1948 Panhead. This is a completely stock bike. But for those with the keen eye will notice the 1949 front end. This 1948 came like that. It’s a late model from that year and when Harley was trying to fill orders so they ran out of the Springer front ends and put on the 1949 hydraglide front end.

Saw this beauty at Jeff’s American Classics which is a haven for old Harleys for parts completes, etc. it was a mind blowing experience. But this panhead stood out for me.

*Dit jaar 2003 begon goed: op radio Noord-Holland won ik een quiz. Dat deed ik wel meer maar dat bleef altijd bij paraplu's en CD-boxen. Deze keer de prijs: een week voor twee personen in een luxe appartement op Tenerife. De quizvraag was: hoe hoog is de berg IDA op het Griekse eiland Kreta? Meerkeuzeantwoord: 2250 meter hoog, 2350 meter of 2456 meter? Ik wist het juiste antwoord echt niet, maar de vraagstelling was zo doorzichtig dat alleen 2456 meter de juiste oplossing kon zijn. En dat klopte. Lekker onverwacht warm uitje op het eiland waar het altijd primavera = lente is en waar het zo heerlijk Spaans eten is.

*Op de wandel- en bromfietstochtjes, die ik met de kinderen maakte rond de Antillenstraat en het Vondelpark viel mij een aardig model Japanse motorfiets op, die achter het Concertgebouw in de van Breestraat stond te verpieteren: opgespat en opgedroogd zand op de banden, een aardig dik laagje stadsstof, duidelijk al lang niet meer gebruikt. Mijn motorfietsbloed kwam weer op stoom; als hij niet te duur was zou ik hem wel kopen... Ik wrikte een stuk karton met de vraag 'Te koop?' en mijn telefoonnummer tussen stuur en tank en wachtte af.

Een maand later nog steeds niks gehoord en opnieuw een bordje met dezelfde vraag geplaatst. Dit keer twee weken later wel BINGO!

De SUZUKI TEMPTER bleek van een student in de van Breestraat te zijn, die mij opbelde; hij had een paar van die oudere Japanners en wilde deze best weg doen. "Hoeveel wil je er voor hebben?" "Honderd euro." Verkocht.

De SUZUKI had 650 cc. cilinderinhoud. Da's lekker. (Mijn Harley Davidson Liberator 750 cc. en mijn Hydraglide 1200 cc.)

Met een kennis uit een garage maakten we de benzinetank schoon. Door het slotje in het deksel bovenop de tank was regenwater, sneeuw, dauw en dergelijke -de Suzuki had twee jaar buiten gestaan- de tank in gedruppeld.

Ik heb nog een video gemaakt van het moment van starten. In één keer startte ie! En wat reed dat totaal anders dan op die ouwe, maar o zo fraaie Harley's. Vergelijk het met een bonkige koekoeksklok en een Zwitsers precisiehorloge.

Op het internet maakte ik kennis met de Suzuki Tempter Holland Club. Bleek mijn aankoop een schot in de roos te zijn: er waren er maar 30 van in heel Europa. Ik werd stante pede door de emotionele voorzitter tot erelid benoemd, omdat ik een Tempter het leven had gered!

*Bijna was het zover: ik in deze fase van mijn leven, 54 jaar nu, aan de vaste baan, naar kantoor, werkroosters, elke dag heen en weer forensen naar de Bijlmer ArenA met de metro. Minstens een paar jaar. Voor de verblijfsvergunning van Yoriko. Nieuwe film, nieuwe scènes, ik maak er gewoon wat moois van. Nooit meer rillen of zeiknat worden op een filmset.

Via Hawaiïaanse Mark, die Yoriko bij het ROC was tegengekomen, en vooral zijn vriend Gijs kwam ik bij de alarmcentrale SOS-INTERNATIONAL terecht. Het was in ieder geval een baan waarbij je je hersens moest gebruiken. Mensen in nood, meestal op vakantie, belden de hele dag, of nacht als je die dienst had. Het meest over gestolen bankpassen >blokkeren, gebroken benen bij het skiën <gipsvlucht regelen en de caravan die in Italië het ravijn in is gegleden; "En oh ja meneer, oma zit er in..." >met Italiaanse garages en ziekenhuizen bellen. SOS-INTERNATIONAL is een verlengstuk van de verzekeringsmaatschappijen. Je kon iemand niet helpen als zijn of haar verzekeringen niet klopten.

Hopper and Fonda hosted a wrap party for the movie and then realised they hadn't shot the final campfire scene. Many other replicas have been built since the film’s release. The demolished bike was rebuilt by Dan Haggerty and shown in a museum. One "Captain America" was demolished in the final scene, while the other three were stolen and probably taken apart before their significance as movie props became known. Each bike had a backup to make sure that shooting could continue in case one of the old machines failed or got wrecked accidentally. The 1949, 19 Harley Davidson Hydraglide bikes were purchased at an auction for US$ 500 (equivalent to approx. In total, four former police bikes were used in the film. The motorcycles for the film, based on hardtail frames and Panhead engines, were designed and built by chopper builders Cliff Vaughs and Ben Hardy, following ideas of Peter Fonda, and handled by Tex Hall and Dan Haggerty during shooting. In an interview with Creative Screenwriting, Southern claimed, "Peter was to be the actor and producer, Dennis the actor and director, and a certain yours truly, the writer. In an interview with The Guardian, Dennis Hopper claimed that Terry Southern wrote nothing in the film besides contributing the title, as he broke his hip in a fall.

Some of the scenes which were in the original cut, but got deleted are: The original opening showing Wyatt and Billy performing in a Los Angeles stunt show (their real jobs), the two of them being ripped off by the promoter, getting in a biker fight, picking up women at a drive-in, cruising to, and escaping from Mexico to score the cocaine they sell, an elaborate police and helicopter chase that took place at the beginning after the dope deal, with police chasing Wyatt and Billy over mountains, and across the Mexican border, the road trip out of Los Angeles, edited to the full length of Steppenwolf's ''Born to Be Wild'' with billboards along the way offering wry commentary, Wyatt and Billy being pulled over by a cop while driving their motorcycles across highway, two of them encountering the black motorcycle gang, ten additional minutes for the volatile café scene in Louisiana, where George deftly keeps the peace, Wyatt and Billy checking in a hotel before going over to Madam Tinkertoy's, extended and much longer Madam Tinkertoy sequence, extended versions of all of the campfire scenes, including the enigmatic finale in which Wyatt says ''We blew it, Billy.'' All deleted footage is believed to be lost. There are various reports about exact running time of original rough cut of the movie Four hours, four and a half hours, or five hours.
