September 14, 2022 - Blue-naped Pitta (Hydrornis nipalensis)
Found in parts of Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, and Vietnam, these pittas inhabit the undergrowth of forests, often near streams and rivers. Foraging on the forest floor, they eat mostly insects and other invertebrates, as well as small lizards and other vertebrates. Pairs build dome-shaped nests with side entrances from bamboo leaves, grass, and roots on the ground or low in bushes or trees. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.
