Majestic and steadfast, Nandi stands as the eternal guardian of Lord Shiva’s sanctum at the Panchalingeshwara temple at Govindanahalli in Mandya district of Karnataka.
This intricately carved sculpture of Nandi - the mount of Lord Shiva - is opposite the shrine containing one of the 5 Shivalingas at the temple dated to 1238 CE. This Hoysala monument is a rare example of Panchakuta (5 shrines with 5 towers) construction.
A striking feature of this handsome Nandi is its innocent gaze and noble visage with strong and yet gentle features embodying loyalty and grace. The eye for details is remarkable and typical of the artistry of the Hoysala period as one can see part of the tail tucked beneath the right rear leg with strands of hair. The other ornamentation including the bell and the jewellery completes the picture.
