Picking at the peas on her plate “it’s yucky. Yucky green balls.” She picked one up and tossed it across the table towards her grandparents. You eat it.”
Himari just stifled a chuckle at the peas, they were not her favorite either, but trying that one on her grandparents would really not get the little one far. Much like she had expected, the comment from her parents was one she had heard many times herself in different variations with age.
“Little girls who don’t eat their vegetables cannot dance. You need the energy they give.” Mariela picked the pea up, and munched it with a smile, before she held out her hand to the little one. “Of course, if you don’t want to have enough energy to dance, and play and run in the sand, give them all to me, then I can take grampa dancing!”

How on earth she held such a straight face was beyond Himari. She also wondered if the little one would fall for it, or if she would hand off her peas. Her dad just smiled and nodded, eating his own peas just to make sure he had the energy to join her of course. They were quite the team on these things, no words were ever needed, and it was how they had gotten both her and her brother, mostly at least, to eat things they did not want.
Halia glared at her gramma for several long moments before scooping a spoonful of the dreaded peas into her mouth. She made a production of chewing the green balls before swallowing, shaking her head, grimacing “yucky.” She pushed the remaining peas onto the floor.

Mariela just shook her head at the little girl, everything was a competition for her it seemed, even the kitchen.
“Those things are two completely different things, little one. They can’t be directly compared like that. I love your dancing, I also love that kitchen.” Mariela chuckled, smiling at her granddaughter. “Not everything is a competition, I can like more than one thing without that making another thing worse.”
Halia pushed her bottom lip out, obviously dissatisfied with her Gramma’s answer.
Shaking his head Aki winked at Raelyn before smiling at their daughter. “Of course the kitchen is the best room in the house. It’s where mama makes all the yummy food you need to be able to dance for us.”
Halia’s pout slowly faded into giggles “mama’s kitten best room.” Her eyes sparkled like it was one of her best ideas. Leaning against Himari “when Uncle Caiden comes home we go to beach.”
Eyes sliding towards his sister before addressing his daughter Aki said, “don’t go making plans just yet. Uncle Caiden has to move here first and get settled. It takes a long time.”
“We help,” she insisted, “all of us help. Then we go to the beach.”
“Yes we’ll help,” Raelyn agreed “but now you have to finish eating your dinner.”

She smiled at the young one, she knew they loved their uncle Caiden, and as long as he didn’t promise her things he didn’t keep, she was very much fine with it.
“Yay,” Halia’s joyful cry was enough to keep Rae from spoiling the moment. However she did manage to shoot Himari with a sour expression. She had a whole speech prepared but her eagerness dimmed upon seeing the scowl on her husband’s face.
“Fine,” she huffed beneath her breath. It wasn’t easy letting go of her pet subject but there was plenty of time to bring the subject up again.
Eyes twinkling Aki turned to his dad “has mom showed you Rae’s kitchen yet? If not she will after dinner. I’m sure she has a million ideas for her kitchen at home.”

It wasn’t long before someone knocked on the front door. “I get it,” Halia announced, running towards the door giggling.
Throwing the door open “Grandpa.” She grabbed his hand pulling him inside “you dance wit Grandma.”
Hayota looked surprised at his grandchild, then just chuckled letting her pull him with her to where the two others were. He did like dancing, so it wasn’t too hard to get him to dance with his wife. If they ended up dancing like the little one wanted to, he didn’t really care, so he just took his wife in his arms and danced with her the way they did at home. Himari just watching them, seeing what the little one thought of this.

Himari asked her niece, “want to dance with me, little lady?” She held out a hand to Halea, with a smile and a wink. She really hoped Rae and Aki would enroll her in a dancing class, it would do her a world of good to be with other kids, and no longer be the center of the universe like she was here, it would do them good too. To see their child normal and happy.

“That’s enough of that young lady,” Aki admonished getting up and taking his daughter from her highchair “it’s time for bed.”
“No,” she kicked her legs, holding her arms out to Raelyn “mama, help.”
“Aki can’t she stay up a bit longer,” Raelyn protested “she wanted to show them another dance.”
“Little girls who want to dance shouldn’t throw their food on the floor,” he said firmly carrying his now screaming daughter from the room. He knew his parents wouldn’t tolerate such behavior and he could see now that he had been setting a bad example by letting her get away with it.

Halia is a lot like her mom. How will Aki and Raelyn handle it? Although most toddlers tend to rule the house so there may still be hope. The next chapter of Coming home is available on my WP Blog if you want to read it now. It'll be added to the queue to be posted later.

Raelyn tossed her silverware onto her plate with a loud clatter giving vent to her displeasure. “This is so not how I saw this evening going,” she pouted, feeling as if all her efforts were for nothing.
Mariela just chuckled slightly, it reminded her of her own kids and many a dinner at their house when they had been younger. “Oh don’t you worry, it’s how it is to have kids. Not every dinner will be perfect, but they will learn in the end. Both Himari and Aki gave us our fights as well.”
“Mom…”

“You were about the same with peas I seem to remember.”
Himari just shook her head, Mariela wasn’t wrong, she hated those green vegetables as a kid, and she wasn’t the biggest fan now either, but well, she had gotten to learn that there were some things worth fighting against, and vegetables were seldom worth it.
“It’s fine Rae, dinners are like this when you have small kids, I have seen many pictures of me and Aki doing similar things.”

“I’m sure Rae will be more than happy to show off her kitchen,” Aki said, giving his wife a wink and giving the hand she had resting on the table a squeeze.
“Of course,” she grinned, regaining her good humor once more.
To anyone else it would seem all was forgotten but Aki knew it was only a temporary respite. Sighing inwardly he knew he was going to have a fight on his hands once everyone left. Rae wasn’t about to give up on advocating Caiden to his sister.
“Mama’s kitten best room in the house,” Halia announced, making everyone chuckle. “Gramma like mama’s kitten? More than me dancing?”

“Yay,” Halia clapped her hands “he come back.”
“Yep that’s right,” Rae nodded looking across the table at Himari “Caiden rented a little bungalow and will be moving here. He just needs to wrap up a few things.”
Himari almost shook her head at Rae, but ended with just a general shake of her shoulders instead. It honestly, right now, didn’t matter if he was coming to live here, he would still be locked to his work, which she could understand and have no time for anything else. The only part that would change was where he lived.
“Sounds like you have an extra person to show around soon, Halia. Maybe if you’re lucky and your doctor says yes, even show him new dances.”

“I still think dancing lessons for a certain young lady here would be fun for her, try something new and learn something new. Even more things to show off to us and grandparents.”
Lips thinning showing that Himari’s earlier words had not been forgotten even if forgiven, Raelyn said “we’ll think about it. I think for now Halia needs to adjust to her new home. She may not be as well as she seems.”
Aki raised an eyebrow at her comment “we’ll see what the doctor says next week at her appointment. Then we’ll discuss the idea again.” His tone held a gentle reminder as his eyes locked with Rae’s.
“Of course,” she flashed him a smile, easing the tension somewhat around the table. “If a certain young lady is good we might even go to a festival with Uncle Caiden.”

Several minutes later “as beautiful as this is, it’s time to stop dancing and eat.” Raelyn gave her daughter a look that even Halia recognized as one she should not argue with; although it did not keep her from pushing her bottom lip out in a pout.
Tugging on Himari’s hand “Mama no fun.”
Tumblr media
Once they were all seated and their plates were full of food Raelyn glanced across at her husband than at Himari, her lips in a thin line. “I owe you an apology. I know you didn’t mean anything by your comment earlier. It’s just …” She shrugged not knowing what else to say other than it hurt for anyone to hint that her daughter wasn’t normal. Not after the years of watching her baby have the energy level of wilted lettuce.
Blinking back tears she continued “I hope we’re still friends.”
“Part of being friends is that it doesn’t end so easily, you’re stuck with me for a while longer.” Himari chuckled and winked at Rae, she knew she often acted before she thought, and that of course her words could be taken that way. It was more meant to let her just be a child, which she hadn’t been able to do before.
