The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (book): the tin woodman, Nick Chopper, carries an ax because he is a woodman who cuts wood for a living (hence the name) and he uses it to cut wood as well as for self defense. :)
The Wizard of Oz (movie 1939): the tin man, Ozian counterpart of Hickory the Farmhand, has an ax because he was using it to cut wood before he rusted, but it’s never really specified that it’s his profession or explained why he carries it around the whole movie.
Wicked the Musical: nobody knows how Boq got an ax and frankly, he probably shouldn’t be allowed around sharp objects unless they are baby proofed for him.

I had a head cannon that Hickory/tin man from the 1939 version of Wizard of Oz did drag just based on his vibes so I looked up “Jack Haley in drag” just to see if anything would come up and lo and behold

What do you think of the theory of Nessa and Dorothy being counterparts?
You know, the theory on the original Wizard of Oz movie, everyone having a counterpart in Oz, except Dorothy, and that would be because she killed her counterpart.
Something about there not being able of existing 2 Dorothys, and that’s why her arrival killed Nessa in the process?
(Also, something about there being a magical in Oz for them not to recognize the counterparts, like how Dorothy only manage to see that after she woke up and saw the Kansa’s counterparts.
Oh, what an interesting theory!
Fiyero already having an established "counter-part" in Hunk, Boq with Hickory, and Lion with Zeke, it would be fascinating to think that Nessa is Dorothy's "other."
What a fascinating thought!

Oc Info Questions: Dorothy Gale (MGM, or book version of you prefer)
FULL NAMES: Dorothy Louise Gale.
NICKNAME(S): None.
FACECLAIM: W.W. Denslow's iconic illustrations:
Tumblr media
Or Judy Garland in the classic movie.
Tumblr media
BIRTH: March 20, 1894 (books) or 1926 (movie).
(I assume the original book takes place in 1900, when it was published. But according to the date on the Munchkin coroner's death certificate for the Wicked Witch of the East, the movie takes place in 1938, when it was filmed - it just looks earlier because the backwater Kansas farm county hasn’t caught up with the rest of the world, while Oz is a non-industrial magic land. I also assume that Baum's Dorothy is six years old in the first book, but movie Dorothy is twelve. For her birthday, I picked the eve of the Spring Equinox because it seems right for such a fresh-faced, innocent girl.)
DEATH: N/A: She lives in Oz now, which means she's immortal, because no one ever dies in Oz as long as the rightful ruler Princess Ozma is on the throne.
(Just because I want to, I'm headcanoning that Oz is a real place in the movie too – the ruby slippers' magic just makes it seem like it was a dream – and that Dorothy will eventually move permanently to Oz and bring Aunt Em and Uncle Henry with her, just like she does in the book series. Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke will come too, and become good friends with their lookalikes, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion.)
ZODIAC SIGN: Pisces.
SEXUALITY: Unknown.
GENDER: Female.
ORIGIN: The state of Kansas, USA.
NATIONALITY: US American (Caucasian).
FAMILY: Henry Gale (uncle), Emily "Em" Gale (aunt), Zebediah "Zeb" Hugson (distant cousin by marriage), William "Bill" Hugson (aunt's brother-in-law), Toto (pet dog), Eureka (pet cat), Billina (pet chicken).
CHARACTERISTICS:
+ Friendly, loving, determined, brave
– Sometimes too dreamy, occasionally rash and thoughtless
WEAPON OF CHOICE: A bucket of water in the Witch's castle.
OTHER PERSONAL INFO: Dorothy is one of the most iconic heroines of both children's literature and Hollywood, and rightfully so. Her blend of sweetness and tenderness with spunk and determination makes her easy for every generation to love and relate to.

ok ok ok so since wicked (2003) sets it within the universe of the wizard of oz (1939) in which oz (according to Auntie Em) is just a dream and "you were there and you were there and you were there" what ramifications does this have in oz? If Professor Marvel is the Wizard and the Wizard is also from "our world", when he leaves Oz are his two souls unified or something? Is Professor Marvel aware of Oz? Is it just a weird dream to him? In one world he is a down on his luck magician and in the other world he is a very successful yet morally corrupt world leader. What about Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke?? Poor Zeke, in the other world he is an anthropomorphic lion! But, he was a cub in Act 1 and then grew up by Act 2, so is he the youngest of all the farm workers??? Yet he looks around the same age if not older. What is the time conversion between Oz and Kansas? How do they manage their two lives?

No because this confirms that Oz and Kansas are still connected in this canon.
This has so many implications
Was Almira (Elphaba’s counterpart) a good person in the past? Is she still one at heart? Did she have a sister who was wheelchair bound?
Did she know Glinda’s counterpart (for storytelling sake, let’s assume she’s Dorothy’s mother) when they were young?
Did they know Hunk and Hickory (Scarecrow and Tin Man’s counterparts) as well? Was Hunk rich at one point? Did Hickory love Glinda’s counterpart? Did he date Nessa’s counterpart?
Was Zeke a kid when this all went down? How does Professor Marvel fit into all this? Is he Almira’s father? Is he the wizard?
Does Dorothy know?
So many questions, so nonexistent answers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wont be shutting up about this for the rest of my life.

Toni Rembe Theatre’s OZ
Experience the enchantment and wonder of "The Wizard of Oz" brought to life in a dazzling musical production at Toni Rembe Theatre. This beloved classic, based on the timeless book by L. Frank Baum, is a feast for the senses with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, accompanied by background music composed by Herbert Stothart.
Under the masterful direction and choreography of Sam Pinkleton, the talented cast takes center stage, delivering sensational performances that will leave you spellbound. Chanel Tilghman shines as Dorothy Gale, capturing the essence of this iconic character with grace and charm. Alongside her are the incredibly talented El Beh as Uncle Henry, Oz Guard, and Coroner, showcasing their versatility by also playing the cello, and Darryl V. Jones as the endearing Tin Man and Hickory.
On some days, Katrina Lauren McGraw mesmerizes as Glinda and Aunt 'Em, while Danny Scheie brings the Scarecrow and Hunk to life with his impeccable comedic timing. Cathleen Ridley roars onto the stage as the Lion and Zeke, captivating the audience with their powerful presence. The wickedness of the Wicked Witch of the West and Miss Gulch is expertly portrayed by Courtney Walsh, leaving a chilling impression.
The supporting cast, including Ezra Reeves, Travis Santell Rowland, Ada Westfall, and Beth Wilmurth, add depth and vibrancy to the production, each displaying their immense talent and contributing to the seamless storytelling. The ensemble, led by Rowland as the dance captain, showcases their remarkable skills, creating visually stunning dance numbers that will leave you breathless.
The creative team behind this extraordinary production has left no detail untouched. The scenic and costume designs by David Zinn transport the audience into the magical land of Oz, while Stacey DeRosier's lighting design adds depth and nuance to each scene. Ursula Kwong-Brown and Danny Erdberg masterfully create a captivating soundscape that immerses the audience in the world of Oz. Swings also include Angel Adedokun, Keiko Shimosato Carreiro, Kunal Prasad, and Ryan Patrick (RP) Welsh.

Special mention must be made of Ada Westfall, who not only provides additional orchestrations but also serves as the music supervisor and assistant music director. Their expertise ensures that the music and melodies resonate beautifully throughout the performance. The dedication and talent of David Moschler as the music director and Leigh Robson-Davis as the associate director further elevate the production to new heights.
Furthermore, the inclusivity and diversity of this production deserve praise. The decision to include LGBTQI actors and actresses in key roles, such as the Wicked Witch, Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow, demonstrates a commitment to embracing and celebrating all identities. By making traditionally binary roles gender-fluid, the production opens its arms to the queer, trans, and non-binary community, fostering a more accepting and inclusive theatrical experience.

With its exceptional cast, imaginative staging, and breathtaking performances, this production is a testament to the enduring magic of one of the world's most beloved stories. This adaptation offers a fresh twist on the beloved classic, captivating audiences of all ages with its unique approach and inclusive casting.
One of the standout features of this production is its scaled-down cast, which creates an intimate atmosphere and allows for a more immersive experience. What sets this rendition apart is the innovative use of common children's toys and party props, transforming the stage into a familiar and magical world that resonates with everyone. From the twister mat to pompoms, an inflatable dinosaur, functional children toy cars and oversized toy houses and even a typewriter. The contemporary adaptation was also improv’d and developed with children in mind. Not naughty but there are some jokes for the older crowds but as the younger peeps say these days… iykyk!

Character ask: Dorothy Gale (The Wizard of Oz)
I answered this ask a while back, but I felt like sharing it again.
Favorite thing about them: She's an all-around likable character; a nice, warm-hearted, relatable every-girl, whose "heroine's journey" is engaging and enjoyable to follow.
Least favorite thing about them: Hmmm... there's not much to dislike about her. Maybe that she tries to run away from home without considering at first how much her aunt and uncle will miss her and worry about her. But since she's just (approximately) a 12-year-old girl and desperate to save her dog's life, it can be excused, especially because she feels so guilty about it later.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I have brown hair.
*I'm sensitive and a bit of a dreamer.
*I love dogs.
Three things I don't have in common with them:
*I've never lived with an aunt and uncle.
*I don't live on a farm.
*I could never manage a long journey on foot in high heels (though maybe if they were magic, I could).
Favorite line:
"Someplace where there isn't any trouble. Do you suppose there is such a place, Toto? There must be. It's not a place you can get to by a boat or a train. It's far, far away. Behind the moon, beyond the rain..."
All the lyrics to "Over the Rainbow."
To Miss Gulch when she comes to take Toto away – a good scene to remember whenever critics accuse the screenwriters of robbing Baum's young heroine of her spunk:
"I won't let you take him! You go away, you....! Oooh, I'll bite you myself! You wicked old witch!"
To the fearsome giant head of the Wizard – more good lines to remember any time a critic labels her a weakling:
"You ought to be ashamed of yourself, frightening him like that when he came for you to help!"
"If you were really great and powerful, you'd keep your promises!"
And of course, the iconic line when she first arrives in Munchkinland:
"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore!"
brOTP: The Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and their real-world equivalents, Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke.
OTP: Safety and happiness.
nOTP: Any of the other characters; they're all too old for her.
Random headcanon: Her parents died in a fire. This explains why fire and smoke are associated both with the Wicked Witch and with the Wizard's initial frightening appearance in her dream.
Unpopular opinion: I don't think she's too much of a damsel in distress or a crybaby. Now, I understand why feminists complain that she's less spunky and no-nonsense than Baum's original Dorothy. But (a) she's older than Baum's Dorothy – it's natural for an adolescent-ish girl to be more emotional than a small child, (b) she's not without her own spunk – she still stands up to people who behave badly or threaten her friends, and even slaps the nose of a lion (not yet knowing that he's a coward) in Toto's defense, (c) Baum's Dorothy cries fairly often too – I don't know where the myth that she hardly ever cries came from, and (d) with all the danger and turmoil she goes through, I think she's entitled to a little terror and a few tears!
Song I associate with them: What else?

I still like the head cannon because I like the idea of Hunk, Hickory and Zeke being like foster parents for Dorothy. Found family stuff is the best.
I love how the first thing Dorothy does when she meets the Tin Man is punch him in the stomach.

iconic quotes from the Chopper siblings:
Nick: “During the year I stood there I had known was the loss of my heart. While I was in love I was the happiest man on earth.”
Hickory: “now I know I have a heart, because it's breaking.”
Boq(book): "People who claim that they are evil are usually no worse than the rest of us. It's people who claim that they're good, or anything better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of."
Boq(musical): *running across stage* “MiSs GaLiNdAaAaAaAaA!!1!!1! MiSs GaLiNdAaAaAaAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!1!1!1!1!!!!!1!!!!!!”

I love how when Dorothy is saying goodbye to her friends before leaving Oz it's Scarecrow who doesn't say a single word because there are no words needed. Thenlook they give each other and their bond throughout the movie say it all.
And waving Toto's little paw saying 'say goodbye Toto' ;;;;; why are these type of scenes even more sad as an adult.
Real talk this movie managed to develop a strong and believable bond between these four characters who have known each other such a short time in the span it had to do so I envy that so much.
Also, giving the movie all the credit for making the scenes with the farmers Hunk, Hickory, and Zeke dropping clear hints that they are the real life counterparts to Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin Man as well as Ms. Gulch being the Wicked Witch. From their dialogue to their body expressions. Esoecially Ray Bolger's rubbery limb movements and kinda goofy, wildly expressive face.
Almost like getting to know these characters before we event meet them. Genius narrative storytelling choice I appreciate even more now.

The Wizard of Fairy Tail (Cast Meme)
Tumblr media
Juvia Lockser as Dorothy (Because they're both innocent, sweet, and you just wanna hug them whenever they cry)
Frosch as Toto (Because they're both adorable and loyal pets)
Gray Fullbuster as the Scarecrow/Hunk (Because they both typically serve as the only sane man in the group)
Gajeel Redfox as the Tim Man/Hickory (Because they're both men associated with metal)
Natsu Dragneel as the Lion/Zeke (Okay so Natsu is not a coward but his Edolas counterpart is)
Kyoka as the Wicked Witch of the West/Miss Gulch (Because they both scare me)
Erza Scarlet as Glinda (Because they're powerful, helpful, and beautiful women)
Jellal Fernandes as the Wizard/Professor Marvel (Because both are good hearted men who are masters of trickery and deceit)
Porlyuscia and Makarov Dreyar as Aunt Em and Uncle Henry (Because they are all cranky but loving elder figures)
