I told myself I was going to write about my REU often and look how that worked out lmfaooo
It's almost been 2 weeks since I got to UAH, here's a quick list of things that have happened to recap, and then I promise I'll update regularly LOLOL
I got really cool pictures on the plane ride down here
All 3 of my suitemates are trans/enby like myself, and we all get along phenomenally!! I couldn't have asked for better roomies
We had a lotttt of lectures last week on all sorts of topics. I found the one on gravitational astronomy particularly interesting (LIGO just started its 4th observation run, that's super super exciting!)
I got the details of my project!
My title is Active Region Simulation with EBTEL. In a nutshell, I'll be using Enthalpy-Based Thermal Evolution of Loops (EBTEL) simulations to observe differences in heat/density fluctuations in coronal loops with the introduction of nanoflares, which are small scale energy releases. This will be useful in trying to better understand the coronal heating problem - why the heck does the temperature go from a few thousand K at the photosphere to suddenly orders of magnitude higher??? SUPER excited about this project! All three of my mentors are either associated with or work at NASA, so my work amongst the others will directly help them in their projects which is super cool.
My suitemates and I visited the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, and I got lots of artsy photos! (pictures above from here: the piano, the ladybug in the flower, and the walkway over water)
We found a good boba place nearby (SCORE!!) called Leafly!
Tumblr media
good soup.
I found two seeds that had little roots forming inside an apple I ate, so we germinated them and stuck em in some soil. They stood up within a day!
A lot more happened, but this is a pretty decent list of notable things!
I'm super stoked to be here, and I cannot wait to get started on my project!!

Will probably have to cancel my concert and the man whose been flirting with me and wanted to hang out has just ghosted me :)))
Whenever good things happen to me, whenever I have a period of "Oh wow, life is actually great. A man is interested in me that I like back, I'm going to see my favorite band I love so dearly, I get to see my sister and we're going to Huntsville and we'll see the Botanical Garden and the Rocket Center! It'll be great." Life likes to send me a cut at the knees for daring to be positive and happen about my miserable life. My sister has covid. She's had all the shots and the covid she has is terrible. Who fucking knows if it's even covid, probably just a flu, but she's barely eating and not getting enough sleep, so her body isn't healing and I doubt she'll be able to come. Which means I can't go to Huntsville and the South Star festival, because fuck I ain't going to a festival alone. Fuck that. Especially one where theres literally ONLY ONE PERSON I WANT TO SEE! And then theres fucking the guy. The ONE time a man seems to like me back, and he's still not interested enough to pursue. Dude broke his phone. Oh he has a new one now, but hasn't bothered to DL snapchat to talk to me with. I'm just not important enough. :) I'm never important enough to anyone. Both friends were online yesterday. We'd been planning to play Lethal Company together. Nope they made plans to play another game :)))) Ok :)))) I'm just really not important to anyone. Maybe one person, but he's not included in this rant. I love him too much.

Gifts from the Earth: Mystery Solved
Gifts from the Earth: Mystery Solved
Tumblr media
Two weeks ago I shared five images altered in Photoshop and left readers with the task of guessing the original images. Everyone who played along thought they were flowers. That’s not surprising, since most of the images I share on the blog are flowers. However, they were wrong, wrong, wrong!
Well…not exactly. In fact, they were more than half right. Three of the five images were indeed flowers…

anyway alabamanatural dragging sam and dean through every haunted ass place in the state. sloss furnaces. highway 5. old bryce (FUCK old bryce. fuck old bryce). childrens playground. crybaby hollow (just kidding that place isnt haunted its just great for smoking weed at 3am) babygirl we got it all. the sheer amount of demons generated by southern baptist paranoia-invocation ALONE. i also think baby dean and sam going to the space and rocket center is truly the cutest thing i can ever imagine. or them + cas taking jack. well i would explode. and our state parks ROCK cas would love them. and huntsville botanical gardens. jack would love the childrens garden i KNOW this. sam and eileen would frequent lowe mill because sam is like that and eileen would indulge him. dean would go and he would have the most “i am out of my depth so much” expression of all time.

Nature and I through the years
Tumblr media
Image taken by me: Sunset at the Cottage
The Cottage
As far as I can remember back, nature has always played a huge role in my life. My most fondest memories were spent being in the outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and being involved in activities that surrounded me in nature. I owe all this to my parents who took me to our family cottage since I was a newborn, and I had the privilege of literally growing up year after year in my favourite place, the outdoors. I had no idea that this exposure to nature so young would have such a lasting impact and make me the person I am today.
Camping
My mom grew up in the small city of Kenora Ontario, literally on the border of Ontario and Manitoba out in the boonies. She also fell in love with nature at a young age having the bush as her backyard, and kept that love as an adult. It was by her enthusiasm and excitement about being in the outdoors and learning how to enjoy our natural surroundings that got me into camping. My first trip started out small, just going to the Elora conservation area for a weekend, and they have only grown to backcountry camping and portaging trips. After these initial trips, I was hooked and I still can’t wait for the next camping or hiking adventure.

Eco-Studies

Like I said earlier, I couldn’t get enough of nature, and when I found out in grade 11 that I could have class outside, be graded by being outside and while on camping trips through a SHSM in my high school called “Eco-Studies,” I couldn’t contain my excitement. This SHSM taught me the basics of how to enjoy but also respect the nature around us. The program was run through the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG), in Burlington and we had the opportunity of going to the RBG three afternoons each week to have class in the arboretum. Eco-Studies was what introduced me to an out of school program called the “YES Alliance,” YES standing for “young environmental scientists.” Through both Eco-Studies and YES, I had the opportunity to learn about conservation efforts that were taking place in the environment where I lived, as well as be a part of it. We did tree planting, removal of garlic mustard, as well as share our knowledge and passion with younger kids that came to visit.

Camp Widjiitiwin
Some of my fondest memories have been created over the past three summers during my time spent working at Camp Widjiitiwin in Huntsville. Cottaging and camping only lasted so long, but working at a camp allowed me to live up north for over 2 months. I think many will agree with me when I say that being outside in nature is very therapeutic and relaxing. This is what it was for the kids that came to camp each week. We were a partnership camp, bringing in kids who were involved in city programs as in Hamilton, Toronto, Etobicoke, and a few others. Many of the kids came from group homes, as well as no experience being up North (I kid you not, some were scared of the chipmunks). It was really cool to see the transformation the kids had at the end of the week, seeing how being up north really allowed them to relax and be kids instead of being tough city kids. They learned to really appreciate the trees around them, the lake, and the deer that came to greet us in the mornings. I could see them getting the warm fuzzy feeling I do when I look outside at nature and I couldn’t be happier that they now too shared a huge passion of mine.

I am so thankful and truly blessed to have grown up with the opportunities I have to be around nature. Sometimes I think about what my life would be like if I was never introduced to these things or had the passion I do about the outdoors, and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Being in the outdoors has always and forever will be my sense of place.
