SOMEWHERE ONLY WE KNOW — act I, scene v
nonidol!hwang intak x f!reader
when summit poster boy hwang intak's car breaks down in the school parking lot, it sets off a chain of events that leads to you, someone he was perhaps always meant to find. the only problem is that the two of you are far from the ideal couple, and your peers are apt to keep that status quo.

a/n: whenever i come back to this series, i remember how hard it is to write it
SUMMER (RISING SENIORS).
Yn had not sent a picture back to Intak. In fact, she hadn't even opened his messages. Intak couldn't decide which was worse—being left on "read" or on "delivered." Both were equally quite horrible, but as the day went on with radio silence from her end, he continuously had to remind himself that she had responsibilities and a life. She couldn't be at his beck and call, and she certainly wouldn't ever entertain the idea of being so.
But one little text would have eased his mind. Just one, little text.
Intak flopped onto the couch in the living room of his house, the entirety of which remained just as cold and empty as it always was. In a way, the quiet was good because it meant that his father wasn't home, taking with him that thick, haunting presence of his. Intak sometimes imagined that he walked around with a massive cloud of fog clinging to his legs and feet, and that image had engraved itself into his head since he was an adolescent, more so now that his father's murky fog would soon consume Intak in all of those heavy expectations.
He lifted his phone up to catch a glimpse of the time. He would have to leave for that one dance class soon, the one that he and his friends had signed up for together to occupy themselves during the summer. If Intak wasn't forced to take over the company after his schooling, he would be dancing, or maybe even reading shit, like proper literature, and writing poetry about dead older brothers and forbidden friendships with strangers who felt closer to him than his own family.
He was tempted to text Yn just to check in. Something like 'hey bff i'm bored as hell and sad as fuck hbu' or 'miss u and worried about u text me back?' or god forbid, 'i've been trying to imagine what u look like but i have a feeling a picture won't do u justice.' God, he really needed to stop watching those cursed romcoms when he was bor—
Bzzzzz. Bzzz. Bzzzz.
Intak leapt out of his skin in surprise.
He reached into his pants pocket to withdraw Jaehyuk's phone. The notifications from Yn came in rapid succession at the top of the screen:
yer a wizard yn!: sorry i went mia for like a day
yer a wizard yn!: smth came up
yer a wizard yn!: cute pic btw :') ig i owe u a pfp too
yer a wizard yn!: *sent a photo*
Intak held his breath, then forced himself to turn away from the phone screen. Was he ready for this? Was he ready for her reveal? This felt like an invasion of privacy, especially with how carefully she kept her identity hidden the first few weeks they'd been texting each other. It hadn't been until recently that Yn had begun to let him learn things about her.
It wasn't like he forced her though… right? It was out of her own want and will. It was her choice and he—
He was going to fully indulge in that.
Intak finally opened up the full chat to view the messages she'd sent.
And lo and behold, there she was. It was a casual selfie, seeming to be taken in front of a window by the way the sun shone over her face in a gold-colored glow. She wore a dark T-shirt with a logo Intak couldn’t quite make out from the way her arms and hair were positioned. In fact, he could only see about half of her face from the way she hid the lower half behind her pulled-up knees. But her eyes crinkled enough that he could see that she was smiling.
The soft smile on his face was a stark contrast to the sharp palpitations of his heart in his chest. Before, he could never imagine the face he was speaking to across the phone—rather, it had always just been a person with blurred features. Now that he could put a face to the name, and the voice, and the character…
Intak saved the picture and set it as Yn’s contact photo. He wondered if he should have even been doing this since Jae didn’t even have a contact photo saved for her. (But now that she had sent it, it wasn’t like Intak was going to resist setting that photo as her contact, especially since it was an excuse to stare at it while he was texting her.)
jae’s phone: that photo is not fair that’s like… half ur face dude >://// /j
jae’s phone: but thank uuuuuuu i KNEW u were cute
He chewed on his bottom lip, quickly adding onto his previous texts since it seemed like Yn wasn’t going to reply back any time soon.
jae’s phone: ik ur the one who suggested swapping photos, but i hope u didn’t feel obligated to. ik u were never super comfortable w sharing personal info abt urself w me, but i’m genuinely really happy to get to know u better
jae’s phone: lol idk y that got kinda sappy ? but i hope everything’s good on ur end!!
jae’s phone: i’ve gotta go to a dance lesson rn tho so ttyl ynieee!!!!
Intak sighed as he forced himself to click out of his and Yn’s direct messages, and to haul his ass off the couch. He had, at multiple instances, contemplated why he felt so attached to Yn. Perhaps it was because she was so close to his brother and this truly was just his own kind of closure. Or it was something else, too.
Yn's eyes burned holes through the notifications that sat at the top of her phone screen. It had been several hours since Intak had sent them, and she knew exactly what they said. She'd even mentally written out and sent several replies, but never physically carried them out. She just couldn't bring herself to do it.
The heavy weight that had settled on her chest from a day ago still rested there. Usually, privileged shit Summit kids did to her and in front of her were annoying, but she'd learned to grow thick skin. She didn't know why this time affected her so poorly. Then again, the fact that neither Jongseob nor Shota had gotten over it could have contributed to her own mood, too.
Her brothers in arms had been quiet since then, barely speaking unless necessity prevailed. The shop had never been so quiet before, and even when customers and neighbors came by with a friendly word or joke, they would force a smile onto their faces or a laugh from their throats. She could hear the strain, the grudge and emotions tugging at the corners of their mouths.
"If I had the money…" Yn remembered hearing Jongseob muttering under his breath the night of the incident. She knew exactly what he was thinking then and there. All the bitterness in the negative space.
They'd all grown to have thick skin, but it was bound to crack at some point. They weren't made of steel, after all.
After a long, grueling day at the shop, Yn, Shota, and Jongseob returned to Yn's house to wash up for the evening. The walk home had been quiet, and she'd been itching to reach for her phone and finally open up Intak's messages…
She cleared her throat. "Go get cleaned up and meet me in the living room," she voiced aloud to the two of them as she unlocked the front door.
Jongseob grunted, "Why?"
"We're watching Clueless."
Shota let out a snort as Jongseob threw his head back in a loud groan. "You're shitting me. Any other movie than that one, Yn. We've watched that, like, fifteen times."
With her back still to them, she could let herself smile just a little. All she had been looking for was that reaction from him. "Okay, well, if you can be on the couch in fifteen minutes, then you can choose a different—"
She hadn't even finished what she was saying when the two of them bolted past her, exclaiming at each other as they raced for access to the closest bathroom. Yn laughed under her breath, nudging the door closed behind her with the toe of her shoe. She hadn't even been sure whether or not the two would stay here with her or not since they basically stayed shut up in the old extra bedroom instead of hanging out. Though they would have been in the house, it had sounded like no one else was home.
But now? Yn made her way into the kitchen to get dinner started. Hopefully she could get something on the stove by the time one of them hopped out of the shower. Knowing Jongseob though…
She estimated that it was about five minutes later that Jongseob's elephant stomps sounded down the hall, nearing the living room and kitchen at high speed. Seconds later, a blur of orange and white launched himself over the back of the couch. As she expected, it was Jongseob with that freshly showered glow, damp hair, and a white towel hanging around his shoulders.
Her amused gaze clashed with his, and though his face was pressed into a deadpan, she saw the glimmer in his irises. He told her, "We're watching Star Wars."
Yn grinned. "Deal's a deal, kid."
Right on cue, Shota came sliding into the living room with his dampened locks tied up and out of his face with a Hello Kitty hair tie he no doubt found in the drawers of the bathroom. She wondered how he found stuff like that, stuff that she had ditched so long ago when she was much younger. She raised her eyebrows at him. “I’m starting to think that neither of you actually use soap when you shower.”
“I’m productive when I’m given motive,” Shota replied, collapsing onto the couch next to Jongseob. She could already hear the tell-tale explosion of sound that was the Star Wars main theme.
It was several hours later when dinner was eaten, dishes were washed, and the lot of them were one and a half Star Wars movies in that Yn stared at her notifications again. Intak hadn't sent anything else since those last messages, and there was a distinct feeling of guilt stewing in the back of her brain. At this point, it overpowered any feelings of annoyance or bitterness from the other day's incident. It was always at evening hours when the overthinking started.
Intak had been good to her thus far, though, and it wasn't fair that she took out her annoyance on him. He had done nothing bad—a part of her countered with “yet.”
She could see the start of his messages: That photo's like half your face dude… I've got to go to a dance lesson though so…
It was all completely harmless, and yet, her heart pounded in her chest from not being able to fully read his reaction to her face reveal. Of course she cared what he thought. She chalked it up to the fact that Intak himself was a pretty face, and it was perfectly normal to be self conscious.
Yn raised her head for a moment when she caught a flash of quick movement from the TV, then felt a pair of eyes on her.
While Shota was curled up at the far end of the couch, Jongseob was seated next to her and saw who's messages sat at the top of her screen. The two of them connected gazes; he said nothing, showed nothing.
A different type of guilt rushed into her head.
Jongseob turned back to the screen, and she was back to square one.
The house was quiet by the time Yn tucked her friends beneath quilts on the couch. Her mom had come home sometime between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace, then crashed immediately after disappearing into her room, leaving Yn to haunt the hallways of her house in the dark and silence by herself.
She perched on the edge of her bed with the light of her phone screen illuminating her face. There were those unread messages at the top of her screen again, yelling at her to just take a peak. There was no harm in seeing what he said—but there was. He would see the Read sign beneath his messages and think the worst.
With nothing else stopping her but her own thoughts, she tapped the notification.
The text chain opened up before her in full. There was nothing out of the ordinary, as she expected. He was just being his bright, sweet self here. Her lips pursed into a slight smile as she read over his sappy talk at the end; it was appreciated though.
But now it was a matter of replying.
He probably thought she was busy all day again, but the guilt of “punishing” him for something that people from his community did and not him personally was eating her up inside.
“Ahem.”
She stopped, eyes widening as her head shot up like a kid caught with her hand in the cookie jar. A drowsy Jongseob stood in her doorway with his eyes at half-mast and his mouth widened in a yawn. Sometimes she forgot that her friend was still a kid—that they were all just kids. “Hey,” she whispered to him. “Did I wake you up or something?”
He shook his head and suddenly looked a lot more awake. “The text messages you got earlier,” he drawled, inclining his chin at her phone.
“Oh.” She glanced down at the screen, then back up at him. “Seob, I—”
“He's gonna hurt you, Yn.”
Her chest felt so hollow all of a sudden. What?
He folded his arms in front of himself, cupping his palms under his elbows. Jongseob's eyebrows furrowed together as if in thought or in an attempt to look firm. “He's gonna hurt you like Jae did.”
No, the hollow feeling was because her heart fell into the pit of her stomach. Everything felt like it was falling out from under her with that statement. Yn said slowly, gently, “Jongseob, Jae didn't mean to hurt us. He didn't mean to get sick. He couldn't control it, Seob. You know that that's not fair.”
Sometimes it was hard to not let the anger seep through into blame and misunderstanding. That was just the grief talking. When those thoughts resurfaced, it was just as difficult to deal with the resulting guilt of ever blaming them later on.
Losing someone was just devastating.
Jongseob sniffled though, and she backtracked on her previous thought. But this wasn't that, was it? “Yeah, well—it seems whether they do it on purpose or not, that's all they do up there: hurt people.”
Her mouth felt so dry then, so helplessly wordless. Her throat was just as voiceless. These kids—her friends—had gone through all that pain just as she had. She couldn't blame them most of the time because she knew where they were coming from.
Jongseob poked his tongue in his cheek. “I know you miss him.”
Yn's fingers curled around the edges of her phone, like she could hold onto whoever was on the other side.
“I miss him, too,” he said.
A stinging sensation erupted in the corners of her eyes and she reached up to staunch the tears like they were cuts, and they were bleeding.
“But no matter their intention, a ghost can only haunt,” he muttered. He let that thought simmer for a second before citing his source, “Got that one off of Pinterest.”
The last comment made a laugh sputter out of her mouth, wet but touched. She sniffled at the same time he did. “I was gonna say,” she said, her voice watery, “when'd you get so smart?”
“I've always been smart,” he scoffed. He exhaled, still lingering on the threshold before waddling over to where she was perched on the bed. Awkwardly, he brought his arms around her upper body and gently patted her back. “Is this helping?”
Yn wrapped her arms around him to reciprocate. “Yeah.”
“Thank god.”
A ghost can only haunt. Maybe it was how fast it had all happened that none of them really got proper closure or got to say goodbye. They would never get a chance to see him ever again, to tell him they felt something for him close to love, and enjoyed his company despite his being from the Summit. There was no chance they'd be invited to the funeral, and there was little possibility of ever visiting his grave. There were only memories and a phone number.
One day he was here, and the next… well the next, Yn was texting Intak. Was this history repeating itself, or would this ending turn into a new beginning entirely?
When they both pulled back from their embrace, Jongseob poked her cheek. “You know I never know what to do when you cry, right?”
She reached up to swipe her palm across her dampened cheeks. “Yeah. You did good, kid.”
That made the corners of his mouth curl up a bit. “I just don't want this guy to be another reason you cry.”

(TAK-GING)⠀INTAK HWANG.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “ACE!RACER BOYFRIEND HEADCANONS.”
†⠀warnings y disclaimers — fem!reader. streetracer!au. fluff. smut. no plot. sex fiend!intak. pussy whipped. overstimulation. crying. overprotective!intak. jealous!intak. voyeurism.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who is always all over you 24/7, no matter what you’re doing. you could be tuning your next track car and he’d be right there behind you; slapping your ass (consensually) before pushing up on you to ask what you’re doing even though it’s evident.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀that can’t help but stare at you all through out your event-filled night. you could simply be sitting right beside him against his car, or out on the floor dancing with the girls, and his eyes would be solely locked on you. he didn’t care if it was obvious, that was the least of his problems.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀is the type of boyfriend to let you show him how to properly change a car part under the hood, even though he was the one who taught you how when you first started dating. it totally wasn’t so he could look at your ass while you bent over his front end. yes the fuck it was.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀that man loved everything about you. from the way you styled your hair, to how you towered over him both on the streets and in bed. every chance he got her kiss you from head to toe, even if it embarrassed you. he just liked seeing you get antsy about it.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who takes his ace/top racer position very seriously, he’d switch from the puppy love boyfriend he was to a cold hearted speedster on the tracks. he made sure he never raced you because he’d be damned if he let you see that side of him.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who was introduced to you by your best friend stephen yoon. there’s not a day that goes by where intak is annoying the shit out of stephen by thanking him for getting you two together. at first steph didn’t mind and quite frankly he thought it was cute, but now he wants to just rip intak’s head off any time he mentions it.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀that spoils you rotten with the money he gains from races. you saw a new kate spade you like? he bought you the entire collection. there’s a new jordan coming out soon? he already has it in your collection in the closet.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who knows his status in the racing world. he’s very aware of his popularity, but he doesn’t let it get to his head. he flaunts you in all your glory in front of everyone, making sure they all knew who he belonged to.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who begs you to ride him whenever you two are intimate, loving how you get against him in all the ways. it could be in the comfort of your own bedroom, or in his car, he didn’t care. and, if he didn’t, you didn’t.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀that’s left an utter and crying mess whenever you tease and edge him for almost an hour. his body twitches every few seconds, especially when the base of your thumb slides between his tip, cries of ecstasy falling from his lips. all you simply do is grab his cheeks to make sure he continues to look at you, even through his teary-eyed state; water stains tinting his cheeks.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀that begs to fuck you all throughout the night yet the minute you do, he’s a crying and begging mess asking you to let him cum for the fifth time. you do, but not without making fun of his vulnerability.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who you laugh at when he tries acting hard in front of his friends, whispering into his ear all the things you did to him the night before. the redness that shades his face afterwards is picture perfect, you and the rest of his friends laughing at him.
ACE!RACER INTAK⠀♱⠀who gets irritated whenever his teammates are all over you. they mean no harm and he should know that, but the way he dicks you down when you get home later says otherwise.

POV Intak fought your Ex
CW: cursing
“What the fu..” you slowly breathed out as he fall down on your couch. “INTAK!” you quicken your steps to the exhausted man and grab hold of his head to keep him balanced.
“ Intak, what happened ? I’m going to call the police” you walk away to grab your phone but was stopped when Intak grabbed your wrist. “ Do you want me to go to jail ?” Intak said jokingly.
“What are you talking about ?” You sat down looking carefully at the bruises on his face. “ I got into a fight and threw the first punch. I’m pretty much at fault so if you call the police, I could go to jail.” Intak let out a long breath and looked down in shame.
You moved away from Intak, and he buried his head in his hands, disappointed. The poor man was in the brink of tears when he saw you go, but he was instantly relieved when he saw you return with a first aid box, ready to clean him up. “Tell me everything”
“Long story short, it was Jay. I ran into him when walking to the store and he just wouldn’t keep his dumbass mouth shut” Intak said in frustration while you clean the dirt around his eye. “He was trying to act cool at first but then started talking crazy about you. I started seeing red and the next thing I know his friends was pulling me off and pushing him to walk away.”
You move on to clean the blood on his eyebrow, not caring how rough you were starting to be. “OUCH, babe that hurts” Intak Whined
“That’s what you get for being so stupid. Like come on! “I saw red”, that’s a weak excuse and it could have gotten worse when his friends came.”
Intak look up at you like a wounded puppy. “..I know and I’m sorry. I.. I promise not to do it again.” Moving on to the scar in his lips, you cleaned up the blood and gave him a quick kiss.
“I forgive you. Thank you for sticking up for me” you pull Intak into a tight grasp, snuggling up to him. “Ouch babe that hurts”
“ Ohh so you can let another man punch you, but I can’t hold you?”
“Fine, you’re right.” You both chuckled and went inside the room to finish the night in each other's arms.

ANOTHER CHAPTER . . . 황인탁 !
PAIRING. non idol! intak x gn reader GENRE. fluff, high school au, established relationship au WARNINGS. use of petnames (love) WORD COUNT. 1.1k words
𓂋˚˖ A/N. wrote this a few hours before and after my own graduation lmao i found out intak also graduated a few months ago so i just had to do this one
“I NOW DECLARE YOU, GRADUATES!”
You grabbed the tassel hanging loosely right beside your face and moved it to the left side of your cap. The entire hall was then filled with roaring applause, an acknowledgement of all the hard work you've put into the past few years of high school.
You looked to your right, and within the small space between two other graduating students, you saw that your parents were already smiling and waving towards you. A taller figure standing beside them moved a little closer to them so that they were also in your line of sight.
Your boyfriend Intak had finally arrived to see you graduate, and you were more than ecstatic to see his proud smile.
Once the ceremony ended and all the students and guests had exited the venue, it was time for the photo ops.
On one side, a group of hired photographers were taking the mandatory family pictures at a booth that had previously been set up. Others were either taking pictures with the DSLR cameras their fathers brought with them or with their own cellphones. Those walking around were probably frantically looking for their friends to take pictures with.
After you had your pictures taken with your parents, you asked them to wait for you in their car so that they wouldn't tire themselves out waiting. You then made sure you took photos of you and your friends, holding on to your resolve of not leaving until your camera roll was full of people who got you through the past years of a hell ride and the people you also love. Of course, that included Intak, who also happily volunteered to be your photographer for the day.
All goodbyes and photos said and done, only a couple of people were left in the lobby; you and Intak included.
“Sooo, how does being an alumni feel?” He teased as you both take a seat on the bench just outside the school gates where he used to wait for you.
You sighed in response, relishing in the post-graduation rush. “Honestly, I refuse to believe this is all real. It all feels too .. sudden. Like two weeks ago, I was cramming for exams with everyone else, and now you’re saying I won’t be able to see them again in uniform tomorrow? I know I’ll still see them when we hang out, but things will just be a little different, you know?” Again, you sigh, but this time in slight frustration. You then looked up into his eyes that were apparently already looking at you the entire time. You took one of his hands before you continue. “But really, I’m just glad you’re here. You’re kinda like a reminder that things don’t really have to change,”
“Of course, I’d be here. I wouldn’t miss it for the world—not when I’ve seen how much work you’ve put into that shiny medal of yours,” He noted, pointing towards the somewhat-heavy object hanging around your neck.
“And yet, I missed your graduation,” You pouted, and Intak had to physically stop himself from pinching your cheeks and kissing you right then and there.
“But I didn’t even get to attend it myself, so you really didn’t miss anything,” With the hand that you had been holding, he started rubbing the back of yours gently.
“Still. I think it’s an essential high school experience,”
“If you’re that upset about me missing my own grad, then that’s all I really need,” He giggled, and that familiar warm smile appeared once again. You had seen it a gazillion times before, but it never failed to make you feel all fuzzy and cozy inside.
Then, an idea suddenly crossed your mind, and you didn’t hesitate to jump on it. With your hands still joined, you quickly pulled him back inside the hall, and pushed him to stand right in front of the stairs leading to the stage, but not before checking if the place was empty. You placed your diploma in his hands, your medal around his neck, and your cap on his head.
“What are you doing?”
“Watching you graduate!”
You jogged towards the front of the stage as you fished your phone from your purse and started recording. You lightly giggled as you noticed your boyfriend’s confusion even through the screen.
“Hwang Intak! Honor Awardee!”
“But I’m not an honor student,”
“Well you are now!”
Intak chuckled and decided to play along with you. He walked up the stairs and to the center of the stage with grace. However, instead of bowing normally like how the others did earlier, he exaggeratedly bowed like a prince, raising his hand up and placing it on his stomach as he leaned forward and moved his foot backwards.
You giggled at his antics and watched as he left the stage and walked towards you with a slight skip in his step, feeling pride and elation swell across your chest.
“Thank you, love. You really didn't have to do that,” He took your free hand and interlocked his fingers in yours. You sigh as you slowly left the ceremony hall.
“It’s not the same, but–”
“Y/N. You’ve done more than enough,”
“No, but you still deserved the opportunity to go up there and be recognized. It’s just a shame I’m the only person here to witness it,”
“It doesn’t matter if the whole world doesn’t recognize my efforts; as long as you do.”
You lightly punched his arm to cover up your flushed face before you took his hand once again and slowly made your way towards the double doors.
“Congrats, Mr. Hwang!” You both turned in the direction of the voice in shock; you could've sworn everyone had already left. “You too, Y/N. Good luck with college and…”
One of your favorite teachers who was a fresh college graduate and a new teacher at your school pointed teasingly at your intertwined hands. You had told her about Intak a few times after she teased you frequently about how “glowing” you always looked; she was definitely rooting for the both of you in a not-so-subtle way.
“Ah, thank you Ms. Lim! We’ll do our best.” After saying your goodbyes, you pulled Intak towards the door with a slouched back as if you were still trying to hide. He could only let you drag him along as he chuckled at your behavior and how things had turned out.
Graduating from high school only comes once in a lifetime. This definitely wasn’t how he imagined his own graduation would go, but he’s more than content with closing this chapter in your lives and moving on to the next with no one else but you.

THE END OF SOPHOMORE YEAR.
IT was doomed from the beginning.
"Well, I can't just let it die," Hwang Intak squawked, hands buried in his neat nest of effortless brunet curls. He stood before the cherry red Ford Mustang convertible, steam rising from its front hood. He and Choi Jiung gawked at the old piece of junk uselessly and miserably. "This was Jaehyuk hyung's. I can't just…" Let it die with him.
Jiung scratched the back of his head with a wince. "Well, shit, dude. Sorry, but you'll have to call a really good mechanic to come fix it up."
"In the school parking lot?" Intak gestured widely to the grand landscape around them bustling with kids and cars, chatter and laughter. School had just been dismissed and everyone was hustling their way out of the godforsaken grounds of the Crossroads, the middle ground region between the Summit and the Hollows. Dirty glares were shot out from behind shiny pairs of Gucci glasses, ignored by others in hand me down jeans and sneakers falling apart at the canvas seams. Those of the Summit would fall into the Italian leather seats of their Porsches, racing out of the academy parking lot and leaving streak marks and exhaust fumes in their wake; while those of the Hollows would begin their trek down the hill into the valley region. If they were lucky, maybe they'd be able to finesse their old model cars into chugging their way down.
Intak had a different kind of old car. Really, the hunk of metal was more vintage than old. It was something his late older brother Jaehyuk was into, and only Jaehyuk had had the patience to learn how to fix it.
"Where'd he even learn how to fix it?" Jiung asked, turning over his shoulder to send some questionable loiterers a glance that said 'hey bitch, yeah, scat.' (Outright telling them wasn't his style; no one could fault him if they got scared by the look in his eyes. Then again, with the hold his family had over people, no one would ever fault him.)
Intak had resorted to pulling Jaehyuk's old phone out and scouring through his contacts for someone most likely labeled with something related to car mechanics. "I dunno. He said something about a friend of his." He wasn't exactly surprised; some of the people around here liked to focus their time on things that weren't school, and what better to entertain the affluent than shiny, luxury cars?
All hope seemed to be lost until—ping!
Intak startled as his older brother's phone chirped with an incoming message. Jiung had wandered off to go find his friend and cousin Choi Taeyang, so Intak was alone on this. The sun would have made everything much more difficult to see, but luckily, he had managed to score one of the spots under the solar panel roofs.
The message was from someone named "yer a wizard yn!" in Jaehyuk's contacts. How's the convertible doing?
His eyebrows furrowed together as he pondered who Yn could be. It sounded like a… feminine name, but he couldn't be sure. And if his brother knew this person, did they not know that he was dead?
Intak began typing out a message: Hey, this is Jaehyuk's younger brother, Intak. Who is this?
The person had read the message, but the typing dots kept on appearing and disappearing, before reappearing again. Did they think they would even get a response?
When he was just about to give up, the message appeared. Just wanted to check on the car. Jae always asked me to help.
Ah, so this was his brother's mechanic—wait. But they called him Jae, so they had to have been a friend of Jaehyuk's, or at least a close acquaintance. Only his friends called him Jae or Hyuk. Either way, relief soared through Intak's body and he was swift to send his next messages.
jae's phone: the car's not doing great like it won't start
jae's phone: i'm in my school's parking lot and my house is kinda far, so i could hitch a ride back w a friend, but i don't wanna leave it here
jae's phone: did u teach my brother how to maintain this thing?
Intak tapped his foot against the ground. Was that too much? He felt like this Yn person replied in a much more matter-of-fact way and less personable than he would have liked.
yer a wizard yn!: yeah, i did
yer a wizard yn!: i'm sorry
yer a wizard yn!: for ur loss, i mean … he was a really good guy
jae's phone: it's okay, no need for all that
jae's phone: i mean, it was like a year ago so
Intak leaned up against the side of the car to keep from collapsing. Yeah, a year ago. But he was still reminded of that every day, in the people he saw, the places he went, and this damned car. He didn't know why he still held on.
yer a wizard yn!: he talked about u a lot
jae's phone: were u and him close?
He blinked in surprise at the messages being sent at the same time.
jae's phone: all good things i hope lol
yer a wizard yn!: yep a lot of good things, he thought the world of u
yer a wizard yn!: but we should probably get that old thing up and running right? don't want u stuck in the academy parking lot for too long
They totally just ignored his question… huh. That was interesting.
jae's phone: yeah def haha
yer a wizard yn!: can u describe for me what's going on? or pop open the hood and take a picture?
jae's phone: yeah ofc! gimme a sec
Intak scrambled into the driver's side door to pop open the hood of the car. Steam flew out, and he frowned as he waved the heat out of his face to snap a decent picture.
It was a miracle, really, the way they were able to walk him through maintaining the car all through pictures and text messages. He thought they must be one of the expensive car repair shops in the upper east side of the Summit, but he couldn't be too sure. All those assholes wouldn't talk to him like this, especially when they knew he didn't know anything about taking care of a vintage car and still drove it around. This Yn person texted or spoke like his age, but still in a reserved fashion, and they had been close with Jaehyuk.
He wondered if this could be one of his friends who had moved away for university, and that was why they couldn't be here in person to fix it.
About fifteen minutes later, he sat in the driver's side of the car with the engine roaring to life. Intak gasped, his eyes widening and a smile gracing his face. "Holy shit."
He scrambled to send a text. IT WORKED!!! OH MY GOD IT ACTUALLY WORKED.
yer a wizard yn!: yay !! congrats intak :) nice job
jae's phone: all thanks to u! tysm u really r a wizard
yer a wizard yn!: oh haha he kept that contact name?
jae's phone: yeah ig so, but it def fits
yer a wizard yn!: yeah
yer a wizard yn!: listen, if u need any help w the car in the future, just send a text and i'll try my best to help u out from here
jae's phone: if u don't mind me asking…
yer a wizard yn!: i do, actually
yer a wizard yn!: mind — i do mind u asking. i'm sorry, but u can't meet me in person or know who i am. it's just better this way, trust me
Intak's heart sank as he slumped in his seat. He coincidentally glanced up through the front windshield just as Jiung and Taeyang were making their way over to him. Almost half the parking lot was gone by now, the rest waiting in the massive line to get out. The two Choi cousins gestured to the car with grins on their faces and they appeared in Intak's open driver's side window.
"Hey! You got it working!" Jiung exclaimed. "How'd you manage that?"
Intak shrugged. "Just like magic, I guess."
Taeyang snorted with a knowing look in his eyes, a mischievous twinkle Intak knew all too well. "Nuh-uh. I saw you smiling down at your phone on our way over. Bro, who's got you smiling like that?"
As carefully as he could, Intak hid his brother's phone under his leg. "I asked someone and they helped me out, so I was just on Tiktok waiting for you guys."
They seemed to buy it from their shared expressions. "Well," Taeyang said, "we've gotta head back inside for this meeting thing, so we'll just find our own way home. Catch you later though?"
Intak nodded. "Yeah, for sure."
"See ya!" Jiung waved his goodbye as the two of them began walking away from Intak and the car, and back toward the academy.
Once he was sure that they were far enough away, he whipped out the phone from under his leg.
jae's phone: people literally only say that in the movies
jae's phone: i'm sorry that i'm being nosy, i'm just curious and i have a feeling u knew jae really well… idk
jae's phone: ykw sorry, guess i was just excited abt meeting someone that my brother knew
yer a wizard yn!: no, don't apologize, i get it. i really do, intak. if u wanna talk about *him*, i'm all for it, but for just… safety reasons, it's better if u and i remain strangers
jae's phone: what r u in a gang or something
yer a wizard yn!: LOL THAT'S THE FIRST THING U COME UP W??
Intak grinned. What? What else should I be thinking?
yer a wizard yn!: pfft lots of things
jae's phone: okaaay cryptic 🤨
jae's phone: wait what're ur pronouns? can i ask that?
yer a wizard yn!: she/her
jae's phone: ur not his secret ex gf right??
yer a wizard yn!: 🤦♀️
jae's phone: HEEEY WHAT?? 😔😔😔 ITS A VALID QUESTION OKAY
yer a wizard yn!: no, i was not his secret gf lmao just a friend and his on-call mechanic
jae's phone: is that a euphemism
yer a wizard yn!: i am going to SMACK U THRU THIS PHONE HWANG INTAK !!!
Intak bursted out laughing, eyes flickering up to ensure no one was watching him, but the parking lot was pretty much barren now and he had some privacy to enjoy himself. This Yn girl was a lot more fun to speak to now that she opened up a little. Maybe she was just reserved because she was nervous he would find out who she was. And that… was a mystery that would remain until she felt comfortable with telling him.
jae's phone: SOERY SORRY 🤣🤣 i couldnt help myself!!
yer a wizard yn!: u can go find a new mechanic 🚶♀️
jae's phone: NO NONO WAIIIIUT ur so sensitive 😔
yer a wizard yn!: and ur lame ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
jae's phone: i take personal offense to that
yer a wizard yn!: sounds like a u problem
jae's phone: man how tf was jae friends w u, he was even more sensitive than i am T-T
yer a wizard yn!: he was like a golden retriever i suppose, he liked to make friends
jae's phone: i like to make friends too :( can we be friends, yn 😔
yer a wizard yn!: sorry i'm being called away. lmk if the car starts acting up again
Intak didn't have to pretend he was upset that she just left the conversation. He wondered if this was the universe telling him to finally get over Jaehyuk's death and move on. But then again, if that were the case, then Yn's entrance into his life wouldn't have been necessary. Maybe there was an ultimate purpose to this, he thought, as he buckled himself in and put the two phones in the cupholder. Maybe this was the beginning of the end to his grieving.
"Who was that?"
Ln Yn jumped out of her skin, the screen of her phone pressed to her chest, as she whirled around to find Kim Jongseob peering over her shoulder with a less than amused look on his face. "No one."
He cocked a sharp eyebrow up. "Uh-huh. You don't have any other friends outside of me and Soul, so—"
"I do too have friends besides you guys."
"No one you text like that though," he called over his shoulder as he disappeared into his room, face buried into the screen of his own phone. The kid's eyes were glued to that thing, she swore to god. Sometimes, she would walk into his room and find him passed out in bed with his phone still actively playing whatever TV show he was binging.
Yn walked into the living room from the main corridor to find Haku Shota, or more commonly referred to as Soul, lounging on the couch. He too was on his phone. "Is this a thing now? We all hang out together but separately," she mused, plopping down on the other end of the couch so she could prop her legs and feet in his lap.
Shota moved his arms up so she could settle in comfortably before resting his hands and phone on her feet. "Nothing to do outside."
She deadpanned at him. "You're kidding. What's the new penny board you got then? Chopped liver?"
"It's raining."
"The sky is as clear as a diamond, Shota." It was almost summer break, after all. It was one of hers, and her friends', favorite times of the year, because no school, and all of the rich assholes on the hill would go off their separate ways to Cancun or something. Anywhere but here, at least. Far away from her.
As for Yn herself? She planned on clocking in some more time at the shop and hanging out with these losers—if they ever got off their phones.
She unconsciously checked her own phone screen for notifications. From who? Well, Jongseob hadn't exactly been wrong when he said the two people she texted most were him and Soul. A year ago, she had even texted her parents more, and a certain Hwang Jaehyuk. She hadn't been expecting a response from Jaehyuk's phone when she texted the number. She'd just seen his younger brother and the smoke billowing from the car—she hadn't been thinking.
It probably wasn't very cool of her to dismiss herself from the conversation so swiftly, but speaking to Intak… she closed her eyes, draped her arm over her eyes. If she closed her eyes and imagined, maybe Jaehyuk would give her a clue as to what he thought she should do. He really had spoken the world of Intak, but even he had managed to hide their friendship from him. Perhaps not out of not trusting Intak, but simply not trusting anyone. She'd been clinging to a cliff face when she'd finally told Jongseob and Soul. It wasn't like she could avoid it, anyway, since Jaehyuk came by the repair shop so often and the two kids worked there, too.
"Hey—" a poke in her arm. She lifted her arm from her face and saw Jongseob leaning over the back of the couch with a frown on his face. "—you okay, noona?"
She blinked, then craned her neck to see what Soul was doing. He was looking at her, too, awaiting her answer. Jongseob only called her noona when he was serious. She cleared her throat. "Yeah, just tired."
It was quiet for a beat. Jongseob poked her arm again.
She caved. "I texted Jae's number."
Jongseob and Soul exchanged glances. "Hwang Jaehyuk hyung? Yn, but he's—why?"
She couldn't meet either of their eyes, and she sat up, tucking her feet under her butt. "Mmh. I dunno. I was just leaving the parking lot to meet up with you guys when I saw the convertible out of the corner of my eye." She gestured vaguely with her hand, "There was steam coming out the hood again, and I just—I just pulled up his contact like normal. And his brother answered."
"His brother answered?" Jongseob leapt over the back of the couch to crash onto the cushion between Yn and Soul. His eyes were wide, a strange picture with his copper-bleached hair. "Does he know who you are?"
"He knows my name and that I knew Jae and helped him with the car, but that's it." She continued, "I just walked him through starting up the engine again; that's it. I promise."
Even Soul let out an exhale of relief. It wasn't that Jongseob and Soul hated Jaehyuk—it was more so their fear of what Jaehyuk had been: a resident of the Summit. And in this damned town… no one down in the hollows would be caught dead as a Summit Lover, and no one on the hill would be caught dead as a Hollows Sympathizer. That was just how it worked. One did not care about the other; the feeling was mutual. Jaehyuk had never cared that Yn was a poor gutter girl. All he'd cared about was that she was a good person who could fix his car. That, she was.
"I kind of miss the rich bastard," Jongseob murmured, gaze far off. Calling Jaehyuk a "rich bastard" was affectionate in Jongseob's book. Yn's closest friends were Jongseob and Soul, and she was happy they had warmed up to Jaehyuk—turned out, none of them were so different. But discrimination ran rampant in this town, and thus, their friendship and connection had to remain a secret.
Soul made a vague motion like he was nodding his head.
Yn swallowed. She glanced down at her phone and toyed with the case peeling away from itself. "Yeah... Yeah, I kind of miss him, too."

SUMMER (RISING JUNIORS).
INTAK'S eyelids stuck together like glue, but the sharp morning light beaming into his face pried them open. The heavy embroidered curtains on either side of his bed were violently ripped open and a large weight launched onto the bed beside him, practically sending his body flying into the air.
"What the fu—?" Intak cursed, sitting up in bed and trying to get a grasp of reality. His room erupted into delighted cackles—hyenas, if you would—and he dug the soles of his palms into his eyes with a groan. "I hate you guys."
A hand clapped down on his shoulder with a warm squeeze. "If it weren't for us, you'd be sleeping the day away," came Taeyang's voice. Of course, he had been the one to invade Intak's bed space.
"That was the idea," Intak whined, lips forming a pout as he rested up against the headboard.
Keeho chuckled from the foot of the bed. "Yeah, yeah. Well get up! We're gonna get dim sum."
Intak rolled his head to rest on Taeyang's shoulder. "The dim sum place doesn't start serving until 11, assholes."
Jiung appeared from the other side of the room where he had been tying the curtain back with the cord into a neat bow. His face was twisted into a distasteful frown as he surveyed the clothes hanging off of almost every piece of furniture in the room. "Okay and? It's 10:30, sleeping beauty."
"I was gonna put those away," Intak said through a yawn, blindly gesturing toward the three different jackets hanging on the bedpost. Jiung's frown deepened, nose wrinkled, as he plucked the jackets up and dutifully headed for the closet.
"Why are you so tired anyway, dude?" Keeho asked. He had pulled his phone out from his pocket, most likely replying to his parents to tell them he wouldn't be headed to the company building today. "We literally ended our movie marathon early yesterday because you said you wanted to sleep or something."
That triggered something in the back of Intak's mind, and he removed his head from Taeyang's shoulder to feel around the blankets, sheets, pillows, for his—bingo. He snatched his phone up, molten hot from overuse, and powered it on. Luckily, it hung onto life at just 6% battery; goddamn, he must have fallen asleep while on call with Yn last night.
…while on call with Yn last night. The thought brought a smile to his face, one that Taeyang definitely noticed.
The older Choi cousin poked the small divot in Intak's cheek from his smile. "Aye, what're you smiling about?"
Intak cleared his throat and busied himself with finding his charging cable and letting his phone charge on the nightstand. "The thought of eating all your har gow!" he giggled, abruptly leaping out of bed and heading for the closet that Jiung was busy organizing.
Taeyang squawked after him. "Hey, punk! You better not—"
Intak shooed Jiung out of the closet space before closing the door behind him. He exhaled sharply, fingers massaging his crusty eyes. The smile had yet to disappear from his face.
jae's phone: maaaaan did i fall asleep on u last night ?? 😩🤕
yer a wizard yn!: yup
yer a wizard yn!: did u know that u snore 😗
jae's phone: that's a lil embarrassing
yer a wizard yn!: it's okay it was cute
"I'm hungry."
Yn rolled her eyes, the back of her hand dabbing the sweat from her forehead. "Then get food."
Jongseob groaned melodramatically with his head craned backward at an uncomfortable angle, sweat dripping from his damp orange bangs onto the cement floor of the garage. "But I want ramen."
"I don't understand the problem," she sighed, "there's hot water and packets in—"
"I could use some ramen." Soul perked up from his station. He had his blond hair held by a gray bandana tied cutely at the front.
Now both kids were gazing at her with big, brown puppy eyes and pouts, all practically begging the same thing: they wanted real ramen. Not something out of a plastic bag that could be made in two minutes. They wanted something sit-down, steam-rising, creamy, authentic, expensive. Well, it didn't necessarily have to be expensive. It just had to not be 'instant.'
Yn reached for her phone to check for the time, noting the new notification on the lock screen, as well.
tak!: ln's auto repair has a cute little kid on their facebook page
Suppressing the smile on her face into a smirk, she decided that the three of them had been working far too long to be considering this as summer break. And as much as they needed the money and time, they also desperately needed down time. Her mom would be able to reopen the shop later in the afternoon; business had been slow anyway.
"Okay, fine!" She said, which was immediately followed by cheers and the clinking of tools falling to concrete. "But you both stink, so go home and freshen up while I close up here, okay?"
They didn't need to be told twice. Soul was already wrestling his bicycle out from the corner of the garage, and Jongseob passed by her with a large grin on his face to get to the inner office. "Thanks, Yn!"
Yn let her smile come out completely as she hummed her acknowledgement.
yn's phone: r u stalking our fb page lmao we haven't posted anything there since i was a fetus
tak!: bet ur even cuter now than u were then
Yn could only sit there and grin down at her phone screen for a moment. In the background, Soul and Jongseob were arguing about who got to use the shower at Yn's place first, since it was the closest house to the shop. Their sounds faded the further they rode away from the shop, and Yn typed her reply.
yn's phone: avoiding my accusation w flattery i see 🤔
tak!: is my curiosity a crime snookums :l
tak!: y haven't u guys updated pics anyway :0
yn's phone: hm idk ? ig just w lots of things happening these past few years, we forgot to maintain that form of community presence
tak!: ahh i see
tak!: u were a really cute kid tho yn fr
yn's phone: lol thanks >< i think everyone looks cute when they're young tho
tak!: that's tru
yn's phone: hey if u send me a pic for ur contact pfp, i'll send u one back
Then she powered her phone off and tucked it into the back pocket of her cargo pants, skipping around the garage to close the shop down. If Jongseob and Soul were here, she would most definitely get an earful. But good thing they weren't here, right?
When she finally got back home, she found Jongseob nose-deep in his phone game on the couch, his orange hair dampened over his forehead and a towel wrapped around his shoulders. Shota was just strolling out of the bathroom, steam trailing after him, while running a towel through his own hair. She quickly found a fresh set of clothes in her room before hopping into the shower herself.
As she clipped her wet hair up and out of the way, she saw the flicker of something across her phone screen on the bathroom counter. Again, and again, and—
Knock knock knock knock knock— "I'M HUNGRYYYY," Jongseob whined from outside the bathroom door.
Yn rolled her eyes and tucked her phone into her back pocket before ripping the bathroom door open. She sent a firm look at him that said 'Really?'
Jongseob beamed sheepishly. "Haha?"
She deadpanned. "Not haha. C'mon now; is Shota ready to go?"
"Mhm," he piped up, skipping toward the front door. He thumped the back of the couch where Soul had replaced him. "Let's go, let's go!"
Yn could only wonder why the kid was so pumped to finally get lunch, but at the same time, she understood that he probably hadn't had something "restaurant"-level in awhile. This was a luxury that could only be afforded to them during moments where time was infinite. And during summer, time seemed to flow like the milky way.
The three of them began the brief trek to the bus stop, since Yn's mom had taken the family car out to run some errands. It wasn't too bad of a walk anyway, and there seemed to always be a bus coming by every ten minutes down in the Hollows.
They would hop off at the stop in the Crossroads shopping center, aiming for the small, yet upscale ramen shop in the corner. Passing through the open doorway, the three friends chorused their greetings to the chef behind the counter before perching on the stools at the bar.
"Man, oxtail sounds so good right now," Soul pouted to himself, hand against his cheek.
Yn glanced at him before turning her own gaze back to the menu in front of her. The oxtail did sound good, but it was a lot more expensive than everything else. Today wasn't even a special occasion either… she'd probably wait until another day. She passed Soul another look, and at his slight frown, she understood that he was under the same mental crisis as she was.
"Shota-yah," she said to him over Jongseob's head. "If you want the oxtail, you should get it. I can help cover for you."
Soul's eyes widened at this. "Oh, no, no, noona! I couldn't do that; no way! I can get it some other time."
"I insist," she said. If she paid for her bowl and the extra for Soul's… it wouldn't be too bad. No, it definitely wouldn't be bad. This was doable.
Guilt flashed across Shota's face, but she could see the yearning there as well. "I dunno…"
Yn nudged Jongseob as an attempt to switch the subject. "What're you thinking of, Seob?"
He cocked a brow at her. "Don't think you're gonna pay for my lunch, too."
"Who said I would pay for your lunch?"
"Hey!"
She laughed, her lips pursing into an amused smile at Jongseob's pinched brows and annoyed expression. "Only kidding… kind of."
Jongseob opened his mouth to say something, but his eyes flickered to something behind Yn, towards the entrance. Yn heard the chatter and laughter pouring in as a large group of teenagers filed into the shop. There were maybe twelve of them in total, all of whom decked out in designer brands and handbags and shoes and fresh manicures. Their hair was silky and styled, bodies adorned in shiny pieces of jewelry.
Summit kids. Well fuck.
They were loud, boisterous. Yn could feel the shift in her friends' demeanors as Jongseob sent the group nasty looks over his shoulder and Soul kept his back firmly toward them. She prayed to whoever was watching her that they wouldn't do anything to ruin their lunch.
The ramen shop was suddenly ten times smaller now.
Yn heard the group's chatter dull down when they realized just who exactly they were to share the shop with. The chatter became louder, laughter became sharper. She didn't need to strain her ears to hear what they were saying, rather, she was putting more energy in trying to tune them out than anything.
"Do you think we can pay the uncle there to kick them out?"
"I don't even think they could afford to tip. Buying this place out shouldn't be difficult."
Buying out a ramen shop? Just because they were in the midst of a couple of Hollows kids… dramatic much?
Yn stilled as she heard the crisp click, click, click of a pair of new shoes approach the bar where she and her friends sat. From her peripheral vision, she caught a slim, smooth hand adorned in tasteful silver rings and a jade bracelet, motioning to the chef behind the counter.
"Excuse me, uncle! I was wondering if my friends and I could… have the room."
A flash of bills. Actually—Yn couldn't even estimate how much was in that girl's hand, but at the sight of it, the uncle immediately began to wave Yn, Jongseob, and Soul off their stools.
Yn gaped at him, and took her first full glimpse of the girl. She looked familiar, no doubt someone from the academy. The girl looked upon the three of them with a blank stare, pretty, manicured hand waving goodbye to them and nodding toward the door.
"We're paying customers, too!" Yn protested to the chef, who only shrugged. She huffed. "You've got to be shitting me."
A loud laugh from behind them—it was from the larger group. She whirled around, nostrils flared. A boy from the group sneered, "You literally have grease stains on your neck. Don't you think you should be cleaner before thinking you could come and dirty a respectable establishment?"
Respectable establishment, my ass, Yn thought. She suppressed the urge to reach up to feel the back of her neck for any lingering stains from earlier while Jongseob ushered both her and Soul out of the door.
They were halfway back down the hill before Yn could even think to say anything. The anger boiling in her blood had simmered down to something akin to disappointment rather than anger. Part of it, she reasoned, that the uncle was only looking out for his best interests. The Summit kids could fund his shop for life if they really wanted to, but her and her friends? Not a chance.
But… she glanced over at Jongseob and Soul who remained quiet as well. It was odd to see Jongseob so quiet, but perhaps he was fuming as she was and trying not to throw a fit.
The sun beat down above them as they walked down the hill, sweat already beginning to drip down the back of her neck. She finally reached behind her neck, on the shirt collar, then caught a glimpse of the car grease staining her fingertips. She felt her neck and cheeks grow hotter in embarrassment.
"I'm sorry guys," she finally said softly, the words too difficult to put power behind. She didn't know how she managed to choke them out. Guilt pooled in her gut, guilt for not being able to stand up for them better and to be able to get her two best friends fed and treated well.
Both Jongseob and Soul hummed their replies incoherently.
She swallowed, holding a hand up over her eyes as she looked up from the ground. "It's okay. I'll just make some ramen at home. It's not oxtail, but…" But what?
Jongseob glared straight ahead. "I hate those fucking entitled little pricks."
Ah, there it was.
Yn pursed her lips together with a nod. "Yeah."
"And don't apologize, Yn," Soul said. "You have nothing to be sorry about."
She swallowed again, but it was a little more difficult this time. "I just wanted you guys to have a good time and to eat well."
Her friends both looked over at her with something glistening in their eyes. "We know," said Jongseob. "Thanks though."
The disappointment fell from them like waves, and Yn couldn't seem to brace for impact quite as well as she hoped she could.

nonidol!hwang intak x f!reader
when summit poster boy hwang intak's car breaks down in the school parking lot, it sets off a chain of events that leads to you, someone he was perhaps always meant to find. the only problem is that the two of you are far from the ideal couple, and your peers are apt to keep that status quo.

a/n: i've realized this has been pretty fast-paced but it's only cuz i wanna get to the good parts 😭💀
SUMMER (RISING JUNIORS).
YN stepped into the cooler, darkened building of the repair shop and immediately reached for her towel sitting on the front desk. As she swiped away the sweat dripping down her face and neck, she guzzled down as much water from her bottle as she could intake at once. It was a hot day out, and usually there were fans set up in the garage area, but the electricity had stopped working three hours ago.
The door flew open, and Jongseob's sopping wet head of hair poked inside. "Hey, lover boy messaged you."
She rolled her eyes. "Stop snooping, Jongseob."
He smiled with a shrug. "Tell that to your notification sound."
"And his name is not lover boy."
For some reason, that made Jongseob's smile grow wider, but before she could question it, he ducked back outside. She knew that if she appeared immediately after him, he and Soul would never let her live it down, so she continued to take her time drinking water and patting herself dry. As usual, it was a relatively slow day at the shop, and her mom had left the three of them there to watch the grass grow. She wasn't supposed to be in any hurry.
When she finally stepped back into the garage, she was greeted by a wave of heat that almost knocked her over. She felt the sweat drip down the side of her face again, despite having cooled down inside just seconds ago. Jongseob's playlist of r&b hits filled the space along with the familiar sounds of metal fixings.
Soul and Jongseob were both at their respective stations, so she made her way over to her own station and picked up her phone. Sure enough, there were messages from Intak sent about five minutes ago.
tak: *sent a picture*
tak: one of my friends just got back from his trip and we're at the roller skating rink in the crossroads 👀👀👀 maybe i'll see u here later??? wink wonk
Yn smiled to herself, but tried to suppress it for the sake of her own ego and pride (and the two others blatantly watching her from their stations). She had changed the contact name from "jae" to "tak" a couple days after first reaching out to him. It had seemed natural to let go of the contact name and bring in something new; it was an attempt at moving along in the grieving process, if you would.
The image Intak had sent was a selfie of him in fuschia-toned lighting, most likely from the neon lights in the Crossro-ller Rink in the Crossroads community halfway up the hill. His black hair was tousled just slightly in an effortless sort of mess, but he wore a plain black T-shirt and a chain collar, his lips pursed at the camera. He didn't show which friend he was with, but it wasn't like she would have paid attention to him anyway.
"Awwwh, Soul look! She's blushing!"
Yn rolled her eyes again and blindly flipped Jongseob the bird over her shoulder. His cackles of delight echoed in the garage, accompanied by Soul's softer laugh.
yn's phone: i have to give it to u, i think ur getting better at this "being smooth" thing
yn's phone: but i have to work, sorry buddy wink wonk
The thought did cross her mind, even for a split second, to ditch the shop and go to the roller skating rink. Intak would never know who she was—just another poor girl crawling up from the gutter to skate around. The thrill of it energized her though, and she set her phone aside to get back to work with just a hint of a skip in her step.
Jongseob peered out from under the car he was tweaking. "You're so whipped; it's insane," he teased with a feigned gag.
When she stuck her tongue out at him, her phone dinged to announce another incoming message. And another. And another—
"Are you gonna get that or should I?" Jongseob gestured to her station table with one oil-stained hand. He grinned at her scowl. "You're so touchy, sheesh. Fine, but if it's important and you miss it…"
Yn grumbled under her breath and stomped back over to her phone. "You're so stupid."
"And you're stupid whipped!" He cackled, then ducked out of view.
tak: r…. r u mocking me or were the winks genuine…..
tak: wait where do u work :0
tak: ur missing out tho yk 😋
tak: *sent a video*
tak: wait wdym u THINK? i AM GOOD AT BEING SMOOTH
The new picture looked like the saved recording from a Snapchat story. It was him and Yoon Keeho skating around the roller rink beneath the combination of a sparkly disco ball and rainbow neon lights. He still looked as good as he did in the picture, and the video gave a top view that was angled downward over the two tall boys' heads. Yn had definitely seen Keeho and his head of dark blue hair around school before. From what she had heard through the grapevine, he had an awful lot of sass and character stored up in him.
yn's phone: that's confidential :l
yn's phone: looks like a lot of fun! haven't been up there in awhile tbh but i'll think about going soon maybe (^^ゞ
yn's phone: whatever helps u sleep at night tak 🤕🤥
The smile on her face slipped as she read her own messages back, though. Her eyes caught onto one phrasing in particular—the words "up there" yelled at her from the screen with about a dozen sirens blaring. She slapped a hand to her forehead. "Fuuuck."
Her friends peered up from their projects, eyes wide with curiosity and concern. "What? What happened?"
"I said to him 'up there' in relation to the roller rink. There's no way he doesn't know I'm from the Hollows—" Her words were cut off by Intak's own replies.
tak: "tak" 🥰😩😗🥺🫂 someone hold me that's so cute
"I guess not," Jongseob said as he peered over her shoulder at the message, Soul leaning over on her other side. "Man, that's disgusting. Even he's fluffy."
Yn scoffed and waved him off. "Oh, shut up you."
yn's phone: ur friend can hold u lmao
tak: u don't wanna hold me? 😔
yn's phone: if u figure out who i am, then sure ;]
tak: game on.
Though there was a part of her that wanted to get to know Intak like she had his brother, she knew there would be consequences. If he found out her social standing, it could lose her Intak, for one. Even though his brother didn't believe in following the foul classism and bullying his peers up on the hill participated in, that didn't mean Intak felt the same way. (Though, she wanted so badly to believe the opposite.)
It wouldn't matter anyway, right? Losing him? If he discriminated against her based on her income and where she lived, then he could screw off.
(It wasn't like she wasn't used to losing people anyway.)
"Oh my god, who is making you blush so hard, dude?"
Intak's head shot up from where it had been buried nose-deep in his and Yn's text chain. He subtly moved his brother's phone screen out of sight as Keeho came to sit down next to him on the leather sectional. The two of them had come back to Keeho's house about an hour ago from the roller skating rink, legs and backs and behinds aching from hours of skating. It had been a breath of fresh air, getting out of the house. As vast as the Hwang estate was, it was never big enough. Intak had always felt suffocated, and perhaps that was partly because his father shared a living space with him.
"Hm?" Intak mentally willed his heart to calm down.
Keeho eyed him strangely, but his smile was teasing. He reached for the remote to unpause the movie on screen. "Are you still purging Jae hyung's phone? You've been pretty occupied with it ever since the last few weeks of school." Keeho tossed a piece of popcorn into his mouth, and Intak cautiously reached for a handful of the buttery treat for himself.
If "purging" meant keeping in contact with one of his older brother's old friends, then yes. Because of Yn, he probably spent more screen time on Jaehyuk's phone than on his own device. "Yeah, I guess you can say that. Just lots of stuff I didn't know about him."
Intak sunk into the couch and tucked the phone away into his pocket, albeit reluctantly. It almost seemed unfair that Yn knew more about him than he did about her, but he was sure there was a good reason for it.
Well… especially if his hunch was correct.
The movie on screen wasn't very interesting, to be completely honest. Intak had seen it about a dozen times before, but it was the movie Keeho had chosen randomly with the Amazon fire stick thing, and he pretty much stuck with it because he didn't know what to watch either.
Intak suddenly cleared his throat. "Can I… ask you a question?"
Keeho glanced over at him. "Of course. What's up?"
"What do you think about the Hollows kids?" He asked slowly, choosing his words carefully. He tried to pose it as neutrally as possible; he had never really gotten a clear stance from any of his friends about what they thought about the people who lived down the hill from them, but generally, they never seemed against the Hollows kids. At least, they never went out of their way to "show them their place." Those were the obnoxious people from their social class whom Intak was pointedly not friends with.
Come to think of it, Intak hadn't gotten a direct answer from his brother either. But then again, Jaehyuk had never been much of a bully sympathizer or bystander.
Keeho raised his eyebrow as if surprised by the question, which wasn't completely unexpected. "Uhhh—I think they're fine. Like the whole community discrimination is a little stupid, but…" He shrugged, "They can bark as long as they don't bite, y'know."
Intak pursed his lips together in a slow nod.
"Why do you ask?"
"Oh—uh, no reason." Intak shifted. What did that answer even mean? "Just curious."
His friend bobbed his head. "Okay… well, if they look at me funny, I'll look at them funny, too. I dunno, dude. It's hard to explain, but if I don't have to get involved, then I won't. You know it's complicated."
Intak supposed he could… live with that answer. It wasn't like he fully accepted it either. After all, he didn't even know what his answer would be... Right?
If faced with the opportunity to befriend someone from the Hollows, would he follow his damn heart or succumb to peer pressure?
This felt illegal.
Intak sat behind his desk at home, hair damp from his recent shower, his laptop opened to a new web browser. He was searching for car repair shops in the Hollows region, something that had been poking at his brain since the roller rink. He didn't know if Yn had even realized she had said "up there" in regards to the roller skating rink, and to be honest, it wasn't until the third time he read the message that it finally clicked in his brain. (Sue him, he had the nickname "Tak" stuck in his head like some fool.)
It didn't really make sense that Jae would have gone all the way down to the Hollows to get a luxury, vintage car repaired and maintained, but because Yn and Jae had met over the phone, it was just a little more plausible. There were a few holes in his theory, clearly, but it was all logical. Actually, the more Intak thought about it, the more it made sense.
There were a couple repair shops in the Hollows, but only one of them was family-owned and not a chain. The name was something along the lines of Ln's Auto Repair—simple and to the point.
He was seconds away from whipping out the academy yearbook.
yer a wizard yn!: ayo r u alone rn?
Intak bit his lip in a poor attempt to hide his smile.
jae's phone: oh so u wanna get me alone?
yer a wizard yn!: u said u almost got caught by ur friend AGAIN earlier õ_ó
jae's phone: and she CARES!! 😩🙏
yer a wizard yn!: smh T-T
jae's phone: admit that u deflect my flirting bc ur flustered
yer a wizard yn!: u were flirting????
jae's phone: that's so hurtful.
yer a wizard yn!: plus, i bet u get flustered easier than i do, hwang intak
yer a wizard yn!: i bet ur blushing so hard rn 👀
He instinctively pressed the back of his hand to his cheek—and goddamn, it was hot. He wasn't about to admit that though.
jae's phone: not the government name 🙁
yer a wizard yn!: ahh look who's deflecting now 🤭
jae's phone: … touché
He paused, biting his lip. Hey, btw…|
No, he thought to himself, spamming the backspace button with his thumb. But why not? He was already searching it up—it didn't feel right without asking her first.
jae's phone: okay i don't wanna come off as stalkerish but…|
Before he could finish his text, Yn's own popped up.
yer a wizard yn!: anyways the reason i came to bug u was bc i m bored :l
A small laugh fell from Intak's lips. Omg ur finally reciprocating my feelings?? :')
yer a wizard yn!: bro what feelings 😭😭
jae's phone: ur literally so mean to me 😔 y am i here to suffer huh
yer a wizard yn!: dunno dude it's cuz i'm cool B)
jae's phone: not w that emoji ur not 💀 what r u? 60???
yer a wizard yn!: experience-wise, yes
jae's phone: and humor-wise 🤕🙁
jae's phone: a little concerning tbh
jae's phone: but ur bored? lol i thought ur usually w ur friends?
He was usually the bored one because his own friends were with their own families and away from this damned place. Intak technically knew a vast sea of people, but it didn't mean he really knew them. He hadn't smiled while talking to someone new like he did with Yn since he first met his three best friends. Crazy how one could feel so alone in an ocean of people.
yer a wizard yn!: they had to go home to help their families w some stuff lol so im just here ig
yer a wizard yn!: my mom's busy w work rn too so i have the house and it's so quiet haha
jae's phone: r u trying to make moves on me rn 👀 insinuating that the house is empty ;))
jae's phone: JKJK IM SORRY IF THAT MADE U UNCOMFORTABLE KSFBJEBFJRJF
yer a wizard yn!: dude do u just flirt w everybody is this a reflex or something 😭😭😭😭
jae's phone: n,,no just u :')
yer a wizard yn!: tak, honey, r u stuttering thru text T-T
Intak leaned back in his desk chair with a soft giggle.
jae's phone: yes my honey bunches of oats 😚 i did stutter
yer a wizard yn!: damn ??? okay 😭 (honey bunches of oats huh 🤨)
jae's phone: do i make u speechless, snookums
jae's phone: or how about sweet lemon drop daisies
jae's phone: lovey dovey partridge in a pear tree?
yer a wizard yn!: HELLOAKDJKS 😭😭
jae's phone: hUH? WHATS THAT? U LIKE THE NAME SNOOKUMS???
jae's phone: i'd change ur contact name to snookums, but i like the hp reference :/
yer a wizard yn!: i don't think i've laughed that hard in awhile tbh 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
yer a wizard yn!: where tf dID U GET ALL THOSE ???
jae's phone: wdym snookums :(( they came from my love for u
He unconsciously raised his hand to his face and felt the scorching hot skin there. Yeah, he was so far gone. Maybe a glass of ice water would do him well.
yer a wizard yn!: okay,,, i think i've calmed down now 🤧🤧
yer a wizard yn!: were u doing anything interesting before i interrupted 🤩🤩
jae's phone: yes yes very important stuff o7 top secret info
yer a wizard yn!: who's the vague one now :// lol jkjk
Intak's eyes moved back to his laptop, of which the screen had faded to black. He moved his fingers over the trackpad to wake the device up and display the page for Ln's Auto Repair again. This felt like—was—an invasion of privacy.
jae's phone: okay uhm… don't be mad
yer a wizard yn!: uhhhh haha that's not very reassuring 😅 what'd u do lol
jae's phone: okok uhm im so sorry but i promise i don't stalk people for fun and i was really curious and i noticed that earlier u said that the roller skating rink was "up" from where u were and i figured u were prob in the hollows, so i looked up the auto repair shops in the hollows… and i think i might have found yours?
jae's phone: ik this was an invasion of privacy, i feel so bad
jae's phone: pls don't be mad
Intak dropped the phone onto his desk with his eyes pinned to the screen, waiting for her answer. He bit his lip, knee bouncing frantically. The dots would appear and disappear, then reappear again.
Finally, he watched Yn's reply come in.
yer a wizard yn!: it's… actually kind of relieving ? in a way
yer a wizard yn!: i actually noticed my mistake earlier too but i figured since u didn't say anything about it, u might not have noticed, but ig i shouldn't have underestimated u haha
yer a wizard yn!: so,,, this is it then?
Panic seized his chest, and he picked up the phone so fast it almost fell right out of his hands.
jae's phone: WOAH WOAH WAIT
jae's phone: hey what's wrong? no this isn't **it**
yer a wizard yn!: well u know im from the gutter now right lol
jae's phone: and?? y should that matter to me
jae's phone: yn i don't care that ur from the hollows like u literally don't care that im from the hill right?? and my brother didn't care either and u had no problem being friends w him too
When she didn't respond for a couple of minutes, Intak felt the furrow in his brows as his thumbs raced over the phone keyboard to type out another message.
jae's phone: call me?
He pressed the button to send the message and left the phone on the desk, waiting for the phone to ring. His knee would not stop bouncing to save his life, and so he turned the phone screen off and busied his hands and eyes by looking through his mess of an email inbox. Every few seconds, his eyes darted to the phone, however, the screen remained dark and still. No answer, no phone call.
Just silence, and the palpitations of his nervous heart.
He screwed up, hadn't he? He had just scared her off—and that in itself messed with his head.
He was about to give up for the night—maybe resort to finding a drink downstairs and curl up with a movie—until the dull vibration of the phone jolted him out of his chair. He fumbled with the slim device, and somehow managed to accept the call.
"Hello?" He answered, almost breathlessly.
Yn's throat cleared on the other side, voice low. "Hey. Sorry it took me a couple minutes to call. I think I was just nervous." Her throat cleared another time and it sounded like it was accompanied by cracking knuckles.
Intak relaxed a little into his seat. "No, no, don't worry about it. I—" I was dying, "—take your time. I get it. I was just worried I scared you off." He laughed a little at the end as if he hadn't just experienced a self-induced heart attack.
"No, don't worry," she rushed to reply. "You didn't scare me off. I think I do a good enough job at that already."
He turned on speaker mode and placed the phone on the desk so he could fidget with his fingers. "Ah… if it makes you feel better, I feel the same way—scared, I mean. And I really did mean what I said… with the not caring about you being from the Hollows."
A beat passed. "Thanks, Intak. That's… really cool of you."
He nodded. "Right, yeah. Just the...the bare minimum," he said quietly with a flippant flick of his wrist. And it was the bare minimum, but in a community like theirs, bare minimum was a high standard when it came to classism and discrimination. "So—we're cool, right? We're cool?"
She hummed. "Yeah, of course."
A smile crawled onto his face and tugged at the corners of his lips. "Good. I'm glad." He leaned forward to rest his elbows on the desk with his cheeks leaning on the palms of his hands. "Listen, Yn... you can be comfortable with me, I hope. I—I hope you can feel safe with me like you did with my brother."
His heartbeat thundered in his ears almost as loud as the volume of the call, and his cheeks were aflame beneath his palms. It was a marvel how one person could make him feel this way. Hearing her voice sent a course of tingles down his spine, made his toes curl. It was a feeling not entirely foreign, yet completely new at the same time.
"Thank you," was her soft reply. "I hope so, too."

when summit poster boy hwang intak's car breaks down in the school parking lot, it sets off a chain of events that leads to you, someone he was perhaps always meant to find. the only problem is that the two of you are far from the ideal couple, and your peers are apt to keep that status quo.

a/n: there's quite a bit of texting in this one so i apologize 😭
SUMMER (RISING JUNIORS).
INTAK wasn't one to give up easily. A couple weeks after school had been dismissed for the much-anticipated summer break, he was still in town while the rest of his friends were off traveling the world with their families. His dad had left the house early, as per usual, to head to the company building for work, so he enjoyed the serenity of an empty house as he took his time rolling out of bed and making himself breakfast.
As he sat on one of the breakfast bar stools in the kitchen with a bowl of cereal before him, he pulled out his brother's phone and opened up one of the text threads. The last thing he had texted Yn was about properly working out a stain—he'd received a very (albeit amusing) passionate lecture from her about drinking or consuming anything in the car, because if he spilled anything on the seats, she would risk her own identity to come and beat him up.
He'd had a very good laugh at that.
jae's phone: bored
Not even a minute later, he received a reply.
yer a wizard yn!: why r u still using his phone?
jae's phone: well do u want someone to find your contact on *my* phone, miss secrecy?
yer a wizard yn!: fair enough
jae's phone: hey how old r u
yer a wizard yn!: wow it never occurred to u that i could just be some old pervert?
jae's phone: r u??
yer a wizard yn!: lucky for u, no
jae's phone: lucky for me? 👀
jae's phone: before u virtually threaten to hit me again
jae's phone: r u my brother's age then? u must be
yer a wizard yn!: nope
jae's phone: my age then? idk if u know my age actually
yer a wizard yn!: am i 5 years old? no
jae's phone: i will , hit u
yer a wizard yn!: LMAO
In spite of his texts, Intak laughed down at the counter and set aside the phone for a second so he could spoon some more of the sweet cereal milk into his mouth. He and this Yn person had been trading texts these past couple of weeks. All of the conversations had been brief and harmless at most; it was all just his attempts at holding a conversation while Yn deflected anything that would expose who she was. Except for this conversation and their first one, he had no inkling of her identity.
yer a wizard yn!: okay, fine yes, i'm ur age i think
yer a wizard yn!: at least that's what jae said
Intak leaned into the conversation. Do u go to the academy too?
yer a wizard yn!: my friends say that's confidential
jae's phone: ur friends knew my brother too??
yer a wizard yn!: mhm
jae's phone: okay well,,, wait tf they're READING THESE??
He could hear her laughing at him now, even if he didn't know what her laugh sounded like. Did Jaehyuk know all these people in secret? He felt like a right idiot now.
yer a wizard yn!: now they're not, i just shooed them away
yer a wizard yn!: i can't tell u explicitly, but if u figure it out on ur own per se,,,,
jae's phone: ahhhh i see
jae's phone: don't say anything if u go to the academy
jae's phone: LETS GOOOO !! 😩
yer a wizard yn!: u r so…
jae's phone: handsome, smart, funny, etc lots to choose from
yer a wizard yn!: *crickets*
jae's phone: rude 😔
jae's phone: doing anything for the summer?
yer a wizard yn!: nah just working and hanging out w friends. u?
jae's phone: ignoring my responsibilities lol
It wasn't exactly a lie. After Jaehyuk had passed away, his father had made it incredibly clear that Intak was now to step into his shoes. No more second child privileges. Plus, how could he find the energy to get away when that was all he did last summer to forget the pain of Jaehyuk leaving?
yer a wizard yn!: once when jae (well ig *you*) and his family went on vacation, he left the car w me. it was kind of weird having that thing just sitting in my garage
jae's phone: really? huh. what year was that
yer a wizard yn!: i think he said u guys were going to jeju or sumn
Ah, that must have been the last vacation Intak could remember enjoying with Jae.
jae's phone: oh yeah, i remember that holiday
jae's phone: he must've really trusted u then
yer a wizard yn!: yeah ig so… couldn’t even drive it then, so maybe that’s why lol
Minutes passed of silence in the text chain. Intak wanted to know what she was thinking on the other side of the phone, if she was even as sad as he was. He'd figured out that his brother and Yn had been really close, so she must have gone through some type of grieving process like he had? He didn't know anyone else as heartbroken as he was. His dad didn't really care, only that his number one heir was now six feet under. Intak was still bitter that his father didn't even stay after the funeral, but he supposed everyone grieved in different ways.
Intak picked up the phone again and began typing. My brother didn't trust a lot of people, he admitted. Idk why I feel the need to but thanks for being there for him.
yer a wizard yn!: wish i had been there for him better to be honest
Yeah, that one hurt. I get that. I blame myself too.
yer a wizard yn!: ur brother loved u a lot tho, intak. that's why he left u the car
yer a wizard yn!: it was something to remember him by
Intak swiped at the warm tears trailing down his face. He wished he didn't have the dumb car. He wished his brother was here instead.
yer a wizard yn!: i'm sorry if i made u upset, but just remember that he loved u so much
yer a wizard yn!: if u ever need someone to talk to who knew him as u did or close to how u did, then come find me
jae's phone: thanks yn
jae's phone: i wish he had trusted me enough to introduce me to u tbh
Somehow, she had figured out that he wasn't saying this as a joke like all the other times.
yer a wizard yn!: he did trust u. he was just trying to protect me
jae's phone: it worries me when u say that
yer a wizard yn!: it's okay just,,, forget i said anything
As if he could just forget that speaking to her could jeopardize her. He didn't even know how this could get her in trouble, if he was interpreting what she was saying correctly. If only Jae had left him a note explaining who Yn was, but he supposed it wasn't … safe to?
jae's phone: how did my brother even find u lol
Great segue, he shoveled a spoon of cereal into his mouth so he didn't have to look at his gross attempt at a subject change.
yer a wizard yn!: strangely enough, just like this
jae's phone: ??
yer a wizard yn!: he texted my number thinking it was this auto repair helpline he found online w his problems and i fixed his car haha
jae's phone: oh yo that's kinda cool tho
yer a wizard yn!: ur both really bad w cars
jae's phone: oUT OF POCKET 😭
jae's phone: wait so u go to the academy
yer a wizard yn!: bye intak
jae's phone: NOOOO WAIT COME BACCCK
It was late, that much he knew, but sleep would not bless his eyes and body and mind. Intak stared up at the dark ceiling of his bedroom with moonlight streaming through the curtains by his bedside. There were too many things in his head to even think about a peaceful night of sleep.
"You could just look her up in the yearbook," he said aloud into the darkness. "But that would be invading her privacy." And Yn had made it so very clear that she was against him finding out her identity. But she had pretty much confirmed that she went to the academy, that she was in his year, and that her name was actually Yn—
Wait. Okay, so maybe she hadn't confirmed the latter yet, but Intak assumed his brother didn't make contact names that didn't make sense.
He sighed. He wished Jaehyuk could have given him some sort of sign.
Intak reached for his phone sitting on the nightstand, but instead of going to YouTube or some other streaming service he opened up her text messages.
Just as he was about to type a greeting, she beat him to it.
yer a wizard yn!: can't sleep either?
jae's phone: yeah ig not
jae's phone: wbu?
yer a wizard yn!: yeah no same
jae's phone: i wanna ask u stuff, but i don't wanna make u uncomfortable. it's not abt u personally, it's just abt ur connection w my brother. idk really
yer a wizard yn!: this is closure for u, i get it
yer a wizard yn!: ask to ur heart's content
jae's phone: did u know… that he was sick?
There was a long pause, and Intak waited patiently while laying on his side.
yer a wizard yn!: i found out really late
yer a wizard yn!: i knew something was wrong, but he was good at hiding it
yer a wizard yn!: i didn't get to say goodbye to him tho
jae's phone: i'm sorry yn
yer a wizard yn!: don't be, it's okay
yer a wizard yn!: were ur friends close to him too?
jae's phone: they thought he was cool and they got along, but they weren't super close. ig i can say ur one of the very few people who prob grieved like i did
yer a wizard yn!: that's… god, that's really sad. everyone at school liked him tho
jae's phone: tch yeah, but yk our school's full of fake shitheads
yer a wizard yn!: yeah fs… i think ur wrong in one aspect tho
jae's phone: what's that?
yer a wizard yn!: *grieves not grieved, i think we're both still grieving
jae's phone: would u be uncomfortable if i sent a voice message?
As soon as he sent the text, he grimaced. Oh no, he was going to be faced with immediate rejection. Intak scrambled onto his stomach and elbows to get in a better position to text faster and beat the three moving dots at the bottom of the screen.
yer a wizard yn!: sure go ahead
jae's phone: WAITWAIT
He wanted to slap himself.
jae's phone: okay uhm gimme a second
jae's phone: didn't actually think u would agree
Good going, idiot. Now what?
Intak sat up against his headboard. He didn't know why he asked in the first place, but maybe he just wanted to voice his thoughts aloud for once. He licked his lips, gathered his thoughts—
"Hey—" he cleared his throat, coughing and wishing he didn't just voice crack. "Sorry, hi. I thought this was gonna be a lot less awkward, but here goes nothing." He paused, then continued on, "Do you ever… miss him? Just miss him a lot. Sometimes I watch movies and they're always like—sometimes I feel them sitting next to me or hear their laughter—and I don't. I don't feel him next to me, I don't hear his voice or his laugh, Yn. I wish I did though. I wish I could miss him like that. Do you think it would hurt less if I did?"
Intak hit the send button, then exited out of the app so he could look for the right kind of music to listen to. The room was just too quiet right now.
To his surprise, when she replied, it was not in the form of a text message, but in the form of her own voice message. He was about to hear her voice. That had to mean something right?
"Hey Intak." His heart thumped. Woah… "Yeah, I was unsure of replying in a voice message, but I thought it was fair. Don't worry; I've gaslit myself enough to feel comfortable," she laughed to herself. "That was a joke, by the way. Yeah, I laugh at my own jokes."
Intak snorted.
The sound of laughter faded slightly as she continued on though. "Yeah, I miss him a lot. I think… I think this past year, I've been trying to ignore the fact that I miss him, but I do. When I saw the convertible steaming that one day, I just couldn't stop myself from texting his number, I guess. Force of habit. I don't really feel those sensations either, but I don't think it would hurt any less if you did feel that way. I think any way you grieve is valid, really." Her voice went quiet at the end. "You're not alone, y'know?"
His cheeks were warm again and his breathing trembled. Intak hugged his knees to his chest, wondering why his head hurt when he was crying, but maybe it was because he had not cried fully in a long time. He sniffled, collecting himself to reply.
"Thanks Yn," he said, voice slightly hoarse from his crying. "You have a nice voice, by the way." Nice was an understatement. His heart was beating a little too fast at the moment.
She replied with, "Thanks Intak. You, too."
jae's phone: u said ur friends knew him too
jae's phone: were they close?
yer a wizard yn!: yeah, i'd say they had gotten to know him almost as well as i did. they hung out w us at the garage
jae's phone: like an auto repair shop?
yer a wizard yn!: yeah
jae's phone: this feels illegal to know
yer a wizard yn!: maybe u deserve a taste of the forbidden for once tho
And for some reason, that engraved itself in his head and right above his heart. He wouldn't know that from here on out, he would wear that phrase like a crown.

hwang intak x gn!reader
1k words, hurt/comfort, soft things, mentions of anxiety/being overwhelmed, mentions of discomfort around family members, head kiss, intimacy
a/n: requests now closed! *sighs* i love him 🙁 thank you to the anon who requested this! hope this brings u comfort <3
He found you perched on the curbside outside the restaurant, the sounds of merriment muffled as the front door closed behind him. You glanced up from your phone to watch him take a seat beside you, his head tucked into a black beanie and hands coming out of his jacket pockets to rest behind him.
"I saw you leave a few minutes ago, but I wasn't sure if you wanted to be alone or not," Hwang Intak murmured and tilted his head in your direction, eyes glued to the establishment across the street to watch people pass by the window. "I'm okay, here, right? I can leave if you don't want me here."
You notched your phone off and set it under your thigh. "No, it's okay," you said, drawing circles on the street. "I just… couldn't stand being around them for too long."
He looked at you now, dark, round eyes really looking at you. Your posture was off, your hair covered your face. Everything about tonight was so off, and he was hitting himself in the head for not seeing it sooner. "I didn't know you were so uncomfortable around your relatives."
You had invited Intak to come to a holiday gathering with your family this evening. They had booked out the mom and pop shop on Main Street that served a taste of home. You'd originally been nervous about inviting him, since the two of you only recently became an item, but you should have never doubted him. Your family seemed to love him anyways, but then again, they always did seem to adore everyone but you. There was always something to complain about.
"Yeah, I mean…" you swallowed. You suddenly found it hard to look him in the eyes. Maybe you were embarrassed. Didn't he say he had a good relationship with his family and relatives? "They're just a little much for me sometimes and I get a little overwhelmed. I'm sure they mean well and stuff but I can't—sometimes I can only handle being around them in small doses."
Intak was quiet for a moment as he considered this, a frown flitting over his pretty features.
You covered your knees with your palms. "I'm sorry I pretty much ditched you, by the way," you added with a grimace. "That wasn't very cool of me."
"It's okay; you needed some air, and I get that."
He had said it so simply that you were almost stunned. He was being so understanding about this, and yet, you still felt awful. Here he was, someone you envisioned to be near perfect, and here you were… You cleared your throat, eyes pinned to the ground. "Thanks for being here tonight. I know it must have been intimidating to meet my entire extended family in one night."
He gave a warm chuckle that enveloped your body in an audible hug. "No worries, honey. I was actually really excited to just, I dunno, hang out with you for a holiday that was important to you."
Your heart soared, and you turned your head to look at him.
Intak pressed his lips into a smile. "And it doesn't matter if we're in there or out here—I get the overwhelming part, I really do. We can take it at your pace."
The two of you shared a smile. The cliché was always that actions spoke louder than words, and he had just wielded both of them in emphasizing his respect and consideration for you. It was Intak who was making your jitters decrease and your worries lessen. You suddenly focused less on trying to drown out the sounds of people in the building behind you, and instead, on the boy next to you.
When you sat in a moment of silence, you saw his hand inch towards yours on the pavement out of the corner of your eye. Your lips curled upwards in a small smile as you angled your fingers to touch his.
Your eyes met again. "It's okay to hold my hand, you know. I won't break."
His smile was bashful as he laced your fingers together with his and tested your interwoven hands on the sidewalk. He scooted over to you and you met him in the middle, until you could set your hands on your knees, legs and arms pressed together. "You know that I won't judge you for your hardships, whatever they are," he said to you, setting his free palm over your hands to warm them.
"I know," you whispered. You knocked your head against his shoulder affectionately, and he patted your hands in acknowledgment. "I just never know what to do with all of this anxiety and I've never really met anyone who I could trust with them."
Intak took his bottom lip between his teeth. "I'm sorry you've ever felt that way."
"You don't need to apologize. It's not your fault."
"I hope I never make you feel this way, if I can help it," he said to you with a slight pout. "We can learn how to take on your anxieties together, maybe?"
A smile wormed itself onto your face and you leaned your head on his shoulder now. "Stop being so cool."
He laughed, the sound soft, yet brighter than the lights from the surrounding restaurants. "I just care about you." His words warmed you again, and you felt his lips press against the crown of your head.
"I know," you said quietly. "I care about you, too. Thank you."
"You don't have to thank me," he hummed. "Know any good dessert places around here? We can get ice cream and then come back in time to say goodbye?"
It was like he was a mind-reader. You made a comment about a favorite gelato place just down the block, and the two of you wasted no time in dusting your pants and setting off down the street. He never let go of your hand—only letting the pair swing between your bodies as he made you smile again and again and again.

25 : set it all free.
— warning(s): cursing. — short a/n: Y'ALLLLL need to read the last part ;-; omg (i am not gonna have a long author's note for this one bc i might spoil the SECOND LAST chapter accidentally so i'm just putting this here: please reblog if u loved reading hey, cheesecake!) — word count: 503
───── ❝ ❞ ─────
As soon as the clock struck four, you waved your hand goodbye to the junior student who needed help with reviewing and left the library immediately. It was obvious that your time still wasn't adjustable as a lot of younger students, despite your latest controversial reputation on Twitter, still depended on your assistance. — And you knew that it was your priority to help.
Heading to the store, your eyes landed on the boy who focused his gaze on the bakery aisle, puckering his lower lip in search of the cake you always loved — cheesecake. "Intak," you called his name, watching him lift his head up from the many slices of cake displayed in front of him. "Hey..."
And you were taken back to the night you let the tears fall down your face; the fear of no one thinking you've ever loved would think the same because of the time you refused to share... Well, not anymore.
"Y/N.", he uttered your name back as he walked closer to you, looking straight into your eyes with an unreadable gaze yet at the same time, you had a feeling that he wanted to tell you so many things. Instead of opening his mouth to say something – at least a word or two – he pulled you into a tight embrace, resulting in you resting your chin over his shoulder.
Your heart raced faster than ever as you couldn't repress everything you've felt about him anymore. Intak Hwang, the boy you never knew of until now, understood you more than the boy you once chose to love. — But love cannot be forced.
And it only happens in the right time. Could this be the right time?
"I need to tell you something," you mumbled, causing him to let you go as the silence between the two of you had already seeped into your conscience.
'This is it, Y/N. Just tell him how you feel.' Your own voice demanded in the back of your head as you closed your eyes for a while, taking a deep breath.
"What is it?" He asked, his lips curling into a small, pursed smile even if he avoided your gaze.
"These days, a lot has been on my mind lately," you started, taking a pause to think if this was even worth it. "Not a lot actually... It's just you."
The look on his face was priceless – wide eyes and tensed cheeks.
"And I don't know if I'm even worth your time but for sure, you are worth mine," you continued, which only did nothing to him as he stood there, frozen. "Am I... Am I wrong for liking you?" You stammered, losing every bit of your confidence as you couldn't bear staring at his overwhelmed state anymore.
"I don't know," he answered, taking another step closer as his stare finally loosened up from the tension. "But I know I'm right for liking you." Intak welcomed you in his arms again.
"You deserve to be loved, Miss Reads A Lot."
───── ❝ summary ❞ ─────
for two years, you and beomgyu have been the best of friends and later lovers. however, things change after time had been taken away from the two of you ── he began to love someone else and soon turned into someone else.
and whether you like it or not, a not-so-familiar student in the same section finally made the first move...
a very unexpected first move.
