Dana really showing Disney that not only will she not compromise her story or the characters in it, but she can also make it so much more gayer! And I loved Camilla educating herself about her kids identity and showing her support with the pride pin and by being an awesome parent.

ok so i know degrassi is like a kids show and they don't want to promote bad things but drugs and alcohol are very prevalent in hs, and i think more of the kids should partake. but in a casual way, not like miles. it's just, i just graduated and EVERYONE drank on the weekends and a lot of people smoked. and degrassi often times shows people that smoke as "bad influences" but in reality, weed isn't bad for you.

I AM SO GLAD SOMEONE FINALLY BROUGHT THIS UP. I think alcohol use over the seasons has been pretty well done honestly. I mean we’ve seen so many instances where characters go to parties where most people are clearly drinking. And especially in Next Class I loved seeing shots where they have just casual get togethers where they are shown drinking but never get drunk (i.e. 3x05 at the Hollingsworth house and 4x07 on the camping trip). That aspect always felt genuine to me without being too preachy. 

On the other hand, while I do think casual drug use in high school has become much more prevalent in this day and age, I personally have never been involved in that (but also note that I’m not a partier in the slightest and was kind of a hermit in hs) so I can see how it’s not mentioned as much as alcohol on the show, as least in a casual way. I’m not really sure if Degrassi would make casually getting high a more common thing because I don’t think it’s anywhere near as common as underage drinking in regards to breaking the law, but if they did it in the future I can’t say I would be surprised because it has become a lot more of a relaxed issue in today’s society. 

One thing that Degrassi has only touched on once (that I remember) that is actually much more common than smoking weed, is smoking cigarettes. While I believe that the appeal to cigarettes has declined majorly over the years, it was still a pretty common practice (at least at my high school). Where I’m from it was so much more common to see/hear about people smoking cigarettes than smoking weed (it still happened a lot but it was a lot more hush hush). But on Degrassi smoking weed has been covered so much more than cigarettes. I’ve really always wanted another plot about cigarettes because it is such a common thing and it’s so strange that the show has barely covered it, although I know that the height if smoking cigarettes has definitely passed…

But while part of me as always admired that Degrassi has always tried it’s hardest to be as realistic as possible, I think showing drinking and smoking without showing the downsides of it is possibly harmful and could easily encourage people into doing it (which isn’t to say you are a bad person if you do but it still isn’t good or healthy for you). And as much as Degrassi prides itself on being realistic it also prides itself on being educational and I can 100% understand why they would be very weary about not wanting to send the wrong message by making smoking and drinking TOO casual and common on the show. I think it’s a very fine line they are trying to walk and while they could probably get away with showing more, I can understand why they aren’t.
