You yawned, looking down at the time on your laptop and realizing it was well past 3 am, Pete’s usual arrival time. You frowned, checking your phone to see if he had texted you that rehearsals were running late.

And just as your fingers touched the plastic phone case, the door to Pete’s apartment-basement opened, revealing the man himself. He looked exhausted, even for himself. The bags under his eyes sunk deeper than usual and his slouch was worse than ever.

He found you sitting up, blanket over your lower half, laptop in lap, and he smiled lazily. He slumped over to the foot of the bed and fell face forward into the mattress. You giggled as his face landed next to your waistline, moving your laptop to the small table besides you as Pete kicked his shoes off. You reached and pulled Pete by his forearms to lay his head in your lap, the man making no effort to help you except flipping over to look at you.

You ran your fingers through his hair, smiling down at him. “Hi baby,” You spoke softly as he snuggled further into your body. “How was work?”

Pete hummed, eyes closing at the feeling of your gentle fingers combing through his locks. “Long. Lorne was in a bad mood and the host made us rehearse everything like 3 times.”

You frowned, “I’m sorry.” You shifted so your back was resting against the headboard and pulled Pete so he was cuddled into your chest, back against your front. You wrapped your arms around his waist, rubbing his stomach with your thumb.

He smiled, taking the phone from your hands, and gazing at the picture. “Almost as cute as you.” He mumbled, making you giggle. You pressed another kiss to the side of his head, and then another, and then a few more in quick succession, making him laugh.

You loved to hear him laugh, especially on days like these where he was feeling down. “Did you get a chance to eat?” You asked quietly after a few moments of silence.

“No.” He followed his statement with a groan, “I worked through dinner and wanted to see you as soon as possible so I didn’t stop.”

You nodded with a smile on your face, touched that he was so eager to come home to you. “I can make you something,” you offered. He rubbed small circles to the top of your hand and let out a small hum of agreement. “What do you want?”

“Do we have stuff to make mac n cheese?” He asked.

You let out a small giggle at the childlike sound of his request, “I can check. You just want mac n cheese?”

“I have been craving mac n cheese for like three days.” You laughed at his confession, moving your arms, and trying to get out from under him.

He refused to let you leave, laying over your lap completely to keep you sitting. “Pete I can’t make anything if you don’t let me stand up.”

He groaned, turning to hug your middle, his head buried in your stomach, “don’t want you to leave.”

You let out a small chuckle, running a hand through his hair, “do you wanna come cook with me?” He shook his head no. “Okay well I have to get up, so you have to let go of me.” He shook his head again. “Pete, I will drag you to the kitchen if you don’t let go.”

He laughed, looking up at you with tired eyes. “I’m like a koala bear.” You could hear in his voice just how tired he was, and you weren’t sure if he would be able to stay awake long enough to eat any food you made.

“Yes, you are, babe.” You sighed, using all your force to move your feet to dangle off the bed, Pete’s hands still around your waist. “Pete, let go.” You said, giggling lightly.

He let you go long enough for you to stand up before standing up himself and wrapping his arms around you again, this time from behind you. You sighed, leaning your head back against his chest, knowing he would make you walk in this position.

The two of you waddled to the kitchen, Pete pressing lazy kisses to your neck the entire way there. You got out the ingredients for mac n cheese, setting them out on the counter. “Is cheddar okay?” you asked, turning your neck to meet his eyes, and finding a soft smile on his face. He nodded, pressing a quick, sweet kiss to your lips.

You preheated the oven and set a pot of water on the stove to boil, Pete finally moving off of you to jump onto the counter, grabbing handfuls of cheese as you began to grate it. You gave him a joking glare, which he returned with a wide smile.

Once the water began to boil you added the macaroni, mentally making a note of what time you would need to take it off the stove. You put butter on a saucepan, letting it melt as you measured out the milk, flour, cheese, and half and half. You added the ingredients and mixed, draining the noodles after six minutes and adding the sauce.

You moved to one of the cupboards above your head, searching for a dish to put your mixture into. You could see the glass pan above you, but you knew reaching it would require you growing an extra three inches. You frowned, preparing to jump up onto the counter when you felt a hand around your waist. “imagine being short.” Pete said with a chuckle, grabbing the pan with ease.

You turned around, pouting at him as he set the glass on the counter. His arms went to rest on the counter on either side of you, leaning down to be closer to you. “You’re mean.” You said, crossing your arms.

He laughed, pressing a kiss to your lips. “And you’re adorable,” he mumbled, kissing you again. His lips moved so well with yours, fitting perfectly together. Pete deepened the kiss, making you lean backwards with a smile. He whined, trying to kiss you again.

“Food, Petey.” You said, pointing to the stove. He sighed, moving his hands to let you move back over to your spot and finish making the food. Instead of returning to his counter, he followed you, wrapping his arms around your middle  from behind and resting his head on your shoulder. You continued to work despite the man weighing you down, swatting his hands away when he tried to take pieces of pasta.

You pushed him back as you opened the oven, placing the glass pan with macaroni in it and setting the microwave timer for 20 minutes. Once you were done, Pete spun you around to face him. His hands rested on your waist, and you put your own around his neck.

“Dance with me” he mumbled, forehead resting against yours.

You giggled softly, “there’s no music.”

“We don’t need music.”

Pete started swaying you both gently, slowly spinning around the room. Your eyes were on each other the whole time, nothing else mattering but each other. Despite the lack of music and the tiredness in both of your eyes, it felt magical.

You didn’t notice Pete’s mom enter the kitchen, nor did you notice the smile on her face as she took out her phone and recorded the two of you. You didn’t notice anything other than Pete.

Soundflower Extension is not an audio recorder. It is an extension for Mac OS. Soundflower is designed to create a virtual audio output device that can also work as an input. It changes the route of audio and that helps to record internal audio on Mac. You need to download and install the Soundflower Extension before we move towards the process of recording the internal audio.

Steps to Download and Install Soundflower on Mac:

Open a Web Browser on your Mac and go to Soundflower Website.

Find out Soundflower and select it to open its info page.

Select the given link to go to Github page.

Download Soundflower Extension and Install the same on your Mac.

1. Get better zoom

TextEdit offers a zoom feature with two sizes: tiny and huge. Not very practical when you want to write something and see other windows on your Mac. You can access it from the View menu: Actual size is the size of the page set in File > Page Setup. You can also choose to Zoom In (Command-Shift-. [period]) or Zoom out (Command-Shift-, [comma]), but unlike most word processors, you can’t pick a zoom percentage.

There’s a top-secret gesture, however, that lets you fine-tune TextEdit’s zoom. Just pinch on a trackpad, either inward or outward, to zoom in smaller increments. (Sorry, there’s no way to do this with a mouse.) With a bit of practice, you’ll find the right size, and it will be a lot easier to work with your TextEdit documents.

2. Make quick lists

If you need to make a list—a to-do list, or an outline—you can choose from a number of list styles from the Format > List menu. You can also choose list styles from the List bullets and numbering button in the toolbar. (Note: You need to be in Rich Text mode to make lists. If you don’t see a toolbar with formatting buttons, choose Format > Make Rich Text, or press Command-T.)

But if you just want a simple list that uses hyphens, or if you want to do some quick brainstorming and then format your list later, here’s a tip that will save you a lot of time. Press Option-Tab, either at the beginning of a line, or at any location in a paragraph, and that text will change to an indented list paragraph preceded by a hyphen. When you’ve finished brainstorming, select all your list items, then choose Format > List to choose another type of bullet or numbering.

3. Add active links

If you’re writing a document that has links to webpages in it, it’s often best that these links be active; when the reader clicks them, you want the webpage to open in a browser. But, if you paste a link in TextEdit, it won’t be active.

However, you can save your TextEdit documents so people using Word—for example, on a PC—can read them.

There are two ways to do this. If your document is in Rich Text Format, then it’s an RTF document, which Word, or just about any other word processor, can read. But you can also save a file in a specific Word format. Choose Save, then, from the Save dialog box, click the File Format menu and choose one of the Word formats. If you’re not sure which to choose, Word 97—as old as it is—is probably the safest.

If you’ve already saved an RTF document, you’ll need to duplicate it before changing the format. Choose File > Duplicate, and then File > Save and choose the format.

5. Embed files

TextEdit’s default RTF format is a special file format called Rich Text Format Directory, which is a bundle, or a type of folder that can contain text and files. That means you can add photos, videos, music files, and even applications.

Let’s say you’re creating a document with a recipe. You might want to add photos you’ve taken to remind you of what the final dish should look like. Just drag a photo into your TextEdit document, where you’d like it to be. When you do this, TextEdit will ask if you want to convert the file to RTFD format; accept this change.

Unlike in most word processors, you won’t be able to tweak your image: You can’t crop it, resize it, rotate it, or apply shadows or borders. So if you want to do any of these, you need to do so before adding the photo.

But you can also add videos, music files, and more. Just drag any file into a TextEdit document. Bear in mind that any item you add to a TextEdit file makes the file larger, so if you want to send it by email, be careful not to put in too much.

6. Type faster with auto-complete

Tired of typing out long words? Do you have doubts about how a long word is spelled? Save time using OS X’s auto-complete feature in TextEdit.

Let’s say you need to type the word “transcendence.” Start typing the first few letters, such as “tran.” Press Option-Escape, and an auto-complete menu displays. Use the Down Arrow key to find the word you want, then press Return to have TextEdit complete the word for you. This can be quicker than looking up a word in a dictionary.

Alas, the OS X dictionary doesn’t contain facinerious, so you’ll have to look that one up yourself.

TextEdit’s got plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Check the app’s Help menu for more about creating tables, formatting text and other great features. You may find that TextEdit is all you need to get your writing done.

Sometimes when managing word processing or text documents you might want to save the file in a compressed JPEG format or other similar picture format. I was recently asked how to do this by a Mac user, who was looking for a way to better manage a text document for presenting it in Web pages, but who was also interested in placing a formatted text file as an object in presentations and other Word processing documents.

Not only does converting a text file to an image allow for easier handling when embedding in other documents, but it also allows for easier drawing of annotations and other items on the document when discussing and presenting it.

There are a couple of ways to save documents to an image format. Sometimes programs may specifically support saving to a JPEG, TIFF, or other rasterized format, but since many don't you can take advantage of a couple of technologies built in to OS X that will allow you to do this.

Screenshots

Vim is available for all the major desktop platforms (and some minor ones) as well as iOS and Android, but makes few concessions for beginners. Vim is an expansion of the Unix vi editor, and its old school design could be a little intimidating if you're used to modern Windows software, but it's a superb text editor nonetheless. The first is the use of screenshots, which is an excellent way to quickly snap a sample picture of the screen, a window, or a selection of the screen. You can then import the resulting image (by default it's a PNG file) into numerous applications.

While screenshots are useful and convenient, they're limited primarily because the screen resolution on Macs is 72 dots per inch, which means the resulting picture will also be 72 dots per inch. This cuts down on file size, but it also limits the uses of the file to being presented on screen. If you print the file or wish for finer detail of the text by having higher resolution, you can't do this with a direct screenshot. In addition, screenshots are limited to what you see on screen, so if you have a well-formatted document that goes beyond the limits of the screen, then you cannot capture it in an image file using screenshots.

Nevertheless, screenshots have their uses and can be particularly useful for illustrating aspects of what you see on screen. For more details on screenshots see this article on screenshot options.

Using a PDF intermediary

The next option is a more versatile option for creating a rasterized image of a text document, which is to convert it initially to a PDF and then to one of many image types. In OS X (or in any supported OS that has Adobe PDF installed) this can be done with practically any printable document by printing the file and then using the 'PDF' menu in the print dialogue box to either save the PDF or view it directly in Preview.

With the document now open in Preview, you can select 'Save As' from the File menu and in the Format window choose one of a number of supported rasterized image formats, including GIF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF. Some image formats will have adjustable quality settings, but all should have a resolution option. The default will be 150dpi, but you can increase this to whatever suits your needs. Most printing will not need more than 300dpi, but you can set it to whatever you want.

Keep in mind that the greater the DPI setting the larger the final image will be, especially for nonlossy formats such as BMP and uncompressed TIFF. As an example, saving an 8x11 blank white text document as an uncompressed tiff file at 1500dpi results in a 631.2MB image file. Saving the same document as a JPEG with default quality settings results in a 3.3MB image file.

Once the file is saved you can annotate, crop, and otherwise manage it in ways that would be more difficult if the file were kept as a standard text or word processing file. Free Meet calls can only have a single host and up to 100 participants, compared to the 250-caller limit for G Suite users and the 25-participant limit for Hangouts.Unlike business calls with Meet, consumer calls are not recorded and stored and the company states that consumer data from Meet will not be used for advertisement targeting.While call data is reportedly not being used for advertising purposes, based on an analysis of Meet’s privacy policy, Google reserves the right to collect data on call duration, who is participating, and participants’ IP addresses.

Google Meet

If you're one of the billion-plus people who use Google's Gmail, you can find your tools for setting up a Google Meeting within the desktop app. It's on the left side, underneath your inbox. Click "New Meeting," to get started, send the invite link out to others and you're now meeting.

In the wake of the move to work and learn from home, Google Meet has gone from a  bare-bones app to one that's slightly more full-featured. It now has tools like screen share, whiteboarding, the ability to add in silly backgrounds and see video in higher 720p resolution. There are no time limits on meetings, but unlike Zoom, you can't record them on Google Meet.  

Pro tip: if you'd like to have the relatives join you at the table from the TV, you may want to pick up a Google Chromecast streaming device ($29 to $49). With that, you can beam the Google Meet from your computer, phone, or tablet to the TV.

Skype

This is the app that popularized video chat, especially for free communication (Skype-to-Skype calls) with loved ones overseas, and it still offers all that.

Skype's problem has always been that it was buggy. You could only initiate a chat with someone if they connected with you first and became a member of your contacts. And both parties had to download the hefty Skype app.

Now, you can go to http://www.skype.com, click the "Meet Now," tab, send the invite to your friends or family, and get talking, even without them signing in, becoming Skype friends, or downloading the app.

"If you don’t have Skype installed, that's OK, you can enjoy it on your browser," says Microsoft on the Skype site. "Invite up to 50 people and enjoy free video calls using Skype."

Microsoft Teams

Teams is not just a video conference program but an element of a huge Microsoft business messaging app aimed at enterprise. Anyone with a Microsoft account can use Teams and have as many as 50 people on a video meeting. You can also invite friends and have them join for free, whether or not they have a Microsoft account.

Setting up video meets with people within your organization is relatively simple. Just find the person (or persons by adding them to the conversation) and click the video call button.

Messenger Meeting Rooms

How is Facebook's Messenger Rooms different from Zoom? Consider this: Zoom doesn't have tools to let you broadcast meetings live to the world. Facebook does.

Facebook would like this meeting room to be considered a "Zoom Killer." But the reality is, it's still Facebook, where the first choice after you've selected your meeting room, is to put the video on your timeline for everyone to see and join.

But it doesn't have to be public. If you use Rooms and don't want to broadcast, select the private tab.

Rooms lets you meet with multiple people, play games and share your screen. Aside from that, you can have multiple people meeting, Or, if you want to use a mobile device, opt for the Messenger app there, where you can start a group call.

Apple FaceTime

FaceTime doesn't have to just be on an iPhone. Apple's popular chat program can be also be accessed on a Mac laptop with webcam, or iPad. But you are limited to family and friends with Apple devices. Sorry, Android fans.

Apple will let you invite up to 32 people on the call. To do a group call, open FaceTime, tap the add button, enter the names of your contacts and click Video. There is no time limit on FaceTime calls.

Remember that when you're doing the video meeting, if you look down at the screen to meet the eyes of your relatives, you'll actually be looking at pixels, not at them. You need to look into the camera to make eye contact with your family.

It’s pretty cool to think that you can virtually travel to the other side of the world without leaving home, and I’ve loved getting to learn about my student’s cultures. 

While I’ve primarily worked for Chinese online ESL companies, there are also plenty of exciting online English teaching jobs for Korean students!

Here are 5 companies where you can teach English online to Korean students from the comfort of home.

1. Nil English

Nil English is a smaller online platform offering lessons to adults and children from Korea. Because Nil English serves clients of all ages, there is a wide range of hours available.

Students on Nil English will see you for several weeks at a time so you have some consistency in your schedule. Classes are held on Zoom, Skype, or over a phone call, depending on what the student prefers.

While specific lesson plans aren’t provided, you will receive curriculum and guidelines from Nil English as to what your student is learning about.  

Teacher Requirements

To teach with Nil English, you must be a native English speaker from the USA. A Bachelor’s Degree or Associates Degree is required, a TEFL certification is preferred, but not required.

When you apply, make sure to include any teaching experiences or relevant qualifications on your resume to give yourself the best chance of getting accepted. 

Payment Information

Teachers on Nil English make around $7 – $10 per hour at first. Teachers are paid  $1.50 per 10-minute class and there are opportunities for raises every few months if you stick with the platform. 

Hours

Classes can be anywhere from 10 mins to an hour, with classes starting early in the morning and ending at midnight Korea time.

If you’re approved, they will send over your paperwork and you’ll complete your profile. Then, they will assign you students to help you get started.

2. Tutoring Go

Tutoring (which is also referred to as TutoringGo in some places), is an audio conversation platform for teaching English to Korean adults and children.

Classes are one-on-one and the platform is available 24/7, making this great for teachers who just want to hop on and teach when it suits their schedule.

Students can choose if they want a freestyle conversation a lesson from provided discussion topics and curriculum. Either way, there is minimal outside prep work for teachers. 

Teacher Requirements

Tutoring offers two different programs for teachers: Global and Native.

The Global tutoring program is open to teachers from the Philipines and the Native tutoring program is open to teachers from the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. 

For both the Global and the Native teaching position, you must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, have some experience teaching (online or in-classroom), and have a TEFL certificate.

This is one of the only companies I’m aware of that you can teach English online to Korean students as a citizen of the Philippines.

For technology, teachers will need to teach from a wired connection with 10mbps or above. WiFi is not permitted for teaching.

Payment Information

Teachers are paid $10 per class and will receive a bonus if they teach during peak hours. Peak time is from 6:00 am Korean time to 10:00 am Korean time. Teachers are paid through PayPal two times per month. 

Hours

Tutoring Go is open 24 hours and classes are 20 minutes long. There are no minimum or maximum teaching hours and you can work whenever you want. 

The highest demand for classes is during “peak time” which is from 6:00 am – 10:00 am Korean Time.

To get hired by Tutoring, you’ll start by submitting your documents and written application. You’ll also submit an audio and video recording for evaluation.

If you pass, you’ll be invited to a phone interview and mock class. Finally, you’ll receive initial teacher training and ongoing support in your classroom.

3. EnglishHunt

EnglishHunt has been offering online language lessons to students in Korea since the early 2000s. Overall, EnglishHunt has good reviews around the web. With an easy-going vibe, EnglishHunt is known for being a great way to teach Korean adults online.

Current teachers like the responsive staff and easygoing atmosphere but as with all platforms geared toward Asia, the hours are early. Lesson plans and materials are provided. 

Teacher Requirements

EnglishHunt is hiring American citizens and you’ll need an American bank account to receive payment.

To teach with EnglishHunt, you must have a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject or four years of teaching experience. Teachers should also have a TEFL certification. 

Unlike many popular platforms, the EnglishHunt teacher software only works with the windows operating system. According to their website, you will not be able to teach from an Apple or Mac computer, or from a tablet or Chromebook. 

Teachers should also have an ethernet connection and a headset with a microphone. 

Payment Information

EnglishHunt pays $14 USD per hour. Teachers are paid via direct deposit into their American bank account. 

Hours

The highest demand for classes on EnglishHunt is from 1:00 am EST to 3:00 am EST. This corresponds with the afternoons in Korea. 

The website doesn’t specify a certain number of hours teachers must open, but it seems like they might only hire seasonally to correspond with their semesters.

They open a semester of classes starting in August and a semester of classes starting in March.

4. CafeTalk

CafeTalk is an online learning platform with a large student base in Korea, Japan, and China. They have students all around the world too, but you’ll likely be working with students from Korea at some point since that’s a large percentage of students. 

CafeTalk is unlike the other platforms on this list because you can teach more than just languages. On CafeTalk, you can actually teach any subject you’re knowledgable about, such as yoga, math, and cooking classes in addition to language lessons. 

Teacher Requirements

Because CafeTalk lessons can cover a variety of subjects, there isn’t one set of requirements that must be met by all teachers. You should be an expert in the area you wish to teach and fluent in the language you wish to teach. 

Also, teachers must hold classes using Skype on a tablet, laptop, or desktop. Classes cannot be taught from phones. 

Payment Information 

Tutors on CafeTalk can set their own pay rates. When you’re first starting out, CafeTalk keeps 40% of the fee for each class. As you teach more on the platform, that percentage will drop down as low as 20%.

Hours

Because CafeTalk has students around the world, the platform is open 24/7. There are no minimum or maximum teaching hours and you can choose how long and when your classes are.

5. ZikTalk

If you want to become a causal online English tutor for Korean students, ZikTalk is the way to go! Part language platform, part social media hang out, ZikZalk is a community language exchange app that allows tutors to have conversations with language learners around the world.

With ZikTalk, teachers are paid by the minute to chat with Korean students through their phones. Lessons can be through video calls or audio-only phone calls. 

Teacher Requirements

ZikTalk is a pretty casual platform so there aren’t a lot of teacher requirements.

To be a Community Tutor, there are no degrees or requirements other than the ability to speak the language you want to teach. 

To become a Professional Tutor, you must have one year of teaching experience and certification of some kind. The exact certifications aren’t specified but usually, this means either a degree or a TEFL certification. 

You will also need to have a reliable internet connection and the ability to download the ZikTalk app. 

Payment Information

If you are a Community Tutor, you will make $3 per hour. If you are a Professional Tutor, you can set your own pay rate from $3-$30 per hour. 

Tutors are paid by the minute. The platform keeps 20% of whatever you earn from the lessons. 

Hours

ZikTalk is a free chat platform. This means that when you are online a student can call in and you’ll be paid by the minute for the duration of the call.

Even though you can be online whenever you want, remember that most of your students will be in Korea and will call at times that work with their schedules. 

There are no minimum or maximum teaching hours. When you apply, you’ll tell ZikTalk what your preferred teaching schedule is. When you’re approved, your account will automatically become available during the schedule you set (meaning you can receive calls).

You can go in and manually close or open availability any time, so this isn’t set in stone. 

How To Sign Up

To sign up, download the ZikTalk App and make an account. Then you can apply to be a tutor directly in their phone app. 

You will be taken to a screen where you set your hourly rate. You will be paid by the minute using this hourly rate as the baseline. Keep in mind that ZikTalk keeps 20% so account for that when you set your price. 

On the next screen, you’ll set your working hours. For your working hours, you will automatically show up as online and available to receive calls during this window.

You can manually disable this on a day to day basis if needed, but it will default to the on position. You can choose whichever hours and days of the week you want.

Next, you will complete your teacher profile. You will tell ZikTalk your fluency level in a variety of languages. You’ll be able to add interest tags and upload a profile picture. You’ll need to record a teacher introductory video and you can do that directly in the ZikTalk app. 

Once your teacher profile is complete, you’ll update documents to verify your identity — like your passport, degree, and any certifications. 

You’ll hit submit and then the ZikTak team will review everything you sent in. Once you’re approved, you’ll receive a message directly in the app letting you know you’re ready to start teaching.

Other Platforms

Of course, you could always sign up with Cambly or PrePly where you can teach students from around the globe, including Koreans. While these 2 platforms aren’t strictly for Korean students only, they are easy to use and are highly recommended.

Tips For Teaching English Online To Korean Students

As you prepare for your first online English lessons for Korean students, remember the following tips. 

Props And Visuals 

If you’re working with children, it can be helpful to have props like toys, a dry erase board, and flashcards to supplement the class.

Even though lessons are often provided, a little interactive toy can take a lesson from dry to fun in no time. I have a few beany baby toys and a set of small finger puppets on hand all the time. 

If you’re working with adults, having photos and magazines around can help strike up a conversation and enhance a topic of discussion. 

Classroom Environment

A professional classroom environment is critical for any online English teacher. Make your classroom stand out by using good lighting and working from a quiet space.

Using a headset with a microphone attachment can help prevent distracting background noises and make it easier for your students to hear you. Having the proper teaching equipment can ensure students want to hire you for another class. 

Go With The Flow

As a TEFL teacher, being able to adapt your lesson is a must! Sometimes students move through lessons faster than anticipated and sometimes you hardly get through a topic before the time is up.

To account for potential early finishers, I try to have a dry erase board around where we can quickly play some English games if needed. 

Whatever happens, go with the flow and encourage your student to speak as much as possible. 

A Note About Korean English Teaching Companies

If you’re used to teaching ESL for Chinese companies, you might notice that some of the Korean online teaching companies work a bit differently.

Many of the platforms I discussed in this post don’t have designated websites for aspiring tutors. You won’t find dozens of YouTube videos from existing teachers walking you through everything, and it can be hard to find specific details about jobs before applying.

To apply, you’ll often just need to send an email with your resume. 

When you get in touch with your Korean online teaching company via email, make sure to ask them plenty of questions about your pay rate, hours, and responsibilities before committing.

Requirements and teacher packages can change at any time, so do your due diligence before accepting a position to make sure you know what to expect.

Finally, the positions might be available one day, but will be listed as “full” the next. Make sure to continuously check back to see if the teaching position has opened up.

At the end of the day, most students enroll in online classes to practice communication in another language. Being yourself and having fun in your classes will make it easier to connect with your student and give them the best experience possible.

The Elgato Cam Link 4k allows you to to use a wide array of cameras from variety of companies to record 4k video directly to you PC, MAC or Laptop through a USB 3.0 port, or higher. In addition, the Cam Link 4k can also be used for video calling with applications such as Skype, Zoom, Discord, VSee and more. If you’re a streamers you can greatly increase the quality of your streams by replacing your old webcam with a Cam Link 4k as it works with both OBS and Xsplit. For years now, I’ve been searching for the perfect solution to streaming from events such as CES and Pax East. The Cam Link 4k could be the solution I’ve been searching for for streaming on the go.   A Closer Look

  The Cam Link 4k comes packed with the Cam Link and a USB 3.0 extension. The Cam Link 4k is a bit larger than a USB thumb drive measuring 3.18″ x .47″ x 1.22″. On one end is a USB type-a connector. On the opposite end is a single HDMI port. The Cam Link 4k supports 4k at up to 30 frames per second or 1080p at up to 60 frames per second. The Cam link also supports 1280 x 720 at 60 frames per second, 720 x 576 at 50 frames per second and 720 x 480 at 60 frames per second.

  On the top side of the Elgato Cam Link 4k, you see the Elgato logo, as well as the Cam Link 4k branding. Next to the Cam Link branding is what looks like a white line. This is actually an LED that lights up when the Cam Link is plugged in. On the underside of the Cam Link, you’ll find the the product information such as model and serial numbers as well as the address the Elgato’s parent company, Corsair.

Being wider than your average USB device, the Cam Link 4k comes packed with a USB 3.0 extension. This way, if you’re low on space in your I/O, you just need to plug in the extension. The USB 3.0 extension measures 12″ or one foot in length.

The Cam Link 4k has a laundry list of cameras from companies such as Sony, Canon, Nikon and Go Pro, just to name a few. There are a few different factors that Elgato considers before they verify a camera for use with the Cam Link 4k. These factors are if the camera has an HDMI port and can out put a clean HDMI, if it offers unlimited run time and if it has an external power option. If a camera meets these specific criteria, Elgato will verify the camera for use with the Cam Link 4k.

Elgato recommends using the Cam Link with a camera that offers a clean HDMI input as this will remove any and all overlays such as recording time, remaining storage space, focus point and anything else that you see on the screen when using your camera. In addition, its best to use a camera that has an external power option such as a dummy battery. this way, you won’t have to worry about swapping out batteries if you plan to film or stream for an extended period of time.

Its important to use a camera with an unlimited run time feature when connecting to the Cam Link 4k. Many cameras will shut down after a certain amount of time to save on battery power. Others have time limits on how long they can record due to internal timers or other factors. For example, I used to use the Sony A6300 for streaming. Although Elgato has fully verified the A6300, at launch, it had an over heating issue when recording for extended periods of time. This was originally chalked up to the battery overheating. However, even with the use of a dummy battery, I couldn’t get more than 45 minutes filming or streaming with the A6300. I have since switched to the Sony A7III and couldn’t be happier. My best advice is just get to know the camera you intend to use with the Cam Link 4k. Now, lets get into the software and different uses for the Cam Link 4k.

  Software and Setup

The Cam Link 4k supports Elgato’s 4k Capture Utility for Windows which can be downloaded from the Elgato website here: https://www.elgato.com/en/gaming/downloads. The 4k Utility allows you to record directly to any hard drive or SSD on you PC, even an external drive. The 4k Capture Utility from Elgato is rather straight forward and simple to use. On the top left-hand corner of the screen there are two tabs. These tabs are the Capture screen and the Library. The capture screen is essentially what your camera sees. Or whatever HDMI device is plugged into the Cam Link that will work. During testing, I was able to capture a screen from another computer. Where the Cam Link is designed for use with cameras, I wasn’t sure if it would work. However, it did. It also captured the audio.

The next section in the Elgato 4k Capture Utility is the Library. Here, you can store and manage all of your captures be it games or videos you record. The Library has Four main folders; All, Games, Tags and Smart Folder. The Smart Folder separates your videos according to length and quality. There are four categories in the smart folder. These are 4k Videos, Long 4k Videos, Short Videos and Small Videos. You can also add in your own folders.

Other than the Capture section and Library section, there is the preferences menu. This is broken down into five sections. These sections are General, Devices, Picture, Recording and Mic. In the General section, you can enable the Stream Link beta as well as select the format for Stream Link. The Elgato Stream Link software allows you to capture your IOS device to your desktop. Its a cool feature and it works rather well. I have used it in the past. Stream Link also allows you to use your iPhone as a webcam. In the general section, you can also update your software.

In the device section, you can swap between other installed Elgato Capture devices such as the Elgato HD60, The HD60 Pro or the 4K60 Pro just to name a few. Now, you can install multiple Elgato capture devices on one system. However, the 4k Capture Utility can one capture one device at a time. What you can do is Capture your camera using the Cam Link 4k in an application such as Xsplit or Discord. Then, using another Elgato capture device suck as the 4K60 Pro, use the 4K Capture Utility to capture another PC. This is very useful for streaming. 

The next section in the preferences menu is the Picture section. Here you can adjust the brightness, contrast, saturation and hue of the picture the Elgato 4k utility is capturing.

The recording section allows you to chose where both your recordings and screen shots will; be saved. You can also select the video encoder. You can select between your install graphics card, or the encoder built into the software. For the format, the Cam Link 4K can capture in four resolutions but has eight options over all. These options are 720p30, 720p60, 1080p30, 1080p60, 1440p30, 1440p60, 2160p30 and 2160p60. The bit rate is determined by the format. The output tells you the format, bit rate and how much storage will be used with your current settings. For example, at 2160p30 and a bit rate of 35.9 Mbps will use 15.8 GB of storage per hour. You can also chose to reduce the preview frame rate during recording and enable flashback recording. The Flashback recording will start recording when the 4k Capture Utility launches. You can also set the flashback recording time for up to two hours.

The Mic section is the final section in the preferences menu. Here you can select your mic to use with the 4k Capture Utility. You can also adjust the input gain and input level. The 4k Capture Utility also allows you to monitor the audio.

If you’re a streamer, The 4k Capture Utility can be used as source in Xsplit or OBS. As you can see from the two images below, the Cam Link 4k offers a far better image than your average webcam. One image is from the The Sony A7III, through the Cam Link 4k in Xsplit. The other image is from the Logitech software using the Logitech C920 Webcam. Given the quality of your camera will determine the quality of you capture. But any DSLR, camcorder or mirror-less camera paired with the Elgato Cam Link 4k will offer far superior quality than any webcam.

One this that is very important to keep in mind is there is an audio delay when using any capture card. Especially if you’re using something other than the audio on your camera, or even a shotgun mic attached to your camera. For streaming, I use the Sound Blaster K3+ with the Audio Technica AT2035. This caused a terrible audio delay in Xsplit when streaming or recording tot he 4k Capture Utility. There are two options to resolve this issue. When streaming, simply go into your streaming applications settings and set a 650 ms delay on both the speakers and mic. It won’t be perfect, but its as close as I could get and the settings that Elgato recommended to me. The second option is for recording and that is to use an application such as Adobe Audition or a free option like Audacity to record your audio separately and fix it in post. But, if you don’t care to play with software or intend to record videos, and just plan to use the Cam Link 4k for Skype, Discord or Zoom, you can simply plug it in and use it.

  Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Whether you’re streamers, working from home, or just want something better than the average webcam on you PC, the Elgato Cam Link 4k is an excellent option. The Cam Link 4k offers an amazing image quality, especially when compared to the most popular webcam used by content creators, the Logitech C920. Now there are better webcam options. However, a decent 4k webcam is going to run upwards of $200 USD. At the time of this review, the Cam Link 4k is selling on B&H or at Best Buy for $129.99. So, if you already have a camera that can output a clean HDMI, then the Cam Link 4k is by far the better option. When it comes to technology, its rare that he better option is also the cheaper option. Given, the Cam Link 4k does require a camera. But, if you’re a content creator getting into streaming, chances are you already have a decent camera already.

The Cam Link 4k makes recording in studio far easier by eliminating the need for SD cards, card readers and even transferring data after recording. Recording directly to my PC or Laptop is much more convenient than having to play around with SD card and card readers. With the Cam Link 4k, I can record directly to an NVMe SSD. Over time, this will save you hours of waiting for files to transfer and get you to editing sooner. As we all know, when it comes to content creation, time is money. So if you’re looking to up the quality of your streams, videos or even conference calls, the Cam Link 4k is the way to go.

The 2020 Guide to Creating Quality Technical Screencasts, Presentations, and Remote Meetings

I've had a lot of people ask me to write up a guide to creating great technical screencasts. This is an update to my 2011 post on the same topic.

What are you doing? STOP and reassert your assumptions

Hang on. You're doing a screencast or sharing your screen in some way for a meeting, presentation, or YouTube. What does that mean and why did I suggest you stop.

This isn't a stage presentation or even a talk in a conference room. Screencasts and remote meetings have an intimacy to them. You're in someone's ear, in their headphones, you're 18 inches from their face. Consider how you want to be seen, how you want to be heard, and what is on your screen.

Try to apply a level of intentionality and deliberate practice. I'm not saying to micromanage, but I am saying don't just "share your screen." Put your empathy hat on and consider your audience and how it'll look and feel for them.

Initial setup and tools

You can use any number of tools for screen capture. They are largely the same. My preferred tool is Camtasia. Other valid tools are CamStudio (a free and open source tool) and Expression Encoder Screen Capture. You can also use OBS to record your screen and webcam.

When you're using Skype/Zoom/Teams to record live, you're already set as those tools will share for you as well as record.

Windows Look at Feel

At the risk of sounding uptight, how you setup Windows and your environment is the difference between a professional and an amateurish screencast. It's shocking how many folks will start recording a screencast without changing a thing, then wonder why their 1600x1200 screencast looks bad on YouTube at 360p or low bandwidth on a phone. If you find yourself doing screencasts a lot, considering making a custom user (maybe named Screencast?) on your machine with these settings already applied. That way you can login as Screencast and your settings will stick.

Resolution and Aspect

First, decide on your aspect ratio. Your laptop may have a ratio of width to height that is 3:2 or 4:3 but MOST people have a 16:9 Widescreen system? A VERY safe resolution in 2020 is 1280x720 (also known as 720p). That means that you'll be visible on everything from a low-end Android, any tablet, up to a desktop.

That said, statistics show that many folks now have 1920x1080 (1080p) capable systems. But again, consider your audience. If I was presenting to a rural school district, I'd use 720 or a lower resolution. It will be smoother and use less bandwidth and you'll never have issue with things being too small. If I was presenting in a professional environment I'd use 1080p. I don't present at 4k, especially if the audience is overseas from where I am. You're pushing millions of pixels that aren't needed, slowing your message and adding no additional value.

On Windows, consider your scale factor. At 1080p, 125% DPI is reasonable. At 720p (or 1366x768, using 100% scaling is reasonable).

Background Wallpaper and Icons

Choose a standard looking background photo. I prefer to use one from http://unsplash.com or the defaults that come with Windows 10 or your Mac. Avoid complex backgrounds as they don't compress well during encoding. Avoid using pictures of your kids or family unless it feeds your spirit and you don't mind mixing the professional and personal. Again - be intentional. I am neither for nor against - just be conscious and decide. Don't just accept the defaults.

Hide your desktop icons. Right click your desktop and hit View | Show Desktop Items. Also consider whether we need to see your desktop at all. If it doesn’t add value, don’t show it on the screencast.

Fonts

Try to use standard fonts and themes. While your preferred font and colors/themes offer personality, they can be distracting. Consider the message you want to present.

If you're using Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code, remember that your audience likely hasn't changed their defaults, and if you show them something fancy, they'll be thinking about how they get that fancy widget rather than your content. In Visual Studio proper, go to Tools | Options | Environment | Fonts and Colors and click "Use Defaults."

In all your text editors, consider change your fonts to Consolas Size 15. It may seem counter-intuitive to have such large fonts but in fact this will make your code viewable even on an iPhone or Tablet. 

Remember, most video sites, including YouTube, restrict the embedded video player size to a maximum of around 560p height, unless you go full-screen or use a pop-out. Use the font size recommended here, and use Camtasia’s zoom and highlight features during editing to call out key bits of code.

Don’t highlight code in the editor by selecting it with the mouse UNLESS you've deliberately change the selection background color. Defaults are typically hard to read editor selections in video. Instead, zoom and highlight in post production, or use ZoomIt and practice zooming and emphasizing on screen elements.

Browser Setup

Unless your screencast is about using different browsers, pick a browser and stick to it. Hide your toolbars, clear your cache, history, and your autocomplete history. You'd be surprised how many inappropriate sites and autocomplete suggestions are published on the web forever and not noticed until it's too late. Don't view pr0n on your screencast machine. Be aware.

Toolbars

Your browser shouldn't show any, and this is a good time to uninstall or hide whatever coupon-offering nonsense or McAffee pixel waster that you've stopped being able to see after all these years. Remember, default is the word of the day. Disable any Browser Extensions that aren't adding value.

If you are using Visual Studio or an IDE (Eclipse, Photoshop, etc) be aware of your toolbars. If you have made extensive customizations to your toolbars and you use them in the screencast, you are doing a great disservice to your audience. Put things to the default. If you use hotkeys, tell the audience, and use them for a reason.

Toast

You've got mail! Yay. Yes, but not during your screencast. Turn off Outlook Gmail, GChat, Twitter, Messenger, Skype, and anything else that can "pop toast" during your screencast.

Clock and Notifications

Go to Start on Windows 10, and search for System Icons and turn off the Clock temporarily. Why? You can't easily edit a screencast if there's a convenient time code in the corner that jumps around during your edits. Also, no one needs to know you're doing your work at 3am.

Clean out your taskbar and notification area. Anything that visually distracts, or just hide the taskbar.

Audio and Voice

Use a decent microphone. I use a Samson C01U. You can also use a USB headset-style microphone but be aware that breathing and "cotton mouth" really shows up on these. Test it! Listen to yourself! Try moving the microphone above your nose so you aren't exhaling onto it directly. Use a pop filter to help eliminate 'plosives (p's and t's). You can get them cheap at a music store.

Be aware of your keyboard clicks. Some folks feel strongly about whether or not your keyboard can be heard during a screencast. Ultimately it's your choice, but you have to be aware of it first, then make a conscious decision. Don't just let whatever happens happen. Think about your keyboard sound, your typing style and your microphone, and listen to it a few times and see if you like how it comes together.

Avoid prolonged silence. There should be ebb and flow of "I'm saying this, I'm doing that" but not 10 seconds of "watch my mouse." Speak in an upbeat but authentic tone. Be real.

Also be calm and quiet. Remember you are a foot from them and you're their ear. It's a conversation with a friend, not a presentation to thousands (even if it is).

Don’t apologize or make excuses for mistakes – either work them in as something to learn from, or remove them completely.

If you are editing the presentation - If you make a mistake when speaking or demonstrating, clap your hands or cough loudly into the mic and wait a second before starting that portion over. When editing, the mistakes will show up as loud audio spikes, making it easy to find them.

Camtasia has decent automatic noise reduction. Use it. You’ll be surprised how much background noise your room has that you, but not your audience, will easily tune out.

If you must overdub a portion of the audio, sit in the same position you did while recording the original, and have the mic in the same spot. You want your voice to blend in seamlessly.

Preferred Video Output for Prerecords

Your screen capture tool should be produced at the highest reasonable quality as it will be compressed later when it's uploaded. Think of it like producing JPEGs. You can make a 5 megabyte JPG, but often a 500k one will do. You can make a 10 gig screen capture if you use uncompressed AVI encoding, but often a high bit rate MP4 will do.

The trick is to remember that your compressed screencast will be recompressed (copies of copies) when it is run through the encoding process.

Edit your screencast, if you do, in its recorded native resolution which hopefully is what you'll publish to as well. That means, record at 1080p, edit at 1080p, and publish at 1080p. Let YouTube or your final destination do the squishing to smaller resolutions.

Personally, I like to know what's going on in my production process so I always select things like "Custom production settings" in Camtasia rather than presets. Ultimately you'll need to try and find what works for you. Use an H.264 encoder with a high bitrate for the video and 44.1kHz/441000Hz 16 bit mono for the audio. Basically make a decently sized MP4 and it should work everywhere.

Do you have enough bandwidth?

In my opinion, if you are doing a live call with Video and Screensharing and you want it to be high definition, you'll need 4 Mbps upstream from your connection. You can check this at http://speedtest.net. If you have 5-6 Mbps you've got a little more headroom. However, if someone in the house decides to get on Netflix, you could have an issue. Know your bandwidth limitations ahead of time. If it's an important stream, can you dedicate your bandwidth to just your one machine? Check out QoS (quality of service) on your router, or better yet, take your kids' iPads away! ;)

Conclusion

Take some time. I put about an hour of work into a 15 min screencast. Your mileage may vary. Watch your video! Listen to it, and have your friends listen to it. Does it look smooth? Sound smooth? Is it viewable on a small device AND a big screen? Does it FEEL good?
