He wasn't quite sure if they were fighting fighting, or sparring and having a good time. Grimmjow was really good at looking focused and grumpy between his other, more deranged expressions during their back and forth.

But Shiro was having a good time, so he was willing to say it was something closer to sparring rather than a real fight to the death. It wasn't often he got to let loose a little.

"C'mon, when're you gonna release your sword for me?" He wanted that resurrección and he meant to force it if he had to.

He blocked the next strike of that slender sword, but there was enough power behind it that he had to brace the length of his own much heavier weapon across one forearm. It gave Grimmjow the chance to get in close and he wasn't surprised when, on the backpedal to try to get space enough to counter, his back hit rock. Pinned, he flashed the ex-espada a wide, manic grin full of teeth and an almost giddy excitement.

Reaching up, he stared Grimmjow in the eye as he hooked his fingers into the empty air in front of his face and dragged downward. The mask followed the motion, sliding over his features. The over-eager laugh that bubbled from him turned into a howl with the shift.

“Haaa? You want resurrección and you haven’t even released yer own sword yet?” Like hell is Grimmjow going to give first ground. He already gave first blood (a glancing strike between his eye and the upper cusp of his mask when he’d tried to dodge the great lug of the other’s butcher knife too finely) no way is he giving an inch more without compensation. “Earn it!”

He forces the other back, watches how he moves, how he breathes, forces him around Pantera’s silver until the outcropping vanishes from his periphery and then holds him there just long enough to make him forget that back is not an escape route.

Shiro, like his more shinigami counterpart, looks good when pinned. Enough to make Grimmjow’s mouth water. But funplayfight doesn’t turn to huntkilleat after such a small exchange. The air doesn’t smell enough like the sweaty stink of fear. His lips don’t taste like blood.

He laughs when Shiro does, fangs parting, even as the reiatsu torrent loosens him pin and forces him back, Pantera braced across his front in preparation for a fresh onslaught. Grimmjow could match Shiro for hours like this, trading blows and quick words, but it wouldn’t be enough for either of them, doesn’t feed the violence at their core. So he inaugurates the mask with a cero, blood red and singing.

“Come on!”

As someone who legitimately struggles with a hyperactive prey drive and other Strong Primal Urges I can corroborate this.

Primal/instinctual behaviors are not sexual activity or overly aggressive behavior. They actually look more like this:

Running up the stairs on all fours

Being super protective of your midriff and vulnerable belly

Craving the security of a burrow/den to the point that anxiety attacks make you crawl under the house or stack boxes around yourself

Embarrassing yourself in public by chasing after a mini drone like a cat with a bug

Impromptu gopher stalking, and legit being worried about hurting yourself or the animal because you can't turn off your GET THE THING HUNTKILLEAT mode and have come dangerously close to catching a few

Food hoarding

Getting the impulse to drop to all fours when you Gotta Go Fast

Moving on all fours or flapping like a bird in dreams so much that you've developed an odd sort of muscle memory

Yelping like a dog instead of saying "ow" or any interjection of fright

Being really mindful of territory and getting the heebie-jeebies whenever you get in someone else's car or house

Wiggling your ears when listening or expressing moods

Way too much brainpower focussed on scents

Wiggling your nose when sniffing and actually having a Proper Technique

Constantly reminding yourself that growling and/or hissing is not the right way to tell people to get out of your space

Feeling the urge to join in when the neighborhood dogs are howling with a siren (the awooo effect)

people talk all the time about “primal instincts” and it’s usually about violence or sexual temptations or something, but your humanity comes with a lot of different stuff that we do without really thinking about, that we do without being told to or prompted to

your average human comes pre-installed with instincts to:

Befriend

Tell story

Make Thing

Investigate

Share knowledge

Laugh

Sing

Dance

Empathize with

Create

we are chalk full of survival instincts that revolve around connecting to others (dog-shaped others, robot-shaped, sometimes even plant-shaped) and making things with our hands

your primal instincts are not bathed in blood- they are layered in people telling stories to each other around a fire over and over and putting devices together through trial and error over and over and reaching for someone and something every moment of the way
