Vietnam war helicopters
Bell AH-1 HueyCobra / Cobra
The Cobra is a single-engine attack helicopter produced by Bell Helicopter as a primary attack helicopter in the Vietnam War for aerial assaults or as air cavalry. The AH-1 is sometimes affectionately referred to as the “Huey Cobra” or “The Snake”.
Bell OH-58 Kiowa
The Bell OH-58 Kiowa was an entire line of military helicopters with a single engine and a single rotor. These helicopters were mostly used for observation, reconnaissance, utility, and for providing combat support.
Bell UH-1B/C Huey Cobra / Frog
The Bell UH-1B/C was modified from the UH-1A Cobra to include a set of machine guns for attacking ground targets. The UH-1B/C was used sparingly during the Vietnam War.
I had no idea that there were so many different types of helicopters used in the Vietnam war and i find it interesting learning about what they were all used for some were used more than others but they all had a specific job that they did.

War Helicopters
In the Vietnam war helicopters were used extensively, mostly by the United States military. Many different types of helicopters were used all of them designed for different things. They could be massive transport helicopters to small attack helicopters or even helicopter drones
Some helicopters like the Bell AH-1 HueyCobra (or just Cobra) and the Bell AH-1J SeaCobra were designed to be attack helicopters and that was there main function. Unlike other helicopters like the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse (also called the Loach) which was designed to be light and was used primarily for observation or transporting personnel similarly to the Bell OH-58 Kiowa.
Helicopters were also designed specifically for transport, anti submarine warfare, heavy artillery, search and rescue but a lot of them were multi purpose as it would be rather stupid to have only one main ability. For example transport helicopters had to have some form of protection in case of a attack.

Helicopters in Vietnam
The Vietnamese war was the firs large scale war where helicopters were the main use of combat, this time is often refered to 'when helicopters came of age'. The war saw many different types of helicopters being used they were;
Bell AH-1 HueyCobra / Cobra - This attack helicopter was developed very quickly at the beginning of the Vietnam war, it took about two years to develop, due to a small and easily manoeuvrable aircraft not being invented yet. This aircraft gained upwards of a million operational hours in the Vietnam war alone.
Bell AH-1J SeaCobra - After the successful deployment of the The cobra attack helicopter the Marine corps sought to produce their own version of this agile helicopter. The Sea Cobra was fitted with two engines instead of one to give reassurance during over water operations and also had a massive canon nose turret mounted upon it.
Kaman HH-43 Huskie - I found this aircraft the most interesting because of of its intermeshing motors, this design was revolutionary at the time of its creation and has since become a very popular design in helicopter creation. This motor style made it so the aircraft was fully airborne in under a minute, which although seems like a long time to get of the ground now it was considered the fastest of it's time.

The Vietnam war is a relatively famous event in history even over here of US invading Vietnam thinking it would be an easy fight given the numbers and power difference, unfortunately for them there enemy’s were avid enjoyers of Sun Tzu ‘s classic book ‘the art of war’ and using the tactics of Guerrilla warfare were able to divide and conquer through attacking in small groups and sowing chaos and uncertainty into there enemies, this isn’t a history blog though so let’s just talk about how the US used helicopters.
the Millitary used them for a different variety of things depending on the model, some were massive and meant to transport in troops, some were made for offence while smaller ones were made to act as drones and some were multi purpose, here’s a description of all the 24 types of helicopters listed on the site.
Attack Helicopters
Bell AH-1 HueyCobra / Cobra
The Cobra is a single-engine attack helicopter produced by Bell Helicopter as a primary attack helicopter in the Vietnam War for aerial assaults or as air cavalry. The AH-1 is sometimes affectionately referred to as the “Huey Cobra” or “The Snake”.
Bell AH-1J SeaCobra
The SeaCobra was a twin-engine attack helicopter that was developed from the single-engine AH-1 Cobra helicopter. The AH-1J SeaCobra was used later in the later stages of the Vietnam war.
The Marine Corp used it for the sea-based interdiction of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in 1972. The Bell AH-1J was also used for various subsequent assaults and military operations conducted by the US Marine Corps.
Observation Helicopters
Hughes OH-6 Cayuse (Loach)
The Hughes OH-6 Cayuse is a light helicopter with a single engine and a four-bladed main rotor. It was used for transporting personnel, escorting other aircraft and naval vessels, attacking enemy units, and acting as an observation post.
The US military primarily used the OH-6 for observational and reconnaissance purposes.
Bell OH-58 Kiowa
The Bell OH-58 Kiowa was an entire line of military helicopters with a single engine and a single rotor. These helicopters were mostly used for observation, reconnaissance, utility, and for providing combat support.

HELICOPTERS RESEARCH
The first free flight took place on May 13, 1940. The innovative 28-foot diameter, three-blade rotor allowed for variable pitch of the blades with a blade speed of 250 to 300 mph. The concepts demonstrated in the VS-300 provided the basis for the first production helicopters and became the standard for helicopter manufacturing across the world. On June 27, 1931, Sikorsky submitted a patent application (no. 1,994,488) for a direct lift aircraft, which included all the major engineering features of the VS-300.
Here is a little part of the history that I found interesting, which can help me with my research in the future with my whole idea, with animals and beasts, how wide they are, speedy they can be if they can fly etc.
List of my most interesting helicopters in my opinion and what they were used for and how that can help me during my research and designing processes.
This chopper is mostly known for having been used to spot enemy artillery.
Hiller OH-23 Raven (Model UH-12)
The Raven was used as a scouting helicopter during the early phases of the war, before it was eventually replaced by the Cayuse in early 1986.
On a few occasions, the OH-23 was also used for medical evacuation purposes, but this was rarely the case.
Bell UH-1 Iroquois
The UH, nicknamed “Huey” is a utility military chopper that was used for troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation, and sometimes for military purposes.
What I can take from this is the speed, size, camouflage, which I can implement in my idea and the creations I am deciding to create.

Bell AH-1 Cobra / Vietnam 1969
By June 1967, the first AH-1G HueyCobras had been delivered. Originally designated as UH-1H, the "A" for attack designation was soon adopted and when the improved UH-1D became the UH-1H, the HueyCobra became the AH-1G. The AH-1 was initially considered a variant of the H-1 line, resulting in the G series letter. AH-1 Cobras were in use by the Army during the Tet offensive in 1968 and through the end of the Vietnam War. Huey Cobras provided fire support for ground forces, escorted transport helicopters and other roles, including aerial rocket artillery (ARA) battalions in the two Airmobile divisions. They also formed "hunter killer" teams by pairing with OH-6A scout helicopters. A team featured one OH-6 flying slow and low to find enemy forces. If the OH-6 drew fire, the Cobra could strike at the then revealed enemy. Bell built 1,116 AH-1Gs for the US Army between 1967 and 1973, and the Cobras chalked up over a million operational hours in Vietnam. Out of nearly 1,110 AH-1s delivered from 1967 to 1973 approximately 300 were lost to combat and accidents during the war. The U.S. Marine Corps used AH-1G Cobras in Vietnam for a short time before acquiring twin-engine AH-1J Cobras...114th Assault Helicopter Company?
