"I Hate You Then I Love You" by Luciano Pavarotti & Celine Dion
I'd like to run away from you But if I were to leave you I would die I'd like to break the chains you put around me And yet I'll never try
No matter what you do you drive me crazy I'd rather be alone But then I know my life would be so empty As soon as you have gone Impossible to live with you But I could never live without you For whatever you do For whatever you do
I never, never, never Want to be in love with anyone but you
You make me sad You make me strong You make me mad You make me long for you You make me long for you
You make me live You make me die You make me laugh You make me cry for you You make me cry for you
I hate you Then I love you Then I love you Then I hate you Then I love you, I love you more For whatever you do I never, never, never Want to be in love with anyone but you
You treat me wrong You treat me right You let me be You make me fight with you I could never live without you
You make me high You bring me down You set me free You hold me bound to you
I hate you Then I love you Then I love you Then I hate you Then I love you more For whatever you do Whatever you do
I never, never, never Want to be in love with anyone but you I never, never, never I never, never, never I never, never, never Want to be in love with anyone but you But you
"I Hate You Then I Love You" is a song sung as a duet between Celine Dion and Luciano Pavarotti. It was first released as a track on Celine Dion's 1997 album Let's Talk About Love.
The song was written by Alberto Testa, Tony Renis and Norman Newell. Luciano Pavarotti unexpectedly teamed up with Celine Dion to sing one of her biggest hits. Pavarotti was one of the most successful opera singers in history and enjoyed a career of more than 50 years.

Conejo Blanco Conejo Rojo  extiende temporada en La Teatrería
Tumblr media

A Review of Celine Dion’s Let’s Talk About Love by Nicholas Forbes
Tumblr media
The first album on my list is from world renowned vocalist, Celine Dion. She’s world renowned for a reason, having the ability to hold a note for more than an hour and possessing a voice that could sink a ship Celine Dion still is very much a beloved singer and has reached a height in her career only a few musicians attained. Selling over 280 million albums worldwide, having the second best selling single by a female artist, six best selling albums back to back (three of them diamond status), and having a residency show becoming one of the bestselling in decades,Celine through the years has proven why she is the superstar that she is. Known as a replacement for Barbra Streisand in the early nineties, she quickly grew out of that mould and created a name for herself. Celine Dion was off to a terrific start in the nineties coming out of her French career strong and ready to take over the American market. She enlisted the help of David Foster and Diane Warren who catapulted her to top of the charts with hits like Because You Loved Me and The Power of Love. By the end of the nineties she was proclaimed “the second best selling female artist” with sales of over 100 million albums in sale and counting.
In discussing Celine’s success, one cannot deny the influence of this album. The album broke sales records and most importantly it dominated the charts. Let’s Talk About Love, being one of her most successful albums, was released in 1997 after her Grammy award winning album Falling Into You. Much of her success is owed to this masterpiece of an album and such is the classically tinged ballad My Heart Will Go On that became a staple on radio in the late nineties. The album sold over 31 million copies worldwide and was her second album to reach diamond status in America selling approximately 10 million copies in the US market alone. Throughout the project, she collaborated with Barbra Streisand, the Bee Gees, Luciano Pavarotti, Carole King, George Martin, Diana King, Brownstone, Corey Hart and her previous producers: David Foster, Ric Wake, Walter Afanasieff, Humberto Gatica and Jim Steinman.
The album showed a progression of her music and the songs were mainly designed to showcase her voice. Containing the standard fifteen tracks, the album varied in musical styles from rock, reggae, R&B, disco to classical music, the album above all was diversified and at times felt non-cohesive but in the end it maintained its charisma.
Track list
The Reason – Carole King
The album starts out with this offering from Carole King (produced by George Martin.) The song begins with a sultry orchestra and 10 seconds in, she delivers the opening line “I figured it out/I was high and low and everything in between/ I was wicked and wild but you know what I mean/till there was you/yes you”.  The song is poignant and is very much a confessional love song where the protagonist declares that her lover is the reason for her sanity. The song is soft rock oriented and builds up as it goes along into bombastic climax showcasing her vocals and range. It makes prominent use of the electric guitar and keeps Celine Dion on her toes as the demanding orchestra never seem to be too much for her. Her voice takes precedence here and right off the bat she reminds her audience why she is compared to the likes of Whitney Houston.
Immortality - Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb & Maurice Gibb
Celine Dion croons through this piece with a sense of maturity that was non-existent in her earlier work. Her vocals are reminiscent of the Bee Gees who nonetheless are responsible for this piece. The song embraces the conception of life, its sordid uncertainties with relations to human emotions and the facets of human desires, lyrically speaking the song heavily expounds on the connection between time and love. Celine really excels through the song though at times her voice seems to be lost in the backing vocals of the Bee Gees. The romantic ballad ends with the line “we don’t say goodbye” suggesting that love is immortal and can outlast the flesh that consumes it.
Tumblr media
Treat Her Like A Lady - Diana King, Andy Marvel, Billy Mann & Celine Dion
This song is heavily influenced by Jamaican music. Written by Diana King and taken off her debut album “Tough Love”. Celine raps throughout the song with a sense of understanding and grit. The lyrics are very conscious and comes across as a warning to both sexes when involved in a manipulative relationship. The song experiments with reggae and slight elements of funk, and tackles issues that were discussed with less tenacity in her earlier works. The song, however, feels misplaced on this album and even so in her catalogue of music. Still one cannot deny the versatility of Celine Dion, even though she is mostly known for her ballads this song reminds us that there are chances to be taken.
Why Oh Why - Marti Sharron & Dan Sembello
This might be Celine Dion’s most R&B-esque song in her entire catalogue. In this piece Celine Dion reflects the sultry inflections of Toni Braxton, she mimics the typical R&B style of vocalising and uses this well-known technique of singing quite well. The sultry low crooning and soulful outbursts of frustration at the climax deeply echoes the pain and embodies the devastating lyrics that scornfully chastises a cheating partner. At times the song itself feels misplaced and unnatural in regards to her known repertoire of songs, and comes across as if she is experimenting with sounds and melodies that may seem foreign to her. But like Treat Her Like A Lady, Celine Dion sounds convincing as any R&B crooner out there and brings home the song with a strong vocal performance. The song alludes to the fact that Celine Dion can indeed sing almost anything.
Tumblr media
Love Is On The Way - Peter Zizzo, Denise Rich & Tina Shafer
The song exercises Celine Dion’s voice in many ways and it is by far one of the most soulful numbers on the album. The song makes good use of the choir and builds up to heart stopping, anointing climax that conjures an excitement that compels even the most resistant. The song like many on the album is cognizant in its message. The lyrics dwells on life and the possibilities of finding love after the storm has passed. Borrowing heavily from gospel, this piece offers Celine Dion a chance to showcase her multi-flavoured vocals and to once again reaffirm her place as one of the most endearing balladeers music has ever heard.
Tell Him – David Foster, Walter Afanasieff & Linda Thompson
On this track Celine sings with her idol Barbara Streisand and she holds her own against the titan vocalist. The song could have gone in a different direction with the two titans clashing and displaying vocal gymnastics with the deed of trying to outdo the other. The song takes a different approach, a less obvious one. Instead of a vocal rivalry between Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand they rely on each other. The song calls on each vocalist to assist the other, the words display a friendship between the two with the passing on of knowledge from one woman to another about the trails of love and taking chances. The song allows each vocalist to compliment the other as the two voices come well together and blend in flawless harmonies.
Where Is The Love – Corey Hart
The production is very poignant and commands an outstanding performance from Celine Dion that did not require a single power note to highlight the anguish the lyrics presented. Very restrained, calm and mellow, the melody, much like the lyrics, serves like a lullaby expressing the right to equality and universal love. Celine Dion remains relaxed and in control of her vocals in this number. In another effort she creates an emotional piece that at times allows her to be emotional.
When I Need You - Albert Hammond & Carole Bayer Sager
A highlight of the album, Celine Dion delivers an emotional sweeping performance and a climax that reinforces her grade as a true vocalist. Being a cover of a well-known Leo Sayer song, Celine Dion makes this number her own. The song opens with Celine Dion whispering sentiments of love and a desire to need someone unconditionally draws the listener to expect something more which she delivers throughout the end of the song. The song mimics the inflections of soft rock and finds Celine at the whims of her emotions channelling her emotions the best way she knows how, through her voice.
Tumblr media
Miles To Go (Before I Sleep) – Corey Hart
Another gem from Corey Hart that adds well to Celine Dion’s catalogue of ballads. This song continues in borrowing the aesthetics from soft rock a genre that Celine Dion seems to be fond of. The song is very conscious in its lyrics and discusses the unlimited boundaries a partner will go for a loved one. The song is a romantic offering and conjures up cliché words such as “every step I take/every breath I take” but nonetheless it is very sentimental and asks one to question the limits taken to secure a loved one.
Us – Billy Pace
A lover wonders why the intimacy with the loved one has disappeared, and Celine Dion’s voice goes through the array of emotions that commands such frustrations. The song comprises a lush orchestra and makes well with Celine Dion’s powerful vocals that ultimately takes centre stage at the end of the song. The song builds to a climax that is sweeping as is touching and resumes to a calmness that offers peace of mind for the protagonist, in other words the release of the frustration that has once bewildered her.
Just A Little Bit Of Love - Maria Christensen, Arnie Roman & Arthur Jacobson
This piece offers the audience a different side to Miss Dion, the song incorporates the sweet effervescence that is normally found on a Donna Summer’s track. This Disco tinged track entices the audience with a barrage of multi-flavoured soulful vocals that could make Aretha Franklin blush with envy. The song capitalises on its disco beat and Dion’s flexible vocals commanding the song’s direction. The song speaks of the immense power and influence of love, concurring that love is the remedy to all of life problems affirming that “Just a little bit of love can turn it around/Just a little bit of love can do it”.
My Heart Will Go On – James Horner & Will Jennings
The song discusses a story of a love that survives through time, distance and solitude; very poignant and by far the best cut from the album. The orchestra, melody, lyrics and the voice of Celine Dion works well together and each element of the song stands out on its own. The flute at the beginning of the song is instantly recognizable around the world. Being the theme song of one of the biggest grossing movies of all time, Celine Dion becomes the voice of the protagonist in the film and channels her despair, her acceptance of the reality of their love and mostly the promise of a reconciliation in the afterlife. The song plays to the strength of Celine Dion and is by far her most classical effort to date.
Tumblr media
I Hate You Then I Love You - Tony Renis, Manuel de Falla, Alberto Testa, Fabio Testa & Norman Newell
Celine Dion takes chances with this piece, stepping into a room with world renowned tenor Luciano Pavarotti and holding her own is quite remarkable. She is never lost in the production and more importantly Pavarotti doesn’t overpower her, like he normally does with his other contemporaries. The magic that belongs to this number is found in the balance between these two vocalists. Celine Dion’s melodiousness and syrupy vocals nonetheless compliments Luciano Pavarotti’s commanding voice effortlessly and brings to life the story of the torn lovers the two singers seem to embody.
Be The Man – David Foster & Junior Miles
Produced by David Foster and delivered with fiery vocals one could only expect from Celine Dion. The song plays to Celine Dion’s strength meticulously being a ballad that voices the same issues balladeers sing of; the plea of a woman to the man she loves, requesting him to be the man strong enough to love and support her. The song may not be the strongest cut from the album but it provides Celine with a familiarity to something that she is mostly known for, and that is saccharine confessional romantic ballads.
Amar Haciendo El Amor – Billy Mann, Denise Rich & Manny Benito
Celine Dion sings in Spanish as beautiful as she sings in English and French. She sings with a frim awareness of the language and shows control in her pronunciation. She navigates throughout the song with grace and slight precision and it aids her well in the end. The song describes the deep feelings awakening from one lover to another, and that those feelings erupt from a place of deep sincerity and reveal themselves slowly. The song overall showcases Celine’s versatility much like previous numbers on the album and is performed in a fashion that embodies a singer well versed in the genre of Latin Music.
To Love You More - David Foster & Junior Miles
Lesser known talents would have surrendered to the production of this piece. The song written by David Foster gives Celine Dion a chance to grow and literally test her strength as a vocalist. The violin played by world renown Japanese violinist Taro Hakase highlights the beauty of the song and adds a hint of complexity to the production on this piece. The song could easily be one of her more memorable moments in her entire career, vocally speaking.
Let’s Talk About Love – Bryan Adams, Jean-Jacques Goldman & Elliot Kennedy
Celine Dion closes the album with this piece and rightfully so. The song sends a message of universal love with the medium that transcends across all borders, barriers and colour and that is music. She employs a children’s choir at the most poignant moment in the song as a ploy to exemplify the message and wisely she enforces a choir at the end of the song to fully vocalise the need for such a necessity as love, acceptance, equality and peace. The song compliments Celine Dion’s voice and shows her crooning through the production with a sense of being a polished vocalist and a seasoned performer. The song deals with a very hearty issue and Celine Dion delivered it the best way she knew how.
