legitimately unwell. hi claire from the future who might b reading this once we either finish hxh or not. im still thinking abt hxh and hs lolll

anyway my master thesis is that the superficial parallels are between dirk-killua and jake-gon while the more substantive parallels are between dirk-gon and jake-killua bc of the trajectory of their story arcs and the takeaway points of each of their characters (dirk-gon as tragic, unable to forgive themselves for real and imagined sins, and convinced of their own power to the point of taking on personal responsibility for any and all harm their loved ones suffer) (jake-killua as more optimistic, heroic, grappling with histories of manipulation, feelings of helplessness in the face of the self destruction of their best friend). that being said. LOL. its fun thinking abt the differences between gon and jake’s respective Explosions of Plot Relevance. like they both have a plot important explosive use of destructive power but jake’s is the heroic defense of someone u care about vs gon’s the tragic self immolation of repentance and revenge for the perceived failure to defend someone u care about.

for some reason thinking abt dirk killua parallels is so much less interesting to me lmao......maybe bc their surface level similarities are actually much more congruent and deeper than the gon jake similarities. dirk and killua are played the same way by their narratives as Competent CoolKid Whos Got a Not So Secret Soft Spot For Their Best Friend(s) with their main difference i think being the aforementioned trajectory of their stories...i think killua is also much more open to being silly and soft, to being vulnerable, and doesnt have manipulativeness as a noted character trait but. watever. like thats less interesting to toss around to me than jake and gons extremely superficial similarities that result from jakes character being a parody of gons character archetype. like Plucky Green Island Boys Who Loveee Adventure! except it becomes very clear very quickly that jake doesnt actually want that and is uncomfortable playing the role expected of that character archetype. gons very insistent on being a protector and savior and is reckless and sincerely enjoys Adventure (tm). jake finds out he much rather enjoys being the protected! whats even MORE interesting to me though is that both of their characters are playing with the expectations of the character archetype. jake much more than gon obviously, but one of the biggest things caa does is take gon’s shounen protag traits that theyve been steadily building up since hunter exam arc and flipping them from admirable to Very Negative. the same recklessness, determination, and feelings of responsibility for his loved ones that were so heroic in the hunter exam arc and while rescuing killua are revealed over each successive arc to be incredibly destructive to both gon and to those around gon, until it reaches its peak in caa. thats its own discussion LOL THAT ILL PROBABLY WRITE UP LMAOOOO but yeah, while gons character is played much more straight than jakes is, its still critical of the archetype and in a very high stakes way (gons actions in caa cost him his nen, nearly his life, and temporarily killua’s companionship). jakes character is played for jokes for a lot of the og comic, but i think it still reveals similar flaws in the archetype as indicative of a brand of destructive mainstream masculinity
