Air quality today is nowhere worse in the world than in SFO. But that doesn't stop us from diving into the companies in the Valley. @gertchristen @kneschi8 @Ollie.kraft @claudiablaeue @comboeuf @manuelnappo #hwzsv @fhhwz #hwzdigitalleader (hier: SAP.iO) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqQK2tUl8u2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=7c86kcelwjdy

Rediscovering my own backyard
I have been spending a few days with a group of visitors from abroad visiting different companies around Silicon Valley in the quest for the latest innovation. While fun and cool, these three days have been a revealing discovery of my own biases and understanding of what is Silicon Valley. During these visits, I have found myself defending certain attitudes and positions of some of the outfits that we visit. And that makes me feel like a bit of a sucker. I don't owe them anything... On second thought (well perhaps third or fourth), I realize that my reaction is not to defend these companies but rather to defend my own interpretation and understanding of this crazy place called Silicon Valley. I realize that I've built a pretty tidy picture of Silicon Valley and its innovation ecosystem. Surrounded by a group of outsiders, however, this picture has started to shift and tilt under the shake of keen observation, criticisms, and differing opinions. While not collapsing completely, it has changed--for the best, I think. Sometimes I get annoyed by some of the criticisms and rants from our visitors but I have tried really hard to listen and ponder their questions with an open mind. For example, I admit that: Yes, these companies can look like kindergartens with their playpens and ice cream shops Yes, it is possible some of the people that work there hate their jobs Yes, it is possible that these companies don't really care very much about their users—no matter what their motto is! Yes, engineers cannot always articulate the vision of the company they work for Yes, it's weird to visit a company and look at people working at their desks like animals in a zoo But I still believe that this is the place of dreamers, where the spirit of "can do" is stronger than the "not possible." I still believe in the hopes of entrepreneurs with vision that start sentences with: "We have a vision that xx will radically transform peoples' lives." I eat that stuff up. I want to fill bottles and bottles with this "stuff" and believe that the future is brighter and shinier. With two more days left in our program, I do not know how much more my tidy pretty picture will be altered by the views of my friends. It might look a little messier, with the coloring outside the edges. Perhaps more like the real thing but I hope there's still a double rainbow popping through the clouds. We shall see...
