hey everyone - here's another quick tutorial.

this one if i had to name it would just be "points shop made easy". i realized a lot of people didn't already know this recently so i wanted to make sure i shared the information.

here's a summary of what i do in the video:

click fine member

use a negative amount (-100) to reward a user points, use a positive amount (100) to take points from a user

go into your acp, under ibstore find moderator logs, you'll see it logged there automatically

Omg first of all welcome to the land of Jcink forums (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧

If you're looking for jcink rp's to join, I would absolutely recommend one of the ad blogs here on tumblr. Rpings and All Things Roleplay are still the big ones I think, and you'll see a variety of rp sites cycle through them. Find a site you like and instructions on how to join and get started are usually laid out on the forum. Most forums advertised there are public, so you just read the rules, register an account, and get into it. Sometimes, you'll see a private site (like Sunveiled) being advertised, which have their own rules for getting started.

These days, most forums also have a discord server attached to them for easy chatting and plotting. But all/most of the actual rp'ing goes on on the forum itself. I'd also recommend checking out the discord Jcink Community Corner (JCC), which is a server run by rpers on the Jcink platform. We talk about rp'ing, designing forums, and advertising over there. And everyone's really helpful!

Rpings also has a handy guide on How to Roleplay on Jcink that might be worth looking at. It's a little outdated, but if you're not used to writing on a forum platform, it's quite helpful.

Roleplay Is Not Dead Nor Doth It Sleep

There's a post going around about how text-based, freeform roleplay is dead, and I was typing up a huge response to this, with an accompanying guide on how to find roleplayer in 2024, when I realized it might have a bigger reach if I made it its own post. So here's that guide.

I hesitate to say that there isn't a problem with the new format of social media making roleplay more difficult to find, but in the desire to make that point, the OP of the original post has left people with the idea that there's no way for them to get into freeform text roleplay in 2024. Which just isn't true! Here, look at all the ways.

Forums

The link to RPG-Directory to find roleplaying forums is a good start. Once you've found a forum RPG, even if you don't join, there's usually an 'advertising' section on that forum where other forum RPGs post their ads - this may help you to find forums that don't advertise on RPG-D.

Another really good forum to find roleplay on is Barbermonger. Barbermonger is focused on connecting people for one-on-one roleplays.

This last one's going to be weird, but it turns out that there are still people seeking roleplay on the Gaia Online forums after all these years. I think this is delightfully retro and then crowd there seems a little older than average. No pre-existing knowledge of Gaia required.

You can also find forum roleplay groups (as well as tumblr and Discord groups) right here on Tumblr. Usually, the thing to do is to use the search function - search for "[genre] rp" or "[fandom] rp" and sort by "latest." (If you sort by Top, you are likely to find dead RPs.) For example, here's fantasy rp, historical rp, and marvel rp. You can also try jcink rp, as most roleplay forums are hosted on Jcink these days, or discord rp, depending on your favored platform.

There are also tumblr blogs specifically dedicated to advertising roleplays. I'm not super familiar with these nowadays, but just in the process of searching those tags above, I found these:

It's a little heavier on smut-only roleplays than other platforms mentioned here, but it's not impossible to find sexless, plot-based roleplay here either. It's a little janky, but what it needs more than anything is a bigger user base. Their Discord server is also a good place to find one on one discord roleplay. It is, of course, free, but if you want to support its development, they have a patreon.

ChatGPT will won't use one adjective if it can use two, and it has a habit of styling sentences in a particular format, so where a human might write "Sally is an introvert" chatgpt will write "Quiet and introspective, Sally keeps her thoughts to herself."

Likewise, physical descriptions will be things like "deep, raven-dark hair", "striking green eyes" (it almost always uses striking to describe eyes), "comfortable, well-worn robes", etc.

It also does this thing where (because it's pulling from massive datasets) it always uses the most overused tropes and stereotypes associated with anything it's writing, so you'll often get descriptions that are just obviously silly or show lack of research for the topic.

To give an example of this, I've met RPers who wrote artist characters and didn't know how long it takes oils to dry so their artworks were finished in record time (and I, as an artist, find that annoying), however chatgpt will generate a passage that describes a character as always covered in smudges of paint on their face and hands. A real writer is unlikely to write that.

I can't tell the difference between chat gpt writing and just boring, lifeless writing. Like what if they're just bad? How can you guys tell? I've run across a few people who make me wonder if English is their first language or if they're just bad or new etc etc. So many variables and excuses for uninspired basic writing. How can you tell? As an admin I don't know what to look out for in a way that feels bullet proof or fool proof.

thank you for this ask!! i would love to answet it fully and completely but it would be a very long answer!! basically a breakdown of how to scope out an rp that will fit you.

here are some broad based ideas to get you started as you shop for an rp:

check activity. find an rp that aligns eith your preferred activity level -- if you want to perfect every post and trade replies weekly, look for evidence of that, if you want daily replies, look for that

check recently approved characters to see if they match the vibe you want -- a lot of times the lore doesn't match the vibe of the site, so something can look really cool based on the lore but actually have become a different vibe over time

pern rp particularly has a pretty bad time with staffing all of their ranker-players. if eventually attaining a ranking/leadership/plot relevant character is your thing, look for evidence that the admin team does that (evidence, not them sayimg so in the rules)

here's some things i do that may not work for you:

i don't bother to read the rules until i've basically made up my mind if i'm going to try to play there. i go for the dragon info page (and wher page if the site does whers) and read through the description of the canon and special colors. are greens forced/expected to be stupid sluts? are bronzes forced to be noble knightly chads? biiig pass. the way these pages are written can give you a great idea about how flexible and story-oriented the site intends to be. i lean hard either "let me do anything" or "make the restrictions interesting" so ymmv

for jcink rps: go to the bottom of the site, get "today's active topics" and change it to see the past month. pay special attention to who is active in the rp. look at their characters. see if the vibe is right for you

check out the adopts!!! mega points if the admins are cleatly trying to get people to enter leadership positions. big demerits if there is some kind of ban on newbies having leadership. (buying rankers can be neutral or bad, it depends on the site)

for getting into pern rps specifically:

for this purpose i'm going to assume you, nonnie, are somewhat familiar with the books and at least passingly familiar with the art and commentary in the pern tag here on tumblr. i assume you like the books?

it is very important to remember that if the site you are looking at is up front in praising the books, says they really love them, etc., this is a BAD SIGN.

pern rp fandom is (maybe a little bit uniquely?) in an argument with canon, not in conversation with it. there are so many aspects of canon that just suck in an rp setting (ex. lifetime appointment of the senior weyrwoman, meaning the only way to shake that up is for her to die, everything about flights) that even the most canon weyr has yo make concessions to make it playable/comfortable in a group setting.

so if a site up front is like "we're canon. not like those other sites. we actually care about the lore." this is actually a dogwhistle for blatant transphobia, homophobia, favoritism, and really shit moderation. likewise, a tone of anger or vitriol towards more canon-leaning sites is a red flag, they tend also to have extremely narrow views on what the "right" way to play is.

the best way to play a pern game is to take the books as a framework, like baking a cake, that's your flour and egg, you're getting the structure from there but your cake isn't going to taste good unless you get a site willing to spice it up with its little extras and go to the effort of putting some basic butter and baking soda in there to fluff it up. pern in the novels does not work as an open, public rp, it's not a recipe for cake, so everyone adjusts it, the people who say they don't are Lying.

i don't feel comfortable recommending an rp for you nonnie without knowing what you're most interested in. i have heard that at least one site is just starting up so that could be a great place to start.

It was a gravelled rasp for the final moments of air as his strength waned. Feyd savored every moment of it. Knowing from experience what was expected to come next. “You fought well, Atreides.” He murmured, that too was genuine. It had been a long time since Feyd had faced someone so fierce.

Straightening back up and appraising his prize. Looking back to Chani once more. “Come willingly and I’ll allow your people to take his body. If you don’t, I’ll feed him to my darlings and you’ll be made to come anyway. Choice is yours.” He'd allow her to keep her blade in hand, for now. Who knows, she might try and make his already good day a little better. He assumed she'd be more willing to follow him out of the room if she felt safer from him with a blade in hand. Not that it mattered either way. Special attention would be given to the special pet.

hello! so another tutorial - this time on grid and auto resizing images inside it with an emphasis on responsiveness and making that easier on you. basically, this tutorial should be named team no math, but we're call this the grid images tutorial.

i did have someone message that i don't speak very eloquently and i want to apologize. i try to explain in a way that anyone can understand and i also speak in a train of consciousness, unprepared way so please don't think i am uncaring in that, i'm just trying to show some small tips and tricks in a straightforward, won't take up much time way. i will try to speak with a little more thought and less filler words, but i can't promise to be perfect in that since this is over video versus text.

anyway, the template i'm using as an example is free to use as a base, without credit, same with all the others in my tutorials so far, so long as you are using it to actually make your own. i would like to say with this one please don't use it with no significant changes and try to claim it as your own. throw some credit in your guidebook or something, i don't mind, just throw a bone on that one because at that point it is solely my template. but even then, you're free to use it with credit.

what jcink is & how it works

jcink is a forum platform made for the hosting of roleplay sites. it's similar to proboards, boards, or invisionfree but many prefer it over those for all of its unique features.

jcink is not a website, but rather a forum host

each jcink site would be comparable to a collective mewe group, or the collection of blogs that make up a tumblr rp

jcink is free with a paid $9.99 option for premium which allows jcink sites to host 18+ content and gives extra storage etc. more info can be found on that here

here is a dummy site using the default skin made to help teach you how to navigate a jcink forum.

what you're viewing when you first open that link is the board index. this is essentially the home page.

most sites will not look identical to this, and most sites do not use the default jcink skin but rather custom ones.

registering & editing your profile

every site's board index will have a login / register button and a list of the main forums on the site. some, you may have to register an account first before having access to the forums.

you'll use the register button to make a new account, or the login one if you already have one.

you may register on the dummy site to practice. most jcink sites use character names (first last or last first) for accounts, but you can register with whatever username you want for the dummy site.

this is the registration form. some sites will require additional information, but all fields on the left must be filled out to make an account. email addresses can be used for more than one account.

after registering, you'll have full access to be able to post on the site as well as access to be able to edit your profile.

clicking on 'my controls' on the dummy site will take you to where you can edit your profile.

there are several fields set up so that you can practice setting up / filling out a profile. you can type an answer for 'age' and 'pronouns' and link to an image in the 'avatar' field. any image, it won't show up anywhere on the board for you on this skin. when you've filled them out, clicking 'amend my profile' will save the information.

on most sites, this will include both your ooc information and your character information. most sites designate which is which.

you may also upload a gif or image under 'edit avatar settings'. some sites require this or use it for their graphics on their skins. there is a file size maximum for this! i suggest a 100x100 gif unless the site says otherwise.

if you register with the wrong name or at any point want to change the name of your account (or in most cases character) you'll do that under the 'change username' link in the same area.

you are welcome to test both changing usernames and uploading an avatar on the dummy site as well!

this is also where you can find your messenger (if there is no link on the board index, but most sites will have one), subscribed topics / forums, as well as all the settings for your account.

sub accounts & switching accounts

most jcink sites (which are not sandbox sites) require one account per character. i'll explain sandbox sites later.

if you wish to make a new account (for example, when you're making a second or further character), you'll click the 'edit sub accounts' link.

this will pull up a link of all your existing sub accounts, as well as the option to register a new account.

you are welcome to test the register a new account option on the dummy site. it will automatically add the account under yours as a sub account.

on jcink (unlike on tumblr) sub accounts have all the same permissions and abilities as main accounts, and your notifications for any subscribed topics, tags, messages etc can be pushed to your main account so you won't miss them.

to switch accounts from one to another, you'll simply use the switch accounts option which you can find usually somewhere in the header or top of the skin. in our case, it's next to your username and the log out button near the top.

since this got so long, there will be additional posts for each of the subsequent sections. i'll try to post them all in a timely manner! next up will be forum structures and how to navigate forums.

With Finchstar of StormClan dead, Rockdove must travel to the Whisperstone to be blessed with her new name and nine lives. But how could she possibly lead this angry and grief-wracked Clan through leafbare? Will they survive, or will their growing hatred for TalonClan tear them apart?

It's surreal to be here after taking a long hiatus around 2021. I'm used to having "missing e", a dozen extensions, and all of my pretty post formatting. It seems tumblr has tidied things up to make formatting easier. Back then, I used to copy/paste blank spaces, pretty symbols, and emojis, indent all of my paragraphs, and then use a bunch of key commands to select and make my font size small and neat! Haha! I don't have any problem with people who do that, it was a style choice for writers and roleplayers.

I was part of the tumblr roleplay community and many other rp communities across the internet, including Gaiaonline, jcink, and proboards. I did this hobby for about 16 years before I started to take my faith seriously in 2020-2021. To clarify faith, I was never really a believer or follower of Christ until I was BORN AGAIN in January 2023! Hallelujah! Note: I am not saying Christians cannot role play or enjoy writing as a way to develop characters, stories, etc. As long as it's not used to write content that would make you sin and it's not becoming an obsession.

Before that, I was depressed and detached from reality. I chased short-lived satisfaction in p**nography and alcoholism. I hyperfixated on the horror genre, supernatural & horror anime, tv series, video games, movies, and more. I felt empty all the time, had deep loneliness & despair, a void within me, & I filled it with those addictions.

I had insomnia from late nights living my double life. I was hateful, rude, condescending, competitive, swore all the time, & angry. I had a history of identifying as a bisexual, dated other girls online, and frequently played male roles during role play. I had gender dysphoria, went by 'khan', or 'khanivore'. I internalized a lot of it and would act out by doing drag king and drag cosplay IRL and roleplaying hypermasculine male characters. I began identifying as bi or pansexual, and was uncomfortable being a woman IRL and roleplaying females, even with the few I attempted to portray.

I attended many conventions to portray my comfort characters that I also roleplayed. When the convention was over, I felt like my heart was being burned alive & there was nothing to fill that void. I was never satisfied and sought after dozens of rp communities to take up my time so I could idolize playing hypermasculine male characters in the roleplay communities I was a part of.

Wrote hundreds of thousands of words portraying s*xual fantasies with males & females (which was part of my p***ography addiction). I obsessed over becoming male characters; thinking their thoughts, living their lives, not my own. I was hateful & manipulative in the relationships I sought to portray, breathing threats and vicious gossip against others. I became oppressed by demons while playing sinful music that glorified death, sex, and destruction, created vision boards that made me think of these characters, obsessively memorized their dialogues, and did some crazy forms of method acting. These characters had their own birthdays & astrology signs that I celebrated.

I saw many friendships made, torn apart, and savagely destroyed due to the toxicity of the community. Without Christ, people unhealthily hyperfixate on their idols and become jealous of other people writing better, portraying a certain character better, and seeking all types of 'shipping' relationships that don't go well. I know because that's what I did. I was so competitive that I plagiarized a lot of my ideas and writings from other roleplayers. I hid it for a long time.

But JESUS set me free! He had been knocking on the door of my heart. I did not seek Him, I wanted to live in my filth, I loved my sin. But HE sought after me & my heart slowly softened. And I also had to RESPOND to Him, I chose to finally give my life to him. My eyes began to open. I love being a woman, a daughter of God, enjoying feminine things; such as wild flowers, cottagecore, and dresses. I don’t share this testimony to glorify myself; don’t want the wrong attention or things my old self would have gloated over. I share this testimony of where I WAS, to show where JESUS SET ME FREE!

Seek Jesus - He isn’t religion, He’s a real person, the son of God, who was sent to die for our sins. Someone who wants a relationship with you. He wants to set you free from pain. He can give you answers & true identity; not the CULTure.

If the Bible says we are all sinners (Romans 3:23), (1 John 1:10), that our sins have separated us from God (Romans 5:10, 2 Corinthians 5:18) then you see why I urge you to repent (turn away) from your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved. (Acts 16:30-31)

hellos. dusting off my old sideblog to throw up this request bc that feels like a good idea. i've responded to a couple other searches, so i'm realistically not looking to take on too many more. little bit about me, i'm a 29 man, live in the central timezone [ i think technically it's cdt bc it's currently july... but don't quote me on that ], used to consider myself a reader reader but me and the books have been beefing these past few months so that isn't occurring as frequently. maybe because i've been giving rp more attention. i've been rping since at least 2009, but most of that has was on forums like proboards/invisionfree/jcink. i have only recently really been a discord rp girlie

really only looking for m/m plots at this time. mayhaps one day i will go back to doing hetero ships, but for the time being that's not really something that interests me. i don't have a robust collection of muses that i pull out of rotation, that's just never been how i rp... if you see a guy on my main blog [ blakegallo ] the odds are that i would use them as a face. because i cut my teeth on forums i do typically only use actors, musicians, and the occasional model as faces; i typically steer clear of people who social media people. it's really just a matter of personal preference. i am willing to consider a fandom based rp, but would prefer something that is more oc x oc.

as far as preferences go i do write in the third person past tense. i don't really have any interest in breaking the discord message character limit for replies. i would never do a one liner, but a nice well developed paragraph or two is usually good enough for me. i like there to be something to respond to and get a nice back and forth going. i've seen a lot in my decade plus in the rp community and i've definitely done responses that are what the girlies call novella length now and that's just not something i'm super invested in returning to at this time. i don't have any interest in rping in dms, i think that things are just more organized in a private server. i also prefer for new threads to be individual channels just because i find that easier to scroll back through than one general channel, but that's me. i am a tupperbox girlie... and so i do have a slight preference for using them. it's not a requirement by any means, i have more 1x1s that don't use them currently than do, but just throwing that out there. i also find that doing something mumu is just easier for me with the tupperbot, but we can make it work if you aren't for it.

as a sidenote, i also do really love text threads. in my time perusing the the tags i'm not sure if this common because so many of the requests i see are for the novella level girlies. but sometimes i might have time for some quick banter between our characters. i also find that characters texting leads to where a next thread should go. as a vibes girlie i just like letting the characters sort things out sometimes than us as muns going back and forth figuring out where the plot should take them next.

plotting for me tends to be more organic. i really don't like to get too far ahead of ourselves. to me it's like writing a romance novel, we know these characters are eventually going to get together, but the journey to that destination can be whatever we make for it. so the ups and downs and angst along the way is what makes it fun. obviously i'm all for tossing ideas back and forth about how we think we should handle something or where we should go next, but i don't really have any interest in outlining the whole journey and then just hitting the beats.

so please be 21+, 25+ honestly would be even better and like this if you're interested. i might read the occasional high fantasy book, but that's not a thing i am all that interested in. i might be up for something vaguely paranormal, but i'm really more a regular person writer. give me the lives and the rich and famous or mess happening in suburbia... i'll reach out from my main blog in tumblr dms and we can go from there if we think it could be a good fit.
