With the United States coming out of the Great Depression, the railroads were in need of something to make passenger rail travel popular again. In response to the Diesel-Powered Pioneer Zephyr of the Burlington Route that came a few months prior, Carl F. Kantola designed an Art Deco streamlined shroud for New York Central 5344, the last of the J-1E Hudsons built for that railroad. Debuting on December 27th 1934, the locomotive was displayed at Grand Central Terminal marking a new era of locomotive design and earning it's name "Commodore Vanderbilt".
Hailed as the world's first streamlined steam locomotive, the Commodore Vanderbilt would go on a tour to major cities of the New York Central before being put to use on the 20th Century Limited. The streamlining of the locomotive would be followed up by similar designs on several other North American railroads. In fact, L-2A Mohawk No. 2873 would be equipped with a similar streamlining for the Million-Dollar Rexall Streamlined Train in 1936.
With the advent of J3A Hudsons No. 5445-5454, No. 5344 would lose it's shroud in favor of the Henry Dreyfuss streamlining that was used for the last ten J3As and was reassigned to the Mercury in 1939. But as streamlining would only increase the maintenance, the 5344 would become a regular Hudson again but would eventually gain a centipede tender. No. 5344 would continue to serve the New York Central until it was eventually retired and scrapped alongside all the other Hudsons in the late 1950s.
Although the locomotive was lost to history, its legacy carries on with model railroading, various forms of media, and a tender from No. 5313 that was converted into a steam generator car and can be seen on static display Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In addition, a few steam locomotives from the NYC have made it into preservation such as L-3A Mohawk No. 3001, which The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society plans to restore to oprating condition once enough funds are raised.

Nuts & Milk
Nintendo’s Family Computer had a pretty good start with its initial line-up of quite accurate conversions of their own arcade titles like Donkey Kong, Popeye and Donkey Kong Jr. With time, the offering was expanded by even more ports and original games made specifically for the system. However, the company’s higher-ups knew that their R&D divisions could not keep up with churning out new releases of their own – a cooperation with third-party developers was urgently needed. In the process, Nintendo introduced strict licensing rules so they can filter out shovelware or inappropriate content, while racking up plenty of money in licensing fees. Just one year after Famicom’s launch Hudson Soft, a known name in Japanese home computer software, would offer Nuts & Milk, which solidified them as the first third-party Famicom game developer and a major partner of Nintendo for years to come.

I love your OC 'Hellcat' btw, are you willing to chat about your other OCS?
here you go anon *throws a bunch of new yorkers at you*
All of these gals are a part of the 20th Century Limited, a New York to Chicago passenger service that ran in the first half of the 1900s. They're in a love triangle and everyone else on the NYC is living for the drama. Main bulk of their story takes place in the late 40s.
Cachet
dignified, responsible, strait-laced
she'll make sure the mail gets where it needs to go no matter the cost - kind of an ends justify the means person
tends to be kind of stoic but has this vulnerable, softer side that emerges occasionally
has rizzed possibly the entire railroad, entirely by accident - she just has that much unintentional game
is forreal in love with Century Club, but doesn't know how to actually pursue a real relationship
the structure on her right arm is a mail hook, used for the bringing mail onto the train while in motion. In train form, it swings out, but here, it extends telescopically!
Century Club
sensual, big-hearted, bold
CeCe for short
possibly the loveliest person you've ever met - just really kind and open with people - always knows just what to say
has a trio of sisters that always have her back and will kill anyone that hurts her - CeCe is definitely the baby of the bunch - her sisters are Century Inn, Century Lounge, and Century Tavern
is technically a combination car but lounge car sounds better and that's what she tells people
big reader and writes poetry
started the year off in love with Carnegie, but is slowly shifting her affections towards Cachet
Carnegie
elegant, powerful, prideful
cold and beautiful like the lunar surface
Cachet's ex, currently trying to keep her and CeCe apart because she still has feelings
her and Cachet had an intense fling, Carnegie was more in love than Cachet was
is not in love with CeCe
not a bad person, just very very jealous
her and the other super hudsons all named themselves after prominent new york families after commodore vanderbilt (their older cousin and fellow hudson) was christened similarly - the others are Astor, Whitney, Roosevelt, Rockefeller, De Lancey, Morgan, Winthrop, Olyphant, and Goodyear
loves the theremin - listens to music out of the moon (album by les baxter, harry revel, and dr samuel hoffman) maybe every day
oh yeah and there's also a plotline where Cachet is carrying important documents and then gets robbed and goes on a noir detective style adventure to get them back all while confronting her own emotions but whatevs
#apologies for the delayed reply! had to actually draw them lol#the all c starting names is a complete accident#I also have more general stexifications of real rolling stock coming soon 👀#starlight express#stex#starex#ocs#cachet#century club#carnegie#from the cab#fanart#ask#anonymous
