how much of the fic you read do you like? and how much of what you come across do you want to read?

I've been on more of an original fiction kick than fanfic recently. If you get my newsletter, you'll probably have the idea that I'm a pretty fussy reader, which is true lol, but I also believe there's no such thing as an earnest creative work (fic or original) without merit. And I'm someone who reads a lot of... objectively not great stuff. I also rarely DNF. I've started 400k word fics that I knew I didn't like from chapter 1 and still finished them hahahahaha. My friends are sick of me:

To be honest, there isn't a lot that captures my attention in the HP fandom atm. I've read so much Drarry that there isn't much that feels new or interesting to me, and I don't really read Tomarry or Taco (if there's any lol) so my options are limited as a Tom and Draco fan.

I enjoy a lot of the fic I read, but it has to really stand out to stay with me because I've read soooo many about the same characters lol. It's gotten to a point where I'll regularly pick up what I think is a fic I've never seen before and then realise a few chapters in that this is my third time reading it.

(Sorry, I'm inept at Tumblr protocols, so I'm c & p-ing two of the same asks together.)

This is a tricky one - 🤗 What advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

My real workday starts in about half an hour, so I may have to chip away at this for a while. The reason it's tricky is that fandom has changed so much since I clicked a link and found myself flailing around in LiveJournal wonderland. I embraced my OTP in that same flailing instant (Snarry, of course), and it brought me a community already at full steam. Snarry was considered a weird, batshit, indefensible pairing even then, but in its own LJ corner it was extremely beloved, and other HP shippers mostly left us alone. I'm tempted to rhapsodize about the people I encountered, but the point is, they were creative, ribald, mostly 30+ in age, delighted by Snape's moral turpitude and angst and arseholery as much as by his courage and intelligence and mystery (remember, this was pre-Lily and all the disappointment that came with it).

In short, I was welcomed and supported as I grew from a commenter and frothing enthusiast into a fic writer. (I know Discord fills some of that need currently, but chat style doesn't work for me.) And it was a free-for-all. The conversations were lengthy and earnest but also irreverent, and because they were threaded and static - no scrolling back to find a starting point or a branching tangent - they occurred over days among all kinds of fans who linked each other's opinions. If you didn't want outsiders reading your stuff, you could friends-lock it, sure. But otherwise, a fair percentage of Snape and Snarry fans felt free to drop in, share their interpretations, start a convo about your fic, and ask for help. There were also reccing communities and newsletters, and these fandom seems

Those things were as crucial to me as the actual writing. I'd been writing original fic on my own for years, but Snarry fandom's community participation was the fuel I needed to motivate me into turning my fannish infatuation into stories.

So... find a mutually supportive community. Share what you have to say. Re-kindle your excitement in any way you can. It can make fandom so much more fun and help you finish what you start.

As for writing: I'm absolutely, utterly character-driven, so that shapes how and what I write. You may prefer plot or world-building. Or favorite tropes. Or porn. But for me, character is why I write, and it all flows from there. Whatever gets you daydreaming, making up scenes in your head, whatever gives you a rush of emotion when you read other fics or revisit the canon, whatever holes in the worldbuilding are bugging you enough to write fix-its, let that inspire you.

And then - find the words. I'm a stickler for grammar and spelling, so I'm going to say, learn the rules. For one thing, it will help you say what you want to say. It will seduce readers to your point of view. And then? Just start. Think about a useful or exciting entry point, but if that makes you freeze up, just write the most urgent or colorful or heartbreaking or reverse-engineered idea you've had recently, something that has power over you. Even if all you have to say at first is You're my fave and you deserve nice things, find a way to show that. Show your fave getting everything they ever wanted. (And then have them lose it all because you also love angst, and the potential for writing comfort (or not) is just around the corner.) You want to tell the story that canon didn't.

Don't worry about writing a perfect fic. This is fanfiction. You can do anything. It doesn't have to be brilliant. It doesn't have to be canon-compliant. It can be the craziest shit you ever dreamed up. It can be embarrassing. Who cares? Welcome to the internet. It can fall short of what you see in your head. (Get used to that. Writers beat themselves up a lot, but it's just how human brains work.) And it means you've got another chance to write an entirely different story and cram all the things you love and didn't quite manage to capture into a whole new piece of writing. It can surprise you (who wrote that? fuck, I didn't know that about myself.) It can even be unfinished. Fanfiction doesn't have to adhere to traditional storytelling. You want an audience, well, sure, but you also want to express the thing that makes this world, these characters, mean so much to you.

You'll be disappointed sometimes, you'll get criticism sometimes, you might have to learn how to avoid professional haters. But you also, above all, get to love your work. Don't ever let anyone tell you that it's not good enough. It might need improvement - whose work doesn't? (Okay, I can think of a few, but they're exceptions.) But that story is still something to be proud of. You are allowed to love your own writing. To be happy about it. To make yourself fall even more in love with your favorite character because now you've written them. Now they belong a little bit to you.

And loving your own stories will help you keep writing. And as you keep writing, you'll eventually figure out what it is you really want to say. You'll get closer and closer to the heart of things, and better at making other people love it, too.

Okay, this is a great big bunch of blather written under pressure at work, so it's more cheerleading than nuts and bolts. I don't talk much about my own process here because I wouldn't recommend the way I write to an aspiring author, and it would only be interesting to a tiny handful of readers. But I hope at least some of this addresses the question!

So now the thing I self submitted to the good omens library rec blog has popped up, and half of me is kind of happy to see it because there’s not really a newsletter in this fandom like in HP fandom like daily snitch.

But also half of me is humiliated I did that because bringing any sort of attention to myself is not a thing I do online, let alone IRL. I’m regretting it a little, like George McFly not wanting to let anyone read his writing in the past in Back to the future. But it’ll get buried soon enough.

Meanwhile, I finally have sat-Tuesday off of work, am behind some in my one online class, and I have to build a desk from Home Depot so I am finally not using a card table for my laptop.

I am quite a bit older than 20 or 30. So, hang on a moment. My earliest fanfic experience fanfic came in the late ‘70s With Star Trek. It wasn’t very good. I read only a couple of newsletters before I set aside reading fan writing forever. My interest was, and always has been, writing my own world and characters and stories.

but that doesn’t mean that I don’t like reading fiction; to the contrary, I think that one gets better as a writer by reading other people’s writing. I have bookshelves full of fantasy and Science Fiction all through standard publishing channels. I subscribed to mainstream fantasy or science fiction magazines, writers magazines, organizations for writers and their magazines… And it doesn’t mean that I am not a fan of certain authors or books. But more of them as writers and what they could teach me even when I had favorite characters.

I worked hard at learning to write fiction. The only fanfiction I ever wrote was a stub about Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid When I was in junior high school. Otherwise, it has all been my own. And I certainly had no interest in reading other fanfiction because I “knew” from my earliest experience that it was probably trash.

So. Almost 2 years ago, while looking for information for a story I was thinking about writing, I stumbled across the Captive Prince books. And fell in love. And accidentally fell across AO3 and CP fan fiction. And— there are a fabulous number of stunningly talented writers writing superb fanfiction for it! Maybe not the same fandom as HP Because of its content, but I do notice there’s a lot of crossover. And there are a lot of stunningly talented writers writing superb fanfiction for HP, too. It caught me completely offguard. I had no idea.

After a few months of reading wonderful CP fanfiction (And a rare HP one or two), I started randomly and occasionally writing a snippet of CP fiction, too. And then this fall I wrote a ton of it For Lamen Week and then for the reverse bang.

My first fan fictions. I just turned 65.

you’re 29??! i can’t believe it!! i just turned 23 and i was feeling really ashamed of still being involved in fandom. not to mention, still reading fanfic. i know the hp fandom is really old but i always assumed the older fans just kinda left as they got older and started careers and families. now i’m starting to wonder how many of the hp (and drarry) blogs i follow are run by people that are around 30! also, i don’t wanna make it seem like i think you’re old. i honestly don’t!!! i guess i just had this idea that people naturally lose interest in their fandoms as they get older and i’m amazed (and relieved) that’s not the case!

Hi anon. I was very sad to read this because I’ve never felt ashamed to be here, and I don’t think you or anyone else should, either. It breaks my heart to see age being perceived as something “bad”, or at the very least as a factor that would make us abandon interests we had back when we were 20. I remember thinking that my life would be settled by the time I was 30, but the truth is the older you get, the more you realize you still have no idea what the fuck is going on; the difference is that accepting that brings a much needed amount of self-reflection, which hopefully will provide some wisdom/peace of mind instead of more frustrated expectations.

I can confidently say that at 29 I feel way more centered and self-assured about my interests, talents, flaws, limits and possibilities than I’ve ever felt at 20. That’s one of the reasons why I’m able to curate my fandom experience so well nowadays, and that brings me a level of joy and satisfaction I didn’t use to have because back then I didn’t know myself that well - and that’s okay! Experimenting is part of growing up, and that step is as important as it’s painful.

I get that everyone deals with aging differently, but to assume that fandoms and blogs are run by 20 year olds is to ignore fandom history itself. We didn’t invent fandom; it’s been around for almost as long as our ages combined, and maybe even longer - I don’t know for certain if Star Trek and The Man from U.N.C.L.E were the very first ones. We owe these folks so much; they were the foundation of fic spaces, they’re at the origins of Tumblr and AO3 communities, and the fics we celebrate as ‘classics’ today were all written by them. Consider this: the first HP book was published in 1997. The fandom has been around for 20 years, which means the HP generation - those who were Harry’s age or older, and who grew up reading those stories - are now in their 40s-50s.

That doesn’t exclude younger folks from the community by any means! I just think it’s super important to acknowledge other generations’ ongoing contribution and to see this as an adult space, formed by an adult fanbase with adult interests. We’re lucky enough that they decided to stick around and share their passion and talent with us, or we wouldn’t have a catalogue of almost 50k fics (and that’s only on AO3!) at our disposal 🙌🏼

This is getting long and I apologize if I sound patronizing or rude, it’s not my intention at all! I just hope this gives you a bit of perspective because ageism in fandom is a real thing that can be really harmful not only to creators but to fans in general. Some things only click as we collect more life experience, but I hope I have helped you let go of any feelings of shame or inadequacy about reading fic or being part of any fandom. If it makes you happy, that’s all that should matter. I for one have been around for almost 20 years and I’m certainly not going anywhere ;) cheers!

I feel so bad when I don't recieve any feedback on my stories. I'm new to ffn and I discovered that it's so hard to be seen... Any advice?

There are a couple of different ways you can build an audience (though, fair warning, that audience will also come with jerks).   

Join FB fanfic groups that allow you to self-promote and do it.  I’ve noticed that most people who do this use moodboards as headers for their story.  Some to check out (and I am assuming you are a HP writer here, so sorry if you are not) would include:  Dramione for Grown Ups,  Home Away from Hogwarts,  The Death Eater Express, Strictly Dramione, Dramione Fanfiction Forum, and the Shrieking Shack Society.

Post links to your updates on tumblr.

Update regularly for a long time.  A huge part of building an audience is just posting over months and years.

@shayalonnie has set up a form on google for you to submit fics to her for her to read.  Speaking from experience, if she decides she loves your story, that will drive readers to it.

If what you write is fluffy one shots in the HP fandom, send the link to me.  I am disorganized and take a long time to get to things because I prioritize my own writing but I do eventually read all the one shots people send to me, though I don’t do organized rec lists like Shaya and @turbulenthandholding.

It used to be if you posted a link to your dramione on twitter with #dramione, it would be included in a round up newsletter.  I’ve been reduced to ranting about politics on twitter, so I’m not sure if that still holds.

Writer’s Anonymous on FFN has a number of review exchange games where you can post your work to get critical feedback on if you are concerned the reason you aren’t getting noticed is partially based in writing issues.

Harry Potter fic recs?

Im in the middle of reading this week’s edition of the Rec Centre fandom newsletter created by @hellotailor and @elizabethminkel. One of the topics covered this week are JKR’s recent tweets. It got me thinking about how to interact with the HP proper without interacting with her words, and at the moment fanfic seems like the answer!

I haven’t been active in the fandom for a while, but Oh God Not Again is definitely a fic for the ages. Most of my other reading fits into Fred x Hermione and Dean x Seamus fic because I love an underdog.

Please let me (and anyone else interested) know if you have Recs of HP fanfic that you absolutely loved (regardless of pairing). I would be especially interested in fanon works, eg Harry is Desi, the weasleys are Jewish, the DA is antifa.

What To Watch On Hulu That’s New This Week

Streamline recommends the third season of “Rick and Morty” as the new thing you should watch on Hulu this week. The platform adds the show on June 23.

Over the past couple of years, “Rick and Morty” has become more popular and more divisive. The latter is largely a product of “Rick and Morty” fans becoming known for being awful. In 2017, co-creator Dan Harmon expressed anger at his fans for harassing female writers on the staff. (The show had hired more female writers, and a contingent of sexist fans weren’t too pleased.)

Then there were the now-infamous Szechuan sauce riots. McDonald’s promised to carry a novelty sauce from the show but didn’t anticipate how high demand would be. Many stores were filled with “Rick and Morty” fans screaming at staff after they ran out of the sauce.

If you can ignore the often-terrible fandom, though, this show still has one of the best writing teams out there right now and is consistently very funny. Adult Swim just ordered 70 more episodes, so you should catch up while you can.

The 2010 movie “Shutter Island” also joins. Did you know this movie came out the same year as “Inception”? It feels like “Shutter Island” came out more than a decade ago, but maybe that’s because Leonardo DiCaprio had kind of a career shift after “Inception.” Anyway, you can also catch that movie on Amazon Prime if you want.
