Because the previewed cards themselves do not explain what it does (unsurprisingly, it's a sneak peek!), so at this point it's a very nebulous thing. Comparing to descending which was like three similar mechanics denoted by one word, commiting a crime could mean anything from stealing a booster box to asking your mom if you could draft one more time before going to bed. People may well be right in disparaging of the mechanic, but either way they're too quick to do it. So all's normal in Magic hypeworld.

I'm not sure why "commit a crime" has crossed a line for some people. To me it seems flavorful and simple, and plus it incentivizes interacting with your opponent. For me I can't wait to get a chance to play with it, and I can't wait to see what the other cards in the set are like!

I do think "commit a crime" is currently being grouped, on this blog, with mechanics that are very different than it. I feel people need to play with it.
