PoliZ's WIP Update - 28 Aug 2024

Another productive writing week!  I touched four fics (1 new & 3 WIPs)  and wrote a total of  2930  words.   

On Ao3, I posted: 

 Chapter One of  Love is Like a Muscle (and you make me want to flex) - WinterIron mutual pining turns smutty.  

Operation Sun and Surf -  Tony & Avengers team-as-family one shot with touches of angst.  

On Tumblr I posted:

I’m juggling  20+  active/semi-active WIPs with my current  deadline being the Tony Stark This or That event which runs til the end of August.  

See  below cut for what I’m working on/planning to work on - arranged more or less by bingos/challenges/etc.  As always, feel free to send me   prompts or plot bunnies as well as asks regarding  any of these projects  or any other WIPs I’ve got out there.   Interaction really helps feed the Muse and keep me motivated!

Hot Bucky Summer 2024 [HBS_R2] (Ends 31 Aug)

More fun from the @buckybarnesevents folks - this time weekly challenges to create (usually NSFW) Bucky-centric fanworks!   Thanks to plenty of cross-filling with other events  (I’m looking at you, July Break Bingo)  I’ve submitted something for the first eleven weeks and am working on one more with a vague idea for the final week - here’s hoping time & inspiration hold out!  

* Week 12 - August 17th - August 23rd  – “What should I wear?” + Nothing -  Posted Chapter One of  Love is Like a Muscle (and you make me want to flex) on Friday.    WinterIron massage therapy (Tony getting his hands on Bucky) leading to a  happy ending. It came in at 1200 words and  crossed over  with BaBB August: Body Worship, BBB K1 - Tony Stark's Workshop.  

* Week 13 (August 24th - 30th) -  FREE WEEK + Optional Prompts: Mutual Masturbation  –  Chapter Two of Love is Like a Muscle (and you make me want to flex)  is written and will post Friday.  It’s coming in at 1024 words and crosses over with my TSTOT Row 3: Lab Sex and  WIB N2 - Mutual Pining  squares.  

Tony Stark This or That  [TSTOT_24] (Ends 31 Aug 2024)

I signed up late and then promptly forgot I had a card - so am tackling this 8-row card with the hopes of getting it at least halfway done by the end of the month.  I’ve made that goal, and might try to squeeze in one more fill before Saturday ends!

Build-A-Bucky Bingo [BaBB_R1] (Ends 31 Oct 2024)

Another fun year-long  event from the folks at  @buckybarnesevents!  Each month there’s a list of prompts and you choose (at least) one  each month for your card!  At thirty-two  fills and about two months to go, I seem to be going a bit overboard …. 😁

* May:  Bucky’s Trigger Words -  combined this with a previous  Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF251 Out There] for Just To Live One Day Out There - a Winter Soldier self-reflective ficlet. It came in at 312 words and will get posted to Ao3 Real Soon.

WinterIron Bingo Round 2  [WIB_R2] (Ends 16 Dec 2024)

Signups are still open for pre-made cards for Round Two of this super-fun bingo event! I have seventeen  fills and zero WIPs at the moment - setting this aside for the moment, as I have other time-sensitive events going.  

* Iron Soldier (One Bingo, One Fill) - looking at combining my Column B prompts: Matchmaker, Bucky Riding Tony, Stark Gala, Inside Joke and Threesome.  Still working on a plot - if you have any suggestions/want-to-sees - let me know!

*I4 - SHIELD HQ - Finally posted  Fathers Don’t Know Best  to Ao3 this morning.  A crossover with Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF245 You Never Cared, it’s a No Powers AU with Bucky working as an analyst at SHIELD who stumbles across a late night visitor to the lobby.  It came in at 410 words. 

* N1 - Hair Pulling Kink -  thanks to a fun prompt from @scottxlogan  - I filled this square with Untangling Their Attraction - where Tony’s offer of assistance leads to mutual kink discovery (not as racy as it might sound).  It’s coming in at 544 words and will post to Ao3 before this event is over. 

* N2 - Mutual Pining - see HBS Week 13 above. 

* N5 - "I'm here for you."  - Possibly the next chapter of  Lady Natasha’s Consort and Lord Steve’s Companion ?  

* O3 - Love Confession - Circling back around to Chapter Seven of  A Little Bit Carried Away - where Pepper learns about the impulsive offer Tony made to Bucky after they spent the night together.   It’s drafted at  1029 words and will cross over with TSB K3 - Pepper Potts and my pJBB C1_A1 - "Promise me you won't get mad."  prompt.  Slated to post on 9 Sep. 

Bucky Barnes Bingo - Round Six [BBB - R6]  (Ends 31 Mar)

This amazing bingo event from the folks over at @buckybarnesbingo is back!  I have twelve  fills with one WIP at the moment, but a couple  more crossovers planned.

* T1 - Watching Helplessly -  Posted Stranded Among the Stars  to Tumblr on Friday as a crossover with the Flash Fiction Friday prompt [#FFF265 Galaxies Away]. It’s a Nebula & Tony ficlet set on the ship - it came in at 345 words and will get posted to Ao3 before the event ends. 

* R4 - Bartender - Got inspired by another song to start Some Other Beginning’s End - Tony’s a bartender dealing with an a-hole patron (Brock) and his just-broken-up-with boyfriend (Bucky).  It’s sitting at 1028  words and I plan to cross over with my  pJBB  C2_A2 - "You deserve someone who makes you happy."  square. I may try to squish a few other squares in before I’m done.

Why Chicago?

Another behind-the-scenes look of my fanfic, “Strategist”. Also a bit of an explainer, since not all readers are from Chicagoland or the US.

Whatever Rick may say in the future, (my) Malcolm Pace will always come from Chicago. The City of Chicago is central to his character. To a certain degree, Chicago is the heart of the story, even if nearly the entire novel is set in New York State.

Chicago is there in the novel’s dinkuses (the section breaks of chapters that are typically three asterisks—yes, that’s what they’re called). The dinkus for this fic shares the four six-point stars of the city’s flag: ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ .

Chicago is also in the first emoji hint of what’s to come. For chapter 1, it was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💨💨💨💨💨💨💨🏙🏙🏙. The hint stands for the Great Chicago Fire, the Windy City, and the Home of the Skyscraper. Alternatively, it could refer to how, after the Great Fire, the city transformed into an architectural masterpiece. The number of each emoji is also a hint; 773 is one Chicago’s area codes.

Chicago is even there in the date chosen for the grand opening of New Athens: March 12th, as Chiara had revealed in chapter 5. 312 is another of Chicago’s area codes (the downtown area specifically).

Chicago is also there in the graphs in chapter 3—not just in the data but the colors of the chart as well. The red and the blue match the colors of the city's flag.

Chicago is there, too, in the story playlist, in a selection of featured songs/artists, like “Memories On 47th St.” by Vic Mensa. About 32 of the songs, in fact, with even more that are closely related—not that they're all listed yet. (Regrettably, the playlist does have a particular artist who did have really thoughtful messages in his old songs but has really become… bleh. Those tracks are there for their messages and vibes, not for the people who created them.)

And Chicago is also there in the inspiration behind New Athens (like the urban planning elements that borrow from Daniel Burnham’s ideas), it is a bit there in the lingo (e.g., Chapter 2 has a little Chicago slang, like “tweaking” and “lacking”), and it is very much in all the references to the Great Lakes or the Midwest or Illinois or “four states away” or a bunch of other things: Kenwood, Jane Addams, Jon Burge, the Bulls, IMSA, UChicago, the Chicago Boys, giardiniera, Malört, and other things that Malcolm might happen to think about in his daily life.

As for why...

So. Malcolm was first supposed to come from another state I lived in. Except that state wasn’t interesting enough for a story, in my opinion. Ha.

Then I thought... Interesting... Hmm. Arizona. Arizona’s interesting. There’s the Grand Canyon… There’s Sedona… Oh, and there's the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation HQ in Scottsdale, called Taliesin West, which was also FLW’s winter home and lab. That made for a nice connection to Annabeth. (In the atrocious and incomplete original draft of the capture the flag fic that this novel spawned from, Malcolm is from there, and there’s a mention of Taliesin West. [Percy wanted to take Annabeth there on a date lol.])

But Malcolm gave me city boy vibes, like, BIG big city boy vibes, so he had to come from one of the top metropolitan areas and not a suburb. The Phoenix metropolitan area (which includes the suburb of Scottsdale) is not that.

Because I made him the chief policymaker of New Athens, I also wanted to pick a place that really fueled his need—not just a desire—to build the city. What would make him want to wish so friggin badly that he could sort of raze down a country (burn it all down perhaps?) to rebuild it from scratch? And what would make him consider a solution like that?

What immediately came to mind was Chicago—and that his wish did kinda happen there, through the City Beautiful Movement, shortly after the Great Fire of 1871. The movement, which flourished from the 1890s to the 1920s, was an urban planning philosophy that was supposed to create moral civic virtue and fix certain social issues like poverty. But in the end, the City Beautiful Movement was still way more about architecture—the physical components of a city (what Annabeth's interested in). The movement failed to rectify the deep-rooted, seemingly impossible-to-solve social problems that Chicagoans had experienced and that remain to this day, like segregation, violence, and poverty (what Malcolm's interested in). This was explored/compared in chapter 4:

In the land of the bereaved and home of the depraved, they’d build an enclave with better problems.  New Athens would be everything the Second City should have become after that great blaze. Paralleling the wonders of the City Beautiful was simple enough. With a park system to make Bennett proud and a Burnham-inspired guarantee that not a foot of the shores would be appropriated to the exclusion of the people, New Athens could easily be established as “City in a Garden” and “City by the Sound”. New Athens could, too, boast the togetherness and unshakeable optimism of Malcolm’s kind of town.  But this city wouldn’t squander its chance to start from scratch. New Athens would be the place hailed as the City that Works—that did work, and for all. 

I really liked that Malcolm and Annabeth could have that connection of complementary yet opposing goals (physical and intangible institutions; permanence vs. change), which I tried to illustrate in chapter 3:

‘Something permanent,’ she’d told him. Like the architectural masterpiece Wright et al. had brought to life for the most beautiful great city left in the world.  Malcolm scoffed. Were you blind or dumb, Wright?   Some things were just too permanent. 

Chicago also has an even better connection to Frank Lloyd Wright (and other architects) than Scottsdale/Phoenix, so Malcolm could also still get that bond with Annabeth. As indicated in chapter 3, I head-canon Annabeth spending parts of two summers in Chicago with Malcolm, exploring art museums, going on architecture tours, and seeing everything there related to FLW. I honestly don’t remember if canon Annabeth had ever left camp before Percy came around. (I feel like it’s a no? But I don’t care at this point.) It just seemed like such a worthwhile, life-changing, and perfect thing if she had visited Chicago as a child. Kid-Annabeth deserves to have gone to the Sears Tower Skydeck and to have seen all those FLW buildings in person. And she deserves to have been taken on an architectural boat tour on her birthday to see those skyscrapers and drawbridges by the Chicago River. To me, it was this head-canon trip to Chicago that cemented the architectural focus of her wish for “something permanent”. What better inspiration than the very city her hero supposedly called “the most beautiful great city left in the world”?

Without revealing too much, I will say that Chicago will continue to be there throughout “Strategist”—the good, the bad, the myths, and more.

New year's eve special🥹

I finished this last night at midnight (my time) and then Tumblr crashed and I lost it :( so here we go again

The Aurora Legion had managed to turn new year’s at HQ into an intergalactic celebration of groundbreaking proportions. Not that it was big, just varied. While NYE is usually an excuse for legionnaires to slip cadets alcohol to see what would happen, tonight was like caucus 2.0.

The Unbroken could be spotted milling between diplomats from planets that weren’t completely shut behind Fold gates and Legionnaires alike. All were happily accepting the free flowing alcohol and food provided by wandering cadets who obviously drew the short straw for chores that night.

Above them all, on the bridge overlooking the arboretum, was Squad 312.

This time around, Tyler was not pacing. Instead, he stood with his arms crossed, resting loosely on the barrier in front of him. Next to him, Saedii stood in a similar fashion, choosing to show the tiniest bit of affection in the hand tucked into Tyler’s elbow.

Next to them is Auri and Kal, sitting on the  ground with their legs dangling off the bridge. Both have had a little to drink and are giggling and leaning into one another. No one would be quite surprised if they were to start making out right there.

Further down the bridge, lying on their backs to look out the top viewport, are Scarlett and Fin. Fin is pointing out constellations and every time he points up, Scarlett grabs his hand and kisses his knuckles.

“Thank you for coming, I’m really glad you’re here with us to ring in the New Year,” Tyler leans closer to Saedii and whispers. She doesn’t reply and he can see she is, unusually, off in her own world. He waits for her to say whatever it is she really wants to. Finally she takes a breath and speaks.

“When I was little and Kaliis was a baby, our family used to go to this field to watch the fireworks go off. My father and I used to climb the lias trees so that I could be as close to the fireworks as possible. That was always my favourite time of the year.” she looks past Tyler to sneak a look at Kal. 

“Those eves were our last good memories as a family. It is nice, to have my brother back for this one,” she says, before turning back to Tyler. “Thank you for inviting me,” she says and, to his surprise, she slides in closer to him, leaning in and pressing her forehead to his. He smiles at her (dimples and all) and thanks the Maker that, while he had lost plenty this year, she is here in his arms.

“... I’m telling the truth. Mum was furious at us for stealing the alcohol but watching Callie throw up on her shoes was worth it,” Auri giggled and Kal laughed a little.

“You are one hell raiser, Be’shmai. Should I be hiding my boots from you?” he asks and she rolls her eyes and pushes his shoulder.

“I’m not that drunk, Kal,” she says. He considers her for a second and leans in to kiss her, his fingers carding into her hair. She sighs happily against his lips and kisses back back.

“You know, I’m pretty sure you’re meant to save your kisses until midnight,” Auri whispers as Kal pulls away. He considers her words, and then one side of his mouth lifts into a rare smirk.

“t’s midnight somewhere, Be’shmai,” he says, before pulling her back into his embrace.

“and that’s Pisces,” Scarlett declares, turning and watching Fin’s brain short circuit a little.

“It’s not- we’re not- ho-” he stutters. She leans over and kisses his cheek with a giggle.

“I’m kidding, I know we’re in a different solar system. Just wanted to mess with you,” she says and he sighs in slight relief, turning to look at her for a minute before turning to look back at the stars.

“Hey, what do you think Zila and lieutenant dirtgirl were doing this time of the year?” he asks and Scarlett looks at him, dutifully not commenting on the way his eyes seemed to be watering a little. She gets it, they both miss Zila all the time. Scarlett considers the question for moment, looking back at the stars too.

“Well, I think that they would have been with family every year. I like to think they would have gone to Nari’s family home and they all would have bundled up and braved the cold to shoot fireworks off. Probably burned an eyebrow or two off in the process but that’s Zila for you,” Fin snorts a laugh at that and Scarlett wraps her hand into his.

“Mostly though I believe, or I hope at least, that when she is shooting those rockets up and watching them explode in the sky, that she looks at the stars and thinks about how much we love her now, even though we’re not even a thought in the universe’s mind yet,” she says and hears Fin turn his head to look at her.

“That’s beautiful, love,” he whispers and she turns to face him.

“With the year it’s been, I think we all deserve some beauty, right?”

When Legion HQ hits 00:00 station time, what remains and what has been gained of Squad 312, stands together, shoulder to shoulder on the bridge and watches as the viewports light up to become their very own fireworks display in space.

As their watching, Scarlett wraps her arms around Fin and Tyler’s shoulders and looks over them all.

“Promise we’ll stay together this year?” she asks, hopeful for the New Year.

“Promise,” Auri confirms and everyone else nods firmly. Satisfied, Scarlett grins.

“I love you all. Happy New Year,” Tyler declares, kissing his sister on the forehead. Everyone just grins back.

Iiiits Acts of Vengeance Wednesday, featuring the Avengers!

After the destruction of Avengers Island (RIP beautiful HQ), the Avengers relocate to the sub-basement under Avengers Park, formerly Avengers Mansion. Then Freedom Force attacks for some reason.

It’s not a good Act of Vengeance because the Avengers have fought these goobers before. You had one job, big event! Do new fights!

i don't understand how some people think nekoma's "sudden power-up" is so stupid like???? its not even sudden, it has been stated again and again and again that karasuno has NEVER won against nekoma?????? plus, we never saw what nekoma was up to during the training arcs (is that what you call it) which involved karasuno's first years so who knows what the fuck they did to prepare??
