Lawn grass is a scourge on the environment anyway. By keeping it mowed not only are you constantly torturing an entire family of monocots, the monoculture also ruins the soil, and the constant watering leaches it of much-needed nutrition for anything else to even attempt to grow.
Not only that, most lawn grasses are invasive species in most areas they are introduced to, and once they escape your strict sadistic controlled lawn environment, they will choke out and drain other more healthy and complex ecosystems of valuable nutrients and soil-space for roots.
The natural world is more interconnected than you can possibly imagine and learning about it just gives you an endless cascade of realizations about symbiotic relationships that permeate every level of the ecosystem
I've been learning about fallen leaves. Many of you may know that fallen leaves are used by many moth and butterfly species to hibernate through the winter. This, my friends, is only the very beginning of the leaf layer's importance.
The layer of fallen leaves that covers the ground in winter has the following functions (and more):
Keeping the soil temperature more consistent
Insulating the earliest spring flowers to stop them from freezing
Protecting plants late in the year from being killed by early frosts
Sheltering 94% of moth species during their winter hibernation as well as many butterflies and other insects
Fertilizing and enriching the soil. The nutrients in fallen leaves are the main source of soil nutrients in habitats worldwide. Streams and rivers in forests carry the nutrients of leaves far and wide.
Providing habitat for predators like salamanders and spiders.
Suppressing weed growth.
Improving the germination of tree seeds (e.g. acorns)
Attracting beneficial microbes
Increasing the water holding capacity of the soil
Providing a food source for birds to feed their babies on in the spring (insects)
What's more, the fallen leaves of every species of tree have different properties that affect their effects on the ecosystem, including: size, shape, toughness, and speed of decomposition. The leaves of broadleaf deciduous trees are optimized to support and fertilize the deciduous forest environment.
#plants#plantcraft#ecosystems#trees#← previous tags#no but seriously#even worse are those rolls of uprooted grass-based carpeting that many landscapers use to fill out shallow troughs lined with concrete#like those will die out no matter how much you water them#and you're judt wasting water that could be better used for literally anything else by pretending you're keeping the lawn green#grow tulsi and basil and herbs and shrubs instead of grass#your lawn will smell nicer and supplement your kitchen too

I'm yours
Ishan is a hopeless romantic. In the sense that his romantic interests never let him hope.
The most recent person that he has been head over heels for is going to give a seminar in their college and he's Ishan's favourite.
Ishan is the head of the Cultural and Intellectual Committee and as such, he's in charge of almost all the extracurricular events that take place in the college. He's always had such bloody issues with 90% of the guests and speakers for being unprepared or late that these days he just assumes that the guests will be late, but hopefully not too late.
Which, brings him back to his current romantic interest— Shubhman Gill.
The man has been guest speaker in their college twice by now, third time monday, and he has never disappointed Ishan. He's always on time, he's always perfectly dressed, and he always emails Ishan his speech and let's Ishan point out details that he would humbly request to add or remove. Ishan could have kissed him for being a half decent human being the very first time he did that.
Plus, the college being the Techno faculty, the super famous technological prodigy of India coming as a guest speaker, Shubhman sometimes gets assaulted with too many questions and people and sometimes with no good interactive audience at all and yet, he smiles and talks to the teachers afterwards.
The first time Shubhman talked to him, Ishan had been putting away the gifts Shubhman received so that the man could take them on his bike without damaging the Tulsi plant.
(And that was another thing. A famous and important personality coming on his fucking bike? Ishan drooled a little bit when he heard Shubhman softly ask Ritika ma'am for a place to keep his helmet at.)
"Thank you for inviting me," Shubhman told him in a bashful way, an embarrassed blush on his cheeks.
Inexplicably, Ishan wanted to bite those cheeks. He held himself in chem and smiled back,"Thank you for coming, Mr. Gill. You've been a pleasure to work with."
"Please, it's Shubhman! And honestly, I had fun coming here as well. I hear you're the organiser of the event; it's amazingly done, I must say. Your management is impeccable."
So what if Ishan let the praise get to his head? So what if he stalked Shubhman on Instagram later? They had exchanged numbers—for future seminars, Shubhman had explained, much to Ishan's misfortune— and Ishan was entitled to be a little over his head for once!
The second time they talked, was when Ishan congratulated Shubhman on his award as the leading influencer of social media. The third time was when Shubhman wished Ishan on his birthday. The fourth was when Ishan had to invite Shubhman for ALASKA organisation's collab with their college and his presence as a guest judge.
Shubhman had sought him out again.
"I had a lot of fun," he said with that damnable smile of his,"thank you for inviting me again, Ishan."
Ishan shook his head,"Thank you for coming, man. Honestly, your way of interaction makes learning more interesting for the students. And, well, throws me some points to become the favourite teacher of the year."
Shubhman laughed, a sound that Ishan wanted to get drunk on for the rest of his goddamn life. "You have those competitions?"
Ishan looked around dramatically and leaned towards Shubhman, as of telling a secret. Shubhman, that perfect man, leaned forward as well, looking completely serious about this so called secret.
Ishan reached on his tip toes to whisper,"The students do that in their classes on Teachers' day. If they do it publically, they have to give the best teacher paper crown to teachers senior than me. So, a private award for me to take."
Somewhere in the background, something huge fell and Ishan startled badly enough to almost stumble but Shubhman caught him by the arm and grinned,"Cheers to the best teacher, then. What's the other activities you planned amazingly?"
And that's how Shubhman had ended up getting VIP passes to see the Darshan Raval concert that had been arranged.
Virat bhaiya had raised an eyebrow at Ishan showing Shubhman around the campus while they prepared for the concert lightings and all, but hadn't said anything. Ishan was so thankful.
They haven't talked in the four months after Ishan wished Shubhman a happy birthday.
____________________________________________________
So, in short, Ishan is a hopeless romantic. He turns every little gesture into a gesture of love and he has many one sided love stories that live rent free in his head.
He would have romantisized this as well, to be honest, if he wasn't confused as fuck.
He's been home for all of five minutes after a damn long day— it's exam season— and all he wants to do is flop on his bed and sleep for the next four weeks. A text pops up on his phone, from an unknown number.
'Are you tired, love? Anything I can do to help?'
Ishan frowns. None of his friends changed their numbers recently and moreover, none of them use nicknames. Can't be a student, no student of his would dare disrespect him. He may be lenient most of the time, but he's tempered enough to break their audacity on the very first lecture.
'Who is this?'
The reply came instantly. 'Your admirer? Your worshipper? Your fan?' a second passed as Ishan gawked at the message. Another message dropped. 'Whatever I am, I'm yours.'
Well, damn. Someone's smooth.
'Thank you for your kind words, but I prefer not to own people. It's illegal yk?' Ishan feels like an idiot as soon as he sends the text but he can't do anything because it's seen immediately. The person on the other side must be bloody stuck to their chat.
They send a few laughing emojis. 'I could turn the world around for you to be mine, though.'
Goddamn.
Ishan leaves the message on seen as he types the unknown number on Truecaller, but there's no registered name under the number.
He's about to leave and go freshen up when another message pops up.
'Searching for me on Truecaller will result to nothing, love.'
Ishan leaves the message on delivered as he looks around himself, his big house feeling emptier by the second. He blocks the number, somehow feeling a weird mix of anticipation and trepidation. He takes a fortifying breath and nods to himself, throwing his phone on the dinning table on his way to his bed room.
He tries to get the message out of his head as he looks for another YouTube video to see while eating his dinner.
'Do you know that blocking someone in the middle of the conversation is rude, Ishan?' the pop up message reads.
'Fuck off.'
____________________________________________________
There's a swarm of notifications going off and that's how Ishan wakes up at the ungodly hour of 2:34 am.
He blindly reaches for his phone, the brightness will kill him he's sure, but somehow manages to read the notifications with squinted eyes.
It's an annual Spotify subscription? What the fuck?
He scrambles to sit up and turns on the lamp, trying to focus more. The bloody notifications are an absolute onslaught to his ears. He even has an email announcing his annual Spotify premium account but there's no SMS of deduction from his account. What even—
Before he can start to plan a schedule to go to the bank tomorrow and also somehow plan a call to the customer service of Spotify, another message from that unknown number pops up.
'Happy belated Birthday, Ishan. Sorry I couldn't get you any actual gifts this time, I'll do better next time.'
Next bloody time?
'There won't be a bloody next time. Don't interfere in my life again. And cancel this bloody premium, i don't need it.'
And he lies.
He does need the premium for when he pulls all nighters and for when he drives to and fro to college. He needs it because he needs someone to talk and listen when he wants to be awake and podcasts are the only way that happens lately when he's off work.
Yes, he has a horrid social life— as a professor often does. All his friends are his colleagues. His family usually knows that he pulls insane hours and they only call at weekends.
'Don't reject it, pls' the message comes, as Ishan ponders his lonely life. When was the last time he enjoyed his life thoroughly? Another message pops up. 'Look, I just want to do something nice for you, okay? Leave it be, it's not your money thats costing you and I've got plenty of money to spend on my dear ones, with god's grace.'
Ishan doesn't know what to reply and he is incensed at himself for it. What the fuck? Ishan has never been greedy or wanted what he couldn't have. This random person suddenly gifts him a Spotify premium, Ishan contemplates his life and he hesitates in doing the right thing?
'Pls Ishan?'
Oh god, he can hear the puppy eyes. He turns off his internet and throws the phone on the bed. Somehow, Ishan manages to sleep.
____________________________________________________
The next morning, it's thankfully Saturday. His Saturdays go great almost always.
His hand itches to listen to his Spotify playlist he's made specifically for travel, but he doesn't want to use a stranger's gift. The stranger might know him and do it out of good of his heart or whatever, but Ishan, in all good conscience cannot use someone for their money.
As he absentmindedly drinks his evening tea, Ishan contemplates any tasks he has for the next day— grocery shopping, getting a haircut, finding a plumber to fix that minor leakage in his kitchen tap. It's gonna be a long day.
"Ishan!" He blinks up like a deer in highlights as he's startled by Rohit bhaiya. "What are you thinking?"
"Kuch nahi, bhaiya," he says and grins when Rohit bhaiya puts his hand on his shoulder. Ishan has always been a fan of skinship, and while Virat bhaiya being touchy is normal and comforting, Rohit bhaiya being touchy is rewarding and privileged. "Aap batao, how was your day?"
He groans in reply,"Puchh mat, Bhai. These B.Com students look innocent but they're so not! Apparently some kids sold around a paper of Accounts saying it's a leaked paper but it wasn't and making it clear to the students as well the board members? Hell. Why did I even accept to be the Secretary there when I'm Dean here too?"
Ishan laughs,"Because you love Virat bhaiya and lost a bet?"
"Shh, don't speak about it where students can hear you!"
Ishan laughs again. Feeling happy is a natural state of his when he's around his colleagues, they're all so good to him. It's what makes him stay in the college despite him getting offers from a lot of colleges in bigger cities. He's never gonna get the same affection anywhere else and he's ready to face some separation with his family while he works here. He's already made it clear that they're gonna come love with after his father finally retires.
"Accha, tell me what is the status of overmorrow's seminar?"
The one where his celebrity crush is going to be the main speaker?
"Spectacular. I've done everything, bas I'll get the flowers and the gift watch and everything else is set. Bhaiya bas Monday ko maachis dhundhni na pade, haa?"
It happens almost every damn time. It'd be ten minutes from arrival time of the guest and Ishan would tell some student to get the matchsticks for the auspicious diya lighting and no one would find the matchsticks. With everyone else, it's fine, but Shubhman? He's a punctual man, running around like headless chicken in front of him is not how he wants to establish himself and his students.
Rohit bhaiya nods understandingly. "Pakka. Varna ye apna hai na vo, usse lighter le ke candle light karke de Dena."
Ishan shakes his head at the confusing slang Rohit bhaiya uses. Amar, one of his students, has a smoking habit and hence carries around a lighter. The idiot always saves himself by offering his lighter at times when lighting something was necessary.
"Thik. Anyways, I'm going home, bhaiya. Anything left for me to do?"
Rohit bhaiya shakes his head with a grin and lets him go.
Its almost reflex when Ishan puts his earphones in and starts Chhaiya Chhaiya.
The bloody quality makes him blink and straighten up. And oh. Yeah, he's using premium.
Even as he feels a little guilty, his head bops to the beat as he drives back home.
____________________________________________________
When Ishan comes back home again, his garden looks different.
He's convinced that it's because he's not inspecting it properly so he crouches down and cranes his neck to look at the grass and some flower plants he has. He can't put his finger on it, but it's different.
He glances around the rest of his garden and that's when it catches his eye— the mower. And the pile of grass beside.
Someone fucking mowed his garden? And somehow, to the exact way he likes it.
And then, he hears the start of a two-wheeler, and before he's even out of the gate, the person has turned the corner and all Ishan can see is the shade of their taillight on the trees.
Ishan hightails it inside his house and checks it all over.
No lock broken, no thing stolen and no money moved. Everything is as it was when he left in the morning.
His phone pings with another message.
'Sorry to leave like that, ik it was obnoxious'
'how'd you like your garden tho? Did I do well?'
And. Ishan is a weak man, okay?
He knows this is wrong, he knows he has a stalker probably, and someone with probably deep issues, but. He bloody can't accept such big help without saying anything in gratitude, okay? He's weak.
'Its fine, tho I'd like to meet you someday' what the fuck is he saying. He wants to meet a probable sociopath?
'And thanks for the garden. You've done it perfectly and it's a great help. Thank you' there. He's been polite.
Another message comes. 'I think you'll enjoy our meeting a lot, love. And your welcome'
No other messages pop up throughout the evening.
Ishan denies to even himself that he checks his phone every five minutes for the stranger.
He's intrigued, he says to himself when he goes to sleep.

DAY 5605
Jalsa, Mumbai June 22, 2023 Thu 11:25 PM
🪔 .. June 23 .. birthday greetings to Ef Anish Morarji Tataria .. yo from your Ef Family 😁✌🏽 ..
And .. to dear Ef Moses Sapir .. your wedding anniversary on June 23 .. our good wishes always ..
Birthday - EF - Anish Morarji Tataria Friday, 23 June .. and our wishes for this special day of yours .. love from the Ef family ..
Does it dawn .. dawn in the recognised morn of the day .. the day doth announce its presence .. or about its presence .. and the World of writing and writers hurriedly adopts the ‘dawn’ to their world ..
‘ it be the dawn of a new world’ .. they say .. or words to that effect .. effective , poetic and composite .. whether the dawn turns to the sun lit day or not irrespective .. or sets into another quiet unknown night for another dawn to re appear ..
amusingly , when the film ‘DON’ was announced with me .. many in the world of Hindi cinema were quite unaware of the word don ..
what they were familiar with was a product known as DAWN .. the DAWN banyaan .. vests ..
And the market was very skeptical and annoyed with the makers as to why a film title should be about undergarments .. !!
many still are .. 🤣
... but on another note .. Ef remembers Babuji and his translated auto biography and puts it all down .. I feel it deserves mention here :
And .. before Music Day ends .. I feel having the honor of sharing few words from Babuji about his journey with music from his autobiography .. but , then , indeed , every day is music day .. love .. ❤️🙏🏻
Quoting babuji : 🙏🏻
“ [...] ..
Pratap Narayan [my Father] was duly betrothed to the daughter of Munshi Ishwari Prasad, a resident of Katra Mohalla in Allahabad. Her name was Sursati, and she was to become my Mother. The name 'Sursati' is clearly derived from 'Saraswati', and when I felt the first stirrings of a desire to be a poet or writer, I derived much self-confidence from the fact that I was the son of the goddess of learning and of art and music.
[And in mentioning music] ..
Professor Khushhalkar, was our music teacher, he was a Maharashtrian and a pupil of Pandit V.D. Pulaskar. His Hindi was of the Bombay variety, but when he taught us devotional songs, his pronunciation of every syllable was crystal-clear; he would make us do voice practice to the harmonium, then teach us bhajans such as Tulsi's Gaiye Ganapati Jagabandara, which I can still sing from memory today. He also showed us how to sing while picking out the notes on the harmonium: he would pump the bellows with one hand while the fingers of the other would run lightly over the keys, his own voice blending with that of the instrument in such a way as to achieve a sublime harmony of the inanimate with the animate: evoking a tingling emotional response. Professor Khushhalkar sowed the seeds of music in me, but regrettably I was never able to grow the plant that should have sprung from them. Still, my slight study of music was helpful in the reciting of poetry, and a little knowledge of tala helped me compose songs in the folk genre. I can also tap out a rhythm on a drum, but that was learnt from my mother and sisters. ” ~
Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan's Autobiography: In The Afternoon Of Time .. Chapter: Things to Forget, Things to Remember .. Pages: 56, 112 ..
.. and in time .. hopefully there shall an introduction to the music that this untrained novice who has had no musical training at all .. just been in the company of listening and present to the sounds of music that has remained with me .. and the legacy of Babuji , if nothing else shall prevail .. yet again ..
In quiet love and affection to the Ef ..
Amitabh Bachchan

Not exactly mainstream mythology, but the past few days I've been thinking about how many goddesses and some gods are associated with rivers, and how their parentages changed over the years.
There is a Wikipedia page for the Rivers in Hinduism, and while I haven't been able to cross-reference some of these (Wikipedia, due to the nature of contributions, has a vast number of references from books, travelogues and anecdotes written by individual authors instead of actual scripture or local sources), many others are easily verifiable and extremely interesting. I'd still advise taking this with a grain of salt, though, because some might not be extensively true.
The south gets a separate post, and this one is a list of the most prominent rivers of the north:
1, Ganga: As the major river in the plains, Ganga has quite a few myths attached to her. There is, of course, the story of how she was brought down to earth, with a detour through Patala, by Bhagiratha, and the Ramayana makes her Parvati's sister and Himavat's daughter by his wife Mainavati, daughter of Mount Meru. During the descent, she floods sage Jahnu's aashram so the sage drinks her up completely. Bhagiratha comes to entreat him, and Jahnu, realising his mistake, lets her out of his ear. This is Ganga's rebirth, and also why so many people call her Janhavi.
Another myth that is attested in the Devi Bhagwata Purana labels her as Vishnu's wife, along with Lakshmi and Saraswati. Once Saraswati accuses Ganga of trying to steal Vishnu's love. Vishnu refuses to intervene in this, but Lakshmi tries to soothe Saraswati, who becomes angrier and curses Lakshmi to be born on earth as a river (which Vishnu later alters so she is born as both the Padma(vati?) river, and the Tulsi plant). Ganga gets upset that Lakshmi got cursed defending her, and curses Saraswati to become a river, and adds on that men will wash away there sins in her waters. Saraswati gets even madder and curses Ganga to also become a river with the same conditions . Then Vishnu intervenes, and declaring he will keep only Lakshmi as his wife, and sends Saraswati to Brahma and Ganga to Shiva. Which is a hell of a thing to say when you have three wives in who were quarreling for your affection and you did not interfere. Predictably, the three of them band together and Vishnu in the end has to back down. A third part of Ganga goes to Shiva's hair, a third into Bharata, and the full part (no I don't get the math either) stays with him at Vaikuntha. Similarly, the other two remain his wives in Vaikuntha, while simultaneously being rivers and all the other things they're supposed to be.
The story of Ganga marrying Shantanu and drowning seven of their eight kids is pretty popular, but this myth has a bit of a prequel, in which everyone gets cursed. Ganga (called Janhavi in the Mahabharata, because she was reborn to the sage Jahnu) and this other Suryavamshi King are attending Brahma's court with the other gods. Suddenly, the wind blows off Ganga's clothes, and everyone averts their eyes, except the King. Brahma is furious at the disrespect and curses him to be reborn on earth as a man, and Ganga, who apparently didn't mind as much, decides to follow him. In some versions, she also gets cursed because she enjoys the act of being watched and Brahma went "get a room and the room is the earth". As she is leaving the meeting, she runs across the Vasus, who also just got cursed, and offers to help them. Nice :)
Also the Devi Bhagawata Purana makes Shantanu a part of Vishnu to retain Ganga as Vishnu's wife, which, given that both he and Krishna did their best to cause war, makes sense in a weird type of way.
The sacredness of river Ganga comes from the fact that she interacts with all the three supreme gods. The Bhagwata Purana says that when Vamana Vishnu stepped for the second time, his toenail pierced the fabric of the universe and let in the water from outside in the form of Ganga (yes, this is exactly what is written. I'm not exaggerating one bit, they even call her Vishnupadi for this). Then she passes past the Saptarshis, into Brahma's city, and afterwards Shiva picks her up and ties her in his hair so her force will not shatter the earth.
The Agni Purana depicts her as a fair-complexioned goddess with a pot and a flower, and names her vehicle the crocodile.
2. Yamuna: She is very often referred to as Kalindi in later texts, and is included among Krishna's eight principal wives, and also plays an important role in Krishna's childhood myths. By and large, her parents are accepted to be Surya and Sanjana/Saranyu, which makes her related to a bunch of Kunti's children in some really complicated ways.
[Side note: despite Indra being the King of Gods, Surya appears to have a much broader influence in the genealogy of heroes and most of his children end up being kings and queens.]
There are a few early texts that equate Yami with Yamuna, and by that metric, here is another story about her. In one version, attested in the Rig Veda, Yami wishes to marry her brother Yama and gets rejected. It sounds like a dialogue between a little sister and her big brother, because all Yami says is, "Let's get married, and we will be beautiful and happy forever!" and Yama keeps dissuading her by saying things like, "No, that is wrong, that is sinful. You're going to get a lovely husband, don't worry." And then Yami gets upset and calls him a bad brother. But there is no basis for this, I just got those vibes. This is very likely a moral and social rejection of brother-sister marriage. In her book, The Indian Theogony, Sukumari Bhattacharji speculates that Yama-Yami may have been married at some point, as a parallel to all the married brother-sister couples across mythologies who retain their opposite and comparative nature, and Yama committed adultery to avoid laying with his sister.
Cute story about Yamuna and Yama: In my culture, and possibly some others as well, we say that Yamuna gives 'phota' to her brother Yama, and all sisters do the same to the brothers on Bhai-Phota to cover Yama's doors with thorns so he will never be able to take their brothers away. I think Bhai-Dooj, Bhai-Beej and Bhratri-Dwitiya are celebrated similarly.
There is another story, and this one involves coercive intimacy, so skip to #3 if this is uncomfortable for you. In the Bhagwata Purana (and the Agni Purana mentions this in passing), a drunken Balarama spots Yamuna and beckons her to come "play" with him (we all know what that means). She refuses and ignores his calls, so he gets mad and using his plow, diverts her waters into the orchard he was standing in. Now frightened, Yamuna apologises to him and agrees to "play" with him, explaining that she was unable to recognise him as the Supreme Lord. Evidently, this is supposed to be a metaphor for divertion of canals for irrigation.
The Agni Purana depicts her as a dark-complexioned goddess with a pot, and names the tortoise as her vehicle. It also names Yamuna's mother as Rajni, mother of Revanta and daughter of Raivata, and I have no idea who this is. There is one Raivata who is the father of Revati, Balarama's wife, but as far as I was aware he had no daughters named Rajni and Revanta was Sanjana's son so... Idk what happened here. The most likely option is that this Raivata is one of the Rudras, but he could also be the mountain Raivata or the fifth Manu Raivata, because the Agni Purana also mentions all of them them.
3. Sindhu: So, Wikipedia thinks this river is a goddess, sourced from a book called Rivers of the Rigveda by J.N. Ravi. I have always heard of Sindhu being labelled masculine (along with Brahmaputra) at least in my mother tongue. The Mahabharata calls him the Devanada - an exclusively masculine epithet meaning River of the Gods. But wisdom.lib, a mostly reliable website, notes that at one point Sindhu is invited to Parvati's meeting with other goddesses where they discuss the duties of women. I couldn't find it, but then again, Ctrl+F is useless in the MB pdf so eh.
The Rig Veda also appears to refer to Sindhu as a man. I have only the english version, so the accuracy of translation is difficult to pin down, however, Sindhu is compared to a king or lord leading an army (the confluence) and a fleet-footed stallion (but I've also seen a mare translation though smh). SIndhu is also considered to "unite" with several female rivers - Gomati, Shveti etc. And then, right after, Sindhu is called "as handsome as a beautiful woman". Also he is invoked with the goddess Aditi and Saraswati a bunch of times and is listed with the "Goddess Floods". So make of that what you will. Maybe Sindhu is a god who sometimes looks androgynous. Or he is trans as well. Or enby. Or something else. Idk.
Also in one version of Rig Veda I came across Sindhu being called the Dragon of the Deep and I think that's the coolest thing I've read while searching up the rivers.
Varuna is credited with charting out the river Sindhu's course, is very often invoked right before Sindhu, and is also said to glorify Sindhu (Mahabharata, Sabha Parva) so it is safe to say Varuna really likes him.
Interestingly, although he is supposed to be hailed before a battle or a sacrifice, Sindhu's chariot is said to perform no violent deeds. Whether this means the Sindhu river never flooded in those days* or something else, I am not very sure, but quite a few kings of the Bharata lineage sheltered in the Sindhu basin when attacked, so make of that what you will.
*This would be very strange because a) the Sindhu nowadays floods pretty often and b) Sindhu is also called "of the [mighty] floods" a bunch of times. His other epithet is "Sindhu with the path of gold" so it could also mean that Sindhu is a bounteous and fertile river.
It is likely that the region around the Sindhu River was known as Sapta Sindhu, after the seven sacred rivers - Sindhu, Vitasta (Jhelum), Asikli (Chenab/Chandrabhaga), Parushni (possibly Iravati, i.e. Ravi), Vipasha/Arjikiya (Beas), Shatadru (Sutlej) and Sarasvati.
4. Saraswati/Sarasvati: I am going to make a separate post for her because she is, by far, the most interesting of all the rivers when it comes to evolution pre and post Indra-supremacy age and there is a lot more to share.

so guys there's a lady in my neighbour, she's married and have 2 children they're soo young now and omg bhaii she's soo pretty, she often come to visit me and she loves to spend time with me in our backyard. She have that warm and kind aura and there's always a smile on her face. Her skin glows most of the time. She wears a Tulsi mala and we actually started having a conversation when I saw that she wears a Tulsi mala and i asked "do you follow the rules of wearing this mala?" and that's when she told me about her obsession over krishna and obviously I won't stop talking when it comes to Krishna. I really love talking to her. She wears a suit most of the time and as far as I have noticed she loves light colours, ofc she looks like a fairy wearing it. She teaches me about a lot of things i don't know and I feel so lucky about it, her presence have that warmth, her kindness brings a smile on my face. Today, she wore a white chunni and I really loved that. I don't know what to say more but she doesn't come to meet me that often but yes sometimes, when she need curry leaves from our garden and today she took a plant of curry leaves and I get scared thinking that if this plant grows in her house, she will stop coming to my garden. Okay...hear me out..but ear kisses for Sage.
Like just- MC and Sage are cuddling or smth and MC just cups his ear and plants a smooch right there.
And our boy would be sooooo flustered. And then MC plants more, and more and more. And he's just so giggly.
( on the more dirty side note.. cats ears are very sensitive, so with MC warm lips planted on his ears, breath trickling down his fur. He just freaks.)
- No-shame-anon 🤫
I think about Sage's ears. All the time. Actually.
GN!Reader, sort of a scene, suggestive headcanon stuff towards the bottom but nothing too intense so I won't be tagging it as NSFW or anything but I'll have a mini disclaimer, red text is Sage's thoughts, I haven't really done any writing in like a month so sorry if this is bad!!
Sage has always been very particular about his ears. He didn't let you touch them until he really trusted you (he says it was only because he was cold but you know how he is), and if anyone else tries then they get growled at/bit. And when you're brushing his hair, you have to be mindful of his ears. The bristles of the brush can be painful if you don't do it gently enough, and he doesn't like the feeling of it anyways.
But then he manages to get a bunch of gunk in his hair - and no you're not really sure how, he went out drinking with Tulsi and that's the best explanation you're getting - and you're the one that has to wash and comb it out.
So you do. Slowly, carefully, gently, trying not to pull too much. And he grumbles and growls and bites at the brush but that's what he always does anyways. Frankly, he's more well-behaved than usual, though that might just be because he wants it done faster. You talk to him throughout the process, trying to keep him calm. Tell a few stupid jokes, tease him here and there, that sorta thing. It seems to be working...
Until Stella wanders into your room.
Then Sage is trying to jump up to chase her away. You have to wrap your arms around him and hold him in place because running around will only make his hair/tangles worse. And the best way to get him to stop trying to run around?
Smooching his ear!
It stops him cold. Or, well, hot. His cheeks go red and he gets that adorable flustered smile on his face and his tail starts wagging wildly. The more you smooch him, the more he purrs. It's almost enough to make him forget about Stella.
Almost.
Then she hops on your bed and starts gnawing at your pillow and he actually does chase her away.
But now you know a new way to get him flustered!
---
The next time you try it is at the tavern. Sage is getting a little too overstimulated and he can't calm down on his own. It doesn't help that some of his old "friends" are riling him up. 'After all,' they say, 'Sage is only any fun to be around when he's plastered.'
Needless to say you don't like them.
Currently they're trying to pull Sage out of the booth and over to the bar to play darts and do shots. When he tries to turn them down they start needling him, saying he's gone soft. Is he really that whipped? Doesn't he wanna impress you? He better toughen up, or someone else is gonna catch your eye-
You promptly lean over and smooch Sage's cheek. His angry growl softens to an uneasy purr as he finally settles in his seat.
And then you very calmly tell the band to go pound sand (or something much more creative and violent, that's up to you). They finally do back off with a few more mumbled complaints, and you drag Sage out of the tavern to have an emergency cuddle session.
---
Back at Fathom, you've piled your bed full of soft pillows and warm blankets. Sage has his cheek on your shoulder, arms around your waist and tail around your knee. He's sobered up for the most part and is now in sulking mode.
He hasn't gone soft, damnit! He's still Sage Lesath, the super cool-and-sexy mercenary who can kick ass any day of the week! And sure, maybe he likes having his hair brushed and his head patted and his forehead smooched, but that doesn't make him any less badass!
... okay maybe a little less badass. But is that such a bad thing? He knows he doesn't deserve it, but-
You promptly smooch his ear. It's all soft and silky and flutters lightly against your lips. His words end in a surprised little stutter and the tip of his tail flicks and fluffs against your skin.
You keep kissing him over and over and over again while also petting behind his ears and that - combined with the buzzed state he's still in - quickly renders him a giggling mess.
No self-deprication for you!!
He deserves to be cared for and protected. He deserves to be soft if he wants to be. He deserves to be loved. And you'll keep reminding him of that as much as he needs.
He's giggling too much to even try beating himself up anymore. Except he's also purring at the same time so your chest/body is vibrating so much it feels like there's a mini earthquake.
Happy kitty cat :3
-----
Suggestive stuff below!! Nothing too explicit
-----
You don't even have to kiss him to get him flustered. You can just blow some warm air along the edge of his ear. It drives him up the wall.
His inner ear is softer than the backside. The fur is a little more delicate and overall just sensitive.
B,,bit,,,biting his ear?? Sorry that you're getting a little bit of fur in your mouth but ohohoho!! He's putty in your hands. His pupils get massive and he starts rubbing against you and purring and his tail won't stop wagging.
Sometimes when you brush his hair you give his ear a little kiss/bite and then you just get too darn busy to finish brushing!!
He genuinely will just start babbling and even drooling a tiny bit if you do it long enough. Especially if your breath is all warm and heavy and you whisper that he's being such a good boy for you,,,,, oooooh,,,,,, He Just Perishes™

ok YEAH i just found the words to express the frustration i have with stories/characters based on revenge...
there's this all or nothing between a character becoming so consumed by revenge they destroy themselves or the "healthy" choice to leave it behind and choose life, love, happiness ... how many posts talk about loving revenge tropes but often paint them as this inevitable descent into madness and futility, and in that way they always end up being kind of moral instructions through tragedy. if only they had turned away from revenge at the last moment and chosen happiness...
i just went to this herbalism workshop on anger, what plants can be used for and to sustain us through anger... and it wasn't how to heal from anger, like a malevolent force you need to get out of you, how to stop being angry, how to be content... it was more like how to sustain yourself through anger at injustice that is right to feel and anger as an emotion to harness by taking good care of yourself in the midst of its process. how to counteract the damage longterm anger can do to your body so you won't shut down and can continue to fight.
there's something disconcerting about the standard sighing over the tragedy of revenge characters doing their revenge, neglecting to settle down and follow their bliss. what about a perspective of care and support sustaining us through the vengeance, the justice we need? maybe there's a reason for that, that we believe we can only be angry and shut down or so frenzied we're ineffectual and lose everyone we love in the process, or the alternative is abandon justice and investment in the struggle and become happy. maybe its in certain institutions best interests for us to believe those are our only choices...
what about a story where someone on a quest for revenge is sustained and supported in their struggle? why is it always a meltdown of dysfunction and social abandonment? i think if we hear stories like that over and over we believe them and forget what else is possible
P.S. the plants were: burdock, tulsi, hawthorne, linden, and rose
#revenge#plants#thinking about: he xuan. vinland saga. dororo...#ugh i need to rewrite the dororo ending SO BAD#and he xuan not really as in what happens in tgcf but how he's perceived based on what i see in the he xuan tag all the time haha#i think mxtx leaves a lot of space and silence around what is really going on with him but people always read tragedy and failure into it#like its an objective fact#which...?? i'm not sure about it

Farina Bancroft. District Nine. Score: EIGHT.
Farina pinned her hands under her legs to keep them from shaking.
Her palms pressed flush to the cold, metal bench she had been made to wait on, and her back ached from the lack of support for nearly two hours now as the room slowly emptied, one by one.
Sometimes she could hear screaming on the other side of the door. Not those of fear, but those of destruction. Murderous intent. It made her chest constrict to wonder what it might be like to be on the receiving end of such mirthless wrath.
When her name was finally called, she stood and shook out her hands, realizing the pressure from her thighs had made them go numb. She massaged her palms as she walked in, first taking in the Gamemakers, in their usual spot, peering back at her with mixed levels of interest. The training center looked the same as usual, but it was eerily silent, and each station was pristinely set. It made her nerves buzz a little louder– she was expected to fill the silence with her violence. Farina cleared her throat, attempting to smooth any fear away from her expression. She was, after all, a good talker. She could talk, she could act, she could woo. That was the whole game, right? “Hiya. Farina Bancroft. Nine. Sure y’all already know that.”
One of the Gamemakers spoke, something about allotted time, but already her attention had been tugged elsewhere. Time to get moving. She picked up one of the throwing knives, one that looked very similar to the one she’d kept on-hand during training. If the facade worked on tributes, it might work on Gamemakers, too. She flipped the knife in her hand, twirled it, pretended to do so didn’t demand much of her focus.
Farina approached the plants station. Her only saving grace, the only real advantage she may present. She put the knife in her waistband. “M’not much of a hand-to-hand girl, if you can believe it,” she narrated as she pulled a large, silver bowl toward herself, starting to grab at unidentified plants in set around the station in smaller ones. There were so many plants, it might have even given the Bancroft Apothecary a run for its money. “I work with plants. Medicine. That’s my thing back home. My momma’s business, and her momma’s and her momma’s…”
Farina zeroed in on some sharp looking leaves, and carefully extracted them to begin her concoction.
“We can fix everythin’. Joint pain? You got it, some turmeric, ginger, and aloe vera. Gettin’ woozy when you work in the field? Blood pressure problems, tulsi tea every day and, if you can get ahold of ‘em, bananas. Not that we come across a lot of bananas in Nine.”
More plants, berries, and roots were being added with increased fervor, Farina circling the table like a hawk, zeroing in on her prey below to be snatched up for her potion.
“It’s not just normal stuff, though. We get a lot of that usual doctor stuff, sure pain, fever, expectin’ mommas. But pain is pain, and we treat the matters of the heart, too.”
She glanced over at the Gamemakers in a quick assessment of how this was going. Some watched her with interest. A few were eating. One, she was pretty sure, was either asleep or in a drug-induced haze that was about to put her own little science experiment to shame.
“Broken hearts. Protection amulets. Good fortune. Fertility. Loss. Curses.” She crushed some mint leaves between her fingers as she spoke, inhaling the sharp scent– exam luck, believe it or not. Farina wasn’t sure what the connection was there, but it had been taught to her, and she wasn’t taking any fucking chances here.
She pocketed a glass vial off the table, then she seized a pestle, began to crush the ingredients in her bowl, walking toward the Gamemakers. She chose one at random to look square in the eye as she continued her monologue, a woman with long, dark hair. She demanded to be heard by someone, at least.
“We deal in death, too.” She let the silence hang for a moment, filled only by the sound of her pestle, the clink of it against the bowl and grotesque sound of mashing. “Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for someone is help them die. That’s where we’re particularly well-suited. Matters of the body and the heart.”
She put her bowl on the ground, and without a care, stripped off the Capitol-issued t-shirt with a large nine emblazoned on the back, so she was only in her bra and training pants. She laid it out flat and tipped the ingredients into her shirt.
She produced the empty vial again, knelt down, and wrapped the plants up in her shirt to squeeze over the mouth of the receptacle. Slowly, as she twisted and squeezed, a muddy brown liquid trickled out. The Training Center was so quiet she could hear every drop of it against the glass, every wringing squish in the fabric.
When she stood again, she held up the vial for the Gamemakers to see. “There are a few things in here, but I’ll give you the shining stars. Valerian root. It will make the taker drowsy, slow, sedate. Holly berries– they start to do the work, and they add to the drowsiness. A sprinkle of cinnamon, to dilate the blood vessels, make it harder for them to wake. And finally, the big headliner, water hemlock. Near instant death. Everything else in there? Insurance.” She turned the vial in the light, thoughtful. Her voice went soft for a moment. “And if you want to give them blessings for a safe journey, I’d add a little juniper and clover.” Farina was still for a moment, then remembered herself. She removed the knife from her waistband, and poured the poison over the blade, back to her performance persona. “Of course, probably not gonna be feelin’ super sentimental like that in the Arena. Anyway, it’s better to give this to ‘em directly. Spike their tea or something.” She turned to face a nearby dummy, and took a deep breath. She squared her hips like Abel showed her over and over again in the past few days of training, tilted her chin up, focused on her target. With an almighty throw, the knife went sailing across the training floor to land in a dummy’s neck. She’d been aiming for a chest bullseye, but she turned back to the Gamemakers with a pleased grin regardless.
“But lethal injection will do too.”

How to Make Your Tea Business Eco-Friendly – Basketleaf
In today’s world, eco-conscious consumers are increasingly choosing brands that prioritize sustainability. For a tea business, going green not only benefits the environment but also attracts a loyal customer base that values sustainability. If you’re starting a tea business under ₹1 lakh, here are practical, budget-friendly ways to make your brand eco-friendly from the ground up.
1. Source Eco-Friendly Ingredients
Choose suppliers who emphasize organic and sustainable farming practices. Organic tea farms avoid pesticides, which is better for the environment and your customers’ health. While organic products might slightly increase costs, sourcing in small quantities and using local suppliers can help you stay within budget.
Tips for eco-friendly sourcing:
Look for Fair Trade Certified or Rainforest Alliance Certified suppliers, which ensure sustainable and ethical farming.
Consider buying in bulk with other local tea businesses to share costs and reduce packaging waste.
2. Opt for Biodegradable and Reusable Packaging
Tea packaging can often contribute to significant waste. To appeal to eco-conscious consumers, focus on sustainable packaging solutions.
Eco-friendly packaging ideas:
Use biodegradable tea bags or plastic-free, compostable tea sachets.
Replace plastic pouches with recyclable kraft paper or compostable packaging that’s both affordable and sustainable.
Consider offering reusable metal or glass containers with discounts on refills, encouraging customers to bring them back for a refill discount.
3. Minimize Energy Usage in Production
Reducing energy consumption can lower your business costs and environmental impact. Small changes to your day-to-day operations can add up to significant savings over time.
Energy-saving tips:
Use energy-efficient appliances for boiling and storing tea at your shop or kiosk.
If possible, brew tea in larger batches to reduce frequent heating and energy consumption.
Switch to LED lighting and consider a solar-powered setup if you’re setting up a mobile tea cart or kiosk.
4. Source Local Ingredients and Flavors
Local ingredients mean fewer transportation emissions, fresher products, and support for your local economy. Additionally, locally sourced herbs and spices can be unique, attracting customers with fresh flavors that stand out.
How to source locally:
Partner with local farmers and spice markets for ingredients like ginger, tulsi, mint, and cardamom.
Look for regional varieties of tea that align with customer preferences, such as Assam tea for strong flavors or Darjeeling for a more delicate taste.
5. Promote Reusable Drinkware and Utensils
Encourage customers to bring their own mugs or provide reusable cups if you operate a tea stall or caf.
Reusable incentives:
Offer a small discount or reward points to customers who bring their own cup.
Use bamboo stirrers instead of plastic ones and switch to reusable metal straws for iced teas.
If offering takeaways, provide paper or compostable cups rather than plastic ones to reduce waste.
6. Implement a Waste Reduction Program
Efficient waste management is critical in any food business. By reducing waste, you save money and reduce your environmental footprint.
Tips to reduce waste:
Donate or compost used tea leaves instead of discarding them; they make great fertilizers for plants.
Encourage zero-waste practices, like using tea leaves more than once for brews.
Track your inventory closely to avoid over-purchasing and unnecessary spoilage.
7. Go Digital for Marketing
Instead of relying heavily on paper-based marketing materials, use digital marketing to reach customers. Online platforms are not only budget-friendly but also eco-friendly.
Eco-friendly marketing ideas:
Use social media channels to promote special offers and educate customers on sustainability practices.
Send digital loyalty cards or discounts via email or SMS instead of paper.
Consider a QR code menu if you have a physical setup, reducing the need for printed menus.
8. Educate Your Customers on Sustainability
Consumers appreciate transparency and education on eco-friendly practices. Use your brand to educate customers about sustainability efforts.
Ideas to promote awareness:
Place signs at your store or on social media explaining the eco-friendly steps you’re taking.
Include information about your sustainable sourcing or packaging on labels and in-store.
Host a “green tea day” event where you demonstrate your eco-friendly practices or offer special discounts for customers bringing reusable cups.
9. Support Environmental Initiative
Aligning your brand with environmental causes is an effective way to attract eco-conscious customers while contributing positively to the community.
Ways to give back:
Consider donating a portion of profits to local environmental organizations, especially those focused on reforestation or water conservation.
Partner with local eco-groups to host workshops or community events centered around sustainability.
Share information on your packaging about the environmental cause your business supports, such as saving water or reducing plastic.
10. Track Your Eco-Friendly Impact and Improve
Consistently measure your eco-friendly impact to ensure your practices are effective and to identify areas for improvement.
Tracking your impact:
Use monthly reports to measure waste reduction, customer feedback on eco-friendly initiatives, and the savings generated by energy efficiency.
Conduct customer surveys about the eco-friendly changes they’d like to see, incorporating valuable feedback.
Conclusion
Making your tea business eco-friendly doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. With thoughtful planning and affordable solutions, you can start one of the best businesses under ₹1 lakh by creating an eco-conscious brand. Going green not only helps the planet but also resonates with today’s consumers, building brand loyalty and giving you a competitive edge. So start your journey as an eco-friendly tea entrepreneur with Basketleaf, turning small sustainable steps into significant impacts!

EmpowHER at Creating Possibilities
By Tulsi Sharma
Attending the EmpowHER Session I has been a refreshing and impactful experience for me. EmpowHER focuses on cultivating leadership skills, and the Session I was a deep dive into exploring what it truly means to be a leader.
We were involved in many activities during the session, with a great introduction to get things started. As a fun refreshment activity, we expressed our personalities through objects. In the session, I chose to connect myself with a leaf. My reasoning was that just as a leaf is an essential part of a plant, and the plant is part of a larger ecosystem, I too am a small but significant part of the vast universe. This simple connection helped me realize that being part of something so immense is meaningful in itself, and even the smallest contributions hold great value within the bigger picture. This exercise not only allowed us to bond but also sparked meaningful reflection on how seemingly ordinary items can reveal parts of who we are.
The other fun activity was learning facts and myths about a leader. It was based on our personal opinions about leadership qualities. Learning about these qualities made us consider what leaders are truly capable of. For me, the key qualities of a leader are Empathy, Effective Communication, and Integrity.
From the EmpowHER Session I, I could feel a difference within myself. It boosted my confidence and made me believe in myself.
