i’ll choose for myself next time | ikhwghgia universe, set in the future | polyvessels
Sam drags him out of the house one day, midweek, after they get back from touring.
IV feels the post-tour blues more acutely than any of his partners, prone to listing about the house and slipping into slight depressions. He endures Vessel’s concerned eyes on him with a modicum of ease and promises him that he’s okay. This isn’t the first tour they’ve come back from, and it isn’t the first time IV has felt like this.

But—" II pauses here, and he watches as III turns to stare at his friends outside— "but II and I have already done this for Ves. We could do it for you too, easily." This could end so badly, he thinks, but the worst thing that could happen to him has already happened.

everything i have learned in my lifetime leads back to this Sleep Token: II/III/IV/Vessel
Being on tour is hard, for lack of a better word. The dedication to anonymity, while worthwhile, makes the downtime of touring difficult and different to other bands, who are allowed more leeway in terms of what they can do and where they can go. Nowhere does Vessel feel this more acutely than being stuck in the hotel room after a show.

author headcanons for i know how we got here (give in again) that don't spoil the fic but and might be fun to know
(seriously, go read the fic, which is mostly completed except for an epilogue before you read anything in this post l m a o)
part 1, aka chapters 1-5
chapter 1
did i ever mention that i started writing this fic because iii resonates with me as a Tall Who Looms? and honestly i've had issues in the past with multi-chaptered fic where either i a) lose interest in the fandom or b) get weirded out by demanding readers (y'all have been lovely, no notes), so i really wasn't expecting this fic to be as long as it ended up being. that's not an author headcanon, that's just some context about me as a person lol
i really wanted to introduce iii as someone who felt bright entering iv's life at that moment. all the sensory descriptors prior to them meeting in the coffee shop are supposed to feel invasive and uncomfortable, and then they meet and iv's environment starts to brighten.
when iv asks, "who the fuck are you?" this was initially going to transition into a scene where iv accused iii of being someone that marc sent to mess with him more but i'm really glad i ended up swiveling away from that perspective
there's a universe where iv tells iii no. there's a universe where iv lets iii take him somewhere safe, but it isn't with them. i'm really glad i'm writing in this universe haha
vessel being introduced as ves to iv was a conscious decision to illustrate the distance between iv and the group.
my author note on that chapter stands, it is WILD to use epithets for a character for an entire chapter. the redacted name does not exist, i just copied and pasted the black box into something vaguely name-shaped.
iii is intentionally coded as having adhd. i think adhd lines up really well with this sort of prophet/seer archetype that he has in this story. i've always enjoyed stories where that sort of archetype has Kind of a Bad Time. no i don't care to examine that fact
chapter 2
this entire first section of the fic up to 'he'll be happy to see you' is to really cement the idea that sleep is so far removed from the concept of humans that it can't conceptualize what humans actually are. sleep's an eldritch deity.
there's a really sketchy aspect of starting a soul bond with someone they've just met even if it's the only loophole out of a previous spell. i tried to be very transparent about that fact and intentional with how vessel, ii, and iii feel guilty about it but still allow iv the dignity of his choice, even if it's not really an active choice he can consent to. but it's incredibly sketchy!! we all know it!!
i think it kind of feels like a plot hole that iii remembers more of the dreams than iv does, but the reason for that is that iii is directly connected with a god who encouraged that connection between iii and iv, and iv hasn't practiced magic in so long that he's kind of lost that connection to magic that would have boosted his ability to reach out in dreams. i don't know that i conveyed that properly in the beginning of the story lol
here's a direct quote from the outline for this fic about what vessel does to marc's spell work: "vessel changes the spell that boyfriend cast because it's still active (for some weird reason) so that iv's soul will go to sleep instead of any ol' random deity that's lurking around." it's still active because the weird reason is that iv disappeared/banished marc before he could complete the ritual.
i s2g i read somewhere that a bard ability is to do like an inspiring snack, but i can't find the source so maybe i made it up. ANYWAY vessel feeding them here is the first reference to him essentially being a bard lol.
chapter 3
my initial thought for the dreams that iv had in the fic were that they were going to all be interconnected and slowly reveal exactly what happened when marc tried to kill iv before the story. so everything from "he gets home in the evening." to "what are you doing?" is real events and most everything else is dream.
there's a larger theme about iv's living room versus the living room at the boys' house that i tried to tie into this fic, lmao. your high school english teachers are weeping. iv's living room is supposed to indicate isolation while the boys' living room is supposed to indicate community.
III peers at him nervously. “Is this going somewhere or is this the end of the thought?” this line is a reference to every fic where sleep makes them forget their past lives. i see you, i love you, i hope you clocked the idea that in this universe that IS something sleep COULD do.
it was very important to me to establish that vessel, ii, and iii had a support system in place to contrast how alone iv was at the start of the story.
a part of the magic lore that i don't think i ever really expand explicitly on in this fic is that magic is very communal and universal. so even if you don't do magic, you're still surrounded by magic. at the coffee shop, the door frame was covered in protection charms -- this wouldn't necessarily be just the owners of the shop placing the protection charms, although they certainly would have started it. anyone who liked the coffee shop or felt protected by the coffee shop for whatever reason would have the option to leave their own protection charm and thereby boost the protection around the shop. if you extrapolate that, it's not actual weird that iv would offer up herbs he thinks would be beneficial to the protection of their home; in fact, in some ways it might be expected almost. like, i'm here, you're making me feel safe, here's how i can make you feel safe too. HOWEVER, marc really discouraged iv from using magic, in the same sort of way that he isolated iv from his friends, so iv feels like he stepped out of line in offering them, and ii is mostly just confused as to why iv would feel that way.
equivalent exchange really plays more of a role in this magic system when you aren't connected to a deity. i am perhaps thinking of exploring that more in maybe a spin-off oneshot.
WHO KNEW sam would become such an important character in this fic??? honestly not me, but i needed something to tie together the two locations. also the original plan was to have sam sublet iv's apartment to take care of that loose end, but then i got deep into uk subletting laws and also who would want to read about that anyway???
why can't ii just heal iv and be done with it?? why are there all these rules about who ii can heal and how he can do it?? well because as we eventually find out, ii's not a cleric/healer. also i thought it was more interesting to make it that a) ii can only heal those he's bonded with, b) his healing ability comes directly from sleep and so it's a little wonkier than regular healing would be, and c) because i think it adds depth to the universe as a whole. he can knit back iv's ribs, he can knit back vessel's cut skin, but bruises elude him. hilarious. also something something science developed equally with magic in this universe, so they have things like ibuprofen and cell phones
at this point, aside from ii's healing, sam is the person who does the most magic around iv.
chapter 4
gia is marc's friend, not iv's friend. this is also about the time when i decided that i wanted to expand the universe horizontally, if that makes sense.
paige is the least magically-inclined out of the three women, which is why sam makes her a detect magic necklace.
there's a lot of trauma that surrounds iv and marc and his friends that i'm probably never going to write, but it is there and it does inform a lot of the choices i make with regards to how iv starts to enter into the relationship with vessel, ii, and iii.
sam's relationship with paige, mattie, and lyns is intentionally ambiguous. are they just really good friends? are they all in a relationship? what do you think?
the girls do kidnap sam a lot. that's canon in this fic. they're always like "sam, you're coming with us" and he does.
iii definitely plays things close to the chest, which is what i was trying to convey here. if he's bringing it up willingly, then that means it's really making him feel bad. he has a lot of guilt about not trying harder to find iv, even if it might not have been the right time earlier.
this smut scene is the first smut scene i've ever written and shared with the world l o l. i really like the idea of them imposing a time limit on themselves and then being so desperate they can't even get their pants off about it, ahaha.
III'S VISION man what to even say here. the connection between iv's dream and iii's vision is obviously iv's disemboweled body. the god obviously has some sort of beef with sleep, but at this point in the fic i wasn't sure what is was. this whole vision is what actually happens with marc irl, so like it's happening in real time as iii's seeing it. i also really enjoyed writing the juxtaposition of this unknown god who fills iii with horror versus his eldritch deity who should fill iii with horror also but mostly just provides a sense of comfort in its unknowability. sleep definitely sees the unknown god as being something beneath her, which i hope is conveyed properly. and then, of course, sleep is an eldritch god who doesn't really get humans so of course she would yank iii out of the vision without realizing how traumatic it might be for iii.
chapter 5
this was a hard scene to write with vessel and iv because i know nothing about music production lmao.
iii takes a really center stage in this fic, which i'm not sure was initially intentional, but he is the character i find easiest to write. vessel illuminates more on iii because iii is someone he loves (something something he doesn't love himself as much)
vessel saying that he understands why iv has to be sad for a little while is referencing the fact that vessel also got out of a bad relationship.
iii is stuck in the vision after he wakes up. i chose very intentionally to make the things he says the things he heard in the vision. he's stuck in the vision but he's also trying to convey to his partners what's happening.
vessel essentially uses calm emotions here.
i wanted iii to feel very "locked-in" here. he's stuck in the vision, he can only say the things he heard, but he's also definitely present in his own brain. everything up to the final "keep him safe" is what he heard or asked during the vision.
he finally starts to break out of the vision when they're in the living room. i'm not sure if vessel or ii realize that it takes him that long to get out of it, or if they think that he broke free from it when vessel says "you had a vision, baby." when iii says "ow, my head," he's 100% free from it.
if i ever go back and do a little spot editing in this fic, i'm changing that last sentence in this scene to "III thanks him by lazily patting in his direction." l o l
all this to say that it's never explicitly stated, but iv definitely had a concussion and that's why he doesn't remember yeeting marc out of the dimension.
again, magic is a communal effort, so they need the girls and sam.
very technically iii is using detect thoughts. like with ii's healing, iii can only look deeply in on the thoughts of people who he's bonded with. he can pick up on other people's surface thoughts, though, which i don't think i ever discuss in any depth yet.
why not use this time to have iii be overly suggestive??? why not??
boof, iii sees iv banish marc and also sleep's gift to iv drops. sleep said she was going to give him what he deserved, and what does he deserve? to be able to defend himself.

author headcanons for i know how we got here (give in again) that don't spoil the fic but and might be fun to know
part 2, aka chapters 6-10
chapter 6
pacing was weird in this fic, i needed to move the timeline along, so i kind of bumped some particular points out in quick succession, things that were important to the plot of the fic but didn't necessarily need to be fleshed out more than i did in the fic. i needed readers to know there was an alarm set at iv's apartment, that they were beefing security at the house, that lyns was working with iv on his magic but it wasn't going as well as they hoped, and that there are conversations happening in the story that readers didn't necessarily read explicitly.
vessel is 100% afraid that iv will learn what his abilities are and then be uncomfortable because most of vessel's whole deal is that he can influence other people. you can see how this might be traumatic for someone coming out of an abusive relationship.
i guess i can finally spoil the beans now: ii's a circle of dreams druid and paige is a gloom stalker ranger. that's what paige means when she says their magic is more alike because it's more closely aligned with nature.
"god, i hate it when you're me" implies that paige regularly casts disguise self to look like sam and i find that to be a delightful piece of information.
sam does know exactly what she's talking about.
rockie-talkies! rockie! talkies! ofc rockie-talkies are sending stones.
"he's enchanting" and "yes, an inspiration to us all" are hints about what kind of bard vessel is.
iv definitely has a pattern of behavior where he learns new information or gets overwhelmed and isolates himself. i was going to write a paragraph here about how vessel doesn't just go around influencing people without discrimination - that he's most likely to use his powers to influence at shows, because if people come to their shows it's more likely they've already been touched by sleep and are more open to being influenced by him in an effort to spread sleep's message, but it didn't really do anything for the pacing here.
it's very hard to show readers that iii has visions all the time, but any time iii has his ear tilted up like that, he's probably listening to something only he can hear. i wanted there to be layers to the levels of visions he receives, so there's the stray chatter he listens to, then there's times where it looks like he's watching a scene play out that only he can see, and then there are the visions he gets where he's immersed in the scene. there are definitely shades between those three main areas too.
oof, having a project to do to distract you from anxiety really is a big feel, right?
"II wipes down the glass until no streaks remain." hahahahahaHAHAHAHA
the hug scene serves as both a cute scene and also to have iv start reaching out to the bond when he's confused. he's not sure yet how to process the feelings that he gets from it, but they're all mostly positive feelings so it serves as positive reinforcement
i also wanted to establish more here that even if iv doesn't ultimately choose to have a romantic relationship with vessel, ii, and iii, he's still always going to be loved and supported by them, hence the built-in cuddle buddies line. if he never wants to sleep alone again, that's fine regardless of a relationship status; iii wants him to know that even if their relationship doesn't evolve, they're still bonded and they still will care about his well-being.
this was also about the time that you and i both started to be like "hey, why isn't vessel as present to iv as he could be?" and then answer it with "oh, because he's shy and also because he doesn't automatically think anyone wants his touch" iv is the one to initiate their hug because vessel still doesn't want to be presumptuous here, but also because it gives iv a little bit of agency.
"[...] and wonders if that's something iii's seen too." to be clear, i don't think it's something that iii's seen, but also it's already been established that iii does keep the things he sees close to the chest until he knows for sure so it's a reasonable thing for ii to think about.
i really like the inclusion of all the scenes with the girls and sam lol. it turned out to be an unexpected highlight for me. their friendship makes the story richer, i think. i also wanted to emphasize here that yes, sam does spoil them with artificed gifts, but they also spoil him in their own ways. it would be very easy for the girls to be wrapped up in each other and sort of exclude sam despite his gifts, but they have an equal relationship where they're all important to each other.
iv's insecure, obviously, and testing boundaries here. of course iii is going to affirm his boundaries, whereas marc probably would have made a mean comment and/or violated his boundaries in some way. iv's asking questions because he wants to know what the line is, what's going to be the thing that is asking too much, is it me getting in the way of your relationship? is it me deciding i don't want to be in a relationship? i like the dichotomy of iv thinking he's too much in the same way that iii thinks he's being too much in other parts of the story
the MIRROR!!!! idk guys maybe it's just a mirror
chapter 7
the astral projection scene! aka the scene where i hurt my own feelings. again, i wanted that throughline where every time iv dreams about that night, more things are revealed about what actually happened. this scene starts the same way as the other dream. marc is playing a new role, trying to find iv, but iv is acting out the main strokes of the original scene. he questions what marc is doing, and then their actions going through this scene mirror what actually happened the first time, even as the dialogue is decidedly new. iv's aware that something is wrong in the dream even if he can't figure out what it is yet.
marc is definitely the kind of asshole who would accuse his partner of cheating on him when it's infinitely more likely that he's the one doing the cheating.
i wanted there to be a difference between astral projecting, like marc is doing, and dream walking, which is what ii is doing. marc is able to interact, and hurt, iv through the astral projection, while ii has to wait for iv to interact and touch him before he can pull iv out of the dream.
there's a lot of beating on doors, huh?
ii bops into the dream where it started for iv but he has to wait for iv to interact with him before he can do anything in the dream. i figure that ii probably came in about the time that marc shoved iv to the floor, heard everything that marc insinuated about iv and the boys, and could probably see just the edge of them scuffling.
was it mean to give iv back all the same injuries he started the story with? yes. "baby" is the throughline here - ii calls him that in the dream when he's trying to get iv out and then he says it here in the real world when iv's panicking, because ii's desperate in both situations.
mattie's the better healer of the two. i also wanted mattie to be the one to heal iv here so it feels like his sense of community is widening. his blood on her fingers -- did he bleed the first time? did he clean that up himself the first time or was his hair matted with blood when he met the boys? is that another thing he can't remember? the only new injuries he received in this dream were the fingerprint bruises against his cheeks.
vessel takes her to sam's room, obviously. that's what iv wasn't able to hear. mattie's obviously exhausted and she doesn't want to try the stairs, but luckily sam's been bunking in iii's room and mattie will be able to find comfort there.
what's better than having emotional development in the bathroom because a character doesn't want to shower alone??? nothing. but also, having vessel stop him outside the bathroom to tell him he's not a burden was an intentional choice too. and then being able to have vessel verbalize that he wants not only for iv to be with them but that he wants iv too was great. vessel's starting to realize here that he needs to tell iv more emotional things because iv's always going to doubt his intuition.
he sits on the counter with his BACK TO THE MIRROR
and then WHAT HE DOESN'T NOTICE IS THE HAND PRESSED UP AGAINST THE MIRROR; our common enemy marc was definitely spying on them at this point, he definitely heard the conversation iv and vessel had while iv was in the shower so he knows at this point that there's some sort of bond between all of them and he may or may not realize that iv's injuries have all been healed. honestly, marc's new powers are so new to him that he may not have realized that iv came out of the dream with injuries, but was he spying on them through the mirror in iv's room?? who knows?
"I LET II DO WHATEVER HE WANTS TO ME" what a line, iii, what a line. iii definitely does not start the night out letting vessel big-spoon him, though. if it happens while they're asleep, that's fine, that's cool, that's whatever, but iii always starts nights off wrapped around vessel instead of the other way around. unless ii is with them, in which case they definitely both wrap themselves around ii. that's just some fun cuddle lore for you.
ii can't conceptualize wanting to hurt someone he loves, and that whole moment where he puts his hand on vessel's face in a mirror of what marc did to iv is him trying to wrap his brain around the whole situation.
comfort sex! comfort sex! also the second sex scene i've ever written and shared with the world; hope you enjoyed it. (sobbing)
also let ii bottom, please and thank you. i mean, that's not all the sex they're going to have but it is a little funny that i've managed to have ii receiving each time so far.
VESSEL REPEATS IT BACK BECAUSE IT'S TRUE EVERY TIME. brb sobbing
the friendship bracelets are important.
"my babies are being sweet to each other" = iii definitely knows they're having sex, that's one of his things, he knows things
the friendship bracelet iii gives iv is based off of iv's new stage costume thanks
"i've already talked with lyns" = the first indicator that the group chat popped off during the night
the rabbit hole i went down with regards to "peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold" nursery rhyme here. mattie says "porridge, please" with the same intonation as you would say "peas porridge" in the nursery rhyme.
their group chat does pop off at night way more often than is strictly necessary.
yes, they use food to take care of each other. that's my personal weakness.
vessel and iii sharing food is my roman empire for this fic. i think about it all the time. vessel probably has some undiagnosed arfid, and probably through a lot of trial and error, ii and iii figured out that vessel would eat most reliably if he shared with someone and they didn't make a big deal about it. vessel shares the snack plate at the beginning of the fic with ii, iii, and iv. vessel shares his sandwich with iii when ii prods him to eat something. iii gets a large bowl of oatmeal and then shares it with vessel to make sure he eats something other than just a warm beverage in the morning.
love a deep grounding pressure and so does iv. look at the things they're learning about him!
for the purposes of this fic, hallow protects a space for 24 hours, keeps people from scrying/astral projecting/spying/whatever on the property, keeps people from teleporting to their location, and negates divinatory abilities.
chapter 8
we get a different point of view! i was nervous about doing this, but i think it also works well to illustrate how iv's circle of people on his side is expanding.
marc just looks like a normal guy. that was important to establish. he looks like a normal guy you'd see on the street. normal people can do horrendous things.
again, really playing up the sense of community between these people. they care about each other and that's important.
sometimes i think it should be flipped, that vessel should be the one receiving the visions as sleep's first vessel, but whatever, i like how it ended up a lot. sleep spreads her message through vessel by way of their music. she's always with him. she's definitely a lot gentler on vessel than she is on iii, who she's able to plug into using his divinatory abilities. i think with vessel it's definitely more of a partnership to spread a message and with iii it's more like plugging in a microphone. she obviously cares about all her vessels, but she's still an eldritch god who doesn't really get humans in general. in this moment, iii is the easiest to plug into so she does.
paige ended up being my mouthpiece to describe how fucked up it is that sleep can just use iii like this, tbh. it does bother her when sleep puppets iii like this. and honestly, that's probably why the boys are connected to sleep directly and the rest of them follow sleep but aren't connected in that way.
earlier in the fic mattie says she can communicate/commune with sleep, but it's like using a phone tree (aka divine intervention). some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. that's why lyns and mattie are so surprised when they realize that paige is having a direct conversation with sleep by way of iii. this is uncharted territory, and i wanted it to illustrate how out of character it was for sleep to speak to everyone like that
sleep using iii as a mouthpiece has happened before; it's still traumatizing for all involved tbh. ii falls apart here because it was time for him to fall apart.
another ii healing rule: he can't actually completely heal anything done to them by sleep itself. that's why vessel pulls him away. ii will keep trying even though he can't heal this wound. he can take the edge off, but he can't completely heal where sleep forced multiple different voices through iii's vocal cords.
here's another use of the endearment baby when they're feeling desperate. and then sweetheart to be comforting to iv, who is OBVIOUSLY rattled by the entire situation.
HE'S BEEN DREAMING WITH YOU FOR MONTHS. OF COURSE HE LOVES YOU. heartbreaking. devastating. iv is obviously processing everything in terms of the week he's been with them, but of course iii's had months to fall in love with iv. he's a little bit ahead of the curve here.
vessel uses a lil bardic inspiration here so iv can use it to be brave
iv uses the bond intentionally here! he wants to reassure ii as much as ii is reassuring him that he's not to blame.
"missing something intrinsically/gaping hole" is a call back to the gaping maw in iv's chest from the very first scene lol
and here we have iv acknowledging that he wants to be in a relationship with the three of them!!!!!! i love this scene a whole bunch.
we have sam's pov! love the exposition i'm able to share here about how magic works in this universe. again, magic is a communal event, which is why the layering -- although not a usual occurrence -- of the spells is so effective. and it's not just the layering of paige and mattie's spells, but also what sam layers on as well, the produce flame, to add to the energy of the spells. paige's spell gives them a target of who to keep out specifically, mattie's spell does the protection, and sam's spell powers it up. even vessel's placing of the boundaries of the property helps to amp up the spell work here. and then of course there's sleep who is essentially acting as a switch in the circuit to make sure the spell works as intended.
the bond is magic that comes from the heart. iii definitely said it as a joke to sam but a good joke has a truth to it.
the necklace has four charges of misty step. one of the rings has two charges of burning hands. the taser ring is witch bolt.
chapter 9
whatever movie you think would be most appalling can be the movie vessel chooses. i don't watch that many movies, so idk.
THE SLEEPING SCENE. i dreamed about this scene for so long, i s2g. vessel definitely needs the comfort of having everyone where he can see them, especially after the thing with iii. but also! he gets to sleep next to iv for THE VERY FIRST TIME and as you can see he's very awkward about it even though he has a plan lol
IV PRESSES THE FLAT OF VESSEL'S PALM LOW ON HIS STOMACH i'm dying, please. i need water. he rocks back against his chest. help. can't believe i wrote this yearning
iii is pleased as punch about their positions.
we want you to be close is actually a microsoft word suggestion, thanks microsoft word for the only helpful suggestion you've ever made. the line was originally we want you close.
warmth comes from iv's side of the bond! he's reaching out again! on purpose!
AFTER!!! after this is over, i'll kiss you. after this is over, you can have whatever you want, iv.
iv definitely needs to be grounded into situations. he definitely is very in-his-head in this fic.
ugh i just love this whole scene and interaction.
paige needs a nap, she's a little manic right now.
this initial scene was at first a whole lot of info-dumping, but it fucked with the flow of the story, so i just gloss over it here
again, i'm expanding the story horizontally here. the universe is expanding to include other people, so we feel less trapped in the house. if i had to dnd-class sam's friends, they're definitely more like fighters, monks, rogues.
ii and paige are spit-balling here. is this exactly what happened? maybe, maybe not. this is definitely our first taste of marc as a warlock.
THE MIRRORS!!!! you were right, something was going on with the mirrors, but was it the mirror you expected it to be when you first read the story?
yeah, ves, marc was spying on you then!! you missed the hand below the steamed up mirror
iv, you've gotta start sharing with the class. you simply must.
now we get the info-dump, and it fits WAAAAY better than where i had it initially.
yes, switching graves did happen to be a song reference, lol
my need to overexplain led to a good couple lines about them all talking about pissing, so there's that
i've been trying to end chapters by giving them a goal to work toward lol -- the hallowing, planning a trap. i think it helps to move the pacing along, but you tell me
chapter 10
PHEW WOW here we are. last chapter's commentary truly devolved into me just liveblogging the fic so i'm gonna try to be more on it for this chapter.
yes you might notice that i decided not to expand on them planning a trap here because i gotta be honest it was making my head hurt to think about. so the trap-planning was less important to the actual story because i already knew that marc's timeline wasn't going to mesh up with their timeline of events. there's honestly a lot of sitting around and waiting in this fic already and i didn't want to add to that.
you can't tell me that iii wouldn't be distinctly aware of when the hallowing runs out. the respite from it is obviously enjoyable to him and we already know that his powers are sometimes overwhelming to him but i wanted to make it clear here that he does miss them while at the same time knowing that he was dreading getting them back.
iii said way in the beginning that he would cushion the bond for iv and then i never explained whether that was just for the initial connection or for the entire time that iv's been with him and i kind of liked the idea that iii's been cushioning iv this entire time because iii is scared that the full weight of the bond will scare iv off. again, iv has known them for only about a week at this point; it would be reasonable to assume that could happen. so also assume there's a universe where iv realizes the full extent of the bond and gets freaked out by it because that would be a reasonable reaction
luckily for iii and the boys, iv is desperate for real connection.
i wanted to illustrate here that there are layers to what iii experiences on the regular. iii can hear the stray/surface thoughts of the village near them, so the implication is that they live here because it's a smaller village and not the big city, which could be exponentially more overwhelming to live near as someone who can pick up thoughts from random people
you better believe that iii regularly asks sam to pass along messages that he gets to the mums of the village. sam has no issue telling the mums that the messages are being communicated through iii, but i definitely think that iii is more bashful about it. i figure that iii and the boys are the weirdos who live in the outskirts of the village who sometimes go into town but who definitely lucked out on befriending sam, because all the mums love sam, and so by extension they are fond of the weird men who live in a older house at the edge of town. they probably call iii a sweet boy.
"sure you won't get bored?" iii, the man loves you. this really serves to emphasis how sensitive iii is to rejection. he doesn't want to be too much for his partners. spoiler, he's not too much for them
yes iii is a big ol hypocrite, of course his partners are going to feel bad that they can't help him out more with his powers because they care about him.
did i always know this scene was going to be a blow job? yes. did i know that the blow job scene was going to be preluded by a cock warming scene? no. let me emphasize once again that i have not ever written smut in a fic before this one.
"iii stays where he is, trusting ii to take care of him in this moment" your honor, they're in love.
if i could draw, or if i would want any scene in this fic drawn so far, it would be here with ii's back curved as he leans over iii, dick pressed against his cheek as iii mouths at the base, weight resting on his toes that barely brush the ground, and vessel standing next to them whispering to iii that ii's so close ok thanks for coming to my ted talk bye
idk i just like that iii's like no i'm good i want to jerk off to this later
listen i know you all want me to write vessel's backstory and for right now this is as close as we're gonna get.
BARDIC INSPIRATION it's the small things we do for the people we care about t b h. i also liked figuring out where each of them would feel it; i think i already preestablished that iv feels it in his chest, so then i wanted to make it different for ii and iii. vessel wanting iv to feel brave is a recurring theme in this fic
KISSING THE BACK OF IV'S HAND. ANYTHING YOU WANT, IT'S ALREADY YOURS the yearning, my god.
vessel not hesitating to hold iv here - i wanted to imply that now that vessel's had permission, via the hug when they showed iv his room and the first time they slept next to each other, he's less hesitant to touch iv intimately. it's kind of vessel's way of showing that he trusts iv which i think is probably a big thing for him, but also like this man wants iv. he definitely hates the implication that he did anything that made iv think that he didn't want him as much as the others do because that's not true at all! he's just shy, he's just a baby
i did just realize i have a lot of scenes where they go to sleep and then someone wakes up l m a o. i needed to get iv alone in his bedroom to be honest. it's established already that our boy iv pretty much sticks to long-sleeved shirts, which i guess is kind of a metaphor for how closed off he still is, so his instinct when he's too hot isn't to just take off his shirt, which i'm assuming would thrill the others, so he goes to find another shirt and i give you all emotional whiplash I GUESS
knocking, banging on doors - that's a throughline definitely for when something bad is about to happen. if you remember back to iv's first dream sequence, there's a flash where he's in a forest, so him looking out to the forest is a call back.
not that i made this abundantly clear in the fic, but marc's hands are clear because they're so close to iv's side of the portal. the rest of him is still blurry because he's not crossed through the portal on his side yet. the knocking was creepy enough, but i thought marc spreading his other hand out on the inside of the mirror added an additional layer of creepiness to this scene. he's testing boundaries like he did when vessel and iv were in the bathroom earlier.
it's ironic that bune is using the idea of sleep here to lure iv in and also enough to break iv, however briefly, from the trance he found himself in. i wanted bune to kind of mirror the abusive relationship between marc and iv, so he throws a fit when iv isn't paying attention to him/breaking out of the trance, and then he softens a little when iv's attention is back on his voice.
have i talked about bune so far in this commentary?? i don't think so. he's based on bune from the lesser key of solomon, and his things are that he moves the dead, he'll answer any question posed to him truthfully, and that he'll grant wealth. i was mostly looking for one that would grant wealth as the entire premise of this fic is kind of based on that, but i picked this one because bune = boon = wealth? anything else that's come up in the fic about bune is a 100% me original.
another thing on gods in this story that i don't think i've addressed is that i think the only time they have gendered pronouns is when a character is talking about them. otherwise i try to use it for the gods' pronouns. like, before iv knows sleep, he refers to sleep as it. something something how relational the person is to the god dictates what pronouns are for gods something something, is that anything?
"a tug on the bond produces a direction" initially i was going to have vessel search through the different rooms on the way to iv's room but it was clunky and there's an established ambiguous soul bond to use here
iv resists vessel's attempt to move his head because he's firmly entranced by bune at this point. he's bleeding from the ears because bune's talking directly into his brain and doesn't actually care about the condition of iv's body.
baby as a term of endearment for iv in times of desperation strikes once again
riddle me this: what the fuck is creepier than someone pulling themselves out of a mirror by grabbing onto the frame???? simply nothing.
it made me start a new block, so here's part 2 of chapter 10
the crawling out of the mirror scene is a scene i've been working toward for a WHILE. honestly probably since chapters 3 or 4. it was initially going to be marc crawling out of the television screen because i was working on the assumption that he was using any reflective surface, but when i narrowed it down to just mirrors and introduced the standing mirror in chapter six, it became clearer where the scene was going to happen
so yes, you were right, something WAS up with the mirror and i was gaslighting you all in the comments. there was a moment where that mirror was going to be a red herring and it was going to have come from sleep and be intended for some other magical purpose but i thought that convoluted the connection to sleep so that got scrapped.
the percussive blast is marc firing off an eldritch blast. that it knocks the breath out of his lungs is important because i didn't want to spoil what kind of bard vessel is yet so he couldn't have used any of quote-unquote class features even though i'm strictly using dnd as inspiration and ignoring all game mechanics except for when i didn't ignore them. more on that later
i wanted to make a nod to the fact that they cover themselves in body paint on stage by making sleep's magic manifest on vessel's body as an inky cloudy black pigment, like when they're halfway through the shows and have been sweating
iv starts struggling here because his fear of marc breaks him out of bune's trance
marc uses hunger of hadar here, which kind of opens up a slit to an extraplanar void where things with tentacles live and sucks out all the light. i chose this one because i wanted to highlight what kind of powers bune is granting to marc - way above his previous magical ability and frankly a lot scary.
ii dispels magic here - idk if that would work in a dnd game, like i said, we're ignoring game mechanics
vessel uses hold person on marc, and ii uses mind spike on marc, which does a lil bit of psychic damage but does the more important thing of allowing iii to see through any invisibility and keeps marc from hiding from iii. iii also will be able to know where marc goes for up to an hour, which is how iii is so confident later that they went back to iv's apartment
marc shakes off the hold person and ii casts protection from good and evil on iv when it's clear he's not going to be able to grab him. protection from good and evil makes it so the target can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed so that's obviously something good for iv to have in his arsenal later
the friendship bracelet :( :( :(
an early idea for this fic had iv having iii's sending stone for some reason, but i couldn't ever work out how that would happen so it didn't happen in the fic. i'm very concerned with logic in my writing lmao i don't know if you can tell or not
"that's where they went" which iii knows, once again, because of the mind spike spell.
i think it's been established pretty clearly that iii is a school of divination wizard, but i also established that iii didn't do a lot of magic growing up, so i think (if he were a dnd character) he would have a couple levels of something like fighter; something scrappy like that
i actually did roll a d20 for ii's teleportation spell lol and luckily it worked out
i couldn't have them going to a fight in their pajamas and i wanted to show that sleep is supporting them by putting them in their ritual garments that she's definitely layered protection into.
sam and the girls get spit out by their teleportation spell because one of the girls cast the spell and sam's the only one who's been to iv's apartment. sleep definitely helped them get as close as they did, though

author headcanons for i know how we got here (give in again) that don't spoil the fic but and might be fun to know
part 3, aka chapters 11-14
chapter 11
this chapter went through about four drafts before we ended up here and it's SO MUCH BETTER than it was initially.
i think it would be fun to do a side by side comparison of the first draft to the final product but uh here is not the time nor place and also that's probably not as interesting lol
initially this chapter was going to burst open with vessel and the gang and have it go straight into the action but!! this scene both gives us a break from the tension of the previous chapter and lets us check in with iv.
again, i wanted there to be a throughline between iv's first dream with sleep and this dream sequence, so he comes to in the forest and transitions to the shoreline, both places that briefly show up in the first dream.
sleep explains some things in its own peculiar way while explaining nothing at all, tbh.
but wait, didn't you say that ii cast protection from good and evil on iv before he was pulled through the portal? i mean yes but i don't think sleep is trying to possess, frighten, or charm iv here. it's just trying to communicate with him and the best way for sleep to communicate is through his dreams while he's unconscious. i know irl dreaming while passed out can be a symptom of a specific type of epilepsy, but for the purposes of this fic this isn't the case and sleep uses it as a way to speak to iv.
i've been calling the small voices that also speak to iv the echoes. they echo things that sleep has said, they echo things from the waking world, but they're also able to generate their own speech.
"think of how happy you'll be to see them" > "he'll be so happy to see you" to iii from the start of this fic, aka sleep said the right thing at the wrong time initially because sleep, unlike humans, isn't tethered to time.
if it makes you feel worse, i think iv was probably conscious while he was in the trance in the previous scene. he could do minor things like cover his bleeding ears, as long as he didn't look away from the mirror, and watching marc in the mirror. the flinching was definitely iv flinching every time marc tried to break through the mirror on his side, but he was unable to move away or call for help.
again, protection from good and evil is keeping bune at bay in this moment, but iv is still aware that he's near
iv casts arcane ward here and it activates just as marc opens the door.
i needed marc to be close enough to iv so iv could use the ring sam gave him to cast burning hands. unfortunately, marc is exactly the type of creep who would get that close to iv to keep him where he wants him. if you're picking up on the weird non-con vibes here, that's because they're definitely there.
this scene with marc asking him where he learned that kind of magic went through several iterations. originally originally there was going to be a conversation about how marc told iv not to use magic in the past and how it's a real shame he disobeyed him but it didn't fit in correctly with the first blocking of this scene. then, i left in the part where marc asks him where he learned magic like that and left in the part where iv says, "i don't belong to you" because i thought it still conveyed the same idea, mostly because i think we're all aware of the type of asshole marc is. in the actual chapter they don't really have the conversation but i put back in that marc had told him not to use magic in the past, because i think it illustrates better the mindset and beliefs that marc has about who iv is in relation to him.
spirit shroud, the spell marc uses to demonstrate what new powers he's gotten from bune, slows a target's speed (and does some other stuff that doesn't happen here in this fic) so iv finds it very difficult to move away.
this ending line really demonstrates how much marc has lost the plot, so to speak. "all i had to do was give you up"? what the fuck, man.
this second scene was originally all in iii's perspective and ended differently than it does in the fic. it started different, it ended different, and it had a totally different vibe. it had a funny ending! wild that i had a totally mean aha! moment by draft 4 and changed everything.
small disclaimer, it's really hard to write a) an action scene, b) an action scene with so many people, and c) an action scene with so many people who are also fighting using magic, so i hope you liked the final product as much as i like it. after writing the first draft of this scene, i had a huge moment where i was like "oh my god, this sucks, it doesn't capture what i was trying to portray, it's going to be a huge letdown when people read it for the first time" and i stewed in that for a significant amount of time. drafts 1-3 were in iii's perspective and then i flipped it, on a whim, to ii's perspective and i think honestly that made a difference.
for example, in the first draft, iii only dimension doors vessel to the apartment because i was going to use that as a way to introduce that ii can bop from one shadow to the next (aka, hidden paths, a feature of his circle of dreams druid class) and could use that to travel quickly and because ii being able to use hidden paths was going to be a major point later in the scene. but i ended up scrapping that entire plot line lol.
when iii smacks marc's spell out of the air, that's either an off-label use of foresight or a counterspell, but i haven't really decided which and honestly i don't think it's integral to the story to know which it is!! it's fucking cool is what it is!
iii goading marc here, you're right, is a direct reflection of real life iii yelling at the crowd on stage, how did you know?
"a familiar blue string of light unfurls" that's the mind spike from earlier that's still in effect.
marc casts maddening darkness here and then lyns casts faerie fire on him -- to be clear, idk that this is how faerie fire works in a real dnd game but it's fucking cool so it's happening here. she casts another spell on iv here as well, but you don't know what it is in chapter 11, tee hee!
after he gets stabbed, marc casts eyebite. i tried to stick with spells that fell under the "necromancy" category for marc. that's just some extra flavor for you.
in the first draft, marc did not do as much talking as he does in the final chapter and it was really lacking lol. i also like how it vacillates between marc and the boys and then paige and sam. i think it creates a sense of things are happening and they're happening quickly.
i wanted bune to be really scary and also really gross and i think i achieved that. also, what the fuck did sleep ever do to bune? idk, that's literally the only plot point i didn't try to figure out.
bune puppets marc here because truly that's all he sees marc as. he doesn't want marc, he doesn't really want to give marc powers, but marc is a means to an end.
get it, mattie!!!! i think this is supposed to be kind of like holy aura and then she casts sleep, but to be honest about halfway through writing this i stopped referring to my copious notes on dnd spells and just started doing things that seemed cool. it's my fic, i can do whatever i want.
you can break the sleep spell if you take damage, ergo bune injures marc so he can keep casting spells through his body.
sam!! sam!! sam!!
again, we're doing that thing where we switch from one thing that's happening in the scene (iii pushing iv back) to another thing that's happening during the scene (bune tearing down the wall) to create tension and a quick pace before they merge together to continue the story
originally there was going to be venom in the fic. like, bune was going to spit a venomous substance onto iv and it was going to be narsty.
chapter 11 continued, because apparently there's a character limit per block and tumblr hates me
i wanted to sandwich iv getting impaled between two big godlike moments. i wanted to undersell it in the moment and make you think, "wait, what?" i didn't want you to realize he had been impaled and injured until iv realized he had been impaled and even then, i didn't want to explicitly say the word "impaled"
i think i already established that ii can't heal iii's throat because it was an injury made by sleep, but i'm officially retconning that only injuries made by sleep can't be healed. any injuries made by gods can't be healed by ii, which sucks, but also how would they know that if they've never been in a fight with another god?
actually, if you for whatever reason are in a situation in which you need to staunch the flow of blood in someone's torso area, you should pack the wound with gauze or a t-shirt or other fabric, and then apply pressure. simply applying pressure isn't going to do anything in the long run.
ok ok ok ok this really short scene at the end of the chapter! it's short on purpose. we're back in the forest, bay-bee. "you're losing a lot of blood/you've lost a lot of blood" is from the first dream iv had with sleep. did i know when i wrote that first scene that it would culminate into this? no
yes, parts of this are directly lifted from the first dream. i like the parallelism of it tbh. "[...] like there's someone who's supposed to be sitting just outside his periphery who he can't see when he turns his head because they're not there." in the first dream, iv knows it's sleep who sits just outside his periphery. sleep is missing from this scene in chapter 11 on purpose.
this forest is also familiar to us because we've already read about it in iv's first dream with sleep.
i wasn't originally ever going to share the dreams that iii shared with iv because uh ultimately this is a story about the things iv knows and the things he doesn't know. he knows iii is already in love with him; what he doesn't know is why. but it felt kind of cinematic and right to pick the places that he flashed through in the first dream and transpose them so that ah actually they're places that iv and iii shared together in dreams. i like how it ties everything together; i like how it turns these things and places that were bad into things that are good.
again, tying what sleep said in the first dream back to the current moment. was the gift the powers or was the gift iii and ii and vessel? was the gift both of those things? iv deserves to be able to protect himself but he also deserves to be loved.
"i don't want to die" = "i'm not dead/i didn't die" and then the echoes repeat what sleep said to iv, tying everything back together
i really love this chapter, you guys.
chapter 12
starting out with mattie's pov for the first time in the fic! i wanted her to feel very shocked, but the kind of shock where you know what you have to do and you do it because that's all you CAN DO, you know?
i feel like iii irl with the red body paint probably alludes to something to do with blood so i just incorporated that in the fic here.
the spell lyns casted on iv was death ward! i used it here to kind of bolster the effect of mattie's healing spell, which i think was neat and another example of sort of layering spell work and also that magic in this universe is a communal effort!!
i wanted iv's injury here to have meaning and to leave an impact in the story, which is why it's not a one and done spell-heals-wound situation. gut wounds are serious and i think sometimes that sort of thing gets glossed over in fic so i hope this feels as realistic as possible in a fic where magic is centered lol
i feel like mattie in this fic is a little more stoic so having her have this big emotional moment and then immediately having her hide her face in sam's shoulder was a+. i think she's probably in shock right now but knows that she has a single job to do and that's to get iv stable.
it's really important to iii that iv not wake up in the room he was taken from.
there's something very comforting in having someone who knows you so well. i want the reader to feel like each character knows that they have a good support system lol
i need you to understand for real how hard it was to think of more dreams for iii to share with ii and vessel. it was so hard. for a long time in the draft it was just like DREAM 1, DREAM 2, DREAM 3 etc.
iii continues to blame himself. water is wet.
i have alluded this whole fic to the idea that iii is able to manipulate their soul bond in ways that vessel and ii can't and i finally delivered upon it. i guess since i already broke that seal of iv getting to see the dreams he didn't remember, i figured i could loop all of them into it and just really tug at your heartstrings that way. i always wanted it to show like a progression, like here's how they were in the beginning of the dreams and here's how they were toward the end of the dreams. no wonder iii fell in love with iv, right?
again, really wanted the sense of community to feel very prevalent with sam and the girls taking over the running of the household so that the boys can take care of iv.
hell yes, sleep! sleep definitely won that fight. i haven't decided in the canon of this universe if a god can kill another god or how that works, but sleep definitely came out on top here.
it's time for ii to have his breakdown. he's dealing with his worry by cleaning but i bet it's really hard for him to try and clean iv's room, especially considering it's the place where he couldn't grab onto iv fast enough.
as you know, magic is a communal effort in this universe! i wanted to punctuate that with mattie helping ii complete the hearth spell. so mattie helps him and chooses the herbs that she thinks they need in the moment (a direct contrast to how iv helped earlier in the fic and was mortified to have done so). i specifically highlighted orange blossom because it represents family. mattie totally has a soft, gooey center
and then again with paige, who just effortlessly slips into that role of "my family is hurting, here is a little something i can do to make their lives easier"
of course mattie is a little manipulative here. she's got strong older sister energy if you can't tell. she knew iii wasn't going to bother to try and eat if it was just about him, but telling him that you haven't seen vessel eat recently?? of course iii's gonna jump at the chance to share a sandwich with vessel
this whole kitchen scene was also an excuse for levity because this whole chapter is pretty emotionally rough all things considered.
fun fact this scene was originally written in vessel's pov! i changed it to ii because it flowed better, something something if i had a nickel for every time i changed a scene to ii's perspective, i'd have two nickels
chapter 13
weirdly hard chapter to write tbh i think i noted that in the author's note on the chapter, but it's like, the main plot line has wrapped up, iv's awake, and now it's time to wrap up the emotional plot line.
this first scene in the chapter was not the first scene that i wrote. the second part with mattie in the second scene was actually the first part of this chapter that i wrote. i had a pretty good grasp of how i wanted that to go early on in writing this chapter, but it was the first and last scenes that gave me the most trouble.
idk if you've ever healed from an abdominally-related surgery but i have and the important parts of that that informed my writing here is that the wound has to heal from the inside out otherwise just the top heals and it can cause problems down the road AND they hurt. they really mess up your core. so even though iv is being healed through magic i wanted to illustrate how a wound like that would affect him. he needs help getting up out of bed and walking sucks.
then we get a sweet moment between iii and iv, which we all deserve tbh
big ol' guilt monster that lives in iii's chest rears its ugly head once again.
ii to the rescue, obviously. that man can't stand to see his partners being mean to themselves
HE'LL BE HAPPY TO SEE YOU finally happened, it only took 13 chapters
if it feels like the chapter kind of tonally shifts here, that's because it does and that's because this chapter was a beast to write.
is it surprisingly emotionally mature of him, mattie? is it even emotionally mature of him????? is that just what you think being emotionally mature is?
i want mattie and iv specifically to have a sibling relationship, i think it would be good for both of them tbh
boof, we're still getting painted a picture of what kind of asshole marc was and what kind of hang-ups iv is bringing with him. i don't love the picture it paints tbh!!! honestly i know the broad strokes of the exact sort of asshole marc was because that was definitely something i had to think about so that information could inform how i wrote this story.
iv verbalizing that he feels safe with them is something that can be so personal actually
but mattie, who all are you in a polyamorous relationship with??? WHO ALL? i'm never going to tell you. you're gonna have to decide on your own, dear readers
"sponge bath with sam" was a phrase that would not leave my head. idk.
iv tugs up his shirt here, displays bare skin for the first time on purpose (bare arm out of the shower curtain doesn't count; sorry vessel) and with intent!! it's a big moment in a small sentence tbh.
oof, iv shares that he remembers the dreams: some emotional vulnerability from our boy iv, which iii reacts to by being completely overwhelmed. it's been just him for so long who remembers the dreams.
iv immediately asking if he did something wrong because he hasn't been awake to see how iii's been working himself up throughout this whole situation.
if you're getting soft dom vibes from ii, good, because they're there lol.
once again, i think iii is very adhd-coded in this fic, and i definitely think there's some rejection sensitive dysphoria in his character here too. i do think his anxiety would be largely present in his body language, which was what i was trying to get across here.
but i'm still reinforcing that sense of community with paige and lyns cleaning up iv's bedroom, and showing the little ways in which they take care of the boys.
"iv has always left" ooh boy, there's some unexplored trauma there i guess
if i ever write like a lil one-shot based off this fic, it might be the scene where ii helps iv shower l m a o. you know he was So Respectful and So Aware of iv's boundaries, you just know it.
chapter 14
there was such a gap between this chapter coming out and the last chapter coming out because i was feeling burnt out at work but also because i knew this was going to be like "the last chapter"
obviously there's the epilogue, but i also didn't want this story to end lol
i was also very nervous that the audience was going to be let down that there wasn't necessarily a "sexy" scene between all four of them, but i think i was able to genuinely explain in fic why there was never going to be a sex scene in this chapter. iv's not ready!
anyway, vessel knows iv is healed. iv knows he's healed. iv knows vessel knows he's healed. i think vessel would still be worried about iv despite the fact that everyone knows he's been healed through magic. like vessel said earlier in the fic, the body knows it's healed but the mind is slow to catch up.
cheese on toast. i think at the time that i was writing it, i was craving a good cheese toast lmao. but it also helps to develop these characters to give them little things that feel real -- cheese on toast, friendship bracelets, sam who likes to work on his projects at their house, etc. -- to make them feel fully fleshed out as people.
i think he probably makes enough cheese on toasts for all the people in the house but definitely is very excited when the girls say they already ate hahahaha
i also needed to get sam and the girls out of the house.
this scene, where they talk, was arguably the hardest scene to write in the fic. it went through very many iterations and i think i landed at a place where i'm happy with it.
the scene was originally broken into two different scenes and the part where they're in the living room was originally in ii's perspective, but i just smooshed them together and made it all from iv's perspective because it was a little confusing having ii have to guess where iv's anxiety was coming from.
and of course, iv's worried that he won't be able to jump into a sexual relationship with them right away and that it won't be fair to them -- wild perspective, but sort of understandable when you consider what relationship iv is coming out of, and i really needed there to be a scene where they're like, we don't want you for sex, we want you for you. we love you.
i did waffle on whether it was too much to have them all kiss iv one after the other, but i figured they've been waiting so long to be able to that it was probably the move lol.
did he kiss him in the back garden because it reminded him of the dreams they had in fields? yes
again, we're kind of flipping between two things that happened in the story -- vessel kissing iv and more of the conversation they all had that we didn't necessarily get to see explicitly in the fic. i also wanted to circle back to that repetition that's happened throughout the fic, little callbacks. so when vessel kisses the side of iv's head, it's a promise again.
what does sleep say to iii!!! i gotta know!! idk but i really liked the image of this big unknowable thing that drew them all together settling around them as they all finally get what they want.
ii and iv at the hearth is an obvious parallel to the first time iv joined him at the hearth, but we get to see how much iv's grown and how comfortable and safe he feels. love that for him!!
they nap so much in this fic, lmao. oh well
"oh, definitely," iii continues. "it's like... ii's element. all the trees turn their leaves to give him shade." is definitely iii's equivalent of vessel telling iv in the beginning of the fic that iii can see the future. kind of overstating what the power is because you know they all riff on each other about their powers when given half a chance.
i also wanted to emphasize here that ii is a druid lol. he uses hidden paths here, which is a feature of his dnd class lmao, circle of dreams.
a gift before you knew it was a gift!! a gift you deserved!! sobbing
