I know you said that you aren't the pinnacle of military knowledge that people think you are but know a damsite more than I do about the US military than I do, so I have a question. Do you have any idea how long the Darkstar project would've been going on for in canon? It can't have been a few months but I also don't know if it would be years and years? I know Mav has an award for being a test pilot that I think is dated 2007 (I may have imagined that) but that doesn't mean the Darkstar project was going on for over ten years? I think the F-18A took 8 years from testing to being approved, so it can't be far off. Just wanted your opinion. Thanks :-)
awright here’s my opinion (not an expert)
the darkstar is canonically a Lockheed Martin “skunk works” (super duper secret) surveillance and reconnaissance (SR) spyplane, as evidenced by the skunk works logo on the vertical stabilizer (left is darkstar, right is me with the SW logo on the SR-71 blackbird at the udvar-hazy museum this summer).
we can look to see how long other SW projects have taken to develop in the past. the SR-71, for instance, was first suggested as an “undetectable spyplane” idea in 1957. the lockheed A-12 oxcart, which would provide the framework for the SR-71, had its first flight in 1962, five years later. the finished SR-71 was introduced into USAF and CIA service in 1966. so a 9-year development for the fastest-ever air-breathing jet, with 4-ish of those years being flight testing (ish because the A-12 had to be heavily adapted into the SR-71 which had its first flight in 1964).
Lockheed’s been teasing its blackbird successor, the unmanned aerial vehicle the SR-72 “son of blackbird,” on its socials recently. i saw someone say: “soft-launching its new death machine like an instagram influencer with a new boyfriend”
leading many to believe this is what happened
note however that the SR-72 son of blackbird is an UNMANNED aerial vehicle (UAV) which is why in my fic I specifically said this
note also that most of aircraft development is just that—development. Flight testing (i.e. where mav would get hands-on involved) doesn’t come until very very late in the development process. For the plot of my fic’s sake I had mav go out to NAWS china lake in 2003, but in TGM during the Hard Deck scene Penny says something to the effect of “you got sent out to the desert three years ago for pissing off that other admiral” and mav goes “that was three years ago? 😀” (cute!) so that’s the longest mav could’ve canonically been involved with the darkstar project. (For my own purposes i made it like a year, for those two sections of the story to neatly flow into each other—from 2015ish to 2016. I know TGM takes place in 2020 [i know but idfc] Maybe LockMart has had this tech [probably not high hypersonic like in the movie] for that long anyway and it’s just been so heavily classified that we didn’t know about it till very recently. Definitely possible.)
#i took a picture of the A-12 oxcart at the intrepid museum in NYC but it’s not a selfie so not posting it#i saw it and i was like ‘uh you’re not supposed to just be able to see these’#they have the enterprise space shuttle too it was just fucking insane#military aviation#sr-72#pete maverick mitchell#top gun maverick#edts notes#thank you for the ask! really not an expert but talking about planes is fun for me#the hypersonic race is very interesting… Russia famously has its hypersonic kinzhal missiles and i think CN has them too#but the U.S. has never openly done hypersonics which is why IMO it would be crazy to start off with a manned jet like in TGM#and it’s not clear how useful or effective hypersonic missiles actually are in warfare#* i think I mean specifically air breathing jet hypersonics#obviously icbms and rockets (which fly at hypersonic speeds) are different

65 Years Ago: First Powered Flight of the X-15 Hypersonic Rocket Plane
The X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft, built by North American Aviation (NAA), greatly expanded our knowledge of flight at speeds exceeding Mach 6 and altitudes above 250,000 feet. A joint project among NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and the U.S. Navy, the X-15’s first powered flight took place on Sept. 17, 1959, at the Flight Research […] from NASA https://ift.tt/flO175x

Promise me I’m as safe as houses
Three times Pete gave Ethan a heart attack
Notes: the Mitchell twins are such accident magnets it’s crazy and they worry about each other.
Warnings: automotive accident, mention of death and injury
Song: never let me down again - Depeche Mode
1.
It had been far too long since Ethan last heard from Pete. Getting a phone on the field was nearly impossible, and the silence from his twin was gnawing at him.
Everything felt wrong. The mission had to be a setup; his team was dead, and their gruesome deaths haunted him—Jack’s scream, the fire engulfing the car, the sickening squelch. Ethan had always struggled with the loss of his comrades; in the military, they called him "the heart" for the way he looked after everyone.
Now, his heart raced violently in his chest, shadows closing in around him like coyotes stalking prey. Why was he the only survivor? What had gone wrong? Were they eliminating everyone he cared about?
His mind raced to Pete. What if his brother had been dragged into this? The IMF had gone to great lengths to sever their familial ties, erasing any trace of their twinship on paper. Ethan had been given a new identity, new parents—everything was designed to keep them apart. But what if whoever's targeting him had discovered their connection? He couldn’t risk calling Pete now; it could put them both in danger.
Ethan swallowed hard, forcing those thoughts aside. He had a meeting with Kittrich and couldn’t afford distractions.
2.
He was furious with Pete for his reckless love of speed—motorcycles, planes, anything that moved fast. One day, it would get him killed.
Ethan almost shamelessly begged the IMF to let him leave when he received a call from Ice from his brother’s phone.
“Pete was hit by a pickup,” Ice had said and that alone made Ethan’s heart stop. When they authorized a plane hop over, He was rushing across the airbase.
“Whoa! Whoa! Short stack number two!” Ethan was abruptly halted by Ron Slider Kerner, Pete’s towering friend, who physically pulled him back from rushing ahead.
“Where’s Pete? I need to see him!” Ethan choked out, trying to peer around Slider, his eyes wild with worry.
“Deep breath, Ethan. He’s okay—mostly. They just finished examining him, and you can see him soon,” Slider said, his voice calm, which momentarily confused Ethan. He was used to Pete complaining about Slider’s antics.
“Mav’s got a few broken ribs and a punctured lung, plus some nasty road rash, but he’s still kicking. His bike’s a wreck, though,” Slider continued.
Ethan felt a wave of relief wash over him. “What happened?”
“A truck blew a stop sign right in front of the base. I saw it happen. Mav got thrown about twenty feet; lucky the bushes broke his fall. The ground crew is going to be furious about the hole in their shrubs,” Slider explained, arms crossed. “Idiot tried to walk it off too, got up, took two steps and collapsed.”
Ethan sighed, recognizing the stubbornness in his brother. “That sounds like a Mitchell—always trying to push through.”
“Yeah, I had Tommy call you since I had to haul your brother into medical,” Slider said.
Ethan shook his head, imagining the scene.
3.
“Thomas, what exactly happened?” he nearly snapped into the phone, having discreetly placed a bug in the navy’s communication system to keep tabs on Pete.
“Ethan, I’m choosing to overlook how you found out so quickly, but as the commander of the Pacific Fleet, I have my suspicions,” Ice replied, his tone exasperated yet understanding. “Maverick is fine for now. Last I heard, he was unharmed.”
Ethan’s grip tightened on the phone, sensing Ice was withholding details. “You’re avoiding my question, Tom.”
“He pushed the Dark Star to Mach 10.4,” Ice conceded with a sigh, as if it were just another day at the office.
Ethan stepped away from the railing, pacing as frustration surged through him. The thought of Pete ejecting at hypersonic speed made his stomach churn.
“Thanks, Ice. Just let me know when he’s back on base and cleared,” Ethan said, his voice steadier now.
“I’m sure you’ll hear about it before I do. If you get a hold of him, tell him I have some choice words for him,” Ice chuckled, the humor lightening the gravity of the moment.
Ethan nodded, feeling a mix of relief and impending confrontation.

Accidental Stimulation (Vash the Stampede)
TAGS: Vash/F!reader, pet names, dirty thoughts, drabble Ao3 ver. | Ko-fi | Commissions (OPEN)
“Mmmm......sho...wam…”
“ Stay strong, old boy. Don’t let her irresistible charms make you do something you’ll regret! ”
Sometimes Vash can still barely believe that he’d managed to snag himself such an adorable girl like you for himself. Despite all his bravado, his track record with women had always been nil...until you that is.
Considering how much he loved you and how you returned his affection to an equal degree, it was only a matter of time before you both went on to share the same bed. However, the gunman was adamant not to lay a single inappropriate hand on you when you yourself hadn’t asked such intimate touches from him.
That is what made this whole situation even more painful for the blonde.
Huddled together in a small bed in an inn, your legs were intertwined with his while the rest of your body was pressed against him, your soft flesh rubbing against the hard planes of his own especially as you seemed to enjoy squirming frequently. Vash could feel all the blood in his head traveling downwards in hypersonic speed, leaving him panting and whimpering as his hands clenched and unclenched in his efforts to stay completely still.
It didn’t help that you would burrow your face into the crook of his neck, your warm breath hitting his overheated skin and the little to no distance between you two allowing him to smell the combined scent of your shampoo and your natural smell.
All of it made him so painfully hard.
“Baby, you’re too harsh on meeeeee!”

A fancier name for the bounce it down and you go up theory of lift is "Newtonian flow theory", because Newton in Principia wrote about fluid flow consisting of a stream of particles.
Ordinarily this is not a great theory about how planes fly, because it would seem to predict that only the air that hits the underside of the wing matters, whereas in reality more than half of the lift comes from deflecting the airstream above the wing.
However, it is a good first-pass model of lift in hypersonic airplanes! They move so quickly that the air far away from the plane doesn't "have time" to react, so to a first approximation you can dispense with the sophisticated fluid dynamics and just think of molecules bouncing against the airplane body. (I'm summarizing this web page now.)
For example this explains why the B-70 Valkyrie looked like it did, with the wings mostly flat on top and the engines sticking out underneath.
You get that design from the "momentum principle": if the fuselage was symmetric you'd get neutral lift, while if you leave just the lower half of it, it will deflect air downwards but not upwards, creating lift.
And the same principle also explains why the wingtips fold down: it takes some of the air that was deflected sideways and redirects it downwards for additional lift.
