Do you find that your interpretations of your character changes as you get older/learn more about the world around you? For example, a soft character may have started innocent but they (and, by extension, you) choose to keep them that way despite the harshness of the world? Does your character's expertise on a subject change as you become more familiar with it, etc.?

This question has made me think a lot and my thoughts went many different ways, so please forgive me if I get incoherent and/or start digressing~

In general, I'd say my interpretation of my characters kind of depends on my mental and emotional state, but also on where I am with my life and what kind of stories and motifs I'm currently into, and what I'm fed up with. There was a time when I thought of kind and gentle characters as too sweet and naive, but later I learnt to admire them. How about those who are serious and brooding? Younger me thought they were So Cool. Older me wanted to make fun of them. Current me just waits and sees what they do.

That said, most of my characters have been with me for many years, decades even - and then there's Helvi, who's only been there since, 2018, but I started playing for serious in 2019! Given that time is a weird soup and the years 2020-2023 have blended into one short period of time in my mind, it feels like two years at most, so I'm not sure whether I got older or more experienced in such a short time XD

But! One of the very few things I've known about her since the very beginning is that she follows Menphina and it makes love one of the big recurring themes of her story. It got me wonder, how to interpret her faith, because, really, there are so many ways you can go to express it! Will you share your love with your family? Friends? Paramour(s)? Nation? Random people you meet on your way? Do you pray for everyone's successful love life or just focus on your own? Seek your fairy tale romance or indulge in daydreams? Have many lovers or commit to one relationship, or maybe fill your heart with pure love for the whole world instead? So many possibilities and for a long time I didn't know what to choose...

Then it turned out there was room in her heart for all of the above, to some extent.

But let me tell you it wasn't easy to figure out for quite a while. See, from Heavensward to Shadowbringers I played with no long breaks. I had all these expansions, so I jumped from one story right into another and didn't give myself much time to sit down and think. After the emotional rollercoaster that was HW, I mostly ran Helvi through SB on autopilot, and then another rollercoaster came along... And she felt so tired most of the time, so exhausted and still the kindest soul ever, but distant and withdrawn at the same time. She spent a lot of time grieving and self-loathing And I asked myself: is she going to get better? Can she get better? Can she fall in love again? Does she even want to? And at that time, the answer was 'no'. She seemed.. resigned to her fate. Reached into her own soul and found darkness, and decided to embrace it and use it to fight. And it seemed like she would be hardened that way.

Then, there was a long break between ShB and EW, and I could finally think in peace, share my thoughts with friends and answer their countless and valuable questions, and even write a few snippets, putting her feelings and some events from her life. I let her go back and do some thinking in peace too. She let herself laugh heartily again. She didn't stop being a dark knight, but simply added red magic and dancing to her fighting skills and thus found the balance she needed. She made peace with herself. She even fell in love again, after all, and is not going to let this love go. Now, in any friend group, she's that friend who gives away hugs freely and dotes upon everyone, and dances like no one's watching, and also defends you fiercely.

I know I'm rambling, but all I want to say there is a big difference between playing with or without long breaks and it may change your perspective and interpretation of your character :D

I love your interpretation of norway, so whatever you come up with I am sure it will be great! I especially love when his family is involved☺️🥹 also, there has not been a lot of norway/nordic centered fics as of lately on ao3🧐 it seems like it's very quiet🤧 wherever I try to search through the "aph/hws norway" tag on ao3 now, it's always just him being a side character in someone else's story😓 and if it is a fic about him where he is the main character it's always just ship😩 (this is not ship bashing btw! but it's just a little frustrating that it seems to be no new fresh fics of norway just...being himself I guess?) not that there's anything wrong with throwing in some romance here and there! I loved scotnor in your fic <3 but when you go through the tag of norway on ao3 now, I guarantee you that 90% of the fics are just ship centered or him being a side character, like, where are the fics of norway who love to tease his brothers (*ehem ehem* especially sweden)? where are the fics about uncle norway babysitting his nephews? where are the fics about viking norway and all his adventures? or the fics of norway and denmark being idiots together? sorry at this point I'm just babbling🙈 it's just that, norway has SOOOO much potential as a character to be explored! but in the end he is always just the "side piece" to someone else in a lot of fics😔 and I swear, If I had the power to write (and wasn't so shy), I would write so many norway/nordic centered fics to fill a whole book📚☕️��

I completely understand what you mean here and I think a lot of people probably go into fanfic writing because they don't find the content they want to read themselves (myself included) ✨

I've definitely ran into the same issues as you in the past, with a lot of Nordic centered fics revolving around ships I'm personally not a fan of and portrayals of characters that I feel the same about. There's a lot of potential for delving more into platonic relations within the Nordics as well as with other nations and exploring many topics. I think I would probably read more Nordic centered fics myself too if more of them were like that.

I'm so happy you like my Norway portrayal tho! and scotnor 🙈💖 hearing that definitely keeps me motivated to create more, and these asks make me want to write more now too 😂 I'd love to read anything you create in the future as well - seems like you have a lot of good ideas 😊

Hi, I'm also not the original asakiku anon, but regarding Japan and China fics, I recommend downloading the Asia edition of the following historical hetalia zine. The artists/writers are predominantly Asian and other POC. There’re multiple entries about Japan and China’s relationships with other Asians, listed chronologically below. A number explore Japanese imperialism really well too.

I encourage you and anyone else to also read the contributors' historical footnotes, to understand their characterization of Yao and Kiku and why it differs from how western fandom often overemphasizes them being soft, shy, cute, or emotionally-repressed/stunted next to more expressive white characters. I get that most ppl incl you aren’t ill-intentioned and are maybe thinking it makes Kiku (or Yao) endearing. But some tropes that are innocuous for white characters are condescending and inappropriate for fics where Yao and Kiku represent old nations. Because they stem from harmful, historical orientalist stereotypes that simplify, fetishize and infantilize east asians in very problematic ways to be love interests for white characters, and this was a distinct problem with how Kiku was depicted in SPE.

Additionally, intra-Asian relationships are important to providing more holistic characterization, because another issue is when i) historical hetalia fics make Japan or China disproportionately trusting or devoted to a white fave, while minimizing irl racism/imperialism they faced from said Western country in the interests of romance ii) while downplaying or omitting intra-Asian relationships that were in reality equally or far more important to Japan and China to center whiteness. As a Sino fan, I ship Asian+Western characters too (Eng/chu, Ame/pan), so I'm not against that. What I mean is being mindful, acknowledging unequal dynamics/grievances that did affect ties between that Asian and Western country as challenges the characters have to work through (or fail to do so, with consequences), and also visibly integrating Yao and Kiku's important relationships with other Asians into their characterization. Just as I’m sure few England fans would dispute France’s importance to England, even if Fruk isn’t their OTP, and would include him as a character in an England fic. I hope this all makes sense.

20. the romance family but the genre is gonna surprise you

to explain the au itself because it is one of my absolute favourites: Romulus is a Classical Archaeologist who juggles active field work and teaching, but his favourite job of all is being a parent to his adoptive sons: Francis, Henrique, Antonio, Lorenzo and Feliciano (these last two being his actual nephews), and the newest addition, Vladimir. all of them are from localities he's worked in, and come from quite rough or sad backgrounds; Romulus strives to make their lives better. with the arrival of Vladimir at the villa in Lazio, however, it might just turn out that Romulus has brought back more than just a new son and some fancy trinkets from his latest archaeological dig.

here's a snippet from what would be the first chapter:

Vladimir was having a nap in the back of the car. Romulus was almost envious. He knew he’d need to turn in early that night in order to properly get himself back in normal working order after being on the road for so long, but how easy that would be, given that he’d been away for two weeks and also had a new son to help settle in, was up for debate. At least he had called Francis ahead of time and asked him to see to dinner for everyone. That would be one less worry on his mind.

Up the final little hill they went together, around the bend into a lone nook at the cusp of the National Park. Romulus’ villa—the home they all shared—sat looking over the valley to the West, a small lake, and the local town. It was a pretty good size, bearing in mind that seven of them would now be living under its roof, filling it, as he hoped, with yet more laughter and warmth. It was all he really wanted—and that was for them, not for himself.

As he pulled up into the drive and shut off the engine, he let out a calm but loud sigh of relief. The time on the dashboard said it had only just gone seven. Home at last.

From behind him, there was some stirring, and Vladimir pulled himself upright with a stifled yawn and a groan, rubbing his eye. He’ll sleep well tonight, Romulus thought to himself, a small smile on his face as he turned to look at the boy.

“We’ve arrived,” he said. “Welcome home, tesorino!”

A vibrancy appeared in the teen’s face, a sort of joy he hadn’t yet seen in him before. Vladimir hurried to open the car door and step out into the mellow warmth of the valley. His smile only grew when he saw the house. Each little detail—from the arches, to the cream shutters, from potted plants, to the flaking paint on the exterior walls—was likely absorbed and committed to memory.

For Romulus, this was always such a precious moment. Six children, four moments like this now, and never did it tire. Everyone was different. But that light in their faces and the glint of hope in their eyes… There was no greater treasure to be found, no matter how much he dug or how far he searched.

He came to Vladimir’s side after getting out of the car and set a hand on his shoulder. The Romanian turned his smile to him and he smiled back, and Vladimir hugged him in a sudden jump, holding on tight. Romulus put a hand to his hair and returned the embrace. This is it, this is how it's meant to be. Now, he told himself, that's one more saved soul.

“Zio, zio!”

Hurried footsteps padded over the tiles of the veranda and Romulus suddenly received a second hug-attack. His youngest nephew (or his son; they were all his sons, really, regardless of blood) was clinging to his leg, bless. Vladimir had been just as surprised by the interruption and had let go to look at the young boy curiously, Feliciano too occupied with hugging the life out of Romulus’ leg to pay it any mind.

From the villa, other footsteps and voices came. It seemed that the entire congregation had appeared to greet them. Lorenzo, his other nephew (son) had quickly joined his brother in hugging Romulus, and the remaining three were waiting a few paces away, perhaps a little wiser than to completely overwhelm him and Vladimir straight away. Grazie a Dio! As such, Francis stood with Henrique and Antonio, all sharing in that mellow, ochre-hued happieness, as having everyone be reunited. (That was, until Francis swung an arm over Antonio’s shoulder, and then Henrique’s, and while the latter tried to push him off and a brief tickle fight ensued, Antonio was laughing at them both.)

Still, it felt… good, to be home. Romulus had no plans to go away or work during the summer while the schools were closed and he could give them more of his time and attention. For now, he would stay with them and enjoy watching them continue to grow. He would make those vital memories with them.

His attention returned to Vladimir, who was still quiet. He was looking at the others—his new siblings—and he seemed nervous. Shy, even. He held onto Romulus’ hand.

“It’s okay,” Romulus assured him. By now, Feliciano and Lorenzo had let go, to his relief, and had returned to their older counterparts (no doubt on request). “This is home, now. And they—” He gestured to the quintet. “—are your brothers. Do you want me to introduce you to them?”

Vladimir hesitated to give a nod, but it came in the end. That small smile was back on his face. Romulus supposed that having people in his life now that he could call his brothers when his own blood brother had gone missing so long ago… Perhaps this would help fill a small hole in his life, even if only a little.

Keeping a hold of the teen’s hand, Romulus led him up towards the veranda, where the others were all standing around having a laugh and a chat. A light cough came from Romulus to regain their attention, and the five of them became all smiles and sunshine (well, nearly all of them; Lorenzo was still learning how to more positively emote, but at least he was making an effort to try and smile).

“Boys, this is Vladimir,” Romulus said to the group. He’d already discussed with them at length who he was over the past few months, shown them photos, reassured them of his character. “He’s had a long journey so let’s not bombard him or be too loud tonight, okay?”

He received an onslaught of nods and ‘occhei’s, and so Romulus started to introduce the five of them to Vladimir.

Francis was the eldest, having just turned eighteen. He was the head of the household when Romulus went away. Then there was Henrique, at seventeen, and his younger brother Antonio, who was sixteen. (Romulus realised in this moment that he would have to explain a few intricacies he perhaps hadn’t thought to mention just yet, relating to how they came to live with him and... other things... but that would be saved for later). The last of the bunch were his nephews: Lorenzo was next in line at thirteen years old, and Feliciano was the mimmo of the family, at only ten. That left Vladimir in the middle at fifteen.

The information was readily processed (and repeated by the new arrival, just to be sure) and, in natural fashion, Vladimir received a keen hug from Feliciano (the resident hug-bug), followed by everyone else—an all-encompassing embrace.

This was acceptance. This was the welcoming with open arms that Romulus had known would be given, that he'd waited over a year to be able to provide, and it was the family and care that Vladimir needed. At last, he told himself, he can be happy.

WHAT IS THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR FAMILY LIKE?:

salem  has  a  very  estranged  relationship  with  his  family.  any  feelings  he  has  toward  his  mother  are  entirely  negative  to  the  point  where  if  someone  were  to  ask  about  his  family,  he  would  say  his  mother  is  dead.  since  leaving  seattle,  salem  has  deleted  her  number  and  doesn’t  ask  about  her  whenever  he  speaks  to  his  aunt  —  though,  he  is  told  bits  of  information  by  his  aunt  but  it  goes  in  one  ear  and  out  the  other.  as  far  as  his  father  goes,  salem  has  no  clue  who  his  dad  is  and  considering  even  his  mother  has  not  the  slightest  idea,  it’s  not  a  concern  of  his.  salem  figures  if  he  managed  to  get  this  far  without  a  father  then  having  one  in  his  lis  is  not  important.  so  tracking  down  his  birth  father  isn’t  a  priority.  the  only  semblance  of  a  healthy  familial  relationship  that  salem  has  is  with  his  aunt.  she’s  the  one  who  helped  raise  salem  when  his  mother  couldn’t  and  was  the  closest  thing  to  a  support  system.  salem  holds  a  fondness  for  her  and  does  speak  to  her  and  his  cousin  with  weekly  calls.

salem  is  an  independent  person  who  dislikes  having  to  rely  on  other  people  whether  it  be  emotionally  or  in  a  physical  sense.  he  tends  to  keep  his  cards  close  to  his  chest,  offering  sharp  words  and  biting  cynicism  in  an  effort  to  keep  most  people  at  an  arms  length  distance.  despite  being  rather  reserved  and  judgemental,  salem  has  an  ability  to  switch  his  more  tenacious  personality  to  one  of  charisma  and  charm  when  it  suits  him.  given,  when  it  suits  him  is  mainly  at  work  where  he  knows  how  to  use  his  handsome  looks  and  honeyed  words  to  secure  a  generous  tip  from  those  he  serves.  having  been  as  independent  as  he  was  from  such  a  young  age,  it’s  a  way  of  life  that  salem  has  grown  accustomed  to  and  doesn’t  feel  the  need  to  really  change  that.  especially  since  he  knows  that  he,  himself,  is  the  only  real  person  he  can  count  on.

the  best  way  to  describe  it  is  a  temporary  happiness.  salem  feels  quite  accomplished  in  his  literary  career  with  his  published  poetry  collections,  as  well  as  his  current  work-in-progress  of  a  novel.  career  wise,  he  is  quite  happy  and  satisfied  for  where  he  is  and  the  success  he  has  achieved  through  his  writing.  that  being  said,  he  chooses  to  write  under  a  pseudonym  not  only  to  continue  on  in  a  sense  of  privacy,  but  also  so  it’s  not  easy  for  his  mother  to  check  up  on  him  .  also  he  knows  that  if  his  moderate  success  has  reached  her  that  she  would  reach  out,  but  only  to  ask  for  money.  taking  away  his  career  accomplishments,  salem  is  content  where  he  is,  but  not  happy.  though,  he  may  argue  that  the  closest  he’s  been  to  happy  is  when  his  first  poetry  collection  was  published.

At first I thought “oh shit, I dunno how to answer a lot of these…” but then I spent 208 minutes in a Labyrinth of the Ancients queue and HERE WE ARE. Thank u frend.  I know I can always count on you to indulge me.

1. What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?

Honestly I just wanted to play a dark-skinned character since my last MMO didn’t let you pick skin colors and I got bored of white being the “default.” And because no one asked, I think if Fal were in our world, he’d be some kind of west asian/native american mix.  Cheekbones for days.

2. Did you design them with any other characters/OCs from their universe in mind?

Nope!  Because I didn’t know jack squat about the game until I started playing.

3. How did you choose their name?

I just cherry-picked two names from old english literature and smashed them together.  Falerin in the name of a minor villain in Arthurian legend, and Arcite was a knight in one of the stories told in The Canterbury Tales. I didn’t realize I’d misspelled it until I was a few weeks into playing.  Oops?

4. In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?

Miqo’te culture and society. I really didn’t want to play a catboy, but I was really fascinated by their naming conventions and their identity as a hunting people.  I still would LOVE more info on the Seeker tribes especially. The fact that all 26 tribes have an individual animal totem really has me curious how they would differ culturally. Although I do still think the rigid gender politics among both clans are kinda gross.

5. Is there any significance behind their hair color?

…Not really.  Glossy black hair is pretty with dark skin?

6. Is there any significance behind their eye color?

Dark blue is one of my favorite colors and I thought it’d be quite striking with Fal’s dark skin and angular features. Oh man a brown person with blue eyes someone call a National Geographic photographer.

7. Is there any significance behind their height?

Originally I just wanted to go on the tall end of average midlander height but didn’t want to seem insecure by setting the height bar at max lolololol.  However, once I decided he had some Elezen heritage, it seemed appropriate to make him a few inches taller, so I went with 5'11.  Just don’t tell anyone that his in-game model is still only 5'8, shhhh.

8.What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?

…I really can’t think of anything.

9.Are they based off of you, in some way?

I was actually trying to make him as little like me as possible while still being someone I could enjoy playing.  He still ended up with some of my loneliness and insecurity as well as my love of songs with devastatingly sad lyrics and desire to make my prose a bit too flowery.

10.If they have an LI, how much of their character is tailored to be compatible to that person?

He doesn’t currently have an LI.  As for The Big One that I always bring up; as I went through the MSQ I noticed one of the NPCs was sort of his “type.”  So I borrowed some elements of that  NPC to make an OC (the old flame I‘ve mentioned before…) Then that OC ended up having nothing in common with the original NPC save a couple of physical features.  He’s had two others than I’ve bothered to flesh out, one I made a little too compatible (a hedonistic Keeper girl who got bored with him because they were so similar) and one was not compatible at all (a Seeker merchant who was too old and grounded for him.) I’d actually like to see him end up with a LI that was played by someone else, but romance is usually low on my RP priority list, and I like it to develop organically if it does happen.  

11. Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?

I had a feeling he wasn’t straight…

12. What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?

Keeping his narrative voice consistent, and writing about the kinds of things that he would prioritize in personal narratives. I know its unrealistic for him to be as eloquent and well-spoken as he is, being raised by a woman from a nomadic tribal culture and not having access to many books, but I can’t help it.  I also know he should be a lot less shy when it comes to matters of sex and love, but I’m just terrible at writing about those.

13.How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?

Not… at… all? I’m not even sure how Fal would have reacted to the whole arc of HW, and now SB.  He’s not a WoL, so I imagine he’s absent from the frontlines of world events.  

14. If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?

1. He might despair at first, but he always finds his way to the silver lining. 2. He’s not afraid of anything or anyone when it comes to social situations.

18. What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?

He lived with the refugees in Little Ala Mhigo for a time after his mother’s tribe cast him out on the outskirts of Wellwick Wood (!!!)

19. What is your favorite fact about your OC?

The whole reason his backstory developed the way it did is because of a dream I had the night I started the game.  I saw Fal standing in one of the roads in the shroud, readying his bow and backed by a swarm of glowing red bees that seemed to be under his command.  So, I gave him a cute little bee spirit friend with the intention of it being totally useless and inconsequential.  Then I switched from BRD to SMN and started absorbing more in-game lore, and thought “what if the bee were like an -egi, only not an egi but some kind of spirit that fused its energy with his?” and now I have all these ideas in my head that I haven’t written down and that only make sense to me.

Dear followers and meta fans!

Today, we present you the first segment of a series of interviews that will feature the brains and minds behind all those wonderful analyses floating around The 100’s tumblr tag.

For our first interview, we are pleased to welcome Elizabeth, also known as the lovely @hawthornewhisperer!

We connected with Elizabeth back in May, before Season 4, Episode 12. So this a little bit of a blast from the past. Read to see how right-- and wrong-- we were about some speculating. 

We’d like to thank Elizabeth again for her time, and the supporters of the Meta Library who encouraged us. Keep an eye out for the next interview!

The 100 Meta Library (bellamysfern):    The first questions are just about some background info. Anything you feel comfortable releasing to the internet. Who are you, what do you do, how does that affect how you write meta (if it has any effect at all), and your level of fandom experience.

Hawthornewhisperer: Okay, well, first of all, thanks for interviewing me! This is an honor and I appreciate you guys doing this.

You can call me Elizabeth, and I'm a writer-slash-historian living in Minnesota. I teach college courses on European history and write romance novels on the side (second one should be out this year!)

In terms of how that influences my meta, I've found that both of my jobs dovetail very well into analyzing the show.  

As a historian, my main lenses of analysis are gender and imperialism so I tend to apply those to the show as well-- in what ways do characters fulfill our expectations of femininity/masculinity, and in what ways do they challenge it? What does that tell us about the characters?  

My imperialist/colonialist focus also helps me sort out what the writers are saying (either intentionally or unintentionally) with regards to hegemonic cultures, etc.

As a writer, I try to think about the choices the writers room is making and what that tells us about the story

Oh, and fandom experience-- I wrote fic for The Hunger Games (Gale/Madge, mostly) but The 100 is probably the first fandom I've been very active in.  But my first true fandom is probably Star Wars.

BF: That's absolutely amazing. I feel like anything with fandom can be trivialized, but so much work goes into writing meta and thinking about the choices made on the show.

HW: Yes, definitely!  

I have very strong feelings about the importance of fandom, particularly transformative fandom (fics, headcanons, etc) as a primarily female space and how important that is to protect and take seriously.

BF: Right. And I know you write fanfic too (very good fanfic, btw).

Do you think writing meta influences how you think about fanfiction? They are two different ways of interacting with a show, but both require authors to really understand the material.

HW: Oh yeah, definitely!  

I see fic and meta as two sides of the same coin-- writing meta

helps me understand characters better, because if I can explain why Bellamy or Clarke would make a particular choice in a particular episode that helps me craft their characters in fics in a way that feels true (or I hope so, at any rate.)

And writing fic helps with meta, because I have a little insight into how writers make decisions.  In particular it makes me slightly more sympathetic to plot twists that seem to have no clear resolution because I frequently write ficlets with cliffhangers and then have *no idea* where it's going after that, because sometimes I just like to raise the stakes for myself.  Of course, there's a major difference in that my fics are only limited by my imagination and can go in any direction I choose, whereas the show has actor contracts, studio pressure, budgets, filming limitations, and a dozen writers working on one story, and they’re getting paid to do this so they should be really be better at it than me.

BF: Is there anything you've ever read (fic or meta) that surprised you? Any interpretation or theory that influenced the way you thought about the show?

HW: You know, most of my favorite metas and theories come from the Meta Station podcast, and I wouldn't say it's *surprising* but I do think my favorite theory this season is probably Erin's suggestion that Bellamy will be key to brokering peace between all the clans.  (I think we got the start of it in the most recent episode, actually, with his faith in Octavia).  It wasn't a direction I'd initially considered for his character, but it fits very well with the story they've been telling thus far this season and I hope we see it come to fruition.

In terms of influence, one thing I really enjoy about fandom is how *collective* it all is-- lots of people come up with complementary ideas that fit together and overlap in really intriguing ways, which makes narrowing down influence kind of difficult.  But on a personal level, I do toss ideas back and forth with @reblogginhood a lot, which probably shows in my writing.

BF: Haha, my fill of meta usually comes from Meta Station too. I just listened to the segment talking about fic and fandom with Chash and thought "Wow, this is great interview prep".

HW: I can't wait to listen to that!  Those are three of my favorite fandom people, talking about my favorite topics, so I'm excited.

BF: I know, I was so excited when I saw the announcement. It was super cute and funny. Anyway, back on topic.

So for you, meta is a more collective thing. Do you have a writing process and need to go through the same steps every time, or does it vary?

HW: It varies, for sure.  Sometimes I realize something and can just throw it all together very quickly, and sometimes my idea is very vague and I have to write and write and write (and talk it over with people) before I really figure out what I'm saying.  But after writing a dissertation I'm pretty used to writing six different versions of the same idea before I feel like I've found it.  I just edit those metas very heavily as no one needs to read four false starts. 😉

BF: So the amount of time it takes to write metas varies too.

Are there any characters/themes that come easier than others?

HW: Oh definitely.  

Bellamy is probably the easiest for me to understand, followed by Clarke. There are other characters that just don't *speak* to me/I have less interest in writing meta on, but that doesn't mean I dislike them.  

Roan, for instance-- he's probably my favorite minor character in the whole show but I don't have too much desire to get into his headspace for some reason.

The-100-Meta-Library (parapluiepliant): We could have had it all. Still in denial about Roan by the way.

HW: I'll always be in denial about Roan, but he will live eternal, shiny, and chrome in all of my fics so at least we have that.

PP: Yippieh! Something to look forward to!

BF: I am still in real actual denial because I thought I saw something about Zach coming back for season five.

HW: I would totally be fine with time travel becoming a thing on the show if it meant someone could go back in time and save Roan.

PP: Talking about time travel: let's go back in time.

I just scrolled a bit through your The 100 meta tag and came upon "Bellamy Blake, Clarke Griffin, and The Iliad". It was one of your first metas, or am I wrong? 

Even though that referred to season 3, would you say that some of it still holds true for season 4?

HW: It probably wasn't my first meta, just the first one I bothered tagging-- I'm terrible about that, and I apologize to everyone for my poor organizational skills.

BF: I'm right there with you with the tagging.

HW: You know, I'm not sure it does hold true for season 4?  The core of the Iliad is hubris, rage, and war between nations being manipulated by the gods, and that doesn't seem to be the story they're telling in season 4.

I will say, in retrospect I do think both Clarke and Bellamy were the Achilles in season 3 -- Clarke for separating herself from the fight, and Bellamy because it was his anger over Mount Weather 2.0 that incited a lot of the conflict.

(But I also doubt they were doing a straight parallel, so take that for what it's worth)

PP: Okay. Just a thought. I am not that familiar with the Grounders (and to the Arkadians to some extent) might still be an entertaining thought.

HW: Ooooh yes, that would work very well, especially since I suspect conflict between Becca and Cadogan is at the root of a lot of problems the societies are facing.

BF: I did find it interesting that the brought the Iliad in so explicitly. And there was a lot of speculation based on it, when maybe so much worth shouldn't have been placed on the Iliad/Odyssey.

But we won't know until the end, I guess.

HW: Yeah, it's tough to know what is meaningful and important and what's just a fun, throwaway moment until you've got a complete narrative to examine.  But I do enjoy how fandom can take something like "Bellamy gets a present that probably just means he's a Big Ol' Nerd" and turn it into a coherent, unifying gloss on the season.

PP: One of the most entertaining and enlightening things in the fandom for me.

HW: Yeah, me too.  

Fandom is such an enriching experience in so many ways.

PP: Another question in that regard: Is there a meta of yours of which you are most proud of? Or which you thought of as the most fun to read/the most clarifying in regard to certain aspects?

HW: I think the one I'm proudest of would be the one I wrote about Bellamy undercutting the Alpha Male trope, because I find "how we perform and understand gender" to be a really interesting topic, and I think Bellamy as a character really complicates our understanding of what it means to be an alpha male.  

And I think some of that is directly intended by the writers, but I also think some of it comes from the performances (Bob in particular, but also Ian, Eliza, and Mike Beach because he's not just reading what's on the page, he's reacting to their performances as well.)

It makes Bellamy into a really interesting and nuanced character in a way that draws me in.

PP: Absolutely! One of the reasons I love him so much.

BF: Do you have a lot of interaction with your meta? Do people mostly reblog or like it, or do you get some conversations going?

HW: I think mostly people just like and reblog posts, but every so often someone will add something to my meta that I hadn't considered/seen before and it'll just blow my mind. I love it when that happens.

And sometimes people send PMs to respond and I end up having long, in depth conversations about characters with people I've never met before, and I *also* love that. I've made some really great friends that way.

BF: Fandom friendships are so interesting that way.

HW: Yeah, definitely.  

I really treasure the friendships I've made in fandom, and I know they'll outlast the show itself, which is wonderful.

BF: Yeah, definitely contradicts everything people told you about everyone on the internet being dangerous. But I haven't met an axe murderer yet.

HW: Haha right?  *fingers crossed*

PP: Who says that I am not one?

HW: Oh no! Haha!

BF: You are on the other side of the ocean. I think I'm good. Well, that was all questioning that I had. Laura?

PP: I would have one last question.

Can we hope for another meta pretty soon and if so, can you already tease it a bit?

HW: You know, there's nothing that I'm currently writing, I think because most of the stuff I'm interested in from 411 (the Bellarke fallout) seems to be on hold until 412, but I also tend to work best in response to prompts/questions.

So is there something you'd like me to talk about/you're interested in discussing?

BF: What’s your Becca/Cadogan speculation?

HW: Oooh, good one!  

I think Cadogan's messed up childhood (Jaha mentioned an abusive father) is going to resurface, and I suspect it was a conflict between him and Becca that set things into motion. I have my fingers crossed for a flashback!

PP: Definitely. Oh, I missed that with Jaha because my stream didn't work properly. I really need to watch it so I can catch up!

HW: The Jaha-Cadogan mention was just a throwaway line, however, so I might be putting too much weight on it. And as for the Bellarke fallout, I do think Clarke holding a gun on him and then being unable to pull the trigger, even though she truly believed the human race might die if she didn't pull it, is going to carry a lot of weight in their relationship.

Clarke has consistently been shown as willing to put her own wants and needs and loves aside in order to save people, and this is one of the first times we see her make a heart choice instead of a head choice, if that makes sense.

But Clarke's decision to not shoot Bellamy was really big, and while I'm disappointed we didn't get the fallout immediately, I think 411 was a really busy episode and I have hopes that it will be addressed in some respect in 412.

BF: Thanks so much for taking so much time to talk to us!

GEORGE HW BUSH FAMILY TREE: Who are the children, grandchildren of the political dynasty

When George HW Bush and Barbara Bush met while she was still in high school, they had no way of knowing that their romance would one day become a political dynasty.

The Bushes, who hold the record as the longest married presidential couple, stayed together as George was elected to Congress, spent time in China as U.S. ambassador, headed up the CIA, became vice president and finally president, and for many, many years after.

Along the journey, they had six children and 17 grandchildren (including three step-grandchildren), some of whom also went into politics: former President George W. Two of his grandchildren, Ashley Bush and Marshall Bush, remembered the 41st president on Good Morning America on Monday.

"He was very grounded and certainly made us all feel very loved and made us feel very special," Ashley said.

George W. Bush (son) Born: He was born in 1946. Spouse: He married Laura Welch, a former teacher and librarian from Midland, Texas, in 1977. Children: They have twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna, born in 1981. Career: He was elected governor of Texas in 1994 and U.S. president in 2000, serving two terms in the White House. He also is a former managing general partner of Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers.

Pauline Robinson "Robin" Bush (daughter)

Born in December 1949, she died Oct. 11, 1953, of leukemia. She is buried in College Station, Texas, on the grounds of the Bush Presidential Library at Texas A&M University.

John Ellis "Jeb" Bush (son)

Born: He was born in 1953. Spouse: He married Columba Gallo in 1974. Children: They have three children, George Prescott, Noelle and John, also known as Jebbie. Career: He is a former developer and investment banker, Florida commerce secretary and governor of Florida.

Neil Bush (son)

Born: He was born in 1955. Spouse: He married Sharon Smith in 1980 and they divorced in 2003. In 2004, he married Maria Manass. Children: Neil and Sharon have three children: Lauren, Pierce and Ashley. Career: Neil is a founder of Ignite! Learning, an educational software company, and is board chairman of Points of Light, a public service nonprofit. Points of Light identifies him as president of ATX Oil and manager of Luoil, a project company.

Marvin Bush (son)

Born: He was born in 1956. Spouse: He married Margaret Conway Molster in 1981. Children: They had two children, daughter Marshall and son Charles Walker. Career: He is co-founder and a managing partner of Winston Partners, a Virginia-based investment firm, and principal at the George W. Bush Presidential Library.

Dorothy ("Doro") Bush Koch (daughter)

Born: She was born in 1959. Spouse: She married William LeBlond in 1982. She and LeBlond divorced in 1990, and she married Robert "Bobby" Koch in 1992. Children: Doro and William have two children, Samuel and Nancy Ellis, known as "Ellie." Doro and Bobby have two children, Gigi and Robert. Career: She is a board member of the Washington-based National Rehabilitation Hospital, where she once worked, and serves on the board of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

GEORGE HW BUSH FAMILY TREE: Who are the children, grandchildren of the political dynasty

When George HW Bush and Barbara Bush met while she was still in high school, they had no way of knowing that their romance would one day become a political dynasty.

The Bushes, who hold the record as the longest married presidential couple, stayed together as George was elected to Congress, spent time in China as U.S. ambassador, headed up the CIA, became vice president and finally president, and for many, many years after.

Along the journey, they had six children and 17 grandchildren (including three step-grandchildren), some of whom also went into politics: former President George W. Bush, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush.
