There are predictions that flight passengers will be 300 million by 2030. In this situation, the demand for aviation graduates is increasing. Many government aviation training institutes and private institutes are being opened in India. Institutes such as GATI (Government Aviation Training Institute) and Top Crew Aviation offer courses like pilot training, air traffic management, and aircraft training.
The DGCA gives institutes approval, and the Ministry of Aviation sets up the various norms and policies for the sector. Airline Pilot Type Training India | Join Pier Seven
Type Rating in Aviation - What is it & How can you get yours?
India is witnessing a once-in-a-generation incredible expansion in the aviation industry, building over 70 new airports by 2030. With a boom of such magnificence, Boeing’s CMO predicts that its fleet will quadruple over the next two decades in South Asia. Various forecasts state that the region will require 37,000 pilots and 38,000 maintenance technicians over the next 20 years, making aviation and upskilling the same, hotspot for aviation enthusiasts and pilots.
Pilot shortages, economic growth, the expansion of air travel, and the retirement of experienced pilots make flying a worthwhile career. As exciting as a career that allows exploring the world sounds, years of training and hard work precede the passion for flying.
A type rating course is just what is needed to give you the edge over the masses who aim to fly big metal birds across the globe. In this Pier Seven Aviation blog, let’s walk through the basics of a Type Rating and how it can help you fly higher.
What is a Type Rating Certificate?
Type Rating is an aircraft certification granted by aviation authorities to pilots upon completion of a specialized training program. The certificate qualifies the pilot to operate the aircraft and must be maintained through recurrent training and testing annually.
The certification ensures that the pilot has the necessary knowledge to navigate an airplane and is aware of its workings. A type rating course typically covers a detailed study of aircraft systems, standard operating procedures (SOPs), emergency procedures, and regulatory compliance.
Do I need a Type Rating?
Continuous learning and skill development are crucial for pilots aiming to advance their careers further. Type rating courses equip pilots with the expertise to operate a wider range of aircraft, making them an ideal candidate for potential employers.
Completing a type rating course goes beyond acquiring the certification; it involves gaining in-depth knowledge and practical experience in navigating complex aircraft systems. A type rating certificate allows pilots to stand out in a competitive industry.
Pilots who undergo type rating courses demonstrate a commitment to professional development and excellence, which can give them a competitive edge when vying for career advancements, promotions, or coveted positions within top airlines.
Am I eligible to apply for a Type Rating?
To qualify for a Type Rating course, one must hold a valid Commercial Pilot License and a Class 1 Medical. If you match the above list of requirements, you are eligible to apply for the course.
What are the different Type Rating?
At Pier Seven Aviation, you can choose between an Airbus A320 Type Rating (DGCA India), a Boeing B737-NG Type Rating (DGCA India) or an Airbus A320 Type Rating (WASA), each of them catering to different requirements within the industry, with onsite theoretical and practical training across all the courses.
How do I choose my Type Rating?
At Pier Seven Aviation, you can choose between pursuing a course in accordance with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation India (DGCA) or the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), with simulator training under both authorities, you can choose a program that best fits your long term career goals within the industry.
How Pier Seven can help you achieve your target?

My reflections on the book "Shoe dog" by Phil Knight
The book called "Shoe dog" written by Phil Knight is a memoir of the creator of shorts apparel "Nike" with the notorious slogan "Just do it!"
Here I will reflect on it in several parts as I read through the book. I will indicate the dates and chapters I read to capture ideas and interesting facts.
Reflection 1. pages 1-41
The book starts from the author sharing his experience of running in the dawn one day in Oregon, USA in small town called Portland. It was in 1962 and he was back to his parents house after seven years since he left them. He studied at the University of Oregon, then did his master's from a top business school - Stanford, served a year in the US Army.
The author describes himself as shy, pale and rail-thin 24 years old kid. Even though he is 24, he felt himself as a young kid coming back to parents' house and live in his own room. He also mentioned that he questioned what he wants and would become. He had no idea at that point. However, his project paper on exporting shoes that he worked during the MBA Entrepreneurship class excited him and he dreamed about it because he was an athlete himself and knew a lot about running. So, he called this idea as a crazy idea throughout first few chapters.
Then pitched his crazy idea to his father one evening. His father was very respectful man in Oregon and was a publisher of Oregon Journal and apparently he was above average class worker at that time. Surprisingly to the author his father was supportive and he started to prepare to his trip, the world trip.
He convinced his college friend to join the journey and started it from Hawaii. Once they landed in the airport of Hanolulu, the beautiful islands they wanted to hang on there for a while. They find a job as salesmen of encyclopedias and later Phil started selling securities though conducting many cold phone calls and closing deals. He succeeds but his crazy idea motivates him to leave his friend behind (his friend found a girlfriend and wanted to be with her) and flies to Japan. In Japan he manages to convince 4 executives of one shoe company (Onitsuka & Co, in Kobe) to become their representative in the US. Phil describes that morning meeting with Onitsuka representatives in details how he felt and tons of controversial ideas flew through his mind and how surprisingly well his peach was and how odd Japanese culture was. Then he continued his journey to Malaysia, Thailand, Hong-Kong, Vietnam, India, Nepal, Cairo, Jerusalem, Turkey, Rome, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, UK, Greece. The trip took him almost six months (he left on 7 September 1962 and returned 24 February 1963).
Interesting facts:
Phil Knight was called Buck by his family members and friends;
He learned and quite good mastered surfing while living in Hanolulu;
He was in Hawaii while the cold war between US and Soviet contry reached it's peak and everyone was expecting start of WW3;
His father's friends from United Press Internationals helped him to get around in Tokyo and collected to former colleages who were importing goods from Japan.
He tension between US and Japan after the WW2 felt so recent when he arrived to Tokyo as many buildings remain damaged after the bombing;
how weird the Jananize culture, they don't say yes or no and always talk in circles that you can't expect clear answer from them;
He made up the company which he represented to Onitsuka. He called it "Blue Ribbon Sports of Portland, Oregon" :-). These blue ribbons were from his past tracks (marathons) that he was proud of.
Isn't it interesting that at the age of 24 and be able to visit 16 countries in six months.
Reflection 2. pages 42-76 (1963-1964 years)
Throughout the year of 1963, Phil completed the accounting courses (yes, even more school) and got his CPA (Certified Public Account) certification then started working in an accounting firm Ross Bros.&Montgomery. The accounting company branch in Portland was very small and from November to April the workload was enormous. They worked twelve hours a day, six days a week. So, this year passed away while he was still waiting for his sports shoes from Japan.
After the new year, Phil got his first box with sports shoes (twelve pairs) and was impressed with the quality and appearance. He describes them as they were more than beautiful and he hasn't seen any other shoes like them in Italy or France. He immediately sends two pairs to his track coach at Oregon, Bill Bowerman. Bowerman was a brilliant coach and natural leader of young people with enormous obsession of gear for running. He had spend days on modifying the footwear of his athletes, improving them so they run like deer. Phil hoped that Bowerman would place order for the shoes for his athletes which he did. Eventually, they agreed to be a partners with 51/49 percent share of the deal and Phil be in control.
Second time, Phil placed 300 pairs of shoes worth of 3,000$ and became official distributor in the West US after receiving a confirmation letter from Mr Miyazaki, one of representatives of the Onitsuka company. Few months later he received a letter from another person from New York who claimed that he is only official distributor of Onitsuka. To clarify and get this straighten he went to Japan and met with the head of Onitsuka, Mr. Onitsuka himself. Apparently, all his executives were scared of Mr. Onitsuka but Phil's meeting went very well and he had gotten the confirmation that he would be the one offical distributor of his shoes in the West US. (The other person, in New York apparently was selling wrestling shoes and not the track shoes. Thus, Phil will be selling the track shoes in West US while the other representative will be selling wrestling shoes nationwide and track shoes only in the East Cost). After this high-level meeting he goes to climb the Mount Fuji, where he met his love, a girl named Sarah. He had fallen in love with her. She visits him after several weeks and they celebrate Christmas (1964) together. On the other occasion she visited him for couple of weeks. However, her parents prohibited her from dating with Phil. Eventually, she drops him. He goes through enormous heartbreak and with support of one of his twin sisters, Jeanne, he resumes his work with the Blue Ribbon (selling the shoes).
In 1965 the year starts from the request of his former classmate, Jeff Johnson to become his sales representative because the pair of shoes that Phil send him were great and everyone was interested to buy. Eventually, he starts selling the shoes and overwhelms Phil with mail communication by sending daily mails. Jeff being a social worker loved socializing and decided to quit his social work and unite with runners and became full time sales person of Blue Ribbon. Jeff's persistence wins and he becomes the first full time sales with the salary of 400$ (even as a social worker he got 460$).
A friend of his father gave advice on Phil's career path saying that anyone changes jobs at least three times and each time they have to start all over again. So, he advised Phil to get his CPA while he is young. The CPA (Certified Public Account) along with MBA will put solid floor under the earnings. This way he can change jobs but will always maintain his salary level. Nice advice, isn't it?
Phil bought shoes (tiger model) for 3.33$ per pair and sold it for 6.95$ in the US.
During the flight to Japan, Phil was so nervous that he was trying to memorize a content of the book "How to do business with the Japanese".
in 1965 running wan't a sport. Apparently, people mocked the runners. Drivers would throw a beer or soda at them.
Reflection 3. pages 77-??? (1965-1980 years)
There were a lot happening starting from breaking up with Onitsuka in extremely unpleasant way, going through the trial and winning it, launch of new Blue Ribbon's brand "Nike", recruitment of promising athletes, constant shortage of cash and many other challenges that will be described below.
Blue Ribbon (BR) started to grow in sales with 100% growth each year. In 1967, it had Johnson on the East Coast and Bork in California. In addition, Bowerman recommended several people, including Bob Woodell who played a crucial role in the development of BR. He was a promising athlete (a track star) if not an accident where he injured his vertebra and had no hope of walking. Even though Bob was in the wheelchair, he had a strong stamina and will and never complained and furiously tackled all challenges at BR. At one moment, when Phil desperately needed cash to close his debt Bob's parents had given him all their savings. In 1974 there was a trial with Onisutka and Pre died. In 1975 BR bought their first factory in the US and started repairing it for 250,000
Cash. 150,000 in sales in 1968, 300,000 in sales in 1969, 1.3 million USD in 1971,
Phil's personal life. He was working as an accountant at Price Waterhouse for almost two years (1966-1967), then he became an assistant professor at Portland State University in Fall 1967. His aim was to free up time to dedicate to BR. At the university he had met his wife and married her within a year. She started working at BR and after four months they started dating and exchanged their vows on 13 September 1968. Phil quits teaching next year and accidentally learned that one of students were looking for a job and he offered to be design print ads, logoes, visuals for presentations (it was Caroly Davidson, who created a today's Nike swoosh). Phil describes himself as absentminded (he would drive to the grocery store and come home empty-handed, without the one item Penny asked. It was because of many business problems he had). Also, he apparently misplaced everything at home, especially wallets and keys. Besides, he wasn't housebroken. He left his clothes everywhere, left food on the counter, etc. Moreover, he was into himself. He was lost in his own thoughts, trying to solve some problems and developing plans. He didn't hear her or remember what she said. Finally, he hated loosing anything. He always blamed someone, remembered how his father didn;t let him win ping-pong when he was a child. On top of this, Penny had to manage tiny (25 USD per week) budget for groceries. In September 1969, they had a first baby (boy whom they named Matthew). In search of a new shoe supplier he agrees to do a business in a factory called, Canada in Guadalajara, Mexico. They produced first batch of the shoes but the quality was poor and shoes broke down quickly. Then BR had problems with the First National bank and Ito, from Nissho basically saved them and payed all the load fully after carefull examination of BR's accounting books. I stopped at page 255. he almost always was tongue-tied. loss of words,
Person:
Bowerman, Olympics trainer of track runners, very ambitious, meticulous, callous, persistent.
Hiraku Iwano, personal assistant of Kitami, one of Onitsuka's main representatives. Iwano in his twenties, innocent, just a kid.
Nissho Iwai, Japanese trading company, who helped BR a lot by loaning the cash. he believed that BR was very promising and could be 20 mln worth company. Ito is another person from this company, he was the most smartest man Phil ever met, meticulous, super confident, so self-assured. Phil called him the Ice Man.
Kitami, Onitsutka's main representative. He once played a guitar and sang an Italian song in the voice of an Irish tenor. The room was surreal. He proposes to sell the BR and later he refuses saying it. Onitsuka's plan was to replace BR with other distributors.
Pre, promising young athlete who changed after 1972 olympics and was never the same. He died at age of 24 in a car accident.
Bob Strasser, young lawyer, who helped BR win the case over Onitsutka and later because the partner of BR. His was best at negotiations. However, when Nike went public he stopped listening Phil and left the company. He joined adidas and Phil took it as betrail.

Pairing: Loki x Desi!F!Reader
Warnings: None
Genre: Pure Fluff
Requested: By @marvel-madness
Hi there! Could you do a Loki x Desi American!reader where she takes everyone to a holi festival? And it’s super adorable and kinda crack!fic at the same time?
Summary: Y/N, an American born Desi, takes her friends, the Avengers, to India to show them what a real party looks like.
Author's Note: Hi!!! A huge thanks to @marvel-madness for requesting this fic and sending the prompt! It was amazing to write! For the Indian friends, I used the names of my own friends (and I oop). I hope y'all desis reading this enjoy it! Sorry if it's crappy I tried my best—
---
Loki stared at his girlfriend of 8 months in confusion. He was confused as to why she was staring at the calendar so longingly. "Um, love, is anything—" She groaned loudly, startling him. "I wanna go! I wanna go home so bad! Haaye mein mar jawa…" That phrase was spoken in Punjabi, even though Loki knew his girlfriend was of Marathi origins.
He didn't understand it, but her sadness was clear. "What happened? Where do you want to go?" he asked soothingly, wrapping his arms around her. "Back to India! The festival of Holi is in a week and my family is inviting me. I want to go, but…" she sighed, turning around in his arms. Y/N was a second generation desi American, her parents having moved to New York.
Y/N was born here, but she had a lot of family back in India. She loved Bollywood, the Indian festivals, the culture, the food, everything. Every year, she went to India during the festival of Holi, it being her favorite one. This year, though, things seemed difficult. Now she was a part of the Avengers and had a lot of work. If only she could get a 2 week break.
"But what? You have to go! It's your favorite festival, you've told me that a hundred times," Loki scoffed as she buried her face in his chest. "I know! But the Avengers, my work…" she whined. "Don't worry about that, we'll be fine," Loki laughed. Suddenly, she had a brilliant idea. They should go to India with her! "Why don't you come with me?"
"Me? Uh… okay, I don't have plans, visiting India sounds nice…" Loki stammered, taken aback. "Not only you, all of you! Thor, Tony, Steve, Nat, Bruce, Clint, Wanda, Vision, Sam, Bucky… I'll take you to a brilliant Holi festival! You'll have a lot of fun," Y/N said excitedly, jumping up and down. Loki smiled softly at her excitement.
"Why don't we call a meeting and ask them?"
Fifteen minutes later, all the aforementioned people were assembled in the sitting room, smiling at the couple. "So, did Loki propose? Are you getting married? Is Y/N pregnant?" Loki and Y/N rolled their eyes at Tony's questions while the others laughed. "This one is pretty mild. I have a question to ask you all." Steve beckoned for Y/N to go on, everyone listening attentively.
"As you all know, the festival of Holi is a week away, and I've been to India for the festival every single year of my life. This year, too, there isn't a problem with me going there but I wanna ask… any of you interested in tagging along?" For a few seconds, all was silent. Y/N grew nervous, should she not have asked? She got startled badly when everyone cheered loudly.
"We're going to India! We're going to India! Finally!"
A wide smile bloomed on Y/N's face; she glanced at Loki to see him already looking at her with a smile of his own. "Okay, my dudes, start packing! We leave tomorrow! Can we borrow your private jets, Tones?" He agreed instantly, hugging Y/N. "We better get to packing," Steve laughed, running out of the room with Nat, Wanda, Sam and Bucky.
---
"Ugh… so… hot…"
"It was your idea to come to India, Y/N."
"Yeah, we feel fine."
Y/N glared at her teammates, which caused them to look at her smugly. Their jet had just landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, in Mumbai. One of Y/N's relatives lived in a huge apartment complex in Mumbai, and she had invited their other relatives, too. Every year, that complex saw the best Holi party ever, complete with water, colours, bhaang, songs and dance.
Y/N had been there a couple times. The Avengers and herself had decided to stay at a nearby hotel. Being 12 people, they had booked 6 double rooms in one of the hotels at the airport, called Grand Hyatt. The entire trip was sponsored by Tony Stark. Since Tony and Bruce spoke Hindi a little bit and Y/N… well, she was Indian, they decided to get 3 cabs.
In one cab sat Loki, Y/N, Thor and Vision, in the second sat Tony, Steve, Wanda and Nat while in the third cab sat Bruce, Clint, Sam and Bucky. Their cab arrived at the hotel, they checked in and went to their rooms.
---
"Loki, Lokes, wakey-wakey!"
Loki blinked his eyes open at the persistent awakening, turning over on the hotel bed. Y/N grabbed his shoulder, shaking him. "What? It's… 7 in the morning!" he whined shamelessly, pushing her hands away. "It'll take us 15 minutes to reach the apartment complex but the celebrations start early there," Y/N insisted. He sighed, right, today was the day of Holi.
"Fine, I'm getting up," he muttered as he sat up. Y/N stood in front of him, wearing a white kurti and white pants underneath. She looked so beautiful, he couldn't resist pulling her on his lap. "Loki," Y/N chuckled bashfully as he kissed her cheek. She turned her head to face him and placed a proper kiss to his lips. "That dress is beautiful, like you," he whispered to her.
She giggled, giving him a hug. "Okay, go get ready, I need to wake the others up," she smiled, pushing away from him. He nodded and stood up, stretching. He picked up his suitcase which was kept in the corner of the room while Y/N left to wake the others up. He picked out a white t-shirt and a pair of jeans.
Y/N had explained to the others how wearing white during the festival was the best option. Everyone had brought along a white tee to wear. He first cleaned up and wore his clothes, finally sitting down to apply some oil to the exposed parts of his body. Y/N said it helped the colours come out faster. After preparing, he grabbed the room keys and left, locking the door.
---
"Y/N! How are you? I thought you wouldn't visit this year," Krsna, one of Y/N's friends, grinned as she moved to hug her. The Avengers quietly stood behind, taking in all the beautiful sights. The buildings were decorated, there was a drinks table nearby, the colours were neatly kept on another table and nearly 30 other people there. Many children, a few adults and even fewer oldies.
Since Y/N visited the apartment complex nearly every single year, you could say she practically grew up with the kids there, meaning Krsna and a few others. They had formed a strong bond.
Most of the kids were staring at these foreigners in shock and awe. "Hell no! I wouldn't miss my favorite festival for anything. Meet my friends." Krsna gathered a few of her friends too, namely Shruti, Drishti, Harsh and Ritvik. "This is Loki," Y/N introduced first. Loki moved forward to wrap his arms around his girl from behind, smiling at her Indian friends.
"Oooh," Harsh smirked, which earned him a slap on the arm from Krsna. "Kadhi pasun?" Drishti asked cheekily, crossing her arms. "Since 8 months," Y/N replied, shaking her head. She quickly introduced the others too. They were a bit surprised, because holy hell, the Avengers but they got over their shock immediately. "This place looks nice," Wanda commented.
"Thank you! We usually start preparing a week before Holi," Ritvik grinned. Harsh, Drishti and Ritvik decided to give the Avengers a tour of the apartment complex and they readily agreed to go along with them. Loki, Y/N, Tony, Natasha, Krsna and Shruti decided to stay back. "Tujhya mom dad la mahiti aahe?" Shruti questioned, motioning towards Loki.
"Ho! Tyana kahi farak nahi padla," Y/N laughed, sending a smile in Loki's direction. "New York ka kya? Isne hi kiya tha na? News mein dekha meine…" Krsna asked worriedly. "Don't worry about that! Abhi thik ho gaya hai ye…" Y/N winked. Loki was trying his hardest to decipher what they were saying, but all in vain. As Tony stood to the side, listening to the three ladies talking in their native tongue, he noticed a few people walking up to him.
They were small kids, around 8-9 years old. "Happy Holi!" one boy grinned, raising his colour filled hands up to wipe them on Tony's cheeks. Tony grinned broadly, taking some colour to return the favor. "Happy Holi, kid!" he said happily. Natasha joined him, applying some red colour to the kids' cheeks. The kids led them somewhere and the two of them went readily.
Y/N looked around the place, trying to find her friends. She smiled proudly when she saw everyone enjoying themselves. A few of them were talking to the adults, most of them were playing with the kids and Wanda was following Drishti, who was teaching her a dance step to the songs that were playing. The scene warmed her heart. As she enjoyed the scene, a water balloon collided hard with her back.
She turned, shocked, only for Loki to cover her face in pink colour. He ruffled her hair, screaming 'Happy Holi'. "Grr, get back, a-hole!" she screamed, quickly wiping her face before she took off running after him. Krsna handed her a water balloon and with expert precision, Y/N threw it at Loki. It hit his back. He turned around and smirked at her.
She grabbed a handful of colour and went to each of her friends, applying colour to their faces and wishing them a happy holi. She chatted with some of the aunties of the society, and also wished her relatives. Soon, the volume of the songs increased and party, holi songs started playing. The first song was Balam Pichkari. Y/N cheered loudly, dancing along with some of the others.
"Balam pichkari, jo tune mujhe maari, toh seedhi saadhi chori sharabi ho gayi!" Y/N sang along, enjoying very much. Loki stood to the side and took out his phone, discreetly taking a few photos as she enjoyed. By the end of 2 hours, all the Avengers were soaked in water, every single colour visible on their clothes, their faces and their hair. They were a bit drunk, having had nearly 4 glasses of bhaang each. Still, they had huge grins on their faces.
"Stay for lunch! We also organize lunch! After lunch and ice cream, we also have a game of housie but I'd understand if you—" Y/N scoffed, cutting off Ritvik's trail of words. "We're staying for as long as we can! We'll be back in about an hour, after cleaning up." She checked the time, it was 12 noon. "Sure, sure. We'll be waiting. Bye!" Harsh, Krsna, Shruti, Drishti and Ritvik waved as the Avengers walked out of the complex.
"Did you enjoy?" Y/N asked the Avengers immediately. "Of course we did! This was the most fun I've had in years. I wanna celebrate Holi every year now," Wanda squealed. Everyone agreed with her. "See? Indian festivals, always the best," Y/N winked. They booked cabs, went to their hotels and cleaned up, taking a bath and wearing fresh clothes.
They went back to the apartment complex just in time for lunch. Everyone there had also cleaned up. As Y/N watched her friends mingle with her Indian friends, she made up her mind— to bring the Avengers to every single Holi party from that year onwards.
---
A/N: Yeeeee!!!! I'm sad because I couldn't play Holi this year [one of my relatives passed away, RIP :')] but writing this released dopamine in my brain.
For those of you who don't know-
Balam Pichkari is very famous Bollywood song related to Holi
Bhaang is kind of an alcoholic drink prepared from milk (?)
I've mostly used Hindi and Marathi since those two are the Indian languages I speak (I can also speak Gujarati and understand Telugu, which is my father tongue) but yeah :/
I hope you like this!!

Last week someone asked if I knew of any good lists of memoirs and coming-of-age novels. We do have a list of memoirs, but that was created four years ago and several more have been published since then that we’d recommend. I couldn’t recall or find a list like she was describing for coming-of-age books either, so the librarian in me felt the need to make one. Here’s an updated collection of memoirs along with a few coming-of-age novels. If you know of others written by BIPOC authors that you would recommend, please share the titles.
Memoirs
All Boys Aren’t Blue: A Memoir-Manifesto by George M. Johnson Farrar, Straus and Giroux (Byr)
In a series of personal essays, prominent journalist and LGBTQIA+ activist George M. Johnson explores his childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. From the memories of getting his teeth kicked out by bullies at age five, to flea marketing with his loving grandmother, to his first sexual relationships, this young-adult memoir weaves together the trials and triumphs faced by Black queer boys.
Both a primer for teens eager to be allies as well as a reassuring testimony for young queer men of color, All Boys Aren’t Blue covers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy. Johnson’s emotionally frank style of writing will appeal directly to young adults.
Almost American Girl: An Illustrated Memoir by Robin Ha Balzer & Bray/Harperteen
For as long as she can remember, it’s been Robin and her mom against the world. Growing up as the only child of a single mother in Seoul, Korea, wasn’t always easy, but it has bonded them fiercely together.
So when a vacation to visit friends in Huntsville, Alabama, unexpectedly becomes a permanent relocation–following her mother’s announcement that she’s getting married–Robin is devastated.
Overnight, her life changes. She is dropped into a new school where she doesn’t understand the language and struggles to keep up. She is completely cut off from her friends in Seoul and has no access to her beloved comics. At home, she doesn’t fit in with her new stepfamily, and worst of all, she is furious with the one person she is closest to–her mother.

Banned Book Club by Kim Hyun Sook, Ryan Estrada, Hyung-Ju Ko (Illustrator) Iron Circus Comics [Crystal’s Review] [Q&A with Authors – in a Comic]
When Kim Hyun Sook started college in 1983 she was ready for her world to open up. After acing her exams and sort-of convincing her traditional mother that it was a good idea for a woman to go to college, she looked forward to soaking up the ideas of Western Literature far from the drudgery she was promised at her family’s restaurant. But literature class would prove to be just the start of a massive turning point, still focused on reading but with life-or-death stakes she never could have imagined.
This was during South Korea’s Fifth Republic, a military regime that entrenched its power through censorship, torture, and the murder of protestors. In this charged political climate, with Molotov cocktails flying and fellow students disappearing for hours and returning with bruises, Hyun Sook sought refuge in the comfort of books. When the handsome young editor of the school newspaper invited her to his reading group, she expected to pop into the cafeteria to talk about Moby Dick, Hamlet, and The Scarlet Letter. Instead she found herself hiding in a basement as the youngest member of an underground banned book club. And as Hyun Sook soon discovered, in a totalitarian regime, the delights of discovering great works of illicit literature are quickly overshadowed by fear and violence as the walls close in.

Infinite Hope: A Black Artist’s Journey from WWII to Peace by Ashley Bryan Atheneum Books
In May of 1942, at the age of eighteen, Ashley Bryan was drafted to fight in World War II. For the next three years, he would face the horrors of war as a black soldier in a segregated army.
He endured the terrible lies white officers told about the black soldiers to isolate them from anyone who showed kindness–including each other. He received worse treatment than even Nazi POWs. He was assigned the grimmest, most horrific tasks, like burying fallen soldiers…but was told to remove the black soldiers first because the media didn’t want them in their newsreels. And he waited and wanted so desperately to go home, watching every white soldier get safe passage back to the United States before black soldiers were even a thought.
For the next forty years, Ashley would keep his time in the war a secret. But now, he tells his story. The story of the kind people who supported him. The story of the bright moments that guided him through the dark. And the story of his passion for art that would save him time and time again.

Hearts Unbroken by Cynthia Leitich Smith Candlewick Press

The editors pair her up with Joey Kairouz, the ambitious new photojournalist, and in no time the paper’s staff find themselves with a major story to cover: the school musical director’s inclusive approach to casting The Wizard of Oz has been provoking backlash in their mostly white, middle-class Kansas town. From the newly formed Parents Against Revisionist Theater to anonymous threats, long-held prejudices are being laid bare and hostilities are spreading against teachers, parents, and students — especially the cast members at the center of the controversy, including Lou’s little brother, who’s playing the Tin Man. As tensions mount at school, so does a romance between Lou and Joey — but as she’s learned, “dating while Native” can be difficult. In trying to protect her own heart, will Lou break Joey’s?

Yes No Maybe So by Aisha Saeed & Becky Albertalli Balzer & Bray/Harperteen [Group Discussion]
YES
Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate–as long as he’s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone) Jamie’s a choke artist. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya.
NO
Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing–with some awkward dude she hardly knows–is beyond her.
MAYBE SO
Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer–and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural crush of the century is another thing entirely.

Chapter 3
6th September, 7:30am - Dehradun Hotel, India
Meera barely noticed the morning chatter at the breakfast table, the voices becoming dull thuds in her mind. As she dozed off for the tenth time, her mother snapped. "You just woke up Meera! How can you still be sleepy? People in the mornings are usually active, bright-eyed and alert! Yet here you are going back to sleep." "Who said I slept last night?" spoke Meera, unsuccessfully trying to stifle her yawn, "With you and Poppy snoring into my ears, I could hardly sleep." "We don't snore that bad," said her mother, defensively. "Have you ever hear... (yawn) Have you ever even heard yourself snore?" replied a sleepy Meera. "I slept peacefully in my room. Just like a baby," Rohan chimed in with a smug smile. Her sleep deprived brain could not think of a clever repertoire. At least she would fall asleep on the ride to Mussoorie, hopefully avoiding the nasty motion sickness.
6th September, 9:15am - Delhi, India
🎶tring, tring, tring, tring🎶
Chris heard the faint chime of the landline in his room. Struggling to find it in the darkness, Chris finally answered the call. The receptionist on the other end of the line was kind. She patiently reminded him about the wake-up call that had been scheduled by him and informed him about the buffet breakfast. The Evans family had reached the fancy hotel in the wee hours of the morning. It had been a relief to exit the Delhi airport sans the company of the media. Jet-lagged and exhausted, they had all collapsed into their beds. Even Chris had fallen asleep as soon as his head had touched the pillow. He now stretched on the bed, missing the warmth of his adorable canine. He knew the best way to deal with jet-lag was to condition your body to the local timezone. After freshening up, he headed towards the buffet, seeking to eat his breakfast in peace.
As there were no direct flights from Boston to Dehradun, they had decided to stay for a day in Delhi, just to rest their bones. Tomorrow, they would catch the flight to Dehradun. As Chris understood, their hotel in Mussoorie was around 6 hours away from Dehradun airport. He did not look forward to the excessive travel. He knew they would all be tired out for a week before they started feeling normal again.
He was soon joined by his family for breakfast. A large family of 7 Americans was not an unusual sight for the patrons of this hotel. Being one of the most luxurious and expensive hotels in the city, tourists from across the world flocked to the 5-star property. The best part? Nobody recognized them, especially Chris. While Chris did have a huge fan following in India, he was not immediately recognisable with his large beard and overgrown hair.
"Do we have anything planned for today?" Chris confirmed with Carly as she demolished her pancakes, "Not really. The hotel did offer a tour of the local tourist hotspots, but I didn't think anyone would be up for a day out." "Especially in this heat," chimed in Shanna. "From what I Google searched, Delhi has beautiful forts and structures. There are even expansive gardens in the city! Maybe we can visit just one site before leaving tomorrow?" suggested their mother Lisa. "I will check with the concierge and see what they recommend," offered Scott.
Chris settled back in his room after the breakfast, checking-in with Tara about Dodger. He dozed off while waiting for a reply.
Same day, 11:40pm - Dehradun-Mussoorie road
Meera woke up with a jerk as the car pulled around a corner, her heart beating fast. They were on the last portion of the winding roads, almost at the top of the hill. Dazed, she looked around the SUV, her mother and brother were wide awake and Poppy had nodded off. From the window, Meera saw the mountains and trees in all their glory, but the motion of the car lulled her exhausted mind back to sleep.
Almost 20 minutes later, she woke up again as her mother gently taped her on the shoulder. "We have reached," she quietly said, "Are you feeling okay?" Blinking her eyes, Meera managed to say yes. Chilly breeze greeted her as she opened the door of the car. Audibly shuddering, she shut the door, reluctant to leave the warm vehicle. Her brother pulled it open again, "Wake up sleepy head! Look how beautiful it is!" "It is COLD," replied Meera hoarsely, still struggling to find her bearings. "Okay look, it is just 10 steps from the car to the hotel's entrance. Just 10 steps! Then you will be in nice toasty-warm lobby. Let's go! The hills are calling us! Let's go let's go!!" Meera smiled at her brother's exuberance. Mountains had the same effect on him that beaches had on her. Bracing herself for the cold, Meera dashed from the car and into the hotel.
Maple-Fawn was one of the few 5-star hotels in Mussoorie. The international company had a chain of hotels in the country, but their property at this hill-station had been voted as one of the bests. The lobby section was intimidating to say the least. White marble flooring, polished wood-panelled walls, and elegant paintings and statues gave a sophisticated, warm vibe. As the family was checking-in, the male concierge asked for Meera, "Welcome to Maple-Fawn everyone. Do we have a Mrs Meera Shankar amongst us?" "It is Ms Meera Shankar, and that would be me," she replied. "Hello ma'am. I am Ankur, the resident concierge of this property. As I am led to believe, you are the one with the food allergies, correct?" "Yes absolutely." "We received your email ma'am, the one with the list of foods you are allergic to, and a couple of recipes which would suit you. Can we discuss it once you are settled-in?" "Oh right yes. How about we meet again after one hour?" "Sure ma'am. I will meet you with the chef in your room," confirmed Ankur.
The receptionist handed them the key cards to their rooms. "As I can see in the system, you have booked two rooms, with the 3 women living in one room and Mr Rohan living in another. Would you like to have a single bed mattress in your room ma'am? It would be more comfortable," suggested the receptionist. As her mother refused after hearing the cost for the extra mattress, Meera had to chuckle. Even the receptionist must have wondered how will 3 fat women fit on a queen-sized bed, she thought.
"Why should we spend so much money on a mattress when we call all sleep together on the same bed?" argued Meera's mother as they reached their rooms, "We have already spent so much on this expensive hotel, I am certainly not paying for anything extra." Meera's face fell as she heard those words. It had been difficult to find a hotel which would cater to her food allergies. While various brands offered food for people who were strictly vegetarian or vegan, the hotel staff, usually the chefs, could never wrap their minds around how could a person be allergic to so many things. Luckily, Maple-Fawn had been accommodating, but being on the upper-end luxurious side of things, the stay at the hotel itself had costed them around 4 months of Rohan's salary. "I will get to snuggle-up to my daughter on the same bed and sleep. I can't wait!" continued Meera's mother. "Creep," muttered Meera.
But despite herself, Meera had to admit, the view from their room was to die for...
Same day, 3pm - Delhi
Chris awoke to someone ringing the doorbell of his room. Stumbling across the room in the darkness, he opened the door to see Carly. "Hey Chris, we are going to Rori gardens, do you want to tag along?" "What? Which gardens?" "Rori, or something like that. I don't understand most of the names here," sheepishly admitted Carly. "Should I show you the brochure?" Nodding his reply, Chris stepped aside to let Carly in. "Oh God, it is dark in here, let there be light!" "No wait sto..." But before Chris could finish his sentence, Carly had opened the curtains, flooding the room with bright sunlight. "Aargh" Chris groaned at the sudden light, hidding under the covers on his bed. Laughing, Carly tried to pull the covers off of him, but Chris held on tight. "C'mon you big baby! You are worse than your niece and nephews! Even they are playing in the swimming pool and here you are, hiding underneath the covers!" "It's too bright! Turn down the sun!" Chris whined. "No way! Get up now! See this garden looks like fun. Don't stay held up in your room." Chris muttered something. "Christopher Evans, come out now or else I WILL tickle you!" Carly threatened. Uncovering his head, Chris opened one eye, "What do you want, you Kraken monster?!" Carly smiled, it had been too long since Chris had called her by the nickname. A change of location was maybe just what he needed afterall.
Chris met Carly, Scott and Lisa in the lobby, Shanna choosing to stay behind with the kids. Their hotel, Maple-Fawn, had provided them with a guide and comfortable cars. If Chris wasn't mistaken, they were going to stay at the brand's property in Mussoorie as well. "What is the name of the garden again?" Chris asked their Guide. "They are called Lodhi Gardens," came the prompt reply. "It is spread over 90 acres and contains some of the best landscaping seen here in Delhi. The garden is also home to tombs of various kings who had once ruled Delhi." "Oh so it's a graveyard," inquired Scott excitedly. Chris chucked at his brother's excitement. "Not at all sir," replied their Guide, "The garden is used as a park, where people jog, do yoga, exercise and kids play around. You will get an idea once we reach."
While the road to Lodhi Gardens had been full of traffic and commotion, the place itself was peaceful and serene. Tall trees surrounded the walkways, manicured green lawns with flower beds covered the uneven terrain, while the graves of the bygone kings were nothing like the Evans family had seen before. These were ancient structures, with delicate ornate carvings on the walls. "Woah," whispered Scott, "If these are their graves, then I can't even imagine how royal their palaces must have been!"
Chris caught himself smiling. As much as he willed himself not to feel happiness, he couldn't help but feel a little bit relaxed. Lodhi Gardens were beautiful.

Gettng To Know You
Summary: Having now agreed to travel with the Doctor, Rory decides to ask some questions. Sequel to The Doctor And The Nurse. and A Fishy Tail. Author’s Note: Just a small fic this time. I will hopefully write more soon. Enjoy. ********************************************* Rory finished putting away the clothes he’d brought with him before he set the only picture that he’d brought with him on the bedside cabinet, the same place it usually sat at home. It was his favourite picture of him and Amy, taken the day he’d graduated from Nursing School, and he knew she had a copy with her as she travelled.
He wondered what she’d think of him, going on trips into time and space with a stranger he’d met that morning.
Part of him knew it was insane that he should grab his stuff and leave but, even though he’d almost been killed twice within the last twenty-four hours, Rory couldn’t wait to see what else was out there.
Stepping out of his room into the corridor, Rory hesitated for a moment before turning to his right and hoping that was the way back to the control room.
This place was massive and from what he had understood from the Doctor’s slightly rambling explanation, it was almost infinite. He wanted to explore, especially since the Doctor had mentioned a library, a massive wardrobe, a kitchen and an art gallery.
“Everything packed away?” the Doctor asked as Rory appeared through the door.
Rory nodded, “I would have been here sooner, but I got a little turned around.”
“Did you pass anything interesting?” the Doctor didn’t look up from the console.
“Yeah,” he breathed, “An observatory and then the most incredible library. Hopefully I can find it again.”
The Doctor chuckled stroking the console, “I’m sure you will. If she showed you the library on day one, then trust me the TARDIS likes you.”
Seeing the small shy smile that touched Rory’s lips, the Doctor wondered how often Rory got to feel like he was cared for. It was clear that Rory adored his friend Amy but she had left the country, while all the pictures of his friends were centred around her so the Doctor suspected they were mostly her friends. Familywise, from what Rory had said and what he’d seen, the Doctor was sure that the only family Rory had was a grandmother.
It was a shame, because Rory was the kind of person who should be surrounded by people. The was one of the reasons the Doctor had invited him along, the other was because he liked smart people with him when travelling.
“Doctor,” Rory said as he moved to join him, “This might be a bit of a stupid question, especially considering I’ve already agreed to travel with you but…”
“But?” the Doctor asked as the young man trailed off.
Rory fidgeted for a few seconds, “Who exactly are you?”
The Doctor stared at him for a minute before shrugging, “I’m the Doctor.”
“That doesn’t help,” Rory replied, he took a breath, “From everything I’ve seen then I’m assuming you’re from the future because no one has technology like this here and now.”
A proud smile touched the Doctor’s lips, “Most people don’t really think that through.”
Rory shrugged.
“I’m a Time Lord,” the Doctor told him, “From the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous.”
“A Time Lord,” Rory repeated softly before noting, “So, that means you’re not human.”
The Doctor opened a compartment beneath the console and rummaged round till he found the stethoscope, “Here. You know how to use this, right?”
“I’m familiar,” Rory replied dryly, taking it.
“Find my heart,” the Doctor said.
Bemused Rory did as he was told, frowning as he moved the chest-piece across the Doctor’s chest, before testing it on himself and checking again.
“You have two hearts?” Rory breathed in astonishment, “You have two hearts.”
The Doctor nodded.
Rory knew that his new friend was different, but this was beyond what he’d expected. Slowly he sat and leaned against the strut trying to get his head around all the information he’d just received.
“Do you need a paper bag to breathe into?” the Doctor asked, taking a seat at his side.
Letting out a soft sigh, Rory whispered, “You’re an alien.”
“Yup,” the Doctor took a seat at his side.
“That’s…” Rory turned to him, “You look human.”
“You look Time Lord,” the Doctor threw back at him with a smile. Gently nudging his friend, the Doctor noted, “You know you’ve met aliens already. Snogged one as a matter of fact.”
“You’re never letting that go, are you?” Rory rolled his eyes.
The Doctor chuckled, “Not anytime soon.” He sat for another moment in silence before asking, “Are you okay with this or do you want to go home?”
“No,” Rory said, “I mean, yes.” He held up his hand to stop the Doctor saying anything before clarifying, “I don’t want to go home and I’m fine with it. You’re an alien with a box that’s bigger on the inside who travels in time.”
“I am.”
Rory pulled himself off the ground, “Then where to next?”
The Doctor bounced to his feet with a grin, “Let’s see.”
*********************************************
“You know this is an amazingly gorgeous sunset,” the Doctor noted as they sat on the cliff, keeping out the way of the many dinosaurs roaming around, “In a prehistoric world, so why are you looking at your phone?”
Rory’s head bobbed up guiltily, “What?”
“I thought you were filming at first,” the Doctor said, “But you’re looking at it like it’s going to ring at any moment. You know there’s no service here.”
Rory chuckled, “Sorry. I just remembered that Amy usually calls or sends a message tonight. Or well the night we met…you know what I mean.”
The Doctor chuckled, “I do. You two are close?”
Rory nodded, “We grew up together. She moved to Leadworth when she was seven,” he gave a wry smile, “My mum made me visit the new family with her as part of the welcoming committee to the village. Amy looked at me decided we were friends. I didn’t have many so just went with it,” he paused and sighed sadly, “When my mum died, I spent most of my time at her house, and she talked for me. Sometimes saying what I wanted her to actually say.”
The Doctor chuckled softly.
“We’ve been friends all our lives,” Rory continued, “When I got the job in London, Amy told me I had to take it. She wanted to leave Leadworth and we made plans to share a flat.”
Seeing the sadness in the younger man’s eyes the Doctor asked, “What happened?”
“She got a job as an assistant to some authors who are travelling the world,” Rory sighed, “It happened the day before we moved.”
The Doctor sat in silence for a moment before asking, “Were you two ever…”
“Ever?”
Rolling his eyes that the younger man was not catching on what he was asking, the Doctor clarified, “A couple.”
“Oh,” Rory blushed slightly, “No. I mean at one point I thought…but she never…and I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.”
The Doctor nodded, “Okay.”
“She’s my best friend,” Rory continued, “I’d rather be that than lose her because I tried to make us something we’re not.”
“Give me your phone,” the Doctor held out his hand, snapping his fingers when Rory hesitated, “Just, let me see it for a moment.”
Reluctantly, Rory handed over his phone watching as the Doctor pulled out the sonic and upgraded it. Handing it back he smiled, “If she calls, you’ll get it now.”
“What?” Rory stared at his phone.
“Universal Roaming,” the Doctor told him, “Always good to have.”
Rory stared at the Doctor but before he could say anything his mobile began to ring and the picture of his best friend appeared.
“Amy,” he answered.
“Rory,” the cheerful cry made him smile, “It’s so good to hear your voice.”
“You too,” Rory replied before asking, “Where are you?”
“We’re still in India,” Amy told him, “You would not believe how beautiful the country is.”
Chuckling softly, Rory looked around the prehistoric landscape he and the Doctor were standing in.
“Is it everything you thought it would be?” he asked, “Where are you exactly? Can you send me a picture?”
“Actually, I’m in the airport lounge,” Amy told him, “We’re heading to Peru tonight, hopefully. We’ve been delayed three hours already.”
“What about after Peru?” Rory asked, covering the mouthpiece as one of the dinosaurs let out a cry.
“Where are you?” Amy demanded.
Rory hesitated before replying, “The zoo.”
“What are you doing at the zoo?” Amy asked in surprise.
“I just went for a walk,” Rory improvised, “And ended up here. I’ve never been.”
She laughed.
Realising that the prehistoric animals were starting to get agitated, Rory turned to where the Doctor was motioning him to wrap it up.
“Amy, I have to go,” Rory told her, wincing as he lamely improvised, “I’m going to one of the talks. About chimps.”
“Chimps? At…what time is it?” Amy asked.
“Got to go,” Rory told her, ignoring the question, “Talk to you later. Hope your flight leaves soon.” Hanging up Rory turned to the Doctor, “What’s happening?”
“I just realised what night this is?” the Time Lord told him, “The dinosaur killing meteor is coming. Actually, it’s the Cybermen…never mind about that.”
“Which means?”
The Doctor pushed him towards the TARDIS, “We better get out of here.”
Hustled into the box, Rory spotted a bright light appearing in the sky coursing downwards. The Doctor ran to the console and pulled the lever sending them back into the timestream.
“Where to now?”

As white nationalists across the world have gained prominence through racist, Islamophobic and anti-Semitic acts, the world’s focus on terrorism seems to have shifted. Many experts on extremism now focus heavily on the far-right in its many incarnations as an important driver of terrorist threat. But this myopic approach ignores the dynamism that the Islamic State injected into the international jihadist movement, and the long-term repercussions of the networks it built. In particular, the Indian and Central Asian linkages that the group fostered are already having repercussions beyond the region.
This threat emerged most recently with the attack by the Islamic State in Khorasan Province (ISKP) on Jalalabad prison in early August. The attack showed a level of ambition that distinguished the group from many of the Islamic State’s other regional affiliates. Part of a bigger global push to do something about colleagues rotting in prisons, it was also a way of signaling how the group’s approach to freeing its prisoners differed from the Taliban’s. In ISKP’s eyes, the Taliban are in essence surrendering in their peace negotiations with the U.S. government. But the most interesting aspect of the attack was the roster of fighters involved—a multinational group that included Afghans, Indians, Tajiks, and Pakistanis.
While at first glance this seems unsurprising, the presence of Central Asians and Indians in transnational attacks is a relatively new phenomenon that reflects a shifting pattern in jihadism linked to the Islamic State. Some of the group’s most dramatic attacks—like the Easter 2019 Sri Lanka bombings, the attack on a Turkish nightclub on New Year’s Eve 2017, or the 2017 truck attacks in New York City and Stockholm—revealed jihadism’s persistent appeal to a global audience. Indeed, the rise of Central and South Asian cohorts to the front rank of attack planning is a development with potentially worrying consequences.
Jihadist ideas are not new to Central Asia or India. The civil war in 1990s Tajikistan that broke out in the wake of the country’s emancipation from the Soviet Union was an early post-Cold War battlefield which included jihadist elements. Fighters used northern Afghanistan as a base from which to fight in Tajikistan.
While most of the support for the fighting in Tajikistan emerged from communities in northern Afghanistan who went on to fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban, some disillusioned fighters in the conflict ended up fighting alongside al Qaeda. And for a while, assessments of where al Qaeda would go after its ejection from Afghanistan post-9/11 focused on the Fergana Valley, a region spanning Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan that is home to conservative communities who have clashed with their respective capitals. Groups like the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, Jund al Khilafah, the Islamic Jihad Union or various Tajikistani groups provided networks that helped Central Asians get involved in fighting in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But these networks were relatively limited in their impact.
India was the birthplace of the Deobandi movement, a sect that was a source of ideas for the Taliban, and the conflict in Kashmir has for years been a rallying cry for extremist groups
India’s history of jihadism goes back even further. The country was the birthplace of the Deobandi movement, a sect that was a source of ideas for the Taliban among others. And the conflict in Kashmir has long been held up by extremist groups as one of the world’s most long-standing unresolved jihadi conflicts. While most Kashmiris are nationalists furious at New Delhi, their conflict is one that is regularly adopted as a rallying cry by extremists who point to it as one of the many places where Muslims are being abused.
Yet notwithstanding this heritage, neither India nor Central Asia has historically produced many figures in the international jihadist movement, launching attacks far from their borders. Indians have stayed involved in networks in India, or occasionally Pakistan. Central Asians have shown up in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but rarely farther afield. That is changing.
A major attraction drawing young men and women to jihadism has always been the idea of participating in a transnational religious movement and an epic global struggle. To focus only on a parochial local level misses the larger canvas of their narratives. This appears to be a gap that the Islamic State identified and filled.
A major turning point in Indian and Central Asian involvement in the global jihadist movement was Syria. A cauldron that continues to draw people in, it is a clear and significant marker in the international jihadist story. The battlefield was one that drew in Muslims from almost 100 different countries and from every continent. This included Indians and Central Asians, though their experiences were markedly different.
A major turning point in Indian and Central Asian involvement in the global jihadist movement was Syria.
The Central Asians integrated well into the conflict, serving alongside both Islamic State and al Qaeda-affiliated groups. For example, Tajikistani former Colonel Gulmurod Khalimov rose to be a senior Islamic State commander. Large groups of Central Asians fought on the battlefield. In contrast, the few Indians who made it to the Levant had a different experience. Many received bad treatment at the hands of their Arab hosts, who tended to look down on them—reflecting the status of South Asians as poor laborers in much of the Arab world. This racism did not stop a significant number of Indians being drawn to the group, however. A more thriving community of Indian fighters made it to the conflict in Afghanistan to fight alongside ISKP there.
Since the Islamic State’s emergence, Central Asians have been involved in repeated attacks in Turkey, including the assault on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport in June 2016 and the high-profile massacre at the city’s Reina nightclub on New Year’s Eve 2017, as well as attacks using vehicles that were driven into crowds in 2017 in Stockholm in April, and New York City on Halloween that year, as well as an underground bombing in St. Petersburg.
For Indians, the international role has been more limited, with Indians for the most part appearing in attacks in Afghanistan and in limited numbers on the battlefield in Syria. The attack on the prison in Jalalabad follows the earlier decision by ISKP to use an Indian fighter to attack a Sikh gurdwara—a place of worship—in Kabul. Seen as “polytheists,” Sikhs are regarded as an acceptable target by the Islamic State like many other religious groups, though the decision to use an Indian attacker likely reflected a desire by the group to highlight their connection to India in particular.
The Islamic State officially announced the creation of an affiliate in India last year but has been hinting about involvement in Kashmir for years. The group was likely in part rejected by local Kashmiris who have long seen foreign Islamists as complicating factors in their struggles against the Indian state. However, it now seems as though the group is quite openly talking about its involvement. Al Naba, the Islamic State’s regular publication, recently listed the martyrdom notices of three Kashmiris who had reportedly fallen fighting for the group. These individuals join the growing numbers of Keralans and other Indians who are now reported to have died or fought alongside the Islamic State.
While the absolute numbers are small, this is an entirely new trend. Indians involved in external jihadist attacks have until now been the exception. The few Indians who pursued jihad tended to do it at home in a limited fashion, often with links across the border to Pakistan. Only a few ventured beyond, like Dhiren Barot, a British-raised Hindu convert who was close to 9/11 organizer Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and was ultimately jailed for a plot to detonate a bomb in the U.K. in 2005.
This is surprising, considering that India is home to the world’s third-largest Muslim community. However, today’s new generation of jihadists, is driven by a range of economic, political, and ideological factors.
Both Central Asia and India are home to large communities of young men who go and work abroad, sending home remittances that are a crucial pillar of local economies. It is often among these diaspora communities where radicalization takes place—for the Indians in the Gulf, for the Central Asians in Russia. In the COVID-blighted world, this workflow has slowed down, hurting economies, but also creating a pool of underemployed young men at home and abroad.
In the COVID-blighted world, opportunities to work abroad have dried up—hurting economies and creating a pool of underemployed young men at home and abroad.
This comes in the context of a tense political environment. In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advanced a series of policies promoting a Hindu nationalist narrative openly hostile toward Muslims. There has since been a notable uptick in jihadist propaganda toward India. In Central Asia, governments may not be stoking the same fires, but there has been an active pursuit of political opponents across the region. While there are numerous programs in place seeking to counter violent extremism, it is not always clear how effective they are, nor is it clear they are able to deal with problems of radicalization amongst diaspora communities.
And there is the continuing question of what will happen to the fighters from these countries who went to Syria and Iraq. Some may try to come home, but others may end up fostering new networks which create problems elsewhere.
The danger is that there may be an increasing number of Indian and Central Asian links to plots outside their regions. Earlier this year, German authorities disrupted a network of Tajiks linked to cells in Albania and in contact with the Islamic State in both Afghanistan and Syria. They were reportedly under orders to launch an attack in Europe. Other Central Asian cells have been reportedly disrupted across Europe, and authorities in Ukraine have made numerous arrests of fighters fleeing the collapsing battlefield in Syria.
India has seen less such activity, though there were Indian links to the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter attacks. Like many violent Islamist extremists, a Southern Indian cell involved appears to have followed the sermons of Indian prominent extremist preacher Zakir Naik, whose speeches have helped radicalize numerous different jihadists around the world.
Most of the current attention on new terrorist groups focuses on the extreme right—something that is understandable given the deeply polarized political environment in the western world. But violent Islamist threats have not gone away, and are transforming. The story of Central Asian and Indian jihadism is one that has historically received too little attention. Emerging from domestic environments that are creating more opportunities for disenfranchisement and radicalization to take place, they are exactly the sort of threats which may slip under the radar until it is too late.

Interview Izabela Faron
1. Okay, Miss Izabela, what was the specific incident that got you to this interview?
I am very much into supporting women and I believe travel is one of the fields where we women are scared to travel (either alone, or with our kids, or in general) so when I saw an opportunity to be part of this project I had to jump at it and contribute.
2. What has earned you the right to be an authority on this topic?
If we had to look at the numbers I have traveled to 24 countries so far, some of them I visited more than once and among my friends I am ’the traveler’ apart from that I read and watch everything travel related. For some travelers 24 countries are nothing, for others, it’s a dream number to tick off. However; I focus on the travel experience and adventure, not the number itself, and I do believe each of us has a different and unique travel need and my style of traveling may be useful to someone looking for similar experiences.
3. What is your brand, your topic exactly about?
I am a traveler; my style of travel could be described as an affordable luxury, I like to stay in nice boutique hotels but also I am looking for a local experience. I would not be able to spend 2 weeks just on the beach. I need to explore!
4. Why is it important?
Anyone, who wants to visit a country and take inspiration from places I had been to, will be able to find on my blog almost ready itineraries to borrow and adjust to their liking. I write my blogs in a way that they can be used as itineraries.
5. Now that I know what it is, now that I know why it’s important and relevant, how are you implementing this on your travels? I mean like, is there a process, that you follow when traveling?
I always do huge amount of research before I travel (unless I travel last minute and do not have much time – although then I use time on the plane or airport to research). Therefore my travel itineraries are well planned to maximize the number of places visited in the least time possible. My trips become perfect itineraries for adventurous travelers who want to see more, experience local culture, and have fun.
6. What if people took advantage of your tips and steps you are providing? What will happen, how will their travels change?
First of all, they will have itinerary that will be extremely busy but you will see a lot in a day, two etc. … I focus on seeing places that are important to see, but also look into the culture; food, music, etc. For instance, in Lisbon you must eat Pasties de Belem and you can combine that with seeing Belem district – so I combine two in one history, architecture and culture. Plus I love a good fun fact so every time there’s the opportunity I include that in my blog too!
7. Now we would like to get just some general information about you and your travels:
(if not answered before) – When did you start traveling?
I can’t really remember the exact time, I know I was traveling with my parents to neighboring Slovakia which was at the time an international trip! I must have been as little as 4 years old. But I remember trips in a car, different currency, and the fact that people spoke different languages. Then when I was 12 I went for a children camp by Polish seaside, it was exciting to be on a night train with other kids for 12 hours it was a great adventure, I guess my travel bug was already there. Then at the age of about 14/15, I went for holidays to north Greece where I discovered culture way different to what I knew already from my neighbor country trips. The food, music and smiles of Greek people together with charming views and beautiful sea just cemented my travel addiction. I was hooked on travel.
– Do you remember how you felt when you traveled alone for the first time?
It was scary, exciting, and that I am alone and can count only on myself. Not knowing what’s going to happen build in me resilience and self-confidence – I could only count on myself.
– How did you, or do you deal with fears?
I try to prepare as much as I can, I look up routes, connections, have screenshot of maps (if I worry about internet connection). I also try to find anyone who has been to that country to learn some tricks and useful tips.
– Is there a place where you have been and you would definitely not recommend it for women on their own and why?
I think this will have to be India. I was on this trip partially on my own and partially with Indian friends who joined me later. Even though I was in New Delhi I found that people were shocked that I was there as a woman on my own. Which causes some unpleasant moments. I also found people staring and almost ogling uncomfortable knowing that rape is also quite common in India. When I was with my Indian friends it was more safe, but still a lot of stares! Don’t get me wrong India is a beautiful country, but not for solo women travelers.
Another city I know it’s tough on women is Marrakesh – the hustlers have no mercy (apparently even if you are with a man too) I was there with my friend and that constant hiss and hustle as we were in souks was tiring.
– Do you still have this excitement, when you go for a trip?
Always!
– what are your top 5 destinations and why?
1. Peru – for Inca trails and Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca plus wonderful Peruvian food and funny lamas
2. French Polynesia – amazing diving plus luxury overwater villas and turquoise blue waters
3. Cook Islands – beauty of the atolls and marine life
4. Japan – culture, food, scenery
5. Georgia – wine and landscape plus snowboarding in the winter
– The funniest story that happened to you when traveling?
There are many… hard to pick one perhaps that one time when I was in Thailand and it was Thai New Year (Songkran) and everything was closed so when I arrived in Chiang Mai I could not buy food anywhere. After a lot of walking and searching for an open place, I ended up in someone’s garage which looked like they serve food there. I was so hungry that I did not care anymore and just ordered a dish from a lovely old man who could not speak a word of English so he was showing me photos of the food. There was a bird in the cage above my head and my partner laughed that we will soon be eating that bird (that’s how rough this place looked) but after a while, we were served our meals which were one of the best dishes we ate in Thailand. Full of flavors and made my grandma in a garage! Now it sounds funny but at the time I was so desperate to eat and so hungry that I wanted to eat anything anywhere! It turned out to be a very good experience. As they say: Don’t judge the book by its cover!
8. Call to action – what do you want people to do?

U.S. economy deteriorating faster than anticipated as 80 million Americans are forced to stay at home (Washington Post) The U.S. economy is deteriorating more quickly than was expected just days ago as extraordinary measures designed to curb the coronavirus keep 84 million Americans penned in their homes and cause the near-total shutdown of most businesses. The resulting economic meltdown, which is sending several million workers streaming into the unemployment line, is outpacing the federal government’s efforts to respond. With each day, an unprecedented stoppage gathers force as restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas and offices close to shield themselves from the disease.
Dramatic slowdown in growth predicted (Wall Street Journal) Analysts now project U.S. growth could shrink at rates far worse than the 2008 global recession, ending weeks of cautious optimism about the economy’s ability to withstand the fallout from the coronavirus. Analysts at Goldman Sachs yesterday said they expect U.S. growth to contract 24% in the second quarter, a rate nearly five times as large as the bank’s previous forecast of a 5% decline. Goldman said a decrease of that magnitude would far outpace the largest quarterly drop in gross domestic product on record--during the first quarter of the 1958 recession, when the U.S. economy contracted 10%. “The sudden stop in U.S. economic activity in response to the virus is unprecedented, and the early data points over the last week strengthen our confidence that a dramatic slowdown is indeed already underway,” the bank said in its report.
Italy virus cases soar again; NY eyes temporary hospitals (AP) The coronavirus pandemic took an increasingly bleak toll Saturday in the U.S. and Europe, producing staggering caseloads in New York and Italy and setting off a desperate scramble to set up thousands of additional hospital beds at convention centers and college campuses. Italy, at the heart of western Europe’s rampaging outbreak, announced 793 new deaths and 6,557 new cases. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said state officials were scouring the globe for desperately needed medical supplies as confirmed coronavirus cases soared above 10,000 statewide. The state is reviewing four possible locations for temporary hospitals, which would be operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.
As virus grips nation, advocates move to halt evictions (AP) On Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced a proposed $1.5 trillion package that he said includes “immediate relief to renters and homeowners” by suspending evictions and foreclosures for 60 days. But, it turns out, the vast majority of renters will not be covered by the protections. That’s because the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s plan only covers single-family homes with loans through the Federal Housing Administration--roughly 8 million homeowners, most of whom are not under foreclosure, according to HUD. That compares to the roughly 43 million households who rented in 2019, according to the U.S. Census. Roughly half rent their home from an individual investor, while the other half rent from a business or multi-unit property owner. The ones renting from a business will not receive any protections, according to HUD’s proposal. While housing advocates praised the Trump administration package as an “important first step,” they said that by excluding renters, an often economically vulnerable population, it does not go nearly far enough.
The drive-in, relic of yesterday, finds itself suited to now (AP) The drive-in theater, long a dwindling nostalgia act in a multiplex world, is experiencing a momentary return to prominence. With nearly all of the nation’s movie theaters shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic, some drive-in owners think they’re in a unique position to give moviegoers a chance to do something out of the house while keeping distance from others. This weekend, some drive-ins aren’t the only show in town. They’re the only show in the country.
Guatemala orders eight-day curfew to fight coronavirus (Reuters) Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei on Saturday ordered an eight-day curfew starting Sunday as part of measures aimed at containing the coronavirus, which has infected 17 people in the Central American nation.
Brazil’s densely packed favelas brace for coronavirus (Washington Post) In Liberia, the 2014 outbreak of Ebola was fueled by conditions in the slums of Monrovia. In India, influenza propagates more rapidly in the poorest neighborhoods, which then feed back into the city at large. And in Brazil, even the mosquito-borne disease of Zika was far more concentrated in the favelas of the north, around the city of Recife. Now in the global war against the coronavirus, analysts believe some of the most important battles will be fought in the poorest parts of the developing world, with far fewer tools and far less capacity for isolation than higher-income countries. “The strategy being pushed in the United States and China and Korea, there is no strategy for that there,” said Madhav Marathe, a division director of the University of Virginia’s Biocomplexity Institute. “Once a disease enters a slum, it’s very hard to do social distancing. Once it’s in slum, it’s very hard to protect them.”
Much of Europe is now on lockdown. But can authorities actually enforce those rules? (Washington Post) In a time when Europeans and Americans have been told to practice “social distancing” and to remain at home, people were still out and about in France and across Europe. They were shopping in proximity at bustling market stalls, running in large numbers down public promenades and, in some cases, scoffing at various government restrictions designed to keep them safe. Over the past week, a number of European governments have urged their citizens to take coronavirus seriously by imposing strict limits on movement outside the home. The question now is how governments can actually enforce those rules, with so many people seemingly willing to break them.
China, on virus PR offensive, sends masks and experts abroad (AP) As the fight against a new virus shifts to Europe and beyond, China is supplying millions of masks and other desperately needed items to struggling governments, hoping to build political ties and defuse criticism that it allowed the disease to spread early on. Serbia’s president plans to be at the airport this weekend to welcome a shipment of medical supplies from his “brother and friend,” Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Xi’s government has flown gloves and protective clothing to Liberia. It is sending 100,000 test kits to the Philippines. More than 10 flights carrying millions of masks and other supplies are bound for the Czech Republic this week. It’s part of an effort by the Communist Party to reshape the narrative, from one of early missteps to a nation that acted decisively to bring the outbreak under control. China is touting its deliveries of ventilators and masks overseas and dispatching its medical experts to share the lessons of its success.
Australia’s Bondi Beach closed after crowds defy coronavirus rules (Reuters) Australian officials closed Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach on Saturday after thousands of people flocked there in recent days, defying social distancing orders to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, amid an unusually warm autumn spell.
Israeli leader offers to step down next year in unity deal (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he is ready to step down next year as part of a proposed power-sharing agreement with his chief rival meant to steer the country through the coronavirus crisis and end a year-long political deadlock.
Thousands of Americans stranded abroad as money, patience run out (Washington Post) Daniel Rico was relaxing in his pajamas in a hotel room after a day biking through Peru’s Sacred Valley when his phone rang. The Peruvian president was about to make an announcement related to the coronavirus pandemic, his tour guide said. Rico went online and saw that Peru’s borders would close in roughly 24 hours.
Minutes later, the 33-year-old financial analyst from New Jersey and a handful of other foreigners were being driven hastily in the dark along winding Incan roads. But when Rico arrived at the Cusco airport at 2 a.m. Monday morning, he found thousands of other travelers clamoring to leave and no available tickets. Skirmishes broke out as people pushed to the front of the line, he said.
Rico and nine other Americans are now stuck in a hotel in downtown Cusco, where a 15-day quarantine is enforced by soldiers with face masks and rifles. A police officer recently shoved Rico against a wall, he said, and threatened to arrest him for going out to buy groceries.
“Things are getting bad here,” said Rico, whose wife is worriedly waiting for him at home. “Fly me to Texas or Louisiana. Drop me in Wyoming, and I’ll rent a car. But we need to get out of this country.”
From Cusco to Casablanca to Cape Town, thousands of Americans like Rico are currently stuck overseas as the rapidly expanding pandemic has caused a cascade of countries to close their borders.
As their money, medications and patience runs out, Americans have watched in mounting frustration as other countries have quickly evacuated their citizens. Feeling abandoned by their government, thousands have turned to social media for help and solace, joining online groups with names like “Americans Stuck in Peru,” “American Citizens Stranded In Guatemala” and “Stay Strong, Quarantine On.”
Their sense of panic deepened on Thursday when the State Department announced American citizens overseas should return to the United States immediately “unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.”
The announcement, coupled with the initial lack of a plan to help Americans come home, has drawn criticism from lawmakers whose inboxes are filling with emails from furious constituents trapped overseas.
“This is a source of great frustration,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) told The Washington Post. “This administration has made a mess of this by failing to take the necessary actions. We’ve been working for weeks to try to get these Americans who are stranded abroad a way to get home. We’ve watched as other countries have chartered airlines to get their citizens out.”

Pakistan and beyond
What comes to my mind when I think about Pakistan?
Well, I have a long story!
Few months earlier, anxiously held my boarding pass tight in my hands at the airport reflecting my decision if this trip to Pakistan would turn messy or uncanny; I was green as grass. Got in line for boarding, could not help but learnt the scarcity of women in the sea of men travelers to Lahore. Agitation kicked in. Sweated a little as I recalled that catchy news’ headline ‘places where women should not travel alone’.
Reading blogs prior to this trip did not help much. Vague pictures and reports about the country clouded me not knowing what to expect out of this. This weighed me down until I landed the land of hospitality and was heartened by the warmth of the locals' welcome. From beginning to end, the journey was phenomenal!
Youth programme
For the first week, I was with the youth programme. Nearly 100 people from over 30 countries gathered in Lahore to explore what this South Asian country has in store for us. Exposing to South Asian culture to a great extent is astounding I would say. I picked up and connected the populace through music, culture, social norms and religion each and everyday. This includes the world’s stereotypes on Muslim community, the notions of Islam, the perspectives of the citizens on neighboring countries; China, Afghanistan, India, as such. Not to mention gender equality and social issues that stemmed from the history.
Young women leaders
Let’s face it! You think women in South Asian countries are deeply oppressed and their means of communication are restricted. You need to see the women that I have met. They are challenging harmful practices on women and girls, speaking out of their mind, pioneering, educating, dominating, achieving and doing tons of incredible things. I could not be more impressed and proud to get to join hands to stand up for the rights of women folks.
A space for co-existence
The points that hit me like a ton of bricks was learning how easily the participants familiarized themselves with the nature of residents and eased their doubts away about the place that looks distort in the world’s eyes. All we need is to get out of our comfort space to uncover what seems to be foreign to us. Mobility is key. Isn’t it?
It was also an opportune moment as I get closer to Central Asia — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan — and its people during the programme. How come hardly ever at least in my social circle talked about Central Asia? News about so-called big nations have been the talks of the town over the places and for ages I forgot about the existence of some countries in Central Asia, Oceania, etc., on the map. It took a toll on me to realize what a small world I had lived in and the media feeds I consumed were filled with agendas.
The end of the programme
Having an opportunity to listen to the speech of the president of Pakistan on “Youth Mobilization on Peace Building” and ending our stay at the house of the governor of Pakistan was a rare experience, of course! I never knew phases of a ceremony in the South Asian country is cultured and fascinating — the kickoff, the decoration, the immersion of religion practices, and the attendants and their consumes are on point.
Politics
The timing was coincident. I was in Islamabad where the protests against the current Prime Minister Imran Khan took place. The authorities’ speeches and the news that I absorbed, the surroundings and experiences created foods for thought.
Male domination is in the air
Admit it! You feel it too. I will save this topic for another blog as it serves for further discussion and debate.
One shall not forget the hospitality of Pakistanis!
When I say warmth welcome, it REALLY WAS the authentic warmth welcome. I was treated like a family member of their own. Imagine yourself at home — comfortable, happy and at peace. Likewise, having me and my fellows over excited the locals! Randomly and often the strangers wanted to converse you. Invite you. Assist you and make you feel like home at their best. Don’t be surprised! It is just Pakistanis are being Pakistanis. The spirit of their hospitality added the people and the country even more interesting!
And their generosity…
Before this trip, I watched vlogs on YouTube just to help myself better understanding about the nation and its people. One of the videos emphasizes generosity of Pakistanis. It goes shopkeepers in Pakistan offer free foods to tourists. I smirked. Perhaps this would happen to one out of a thousand tourists! I realized this was no joke when I had breakfast at a tiny local tea shop in Islamabad. The shop owner refused to take money for a cup of tea that I had together with a plate of Roti. He said, “you are my guest now. Have a fun time in my city” and went about his business.
Want to have your mind blown? Why not give a visit to Wagah-Attari border ceremony in Lahore?
The world knows Pakistan and India share a border and their chronic affair over Kashmir. But visiting to Wagah-Attari border ceremony gave me a slight spotlight on a civic relationship between the two countries. I did not know a border ceremony of the two countries can be this festive, thrilling and crowded. Read more about my experiences at the ceremony in another blog.
Pakistan or food heaven?
Hallelujah! South Asian's foods in Pakistan is the cherry on top of this visit. Unlike previous countries that I traveled, the foods are cheaper but cleaner and tastier. The spices, the tea and the tender meat curries acted as adrenaline for a day. I love being me with a cup of Kashmir tea! It even inspired me to write a micro blog about the foods I had during my stay.
Now you can tell one of the best decisions I made is visiting Pakistan. This is yet to be the end of my story. In all honesty, I was in much safer space because of the programme I joint. More blogs on solo trip to the north, a glimpse of gender equality, memories that I shared with local friends will be up soon. Stay tuned!
