Exploring Our Digestive System
Last half term, Year 4 were looking at Digestion. As always, I wanted to explore how technology can be used to enhance learning and allow them to creatively share what they have learnt. There are some fantastic consumer apps that can help with this including the fantastic Curiscope Virtuali-tee app I have previously blogged about here.
For a more in-depth tutorial for this tool, including an exclusive discount code to subscribers, click here.
There is also a fantastic Google Expedition that links to the Digestive System which allowed the learners to jump inside the body to learn about each part of the digestive system and the job it does. Again, you can access an in-depth tutorial through MrPICT.com here.
Once we had used these consumer apps to acquire knowledge, I wanted my students to use the technology to create content to show what they have learnt. This is what my pupils created using a range of apps such as Doink Greenscreen, Apple Clips and Shadow Puppets Edu.
I have posted exclusive tutorial videos for every step of the process which you can access when you subscribe to MrPICT.com. Over the past couple of weeks, I have added the option to subscribe directly through the website. There is also the option to subscribe as a school so your whole staff can access all the training videos and content.
The subscriptions options are:
Individual Teachers: £3.50 a month through Facebook - Click Here
Individual Teachers: £3.50 a month through the website or subscribe annually and save £5.
Small Schools (under 180 pupils) whole school access: £119.99 a year
Big Schools (over 180 pupils) whole school access: £199.99 a year.

Balloons over Broadway and Green Screen by Do Ink
“Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet is the true story of puppeteer, Tony Sarg. It is the perfect book for November and Thanksgiving. The story begins when Sarg was just a boy with a clever idea and a love of making still objects come to life with movement. As an adult, he became famous for his marionettes which moved as if they were living creature and were featured in the Macy’s Day Parade. We love this inspirational book and all the #STEAM creativity that students can learn and engage in because of this book. Students can be like Tony Sarg and create their own Balloons with STEAM supplies.
This project can be made into a live camera project like the above project or into a quick image like the project below. There are so many great options for students to learn and collaborate with this project. This is such a meaningful project for this time of year, where the students can be inspired to create! We hope your students love this book and project as much as we do

School Library Journal (SLJ) and Do Ink
Thank you SLJ for including Green Screen by DoInk in your article on 'Tech Tools and Tricks Librarians Can't Live Without' by Jennifer Snelling. What an incredible list of tech tools that are perfect for any library. We are so honored that Green Screen by DoInk is included with this amazing list of tools! Do Ink is under the Creating section:
"Jones uses Do Ink for maker spaces, video making, podcasting, photo projects, and student-made book talks. Because Do Ink can include images from up to three different sources, Jones uses a template made in Canva and records the kids’ book talks in front of a green screen. Then she uses Do Ink to add pictures of the book and author in the background. For students who are hesitant to share their poetry with others, she hosts a sock puppet poetry café. Kids use the sock puppets in front of the green screen, with Do Ink providing the background.
We hope you are inspired by the ideas in this article as much as we are! Thank you again SLJ.

Valentine’s Day Projects
Love it or hate it, it is that time of year again - Valentine's Day! Make Valentines Day more fun for your students and their parents by having your students create a unique project for their parents/guardians with a sweet message! We have tons of fun and easy to create projects on our Pinterest Valentines Day board. Check out all the different ideas and try the one that you like best. Most of these projects can be done independently by even the youngest of students! Older students don’t have to miss out on the fun, they can create photo booths and fun messages for each other for Valentines or ‘Galentines’ Day too!
Most importantly these projects let students problem solve, work collaboratively and creatively! We all need more connections in school this year and this is a great way to create them! You know everyone wants to get a custom Green Screen Valentine too!

Back to School 2021-2022
It is back to school time (ready or not) and we are already seeing some great back to school projects. Green Screen is a great way to get students collaborating and learning together. Green Screening can be used as a fun breaking the ice activity to start the school year. What is nice is the technology the students learn now, they can use with projects for the rest of the school year. It also grows with them as they get older and make more complicated projects. DoInk has a Pinterest board of Back to School ideas if you want to see even more great ideas. Wishing you and your students a great transition back into school for the 2021-2022 school year!

How Tech is Reinventing Arts and Digital Media Classes
This is a great blog post from EdTech Magazine on how tech is reinventing Arts and Digital Media classes. We loved seeing two extremely talented educators that we know well, being featured in this informative article. As Erika Sandstrom, a digital media teacher at Higgins Middle School in the Peabody Public School District in Massachusetts says in the article:
“The No. 1 goal in every school district now is social-emotional learning, and we use the green screen and other digital tools to encourage positive self-talk or making a thoughtful GIF for someone else,” Sandstrom says. “I like to say to my students, when you need to escape stressful thoughts and be in the magical present moment, there’s nothing better than getting on the computer and doing some art.”
Another amazing Edtech Educator is Jon Belonio, who is a visual arts educator at Downers Grove Grade School District 58 in Illinois. As he noted from this past year:
All K–6 students in Belonio’s schools have their own tablets, he says, so when COVID-19 hit, he knew exactly what to do to keep his art classes going. During the schools’ last days in-person, he had everyone take pictures of their works and upload them to the student engagement site Seesaw. Then he turned to a green screen and YouTube to create and post videos of the art lessons students were to complete on their own from home.
“My job my whole career has been to prove that art is everywhere and can come from anything,” Belonio says. The work his students have done over the past year — outside of his art room and through tech of all kinds — “has really shown that to be true.”
There are so many inspiring and exceptional projects from both of these teachers highlighted in the article. We hope that it gives you some new ideas for your classroom for the next school year!
These two great educators will also be presenting at the Green Screen Summit on July 7-10th if you want to learn even more.

Easter Projects and DoInk
It has certainly been a strange year, but we are all slowly getting back to a new normal. The students are so excited to be back in school more. Now we are all looking for some fun ways to be together and connect. The Green Screen App allows the students to be at a safe distance from each other, but still have fun and be creative. It even allows you to travel anywhere without leaving your classroom! It also allows you to pose in front of any subject matter! We have a great Pinterest board with lots of project ideas for Easter that is perfect for this week. We hope the Green Screens can inspire you in the weeks ahead to think of something fun to do with your students.  Image courtesy of 22ReneeW

Thanksgiving Projects and Ideas
The month of November is a great time for students to think about what they are thankful for, even in a very odd school year like this one.  With this month of reflection time coming up, we see a lot of great Green Screen projects. We love the projects created for the book “Balloons over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet. Which allows students to create their own balloons as a STEM project and then see them floating in the Macy’s Day parade, just like STEMDayWithGray students have done in the photo below.
There are so many ways to be creative with your students this month and discuss being grateful. We have a whole Pinterest board for Thanksgiving projects, that will give you even more great ideas. We hope they inspire your next project!

What’s Possible with Green Screens in the Classroom
Thank you Jennifer Gonzalez, Justine Bruyère and  Cult of Pedagogy for this excellent blog post on ‘What’s Possible with Green Screens in the Classroom.’ What a great overview of what you can do in your classroom with a Green Screen and the DoInk App.
Green screen technology (also known as chroma keying) offers so many engaging opportunities for students to learn.  It’s pretty easy to do, it can be done on a very low budget, it works in lots of subject areas and grade levels, and it’s even possible while teaching remotely.
Why Use Green Screens?
Far from being just a cool novelty, green screen projects have the potential to give students deep, creative learning experiences. Bruyère points out a few key characteristics that make projects that use this technology so special:
They generate embodied learning. When students put themselves into green screen projects—whether it’s to take on the role of a character in a book, a journalist, an investigator, or an explorer—their bodies and emotions are actively participating in the learning process, which deepens the learning. This mind-body connection is at the heart of the embodied learning approach, which posits that the brain is activated by physical movement.
They lend themselves to inquiry. If they are well-designed and give students autonomy and choice, green screen projects are perfect for inquiry learning, where students do their own research and problem-solving around big questions they’re naturally interested in. This kind of work is much more engaging than what we typically see in traditional classrooms. “We’re moving away from (tasks) where teachers give the problem to the students and students fill out the single right answer. We’re kind of moving more into sociocultural perspectives where students have buy-in, where they’re excited about the work, where they’re choosing pathways that are truly interesting to them,”
We do hope you check out this excellent blog post and that it inspires you for your next Green Screen project!

Green Screen Mask Tool
Thank you Bethany Deputy  for this great tutorial on how to use the Mask Tool in #DoInk. This tool was used by Ms. Deputy's students to create pictures to go along with their mysterious door writing prompt, using the GreenScreen by DoInk iPad App. The project came out great and we really appreciate this great tutorial that she created on our mask tool, showing just how easy it is to use!

Show What You Know with Math Problems
We love seeing students ‘show what they know’ and it’s so even better when it is high school students and math problems! Thank you Ashley Taplin for showing us how to create this project. Ms. Taplin is using DoInk GreenScreen with her high school students to create this interactive project! This is what Ms. Taplin had to say about the project:
“The teacher I planned this project with had her students create posters on a topic and solve the problem using multiple representations prior to telling her about Do Ink. When I presented her with the idea of using Do Ink to communicate their ideas it seemed to fit perfectly with using their posters as the background image and talking points.”
Here is the blog on how Ms. Taplin created this project and a great video of  examples. We hope this inspires you for your next math project too!

History Studies with Green Screen by DoInk
Thank you Lane Kulovitz for the great images and showing how to put students into a History Project. This type of project is excellent for older students, where they can research a historical event then use their knowledge to present on that topic. They can even take their likeness and put themselves back in that setting, as these students did. They just need to use the filters in the iPad camera roll and save the Green Screen images as black and white.
Lane Kulovitz students are using these images for a Holocaust museum project, These students used GreenScreen by DoInk to recreate a photo. Once they printed their photos, the students used HP Reveal to add a video overlay where they reflected on the historical event.

Student steps in when school’s picture day is cancelled
We love this story in the Chatham Kent This Week Newspaper. We are just so impressed with this student Luc Arbour too! Luc is shown above with a green screen, an iPad with the DoInk  App and surrounded by beautiful Christmas cards featuring all the awesome photos that he took himself. Luc photographed his peers and then had them all choose a background, then he turned those photos into Christmas cards, so they could show their parents. In all, he produced about 160 cards. It is so impressive!
“A Grade 7 student at École Ste-Catherine in Pain Court has turned his lens on his fellow students to give them each a special item to take home to their families this holiday season.
Luc Arbour used an iPad and a green screen setup at school to photograph his peers in front of their choice of six seasonal backgrounds. He grouped the students with their siblings and turned the photos into Christmas cards they could show their parents.”
Luc Arbour, who has Down syndrome, said he has always liked taking photos and enjoys using the iPad both in school and at home. Luc really is a pro at using the Green Screen App and bringing the Holiday spirit to all his classmates and their families this Holiday season. We are just so inspired by him and hope you are as well!
