Recommendation algorithms have become somewhat of a secret sauce for tech platforms. They are what keep users engaged on the apps, queuing up related content for when you finish reading a post or watching a video. For example, the recommendation algorithm for TikTok — the uber-popular video-sharing app that's currently embroiled in a standoff with the Trump administration — is the shining jewel of the service that has captivated millions of young users.

Author and computer scientist Jaron Lanier, who has come to be known as the founding father of virtual reality, said that instead of letting the algorithms guide you, it's better to search for the next video you want to watch.

"Always choose," he says in the documentary. "That's another way to fight."

  Install a Chrome extension that can undo recommendations on platforms, said ex-YouTube engineer Guillaume Chaslot.

There is a slew of such extensions available, such as one that blocks recommended videos and comments on YouTube.

The interviewer in the documentary comments that Chaslot is trying to undo something he helped create: Chaslot was a co-creator of YouTube's recommendation algorithm before he left Google in 2013.

  Turn off notifications on apps that aren't pinging you with important or timely information.

This is a good way to set boundaries between you and the social networks beckoning to you from inside your phone, documentary subjects agreed, including Harris, ex-Facebook operations manager Sandy Parakilas, ex-head of user experience at Mozilla Aza Raskin, and Rosenstein.

      Uninstall apps that you don't use or that you feel are wasting your time.

This tip perhaps carries even more weight leading up to the upcoming 2020 presidential election, as tech firms scramble to police misinformation on their platforms.

Don't click on clickbait.

When you click on "clickbait" — or stories with incendiary headlines that falsely advertise the true content of the article — you're feed an existing, broken system, according to Rosenstein. News publishers have been forced to adapt to these tech platforms' algorithms, he said, changing the kinds of stories they run based on what gets the most eyeballs online.

Follow people on social media that you don't agree with, said data scientist and author Cathy O'Neil.

Some experts say social media has exacerbated political polarization, another adverse side effect caused by tech platforms, according to the documentary.

Another school of thought is that though social media sites can be polarizing, it's not entirely their fault: US politics were already polarized, as The Verge's Casey Newton reported.

Contrary to O'Neil's advice, a 2018 study provided evidence that following those with opposing views online can actually increase political polarization, though the study did have several limitations.

Don't let your kids use social media.

Several of the technologists featured in the documentary stood firmly by this rule. Alex Roetter, a former senior vice president of engineering at Twitter, said his kids don't use social media at all. "It's a rule," he said. Ex-Facebook director of monetization Tim Kendall also said he is adamant about it: "We don't let our kids have really any screen time," he said.

Jonathan Haidt, a New York University social psychologist and author, said if you are going to let your kids sign onto social media, wait until high school. "Middle school's hard enough," he said in the program.

Teen phone addiction is represented in a startling scene during the dramatized portion of "The Social Dilemma." At one point, the young daughter is visibly craving her phone after her mother locks each family member's device in a glass case during dinner. The daughter sneaks away from the table and wacks the case with a wrench, cracking it open to hungrily retrieve it, much to the horror of her mother.

Leave all of your devices outside of the bedroom at a fixed time each night.

Haidt laid this tip out as a way for families to set boundaries for phone use in the house. He suggested that at a fixed time — perhaps half an hour before you go to sleep — you should leave your phone somewhere else in your home.

  Deleting your social media account can lead to progress, Lanier said.

He acknowledged it was unrealistic to expect everyone to do so, but he advised that even some people deleting their accounts and freeing themselves of the "manipulation engines" could help start a societal dialogue around the topic.

These are merely tips for cutting down on using your phone and the addictive technology and social media apps therein, but a whole slew of factors will need to work in tandem before we see any real change, such as massive public pressure and a desire from within these tech companies to reform, according to the technologists and experts in "The Social Dilemma."

The docudrama is now streaming on Netflix.

Llevamos bastantes semanas hablando del Huawei P40 y sus características, y aun cuando el mundo de un momento a otro comenzó a girar en torno al coronavirus y los estragos que esta causando en muchos países alrededor del globo, la verdad es que los rumores y filtrados de este terminal no pararon de llegar, es más, parecía que cada vez que se filtraba algo era de la misma Huawei porque nos llegaron imágenes de prensa mucho antes de lo que se acostumbra.

La fecha pactada era el 26 de Marzo del 2020 y tal como nos prometieron nos presentaron vía streaming los nuevos miembros de la familia “P” de dispositivos del gigante chino.

Por ahora solo hablaremos del Huawei P40 y el P40 Pro, dejaremos un apartado distinto para la tercera variante.

Mucho de lo que ya les habíamos dicho sobre este terminal terminó por cumplirse, así que iremos directo a las especificaciones oficiales de ambos ejemplares:

Iremos con la verdad por delante, los dispositivos presentados son todos interesantes pero cada uno dentro del segmento al que pertenecen, ¿que quiero decir con esto?, la versión base, el Huawei P40 está bien pero es una actualización muy correcta de su antecesor, no despunta por sobre lo que podríamos haber esperado de el, pero los otros dos modelos ya empiezan a despertar el interés de muchos, sobre todo el que no trataremos en esta nota.

Diseño y especificaciones ya las vimos bastante en las ultimas semanas, se fueron con el mejor hardware que se podían permitir dentro de todas las limitaciones que surgieron luego del bloqueo, pero no por eso dejamos de ver unas tremendas maquinas capaces de correr todo lo que les pongas por delante. Habrá procesador de la casa, puede sonar a desventaja pero el poder diseñar y fabricar tu propio hardware te da muchas ventajas al momento de evaluar rendimiento y acá creo que Huawei sabrá sacar provecho a ese Kirin 990 sin problema.

No hablaremos de la ausencia de Google en este terminal porque a estas alturas seguir dandole a ese tema es caer en la monotonía: no viene nada de Google en este terminal, supérenlos porfavor.

¿Precio y disponibilidad?, tanto el Huawei P40 como el Huawei P40 Pro estarán disponibles para la venta a partir del 07 de Abril próximo por precios que van desde los 799 Euros para el Huawei P40 (USD $875 al cambio) y 999 Euros para el Huawei P40 Pro (USD $1.095 al cambio).

Detalles más, detalles menos, esto es lo que Huawei nos presenta hoy día con estos dos terminales, dos propuestas mas que interesantes para el mercado mundial y que de seguro sabrán quedarse con un trozo importante de la torta que representa la venta de dispositivos Android alrededor del mundo.

The phones would also have a gradient rear panel in multiple colour options. The Huawei P40 series will come as the successor to the P30 family that was launched in March last year. The Huawei P40-series launch will take place through a live stream that will be available on the company’s official website. The livestream will begin at 6:30pm IST today. In addition to the regular Huawei P40, you can expect the Huawei P40 Pro and the Huawei P40 Pro+. The company may also announce its new plans to expand the Huawei App Gallery that competes against Google Play.

The Huawei P40 price is said to be set at CNY 3,988 (roughly Rs. 42,700) for the base 64GB storage variant, while its 128GB storage model would be available at CNY 4,288 (roughly Rs. 45,900) and the 256GB option is said to carry a price tag of CNY 4,788 (roughly Rs. 51,500). In contrast, the Huawei P40 Pro may start at CNY 5,488 (roughly Rs. 59,000) for the 128GB storage option. The 256GB storage model, on the other hand, would be available at CNY 5,988 (roughly Rs. 64,400) and the top-of-the-line 512GB version would be priced at CNY 6,788 (roughly Rs. 73,000). The European price of the Huawei P40 may start at EUR 799 (roughly Rs. 65,700), while the Huawei P40 Pro is rumoured to carry a starting price of EUR 999 (roughly Rs. 82,100).

Pricing details of the Huawei P40 Pro+ haven’t surfaced so far. However, the phone is likely to be priced a bit over the prices of the Huawei P40 Pro.

Huawei P40 specifications (rumoured)

The Huawei P40 is expected to run Android 10 out-of-the-box with an Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) powered experience on top. The phone would feature a 6.1-inch full-HD+ display and powered by an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 990 SoC, paired with at least 8GB of RAM. It is also rumoured with a triple rear camera setup that could be called Leica Ultra Vision Triple Cam, comprising a 50-megapixel Sony sensor, 16-megapixel secondary sensor, and an 8-megapixel tertiary sensor. For selfies, there is likely to be a 32-megapixel single selfie camera at the front.

Recent reports suggest that the Huawei P40 would come in only 128GB of onboard storage and have NanoMemory-2 card support for expanding the built-in storage. It would also include a 3,800mAh battery with support for 22.5W fast charging.

Unlike the P40, the Huawei P40 Pro would come with a 6.58-inch full-HD+ (1,200×2,640 pixels) AMOLED display along with 90Hz refresh rate support. The smartphone is also rumoured to have an octa-core Kirin 990 SoC, paired with 8GB of RAM. It would come with a quad rear camera setup with a 50-megapixel UltraVision primary sensor, 40-megapixel secondary sensor, 12-megapixel tertiary sensor, and a 3D time-of-flight (ToF) depth sensor. In terms of selfies, the phone is said to have a 32-megapixel primary sensor at the front — along with a depth sensor. It would enable 50X SuperSensing Zoom.

The Huawei P40 Pro will have 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of onboard storage options, according to the reports. It is also rumoured to have NanoMemory-2 standard memory card support. Besides, the phone would include a 4,200mAh battery with 40W fast charging and wireless charging support.

This is the first of the four penumbral lunar eclipses that are set to occur this year.

What is a penumbral lunar eclipse?

A penumbral eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Moon and the Sun. It obscures the Sun’s light for a specific amount of time, causing the Earth’s shadow to fall on the Moon. Unlike other eclipses, the penumbral eclipse is a very subtle celestial event to observe, though it is interesting to see the larger than usual appearance of the Moon, and the shifts in shadow during the 4 hour period. When the eclipse is at its peak, the Moon’s outer disc will fall under the Earth’s shadow, but not completely. At maximum eclipse, 90 percent of the Moon will be partially shaded by the Earth. As mentioned, the penumbral lunar eclipse of January 2020 will occur on January 10 i.e. this Friday. According to Time and Date, the eclipse will last from 10:37pm IST on January 10 to 2:42am IST on January 11.

As mentioned, the eclipse will be visible in India, and countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe will be able to see the lunar eclipse as well.
