Flipping the Switch

Today is the day where a new chapter begins for me.

The idea for today was to meet up with an old friend, Nico, to talk about filming a feature that is to be posted on the Simplex Minds Youtube channel. We talked about the project and what my vision for the feature is. As we were talking about the project, Simplex, and his entrepreneurial journey he decided to bring out a passion project of his that he's been wanting to do called, Game 16.

A little backstory on Nico is that he is a world-renowned bboy (breakdancer). He has been training and competing in the art since he was 12. He is currently 26. Since COVID hit he had to shift his thinking from competing and sustaining a lifestyle for himself to a mindset of building a system that can keep him, his family, and chosen family sustained.

He bought out a vape shop during the pandemic, built a secondary location in Phoenix, and now opened a coffee shop / cigar lounge / nursery with his friends and family. He spent the past two years learning and building businesses.

Now getting back to today. Nico pitched to me this idea he has called "Game 16". The gist is that he wants to get back into the breaking scene and wants to qualify to compete in the 2024 Olympics. That will be his 16th year breaking and kind of like his last hoorah. With that, he wants to build a docu-series around that storyline.

He wants to create a docu-series following him and his endeavors in trying to compete at the highest level once again. He is trying to do all of this while also maintaining his shops and pursuing his passion for music.

With Simplex, this is something that works beautifully with the brand. With Simplex I want to be able to get into the nitty gritty with creatives. I want people to view other's processes. The highs and lows that comes with the journey.

The idea right now is to have Game 16 be it's own brand in collaboration with Simplex Minds. Game 16 will have it's own channel, branding, and social platforms. It will be a project that lives and dies at the end of this journey.

Tomorrow I will be telling my current work that I will not be renewing my contract with them and I will be freelancing full time at Nico's shops, helping with whatever I can in order to make some money and help their businesses grow. I will also be working on Simplex Minds every second I can. I will also be Nico's personal videographer and creative director for Game 16.

The balance between everything is going to be a challenge. Figuring out the workflow is going to be a challenge. Getting budget is going to be a challenge. Managing Simplex at the same time is going to be difficult. BUT you only get an opportunity like this one time in your life. The timeline for this project is at max going to be 2 years long.

I need to go hard during these next two years. I will create some of the most beautiful videos I can. I will be building networks. I will be making sure to create all of the projects that I can.

It will be difficult. There will be times I am sure I will want to give up. But, the only way through is through. I have to stick it out and see where it goes. This is a huge opportunity that I can't just pass up. Too many things are aligning right now.

I am very hyped and scared for the future. I won't be getting younger. I won't have the freedom to go after this later on. 2023 is going to be a rollercoaster and I'm about to take my seat and see where it takes me.

Basic details: I found this stream on EDMtrain, and the link lead me to a Twitch livestream from Wax Motif. I recognized Wax Motif trending on the music page of Twitch before, but I realized that Lucati would be doing a set as a featured DJ for two hours before the Wax Motif as the headliner went on. The livestream began at 6:30 PDT on Tuesday, May 25, (the artists are based in Los Angeles), and immediately, the chat box was inundated with hype messages for Lucati. I learned later that a few days before the livestream, both Wax Motif and Lucati posted about the event daily on their Twitter and Instagram, encouraging the “Wax Gang” to show some love. The house lovers came in droves, reaching a max of 205 live listeners and 14,468 total views in the two hours I watched.

 Visual Experience: Lucati never stops energetically swaying side to side and bobbing up and down. Even when he takes a break to sip a drink or hit a vape, he’s always in the zone. I admitted to Haejin prior to the night that the particular reason why I wanted to join was because of a need for inspiring vibes. Her response:

[That’s] exactly why I wanted to do this dinner. Women empowering and inspiring other women.

Because the lead-up alone nourishingly hyped the Queens up, entering the venue felt magical. Womxn  gathered glammed-up in their own unique styles; rose was poured alongside the night’s  roses; and, as we mingled with each other in the nicely dimmed San Franciscan loft, the first two courses were passed out to give us a teaser of the glorious flavors composed by the Big Bad Wolf.

The two appetizers included a warm and crisp pan-fried savory mochi (mm) and a pine nut purée that felt like a hug from the inside of your belly (not pictured because I ate it right away… same with the second one I ate.) What I also wish I took a photo of was Haejin passing out vapes on a silver platter. I don’t indulge in smoking but, c’mon, look how cute this is ( + bonus points for the organic, local, sustainable  shout-out):

Greeting us to our assigned seats was a simple & elegant table setting with our take-home gifts, including  osmanthus honey brittle and two sorts of wrapped up flowers, one with our names handwritten.

Once everyone made their way to their seats, Haejin welcomed us with an opening speech about how this dinner is the most meaningful one she put together to-date.  She referred to the guest list as powerful and, you know, Big Bad Queens.

She then redirected the floor to Kayko Tamaki  for a ceremonial soundbath. Kayko guided us into meditative thoughts of how extraordinary womxnhood is and to honor our connection to ourselves, our bodies, and the earth herself.

Then came the feast. And, while indulging, Haejin had one rule. She wanted us to further connect with each other by engaging in one small yet meaningful task: pour each other’s glasses. For the first round, we raised up our ceremonial tincture to drink together.

The night wasn’t only about gathering Big Bad Queens together, it was about filling us with goodness. In Haejin’s welcoming speech, she shared how she did research on foods that are healthy for women’s reproductive systems. Our tastebuds, tummies, and vaginas thank you.

The main courses included: a banchan flight, chicken dumpling, bo ssam, and spicy mussels with soba noodles. From the presentation to the taste and portions, wow. I really don’t know the right words. How about this; every dish made each guest close their eyes and mutter words along the lines of omg… so good…

Last — and definitely not the least — were “double chocolate brownies with toasted hazelnuts, raspberries and dusted with a pink Himalayan matcha salt.” Holy Sh*t. I forreal slumped my head back upon taking the first bite and whispered to my chocolate, “ I didn’t know how much I needed you in my life.” Next thing you know, Haejin catches me and says, “Look at you eating that chocolate like a queen.”  I was too betwixt reveling in the chocolate to ask if there were any more.

Erin is confidently wearing her hair in cute afros now in a bandanna and she prefers her style to be light academia and dak academia, 2000s while Sasha wears popular girl 2000s clothes and Preppy, girly girl! While Tabii wears cute 2000s-90s-farmcore outfits and she has an glass eye to replace her eye or other times she has help with Erin since she's half blind

Sasha and Erin do Mathetlees together because they're a great team plus Erin helps her study too so her best friends won't be behind in their work.

Erin also wears braids too while Sasha and Tabii hype her up to wear her natural hair more often instead of two days and they appreciate it so much.

Tabii has gotten over Neil but she and him are good friends and she is not as crazy and obsessive over him.

Tabii has an after school job She works as a volunteer nurse to help with sick people

Erin studies in AP classes every single day and ropes Sasha in it as well Sasha called it "Boring" but Erin encouraged her to try at least 2-3 classes which Sasha did but stuck to one class since she's got cheerleading and track.

Tabii is also good friends with Space Kid and Max, and of course Jermy Fartz too.

Sasha, Erin and Tabii Stay away from people who vape and smoke cigarettes.

Erin's Favorite Class is AP History and AP Math while Sasha's favorite is Chemistry and English while Tabii really adores Art.

This Week in Apps: Apple’s vaping app ban, Disney+ gets installed, apps gear up for Black Friday

Welcome back to This Week in Apps, the Extra Crunch series that recaps the latest OS news, the applications they support, and the money that flows through it all. What are developers talking about? As mid-November rolls around, we’re looking at a few big stories, including Apple’s decision to ban an entire category of apps due to health concerns, the launch of Disney+ from an app perspective, what Black Friday will mean for e-commerce apps, and more.

With Disney+’s huge launch (10+ million users!) on everyone’s minds, it’s time to think about what these streaming newcomers mean for the overall landscape and the app stores. In this case, it seems that Disney+’s user base was highly mobile. The company itself announced more than 10 million users, while data on the Disney+ app’s first few days indicates it now has over 10 million downloads. It seems like consumers definitely want to take their new streaming service with them everywhere they go.

In 2020, App Annie forecasts consumers will spend more than 674 billion hours in the Entertainment and Video Player and Editor categories worldwide on Android phones, up from an expected 558 billion hours in 2019. Thanks to Disney+, Apple TV+ and soon, HBO Max, Peacock and Quibi, to making the landscape both richer and more complicated.

On its launch day, Disney+ hit #1 by iPhone Overall downloads at 8 AM in the U.S. and at 11 AM in Canada — an indication of the ability that strong IP has can really excite consumers to come out in droves. (Unfortunately, that led to some launch day glitches, too.)

Apptopia estimated Disney+ was downloaded 3.2 million times in its first 24 hours. The firm also estimated users collectively spent 1.3 million hours watching Disney+ on day one — ahead of Amazon Prime Video, but well behind Netflix.

Sensor Tower waited to collect a little more data instead. It found that the Disney+ app was installed approximately 9.6 million times in all available markets (the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands), since its U.S. launch on Tuesday, Nov. 12. For comparison’s sake, HBO Now’s U.S. launch only saw 180,000 installs in its first three days — or 2% of the Disney+ total. Combined with the test period installs in the Netherlands, the app has now been installed over 10 million times.

The hype around Disney+ has had a halo effect. Hulu and ESPN, which were offered in a bundle with Disney+, also grew as a result of the Disney+ launch. Sensor Tower found combined users of the apps in the U.S. and Canada were up 30% in the past week over the week prior.

Now, Apple has made the controversial decision to remove all 181 vaping-related apps from its App Store — including those with news and information about vaping and even vaping-related games, Axios reported this week.

Some say Apple is helping to protect kids and teens by limiting their exposure to e-cigarette and vaping products, which are being used to addict a younger generation to nicotine and cause serious disease. Others argue that Apple is over-reaching. After all, many of the lung illnesses involve people who were vaping illegally obtained THC, studies indicated.

This isn’t the first time Apple has banned a category of apps because of what appear to be moral concerns. The company in the past had booted apps that promoted weed or depicted gun violence, for example. In the case of vaping apps, Apple cited the public health crisis and youth epidemic as contributing factors, telling Axios that:

We take great care to curate the App Store as a trusted place for customers, particularly youth, to download apps. We’re constantly evaluating apps, and consulting the latest evidence, to determine risks to users’ health and well-being. Recently, experts ranging from the CDC to the American Heart Association have attributed a variety of lung injuries and fatalities to e-cigarette and vaping products, going so far as to call the spread of these devices a public health crisis and a youth epidemic. We agree, and we’ve updated our App Store Review Guidelines to reflect that apps encouraging or facilitating the use of these products are not permitted. As of today, these apps are no longer available to download.

Existing users will still be able to use their apps, but new users will not be able to download the banned apps going forward.

Minecraft Earth arrives 

Minecraft Earth launched early last week across 9 countries on both Android and iOS and now it’s come to the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and several other markets. Some expect the app will rival the success of the AR breakout hit, Pokémon Go, which was thought at the time to be the precursor to a new wave of massive AR gaming titles. But in reality, that didn’t happen. The highly anticipated follow-up from Niantic, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite didn’t come close to competing with its predecessor, generating $12 million in its first month, compared with Pokémon Go’s first-month earnings of $300 million. With Minecraft Earth now sitting at No. 2 (c’mon, you can’t unseat Disney+) on the U.S. App Store, it seems there’s potential for another AR kingpin.

App Annie releases a user acquisition playbook

A top name in App Store intelligence, App Annie this week released a new how-to handbook focused on user acquisition strategies on mobile. Sure the free download is just a bit of lead gen for App Annie, but the guide promises to fill you in on all you need to know to be successful in acquiring mobile users. The playbook’s arrival follows App Annie’s acquisition of adtech insights firm Libring this fall, as it expands to cover more aspects of running an app business. Just as important as rankings and downloads are the very real costs associated with running an app business — including the cost of acquiring users.

This Week in Apps: Apple’s vaping app ban, Disney+ gets installed, apps gear up for Black Friday

Welcome back to This Week in Apps, the Extra Crunch series that recaps the latest OS news, the applications they support, and the money that flows through it all. What are developers talking about? What do app publishers and marketers need to know? How are politics impacting the App Store and app businesses? And which apps are everyone using?

As mid-November rolls around, we’re looking at a few big stories, including Apple’s decision to ban an entire category of apps due to health concerns, the launch of Disney+ from an app perspective, what Black Friday will mean for e-commerce apps, and more.

With Disney+’s huge launch (10+ million users!) on everyone’s minds, it’s time to think about what these streaming newcomers mean for the overall landscape and the app stores. In this case, it seems that Disney+’s user base was highly mobile. The company itself announced more than 10 million users, while data on the Disney+ app’s first few days indicates it now has over 10 million downloads. It seems like consumers definitely want to take their new streaming service with them everywhere they go.

In 2020, App Annie forecasts consumers will spend more than 674 billion hours in the Entertainment and Video Player and Editor categories worldwide on Android phones, up from an expected 558 billion hours in 2019. Thanks to Disney+, Apple TV+ and soon, HBO Max, Peacock and Quibi, to making the landscape both richer and more complicated.

On its launch day, Disney+ hit #1 by iPhone Overall downloads at 8 AM in the U.S. and at 11 AM in Canada — an indication of the ability that strong IP has can really excite consumers to come out in droves. (Unfortunately, that led to some launch day glitches, too.)

Apptopia estimated Disney+ was downloaded 3.2 million times in its first 24 hours. The firm also estimated users collectively spent 1.3 million hours watching Disney+ on day one — ahead of Amazon Prime Video, but well behind Netflix.

Sensor Tower waited to collect a little more data instead. It found that the Disney+ app was installed approximately 9.6 million times in all available markets (the U.S., Canada, and the Netherlands), since its U.S. launch on Tuesday, Nov. 12. For comparison’s sake, HBO Now’s U.S. launch only saw 180,000 installs in its first three days — or 2% of the Disney+ total. Combined with the test period installs in the Netherlands, the app has now been installed over 10 million times.

The hype around Disney+ has had a halo effect. Hulu and ESPN, which were offered in a bundle with Disney+, also grew as a result of the Disney+ launch. Sensor Tower found combined users of the apps in the U.S. and Canada were up 30% in the past week over the week prior.
