always yours
Pairing: Seth MacFarlane x Reader
Summary: You give Seth something he didn't know he wanted.
Warnings: childbirth, fluff, insinuations to smut, csection, near death experience
A/N: I based the c section section off of what happened to my mom, although I didn't add the part of the baby (my brother) falling back inside her and almost dying as well LMAO
always yours
As you stared down at the small stick in your hand, you had no idea what to do.
You had been working as Seth’s live in personal assistant for two, almost three, years now, and you had just gotten back from visiting home for the holidays. While you were there, you went to a party your old friend group was throwing, and you ended up hooking up with your ex.
Your ex who, had told you on numerous occasions, that he didn't want kids, and if you got pregnant, he would leave you.
You knew you didn't want to tell him. He had insinuated in the past that he didn't want kids, so why should you tell him if you knew it meant you'd be painted as a bad person?
Your next thought was Seth. You knew you couldn't raise the baby here, it was Seth’s house, not yours. You may have had your own bedroom and ensuite bathroom, it was still under his roof.
You had decided to not go with him on set for the past few days as you were feeling sick, and he demanded you stay home.
‘Seth, I’m fine!’ You remember the conversation going.
He shook his head at you. ‘Y/N, you've been up all night throwing up. You look absolutely exhausted, and you can barely keep down water. You need rest,’
You let out a dramatic sigh. ‘I’m feeling better, though,’ You retorted, as you watched him lay a blanket over your shaking body on the couch.
He shook his head once more, before kneeling beside you. His hand came to rest into your hair, something he always did when you were upset or agitated.
‘No. Just rest. I’ll be fine without you for a few days, I promise love.’ He whispered, his brown eyes looking into yours.
You nodded, your eyes welling up with tears. ‘I’m sorry,’
Seth gave you a sad smile, before sitting next to you.
‘Don’t be. Everyone gets sick. You probably caught something at home or on the plane. Don’t worry about it, just relax, okay?’
You nodded, and drifted off to sleep to the feeling of him running his hands through your hair, and him humming a Frank Sinatra tune that you couldn't name at that moment.
You knew he wouldn't be mad that you were pregnant, but you also didn't know what his exact reaction would be.
You picked up your phone, and dialled his number, knowing he’d almost be done for the day. You wanted to give him a heads up so he could mentally prepare for this kind of news.
“Hey, how are you feeling?” You heard Seth say in a soft voice on the other end of the phone once he answered.
“Um, a little better,” You said, in a shaky voice which you knew he’d be able to recognize instantly. He had always been able to sense your emotions well, and that was something you were grateful for.
“What’s wrong?” He questioned. “Have you gotten more sick?”
“N-no, it’s nothing like that, I just need to talk to you about something when you get home,” You said, and you felt a tear fall from your eye, before you sniffled.
“Okay. Just calm down okay? Everything is going to be fine,” He reassured you, and you heard his Tesla starting up. “I’m 20 minutes away still. Why don’t you go lay down, and I’ll come and see you when I get home?”
“O-okay,” You stuttered.
“Okay. I’ll see you soon,” He said in a gentle voice, which made you warm on the inside, knowing that he cares.
“Okay, bye,”
He said his goodbyes, and you made your way from your bathroom, and laid down in your bed, the small test still grasped in your hand.
You had just drifted off to sleep, when your bedroom door opened, and Seth stepped in.
He took a seat on your bed, and brushed a hand through your hair to wake you up.
You opened your eyes groggily, and gave him a small smile, before sitting up.
“What’s wrong?” He asked, giving you a comforting look.
You didn't know how to just come out and say it, so you passed the pregnancy test to him, before dragging your knees close to your chest to hide your face.
He didn't say anything, but leaned over, and wrapped his arms around you.
“Everything is going to be fine, I promise Y/N.” He whispered. You immediately started to sob.
Seth pulled you into his arms further with zero hesitation.
“I’ll look for an apartment to move into,” You whispered, and Seth pulled back in shock.
“What are you talking about, Y/N?” He questioned. “Why would you look for an apartment?” You looked up at him. “This is your house, I can't expect you to allow me to raise my child here.”
Seth scoffed, and fully pulled you into his lap.
“I want you to stay. Don’t worry about moving, you're fine here,” He said. He had rested his head atop yours and began to rock you back and forth gently.
You nodded. “Thank you,”
Over the next few months as your belly grew, so did your bond with Seth. He helped you tell your parents, who were supportive. He came with you to every appointment, was there for every new milestone, and was the first person to feel your baby kick.
While your bond with him grew, so did your feelings for him. You had always had a crush on him, but you managed to keep it at a manageable level. However with your hormones, you were barely keeping it under wraps, especially now that he loved to touch your bump, and sing to the baby.
At 35 weeks, you had begun to sleep in his bed, so he could be right with you when your water broke. This didn't help with your hormones, especially because you would often wake up in the middle of the night to him singing and talking quietly to your baby.
This morning, was no different. You woke up at 6 am, to Seth saying good morning to your baby, before crawling out of bed and into the bathroom.
You got up as well, and headed down stairs to make coffee and breakfast. While you two had grown closer, you were still his assistant.
You had just made it out of the bedroom when Hank, Seth’s cat, ran up to you and rubbed his face against your swollen legs.
“Hi, Hankie baby,” You whispered to him, before continuing down the stairs, with Hank trailing not too far behind.
You had just made his coffee and placed his breakfast on the table when he entered the kitchen.
“Good morning,” He said, to which you returned. “How are you feeling?”
You smiled at him, while drinking your mug of decaf coffee. “A little tired, but I’ll be fine,” You said. He nodded.
“I’m not going to set today, I’ll just be in the office, so let me know if you need anything, okay?” He said.
You grabbed your plate and took a seat at the table. “Okay. What do you need me to do today?”
“All I need you to do is to call set design and get an estimate for the quarters,” He said. Since you had hit 35 weeks, he had been lowering your work load (not that you had a huge work load to begin with with him), and you were grateful for it.
Especially today. You sensed something was going to start happening, since Hank hadn't left you alone since you walked out of the bedroom.
You didn't want to worry Seth though, so you kept it to yourself.
“Okay, perfect, I’ll call them after breakfast.”
The two of you ate your breakfasts and Seth headed up to his office, while you headed to your bedroom.
You gave the set designers a quick call, and was about to go and let Seth know the time frame the you felt it.
A sharp cramp, running across your stomach.
It was only the first one, so you pushed it out of your mind, and continued on with your day.
A few hours later, you had already had 4 contractions, and had decided you needed to pack your hospital bag.
You did that, and continued nesting around the house, while also making sure Seth had food and water while he worked.
You were about to bring him his dinner when you felt your water breaking.
“You've gotta be fucking kidding me,” You said to yourself, Seth’s dinner in hand.
You ran to the laundry room to grab some new pants out of the dryer. You got changed and continued to Seth’s office.
You walked in, and he was still working.
“Here’s your dinner,” You said, before another contraction hit you.
Seth immediately recognized what was happening, and pulled you into a hug, his hands running up and down your back.
“Breathe,” He whispered. Not too much longer, the contraction subsided.
“Are you in labor?” He asked, as he pulled back slightly.
You nodded, and he immediately guided you to sit in the chair he was once occupying.
“M-my water broke a few minutes ago, and I’ve gotten a few contractions today, but they haven't been consistent.” You said. He kneeled in front of you, and ran his hands on your legs gently.
“Okay.” He said, with a soothing smile on his face. He reached behind him for his phone.
“Tell me when the next one starts, okay?” He whispered, and you nodded.
A few minutes later, it hit you again. “I’m having one,”
Seth nodded and hit start on the timer before grasping your hand.
It passed, and Seth told you it lasted about a minute.
You nodded. “I think it’s time to go to the hospital,” You whimpered, tears welling up in your eyes. You felt close to having a break down, but desperately tried to hold it together.
Seth stood up, and helped you up. He noticed the fear on your face, and cupped your jaw in his hand.
“What’s wrong?” He asked.
You broke down.
“I-I’m terrified, Seth,” You said, and he immediately pulled you to his chest.
“You're going to be okay, Y/N. I’m not going to leave your side, I promise.” You nodded into his shoulder, and he led you out of the office. He sat you on the couch.
He called your doctor, and she advised that you go to the hospital.
“M-my hospital bag, it’s on my bed,” You whimpered out. He nodded, and ran up the stairs to grab it. You sensed that he as nervous as well, and promised yourself you’d keep him calm.
He came back down the stairs with your bag, and helped you into the car.
He kept his eyes on you while he drives, letting you grasp his hand whenever you had a contraction.
You made it to the hospital a few minutes later, and Seth helped you out and into reception.
“Hello, I’m looking for the maternity ward,” He said, his hand never leaving yours.
“Okay, it’s on the second floor,” The nurse said, as she stood up to grab you a wheelchair. You sat down, and Seth thanked her before wheeling you towards the elevators.
Soon, you were in a hospital gown, in bed, with Seth by your side.
Your doctor came in not too much later and checked you.
“Okay, Y/N, you're 8 centimetres dilated, so you're close.” She said.
“O-Okay,” You whimpered. The doctor left the room to give you and Seth some privacy.
He sat down on the bed next to you, and offered your water with a straw to you.
“Are you okay?” He asked, as you took a sip. You swallowed the water and nodded.
“It hurts a lot,” You whined out, and Seth ran a hand through your hair.
“I know, sweet girl, but it’ll be over soon and you’ll have your little baby in your arms,” He whispered, and you smiled. You reached out for his hand, and he took it.
For the next hour, Seth attempted to distract you, which worked to an extent.
The doctor came back in and announced you were at 10 centimetres, and were ready to push.
Your hand grasped Seth’s even tighter. “Please, don't leave,” You begged him.
He smiled, and bent down to press a kiss to your forehead.”I'm not going anywhere, angel,”
You nodded, and he stood by your head, and held your hand.
You began to push and he encouraged you the whole time. His hand never left yours, no matter how hard you squeezed.
You had pushed for what felt like hours, when the doctors announced that you would need a c-section, because your baby’s heart rate kept dropping.
You immediately started to freak out, but Seth reassures you.
“Y/N, angel,” He said, taking your face in his hands. “Everything is going to be fine! It’s okay,”
You looked in his eyes and felt yourself instantly calm.
“Don’t leave,” You whispered, and he nodded.
“Wouldn't dream of it, angel.”
A team of nurses came in, and prepped you for surgery. The surgeon walked up to Seth.
“Are you her partner?” He asked, and Seth immediately nodded. “Yes I am.” Your heart dropped when he answered, but deep down thought it was only because you wanted him to stay with you.
The surgeon handed him some scrubs. “Here are your scrubs, and Melissa here,” He motioned to one of the nurses. “Will help you scrub up, and then you’ll meet her in the OR.”
Seth nodded, and turned to you, just before the wheeled you out of the room.
“I’ll be there really soon, okay? You’ll be okay,” He said, as he leaned down. He pressed a kiss to your forehead. You waved goodbye, and was wheeled away.
When you saw Seth again, you were on the operating table, and your stomach had been cut open already.
He rushed to your side, and held your hand.
“How are you feeling?” He asked, taking a seat next to you.
You smiled weakly at him.
“I’m okay,” You said.”Thank you for everything, you're the best.”
Seth lifted his hand and placed it onto your forehead. “No, you are. You went through your pregnancy with out the father of your child. You refused to take maternity leave, and you went into labor while working for me. You have flown all over the country while pregnant, and so many more things. Now, you're sitting here, cut open like a side of beef, waiting for your little baby. You, are the best.” He whispered, his thumb tracing a line on your forehead.
A few moments later a small cry pierced the air.
“Congratulations, it’s a girl!” You heard the doctor announce, before you felt tears pour down your face.
She was wrapped up, and brought over to you. Your arms were strapped to the table, so you couldn't hold her, but Seth took her gently from the nurse and brought her close so you could see her and press a kiss to her small cheek.
The surgeon came up to Seth once more.
“We’re going to have you follow Nurse Melissa with the baby into her recovery room, just so we can stitch her up, okay?” Seth nodded, and turned to you, your daughter still safe in his arms.
“I’ll see you soon, okay?” He said, and leaned down so you could say goodbye to your daughter.
You kissed your daughter once more, before watching Seth walk out with her.
Seth walked into the recovery room, and took a seat with her.
He gazed down at her, and noticed just how much she resembled you.
“Hey, baby girl,” He whispered. “Your mama will be here soon, okay?”
He watched as her eyes fluttered open, and gazed up at him.
Seth began to talk to her, and soon realized it had been more than an hour, and you still weren't back.
His mind began to race. Did something go wrong? If it did, who was your daughter supposed to go to? But, before he could panic too much, you were wheeled in.
“She began to haemorrhage, but we got her stabilized. She’s all stitched up, and perfectly fine. She’s on some pretty heavy sedatives though, so it’ll be a few hours before she wakes up,” The doctors explained.
The doctor continued talking, but Seth didn't absorb any of it, he was only focused on your still sleeping form.
He had almost lost you. He had almost lost the woman he loved, that he had loved since the morning after you moved in.
As he sat next to your bed, with your sleeping daughter still in his arms, he remembered that morning.
You were in the kitchen, in a One Direction concert shirt, and grey sweatpants, making his breakfast at the stove. He had seen you stood there many times before, but this time you were yourself. Not his assistant, you were Y/N. And he loved it.
Thats when he knew.
He kept switching his gaze between you and your daughter, admiring your two.
Your daughters eyes fluttered open to look at Seth again.
He smiled at her warmly.
“You know, I love your mother a lot. I’ve loved her for years, and I've never told her. I don't know why. There have been so many chances to tell her, and I never did.” A smile spread across his face as the 2 hour old baby seemed to be hanging on to his every word. “Everything used to be so blurry when it came to her, and to my feelings for her, but now you're here, it’s all so clear. I love her. Hell, you're not even mine, and I already love you like you are,”
He paused to press a kiss to her forehead before continuing.
“As soon as she wakes up, I’ll tell her,” His gaze drifted over to your sleeping form. “If she’ll let me, I’ll be the best daddy I can to you. I promise.” She had drifted back off to sleep, and Seth laid her in the bassinet.
He sat on the bed, and took your hand in his. You woke up a few moments later.
He gave you a soft smile. “How are you feeling?” He asked.
You shifted slightly and grimaced. “Sore,” Seth chuckled.
“Is my daughter okay?” Seth nodded, and pulled the bassinet closer to the bed so you could see her.
“She’s perfect. She hasn't cried at all. Such a perfect angel,”
You sniffled, feeling emotional as you looked down in admiration at your beautiful baby girl.
“She really is,” You whispered, lifting your free hand to stroke her cheek.
Seth cleared his throat, and looked at you.
“I need to tell you something,” He said, and you nodded, encouraging him to continue. “I’m in love with you. I have been for years, but I never told you, and I have no idea why. I understand if you don't feel the same, but it's been eating me up ever since I walked out of the room with her.” He glanced over at the baby once more, before looking at you apprehensively.
You just smiled, and squeezed his hand. “I love you too, Seth. So much.”
A huge smile spread across his face, and he moved closer. He pressed a gentle kiss to your lips, before your daughter began fussing.
Seth lifted her up, and helped her latch, before sitting back down once more.
As he looked at you feed her, a question came to mind.
“What are you going to call her?” He whispered, rubbing her forehead with his thumb.
You smiled before pressing a kiss to his lips once more.
“Violet Anne MacFarlane,” You suggested, and his face broke out into a huge smile.
“A-are you sure?” He asked, and you nodded.
“She’s always been yours. Biology can go fuck itself,” You said, and he pressed another kiss to your lips.
“Thank you,” He said, looking up at you, the woman he loves, and his daughter.

How to Manage Time Wisely? | Lists to Make to Stay Organized
Wondering what you can do in 24 hours to organize your life?
Actually a lot. There are several practical steps that you can start taking from today.
This organization is surely important for a healthy lifestyle.
Previously, whenever my goals for the day were left done, I used to wish for more than 24 hours in a day.
It was very late that I realized that the inclusion and exclusion of small simple tasks can actually make the wish come true.
I still have 24 hours a day, but guess what changed? My activities.
No matter how proficient or intelligent one is, but if one lacks organizational skill then one will not reach favorable and optimum outcomes.
The first step which you can take towards self-improvement is becoming mindful of time management. I am now more mindful and you can be too.
Literally, I used to be a night owl. Now I do not even need an alarm for waking up at 4.
What changed. I learned. I learnt from the experts.
I invested in myself for a better life.
I have taken several audio books, best e-books and courses.
I loved the investments because when I see myself now: I have just more time for everything.
I used to rant that why God has just given 24 hours in a day.
My to-do list always used to get shifted on the next day.
And most importantly I was compromising fun in my life.
If you are asking yourself that why you need to become more productive then the answer is : Because you deserve success in your career, and health in your lovely relationships.
If you want to live more intentionally then do check this productivity bundle.
Back to this blogpost.
So let’s dive in how to manage time wisely:
PS : Don’t forget to grab the freebie at the end of post, specially crafted for you !
1# Planning your day
You need to plan but do not plan excessively.
Do not overwhelm yourself with the large endless to-do list else you will be forced to sleep with an awful mood.
Many people love to Plan your day the night before while some prefer right after waking up.
I mostly do it the night before so that when I hit the bed, my mind could get rid of the planning mode.
But the choice is completely yours.
Create Separate a List For Future and Today Tasks Maintain two different to-do list
There should be a grand list where you can dump every goal you need to accomplish
Drill in your head that you are not a superhero so PRIORITIZE
Go narrower with at least 3 milestones in today’s to-do list (Plan maximum of three large tasks; these are highly prioritized tasks)
Make a not-to-do list. Spare a paper for this so you do not divert (an extremely powerful strategy which I use)
Make plan B which can be used if emergency strikes (for unexpected events)
#2 Making quick decisions
Organize your life by becoming a pro at decision making
Weight the pros/con and compare the situations
Set a deadline for making a final decision else you will swing between I don’t know and I am not sure loop
Don’t second guess your decision.
Own it
#3 Tracking
Track How You Are Spending Your Time (how much on your goals, family, hobbies, and entertainment)
#4 No multitasking
Don’t multitask. Conquer one milestone at a time, as multitasking is your enemy
#5 Rising Early at 5 pm
To become productive you need to wake up early in the morning
Conquer your mornings by accomplishing bigger goals in the first half
Do not check your emails or swipe your phone at least in the first half of the morning (This can be challenging but worth a try else your priorities will get hindered)
Keep the most trivial tasks for the afternoon- this is the best utilization of such tasks
#6 Taking a break
Self-organization is incomplete if you will not take effective breaks.
Give yourself time to relax for maintaining excitement and enthusiasm
Restore the joy while working through frequent breaks.
At least give yourself 15 minutes celebration time after completing each milestone set for the day
After the 15 minutes, ride onto another task with a smile plastered on your face (yes the smile boost the excitement)
#7 Clearing your head
Clear your mind to maximize your brainpower and creativity
The best and effective way to clear your head is through journaling.
USE my Triple G technique (a bit of self-promotion! Please say I deserve this)
#8 Practice meditation
Start your day with something that you have never done before (for boosting creativity- maybe start it with a dance)
#9 Reviewing your work
When the clock strikes 12, it is time for reviewing your progress
Review so that you can adjust. Adjustment is vital for maximizing the results for the day
This strategy is also a great way to improve your task-management skill.
Analyze whether you’re headed in the right direction or not
Go into a self-reflection
#10 Merge the task together
Doubling up the similar duties and task of the day saves a ton of time and make you more organized no matter how they are listed on the priority list
Eg: Merge all the outdoor tasks together whenever you could.
Change your mindset by taking the responsibility
Drill in your head that you are responsible for every task you perform.
You actions = blame on yourself
Remember that with every action you are writing your destiny.
You are not a victim but a creator.
Develop a growth mindset by thinking that if you’re failing 10 times today then that is not in essence a failure.
#11 Find A Hobby
Another way to remain organized and productive is by finding a hobby.
Try replacing a bit of your time spent on social media with the hobby
Try writing, reading, painting, sculpting or photography, etc (hobbies boost your creative neurons helping you maintain the overall productivity)
Hobbies can help you find peace.
They are a form of meditation that plays a huge role in organizing your overall life.
This relaxing strategy can be given 15 minutes a day at least for getting your mental health back on track.
#12 Find A Buddy
Being organized does not mean isolation. It doesn’t mean a complete cut off for boosting productivity
You will need to talk to someone and that does not have to be related to work.
The best approach for becoming organized is to talk to someone who will lend you a different perspective on things and make you think from a different lens.
Find a buddy who will help you see little things that you might unintentionally overlook in your life.
Take a moment out of stress by socializing, taking constructive advice and guidance
Your buddy can be your greatest mentor who can tell exactly what you are missing on
Ask the buddy to hold you accountable for your bigger goals (bonus motivation)
#13 Maintain a work/family Balance
Keep In Touch With Your Loved Ones
Sometimes, you will not be able to gather your head around any particular task.
Don’t just stare at it.
Rather take a minute or two out for calling your loved ones for catching up.
Family can take your stress away, boost your energy level, clear your mind, and help you get better organized.
Now head back to work (extremely powerful energy to approach the work when you get stuck)
I can not stop myself from mentioning such energy boosters memories in my life: when I used to get stuck in coding . . . I used to literally cry my heart out to my dad. I remember the last time when he talked to me was about never giving up. After getting a dose of motivation from him, my program out of nowhere began running! If you still have such motivations in life then you are lucky, avail them.
#14 Rate yourself
Rate from 1-10 how much you are actually pushing yourself.
Excessive pushing can actually work against you.
It can tire you.
If you are pushing yourself 10 on 10 then sit back, relax, go easy and enjoy the process.
#15 Ignore Your Inner Critic
What is your inner voice saying?
Be mindful of your thoughts throughout the day [80% of them should be positive]
Your belief system is fed into the subconscious mind and it tells you “you are good at nothing” then be ready for the mind to work.
Your performance throughout the day is heavily dependent on the self-talk you will have.
The inner critic can be terminate your motivation plus self-confident by delaying the tasks thought interruptions
Overpower your inner critic by presenting a counter statement for negative thought
Ask yourself thoughtful questions
Practice a few vital journaling questions for self-discovery.
Finding your larger “why” in life for staying organized throughout the day.
#16 Money VS Time
Work on tradeoffs.
(I had an economics free-elective which taught be this principle)
If you want to get more accomplished by doing less than incorporate the formula of tradeoffs.
Pay someone for small things in exchange for saving your time. (same time which you can later use for more productive things)
You do not always have to pay in a form of cash.
Give presents or cook something for someone.
#17 Learn to say “no!”
Get out of the loop of people-pleasing.
Learn to say no to unimportant things,
Compare your priorities and then do not think twice while saying no.
#18 Boost Yourself!
Exercise
Walk around
Change your working position for boosting alertness
Stretch, lift objects
#19 Take A Nap
Ah my favorites, oh actually no Sally’s favorite.
Haven’t met her yet? Actually better, she will annoy you!
Anyway, you can meet the self-obsessed here.
Be mindful of the duration of naps as larger time can disrupt your sleep cycle
The ideal time is between 1-2 pm for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Wake up more alert and excited (boost your day)
#20 Get organized with tech
I personally use bullet journals, spreadsheets and sticky notes extensions for organizing my workflow.
But here are some suggestions for phone apps & widgets.
Any.do Task List & To-do List (works on Android)
Calvetica (works on iPhone, iPad)
Wunderlist (works on iOS, Android, Kindle, Windows)
#21 Do Not Do Overthinking!
Be The Optimist That You Should Be
#22 Attach an interest
For every task attach an emotion, this will help you concentrate and remain organized
Find a reason, your larger why of engaging with a particular task.
Remember Remarkable progress depends upon genuine interest.
#23 Do Not Stress Yourself With Anyone’s Problem
Stay focused on your life (the key to remaining organized throughout your life)
Do not stress over someone else’s problem if one does not appreciate your concerns.
Try to help but if one absolutely refuses to take any help then simply just track your own goals.
At-times Minding your business is a great blessing.
#24 Habitual Tasks
The key to an organization is turning your everyday task into an everyday habit.
Make your tasks easier by making them a habit
Do certain tasks with consistency without breaking the routine until it comes naturally.
The habitual task will save you time and make you more organized
#25 Make a self care list
Take care of your health
Maintain a health bullet journal (extremely imp, as I tend to ignore health but the journal keep reminding me)
Maintain a bullet journal regarding daily water consumption
Maintain a bullet journal regarding vital vitamins and minerals you consume as fuel
Keep yourself accountable by a self-care journal (i have so many things on it)
Bonus Tip: Tackle Distractions
Find a quiet place
Clean your desk for only 2-minutes, remember excessive cleaning is stealing your time (you can clean before sleeping at night, which is the last thing you will ever think to do!)
Turn of all the devices which are merely the distractions
Block websites which distract you
Use focus extension
Set a timer for each task (the key to success with the milestones)

Twenty six
This race has long been on my to-do list because of the silly idea of being themed around the Hatfield and McCoy feud. But I thought that I wouldn’t be able to use it since it takes place in Kentucky and I’ve already logged the bluegrass state. The good news is, this is a unique race that begins and ends in two different states, so I can actually use either as my state of choice. With an ending in West Virginia, this race would count as my 26th.
Originally I had imagined our trip being a family drive to the Appalachians. However, as we got closer to the race date, I realized that the race was on a Saturday, and the kids’ last day of school would be the day previous. We would need to be driving that day, and since the kids love their new school so much, and Eva would be “graduating” from elementary school, they didn’t want to miss it. Instead, my parents came to watch the kids, and Brett and I left at the crack of dawn for the ten-hour drive to eastern Kentucky.
We went straight to the packet pick up, at the local high school gymnasium. This gave us a sneak peak of the path we would be taking to get to the starting line the next morning, through many cliffs carved out of the Appalachian foothills. We had some dinner and then settled into our Hampton Inn. After I called the front desk for our 5am wake up call, we fell asleep.
Next thing I knew, I was waking up fully rested and looked at the clock to see…5:15! I guess the front desk wake up call was a fail, and I’m just lucky I woke up when I did. We hustled to pull ourselves together, slammed some breakfast in our faces, and jumped in the car for the half hour drive to the start line. I was a little bit worried about this because the race instructions said there was “no parking at the starting line”. The race information suggested we drive into town and park there, and then take a shuttle to the starting line. My concept was that Brett was going to just drop me off at the starting area, so he wouldn’t need to park, but I didn’t know if it was going to be accessible at all. I had tried to get info from the Facebook page, but I still didn’t have a response by 6 that morning.
We pulled into the Food City (grocery store) parking lot and found plenty of places to stop. Turns out, the restriction was on cars being left in the parking lot during the race. This was no problem because as soon as the race started, Brett would be leaving to travel to the next meeting spot. I’d say this was the most comfortable race starting line I’ve ever been to. Food City allowed us access to their real bathrooms (instead of porto potty), we could buy food and coffee (which Brett did) and we could stretch out in warm shelter.
The crowd started to build, although not very big. The marathon and the half marathon would be starting together, and I would estimate about 600 runners. We sang the anthem without a visible flag, and then the shotgun blast started us off.
Brett and I had a vague plan for spots to meet up. We weren’t sure about access to the route, and according to the map, there weren’t very many roads that would connect and intersect with the ones I was running. Basically, the route through the first 20 miles was all highway, and I assumed, as with other races, that we would have one lane of the road or be running on the shoulder, and regular traffic would be passing us. This race however, shut all the roads down. As soon as I turned at mile 2 onto the highway we would be on for the next six miles and saw that the runner were using the whole road, I knew I wouldn’t see Brett at any of the spots we had planned on. This was a really nice benefit for our safety, and police cars were monitoring the traffic so well that I never felt like I was sharing the road with cars, but it did make for a slightly lonely route.
The good thing was that there were water stations at every mile, at least. These spots were staffed with the most friendly, welcoming folks. It was apparent how proud they were of their hometown and how glad they were for the boost in tourism. Also, lots of people were sitting on their front porches with their coffee and their dogs, watching the runners, and almost all of them waved and shouted support. You could tell they thought we were all crazy though.
The landscape was beautiful. Green forests lined a stream we ran along side. We were beginning to go up and down some hills, and it was fun to find homes tucked away in the hollows as we came upon them.
The big challenge of this race was between miles 6 and 7- a monster hill. I had been anticipating it, wondering if I would know I was on it once I was there, but it wasn’t something you could miss. Basically straight up for a mile. I took one look, and though my pace was great, I knew I would need to walk up it. There is simply no reason to burn a ton of energy near the beginning of a race just to make it to the top of a hill. There were lots more miles to run, and I knew I would need that energy at a later time. I stuck out my elbows and walked as briskly as I could, but I was being passed by many runners gutting it out at a slow jog up to the top.
I am so grateful that I walked though. Once at the top, I was slightly winded, but also refreshed having taken a break. Those that ran were exhausted and collapsing. I was nervous for them, because it took all my wits and wherewithal to navigate the steep downhill on the other side. Without exaggeration, going down this hill, I hit 6.5 minute miles- that’s a full out sprint for me. Plus, it was so steep that I actually had to lean back and almost be parallel to the road in order to keep my balance. Many, many times I could picture myself just somersaulting all the way down. Guaranteed there were a lot of injuries on that stretch. I tried to let my body go limp, run as efficiently as I could, and just coast to the bottom.
With that behind me, I was hoping that the hills were over. In fact, one race volunteer told me it was all downhill from there. That was a false statement. When you tell a marathon runner something bold like that, it needs to be 100% true. It can’t be net downhill or mostly downhill, it needs to be flat or downhill. So that guy wasn’t my favorite race supporter. There weren’t any more huge hills though, and the ups and downs were enjoyable as a variance. But still- don’t make claims you can’t back up.
So as I’ve mentioned it was a fairly lonely race. There were many long stretches where I didn’t see any runners in front or behind me. The organizers did a great job marking the route though. All along the race path, there were signs posted, each hand written with the name of a runner who was back for a second time running the race, and words of encouragement. This really helped break up the monotony, and assure me I was on the right track. There were also cute statements on each of the mile marker signs. Funny slogans and encouragement. My favorite was at mile 10 which read “have you seen the world’s tiniest horses?” Sure enough, about a tenth of a mile down, there was a little corral with three little dwarf horses. I told the owners my daughter would want one, and they said they were for sale!!!
Mile 13 was the finish line for the half marathon, so that was a big milestone in my head. Also, as I approached, I saw that Brett had made it to cheer me on. He was with a big group of race supporters, dressed like Elvis. He was positioned on the Kentucky side of the river, and I had to run across a bridge to West Virginia and around a quaint downtown, and then back to really be half way done, so I told him to wait a moment while I ran that spur. When I came back, I changed shirts and hats and chatted with him a moment. He was frustrated by his inability to find spots to see me, but I assured him that I knew it was impossible.
I set off again, and found myself alone hoping I was on the right path. I soon found some runners and was feeling really good about my pace. I wasn’t going to get anything record breaking, but I did feel spry and able to finish. The water stops were very plentiful, and I was being smart by drinking water and Gatorade at each of them. At one point, a water stop was only about a half mile from the previous one. I declined the water, and I think that worried the volunteer. He shouted “good luck” as though he knew I was going to drop dead. The heat was starting to increase, and at one place I actually took a handful of ice and put it in the front of my sports bra. That was magical. Unbelievably, it took a mile for it all to melt; maybe I wasn’t as overheated as I thought.
I felt great and giddy until about mile 18. Then the heat started to get to me. I know I’m in trouble when I start getting goose bumps, and sure enough, I was covered in them. Temps were reaching the mid 80’s and although there was occasional shade, a lot of the road was in the beating sun. I tried to keep a good attitude, and slog through each mile, but my outlook was waning. A bright spot was when I passed the 9 minute per mile pace leader along the trail. I had a moment of excitement that maybe my watch was wrong and I was headed for a personal record, only to find out that she had had a “bathroom emergency” and was woefully off pace. Nonetheless, I did pass her and the other pace leaders and finished in front of all of them, regardless of their projected finish times. That’s something!
The final mile was a real test of my endurance. It was approaching noon, almost 90 degrees, and I was running along a very exposed highway with the sun beating down. I was feeling very weak and getting worried about my health. I was pushing my body way too hard, and was hoping to be able to actually run across the finish line rather than crawl.
Again, I crossed a river and was back in West Virginia for the finish line. I saw Brett, which was a relief, and I saw the Hatfield and McCoy actors cheering me on. I crossed and had a moment of concern that I was going to be taken to the medical tent. People kept asking me if I was ok, so I guess I must have looked bad. I got my medal and double checked that it was the MARATHON medal (not the half) and then put a cold towel on my head and sat down. I immediately felt better, and I was so glad to be done.
Once hitting the finish, I didn’t see my time. Apparently there was a clock glitch and although the computer registered my time, there was nowhere to actually see what it was for the moment. That was ok though; I figured I was right around 10 minute miles and for as tough as the race was, I was very happy with that.

The Ultimate Advice for Every 20 Year Old
During the filming of #AskGaryVee Show 244, Taylor, a 22 year old fresh out of college, phoned in for advice on how she can build a business. What followed was one of the most important pieces of advice I have recorded and is applicable to almost all my community, but definitely to young people across the world between 20–30 years old. Here is how the call with Taylor played out word for word:
Phone Ringing…
Taylor: Hello?
Gary: Hey Taylor, it’s GaryVee. You’re on The #AskGaryVee Show.
Taylor: No way!
Gary: Yes way.
Taylor: Holy crap! Okay.
Gary: Where you from?
Taylor: Yeah, sweet. I’m from Buffalo, New York.
Gary: I love it, are you a Bills fan?
(Taylor sighs)
Taylor: Unfortunately yes.
Gary: I know you said unfortunately ’cause you’re trying..
Taylor: We’re not doing good.
Gary: Well listen, neither are the Jets, don’t worry. So what’s going on?
(Taylor laughs)
Taylor: Nothing much. I basically was just dying to ask you a question. Currently graduated college last May and I’m trying to build my own business, brand, hustle, all that kinda stuff and my question for you is, and I’m probably sure that a lot of people ask this —
Gary: It’s okay.
Taylor: The same things.
Gary: It’s okay.
Taylor: How do you get over the stump of you’re graduating, and you feel all this pressure ’cause you’re trying to build something but you’re still so young. But you wanna do the stuff and grow it big. I’m just in a rut and I can’t get out of it. But I have a hustle and a drive that I know I’ll be able to build something. But I’m just in this space that’s not allowing me to.
Gary: I know where you’re at. Let me help you. The space you’re in is probably the macro, micro issue. So it’s macro patience, micro speed, right?
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: What do I mean by that? You need to be patient as fuck, Taylor. You’re , 22-23years-old. Like what do you think’s gonna happen overnight?
Taylor: Yeah, I know.
Gary: You need to be fast. 7A.M. to two in the morning every day.
But in the big picture, you need to realize nothing good is gonna happen for the next six years.
Taylor: Okay. Do you think that I should just try every good idea that I think I have and just go for it all out? Or do you think I should stick with one thing at a time?
Gary: I think the fact that you even asked that question, that you should taste flirting with a lot of different things because you’ll be crippled by the what if if you don’t. Even though that’s not the perfect formula to build the biggest short term wealth because you should triple down on one thing instead of being half pregnant on nine.
Taylor: Okay, I like that.
Gary: Taylor, let me tell you something. Let me ask you, the pressure, who do you? Like are you trying to prove to yourself, to your siblings, to your parents, to the world? Who are you trying to prove that you’re successful to, or that this was the right call, or you’re gonna make it?
That’s what you have to figure out.
Taylor: Hmm, that’s a good question.
Gary: What are you impatient for? What’s the problem? You wanna buy a fuckin’ Rolex? What’s the rush?
Taylor: I feel like I’ve known that I’m meant to do something big.
Gary: Me too.
Taylor: And I grew up in an entrepreneurial household.
Gary: Me too.
Taylor: So it’s in my blood, it’s in my bones.
Gary: Good.
Taylor: I feel like I watch all these other Millennials hitting these huge I guess milestones in their life.
Gary: What milestones?
Taylor: Then I’m sitting here.
Gary: Let’s break it down. How old are you?
Taylor: I’m 22 , about to be 23 .
Gary: Okay, what milestone, please give me a Millennial and the milestone they achieved that makes you feel like you’re just sitting in fucking Buffalo?
Taylor: Well, I’m sitting in Buffalo, which is one thing I’m not happy about. But..
Gary: That’s right ’cause it’s home of the Buffalo Bills, piece of shit team.
Taylor: Yeah. (laughs)
Gary: But before you go there, forget about sitting in Buffalo, who’s the Millennial and what’s the milestone that’s making you feel like you’re sitting there?
Go. The truth, go.
Taylor: Well honestly there’s people on social media which definitely is not always true.
Gary: Who?
Taylor: But I watch, oh god, the only thing on the spot I can think of is a Kardashian or a Jenner which is lame, but. (laughing)
Gary: Can we talk about this please?
Taylor: Yeah, I feel like, sure.
Gary: Like you’re telling me that Kylie Jenner’s fucking trillion followers on Instagram makes you feel like you’re just sitting there?
Taylor: No, I feel like the fact that she’s already got a business started that’s super successful, obviously that comes with her fame.
Gary: Did you factor in the fact that her sisters and mom architected something for years while she was a teenager that she was able to walk directly into, that gave her a springboard? That she had the financial capabilities of deploying ungodly amounts of plastic surgery, and all the other variable things that she’s been able to do to create that culture, and that financial benefit?
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: Did you factor in that her mom is a ninja architect of business and created that framework?
Taylor: Yeah and I feel like not many people give them the credit for that.
Gary: I agree.
Taylor: I totally think that they built this empire.
Gary: I agree. But what the fuck does that have to do with you?
Taylor: It has nothing to do with me. I know.
Gary: No shit. Remember how I? I don’t know if you saw this where I said stop looking at your friends’ shit or whatever the fuck I put on Instagram?
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: I don’t know if you saw it or not but it doesn’t matter. Like you looking at the Kardashians is the most ludicrous horseshit I’ve ever heard in my life.
(Taylor laughs)
Taylor: Well that’s just first one that can pop into my when you asked me.
Gary: Great. Listen, we’re here, we’re here. Give me another one.
Taylor: There’s a guy in London. I can’t think of his name at the top of my head.
Gary: I’m gonna stop, I’m gonna stop you right now.
Taylor: Okay.
Gary: Let me give you some, I was gonna say fatherly. I guess my father was 40, no I’ll give you some massively older brother, uncle advice.
You ready?
Taylor: (laughs) Okay, yes.
Gary:
Every second you spend thinking about what somebody else has is taking away from time that you could create something for yourself.
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: You’re losing. You’re losing ’cause you’re laying in your bed looking at somebody’s fucking glamorous photoshopped picture of them doing something cool. You’re envious, and you’re jealous, and you’re impatient, and it’s crippling your upside.
Taylor: Yeah ’cause that’s where I wanna be and I know I’m not there yet.
Gary: You haven’t done shit.
Taylor: I know.
Gary: So go do shit that actually gets you there so that you earn it instead of like you dwelling that you’re not there and hoping that’s something’s gonna happen. I don’t know what’s going through your mind.
Taylor: Yeah. Well I guess I’m hustling on the side, but I don’t think I’m doing enough I guess.
Gary: You definitely aren’t doing enough if you have enough time to fucking consume the content of a Kardashian and some boy in London.
Taylor: That’s true. (laughs)
Gary: Taylor, listen to me. Taylor, listen. You’ve gotta deploy patience and you gotta love the process. I’m addicted to the process of the battle scars, the setbacks, the lack of, you know. Taylor, I gave up my entire 20s, all of ’em. Imagine not doing anything fun or going anywhere for the next eight years, including Saturday and Sunday. That’s what I did from 22 to 30 . Every day I spent hours a day in a liquor store, thought about a liquor store, built a liquor store, sold wine. Like spent every day. Like this last weekend, don’t lie to me Taylor, what did you do this last weekend? What did you do fuckin’ Saturday and Sunday? Tell me the truth, don’t bullshit me.
Taylor: Yeah, no bullshit, I’m helping my mom right now on digital media and branding for her company.
Gary: Lovely.
Taylor: So I had a marketing meeting.
Gary: Lovely.
Taylor: With one of the people doing that.
Gary: Love you.
Taylor: Then I also have coming up..
Gary: How much time did you have for yourself on Saturday and Sunday that was not working every minute? Tell me the truth.
Taylor: A lot, a lot.
Gary: I know. So that’s the punchline, right? Now imagine this.
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: When I tell you this. You spent more downtime on not your career this weekend than I did in my entire 20s combined.
Taylor: Oh shit, okay. That put things into perspective.
Gary: I think so.
Taylor: Awesome. Yeah, I need to just get to it.
Gary: Taylor, you need to do me a huge favor. If you really wanna win and you wanna come to New York in eight years, and shake my hand, here’s what you need to do. You need to stop giving a shit about what anybody else has and realize that if you put your head down and just work for the next years, no glamor, no new fucking car, suitcase, jewelry, trip, event, no Coachella,no fucking new fucking sneakers. Like fuckin’ work, you will have it. Every time you care about one of the things I just mentioned, it will slow down your process of having it.
Taylor: Okay so in less than eight years when I’m a millionaire by 25 , I’ll come shake your hand.
Gary: I promise you that statement itself made me 100% guarantee that you won’t.
Taylor: No!
Gary: Yes. Yes, that’s how this works. Being a millionaire at 25 when you’re 22 , and you’re dick shit, and haven’t even started is inconceivable unless you fuckin’ hit the lotto. What’s the romance?
Taylor: Hmm, okay.
Gary: What’s the romance? I wanna make, you know how everybody says, “GaryVee, when are you gonna buy the Jets? “In two years?” and then I reply 20 years . I’m a romantic about the journey and the process which is why I’m actually gonna pull it off. You’re trying to be a millionaire by 25 . How, Taylor?
Taylor: It’s just a goal I’ve always had.
Gary: Why?
Taylor: Right now with what I’m doing I guess it’s not.
Gary: That’s right, it’s an arbitrary bullshit thing that means nothing.
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: Wouldn’t you rather guarantee millionairship by 36 by doing long term marathon running versus doing a bunch of bullshit sprints that guarantees never having it? And I promise you, a funny thing happens to your self-esteem when you’re 31 and not a millionaire because you’ve been chasing fast fucking cash, and you’re now six years removed from not hitting your goal. Your self-esteem starts fuckin’ with your head.
Taylor: Mhmmm, yeah.
Gary: Listen carefully.
Taylor: I agree.
Gary: I wanna buy the New York Jets, but when I clarify it to everybody, I want the process of trying to buy the New York Jets more than buying the New York Jets.
Understand?
Taylor: Yeah. ’Cause ultimately that’s the end goal, but there’s a process behind that.
Gary: You have to understand, I don’t give a fuck about the end goal. I care about the process, the enjoyment of doing it. You’re not enjoying yourself trying to get to a million bucks over the next three years.
Taylor: No. (laughs)You’re right.
Gary: Oh I know I’m right. I’m just sticking on this right now because I feel like we’ve gone into this deep enough that I might as well hold on for a couple more minutes to see if I can actually pull you through instead of you just being on this high of practicality for 36 hours, and then going back to Instagram bullshit in 48 hours.
Taylor: I’m gonna deactivate that shit. (laughs)
Gary: No, you need to learn to discipline, to be able to put it in the proper bucket.
Taylor: Yeah. I just feel like I hold myself at this pedestal only it’s crippling myself ’cause I’m not actually doing the things to get there.
Gary: Of course so you’re playing a fake narrative instead of putting in the actual work that’s needed to actually pull it off. Wishing instead of executing. Then what’s happen is you’re living a fake world to yourself, but you know it, which then changes your behavior in the way you interact with others.
Taylor: That’s true.
Gary: I know. Like for all my bravado now, I was real quiet in my 20s. People made fun of me, like, “You work “in your dad’s liquor store? “I’m on Wall Street making a $100,000 , I got a BMW.” I’m like, “That’s nice, Pat.”
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: Do you understand the level of disrespect I have for Pat? Do you understand the level of disrespect I have for all those -year-olds flashing shit on fuckin’ Instagram with short term moves? I can’t wait for the fucking world to melt. I can’t wait for all these bullshit people to get fuckin’ hosed out when the economy gets shit.
Taylor: Yeah it’s ’cause they’re short term affording these things that are flashy, but in the long term, it’s not sustainable for what they’re doing right now.
Gary: Yeah but meanwhile, you’re admiring the fuck out of them.
Taylor: I know, it’s a problem.
Gary: No shit, Taylor.
Taylor: It’s really bad.
Gary: Taylor, you need to start lovin’ the process, and the work, and the grind. You need to start respecting people that are like sleeping with like four roommates and buying their t-shirts at Walmart.
Taylor: Yeah, you know what? I feel like I need that wake up. But I feel like I need to hit rock bottom and have that wake up. I’m too comfortable right now. It’s annoying the shit out of me.
Gary: I don’t think so. I think you’re saying you need to hit rock bottom because it buys you more time to bullshit like you are right now.
Taylor: Hmm, I never thought of that.
Gary: You know what I mean? Like you know it’s not working. You’re just saying, by the way, let me go complete left field on you. You’re a 22-year-old girl, woman. Like it’s okay to enjoy a little bit now too. You’ve heard me say regrets, I don’t know how deep you know my content, but once in a blue moon when people ask me the advice for 25-year-old Gary, the answer is go have fun, asshole. It would’ve been okay to go to Vegas, or Acapulco, or like do some dumb shit. Do you know what I mean?
Taylor: Yeah. I think I’ve had my fun in college though and now I feel like it’s time to work.
Gary: No, no. That’s the bullshit PR version Taylor. The reality Taylor is still fuckin’ in that zone.
Taylor: Hmm. Yeah.
Gary: Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t hold yourself accountable to arbitrary bullshit fantasies. Just put in work and enjoy that. Enjoy eating shit, and dirt, and bleeding, and the grind, and don’t give a fuck about what anybody else thinks, why you haven’t done it, why are you doing that. Have four jobs. Fuckin’ Wendys, Walmart, your side hustle. Work, train, learn. Don’t think you’re a digital expert just because you’re 22 and you have an Instagram account. Show me how much fuckin’ shit you’ve sold with your digital social media skills.
Taylor: Okay.
Gary: Do you understand?
Taylor: No, I do. Yeah.
Gary: You’re just completely in the wrong game and I’m holding you onto this because you and 99% of the people that are watching are playing the same game.
Taylor: I know which is why I wanted to ask the question. I’m obviously not the only one.
Gary: No, you’re the majority and the massive majority. The question is, you just need to understand the following.
You can trick losers, you’re not tricking me.
Taylor: Good ’cause I want honest answers.
Gary: You don’t need my honest answer. You know you’re not tricking yourself either. None of us are tricking ourselves.
Taylor: No.
Gary: I just wanna remind you that you might be able to trick your Uncle Hal, and you might be able to trick your girlfriend that was in your fucking college with you. But you’re not tricking the winner when you’re bullshitting. Got it?
Taylor: Got it.
Gary: So even if you’re posturing, and pandering, and PR-ing yourself, no winner thinks you’re winning.
Taylor: Yeah, ’cause I’m not.
Gary: I know. Work. That’s the answer to all these questions.
Taylor: Got it.
Gary: Work, learn things, do stuff, try to sell shit, learn how to make money. Work.
Taylor: Alright, I will.
Gary: Was this good?
Taylor: Awesome. Thank you so much.
Gary: Can you do me a huge favor?
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: Can you email me in 30 days, and don’t bullshit me, what’s your Twitter handle or Instagram?
Taylor: Instagram it’s @TheFabulousJourney.
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: Me, and my whole team, and the entire VaynerNation is watching.
Taylor: Oh shit, okay. Got it.
Gary: I’m gonna smoke you out of your bullshit.
Taylor: (laughs) Okay.
Gary: Everybody’s watching.
Taylor: Okay, I got it.
Gary: Do you understand?
Taylor: Yeah.
Gary: I like your blue dress.
Taylor: (laughs) Thank you, I got it on sale.
Gary: I like that answer. That’s the best thing you said all fuckin’ day. That’s the best thing you said this whole time. Listen, slow and steady wins the race. You’re only competing with yourself.
Taylor: Okay.
Gary: Got it?
Taylor: Got it.
Gary: Nobody else defines you. Not me, not everybody watching, not your mom, not the fucking Kardashians, you.
Taylor: Got it.
Gary: You can grind and be patient for 10 years every day and still be nine years younger than me and I would trade places with you. That’s how amazing having time on your side is.
Taylor: Yeah, time’s everything.
Gary: So use it.
Taylor: I will.
Gary: Good, see ya.
Taylor: Thank you.
Gary: You’re welcome.
This conversation really struck a chord with me. Her actions aren’t mapping to her desire and I know that her thought process is the same one that so many people in their 20s have today and it’s just not going to lead them to place where they’ll win. I hold ZERO punches in this one and I would love for you to check out the full the video. Patience is a tough game, my friends .. there’s just no way around it.
