International Human Solidarity Day

Today, we celebrate the strength of unity and the profound impact of standing together in the face of challenges. As a refugee, I’ve experienced how acts of solidarity can transform lives and inspire hope.

From those who ensure access to basic needs to allies advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and friends who step in during critical moments, I am reminded that solidarity transcends borders, beliefs, and identities.

This day is also a call to celebrate diversity and amplify the voices of marginalized communities. Being part of the LGBTQ+ community and working with incredible allies has taught me the true meaning of inclusion. Together, we are building bridges that foster understanding and break down barriers.

Let us continue to stand united in our shared humanity, spreading compassion, equality, and hope for a better world.

International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD), observed on December 20, is an international annual unity day of the United Nations and its member states. Its main goal is to recognize the universal value of solidarity by making member states aware of global objectives and initiatives to reduce poverty and to formulate and share poverty reduction strategies of independent nations around the world. IHSD is promoted by the World Solidarity Fund and United Nations Development Programme, which are focused on achieving goals set for worldwide poverty eradication. An individual can participate or celebrate the day either by contributing to education or helping the poor or physically or mentally disabled. Governments are instead encouraged to respond to poverty and other social barriers through the Sustainable Development Goals.
