Liiga team names
If you have ever wondered what the team names mean in English, or where do they originate from, I got you.
HIFK
Helsingin IFK, Helsingfors Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna (Swedish)
Translates to Helsinki Sporting Society Fellows
The name origins come from IFK sporting societys that originate from Sweden and can include several sports under them besides just hockey. The team was also originally the Helsinki area Finland’s Swedes’ team.
HPK
Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho
Translates to Ball Club of Hämeenlinna
Usually the Ball Clubs have started out as football/soccer teams until expanding into winter sports or other indoor ball sports, and they have kept the name.
ILVES
Tampereen Ilves
Translates to Lynxes of Tampere (hence the logo)
The team history doesn’t tell me why is it lynx, but it does tell me they had three other options (one being Hawks), and ended up voting Ilves as the best one.
JUKURIT
Mikkelin Jukurit
Translates to Insubordinates of Mikkeli
First of all, not to be confused to a Finnish KHL team Helsingin Jokerit. Second, apparently they originally held a naming competition for the team in their local newspaper, but the management didn’t seem to be able to agree on any of the options so someone suggested “why don’t you just name yourselves this because you’re so damn stubborn”.
JYP
Jyväskylän Palloilijat
Translates to Ballers of Jyväskylä
This is kind of the same as HPK, but instead of being named a ball club, they’re just the ballers.
KALPA
Kalevan Pallo
Translates to Ball of Kaleva
Again, ball club basically. But instead of being named after the city of Kuopio or the region of Savonia, the name actually refers to Carelian poetry instead of a location.
KOOKOO
Kouvolan Kiekko-65
Translates to Kouvola’s Hockey 1965
I explained this one earlier: the way the original name of the team would be abbreviated would be KK-65 and how Finns say the double k is “koo koo”, so they decided to use it as their official one for differentiation, because I think there are a few other KK abbreviated teams out there..
KÄRPÄT
Oulun Krpät
Translates to Stoats of Oulu / Ermines of Oulu (I’m not sure which is correct)
Basically, there used to be a bandy team from Pori by the name of Kärpät, and because the Oulu team got all of their organizational rules from them, they just went with the same name but changed it to their own location.
LUKKO
Rauman Lukko
Translates to Lock of Rauma
I tried to search for the origins of the name, but there wasn’t much more information than them trying to show off to another team whose name was Haka (hook).
PELICANS
Lahden Pelicans
Translates to Pelicans of Lahti
I tried to look for info why this name, but all I got was they just needed to change from their old one when making it to Liiga because the old name was scandalous or something. (It was Lahden Reipas, which itself wasn’t problematic, but as a brand it was not adored.)
SAIPA
Saimaan Pallo
Translates to Ball of Saimaa
You get the drill, it’s for a ball club, but like KalPa didn’t go with the city name Lappeenranta but instead with the area they are in to show they are the whole area’s team and not just Lappeenranta’s.
SPORT
Vaasan Sport
Translates to Sport of Vaasa
Obvious?
TAPPARA
Tampereen Tappara
Translates to Battle Axes of Tampere
No joke, that’s what the name means, and the logo is also basically a battle axe. The name origin on the other hand is once again just people throwing around some suggestions and thinking this sounded the best.
TPS
Turun Palloseura
Translates to Ball Society of Turku
You get it by now.
ÄSSÄT
Porin Ässät
Translates to Aces of Pori (and no, contrary to the popular belief they are not called Asshat)
There were originally two different factory worker’s teams in Pori that got merged into one and they merged one needed a new name instead of going by either one of the originals. No information why Ässät specifically.

Champions Hockey League: Gruppen 2019/2020

2, 10 and 15! 😊
2: least favorite player/s on my main team/s
I have seriously nothing against any of the Carolina Hurricanes! I’ll have to pick Klas Dahlbeck because sometimes I might forget he exists if he wasn’t on the scratch list.
10 and 15 I already answered, I copy them here:
10: favorite widely-used nickname
I answered this in the morning and I’m still not sure what it means - does it refer to player or team? And are these the super widely used like Habs and Caps and Canes etc? Because I’m not sure, I’ll list a few
Canes, obviously
Cats for Florida Panthers - it’s super nice and catchy
This is Finland-specific: I like to call HPK (Hämeenlinnan pallokerho, Hämeenlinna ball club) Kerho
I love that Sebastian had a nickname before he even came to the Canes, thank you Bill Peters for Seabass (and I obviously love that both Sebastian and Turbo-Teuvo have catchy, easily americanized nicknames)
Big Cock Brock is badass and I love it.
15: a superstition i have (or if i don’t believe in them)
I don’t believe in them. (edit, adding this for you: But I also hate betting on teams I really like on crucial games because I never seem to win and I’d hate the feeling of betting against them, it would just seem so so wrong.)
Thanks for asking!

Hey, I'll talk about it here!
Juuse was born in Forssa a but he grew up and started his playing career in Hämeenlinna. The colors of your coat of arms reminded me of the town: there's a medieval red brick castle overlooking a lake.

And this is the official coat of arms of the town.
See? Red, and the waves as a mark of water.
Then to the helmet. Juuse's former team, HPK, has gone back to their old round orange logo but around the early 2000's (not sure when they stopped) they had this.
It was a period when they rebranded the team as "hockey playing knights" (HPK comes from Hämeenlinnan pallokerho, Hämeenlinna ball club). The knights refer to the castle, of course, but it can also be a reference to Hämeenlinna being a big military town. There is a large army unit in the neighbouring smaller town, and the flag of the brigade is this.

All this combined with what you had in the post really made it resonate with how I see a good coat of arms, it tells about the person but also carries a lot of heritage and symbolism.
Your Juuse Saros coat of arms is so perfect! It really made me want to ramble a ton about it on my hockey blog (badhockeymom) but I don't know how you feel about people adding to your post on reblogs. But it really reminded me of his hometown in multiple ways and that on top of your design premises makes it so layered and rich with meanings and connotations. I love it.
Oh thank you!! Thank you for telling me this!! I am soooo pleased it resonated so well! I don't typically like comments on reblogs, but I know you've already reblogged it, so if you would like to again and comment, that's fine!! If you'd like something else in the same color scheme, I can also create something new for you to use to comment!
Again, thank you SO much for this, it means a lot to hear!!!

So I am currently spending some time in good old finland (yay hockeycountry) I'm hoping to get some new womens specific gear but we'll see about that... Other news, we tried to get tickets for the liiga finals (oulun Kärpät vs Hpk Hämeenlinna) but they sold out too fast so now we'll just go see Helsinkin HIFK vs Tampere on Friday(bronze game), which ich is also going to be a lot of fun :) anyone else up to some cool stuff?
