Hitchin' Post Motel, 3640 Las Vegas Blvd N., North Las Vegas.
The motel opened in 1948 on the Salt Lake Hwy (US 91 & 93). A separate coffee shop was open by '55. The road was renamed Las Vegas Blvd North.
E.T. and Lila Nollner sold the 12-acre property to James & Gloria Childress in '70. Childress developed an adjacent RV park. The Coffee Shop became Hitchin' Post Saloon and Steakhouse at a later date.
Three postcards, undated, circa late 40s-early 60s.

1970’s- Structures like this can be found throughout the Appalachian Mountains. They bear witness to a time when Appalachians were off the grid. They are a monument to Appalachian’s blood, sweat, and tears. A time when people were self employed for survival and there was nothing that they needed that the mountains couldn't supply them.
This beautiful rock chimney once sat in a field on Hwy 70 near Vernon Bradley Road in Old Fort in McDowell County,North Carolina.

if’n you follow this blog, you likely love appalachia, or at least the aesthetic of it that i cultivate on here. i am begging yall: love us here, yes, but please remember to also love us in-person. don’t forget about us. my home, WNC, has been absolutely walloped by this hurricane. they’ve been devastated, and once the media stops talking about us (which they hardly talked about us to begin with) we’ll still be in ruins and we’ll still need help. donate directly to mutual aid organizations and to small businesses who are trying to recover.

Evacuation orders have been issued for the entire village of Ruidoso. The only available exit is Hwy 70 towards Roswell.
Enmu- Roswell is set up as a shelter for evacuees. If anyone has facilities in the Roswell area that is willing to help house livestock/pets for evacuees, please let us know so that we can get the information to those needing a place for their animals.
Pray for Ruidoso!

“We speak often, and sentimentally, of being 'enchanted' by the natural world. But what if it's the other way around? What if we are enchanted, literally, by the human world we live in? That seems entirely more likely - that the consumer world amounts to a kind of lulling spell, chanted tunefully and eternally by the TV, the billboard, the suburb. A spell that convinces us that the things we want most from the world are comfort, convenience, security. A spell that by now we sing to each other. A spell that, should it start to weaken, we try to strengthen with medication, with consumption, with noise. A slight frantic enchantment, one that has to get louder all the time to block out the troubling question constantly forming in the back of our minds: 'Is this all there is?” ― Bill McKibben, When the Wild Comes Leaping Up: Personal Encounters with Nature

Y'all wanna see a time capsule? This house is near my childhood stomping grounds and is pure 70s on the inside down to the wood-paneled walls. Except for the carpet, I love it.

I cannot express how beautiful a scenic overlook facing west toward the valley between mountains on hwy 111 was which I realized too late to change lanes and stop there, which was followed by the most harrowing wet and dark exodus toward i75. But it cleared up when I hit the state line and I'm in GA at a CHIPOTLE and I only have like 70 miles left

List: The Oldest Bars in Las Vegas
Atomic Liquors at dawn in 1993. Photo by Valentin Wuebben.
Tracking the oldest standalone bars in Las Vegas is a complicated by the matter of a few of them changing names, locations, or having fuzzy math in their own history. This list is not carved in stone but as far as I can tell the standalone bars opened prior to the '70s are ....
ATOMIC LIQUORS (917 Fremont) – opened 4/17/54. We have a longer piece covering Atomic’s history and sources for this date.
DINO’S LOUNGE (1516 S Las Vegas Blvd) – They’ve had this name since ’69, but the bar dates back to this location as Ringside Liquors since ’53, and at a previous location since the late 40s. Their motto “Getting Vegas Drunk Since ’62” refers specifically to the business’s incorporation date. '53, '62, '69 are all correct dates depending on the details.
HUNTRIDGE TAVERN (1116 E Charleston Blvd) – circa ’62, after starting at a nearby location, 1320 E Charleston, in ’54. Founder W.L. “Buzz” Holst and family opened several drug stores and bars including the next one on this list.
DECATUR LIQUORS (546 S Decatur Blvd) – ’63
4 MILE BAR (3650 Boulder Hwy) – ’63
TAP HOUSE (5589 W Charleston Blvd) – opened as Wild Bill’s Bar in '65. It went through a few names in the 70s and has been known as Tap House since ’85.
CHAMPAGNE’S CAFE (3557 S Maryland Pkwy) – opened under a different name in ’66; Champagne’s Cafe since ‘95. It was originally Sundown Liquors and Cocktail Lounge opened in ’66, a liquor store up front and a lounge in the back. It was combined into one room that exists today and was previously known as Jerry’s Inner Circle (’68), Huey’s Saloon (’77), Jerry’s Saloon (’87), Ole Inner Circle (’93), and Champagne Charlie’s.
FRANKIE’S (1712 W Charleston Blvd) – Frank August opened Frankie’s Cocktails in '68. It’s been known as Frankie’s Tiki Lounge since 2009.
A couple in '70 ...
Hard Hat Lounge (1675 S Industrial Rd) – ’70. Their “Est. '62” motto works as a reference both to their ’62 building and to the beloved ’62 mural in the bar which came from its previous location under the name Bourbon Street Lounge. The building was home to The Coffee Pot and Squaw's Corner, until the owners of Bourbon Street Lounge moved here and opened Hard Hat Lounge.
Starboard Tack (2601 Atlantic St) – also opened in ’70 according to some records, or ‘71 at the latest. Their website says “since ’72.”
Elsewhere ...
Pioneer Saloon (Goodsprings NV) - Built by George Fayle circa '13, without a doubt the oldest bar in Clark County, Nevada.
Gold Mine (Henderson NV) - "Hendertucky's Oldest Tavern," was licensed to Henderson councilman Giles L. Franklin in Sep. '65.
Not quite on the Oldest Bar list ...
70s: Red Dwarf (1350 Vegas Valley Dr). Opened in '73 as The Rib Cage, and also known as Penthouse '77, Keyboard Lounge '79 owned by Harry Wham, and the Smuggle Inn from the '80s-2010s when the bar also sold cocaine. Red Dwarf took over in the 2020s.
70s: Double Down Saloon (4640 Paradise Rd). There was a bar here called John John’s Cocktail Lounge here in '74, then it was called Dreamworld which might have been a disco. For many years in between it was a restaurant rather than a bar. Double Down opened in ’92.
80s: Sand Dollar Lounge (3355 Spring Mountain Rd). Similar to Hard Hat, Sand Dollar's motto “Est. ‘76” may refer to the building itself. Sand Dollar Lounge opened in ‘83 and there was no bar, lounge, or music venue at this location prior to Sand Dollar.
90s: The Hideaway Tavern (3369 Thom Blvd). Their motto is “Friendliest bar in town since '62,” however Hideaway opened in a new building in the 90s. The '62 date refers to the property history. In '63 (not '62) a building was relocated here from downtown’s “old ranch” aka the Old Mormon Fort State Park. The building that was moved from the old ranch was a 50s-era structure for a restaurant connected to the ranch house. At 3369 Thom Blvd the building was repurposed by Larry LaPenta as into Lorenzo’s dinner club, later know as Old Ranch House Supper Club, and Larry’s Old Ranch House. It was demolished in the 90s, and replaced by a new building which opened as Larry’s Hideaway. After a change of ownership it became The Hideaway Tavern. The changes to the structures can be seen in USGS aerial photos, and Clark County Assessor dates The Hideaway Tavern to '93.
2000s: Bar Code (1590 E Flamingo). Opened as The Elbow Room in '68, closed in the 90s, this building was expanded and completely redesigned at different times in the '70s-90s.
Missing any?
This started as a post on Vintage Las Vegas Instagram. Thanks to CityCast Las Vegas: An Inside Look at the Oldest Dive Bars in Vegas.

Truck and trailer traffic on I-70, some of which traffic is a truck hauling two more trucks.
It's been a while since -- long story -- but a weekend trip to Pittsburgh (like I do) did result in a few photos.

For instance: if you're just driving by, you can catch a quick glimpse of your next truck! Or excavation equipment! Big, small, and nearly anything in between!

Not sure which area, but that trailer is it maybe, or it's going there, I guess. In the westbound lanes you can see a truck full of mail.

A construction project in Columbus that -- I thought would have been done by now; it's been in progress for some time. Elevated roadways and flyovers leading to elevated streets on the south side of downtown.

Zanesville: stay on target! Stay on target!

Dave's Guns!

The Cardinal Power Plant, near Brilliant, OH on the Ohio River: a 21st Century Romantic image -- sublime in the beauty, and the terror of all that comes with coal-fired power.
I most often take Ohio Hwy 7 north off of I-70 to pass Weirton, WV on the way to Pittsburgh; I like driving through the Ohio Valley, and I like missing traveling on I-79 between Washington, PA and Pittsburgh. The trip up OH 7 serves this view, and I've taken similar shots in the past 'cause I appreciate the contrast -- it's just so America.
Westbound a couple days later included rain, which mostly precluded shooting, but I did a few.
Like this encapsulation of the United States:

Shortly after that came the slow traffic. I thought it was because of road work (orange cone season is most any time these days) but it was because of a wreck. Somehow a tractor trailer got smashed, littering the roadway with food cans.
Drawing up to the recovery area, I saw food cans scattered beyond the shoulder, then saw a skip loader shoveling cans off the highway:

into one of two (or more) roll-off dumpsters; there was another dumpster still on its truck, and I've no knowing if there was a dumpster before this one.
The trailer looked like something exploded -- and threw cans all over the place:

how that happens? Someone might have an idea, but I don't. Though it's hard to discern, some three-quarters of the trailer is still loaded with canned food.
And about two hours later, the clouds let up:

at least enough to look kinda' pretty.
R. Jake Wood, 2025

This building is located on Hwy 70 near Berry Road in Connelly Springs in Burke County, North Carolina. It was built circa 1930.
The small, one-story, front-gable-roofed, stone store has a storefront window that has been enlarged to contain a double-leaf garage door. A second such opening was cut into the west side of the building.
