Hi! I'm doing a project/paper on fandom and identity; is there a way to see the top ships on AO3 in terms of fics published, or in terms of total hits for the ships (if the latter is possible)?

Hey!  There’s no quick way to get the top ships.  I’ve written some scripts that help find the top fandoms overall, and then gather the numbers from the Sort & Filter sidebar for most popular characters, ships, etc. (but some of them are currently broken, so I can’t quickly run them for you).  There’s no quick way to get total hits for ships; some other folks like @fffinnagain​ have written scripts to scrape all the information for every work, and that’s the only way to do it – it’s very time consuming.  You could much more quickly get the median number of hits for a given ship, or look at how many hits the most popular works for that ship get (I can give further explanation if needed).

I can help a bit by giving you the current list of AO3 fandom tags with over 10K works, and then you can find the top ships for as many of those fandoms as you want to over at fandomstats.org.  (Note that there’s a bunch of overlap/redundancy among some of these.)  Good luck!
