No matter how hard I try I will eventually fall off the edge of a curb into the gutter and my whole body will shudder and panic will momentarily pass through my everything. For just a fraction of an instant, pure fear races through my mind and body so intensely. I know I can share this with just about anyone and they can relate to it and in that moment we're bonded by our experience like some sort of curb-holocaust survivors.
and what do I do?
Chase that feeling and if I do something new and the feel of it starts swelling within me, I will nurture it until I can summon up the full embodiment because each new thing I fell from; every rock I hopped to was newer and more terrifying than the last. I went on like this most all of my life - chasing fear off curbs and stairs, cliffs and airplanes. But, put me on the side of a mountain with no rope up except the one I'm carrying.
Not yet, nope. Fuck that.
I used to cut trees washed out and growing sideways, way up Hwy 50 after rainy flood seasons. I was part of the disaster preparedness and response team (DPRT). Totally just made that acronym up. But, since we received special training for various types of swift water and over-the-edge rescue training and first aid techniques, we should've had a damn acronym. Wait. We did. It was the CCC.
I was on a disaster cleanup near pollock pines in the Sierra Nev above Auburn. Nobody wanted to go up the side of a visibly sliding layer of mud, rocks, and foliage as it slowly slid towards us, coming down the mountain. There was a lot of debris and trees falling in every direction that needed to be removed. Everyone was staring in disbelief at all the hazardous conditions except for me. I started gearing up, smiled, grabbed the humming orange saw, and went up up up that bitch. I would be way up the sides of collapsing muddy mountainsides along the freeway holding a sapling for a reason - I don't know why - in one hand and running a husquevarna power head with the other and it didn't phase me a bit. Okay, heres something nobody notices as they drive along these scenic mountain highways. Just about every vertical or nearly vertical wall has chain link fencing held on with piton spikes like the kind rock climbers use. But not this stretch of wall. It had been viciously removed by cascading mudslides and rockfalls the week prior and now it lay in a wadded up mess at the foot of the wall and was spread halfway across both lanes of highway 50. So. maybe I was a little phased, but jobs like this... i didnt know it until i did it, but they were my dream jobs. Paid for excitement and wilderness. I worked on deforestation plots with 20 to 30 feet deep of tree limbs and detritus under my boots that spanned gorges hundreds of feet deep and cut endless fire lines on the cliffs at the edge of the world with less than 4 hours sleep working 18 hour days and nights. I've jumped out of perfectly good airplanes attached to complete strangers, but i still lose my shit and grab the closest person to me trying not to fall off a 8 inch curb on J st downtown.
