line Glide model. Say what?
Standout Standard Features
White roof with matching exterior accents
Leatherette upholstery with heated front seats
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
Other than a handful of accessories, the Glide model doesn't have any options or packages. Instead, it comes standard with all the best content, such as an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, 17-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, and keyless entry with push-button start. It also gets style points for having the coolest-sounding trim name. While its exclusive white-painted roof means it doesn't come with a sunroof—only the Fluid model has that option—the unique aesthetic helps the Glide stand out. It's also the only version with leatherette upholstery and denim-blue exterior paint colour. With a total price of R340,000, our fully loaded 2020 Venue has all the cool tech and creature comforts that shoppers want.

275 BHP Hyundai Kona N Global Debut Later This Year
Hyundai Kona N will likely use the same 2.0-litre turbo engine from i30 N and Veloster N to develop 271 bhp and it could be mated to an eight-speed DCT
Hyundai’s N performance brand has gained good attention among global customers and thus naturally the company is looking at expanding its reach to other models. In recent years, Hyundai has certainly expanded its SUV portfolio with vehicles such as Kona, Venue and Palisade, and all of them are performing well in sales pertaining to the needs of the modern day customers.
Earlier this year, the Hyundai Kona N was spotted testing heavily disguised and several reports indicate that it will use the same mechanicals as the i30 N and Veloster N. If it turns out to be the case, the Hyundai Kona N will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In the performance-spec i30 N and Veloster N, the powertrain is good enough to develop a maximum power output of 275 bhp.
Spied during cold weather testing as well as doing hot laps at Nurburgring, the Hyundai Kona N is reported by The Korean Car Blog to be the first N badged model to have an all-wheel-drive system. The aforementioned engine will be connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sending power to all the four wheels.
In the lower variants, it could use a six-speed manual transmission. As for the exterior, the Hyundai Kona N will have several design updates to differentiate itself from the regular model. Judging by the spy shots and speculations, the performance-based Kona will have colour-coordinated elements in the lower section amidst a slew of subtle revisions.
It must be noted that the SUV will be shod on 19-inch N-branded wheels with sporty red brake calipers while the front grille, bumper and skid plates will see changes. At the rear, there is a pair of new exhaust outlets as well. Additionally, the interior will likely get contrast seat stitching and other notable styling enhancements.
Moreover, it could get aluminium pedals and sports seats. Hyundai engineers will fine tune the suspension bits and decrease the ride height for committed handling characteristics. The production of the Hyundai Kona N may begin this July before making global debut a few months later.

Introduction
It has been one of the most awaited launches and finally we have driven it. We are talking about the MG Hector and a lot has been said and written so let us now talk how it is to drive and what is it like in the real world. The Hector has been reworked extensively in India to suit Indian terrain and MG have worked and completely changed this SUV. The Hector is a big 5-seater SUV to rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass plus of course the Tata Harrier. However it also aims to take a large slice of the Hyundai Creta pie. So can it? Read on.
Looks
The Hector is big. It is bigger than rivals and looks like it with huge presence. With the Hector being 4,655mm in length, 1,835mm in width and 1,760mm in height, it easily beats others for presence. There is also a lot of chrome and other popular SUV design details that we love. Like the Harrier the LED running lights (plus dynamic turn indicators) are linked to the huge grille while the actual headlights are below.
There is more chrome and skid plates are there too. The 17 inch alloys do look too small for the huge body. The side is more estate like and shows the length while it has a floating roof like design too. Meanwhile the rear has LED tail-lamps which makes the SUV look wide. Build quality on the outside is good and the paint finish on the colours are very good also.
Also check: MG Hector Colors
Interiors
Step inside and the interior is simpler than the very aggressive exterior. There is also an all black cabin but due to the sheer size, it does not feel cramped here. There is a massive touchscreen at the centre and very few actual buttons while the steering is a sporty three spoke one with buttons neatly placed.
Storage is decent while the actual storage places in the middle are a bit small but the door pockets/glovebox is quite big. Quality is a mixed bag though as the plastics feel a bit hard and especially for the price or the premium positioning. There is leather and contrast stitching though.
A big USP is the space inside. It is huge and while it is a 5-seater, the seats are big. The rear seat has a flat floor and three is easy with very good shoulder/head/legroom. The seats are comfortable too and the boot is quite big also.
Features
The features list is more like a Rs 40 lakh SUV than a 20 lakh one. It has the basics like cruise control, steering controls, touchscreen, rear camera and sensors, rear ac vents etc However it gets interesting when it also has dual powered front seats (6 way driver and 4 way passenger), a huge panoramic sunroof, powered tail-gate, front parking sesnors, electronic parking brake, 360 degree camera, 8 speaker audio system, 8 colour Ambient lighting, heated ORVMs , TPMS etc. In terms of safety there are 6 airbags, ESP, TCS and Hill-Hold Control, all round disc brakes.
Then there is the huge 10.4 inch touchscreen. It is in HD and you can play videos. It is the biggest touchscreen and comes in portrait mode. The graphics, design and icons plus the functionality is very good.
It also has the ‘iSmart’ connectivity tech feature. Like the Hyundai Venue it has an embedded sim and has internet which is Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6)-ready for 5G. Thus via different apps and software you can access a huge amount of features from TomTom real time nav plus more preloaded software from Microsoft, Adobe, SAP, Cisco, Gaana etc.
Plus it will also get over the air updates just like a smartphone. Plus there is the remote function which via your smartphone app you can control functions like turning on/off/turning on the ac, opening sunroof etc. Plus you can geofence, get real time updates, and many other features. There are safety emergency services too. Plus MG says your data would be secure.
That is not all though as its voice command works very well with Indian accents too. It understands 100 commands and just say ‘Hello MG’ and the voice command will let you do a whole host of functions.
Engine and performance
The Hector gets a 1.5l turbo petrol with 141 bhp and 250Nm. Gearbox options include a 6-speed manual as standard while it also get a DCT automatic. There is also a mild hybrid option with the petrol which gets a 48v system. You get regenerative breaking, start/stop system and e-boost which provides additional torque.
There is only a 6-speed manual with this mild hybrid option. To drive this being a massive SUV, the performance is decent. However in inclines or putting your foot down, the Hector petrol hybrid feels touch slow and takes its time. The main reason is weight and lack of torque for a petrol. However as a mainly city drive the Hector mild hybrid is pretty good enough but diesel is the one to buy.
The Hector is a big SUV and needs the torque of the diesel which the 2.0l engine gives. It is the same unit as the one found on the Jeep Compass and Tata Harrier. It makes 170 bhp and 350Nm. It is a pretty silent for a diesel with only a minimal amount of noise and vibrations are controlled. It also cruises well and has been tuned well with lag less than seen in the Compass or the Harrier which have the same engine. Performance is good and it does well on the highway. Due to its weight and size, the Hector is not very fast but it’s not slow also.
In ride and handling, the big Hector rides well and feels like a big SUV. The suspension soaks up bad roads well. However it feels big around corners and rolls- it is not a fun car to drive like the Compass or as nimble as the Creta. In efficiency terms expect 10 kmpl for the petrol and 15 for the diesel.
Trims
There are four variants namely Style, Super, Smart and Sharp. However the base is not very well equipped so get the top-end as that has the big features, which is the main USP of the Hector.
Vs rivals
The Hector is the biggest and scores on space. It also has features no one can match. The Harrier might arguably look better from all angles but the Hector looks more imposing from the front. The Compass is much better to drive and much smaller. Same for the Creta.
Verdict
The Hector is a superb effort from MG. They have put in everything and made sure not to leave anything. It plays the value card and does exactly what every SUV buyer in India wants. It is big on size, features and presence plus the huge touchscreen space are further talking points. Yes the interiors are not the best quality and it is not as good to drive or as efficient as rivals but if priced well the Hector will be a popular SUV.

Hyundai promises 2020 Venue will be its smallest, most stylish CUV yet 2020 Hyundai VenueJonathan Yarkony / Driving What is it? Yet another cute little crossover from South Korea, this one they claim will be the smallest and most affordable in its now seven-strong SUV lineup. Why does it matter? Well, putting smallest and most affordable in the same sentence as SUV is always attention-grabbing. Power comes from Hyundai's tried and tested 1.6L inline-four with dual-port fuel injection. Mated to Hyundai’s IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission), which marries CVT efficiency with artificial “gear shifts” so it feels like a traditional automatic. Overall, the combination is good for 7.1 L/100 km fuel consumption. Stylistically, the Venue looks like a Kona that was mated to a Mini, cute to some, a little too boxy for others. Inside, the “highly function and expressive” interior, like the Venue’s price tag, is meant to attract all those budget-conscious Millennials that have been forced to shop the used car market for the trendy sport-ute they all covet. Hence, what Hyundai Canada calls its “youthful, fun” colour palette. Shorter overall than Kona by 130 millimetres, the Venue’s wheelbase is only 81-millimetres, so the Venue is surprisingly roomy inside. In fact, passenger volume is only down a paltry 62 litres (just two cubic-feet). Even the cargo capacity is down by just 14 litres, barely enough to fit a purse or laptop. The Venue’s infotainment system features an eight-inch Display Audio touchscreen and rear-view monitor

NEXT-GENERATION 2020 HYUNDAI I20
It is quite clear that the new Hyundai i20 follows Hyundai's Sensuous Sportiness design theme showcased by the Le Fil Rouge concept last year. So you have the more sculpted body panels, the clearer lines and the cascading grille design as on the Venue. Some of the swoopiness of the earlier i20 seems to have given way to clearer elements like the flatter roof, raked bonnet and simpler lighting elements, all traits that we've seen on the Venue as well. A clear indication of this is the design of the rear-view mirrors. Overall, the hatchback seems to have grown larger too.
The interiors are expected to improve material quality and come with soft-touch material and a darker colour scheme. Also expected is the new touchscreen interface from the Venue with the Blue Link connected car tech. A look at the steering wheel and instrument cluster from the Venue should give us a good idea of what to expect from the new i20.
As far as engine options are concerned, we think the 1.0-litre T-GDi turbo-petrol and the BSVI-compliant version of the 1,4-diesel engine to make its way here. The seven-speed DCT can also be reasonably expected. Be the first to test drive the new i20 once it is released to experience this upgrade first hand.
The current Hyundai i20 continues to be a good seller, given the new entrants. The new i20 will be expected to carry forward that trend at Group 1 Hyundai, so expect only a slight premium over the current car.
