In the 2016/17 season, Hurtado/Khaliavin won Nationals but were not selected to go to Worlds despite all indications that they would be going. So for the Olympic season, the Spanish Fed announced clear criteria ahead of time so no one would be surprised that they also took international results into account. But the way it ended up, the choice was to either 1. Screw over H/K for the second year in a row despite them meeting the criteria as laid out or 2. Screw over the current National Champions. In this situation, I thought sending H/K was probably the fair move, and since the teams were so close in ability and scoring range it was kind of a coinflip anyway.
I get where you're coming from, but I also don't think two wrongs make a right. Zagreb was rigged as hell, and Smart and Diaz won Nationals. I don't know what the right call was, the entire thing was, as is all ice dance, shady as hell.

REMONTAN RAYADOS Y DERROTAN A BRAVOS
IAMO is coaching the Canadian junior champions because Carol and Alma Moir brought them up from the beginning- they’re Ilderton kids who were mediocre novices two years ago. They’re not a team Montreal sent to them, they’re a team the Moirs built from scratch. What I’m saying is that it’s quite obvious Montreal aren’t sending teams to Ontario if they think they’re going to be superstars - they turned CPom down at first when they didn’t look like becoming great. Right now Montreal treats Ontario like a feeder school. Maybe Scott is fine with that! But with Montreal being the established #1 school, if he wants his school to be on par then I think turning top international juniors into top seniors is the way to go - because right now he won’t get established great teams. That ruins Montreal’s business model!
Honestly, none of this sounds even remotely true (aside from the Canadian junior champions are Ilderton kids). There's a close very apparent collaboration between the Montreal and Ontario branches. Obviously Montreal branch is way more established, but the synergy between the schools is obvious and Scott often works with Montreal teams as well. If anything Montreal are doing the right thing by letting Ontario branch settle into things with time (which proves itself with the progress of CPom and to a lesser degree Hensen/Lickers). MIDA is a good example of a new school going way too deep over its head by getting several competitive US teams and faltering with many of them. Only B/S seem to have adjusted well to the school and they came in with Greg already as their coach if I remember correctly. Building a school takes time. Roamin have been coaching ice dance for ages (did is a vampire, you can see him in the k&c with the French team all the way back in 2008 worlds and likely before), Marie France and Partice coached very few teams at the beginning (FB/S, Adria and Sara) and then took on more teams (P/C, H/D, P/I, at some point L/LG) until they took on Tessa and Scott. At 2014 Olympics I.AM were training Hurtado/Diaz only, then in 2018 they had H/D, P/C, TS, L/LG. After 2018 it's when they really exploded and by the time we got to 2022 Olympics they had 11 teams at the Olympics.
I.AM Ontario getting time to grow is not them being "feeder school" and I would expect CPom's success which is hopefully on the horizon will make them bigger, especially post 2026 Olympics when teams are making changes.

Thoughts: this ending has a wonderful sultry feel to it. Well done.
Hurtado/Khaliavin(ESP)
Thoughts: that lift finish is just splendid
Smart/Diaz(ESP)

Fear/Gibson(GBR)
Thoughts: Lilah’s so cute. Makes me almost forget that this is a Lion King program

In 2017 Hurtado/Khaliavin won Nationals and got sent to Euros, but it was announced later that Smart/Diaz would be goong to Worlds because of their Bavarian Trophy scores. So because of outcry, the Fed announced ahead of time that the Olympics would be determined based on Golden Spin and Nationals. The way things ended up playing out they had the choice to either screw over H/K for the second year in the row, or screw over the National Champions for the second year in the row.
basically the Spanish fed has a history of making up new rules each season and making people mad at them 🙃 at least if they announce the criteria ahead of time, each team knows what they’re aiming for, and it doesn’t feel like the goal post was moved mid-season. they could have sent both teams to a Senior B and/or a Challenger and had them compete head to head and added that to Nationals scores this time like they did in 2018 and 2022. that would have been fair and clear
but what they did instead is lame - saying PCS don’t count is quite the choice 💀 weighing scores from a lower level B competition equally with what Olivia and Tim earned at SkAm against C/B, LaLa, L/B, Gr/Pa, and the Taschlers is wild

Wow - so did S/D deserve that Olympic spot? The 2022 Olympics run up made it seem like H/K were really close in terms of skill level
Again, don't quote, this was 5 years ago and my memory of that time is wild, I can give you wild details about Tessa and Scott, because I was so focused on them, and the rest of the dance teams that season are so hazy. Memory is so funny!
I think MF was angry about Zagreb and Nationals. H/K placed higher at Zagreb, and that win mostly came from PCS, without judges propping up H/K and keeping S/D down. Zagreb was a Zhulin panel, and it showed. She was extra pissed at Nationals, because Smart and Diaz won Spanish Nationals, but Hurtado and Khaliavin were still assigned to the Olympics. It was a giant clusterfuck.

Smart/Diaz, Hurtado/Diaz and Hurtado/Khaliavin
The two Spanish teams of Olivia Smart/Adrián Diaz and Sara Hurtado/Kirill Khaliavin are competing for a single Olympic spot and have been going head to head a lot the last few seasons because Spain usually has only one slot at major international competitions. Adding another layer to the rivalry, Sara Hurtado and Adrián Diaz were partners for 7 years until 2015.
An article from the time gives a date for the breakup of their partnership and explains:
"The relationship had worn down a lot. Last season was already very hard [...]" she says. They even resorted to the therapeutic help of psychologists, but they did not avoid the end. "I was the one who took the step. I realized that I was still competing for him because of the projection we had and not because he was happy. And it didn't seem fair. I commented on it, it caught him by surprise at first, but then he understood that it was the best decision for both of [us]"
Om October 18, 2015 they had the conversation where they decided to end their partnership. The transits for that day hit their composite chart like this:
Transit Uranus opposite their composite Sun: Uranus is about sudden change and disruption, as well as freedom, so it's common to see it play a role in charts of breakups when a relationship has run its course. The Sun is like the essence and energy of them together, so Uranus was in challenging aspect to that. This is a slow and relatively long transit, so this had been brewing for a while.
Transit Sun conjunct composite Mercury: this eases communication and facilitates expressing your ideas
Transit Mars and Jupiter conjunct composite Juno: Juno is long term relationships. Juno and Jupiter mythologically were wife and husband with an eventually troubled marriage, so this can be about close connection, but also struggle. Mars is about taking action, and can be about severing or cutting things.
Can't see what was happening more importantly with the angles and houses of their chart. But the composite chart between Sara and Adrián has close hard aspects from Saturn to both Venus and Mars, which can make things emotionally distant or stale over time and show differences in the life direction you each want.
