To continue my rant from my last post a bit, I should also probably discuss what makes visuals different from focus objects, and the answer is actually pretty simple.

They’re not really different, more of two sides of the same coin.

Both visuals and focus objects are, well, tools to focus on for trance.

Though with visuals, they’re more prevalent in hypnosis simply because you can just slap one on nearly any induction and boom, you’ve got an object to focus on.

Though I think visuals are misused quite a bit, if you don’t mind letting me explain.

Visuals like spirals and optical illusions are great tools, just like focus objects, but they’re not the basis of trance, you know?

You can’t just shove spirals in people’s faces and expect them to go deep.

It’s all about the language accompanying that spiral that really creates a good experience.

Now there’s nothing wrong with spirals of course! They’re great in their own ways.

However, I see them used less as objects of focus and more as just trances in their own right.

And I know there’s tons of people who just fall for spirals, and that’s totally cool!

All I say is simply that spirals aren’t quite the same as a full trance experience.

They’re great of course for initiating that experience and helping to deepen it.

But, don’t expect them to carry you all the way through a session.

Though I should also probably explain why visuals are great in their own right.

Just like the phenomenon of optical illusions, hypnotic visuals are created to blur the mind’s focus and use our vision against us to create that illusion and thus, trance.

Now spirals are the go-to and most famous, and there’s tons of reasons for that!

Not only are spirals distracting and pretty in their own ways, but on top of that the illusions they provide are the perfect partner to trance.

The infinite depths of a spiral create this freedom that most visuals don’t really have, enabling the mind to go as deep as it wants.

I feel like most of us have stared at a spiral for a little too long, and that’s the point!

They’re great for losing track of time and creating something so mesmerizing, that the subject is drawn into it for a long period of time.

It’s pretty similar to that feeling of not wanting to get out of bed in the morning, that initial drowsiness and relaxation slumbering your brain all over.

It’s like that, but in a visual form!

If I’m not mistaken either (and someone please correct me if I’m wrong on this, I haven’t found many good sources on it) the part of the mind that loses itself into spirals is also the part that’s responsible for our sleep patterns!

Plus, spirals are just great ways of slipping programming in when you want to.

The distraction created by that dizzy dreamlike cadence of one gives a hypnotist the perfect opportunity to slip programming in.

It’s why you see so many spirals that intensely flash words on a screen to subtly program the viewer, though it’s not guaranteed to actually work.

Different people fall for different spirals, and some don’t really fall at all!

That’s what I think is so fascinating about the visual medium, is that even throughout the tons of options you have, there’s always some that just simply won’t work for someone.

It’s why it’s important for everyone to discuss what they like before expecting to fall into trance, that discovery of what clicks with your brain and what doesn’t can be one that really opens up the doors for even deeper trance for all!

I didn’t even really get into the other visuals/optical illusions here, but I can totally discuss those soon!
